Need a new pointer? Amazon’s slashed the price on four of Logitech’s best mice for a limited time Need a new pointer? Amazon’s slashed the price on four of Logitech’s best mice for a limited time A good computer mouse is essential for getting anything done at a computer, unless you want to put up with a laptop’s trackpad or an unimpressive cheap pointer. Your search for a good mouse might come down to comfort, or it could depend on the amount of buttons, maximum DPI or even a need for a unique shape. If you’ve been on the hunt for a replacement, then good news: four of Logitech’s best options are currently discounted. Right now on Amazon, Logitech’s uniquely-shaped Lift vertical mouse, its entry-level G305 wireless gaming pointer, its incredible MX Master 3S mouse and its smaller MX Anywhere 3S mouse are currently discounted, giving you a great range of choice between home and office use. These devices all have slightly different use cases but will work across Mac and Windows platforms all the same. All four will work perfectly well in the workspace, though the G305 is perhaps better paired with a gaming rig, while the Lift is a better fit if you’re after a more comfortable and unique grip. The Lift, and the MX Master 3S have top spots on our best computer mice in Australia list, which you should peruse if you’re after a high-end pointer. The MX Anywhere 3S is also well worth considering if you’re after a smaller productivity unit (the older Anywhere 3 we still consider a top pick on our list). As someone who has used Logitech gear his whole life, the company’s mice continue to impress me. Logitech’s gaming range has won me over most of all, particularly due to its subtle aesthetic and its easy-to-use software. In the office, Logitech’s gear is designed to be comfortable and durable – with the MX Master 3S, Anywhere 3S and the Lift built for daily use. The Lift’s ergonomic shape is a standout, and folks that use it tend to swear by it. I’ve even met people who stick to the Lift as a gaming pointer! But whether you’re after a mouse for work or for play, Logitech will have an option for you. Child hospitalized after getting leg trapped in snowblower in New England town Child hospitalized after getting leg trapped in snowblower in New England town A child was taken to the hospital after their leg got stuck in a snowblower after a weekend storm moved through New England. Emergency crews responding to a report of a juvenile with their leg trapped in a snowblower in South Berwick, Maine, around 10:30 a.m. on Sunday found a child lying in front of the snow removal machine with their leg stuck in the auger, according to the South Berwick Fire Department. Crews worked for about 20 minutes to free the child, who was taken to Wentworth Douglas Hospital. Firefighters noted that the child avoided “major” injuries, but issued a safety reminder to the public. “This serves as an important reminder that children and snowblowers do not mix! Please keep children, pets, and other bystanders away from power equipment when in use,” the department wrote in a news release. There were no additional details available. Path of Exile’s Newest RNG Dependent Specialization is Bound to Make For a Frustrating Experience Path of Exile’s Newest RNG Dependent Specialization is Bound to Make For a Frustrating Experience Grinding Gear Games (GGG) brought Path of Exile into this world and made a big splash in the ARPG genre. The game has since been one of the most popular titles in the genre, and its recently released Early Access sequel is one of the most-played games on Steam right now. Despite this, GGG has continued to add content to the first game. What is GGG cooking with this change? | Image Credit: Grinding Gear Games The Legacy of Phrecia event in Path of Exile introduces a new endgame specialization system that has been a big change to how players approach the game’s endgame. And the developers might be surprised to learn that the majority of the players don’t like it at all. Why? Well, you won’t be surprised by the reason. Path of Exile got an update but no one likes it If this is a beta for PoE 2, we don’t want it. | Image Credit: Grinding Gear Games One of the biggest changes in the Legacy of Phrecia event is how it alters endgame progression. Instead of allowing players to manually specialize in different league mechanics through the Atlas Passive Skill Tree, the new system will have random item drops that determine what content players can engage with. And the early response from the community has been…mixed. The Legacy of Phrecia event in Path of Exile 1 will feature a new system for specialising in endgame content, replacing the existing Atlas Passive Skill Tree. Check out the details in today’s news post! pic.twitter.com/YCgCtxxEZg — Path of Exile (@pathofexile) February 10, 2025 The first impression from players is that it makes planning a build unnecessarily frustrating. What if there are players who like specific league mechanics like Delirium or Expedition? It’s just gonna make it harder and gating things behind RNG has never been something that players are fond of. One Redditor summed it up perfectly by saying, “This ***** better drop like candy or else the early progression will be super tedious.” Another user sarcastically noted that “we are definitely