Five Nights At Freddy’s: Secret Of The Mimic Scares Up The Franchise’s Return
Five Nights At Freddy’s: Secret Of The Mimic Scares Up The Franchise’s Return
After a nearly two-year hiatus, the Five Nights At Freddy’s franchise is making a return this year with its next mainline title, Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic. During Sony’s latest State of Play, the first trailer for Secret of the Mimic laid out the mission at hand and why Fazbear Entertainment is so eager to get its hands on the tech. But it may be a one-way trip for any employee who accepts the task at hand.
The Mimic made its first appearance in the spin-off book, Five Nights at Freddy’s: Tales from the Pizzaplex #1: Lally’s Game, before making an in-game debut as one of the antagonists in Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach’s Ruin DLC. The Mimic is a prototype that can adapt and disguise itself as any of the costumed animatronic characters.

Will Colombia ban Pablo Escobar memorabilia?
Will Colombia ban Pablo Escobar memorabilia?
Catherine Ellis
Business reporter
Reporting fromMedellín, ColombiaGonzalo Rojas
A young Gonzalo Rojas and his father, who was killed by Pablo Escobar
A proposed law in Colombia’s Congress seeks to ban the ***** of merchandise that celebrates former drug lord Pablo Escobar. But opinions are divided on it.
On Monday, 27 November 1989, Gonzalo Rojas was at school in the Colombian capital of Bogota when a teacher pulled him out of class to deliver some devastating news.
His father, also called Gonzalo, had died in a plane ****** that morning.
“I remember leaving and seeing my mum and grandma waiting for me, crying,” says Mr Rojas, who was just 10-years-old at the time. “It was a very, very sad day.”
Minutes after take off, an explosion on board Avianca flight 203 killed the 107 passengers and crew, as well as three people on the ground who were hit by falling debris.
The blast wasn’t an accident. It was a deliberate bomb attack by Pablo Escobar and his Medellín cartel.
While an era defined by drug wars, bombings, kidnappings and a sky high ******* rate has largely been relegated to Colombia’s past, Escobar’s legacy has not.
The notorious criminal, who was killed by security forces in 1993, has achieved a near cult-like status around the world, immortalised in books, music and TV productions like the Netflix series Narcos.
In Colombia itself, his name and face are adorned on mugs, keychains, and t-shirts in tourist shops catering mainly to curious visitors.
But a proposed law in Colombia’s Congress is seeking to change this.
The bill wants to ban Escobar merchandise – and that of other convicted criminals – to help put an end to the glorification of a drug boss who was central in the global ******** trade and widely held responsible for at least 4,000 killings.
“Difficult issues that are part of the history and memory of our country cannot simply be remembered by a T-shirt, or a sticker sold on a street corner,” says Juan Sebastián Gómez, Congress member and co-author of the bill.
The proposed law would prohibit the selling, as well as the use and carrying of clothing and items promoting criminals, including Escobar. It would mean fines for those who violated the rules, and a temporary suspension of businesses.
Catherine Ellis
Pablo Escobar memorabilia is widely available in Colombia
Many vendors selling the goods claim a law prohibiting this merchandise would harm their livelihoods.
“This is terrible. We have a right to work, and these Pablo T-shirts especially always sell well,” says Joana Montoya, who owns a stall stocked full of Escobar merchandise in Comuna 13, a popular tourist zone of Medellín.
Medellín, Escobar’s hometown, was known as “the most dangerous city in the world” in the late 80s and early 90s due to violence associated with drug wars and Colombia’s armed conflict.
Today it’s been revitalised into a hub of innovation and tourism, with vendors eager to cash in on the influx of visitors wanting to take home souvenirs – some related to Escobar.
“This Escobar merchandise benefits many families here – it sustains us. It helps us pay our rent, buy food, look after our kids,” says Ms Montaya, who supports herself and her young daughter.
