  8. Hot inflation stokes fears of rate pause fears Hot inflation stokes fears of rate pause fears Eggs for ***** at 74.9 cents each at a supermarket on Feb.10, 2025, in Monterey Park, California. Frederic J. Brown | Afp | Getty Images What do arthouse movies and U.S. interest rates in 2025 have in common? There’s a chance both will have no cuts. The 3% figure for 12-month headline inflation hasn’t been seen since June. While it’s just 10 basis points higher than the 2.9% reading in December, the psychological shock of seeing that number — the way a $2.99 coffee might seem a lot cheaper than a $3 one — is already causing traders to lower their bets of an interest rate cut in the first half of the year, or of one happening at all in 2025. That is, if the U.S. Federal Reserve is allowed to operate as the independent body that it has traditionally been. Seemingly changing his mind again, U.S. President Donald Trump has reiterated that interest rates should go down — while his tariffs, ranging from country-specific to industry-targeted to reciprocal ones, are implemented. Wall Street seemed unprepared on how to take the news. Lower rates are mostly good news for investors, but tariffs are generally bad for prices. Stocks fell, but not as dramatically as some of the art movies do. What you need to know today Annual U.S. inflation hits 3%The U.S. consumer price index rose 0.5% month on month in January and 3% for the year, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Wednesday. Both figures were higher than the Dow Jones estimate of 0.3% and 2.9%, respectively. Core CPI, which excludes food and energy prices, was also higher than expected. The hot inflation report dimmed hopes of more interest rate cuts this year by the U.S. Federal Reserve. Trump reiterates rates should be cutU.S. President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he thinks rates should come down, posting on Truth Social, “Interest Rates should be lowered, something which would go hand in hand with upcoming Tariffs!!! Lets Rock and Roll, America!!!” The Trump administration’s position on interest rates has been inconsistent. Trump said in January that he would demand interest rates drop “immediately” but subsequently said the Fed keeping rates unchanged in January was “the right thing to do.” Trump to announce reciprocal tariffs on ThursdayReciprocal tariffs by the U.S. could be announced by Thursday, press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters at the White House on Wednesday. Trump said Sunday that he plans reciprocal tariffs on “every country” that imposes import duties on the U.S. “Very simply it’s if they charge us, we charge them,” he said on Air Force One, NBC News reported. On Monday, Trump signed an order to impose 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. U.S. markets dip and Treasury yields jumpA hot CPI report singed U.S. stocks on Wednesday. The S&P 500 fell 0.27%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.5% and the Nasdaq Composite was slightly above the flatline. Higher-than-expected prices also sent the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield above 4.6%. Asia-Pacific markets climbed Thursday. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 hit a record intraday high but pared gains to close flat. 9. As talks to end the war begin, Ukraine could pay high price for peace As talks to end the war begin, Ukraine could pay high price for peace U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin at a joint press conference after their summit on July 16, 2018, in Helsinki, Finland. Chris McGrath | Getty Images News | Getty Images Almost three years after Russia invaded Ukraine, talks to end the war that has led to the loss of tens of thousands of lives are set to begin, U.S. President Donald Trump announced Wednesday. The White House leader said he spoke to both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the phone, and that both leaders said they wanted peace. Trump said he instructed U.S. officials to begin peace talks immediately. Elaborating on his conversation with Putin, Trump said the heads of state had a “lengthy and highly productive phone call” in which they had discussed the war, and noted that the Russian president agreed that it was “common sense” to end the conflict that has caused widescale destruction in Ukraine and led to the deaths of thousands of soldiers and civilians. “We each talked about the strengths of our respective Nations, and the great benefit that we will someday have in working together. But first, as we both agreed, we want to stop the millions of deaths taking place in the War with Russia/Ukraine,” Trump said in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social. Trump said he and Putin agreed to work closely and visit each other’s countries, adding that both men would instruct their respective teams to start negotiations immediately. Trump said he then spoke to Zelenskyy who, he said, also wanted to “make peace.” “I am hopeful that the results of that meeting will be positive. It is time to stop this ridiculous War, where there has been massive, and totally unnecessary, DEATH and DESTRUCTION,” Trump stated in a separate post. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth (second from left) and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte (center) attend the NATO Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting at the NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, on Feb. 12, 2025. Anadolu | Anadolu | Getty Images Before Trump’s announcement regarding negotiations, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth had poured cold water on Ukraine’s hopes of joining military alliance NATO and of regaining lost territories after Russia’s 2014 invasion of Crimea. “We want, like you, a sovereign and prosperous Ukraine. But we must start by recognising that returning to Ukraine’s pre-2014 borders is an unrealistic objective,” Hegseth told officials from around 50 countries allied to Ukraine in Brussels on Wednesday, according to NBC News reporting. “Chasing this illusionary goal will only prolong the war and cause more suffering,” he said. Trump later concurred that it was “probably true” that there was no likelihood of Ukraine joining NATO. He agreed that the odds were slim that Ukraine would return to its pre-2014 borders, but said “some of that land will come back” as part of a peace deal. Before its full-scale invasion that began on Feb. 24, 2022, Russian forces had invaded the Crimean peninsula in 2014, and then backed and armed pro-Russian separatists in the Donbas in eastern Ukraine. After almost three years of wholesale war, Russian forces now occupy around 20% of heavily-fortified territory in the south and east of the country, according to analysts. Russia ready to ‘work together’ Global market sentiment is certainly likely to be boosted by the distinct (albeit perhaps still distant) prospect that a war that has caused global fractures and instability — disrupting global supply chains, increasing energy prices and subduing consumer and investor confidence — could finally end. Heavily sanctioned Russia, whose economy has been put on a war footing for the last couple of years, will also be relishing the prospect that it could see sanctions lifted as part of negotiations. Trump’s intervention also gives Putin a diplomatic “off-ramp” and route out of the war without losing face. Russia will have to back-pedal on its adversarial and hostile stance toward the U.S., and Putin’s apparently good relations with Trump could also make that far easier. The mood in Russia appears to be upbeat, with Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov stating Wednesday that Putin had “backed one of the main statements made by the U.S. leader that the time has come for our countries to work together,” Peskov said, according to state news agency Tass. Kirill Dmitriev, the chief executive of Russia’s sovereign wealth fund, the Russian Direct Investment Fund, commented Wednesday that “a single call can change the course of history — today, the leaders of the U.S. and Russia have possibly opened a door to a future shaped by cooperation, not confrontation.” Dmitry Medvedev, former Russian president and high-profile hawk, commented that the conversation between Trump and Putin was important for the world, coming at a time when it was “teetering on the brink of the Apocalypse” due to hostile relations between Washington and Moscow in recent years. Ukraine, meanwhile, is waking up to the hard reality that its biggest ally and benefactor, the U.S., could ask the country to pay a high price for peace, forcing it to relinquish its dream of joining NATO — and the security guarantees membership brings — and to potentially concede occupied territory to Russia. The price of peace? Officials in Kyiv are nevertheless putting on a brave face for forthcoming talks. Yuriy Sak, an advisor to Ukraine’s Ministry of Strategic Industries, told CNBC on Thursday that Zelenskyy had stressed to his U.S. counterpart, with whom he has had a checkered relationship, that he had “stressed that there are certain non-negotiable issues for Ukraine, such as our independence, our territorial integrity and our territorial sovereignty.” “Now we understand very well that certain issues will be difficult, if not impossible, to achieve, for example, Ukraine’s membership in the NATO alliance,” Sak told CNBC Thursday. “At the same time, it is very important that both Pete Hegseth as well as Donald Trump reiterated that it is important that Ukraine, as part of this negotiating process, receives substantial and robust security