beta testing poe2 endgame,” suggesting that GGG is using the Legacy of Phrecia event as a testing ground for potential PoE 2 endgame mechanics. Comment byu/Community_Team from discussion inpathofexile Comment byu/Community_Team from discussion inpathofexile So the general consensus is that sure it’s an interesting change, but what if it makes the endgame content feel like a slot machine rather than a rewarding challenge? Path of Exile 2‘s success doesn’t need a hindrance PoE 2 is a massive hit so the devs better not pull some risky stuff. | Image Credit: Grinding Gear Games Legacy of Phrecia is only a temporary event, but the results here could extend far beyond its limited runtime. If GGG considers this experiment successful, it could affect the development of PoE 2’s endgame structure. It’s already known that Path of Exile already has one of the best endgame systems in the genre, and adding RNG-heavy mechanics to it probably isn’t the best move. The sequel’s approach to combat and build diversity has been praised, but its endgame economy and item scarcity have already been criticized. If GGG takes this new Legacy of Phrecia to the sequel then we might be looking at some very unhappy fans. Since launching into early access on December 6, Path of Exile 2 has gotten over half a million concurrent players, making it one of the most-played games on Steam. And much like the popular Marvel Rivals, we’ve also seen that PoE 2 has also had an excellent player retention rate after its first month. And all that is while the game is still in Early Access. Trump tariffs are ‘punitive,’ former U.S. ambassador to Singapore says, warns of U.S. job losses. Trump tariffs are ‘punitive,’ former U.S. ambassador to Singapore says, warns of U.S. job losses. PORTSMOUTH, UNITED KINGDOM – OCTOBER 28: The container ship Vung Tau Express sails loaded with shipping containers close to the English coast on October 28, 2024 in Portsmouth, England. Matt Cardy | Getty Images News | Getty Images Tariffs proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump are not simply symbolic, but are punitive and will “cost jobs” in the U.S., according to Frank Lavin, former U.S. ambassador to Singapore. Speaking to CNBC’s “Street Signs Asia,” Lavin said that “we’re in for a bit of bad news in the near term,” adding that the tariffs will also hurt the auto industry in the U.S. “It will obligate other countries to respond. So we’re going to see deterioration, and I think worst of all, from Mr. Trump’s point of view, is we’re going to see a little bit of inflationary pressure as well,” Lavin said. Trump on Monday signed executive orders implementing 25% tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum into the U.S. When asked if Trump could be using tariffs and the threat of tariffs as a bargaining chip, Lavin explained that it could be seen as such, if tariffs were targeted at Canada or Mexico to elicit a response on issues like border security. “But when you’re talking about a global tariff on steel and aluminum and a tariff on China, you’re not going to see a quick response and a quick resolution of these matters,” he said. Furthermore, with Trump vowing a “reciprocal” stance on tariffs, Lavin said that the world will see a deterioration in trade, and this will make it difficult for other countries to respond. “So he’s gone beyond simply signaling or simply establishing tariffs as a bargaining chip.” “If they charge us, we charge them. If they’re at 25 [percent] we’re at 25, if they’re at 10 we’re at 10, And if they’re much higher than 25, than that’s where we are at too,” Trump said Monday. While the U.S. economy is currently “not in a bad shape,” Lavin said that tariffs will add inefficiencies to the economy and put negative pressure on it. It will also increase inflationary pressure, which could lead to the U.S. Federal Reserve holding off on rate cuts. “Trump was angry at the U.S. Fed last time when there was no easing. Well, there’s not going to be any easing next time either, if he keeps these tariffs in place,” he said. Volunteers needed for Disabled Surfing Association Great Southern’s Let’s Go Surfing event at Middleton Beach Volunteers needed for Disabled Surfing Association Great Southern’s Let’s Go Surfing event at Middleton Beach Albany’s second all-abilities surfing event for the year will return to Middleton Beach this weekend, but a record number of surfers has organisers calling for more volunteers to make it a success. Nearly 40 surfers signed up for Saturday’s Let’s Go Surfing morning — an increase from the roughly 30 surfers who attended the January event. Organised by Disabled Surfing Association Great Southern, the initiative aims to provide people living with disability a safe environment to give surfing a go. President Kerry Oakley said she hoped to get more volunteers on board. Camera IconVolunteers help surfers catch a wave and a smile at the January event. Credit: Rusti Gardener “More volunteers means more time in the water for our surfers,” she said. “Even if you can only be there for an hour or two, that’s going to be a great help.” Ms Oakley said there are plenty of ways for volunteers to help out whether they know how to surf or not. “You don’t need to be a surfer, you just need to be comfortable standing in the water,” she said. “Even if