Ms Montoya says at least 15% of her sales come from Escobar products, but some sellers tell the BBC that for them it’s as much as 60%.
Catherine Ellis
Stallholder Joana Montoya says that Pablo Escobar memorabilia provides her with a vital income
If the bill is approved there would be a defined time ******* for sellers to familiarise themselves with the new rules and phase out their Escobar stock.
“We’d need a transition phase so that people could stop selling these products and replace them with other ones,” explains Congressman Gómez. He says that Colombia has more interesting things to show than drug lords, and that the association with Escobar has stigmatised the country abroad.
Some of the T-shirts, sold for around £5, bear a catchphrase linked to Escobar – “silver or lead?”. This symbolises the choice the cartel boss gave to those who posed a threat to his criminal operations: accept a bribe or be killed.
Shop assistant María Suarez believes that the profit gained from sales of Escobar merchandise isn’t ethical.
“We need this ban. He did awful things and these souvenirs are things that shouldn’t exist,” she says, explaining that she feels uncomfortable that her boss stocks Escobar items.
Escobar and his Medellín cartel at one point were believed to have controlled 80% of the ******** entering the US. In 1987, he was named as one of the richest people in the world by Forbes magazine.
He spent some of his fortune developing deprived neighbourhoods, but many people consider this as a tactic to buy loyalty from some segments of the population.
Years on from his father’s death, Mr Rojas remembers him as a calm and responsible man, who loved his family. For him, the bill is a defining moment.
“It’s a milestone in the road about how we reflect on what is happening in terms of the commercialisation of images of Pablo Escobar in order to correct it,” says Mr Rojas.
Yet he does have criticisms about the proposals. He believes the bill doesn’t focus enough on education.
Juan Sebastián Gómez
Congressman Juan Sebastián Gómez says the focus on Escobar harm’s Colombia’s reputation
Mr Rojas recalls a day many years ago when he met a man wearing a green T-shirt with a silhouette of Escobar, and the words “Pablo, President”.
“It caused me such confusion that I wasn’t able to say anything to him about it,” he says.
“There needs to be more of an emphasis on how we deliver different messages to new generations, so that there isn’t a positive image of what a cartel boss is.”
Mr Rojas has actively been involved in efforts to reshape narratives around Escobar and the drug trade. Along with some other victims, he launched narcostore.com in 2019, an online shop that appears to sell Escobar-themed items.
But none of the products actually exist and when customers select an item they are shown a video testimony from a victim. Mr Rojas says the site has attracted 180 million visits from around the world.
In Colombia’s Congress, the bill faces four stages it needs to pass before it can become law. Gómez says he’s hoping it sparks reflection both inside and outside of Congress.
“In Germany you don’t sell Hitler T-shirts or swastikas. In Italy you don’t sell Mussolini stickers, and you don’t go to Chile and get a copy of Pinochet’s ID card.
“I think the most important thing the bill can do is to generate a conversation as a country – a conversation that hasn’t happened yet.”
Medellín’s mayor – who was also a presidential candidate in the 2022 elections – has publicly backed the bill, calling the merchandise “an insult to the city, the country and the victims”.
In El Poblado, an upmarket area of Medellín popular with tourists, three Americans browse a stall brimming with souvenirs. One buys a cap with Escobar’s name and face printed on the front. He says he wants a memento of “history”.
But for supporters of the bill, this isn’t about removing Escobar from history, it’s about erasing a mythical construct of him, fostering new ways to honour the victims he killed – and acknowledging the lingering pain of victims left behind.