guarantees.” Sak said Ukraine would “have to be smart in these negotiations” to achieve its goals in the negotiations, which he said would be “unprecedentedly complex.” “We have signs that our position is understood by our U.S. partners. We hope that the European partners will be involved considerably in this process. The US has important leverages that they can use to force Russia to agree to the terms of just peace. And for now, that’s our objective,” Sak said. Ukraine’s European allies appear concerned that they could be left on the sidelines as peace talks between Russia, the U.S. and Ukraine begin, issuing a statement Wednesday evening saying they would continue to support Kyiv “until a just, comprehensive and lasting peace is reached. A peace that guarantees the interest of Ukraine and our own.” “We are looking forward to discussing the way ahead together with our American allies. Our shared objectives should be to put Ukraine in a position of strength. Ukraine and Europe must be part of any negotiations. Ukraine should be provided with strong security guarantees,” the statement from the Weimar+ group, made up of France, Germany, Poland, Italy, Spain, the U.K. and European Commission, noted. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk echoed that sentiment, posting on X, “All we need is peace. A JUST PEACE. Ukraine, Europe and the United States should work on this together. Police catching motorists doing 90mph on 30mph roads Police catching motorists doing 90mph on 30mph roads Almost half of *** police forces have caught motorists driving more than 90mph (144km/h) on 30mph roads in the 20 months to the end of August, the RAC says. A total of 48% forces found drivers going more than three times the 30mph limit, while 90% had clocked people driving at 60mph. The highest recorded speed on 30mph roads was 122mph in South Yorkshire. For 20mph roads, the top speed was logged by North Wales Police at 88mph. The highest recorded speed on any road was 167mph on a 70mph stretch of the M1 in Leicestershire. The largest difference between the speed recorded and the speed limit was 161mph on a 50mph in Somerset. The data came from Freedom of Information requests the RAC made to 45 police forces relating to the ******* from January 2023 to the end of August 2024. Forty forces provided data. RAC road safety spokesperson Rod Dennis said: “Although this data is a snapshot, it shines a light on the incredibly dangerous actions of a few, that are putting law-abiding road users at serious risk. Thankfully, the police were on hand to catch these drivers.” Richard Parker, mayor of the West Midlands, said: “Too many people are being killed or seriously injured and we need to act now”. Speed is the biggest factor reported in fatal road collisions, according to government data. In 2023 speed contributed to 888 fatalities, and more than 39,000 collisions of all severities. More than 24,000 vehicles were caught on camera being driven at more than 100mph (161km/h) between 2019 and 2023, police data shows. 13. Google defends scrapping AI pledges and DEI goals in all-staff meeting | US news Google defends scrapping AI pledges and DEI goals in all-staff meeting | US news Google’s executives gave details on Wednesday on how the tech giant will sunset its diversity initiatives and defended dropping its pledge against building artificial intelligence for weaponry and surveillance in an all-staff meeting. Melonie Parker, Google’s former head of diversity, said the company was doing away with its diversity and inclusion employee training programs and “updating” broader training programs that have “DEI content”. It was the first time company executives have addressed the whole staff since Google announced it would no longer follow hiring goals for diversity and took down its pledge not to build militarized AI. The chief legal officer, Kent Walker, said a lot had changed since Google first introduced its AI principles in 2018, which explicitly stated Google would not build AI for harmful purposes. He said it would be “good for society” for the company to be part of evolving geopolitical discussions in response to a question about why the company removed prohibitions against building AI for weapons and surveillance. Parker said that, as a federal contractor, the company has been reviewing all of its programs and initiatives in response to Donald Trump’s executive orders that direct federal agencies and contractors to dismantle DEI work. Parker’s role has also been changed from chief diversity officer to the vice-president of Googler Engagement. “What’s not changing is we’ve always hired the best person for the job,” she said, according to a recording of the meeting the Guardian reviewed. Google’s chief executive, Sundar Pichai, said the company had always “deeply cared” about hiring