you’re not comfortable being in the water at all, volunteers can help with set up or pack down or can be on the beach entertaining the surfers while they wait for their turn on the boards. “There’s a way for everyone to help out, no matter what your level of experience or comfort is when you get there.” Ms Oakley said the event was a great opportunity to get involved in a feel-good community event. “Seeing the smiles on the surfers’ faces when they come in on a wave is absolutely priceless,” she said. “It’s something that we take for granted and I think it’s a great perspective shift for able-bodied people to see the absolute joy from someone who doesn’t have the opportunity to get in the water whenever they want to.” Set up starts from 7.30am, with surfers in the water from 9.30am, and pack down is at 12.30pm after a barbecue lunch. Russia is sending ‘hundreds’ of its war wounded for treatment in North Korea, ambassador says Russia is sending ‘hundreds’ of its war wounded for treatment in North Korea, ambassador says Wounded Russian troops are being sent to North Korean medical facilities, per a Russian official. Moscow’s ambassador to Pyongyang, Alexander Matsegora, said the deal involved “hundreds” of troops. War analysts said it could give North Korea an opportunity to learn even more from the Ukraine war. Russia is sending soldiers who were wounded in the Ukraine war to recuperate in North Korea, its ambassador to Pyongyang told state media. The comment from Alexander Matsegora, Moscow’s diplomat to North Korea for over a decade, was part of a wide-ranging interview about cross-border relations that state-run outlet Rossiyskaya Gazeta published on Monday. “A clear example of such a brotherly attitude is the rehabilitation of hundreds of wounded soldiers of the SVO in Korean sanatoriums and hospitals,” he said. “SVO” is an abbreviation used by the Kremlin to describe the war in Ukraine as a “special military operation.” Matsegora said North Korea had refused compensation from Moscow. “Everything related to staying in the DPRK, all this was absolutely free,” he said. Matsegora said there was a “warm attitude toward Russians” in North Korea and mentioned several joint student and internship programs in the works between the two countries. His remarks are yet another sign of how the strengthening alliance between Russian leader Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is playing out on the war front and beyond. Kim is estimated to have sent about 11,000 to 12,000 of his elite troops to fight against Ukraine, prompting concerns in the West that Pyongyang’s involvement would help its soldiers gain valuable combat experience. Analysts from the Institute for the Study of War, a Washington-based think tank, wrote that Russia sending wounded troops to North Korea could boost what Pyongyang can learn. “The arrival of combat-experienced Russian soldiers, particularly if they include officers or non-commissioned officers, to North Korea may allow the Russian military to work with North Korean forces and disseminate lessons from the war in Ukraine while ostensibly recuperating,” they wrote. Matsegora also told state media that professors from Pyongyang would be stationed in major Russian cities such as Moscow, Kazan, Novosibirsk, and Vladivostok for a “long ******* of time.” There, they would teach the Korean language and teach joint classes, he said. ISW analysts said this indicates that Russia hopes to set the stage for further North Korean assistance in the war, or at least for help with its sanctioned wartime economy. “The Kremlin may be setting informational conditions to justify an influx of North Korean citizens arriving in Russia to join either the Russian workforce or the Russian military,” the ISW analysts wrote. Matsegora’s comments also come as Russia’s Federal Security Service reported that the number of North Koreans entering Russia for work in 2024 had surged to over 13,000 crossings. That’s a 12-fold increase compared to 2023. Still, the exponential jump could also be due to a recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2019, over 21,000 North Koreans were recorded traveling to Russia for work. Seoul’s National Intelligence Service said on Sunday that many of the North Korean workers sent to Russia last year were dispatched to construction sites. Per the South Korean agency, the move has helped to fill a worker shortage in Russia as the Kremlin’s push to recruit more soldiers is draining the country’s young workforce. The NIS further accused Pyongyang and Moscow of using student visas to “dispatch workers without the international community’s knowledge.” The international community imposes a wide range of sanctions on North Korea, while the West has been actively trying to sanction key Russian sectors such as energy, finance, and defense due to its invasion of Ukraine. ‘Severely emaciated’ French bulldog rescued in North Charleston; microchip may have originated overseas ‘Severely emaciated’ French bulldog rescued in North Charleston; microchip may have originated overseas NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Animal advocates are hoping to identify the owner of a severely emaciated dog that was rescued in North Charleston and taken to an animal shelter. Leaders with the Charleston Animal Society