Record £1.6m NHS baby deaths fine ‘follows empty promises’
Record £1.6m NHS baby deaths fine ‘follows empty promises’
Asha Patel
BBC News, Nottingham
BBC
Sarah and Gary Andrews watched as Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) NHS Trust was prosecuted for the second time due to maternity failings
The parents of a baby girl who died 23 minutes after being born under the care of an NHS trust have slammed the organisation for “empty promises” after watching it be prosecuted for the second time.
Wynter Andrews died in September 2019 under the care of Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) NHS Trust, leading to the organisation being fined £800,000 in 2023.
On Wednesday, the trust was handed a record £1.6m fine – the largest ever for an NHS trust for maternity care – following another prosecution brought by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) over the deaths of babies Adele O’Sullivan, Kahlani Rawson and Quinn Parker in 2021.
After the sentencing, Wynter’s parents Sarah and Gary said the case confirmed what they had said “all along – Wynter’s death was not an isolated incident”.
The trust remains at the centre of the largest maternity inquiry in the history of the NHS. The review began in 2022 and is looking into more than 2,000 cases dating back to 2012.
Mr and Mrs Andrews watched Wednesday’s proceedings at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court from the public gallery, as the families of Adele, Kahlani and Quinn heard the sentence being passed by District Judge Grace Leong.
In her remarks, the judge said: “There were similarities between the current cases and the failures concerning Baby Wynter namely, a lack of escalation of care, the inadequate communication systems and the failure to provide clear and complete information sharing.”
‘Grave mistakes recurred’
These failings, the judge said, were among a “catalogue” of others that led to the babies and their mothers being exposed to significant risk of avoidable harm, and in Quinn’s case, resulted in him suffering avoidable harm.
After Wynter’s death in 2019, a CQC inspection of NUH in October 2020 led to the trust being placed in “special measures”.
It was inspected again in April 2021 and a number of improvements had been identified, the court heard.
That inspection took place “either around the or after the death of baby Adele“, and the report was published in May.
Baby Kahlani died in June, followed by the death of baby Quinn in July.
Separate inquests into their deaths highlighted a “series of errors” and “missed opportunities” in their care.
The judge added there was “no explanation on why, notwithstanding the number of guidelines to aid and assist the medical staff, the grave mistakes in the care and treatment of the mothers and their babies recurred”.
Ryan Parker/Emmie Studencki
Quinn Parker was delivered by emergency Caesarean section at Nottingham City Hospital in July 2021
During the inquest into baby Wynter’s death in 2020, the coroner said she had received an anonymous later from midwives at NUH’s maternity unit, addressed to trust bosses, warning of a “potential disaster” as a result of staffing issues.
That letter was dated 10 months before Wynter’s death.
Mr Andrews said the trust had “failed to listen” to those whistleblowers, adding they had been promised the trust would do “everything in its power to ensure such a tragedy would never happen again”.
He added: “We watched the proceedings of [Wednesday’s] prosecutions from the public gallery as concerned parents – who were promised several years ago that our daughter’s death would bring about change.
“It is apparent 1739405547 that those entrusted to bring about change failed to do so.”
‘Time to act’
While the maternity review – being led by senior midwife Donna Ockenden – is ongoing and now expected to reveal its findings in June 2026, the couple urged the Department of Health and Social Care to commission an independent, external investigation involving healthcare regulators.
They said: “The time for empty promises is over. The time to listen and learn is now.”
Lawyers speaking on behalf of the families of Adele, Kahlani and Quinn also called for greater accountability and action.
Natalie Cosgrove, on behalf of Quinn’s parents Emmie Studencki and Ryan Parker, said: “The medical expert confirmed that had the trust taken just one of many opportunities to provide suitable care, then Quinn would be sitting down for his afternoon snack at nursery right now.
“Instead, he is buried in the ground.”
Sadie Simpson, speaking on behalf of the parents of Adele and Kahlani, added: “Whilst it is accepted that some changes have been made, for years, families and staff have raised alarm bells about the quality of care at NUH, and tragically, the consequences have been devastating.
“This case reinforces the urgent need for meaningful and lasting improvements, and the time to act is now.”
NUH chief executive Anthony May apologised to trust staff as well as bereaved families
Following the hearing, NUH chief executive Anthony May said: “The mothers and families of these babies have had to endure things that no family should after the care provided by our hospitals failed them, and for that I am truly sorry.
“Today’s judgement is against the trust, and I also apologise to staff who we let down when it came to providing the right environment and processes to enable them to do their jobs safely.”
The trust added it had made a number of changes through its Maternity Improvement Programme, including increasing staff numbers and launching a new foetal medicine unit and neonatal unit.
“There is more to do, but we know we are on the right path to improvement,” Mr May added.

