Rex frontman Marc Bolan are among those to be recognised with blue plaques in London, English Heritage has announced. People whose creative achievements have helped shape the capital were the focus of the charity’s awards this year. Others to be honoured include novelist Barbara Pym, artist Graham Sutherland, ballerina Alicia Markova and poet, playwright, broadcaster, and campaigner Una Marson. English Heritage said the plaques would celebrate their impact on London’s cultural landscape. English Heritage’s curatorial director Matt Thompson said: “From literature and art to dance and music, these figures helped shape the London we know today. “Their contributions not only had a profound impact on their fields but also continue to inspire generations.” Getty Images English Heritage said Marc Bolan’s “iconic look, featuring sequins, feather boas, and platform boots” defined Glam Rock’s aesthetic and “challenged traditional notions of masculinity” Bolan helped spearhead the Glam Rock movement of the 1970s and was known for his flamboyant style and fusion of rock, folk, and glittering theatrics, making hits like Get It On and Ride a White Swan. English Heritage said his “iconic look, featuring sequins, feather boas, and platform boots” defined Glam Rock’s aesthetic and “challenged traditional notions of masculinity”. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2020 and English Heritage said his plaque would hopefully be installed at one of his west London addresses. You may want to buy before spring You may want to buy before spring Mortgage interest rates have increased today, though not by much. According to Zillow, the average 30-year fixed rate has risen by five basis points to 6.59%, and the 15-year fixed rate is up four basis points to 5.91%. Rates have probably inched up in anticipation of the Bureau of Labor Statistics releasing new inflation data today. While mortgage rates hold relatively steady, home prices continue to rise. In December, the median home price increased by 6% from the end of 2023 to $404,400, marking the 18th consecutive month of year-over-year price gains and the largest annual growth since October 2022. It may be a good time to lock in a rate and buy a house before the busy spring home-buying season gets underway. Have questions about buying, owning, or selling a house? Submit your question to Yahoo’s panel of Realtors using this Google form. Here are the current mortgage rates, according to the latest Zillow data: 30-year fixed: 6.59% 20-year fixed: 6.40% 15-year fixed: 5.91% 5/1 ARM: 6.62% 7/1 ARM: 6.71% 30-year VA: 6.05% 15-year VA: 5.48% 5/1 VA: 6.07% 30-year FHA: 5.67% 15-year FHA: 5.25% Remember, these are the national averages and rounded to the nearest hundredth. Learn more: Here’s how mortgage rates are determined These are today’s mortgage refinance rates, according to the latest Zillow data: 30-year fixed: 6.64% 20-year fixed: 6.38% 15-year fixed: 6.00% 5/1 ARM: 6.60% 7/1 ARM: 6.42% 30-year VA: 6.05% 15-year VA: 5.64% 5/1 VA: 6.16% 30-year FHA: 6.22% 15-year FHA: 5.91% Again, the numbers provided are national averages rounded to the nearest hundredth. Mortgage refinance rates are often higher than rates when you buy a house, although that’s not always the case. This embedded content is not available in your region. Use Yahoo Finance’s free mortgage calculator to see how various interest rates and term lengths will impact your monthly mortgage payment. It also shows how the home price and down payment amount play into things. Our calculator includes homeowners insurance and property taxes in your monthly payment estimate. You even have the option to enter costs for private mortgage insurance (PMI) and homeowners’ association dues if those apply to you. These details result in a more accurate monthly payment estimate than if you simply calculated your mortgage principal and interest. There are two main advantages to a 30-year fixed mortgage: Your payments are lower, and your monthly payments are predictable. A 30-year fixed-rate mortgage has relatively low monthly payments because you’re spreading your repayment out over a longer ******* of time than with, say, a 15-year mortgage. Your payments are predictable because, unlike with an adjustable-rate mortgage (ARM), your rate isn’t going to change from year to year. Most years, the only things that might affect your monthly payment are any changes to your homeowners insurance or property taxes. The main disadvantage to 30-year fixed mortgage rates is mortgage interest — both in the short and long term. A 30-year fixed term comes with a higher rate than a shorter fixed term, and it’s higher than the intro rate to a 30-year ARM. The higher your rate, the