said the French Bulldog, named Valentine, was found near the Alston Arms Apartments in the Midland Park neighborhood earlier this month. They described his condition as “dire” and said he was roughly 10 pounds underweight with his ribs, hips, and spine visible. Valentine was also covered in sores and scrapes, had missing patches of fur, and appeared to have endured multiple untreated ear infections. “Despite the trauma he has suffered, Valentine remains incredibly friendly and affectionate,” said Charleston Animal Society Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Aldwin Roman, CAWA. “We named him Valentine, because even in the face of hardship, he still has a big heart.” While a microchip was found in Valentine, Charleston Animal Society said it appears to have originated overseas and is not listed in the most common national and international databases, creating a unique challenge in identifying its owner. “Valentine still has a long road to recovery, but thanks to the dedicated efforts of Charleston Animal Society’s American Animal Hospital Association accredited veterinary team, he is receiving daily care to help him regain a healthy weight and heal from his injuries,” officials stated. Charleston Animal Society encourages anyone with information about the dog or his owners to come forward. You can reach out to the Animal Resource Center by emailing *****@*****.tld. John Butler and Fremantle residents throw support behind Frack Free Kimberley movement with concert John Butler and Fremantle residents throw support behind Frack Free Kimberley movement with concert Fremantle residents have put their weight behind the Frack Free Kimberley movement, with more than 100 gathering for a protest concert to call for an end to fracking in the region. The Freo for a Frack Free Kimberley concert headlined by international performer John Butler, up-and-coming Fremantle musician Noah Dillon and Kimberley residents Wil Thomas and Phoebe Corke drew a full house and passionate crowd at Fremantle’s Port Beach Brewery on February 6. Butler said it was heartening to see so many Fremantle people standing up for the country. “We need to keep the pressure up and demand to know why fracking is deemed too dangerous for the South West and metro areas, where it’s banned by the Government, but not for the treasured and beloved Kimberley,” he said. “Freo people are very clearly and loudly calling for the Kimberley to be protected from fracking.” Broome-based singer-songwriter Thomas said fracking was “poisonous”. “There’s been many destructive proposals in the Kimberley over the years but we’ve never stopped fighting for it,” he said. Northern California’s famed ‘glory hole’ spillway is used for first time in years Northern California’s famed ‘glory hole’ spillway is used for first time in years A unique spectacle key to Napa County’s water management could be drawing onlookers for weeks to come thanks to the string of atmospheric rivers continuing to hit Northern California. Lake Berryessa’s famed “glory hole,” located about 80 miles north of San Francisco, experienced its first spillover in years after water levels on the man-made reservoir exceeded 440 feet, automatically triggering the use of the mid-lake pipe to keep the lake from flooding. Technically called the Morning Glory Hole spillway, the drainage pipe has been used only 25 times in its nearly 70-year history, according to the Solano County Water Agency, which utilizes water from the reservoir. “It started spilling at Feb. 4 at 6:15 p.m., and we’re going to see another atmospheric river hit us on Thursday, so it’s quite likely the lake will continue to spill for a few more weeks,” said Chris Lee, the general manager for the Solano County Water Agency. The fascinating water management design, known as a passive spillway, was last used in 2019 and 2017. Before that it hadn’t been active since 2005, Lee said, a history that exemplifies California’s increasingly dramatic swings through wet and dry seasons amplified by human-caused climate change. Read more: Newsom issues order to ‘maximize’ water capture during storms. Critics say it sounds just like Trump When the phenomenon occurs, the lake looks like it has a giant hole in it, where a ring of water is being pulled inward. The top of the pipe is 72 feet across and releases the water 200 feet down into Putah Creek. “It’s definitely worth seeing,” Lee said. “I’ve been lucky enough to see it a few times. … It’s just not that common.” Lee said he’s aware of only two other similarly passive spillways in California, one in Trinity Lake in Trinity County and one at Whiskeytown Lake in Shasta County, which also spilled over last week. The New York Times first wrote about Lake Berryessa’s mesmerizing drain, interviewing Peter Kilkus, who was there hours after the spillway opened. “People were taking pictures and videos and just standing in awe,” Kilkus, the editor of the Lake Berryessa News, told the paper. Lake Berryessa is owned and operated by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, but it provides much of Sonoma County’s water for drinking and irrigation through the Sonoma County Water Agency, Lee said. The reservoir was created after federal officials built the Monticello Dam on Putah Creek in the 1950s and has been providing water and