Metal Gear Solid Delta trailer re-confirms leaked release date
Metal Gear Solid Delta trailer re-confirms leaked release date
A trailer for Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater that accidentally leaked last week has now been officially shown, confirming the game’s release date.
The trailer, which appeared on the remake’s PlayStation Store page last week, announced that the game will released on August 28, and will be PS5 Pro enhanced.
The trailer has now aired as part of Sony‘s latest State of Play presentation, officially confirming that date.
As well as showing new gameplay footage, the trailer also confirms that the Snake vs Monkey mode from the original game will make a return in the remake.
Last year, VGC went hands-on with the first 90 minutes of Metal Gear Solid Delta, and came away impressed with what was shown.
“If Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is a temperature check for the return of the franchise, then so far it’s doing an incredible job,” we wrote. “It feels great to play, it looks excellent, and it retains all the campy nonsense that makes Metal Gear so beloved.
“It’s like Konami sat down and asked ‘what doesn’t hold up about MGS 3,’ and laser-targeted those things while leaving the things that made it so unique alone. We couldn’t be more confident about Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater as a package, and we’re desperate to play more.”

Share price booms after Castle hits high-grade Ghana gold paydirt
Share price booms after Castle hits high-grade Ghana gold paydirt
Castle Minerals shares soared as much as 60 per cent this morning to as high as 4 cents on big volume after hitting paydirt and jagging high-grade gold intercepts up to 8.29 grams per tonne (g/t) in a recent drilling campaign at its Kpali gold prospect in Ghana’s Upper West Region.
The company’s latest eight-hole, 1106-metre reverse circulation (RC) drill program intersected shallow mineralisation in every hole, reinforcing Kpali’s potential as a significant gold discovery.
The standout results include a striking 12m intercept at 8.29g/t gold in a hanging wall lode from just 25m in depth, with a 6m section running at 11.60g/t gold and a peak intercept of 1m reaching 20.43g/t gold. Another intercept in the same hole jagged 4m at 4.16g/t gold from 95m in a lower footwall lode.
Other noteworthy results were a 9m intercept grading 4.81g/t gold from 107m, which included a 2m chunk at 8.75g/t gold and a 5m hit of 3.66g/t gold from 78m.
The latest hits have turned up some impressive widths and grades at shallow depths with strong continuity, which the company says may significantly improve the chances of getting a mine off the ground.
The Kpali gold prospect is developing into a robust discovery and is a strong indicator that we may be dealing with a new West African gold mining camp in Ghana’s emerging northern region.
The results come on the heels of successful drilling at the nearby Kandia 4000 zone, nearly 100 kilometres northeast of Kpali, where Castle confirmed gold continuity with strong intercepts, including 7m grading 3.36g/t gold from 149m and 5m running at 3.49g/t gold from 82m.
Stone said the region is proving to be a high-potential gold belt. It is similar to the prolific Birimian greenstone belts that host some of West Africa’s largest gold mines, including Cardinal Resources’ 5.1-million-ounce Namdini gold deposit.
Another project with multi-million-ounce appeal in the region is Azumah Resources’ 2.8m-ounce ****** Volta gold project whose high-grade Julie deposit is directly along strike from Kandia.
Castle says its Kpali project is shaping up as a prime candidate for large-scale resource development. The company is targeting an initial one-million-ounce gold resource across multiple prospects, including the Bundi, Kpali East and Wa South prospects.
Following its latest drilling successes, Castle is gearing up for an aggressive follow-up exploration program to conduct step-out drilling at Kpali and the Bundi prospect – where the company’s drill bit jagged 2m at 9.09g/t gold for 68m and 6m running at 3.32g/t gold from 37m. It wants to further understand the resource potential and look for additional high-grade zones.
Ghana is richly endowed with multi-million-ounce gold discoveries, including Gold Fields Ltd’s 15m-ounce Tarkwa mine. With its established infrastructure and a stable and mining-friendly jurisdiction, the underexplored country is a hot favourite with exploration companies.
With the gold price currently at historically strong levels, the timing for exploration and development could not be better. And if similar results keep pouring in, Castle’s latest discovery could mark the beginning of a new gold district in West Africa.
The early signs suggest the company is well on its way.

Recording captured the chilling sound of the Titan submersible’s final moment
Recording captured the chilling sound of the Titan submersible’s final moment
The federal government released a chilling audio recording of the doomed Titan submersible as it imploded in the North Atlantic Ocean, killing five people, nearly two years ago, officials said.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recording was made by a passive acoustic recorder about 900 miles from where the OceanGate vessel met its end.
NOAA’s Ocean Noise Reference Station Network is made up of 13 passive acoustic monitoring sites within the Northeastern continental United States.
Steady static was suddenly interrupted by a ***** that the Coast Guard said it believes is the Titan buckling under the water’s pressure, instantly killing all aboard.
The audio clip “records the suspected acoustic signature of the Titan submersible implosion” on June 18, 2023, the Coast Guard said.
OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, 61, who was piloting the Titan; deep sea explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet, 77, who was experienced in visiting the Titanic wreck site; British tycoon Hamish Harding, 58; and Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood, 48, and his son, Suleman, 19, were killed on the doomed journey to view the Titanic wreck site in the North Atlantic Ocean off Canada.
The voyage was nearly two hours old when the vessel lost contact with its support ship, setting off a frantic search.
Public fascination about the submersible was sparked by reports of “******** noises” that had been detected, sparking talk about how long passengers could sustain themselves in a cramped tube running out of oxygen.