higher your monthly payment. You’ll also pay much more in interest over the life of your loan due to both the higher rate and the longer term. The pros and cons of 15-year fixed mortgage rates are basically swapped from the 30-year rates. Yes, your monthly payments will still be predictable, but another advantage is that shorter terms come with lower interest rates. Not to mention, you’ll pay off your mortgage 15 years sooner. So you’ll save potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars in interest over the course of your loan. However, because you’re paying off the same amount in half the time, your monthly payments will be higher than if you choose a 30-year term. Dig deeper: 15-year vs. 30-year mortgages Adjustable-rate mortgages lock in your rate for a predetermined amount of time, then change it periodically. For example, with a 5/1 ARM, your rate stays the same for the first five years and then goes up or down once per year for the remaining 25 years. The main advantage is that the introductory rate is usually lower than what you’ll get with a 30-year fixed rate, so your monthly payments will be lower. (Current average rates don’t reflect this, though — fixed rates are actually lower. Talk to your lender before deciding between a fixed or adjustable rate.) With an ARM, you have no idea what mortgage rates will be like once the intro-rate ******* ends, so you risk your rate increasing later. This could ultimately end up costing more, and your monthly payments are unpredictable from year to year. But if you plan to move before the intro-rate ******* is over, you could reap the benefits of a low rate without risking a rate increase down the road. Learn more: Adjustable-rate vs. fixed-rate mortgage The national average 30-year mortgage rate is 6.59% right now, according to Zillow. But keep in mind that averages can vary depending on where you live. For example, if you’re buying in a city with a high cost of living, rates could be even higher. Mortgage rates will probably decrease by the end of 2025. However, any declines will likely be gradual — and they could get higher before they get lower. Mortgage rates aren’t dropping — they’ve actually been fairly stagnant over the last couple of weeks, inching up and down sporadically. In many ways, securing a low mortgage refinance rate is similar to when you bought your home. Try to improve your credit score and lower your debt-to-income ratio (DTI). Refinancing into a shorter term will also land you a lower rate, though your monthly mortgage payments will be higher. Source link #buy #spring Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

With Reduced Fees, These 2 Vanguard ETFs Look Even Better
Pelican Press posted a topic in World News
With Reduced Fees, These 2 Vanguard ETFs Look Even Better With Reduced Fees, These 2 Vanguard ETFs Look Even Better Vanguard just lowered the fees on 168 share classes of its funds and ETFs. It was the largest fee reduction in the companyʻs history. Two excellent Vanguard ETFs were among those that saw their fees reduced. Vanguard just implemented its largest fee cut ever. The Vanguard Group, the second largest manager of exchange-traded funds (ETFs), is a pioneer in the asset management business. It was the first company to create an index mutual fund when founder John Bogle did it in 1975. He was also a champion of low fees on mutual funds, and Vanguard has been known for its low fund fees ever since. “In investing, realize that you get what you don’t pay for,” Bogle, who died in 2019, once said. “Whatever future returns the markets are generous enough to deliver, few investors will succeed in capturing 100% of those returns, simply because of the high costs of investing—all those commissions, management fees, investment expenses, yes, even taxes—so pare them to the bone.” Vanguard has heeded that advice for 50 years as its low-fee strategy has allowed Vanguard to become one of the largest money managers in the world. Last week, it pared the fees even closer to the bone. The firm launched its largest fee reduction ever, reducing the expense ratios on 168 share classes of its funds, saving investors a total of $350 million this year alone. But beyond the savings, when expense ratios are lower, investment returns are generally higher, as fees come out of returns. So, some of the already lowest fees in the business just got even lower. Here are two Vanguard ETFs in particular that look even better right now. 1.Vanguard Information Technology ETF With some $100 billion in assets under management, the Vanguard Information Technology ETF (NYSE:) is the second-largest technology sector ETF and one of the top performers. Over the past 10 years, it has