hydroelectricity to the Greater Bay Area ever since, according to Visit Napa Valley. Because the dam was constructed in a canyon too narrow to support a typical spillway, officials erected the unique engineering feature to still allow for drainage — the Morning Glory Hole. Read more: Major atmospheric river storm is barreling toward California: ‘Prepare for the worst’ Though the section of the lake with the glory hole is marked off by buoys, it continues to draw in curious onlookers like gravity. Officials urge spectators and lake recreaters to be careful and not get close to the glory hole. A woman died in 1997 when she was sucked down into the pipe. “We’re hoping that people use their best judgment,” Lee said. Teacher fatally stabs eight-year-old in Daejeon Teacher fatally stabs eight-year-old in Daejeon News1 Locals laid flowers at the school’s gate to mourn the eight-year-old student A teacher has fatally stabbed an eight-year-old girl at an elementary school in South Korea, in an incident that has shocked the nation. The female teacher, who is in her 40s, confessed to stabbing the student in the central city of Daejeon, police said. The girl was found with stab wounds on the second floor of a school building at 18:00 local time (09:00GMT) Monday and was pronounced dead at the hospital. The teacher was beside her with stab wounds that police said might be self-inflicted. South Korea’s acting president Choi Sang-mok on Tuesday ordered an investigation into the case and urged authorities to “implement necessary measures to ensure such incidents never happen again”. Some locals laid flowers and a stuffed doll at the gate of the school, which was closed on Tuesday. The teacher had requested a six-month leave of absence citing depression on 9 December but she returned to school just 20 days later after a doctor assessed her as being fit to work, the Daejeon education office said. She did not have a relationship with the student, authorities said. Days before the stabbing, the teacher had displayed violent behaviour, including putting another teacher in a headlock, they said. Two officials from the education office visited the school on Monday, the morning of the stabbing, to investigate that altercation. The student was reported missing on Monday evening after the bus driver informed the school that she had not arrived to be picked up that day. Police also said they would continue interrogating the teacher after she recovers from her surgery. After the attack on the co-worker, the education office recommended that the teacher put on leave and be separated physically from the other teacher. She was made to sit beside the vice principal’s desk so that she could be kept under close watch. She had also not been teaching any classes since her leave in December, and did not have any contact with the eight-year-old student, the official said. South Korea is a generally safe country with strict gun crontrol laws. But in recent years, it has grappled with several high-profile crimes, including stabbings. “It pains me to see such incident because a school should be our safest space,” said acting president Choi. “I offer my deep condolences to the victim’s family who suffered great shock and agony.” Source link #Teacher #fatally #stabs #eightyearold #Daejeon Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Australia’s listed gold miners bask in bullion’s new record high Australia’s listed gold miners bask in bullion’s new record high Gold miners are basking in the glow of yet another record price high for the precious metal — even as it comes off levels that pushed it close to the $US3000-an-ounce mark. The spot gold price rose to a new all-time high of $US2911.72/oz in the US overnight Monday shortly after US President Donald Trump said he would announce a 25 per cent tariff on steel and aluminium imports. The uncertainty spooked global financial markets and stoked demand for a safe haven. Bullion climbed further after Mr Trump officially imposed the tariffs, which are set to start on March 4. *********** Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said after an early morning phone call with Mr Trump on Tuesday that he was hopeful of a carveout for local suppliers. Bullion rose to $US2942/oz late Tuesday morning, but the rally was short-lived and most of the gains had been given up by midday. The precious metal has leapt about 11 per cent so far this year, setting successive records, as trade disruptions and geopolitical tensions reinforce its role as a store of value. Traders are also trying to get a read on the potential implications for the US economy and monetary policy should the White House’s policies reignite inflation and subdue growth, according to Bloomberg. But the retreat didn’t stop Australia’s biggest listed gold miners attracting the attention of buyers. Northern Star Resources had jumped 4.4 per cent to $18.61 by midday, taking its gains since the start of the year to just over 20 per cent. Evolution Mining was also well up, rising 6 per cent to $6.28, and up 30 per cent so far this year. Bellevue Gold rose 3.8 per cent to $1.22, up 7.2 per cent since the start of January, while Ramelius Resources was a laggard with just a one per cent gain for the day to $2.66 — but up 25.8 per cent for the year. Newmont added 3.6 per cent