Putin ‘peace talks’ and a ‘game of no halves’
Putin ‘peace talks’ and a ‘game of no halves’
The Mirror is the first of many papers to lead with US President Donald Trump claiming that his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, is ready for peace talks to end the Ukraine war. It comes after a phone call between the two leaders, where they agreed to start negotiations to end the war in Ukraine “immediately”.
The Daily Mail leads with the call between the Russian and American leaders, but asks whether a potential peace deal could betray Ukraine.
The Trump-Putin talks take up the Guardian’s front page. It also has a story on how a report has found that Sir David Amess’s killer was exited from the government’s Prevent anti-terror programme too quickly.
The Times leads with the Ukraine peace talks. It also has a story on how a public inquiry into the Nottingham attacks will take place soon, with PM Keir Starmer promising “justice, accountability and transparency”.
The FT leads with Trump announcing the Ukraine negotiations. It also has a story on US inflation unexpectedly rising to 3% in January.
The Telegraph leads with the Trump-Putin phone call, alongside a huge photo of the US president with close ally Elon Musk – and the billionaire’s son – inside the White House. It also has a headline “Join a terror group, stay in the ***” about how a ********* woman, who the paper says had tried and failed eight times to get asylum to the ***, finally succeeded after joining a terrorist group.
The Daily Star pokes fun at Trump, saying that Musk’s 4-year-old son “brought some much needed dignity and gravitas” to the president’s “mad as a box of frogs government”.
The i has a story on how members of Sir Keir Starmer’s cabinet could be at risk as the PM plans his first reshuffle. Those at risk include Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson, Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy and Attorney General Lord Hermer, the paper reports.
The Daily Express quotes Tory leader Kemi Badenoch urging PM Keir Starmer to put *** national interests ahead of “crazy” European human rights laws.
“A game of no halves” is the headline on the front page of the Metro. The paper reports that there will be a full alcohol ban at the 2034 World Cup in Saudi Arabia.
The Sun leads with Katie Price revealing her son Harvey is to start Ozempic-style weight-loss jabs to save his life.

INTERVIEW: Tides of Annihilation Devs Talk Culture, Costumes, and Challenges
INTERVIEW: Tides of Annihilation Devs Talk Culture, Costumes, and Challenges
Eclipse Glow Studio is an all-new firm located in Chengdu, China. The team has been painstakingly piecing together Tides of Annihilation for some time, and last year, I sat down with the studio at Gamescom to learn about this developing project. Back then, both the studio and the game went by different names, and a lot has changed in the last few months.
Recently, Eclipse Glow unveiled Tides of Annihilation at the PlayStation State of Play showcase, revealing a two-minute trailer that left gamers worldwide gobsmacked and eager to learn more.
Well, here’s that opportunity. I put a few questions to the team at Eclipse Glow Studio, just for you.
Prepare for Annihilation
My first concern regarding Tides of Annihilation was centred around the game’s difficulty level. I’m not a fan of games that are challenging just for the fun of it, and the toughest game I’ve played in recent years is Stellar Blade, which is fairly accessible.
With that in mind, I wanted to find out if Tides of Annihilation, which looks like a crossover between Stellar Blade and Elden Ring, will be all that difficult when it’s eventually released.
We are thinking about the difficulty level but haven’t decided. But we will also provide some strategic possibilities for players who don’t like action challenges without making the process very long and painful.
During Gamescom 2024, I sat with Eclipse Glow to learn about their intentions to make this game appeal to a ‘Western’ market. To that end, the folks from the ******** studio wanted to create a powerful, visually impressive character and plant them in a recognisable world, rooted firmly in one of the most familiar cities on Earth.
We have restored the famous landmarks of London and incorporated elements of otherworldly fantasy, as well as the base of the Arthurian legend itself; making it both familiar and new to those who are interested in British and knight culture.
Because of the unique background of our development team, we wanted to provide a completely new and interesting perspective to the setting and story, while being absolutely respectful to the culture and subject matter.
I’ve already compared Tides of Annihilation to Stellar Blade, and I’m sure many gamers will also make that connection. Given that Stellar Blade’s protagonist was designed to be eye candy, I was curious to know how deep customisation and character outfitting would run in Tides of Annihilation.
The game has a wealth of battle-related customization content, including knight configuration, weapon changes, equipment and accessory configuration, etc. We also offer customization of clothing, hair color and makeup.
We will also provide customization for outwardly visible content such as clothing, hair color and makeup, which will be added to the overall gameplay content.
I for one am very excited about Tides of Annihilation, even if it might be too tough for me to master. It’s set to be released on Xbox Series, PlayStation 5, and PC, but no release window has been confirmed.