a workforce that represents the diversity of its global users but that the firm had to comply with the rules and regulations of where it operates. “Our values are enduring, but we have to comply with legal directions depending on how they evolve,” Pichai said. Pichai, who was speaking from Paris while attending an international AI summit, and other executives were responding to questions employees posted in an internal forum. Some of these questions were part of a coordinated effort among worker activist groups such as No Tech for Apartheid to force company executives to answer for the tech giant’s drastic move away from its previous core values. Employees had submitted 93 questions about the company’s decision to remove its pledge not to build AI weapons and more than 100 about Google’s announcement that it was rolling back DEI pledges, according to screenshots the Guardian reviewed. The company recently shifted to using AI to summarize similar questions employees had ahead of regularly scheduled staff meetings, which are known as TGIF. Last week, Google joined Meta and Amazon in shifting away from an emphasis on a culture of inclusivity in favor of policies molded in the image of the Trump administration. In addition to removing mentions of its commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) from filings with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, the company said it would no longer set hiring targets for people from underrepresented backgrounds. The company also removed language from its publicly posted AI principles that stated it wouldn’t build AI for harmful purposes including weaponry and surveillance. “We are increasingly being asked to have a seat at the table in some important conversations, and I think it’s good for society that Google has a role in those conversations in areas where we do specialize – cybersecurity, or some of the work around biology, and many more,” Walker, the chief legal officer, said. “While it may be that some of the strict prohibitions that were in [the first version] of the AI principles don’t jive well with those more nuanced conversations we’re having now, it remains the case that our north star through all of this is that the benefits substantially outweigh the risks.” Google has long attempted to give the impression that it was toeing the line between its stated corporate and cultural values and chasing government and defense contracts. After employee protests in 2018, the company withdrew from the US Defense Department’s Project Maven – which used AI to analyze drone footage – and released its AI principles and values, which promised not to build AI for weapons or surveillance. In the years since, however, the company has started working with the Pentagon again after securing a $9bn Joint Warfighting Cloud Capability contract along with Microsoft, Amazon and Oracle. Google has also had active contracts to provide AI to the Israel Defense Forces. The tech giant had worked over time to distance the contract, called Project Nimbus, from the military arm of the Israeli government, but the Washington Post revealed documents that showed the company not only worked with the IDF but rushed to fulfill new requests for more AI access after the 7 October attacks. It is unclear how the IDF is using Google’s AI capabilities but, as the Guardian reported, the Israeli military has used AI for a number of military purposes including to help find and identify bombing targets. In a statement a Google spokesperson, Anna Kowalczyk, said the company’s work with the Israeli government was not “directed at highly sensitive, classified, or military workloads relevant to weapons or intelligence services”. skip past newsletter promotion A weekly dive in to how technology is shaping our lives Privacy Notice: Newsletters may contain info about charities, online ads, and content funded by outside parties. The “SVP of People Operations Fiona Cicconi communicated internally that the move to dismantle DEI programs was made to insulate government contracts from ‘risk’,” the group wrote in a worker call to action published on Tuesday. “It is important to note that the bulk of government spending on technology services is spent through the military.” For each category of question from employees, Google’s internal AI summarizes all the queries into a single query. The AI distilled the questions about the development of AI weapons to: “We recently removed a section from our AI principles page that pledged to avoid using the technology in potentially harmful applications, such as weapons and surveillance. Why did we remove this section?” While the company does not make all of the questions that were posted visible, the list gives a snapshot of some of them. Questions that employees asked included how the updated AI principles