Human rights breaches in Türkiye, Nicaragua and Nigeria | News
Violations of the rule of law, principles of democracy, and fundamental rights in Türkiye, notably the cases of mayors Mehmet Sıddık Akış and Abdullah Zeydan
MEPs are deeply concerned about Türkiye’s disregard of the rule of law and the government’s violation of the fundamental principles of democracy, such as the practice of replacing democratically elected mayors with government-appointed trustees in predominantly Kurdish regions.
Condemning the arbitrary dismissal and imprisonment of democratically elected mayors, MEPs call for their immediate release, acquittal and reinstatement. They demand judicial reforms to abolish the trustee system, especially given the impact of these violations on local governance in Kurdish-majority areas, underlining the need to resume the Kurdish peace process.
MEPs recall that EU financial assistance to Türkiye is conditional upon the country’s respect for the rule of law and fundamental rights, and urge the Commission to consider imposing restrictive measures against Turkish officials involved in these violations under the EU Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime.
The resolution was adopted by show of hands. The full version will be available here (13.02.2025).
The Ortega-Murillo regime’s repression in Nicaragua, targeting human rights defenders, political opponents and religious communities
Parliament strongly condemns Ortega-Murillo regime’s systemic human rights violations against Nicaraguan citizens and its persecution of religious leaders. MEPs denounce the use of exile as a weapon against critics and demand the regime respects the right to dissent. The immediate release of arbitrarily detained people and the restoration of the rule of law as well as guarantees of human rights compliance are essential for any dialogue and EU funds allocation, MEPs say.
They also call on the regime to annul constitutional reforms and repressive totalitarian laws in order to respect its international human rights obligations. Member states must open investigations through the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity and add Daniel Ortega, Rosario Murillo and their inner circle to the list of sanctioned individuals, MEPs say.
The resolution was adopted by show of hands. The full version will be available here (13.02.2025).
The ongoing detention and risk of death sentences for individuals in Nigeria charged with blasphemy, notably the case of Yahaya Sharif-Aminu
MEPs urge the ********* authorities to uphold human rights and religious freedom by releasing Yahaya Sharif-Aminu, a ********* singer who faces blasphemy allegations, alongside all other individuals facing blasphemy allegations.
They condemn blasphemy laws as violations of international law and ********* constitutional rights, stressing the need to uphold human rights throughout the country and align the federal state and Sharia laws with human rights protections, including the abolition of provisions on religious insults in criminal law. Parliament also urges Nigeria to abolish the death penalty in all cases.
The resolution urges Nigeria to combat false blasphemy accusations and mob violence in order to ensure perpetrators face justice.
The resolution was adopted by show of hands. The full version will be available here (13.02.2025)

Kai Havertz: Arsenal forward set to miss rest of season with hamstring injury
Kai Havertz: Arsenal forward set to miss rest of season with hamstring injury
Arsenal forward Kai Havertz is set to miss the rest of the season after suffering a hamstring injury during the team’s Dubai training camp.
The 25-year-old’s absence will leave the North Londoners without a recognised striker until the end of the 2024-25 season.
The Athletic first reported a torn hamstring and that his season was likely to be over, external.
Sources close to Havertz expect surgery will be needed after he flew back with the team on Tuesday.
Arsenal have yet to comment publicly on Havertz’s injury. Manager Mikel Arteta will be asked about the extent of the injury at Friday’s news conference before his side take on Leicester City on Saturday.
Striker Gabriel Jesus has also had surgery on an anterior cruciate ligament in his knee while star forward Bukayo Saka has had surgery on a hamstring injury sustained in December.
Gabriel Martinelli injured his hamstring last week in the Carabao Cup defeat at Newcastle and is reportedly out for “more than one month”.
Havertz has made 34 appearances across all competitions this season and is the club’s top scorer with 15 goals and five assists.
The addition of Havertz to that injury list will leave Arteta seriously short of goal scorers after the club were unable to sign attacking reinforcements in the January transfer window. The Spanish boss said he was “disappointed” with the lack of activity with an offer for Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins rejected.
Rumours linking them to Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, Wolves’ Matheus Cunha, Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko and Brighton’s Evan Ferguson went nowhere.
Criticism had already been levelled at Arsenal even before these injury problems with many pundits and fans suggesting they needed a striker to maintain hopes of competing for a trophy.
Arteta said last week that Havertz might have to start every game for the rest of the season, adding that his other options to play in the position would be wingers Leandro Trossard, Raheem Sterling and Ethan Nwaneri.
Arsenal flew out for warm-weather training last Thursday after being knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Newcastle in the semi-final. They were not involved in this weekend’s FA Cup fixtures following their third-round defeat by Manchester United.
Last season, after a similar break, Arsenal went on to win 16 of their next 18 games.
They currently sit second in the Premier League, six points adrift of leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand.