Victory teen Murphy earns shock Matildas call-up
Victory teen Murphy earns shock Matildas call-up
Melbourne Victory teenager Alana Murphy has earned a surprise maiden Matildas call-up for this month’s SheBelieves Cup, replacing injured midfielder Clare Wheeler.
Murphy, 19, is a youth international who has established herself as one of the form midfielders in the A-League Women competition.
The hard-nosed, skilful defensive midfielder has one goal and one assist in 15 games this season.
Murphy joins Brisbane Roar’s Laini Freier as the only uncapped players in the squad, which will assemble after this weekend’s games.
Wheeler’s thigh injury is another blow to the Everton midfielder’s hopes of establishing herself at national team level.
The 27-year-old also missed last year’s friendlies against Brazil and Taiwan through injury and has consistently been a back-up to midfield stars Katrina Gorry and Kyra Cooney-Cross.
“The midfielder was medically withdrawn from the 23-player squad by her club, Everton FC Women after sustaining a thigh injury earlier this week,” Football Australia said in a statement.
“Wheeler will continue her rehabilitation with the club as part of her return to play plan.”
Australia will play Japan in their tournament opener on February 21 (AEDT) before facing the USA and Colombia.

Watch the new gameplay trailer for Onimusha: Way of the Sword
Capcom has shown off a new gameplay trailer for Onimusha: Way of the Sword.
The action game, which is a reboot of the franchise, will be released in 2026. A specific date has yet to be announced.
The new trailer focuses on the game’s protagonist, Miyamoto Musashi, who is described by Capcom as “a fierce young samurai, constantly moving from one bloody and mucky fight to the next”.
Musashi is ‘played’ by late Japanese movie star Toshiro Mifune, who died in 1997.
Mifune was best known for collaborating with legendary film director Akira Kurosawa 16 times, including in such films as Rashomon and Seven Samurai.
The game’s main enemy are the Genma. “Usually found dwelling in the lowest depths of hell, the Malice enveloping Kyoto has brought these fiends into the world of the living,” Capcom’s description reads. “Their ceaseless atrocities have plunged the capital into a state of dread and panic.”
During a live stream last week, Onimusha: Way of the Sword producer Akihito Kadowaki said the game was focusing on three core aspects. “Compelling characters, including a new protagonist and enemies that are interesting more than just visually.
“The setting of Kyoto, a location brimming with historic spots with mysterious and unsettling backstories, And lastly, the ultimate sword fighting action.”
“The protagonist, due to a twist of fate, finds himself wielding an Oni gauntlet,” director Satoru Nihei added. “Now, in Onimusha, he sets about mowing down the monstrosities roaming the world of the living and feeding their souls to the gauntlet. Through gritty, bloody-soaked brawls, he searches for his reason to fight.

US judge allows Trump to proceed with government employee buyout
US judge allows Trump to proceed with government employee buyout
BOSTON (Reuters) – A federal judge on Wednesday allowed Donald Trump’s administration to carry out its federal worker buyout program as the Republican president moves to overhaul and downsize the U.S. government, handing a setback to unions seeking to stop the plan.
U.S. District Judge George O’Toole in Boston rejected a request by unions representing more than 800,000 federal employees for an order blocking implementation of the program. The unions have called the administration’s “deferred resignation” offer to federal civilian employees unlawful.