would ensure the company’s tools “are not misused for harmful purposes” and asked executives to “please talk frankly and without corp speak and legalese”. The third-most-popular question employees asked was why the AI summaries were so bad. “The AI summaries of questions on Ask are terrible. Can we go back to answering the questions people actually asked?” it read. X to pay Donald Trump $10m to settle lawsuit over Capitol attack – report | US Capitol attack X to pay Donald Trump $10m to settle lawsuit over Capitol attack – report | US Capitol attack Elon Musk’s social media platform X will pay Donald Trump $10m to settle a lawsuit the president filed after he was banned from the platform following the January 6 attack on the US Capitol, according to a report. The lawsuit was filed against X under the leadership of its previous CEO, Jack Dorsey. After Musk purchased X, reinstated Trump’s account, began developing a relationship with the president and spent $250m on his re-election campaign, Trump’s legal team considered abandoning the lawsuit, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the case. But, ultimately, Trump’s lawyers went ahead with the case. The settlement will mark the second time a social media platform has paid Trump millions after the 2021 siege of the Capitol. In January, Meta agreed to pay the president $25m – including $22m to Trump’s presidential library – to settle a similar lawsuit after Facebook suspended Trump’s account. Trump’s attorneys are expected to pursue a similar settlement with Google over its decision to ban the president from YouTube after the attack. In recent months, Trump has formed a close relationship with Musk, resulting in his appointment to lead the newly formed “department of government efficiency”. On Tuesday, Musk took questions from reporters alongside the president in an Oval Office ceremony regarding the closure of government offices. Trump’s lawsuit against X stems from the president’s use of the platform, then still called Twitter, to spread falsehoods after he lost the 2020 election. Trump used his account to encourage his followers to attend a “Stop the Steal” rally on 6 January 2021 before the storming of the Capitol. Cheng Xin | Getty Images News | Getty Images Alibaba Group Chairman Joe Tsai confirmed on Thursday that the company was partnering with Apple to roll out AI for iPhones sold in China, speaking at the World Governments Summit in Dubai. “[Apple] talked to a number of companies in China, and in the end, they chose to do business with us. They want to use our AI to power their phones,” Tsai said. The partnership was first reported by tech-focused news organization The Information on Tuesday, triggering a jump in Alibaba and Apple shares. Hong Kong-listed shares of Alibaba surged on Thursday to hit their highest level since 2022 during the intraday session before paring the gains, last up 2.5%. The announcement could provide clarity on Apple’s AI strategy in China, helping it better tackle growing competition as the iPhone’s market share erodes in the world’s largest smartphone market. While domestic rivals such as Huawei have touted AI features on their devices since last year, Apple has been quiet about its ‘Apple Intelligence’ push in the market, despite plans to launch in the U.S. this fall. Apple Intelligence is the Cupertino-based company’s plan to bring AI across its devices, featuring an improved version of its voice assistant Siri, as well as features that automatically organize emails and transcribe and summarize audio. Analysts have told CNBC that Apple’s AI rollout in China has likely stalled due to China’s stringent rules on the technology. Beijing has enacted various regulations on AI in recent years with some of the rules requiring large language models to get approval for commercial use. Generative AI providers are also responsible for taking down “********” content. However, Tsai said Thursday that the Alibaba partnership could offer Apple a local partner to help navigate regulatory environment and localize its AI. — CNBC’s Anniek Bao contributed to this report. 