to $74.27, up 23.3 per cent for the year so far, and De Grey Mining soared 4.9 per cent to $2.16, up nearly 21 per cent over the past six weeks. Citigroup at the weekend said it expects gold prices to hit $US3000/oz this year. “The gold bull market looks set to continue under Trump 2.0,” analysts including Kenny Hu wrote in a report, citing risks such as slower growth and high interest rates. The bank also said that an appreciating US dollar will increase the incentive for central banks from emerging economies to boost gold holdings in order to support their own currencies, while investors will turn both to physical gold and exchange-traded funds. Trade war fears have also led dealers in London to shift metal to the US, fearing the possibility that bullion won’t be excluded from potential tariffs. “A Russia/Ukraine peace deal, and confirmation of whether gold would be exempt from broad tariffs (or not), could provide a buying opportunity over the next 2-3 months,” the Citi analysts said. The bank raised its average price target for the year by $US100 to $US2900 an ounce, while leaving its six to 12-month price target of $US3000 unchanged. with Bloomberg Source link #Australias #listed #gold #miners #bask #bullions #record #high Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

Burned lot in Pacific Palisades sells for nearly $1 million less than a month after listing Burned lot in Pacific Palisades sells for nearly $1 million less than a month after listing The Brief A vacant lot on which a home was destroyed due to the Palisades Fire has sold for nearly $1 million less than a month after hitting the market. Aerial images showed the home was one of several destroyed in the January wildfire. The owner of the home told Realtor she would not rebuild. PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – The scorched lot where a home once stood before it was destroyed in the Palisades Fire has been sold for nearly $1 million less than a month after the deadly fire, according to Realtor.com. The 9,932-square-foot property located on Avenida de la Herradura was listed for $999,000 on Jan. 16, nine days after the deadly Palisades Fire broke out southeast of Palisades Drive. The owner of the home had purchased it in 2005 for $1.54 million, listing agent Richard Schulman of Schulman Team/KW Advisors told Realtor. “For her, it was an easy decision,” Schulman told the outlet. “She was clear she was not going to rebuild. She’s staying nearby.” Realtor identified the buyer as a local investor, with Schulman noting that there was “significant investor interest” in the property. “We had probably 70 or 80 inquiries, mostly from out-of-area investors,” he told Realtor. “Despite what happened, this will be an amazing area again.” Aerial images show the property was among several homes in the neighborhood destroyed by the fire. On Google Maps, a search for the address shows a blurred image in place of the home. The Palisades Fire broke out on the afternoon of Tuesday, Jan. 7 as parts of Southern California were hit by powerful Santa Ana winds – the strongest to hit the area in over a decade, officials said. The piercing winds not only intensified the spread of the fire, it also prevented helicopters and planes from dumping water or fire retardant onto the burning scene as it was too dangerous to fly during the first day of the massive fire. The fire extended well over 23,000 acres in seven days, destroying homes and businesses across the Pacific Palisades and Malibu. The fire also forced evacuations across parts of LA County, including Bel-Air, Brentwood and Santa Monica. The fire destroyed 6,833 structures and damaged nearly 1,000 others. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but officials have focused their attention on a popular hiking destination – Skull Rock – located north of Sunset Boulevard – “as a possible starting point for the Palisades Fire” – because another fire had burned there six days prior. Reporting mistakes helps us improve the experience.Generate Key Takeaways WASHINGTON (AP) — Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth signed an order Monday restoring the name of a storied special operations forces base back to Fort Bragg. The North Carolina base was renamed Fort Liberty in 2023 as part of a national effort under the Biden administration to remove names that honored Confederate leaders. The base’s original namesake, Gen. Braxton Bragg, was a Confederate general from Warrenton, North Carolina, who was known for owning slaves and losing key Civil War battles, contributing to the Confederacy’s downfall. But the Pentagon spokesman said Hegseth was renaming the base to honor Pfc. Roland L. Bragg, who he said was a World War II hero who earned the Silver Star and Purple Heart for his exceptional courage during the Battle of the Bulge. The choice of the World War II private first class got around a law prohibiting the military from naming a base after a Confederate leader. In a video he posted on X announcing that he was renaming the base, Hegseth said: “That’s right. Bragg is back!” In reality, the base had still been widely known as Bragg, the new name having not really taken hold. On Hegseth’s first official day as defense secretary he made a point of calling it Fort Bragg in his first exchange with reporters.