posted an average annualized return of 21.1%. Over the past five years, the ETF has an average annualized return of 20.4%, and over the past one year it is up 25.6%. This ETF, which tracks the MSCI US IMI (LON:) 25/50 Information Technology Index, is broader than many of its competitors, holding 316 stocks of various cap sizes with a focus on stocks that serve the computer and electronics industries. Its top three holdings are Apple (NASDAQ:), NVIDIA (NASDAQ:), and Microsoft (NASDAQ:)). It was among the ETFs that saw its expense ratios lowered as Vanguard dropped it to 0.09% from 0.10%. One of its primary competitors, The Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:), also dropped its expense ratio from 0.09% to 0.08%, matching the Fidelity MSCI Information Technology Index ETF (NYSE:) at 0.08%. The three are well below the average for technology ETFs as they compete for market share. 2. Vanguard Dividend Appreciation ETF Another ETF that saw its expense ratio decrease is the Vanguard Dividend Appreciation ETF (NYSE:). This ETF tracks the S&P U.S. Dividend Growers Index, which includes mostly large-cap stocks with a history of growing their dividends year after year. In a choppy and volatile market like we are expected to have in 2025, this ETF of stable growers should be in higher demand. In addition, the dividend income it generates will boost its total return if the dividends are invested back into the fund. The Vanguard Dividend Appreciation ETF has posted solid returns over the years, with an average annualized return of 12.1% over the past 10 years. Its five-year average annualized return is also 12.1% and it has returned 19.3% over the past one year. The portfolio holds 337 stocks with Broadcom (NASDAQ:), Apple, and Microsoft the three largest positions. But then the next three are more traditional value stocks, including JPMorgan Chase (NYSE:), Visa (NYSE:), and Exxon Mobil (NYSE:). Vanguard reduced the expense ratio for this ETF from a miniscule 0.6% to an even lower 0.5%. An investment in these two excellent ETFs is a win-win, as you are paying even lower fees and potentially higher returns. Indian warplane maker promises faster delivery after air chief’s rebuke Indian warplane maker promises faster delivery after air chief’s rebuke By Shivam Patel BENGALURU (Reuters) -India’s state fighter jet maker Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) said it understood why India’s air force was impatient over delays in delivering warplanes and would start rolling them out once General Electric supplied engines for them. In a pre-scheduled press conference on Tuesday that was held a day after the head of the air force rebuked company officials, HAL Chairman D.K. Sunil said when asked about the delays: “The concern of the air chief is understandable. Of course, his squadron strengths are going down.” “We have now promised that we will have all the structures ready,” Sunil said. “We are building this. Once the engines are available, this will start rolling out.” The Indian Air Force’s fleet of mainly ex-Soviet aircraft has been operating with only 31 fighter squadrons compared with a target of 42, frustrating its officials given the country’s tense relations with neighbours China and Pakistan. The Air Force has ordered 83 Mk-1A light combat aircraft from HAL, an advanced variant of the operational Mk-1 “Tejas”, with deliveries initially planned to start in February 2024 as part of a 364.68 billion rupees ($4.20 billion) contract. It plans to procure 97 more Mk-1As, which would take the total of the Tejas group of aircraft to 220. But deliveries have been repeatedly delayed, due in part to the slow arrival of engines from GE, which has been facing supply chain issues. Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh was seen rebuking HAL officials at the Aero India air show in Bengaluru in a video filmed by defence news outlet National Defence that went viral on Tuesday. “At the moment I am just not confident of HAL,” Singh said, seating inside the cockpit of a trainer aircraft as HAL officials crouched by his side on a platform. “I was promised that when I come here in February I will see 11 Mk1As ready, minus the engines,” Singh said. “Not a single one is ready. Not impressed.” India’s defence production secretary, Sanjeev Kumar, said at the same air show that production lines had stabilised both at HAL and GE, and that the Indian company would have the capacity to hand over 16 to 24 aircraft in the fiscal year that starts in April. GE Aerospace referred to a company statement from earlier this month that said the company has so far delivered 65 engines for the LCA Mk-1 programme, and another 99 are on order for the LCA