Asia-Pacific markets set for higher open after Wall Street declines on inflation fears

Asia-Pacific markets were set to open higher Thursday, breaking ranks with Wall Street that fell overnight as U.S. stronger inflation data diminished prospects of policy easing by the U.S. Federal Reserve.
Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 rose 0.1%.
Japan’s Nikkei 225 futures pointed to a higher open for the market. The futures contract in Chicago is currently at 39,245 and its counterpart in Osaka last traded at 39,180 compared to the index’s previous close of 38,963.7.
Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index futures were at 22,072, also higher than the HSI’s last close of 21,857.92.
Overnight in the U.S., the S&P 500 tumbled and bond yields spiked after consumer prices rose more than expected in January.
The broad market index slipped 0.27% to end at 6,051.97, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbled 225.09 points, or 0.5%, to 44,368.56. The Nasdaq Composite eked out a 0.03% gain to close at 19,649.95.
The latest inflation data suggests that the Fed may be less likely to resume its rate-cutting campaign soon, as well as raises concerns that the next move could even be a hike.
During his testimony before the House Committee on Financial Services on Wednesday, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell noted that the latest CPI data serves as a reminder of the Fed’s progress in moving inflation closer to its 2% target, but acknowledged that it is “not quite there yet.”
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is traveling to the U.S. for talks with President Donald Trump and his administration and is expected to mitigate the threat of reciprocal tariffs as well as artificial intelligence policies.
— CNBC’s Pia Singh and Brian Evans contributed to this report.

Returnal developer’s next game is Saros, and it’s out in 2026
Returnal developer’s next game is Saros, and it’s out in 2026
In PlayStation’s February 2025 State of Play, Housemarque has announced Saros, a new single-player game that builds on Returnal‘s third-person action, and it’s set to launch in 2026 for PlayStation 5.
Saros features Rahul Kohli portraying its main character, Arjun Devraj. He’s best known for his roles in The Haunting of Bly Manor and Midnight Mass. As an Soltari Enforcer, Arjun trapped on a hostile planet Carcosa that’s haunted by some sort of ominous eclipse, searching for answers on a lost off-world colony.

In the new trailer, Arjun faces off against a demonic looking entity with six arms, and then the shot pans to his pupils. Within the reflections of his eyes, you can see flying orbs getting ready to attack him, indicating that Saros will incorporate bullet hell elements similar to Returnal. While Housemarque didn’t provide any other details, creative director Gregory Louden said that Saros will be enhanced for PS5 Pro. He also confirmed that gameplay will be shown later this year.
There are some main differences between Returnal and Saros. In Saros, Arjun will have permanent resources and progression, which makes every one of his deaths more valuable. Players will be able to choose and permanently upgrade their loadouts from an evolving pool of weapons and suit upgrades. The theme of the game is “come back stronger,” which Arjun triumphantly declares in the reveal trailer itself.
Housemarque is known for its bullet hell-style shooting games, particularly the Stardust series, Nex Machina, and Returnal. Louden explained that Saros will be the final evolution of the “Housemarque gameplay-first experience.”

Google will start using artificial intelligence to determine whether users are age appropriate for its products, the company said Wednesday.
Google announced the new technique for determining users’ ages as part of a blog focused on “New digital protections for kids, teens and parents.” The automation will be used across Google products, including YouTube, a spokesperson confirmed. Google has billions of users across its properties and users designated as under the age of 18 have restrictions to some Google services.
“This year we’ll begin testing a machine learning-based age estimation model in the U.S.,” wrote Jenn Fitzpatrick, SVP of Google’s “Core” Technology team, in the blog post. The Core unit is responsible for building the technical foundation behind the company’s flagship products and for protecting users’ online safety.
“This model helps us estimate whether a user is over or under 18 so that we can apply protections to help provide more age-appropriate experiences,” Fitzpatrick wrote.
The latest AI move also comes as lawmakers pressure online platforms to create more provisions around child safety. The company said it will bring its AI-based age estimations to more countries over time. Meta rolled out similar features that uses AI to determine that someone may be lying about their age in September.
Google, and others within the tech industry, have been ramping their reliance on AI for various tasks and products. Using AI for age-related content represents the latest AI front for Google.
The new initiative by Google’s “Core” team comes despite the company reorganization that unit last year, laying off hundreds of employees and moving some roles to India and Mexico, CNBC reported at the time.