19. Donald Trump on PGA Tour’s side in LIV Golf dispute, says Rory McIlroy Donald Trump on PGA Tour’s side in LIV Golf dispute, says Rory McIlroy Rory McIlroy believes Donald Trump is “on the PGA Tour’s side” in its ongoing dispute with rival tour LIV Golf having discussed the topic while playing golf with the US President prior to his inauguration. Speaking before the Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines, the Northern Irishman said Trump had told him that he did not like LIV’s 54-hole format. Trump met with PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan and player director Adam Scott last week as the organisation seeks help in talks with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), which funds LIV. The PGA Tour has been in protracted negotiations with PIF in an attempt to heal the split in world golf. “The President, he can do a lot of things,” McIlroy said. “He has direct access to Yasir [Al-Rumayyan, governor of the PIF]’s boss [Mohammed bin Salman]. Not many people have that. “Not many people can say, ‘I want you to get this deal done and by the way, I’m speaking to your boss, I’m going to tell him the same thing’. “He [Trump] can be influential. I saw it when I was playing with Sheikh Hamdan of Abu Dhabi [on] the day [Trump] got elected in November. I don’t think people appreciate how much respect he has [in the Middle East]. “Whenever he says something, they listen and I think that’s a big thing.” McIlroy said he had played golf with Trump “a few weeks ago” and had “a good discussion”. “I learnt that he’s not a fan of the LIV format,” McIlroy said, adding that he put it to the President that he had hosted LIV events. “He was like, ‘yeah, but it doesn’t mean that I like it’, so I think he’s on the Tour’s side,” McIlroy added. 21. Venus fast tracks boots-on-ground fieldwork at WA gold project Venus fast tracks boots-on-ground fieldwork at WA gold project Venus Metals has fast tracked boots-on-ground field work at its 90per cent- owned Bellchambers gold project, near Sandstone in the West *********** goldifelds, in preparation for a comprehensive drilling program the company plans to start in the next two months. The Bellchambers gold depositcomprises 722,000 tonnes at 1.31 grams per tonne (g/t) gold and is just 70 kilometres by road from the Youanmi gold project being progressed by Rox Resources. Venus late last year signalled its intention to push forward with the development of Bellchambers by lodging a 415-hectare mining lease over the deposit. Gold production at the site dates back to 1908, with historical figures showing 3688 ounces extracted at an impressive average grade of 21g/t gold. Numerous drill holes in the area returned encouraging results including a 11-metre hit at 4.69g/t gold from 12m, with 1m jagging a tidy 38.92g/t gold. The company’s latest field work will involve mapping, rock chip sampling and logistical work to get the drill rods spinning as soon as possible. Venus intends to utilise both reverse circulation and diamond drill rigs over the coming months in a concerted effort to define additional potential gold mineralisation between Bellchambers and its nearby Range View deposit. Gold in the area is hosted within a steeply dipping sequence of sheared sulphide-rich sediments and mafic rocks, interlayered with thin chert and a complex folded and sheared banded iron formation. It shows distinct similarities with banded iron formation-hosted gold mineralisation from within the central section of the Sandstone Greenstone Belt. The field work will deliver Venus with another layer of data to help it select drill hole locations for testing potential targets. The Bellchambers deposit is open at depth and along strike, and the upcoming drilling program will enhance and potentially extend the area’s known gold mineralisation. Venus also hopes the campaign will convert portions of the indicated gold mineralisation to the measured category and enable it to collect sufficient samples for more comprehensive metallurgical test work and other studies. Its neighbour, Rox Resources, has signalled its willingness to negotiate a potential mine gate ***** agreement on a best endeavours basis as part of the transaction consolidating interest in the company’s Youanmi gold project. The applicated 415ha mining lease includes additional areas considered prospective for additional gold resources and for position open pits, waste dumps and stockpiles. Future work programs will include pit optimisation studies, additional drilling in key areas and metallurgical test work to confirm expected high gold recoveries. Venus believes successful exploration drilling could significantly change the flavour and scope of the resource in this area and be a valuable add-on to the current metrics. If the gold price keeps trending up, fast tracking this project could reap rewards sooner rather than later. Is your ASX-listed company doing something interesting? The Tale Of Bistun Review – Duuro The Tale Of Bistun Review – Duuro Duuro says: “The Tale of Bistun is a modest but earnest attempt to bring Persian mythology to life through interactive storytelling. Its greatest strength lies in its narrative presentation, particularly its excellent narrator who guides players through this tale of love and loss. While the gameplay mechanics are basic and the combat system lacks depth, the game’s brief runtime prevents these limitations from becoming too problematic.” Source link #Tale #Bistun #Review #Duuro Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