Mk-1A variant. India’s close defence partner Russia this week also offered to make its fifth-generation stealth fighter jet Sukhoi Su-57 in India for the Indian Air Force, by enhancing the Indian production line of the Sukhoi Su-30 aircraft, 260 of which are in India’s fleet. Germany says its warships were sabotaged as concerns mount that Russia is waging a hybrid war Germany says its warships were sabotaged as concerns mount that Russia is waging a hybrid war Germany’s top naval officer said “more than one” of its warships were recently sabotaged. A day before, a local report said a corvette-class vessel had metal shavings poured into its engine system. Without expressly accusing any party, the ******* naval chief warned of a growing threat from Russia. Germany’s naval chief said on Tuesday that several of Berlin’s warships were sabotaged. Vice Adm. Jan Christian Kaack, the inspector of the ******* navy, said at a press conference on Tuesday that the damage involved “more than one unit.” Kaack also said there had been attempted break-ins at ******* naval bases via land and sea, and he spoke of “attempts to approach” uniformed personnel while they were heading home. The vice admiral did not give further details on the sabotage attempts or explicitly say who was behind them. But Kaack issued a general warning about Moscow while speaking with reporters. “The growing threat from Russia is more urgent at the beginning of 2025 than it was two years ago,” he said. Kaack’s comments follow a report published on Monday by the local outlet Süddeutsche Zeitung, which said that ******* police were investigating an incident at a Hamburg shipyard where several dozen kilograms of metal shavings were dumped into a corvette-class vessel’s engine system. Per the joint report from broadcasters WDR and NDR, the corvette was a brand-new ship called the “Emden” awaiting delivery to the ******* military. It’s scheduled for deployment to the Baltic Sea, the outlets reported. Süddeutsche Zeitung wrote that if the shavings hadn’t been detected during an inspection, they would have caused significant damage to the ship. At Tuesday’s press conference, Kaack was asked to address Süddeutsche Zeitung’s report, but he did not directly confirm the “Emden” incident when speaking about sabotage. The “Emden” is one of the five new K130 corvettes that Germany ordered for delivery in 2025 to fulfill its NATO requirements. Naval Vessels Lürssen, the company responsible for building the ships in Hamburg, told Agence France-Presse that the “Emden” had recently completed a “successful sea trial.” It did not respond to a request for comment sent outside regular business hours by Business Insider. Germany is already on high alert for sabotage attempts after multiple incidents in the last two years that include a package catching fire on a plane and a fire at an ammunition factory in Berlin. More recently, a ******* ammo factory in Spain was hit by an explosion in late January that injured six workers. ******* authorities have repeatedly suggested that Russia is the prime suspect, but are still investigating many of these cases. Ukraine’s allies have accused Russia of waging a “hybrid war” against the West, with reports of an attempted assassination against a defense contractor CEO and the growing assessment that Russia-linked oil tankers damaged undersea infrastructure cables in the Baltic Sea. The Russian government and the ******* navy did not respond to requests for comment from ***, sent outside regular business hours. Too often, portable power solutions with large capacities miss the mark by being too bulky or heavy for convenient transport – going against the entire reason that people would want them in the first place. But not any more. In a remarkable engineering achievement, Jackery has managed to pack 2kWh of capacity into their new Explorer 2000V2 — a device so efficiently designed that it’s even more compact than Jackery’s own impressively portable 1kWh model — fundamentally changing what’s possible in the world of portable power. Automotive innovation meets portable power (Image credit: Jackery) The Explorer 2000V2, launching on 13 February 2025, introduces an automotive-inspired innovation that transforms portable power design. At its heart lies the industry-first EV-level CTB (Cell to Body) structure – a revolutionary approach that’s similar to one used by automotive giants like Tesla and BYD in their vehicles’ integrated battery systems. Just as modern electric vehicles integrate battery packs directly into their chassis for optimal efficiency, Jackery has adapted this sophisticated engineering principle for portable power. The implementation moves beyond the traditional three-level assembly model of regular battery packs by directly integrating battery cells into a honeycomb structure within the bottom shell. By adopting this EV-inspired approach, Jackery has achieved nearly double the space utilisation of conventional designs, reaching an impressive 59% efficiency while eliminating the need for traditional mounting brackets. What does this new design mean in the real world? The numbers tell a compelling story. Weighing just 17.5kg and measuring 33.5 x 26.4 x 29.2cm, the Explorer 2000V2 delivers a substantial 2042Wh capacity with a 2200W output. This achievement becomes even more impressive when compared to other mainstream 2kWh LFP power stations – the physically larger Ecoflow Delta 2 Max (23 kg), Bluetti AC200L (28.3 kg), and Anker Solix Powerhouse 767 (30.5 kg) all require significantly more space and weight to deliver comparable power. Advanced technology for enhanced performance (Image credit: Jackery) The Explorer 2000V2’s innovative design extends beyond mere size reduction — it also represents a significant upgrade in battery technology, featuring an advanced LiFePO4 battery that ensures enhanced durability, improved safety, and an extended lifecycle. The system is also protected by Jackery’s advanced Charge Shield 2.0 technology, incorporating a GaN bidirectional inverter that reduces energy loss by 51.6% compared to the industry average of 10%. This remarkable efficiency is complemented by an incredibly impressive 10-year lifespan, with an equally impressive 4000-cycle, 70% capacity retention. Safety stands at the forefront of design too, with 62 protective mechanisms providing dual physical protections for reliable operation. As a result, the Explorer 2000V2 has earned rigorous safety certifications from TÜV Rheinland and holds both CE and CB certifications, signifying compliance with European Union requirements for electromagnetic safety and overall product safety. Versatility for every scenario (Image credit: Jackery) The Explorer 2000V2 also excels in practical applications, making it ideal for camping, outdoor fieldwork, and home emergency backup. Users can simultaneously power up to six devices through its comprehensive range of outputs — two AC ports, two USB-C ports, USB-A, and a car output thrown in for good measure. Wall charging options include a fast charging mode that achieves 80% capacity in just 1.1 hours (and a full charge in 1.7 hours), while a whisper-quiet mode operates at less than 30 dB for undisturbed operation. For emergency situations, the flash charging mode, accessible through the companion app, can reach 80% capacity in just 52 minutes. For sustainable power users, solar charging with one or two Jackery SolarSaga 200W panels offers a fast and efficient power boost, with the panels designed for 4000 fold cycles of reliable performance. Limited-time launch offers (Image credit: Jackery) Early adopters can secure the Explorer 2000V2 at a special launch price of £999 (regular price £1,399) between 13-20 February 2025. The Solar Generator 2000V2 bundle, which includes a 200W panel, will be available at £1,299 (regular price £1,999). TechRadar readers can also enjoy an additional 5% discount using code ‘techradar’ at Jackery’s *** online shop until 13th March 2025. A new era of portable power The Explorer 2000V2 represents more than just another portable power station – it’s a fundamental reimagining of what’s possible in mobile energy solutions. By combining premium quality, advanced safety features, and industry-leading innovation, Jackery has created a power station that truly delivers on both capacity and convenience. Whether for outdoor adventures, professional fieldwork, or home backup, this sophisticated power station sets a new standard for portable power solutions, letting users explore further with confidence and ease. Make European Equities Great Again: Is A New Cyclical Bull Market Beginning? Make European Equities Great Again: Is A New Cyclical Bull Market Beginning? If you’ve been fixated on the news flow around tariffs and stuck on the old narrative that Europe is doomed and can only regulate vs innovate then you might have missed the fact that European equities are up over +10% YTD. Change is in the air, a key set of breakouts and improving technicals serve as a timely prompt to consider whether there’s more to this —and more left in the move… What’s driving the strength in European Equities: Valuations: unlike expensive US stocks, European stocks are still cheap/reasonably priced, and trade at a record low valuation discount vs US. The thing I always emphasize is that when valuations reach such extremes they have a habit of speaking for themselves; the rubber band eventually snaps back. Monetary Policy: the European Central Bank began rate cuts earlier (June 2024) than the Fed, and cut by a larger amount (from 4.5% to 2.9%); a tailwind for the economy and markets. Geopolitics: odds are the Russia/Ukraine conflict is going to be put on hold soon, and hopefully an enduring and constructive peace deal can be reached. This will remove war related costs, decrease uncertainty, take tail-risks of wider spillover off the table +maybe even help Europe’s economy through rebuilding. Politics: Germany is looking likely to see a shift in government from left to right in its upcoming elections (echoing the global trend as the pendulum swings), this will likely see a more growth/business-friendly regime, with the prospect of infrastructure investment, lower energy costs, and tax cuts. This positive shift will boost sentiment and if pro-growth policies eventuate will be good for the rest of Europe as its largest economy accelerates. Reforms: there is at least the intention to improve competitiveness e.g. the Draghi report (400 page report on how to boost innovation and competitiveness; there is a strong likelihood at least some of the ideas get implemented), and moves toward greater focus on shareholder returns. China: as I have noted, China’s economy is starting to turn up from recession and prolonged property market downturn, helped by incremental steps up in stimulus — this will be a boost for Europe’s luxury goods companies, and wider export demand (particularly if US tariffs prompt more trading between non-US countries). As you can probably gather, some of these are somewhat short-term or already in the price e.g. monetary policy easing and (geo)politics, but most of them are more medium/longer-term (enduring). So in other words, I would say it looks like the rally and breakout in European equities is a sign of more things to come. Basically, it’s time to discard the old narratives and biases on European equities as a new bull market gets underway Key point: European equities are breaking out and have ample room to run. Bonus Chart – Further Perspective In CPI adjusted terms the looks less impressive, albeit arguably also looks better in terms of potential upside as there remains a large distance to the historical all-time inflation-adjusted highs. The breakout in real terms also looks very compelling. Similarly, relative to the it’s been in a 24-year relative-bear-market. There have been numerous false dawns along that path, but the recent bounce after a failed breakdown to new lows looks promising, especially after the ******* of relative stalemate over the past couple of years. I remain convinced that we are set to see an imminent turnaround in global vs US stocks, and this here is a key part of that story. Consumers are boycotting major retailers. Here’s what they plan for ‘blackout’ on Feb. 28 Consumers are boycotting major retailers. Here’s what they plan for ‘blackout’ on Feb. 28 Consumers are rallying to speak through their wallets − or lack of spending – as a way to protest the retreat by some companies from diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives and President Trump’s actions to eliminate federal DEI programs since taking office. They are calling on consumers to boycott specific retailers and for one day later this month, to refrain from spending any money at all. Numerous social media accounts are sharing the message of a 24-hour consumer spending blackout planned for Feb. 28. Consumers are encouraged not to spend money in stores or online for the day and if they have emergencies or essentials they need, they are encouraged to support a local small business. It is unclear which organization started the Feb. 28 blackout, but several Instagram posts by a group called The People’s Union and its founder, who goes by the Instagram handle “TheOneCalledJai” have been reshared and circulated about the Feb. 28 one-day blackout. Shopping carts sit at the ready in the brand new Target store in the Cross County Center in Yonkers, which is set to officially open on Sunday, Oct. 22, 2023. From Bud Light to Target: Boycotts take off The strategy has worked for the political right. In campaigns using hashtags and slogans like “go woke go broke,” boycotts waged by conservative activists have taken aim at the nation’s largest consumer names including retail chain Target. Some have succeeded in slashing sales and forcing policy changes. Followers of Robby Starbuck pressured the likes of Walmart, Ford, Harley-Davidson and Tractor Supply to rein in their DEI efforts. Bud Light, owned by beer giant Anheuser-Busch, struggled after conservative blowback over a social media campaign with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney. Target moved its Pride displays from the entrances to the back of stores after shoppers confronted employees and vandalized displays. Last year, Target scaled back its Pride collection and did not carry the collection in all stores. A growing number of companies have retreated on DEI commitments as those efforts come under greater scrutiny in a rapidly changing legal and political climate. Shortly after taking office, Trump ordered federal agencies to crack down on DEI and investigate the DEI programs of private companies. Now Target and other companies find themselves under attack from the other side, facing calls for boycotts from DEI supporters angry over the rollbacks. That’s an increasingly common dilemma for corporations and one of their own making, said David Primo, professor of political science and business administration at the University of Rochester in New York, who blames years of “haphazard policymaking” by companies on contentious issues like DEI. “Companies need to figure out what they will take positions on, what they won’t take positions on, and then stand firm,” Primo said. “Holding your finger to the political winds is not an effective way to run a company in a polarized world.” What is the Feb. 28 consumer economic blackout? In one of several videos about the Feb. 28 blackout, the Instagram handle “TheOneCalledJai” said the day of economic resistance is to show that “we the people are the system.” “For decades, they have told us that we are powerless, that we have no control, and that this system is too big, too strong, too unshakable.” “We are going to remind them who has the power. For one day, we turn it off for one day. We shut it down for one day. We remind them that this country does not belong to the elite, it belongs to the people and this will work,” the Instagram video said. “Some of you might say one day won’t make a difference and that’s exactly what they want you to believe,” he said. “If enough of us participate, they will feel it and if they don’t listen, we escalate.” A second economic blackout aimed at blocking purchases from Amazon from March 7 through March 14 has also been announced by the same group. In an interview with USA TODAY, John Schwarz, who is the man behind the Instagram handle, said what started as a bold idea while he was posting a video to express his frustration has gained traction quickly. “I’m trying to use my platform right now to organize and gather people who can see past what divides us and potentially maybe down the road legally find some way to unionize ourselves, to create a powerful voice within the system to create change,” Schwarz said. “But for now, the economic blackout is about getting people together, up off the couch, so to speak, to do something together,” he said. Schwarz said the economic blackout isn’t to protest one specific thing, but the timing is right. Schwarz said he will start with the one-day economic blackout and March Amazon boycott to get people gathered and then expand to monthly boycotts of other businesses “that are really the biggest offenders within the system.” Schwarz said he is running the effort alone, but is looking for people to join him. A website, www.thepeoplesunionusa.com, also has information on the efforts. Spend your money smart: Sign up for USA TODAY’s Daily Money newsletter. Target boycott coincides with ****** History Month A different boycott against Target is underway after civil rights activists in Minnesota encouraged consumers to not shop at the Minneapolis-based retailer. The boycott started Feb. 1 in response to the Target’s decision to phase out DEI initiatives. It is an indefinite boycott until Target changes its actions, said Nekima Levy Armstrong, a civil rights attorney and founder of the Racial Justice Network. The DEI retreat “really felt like a slap in the face,” Levy Armstrong told USA TODAY. “Target was a beloved community that seemed to build its model around embracing diversity and being intentionally inclusive of having ****** brands on the shelves, having beautiful ****** History Month displays. For them to essentially bow down to the mandates of the Trump administration was unacceptable,” she said. The boycott coincides with ****** History Month. Organizers, which include several other civil rights organizations in Minnesota, have also since encouraged consumers to support ******-owned brands in Target by buying directly from the businesses’ websites after some ******-owned businesses expressed concern about the boycott. Levy Armstrong said the support of the boycott has been good, and she sees other boycotts planned against Target and other companies as “complementary.” Her groups’ efforts for now will be focused on Target, she said. “People feel empowered in a moment in which they felt powerless and somewhat helpless,” she said. More consumer boycotts planned At least two other consumer boycotts are planned. Comedian and actress Leslie Jones announced on her Instagram account planned boycotts and buying actions starting in February and continuing through the end of the year. That plan explained in the video starts and ends with encouraging purchases directly from ******-owned businesses and then planned boycotts for one to two months at a time against Walmart, Target and Amazon. Pastor Jamal-Harrison Bryant, senior pastor of New Birth Missionary ******** Church in Georgia and an activist and author, has called on the faith community to start a 40-day fast from shopping at Target during Lent starting on March 5, which is Ash Wednesday. A website, www.targetfast.org, has also been created offering information. Target and Amazon did not return messages seeking comment about potential boycotts. A Walmart spokesperson declined comment. Boycotts can be successful, but for different reasons Boycotts can be pretty effective, but not in the way that consumers think, said Brayden King, a professor of management and organizations at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. The boycotts create attention for the cause, including from the media, which “puts a negative spotlight on the companies they’re boycotting and that could in the long run have reputational consequences,” King told USA TODAY. “What boycotts don’t seem to do is have much of an impact on consumer behavior,” King said. Consumers can usually handle a boycott for a day, “but over longer periods of time, most boycotts don’t have any kind of impact on sales.” That’s because consumer purchasing, especially for online shopping, “tends to occur in private where others can’t see or judge them.” King said a boycott of Bud Light in 2023, sparked by conservative consumers upset that the beer maker had teamed up with a transgender influencer, was successful because of a couple key reasons. People tend to consume beer in public, so they could be held accountable, King said. There also were easy substitutes of other beer brands that consumers participating in the boycott could choose instead. For a boycott to be successful, organizers also have to figure out what success means: “Is it that customers can feel better about expressing their values, or is it intended to change corporate behavior?” said Gerald Davis, a professor of management and sociology at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business. A boycott needs a clear goal, a clear target group and an identifiable representative of that group who can negotiate with the target on their behalf, he said. “Simply asking customers to stop buying a product to express disapproval is not likely to produce any recognizable change in what business does,” he said. Consumers can express their voice through a boycott Still, a boycott can be a positive way for consumers to express themselves through action, King said. “Saying you’re going to boycott something does feel like you’re casting a vote that you hope makes a difference down the road,” he said. It is a way for people upset about the Trump administration’s actions or companies’ responses to DEI initiatives, “to convert grievances into action,” King said. Gas pumps are pictured in Oklahoma City, on Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2023. Too many protest actions can cause confusion There are also several social media messages that outline other boycott efforts in different time frames against specific retailers. That is usually “one of the biggest difficulties activists face, which is they’re not just competing with all the other events and things that are happening with the world, but also competing with each other and for attention,” said King. The most successful boycotts are ones where “there’s a lot of unity among the various strands of people who count themselves…in that camp,” he said. DEI rollbacks: Trump’s anti-DEI orders worry some federal workers Shopping in support of a business can also work The Rev. Al Sharpton and the National Action Network have recently taken action at two Costco locations in New York City and Union, New Jersey to bring supporters to Costco to spend money in support of the company board of director’s actions to vote down an effort to drop DEI efforts. National Action Network also said in a press release about the “buy-cott” efforts that it will lead “a strategic boycott in the next 90 days of two companies that have dropped their DEI commitments amid public pressure.” No details have been released.