3 Dividend ETFs to Maximize Passive Income
3 Dividend ETFs to Maximize Passive Income
Dividend exchange-traded funds (ETFs) combine the steady passive income stream of dividend stocks with the ease of a fund managed by a third-party provider, giving investors the best of two different worlds. For investors interested in dividend-paying companies, targeting individual names can sometimes necessitate keeping an eye on dividend yield, payout ratio, and other metrics which indicate the long-term viability of continued dividend payments. ETFs focused on dividend companies, on the other hand, can take a lot of this work out of the picture.
Investors are drawn to ETFs in part as well because of their low cost. While this is true for many ETFs, it is not always the case, and indeed some of the leading dividend funds have higher expense ratios than many other exchange-traded vehicles. Nonetheless, the potential passive income these funds provide may far outweigh the relatively high fees they carry. Here are three red-hot dividend (or dividend-like) ETFs to consider for 2025.
1. Amplify High-Income ETF: Unique Access to Closed-End Funds
The Amplify High Income ETF (NYSE:) is a unique ETF in that its portfolio consists of roughly 60 closed-end funds, meaning that it in fact does not target traditional dividend stocks at all. Closed-end funds are investment companies that offer a one-time ***** of a specified number of shares and then use the capital for investment purposes.
One of YYY’s strengths is that many investors are unaware of closed-end funds or otherwise reluctant to focus on them. The ETF achieves a broadly diversified pool of closed-end funds in its portfolio by evaluating these vehicles based on yield, discount to net asset value, and liquidity.
The result is that YYY is a powerful monthly income generator. As of January 31, 2025, it enjoys a distribution rate of 12.13%. Even given a total expense ratio of 3.25%, generally quite a bit higher than most other ETFs, investors may find this fund to be a compelling prospect given its distribution and speciality focus.
2. Invesco KBW High Dividend Yield Financial ETF: Targeted Focus on Dividend-Paying Financial Institutions
Another dividend fund with a unique focus is the Invesco KBW High Dividend Yield Financial ETF (NASDAQ:). This ETF focuses on U.S.-based, publicly listed financial companies with competitive dividend yields, making it one of the few dividend plays to provide exposure to dividend-paying banks as a group. Though KBWD is a multi-cap fund it is predominantly focused on small-cap stocks because of its underlying index, which uses a modified dividend yield-weighted methodology to identify targets.
KBWD’s expense ratio of 2.02% is also higher than many other ETFs available today. However, it also enjoys a tremendously high dividend yield of 11.99% as of February 11, 2025. Still, investors should keep in mind that KBWD carries a fairly substantial risk as a result of its focus on smaller financial institutions that may not be as stable as their larger peers. The fund has a narrow focus and fills a very particular niche, but for investors interested in maximizing dividend yield with a special interest in the financials sector, and who possess sufficient risk tolerance to take on the bet, KBWD can be a worthwhile option to consider.
3. First Trust Nasdaq BuyWrite Income ETF: Income Through Options
The First Trust Nasdaq BuyWrite Income ETF (NASDAQ:) is another fund generating income in a somewhat unorthodox way. FTQI writes U.S. exchange-traded covered call options on the and then generates cash flow through premiums on those options. The fund makes monthly distributions of those options premiums to shareholders.
FTQI’s approach has been successful—it generates an effective dividend yield of 11.53% as of February 11, 2025. The majority of the securities it targets with its options strategy are in the information technology and communication services sectors, both of which are highly popular among investors and likely to see strong demand among options traders.
FTQI’s strategy also enables it to provide traditional returns as well. In the year leading to February 11, 2025, it has returned nearly 17%. While this is below the over the same *******, it is an added bonus on top of the income generated through options premiums. Notably, also, the fund has an expense ratio of just 0.75%, making it the most affordable of the ETFs on this list.

Musk will withdraw OpenAI bid if ChatGPT maker stays nonprofit: lawyers
Musk will withdraw OpenAI bid if ChatGPT maker stays nonprofit: lawyers
Elon Musk will withdraw his $97.4 billion bid for OpenAI’s non-profit arm if the ChatGPT maker stops its conversion into a for-profit entity, according to a court filing.
“If OpenAI, Inc.’s Board is prepared to preserve the charity’s mission and stipulate to take the ‘for *****’ sign off its assets by halting its conversion, Musk will withdraw the bid,” read the filing, which was submitted Wednesday to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.
“Otherwise, the charity must be compensated by what an arms-length buyer will pay for its assets,” it added.
On Monday, Musk, along with his artificial intelligence company xAI and a consortium of investors, launched a bid to acquire OpenAI’s non-profit arm for $97.4 billion, accusing the firm and its CEO Sam Altman of abandoning its original mission to develop AI for good and of pursuing profits instead.
Altman has rebuffed the offer, telling CNBC that the move is just an effort by Musk to “slow down a competitor.”
OpenAI was initially founded as a non-profit in 2015 and later converted to a “capped profit” model in 2019. Musk helped launch the AI research firm, to which he says he donated $50 million.
Since his departure from the company’s board in 2018, the Tesla and SpaceX founder has expressed vocal frustration with OpenAI’s move toward becoming a for-profit company.
Musk reiterated those concerns on Thursday, speaking to an audience via videolink at the World Governments Summit in Dubai.
Asked by the United Arab Emirates’ AI Minister Omar al Olama whether a company like OpenAI could really scale as a non-profit, Musk replied:
“I think the evidence was there in that OpenAI has gotten this far while having at least a sort of dual profit, non-profit role. What they’re trying to do now is completely delete the non-profit. And that seems really going too far.”
“I provided all of the funding for OpenAI for the first almost $50 million for nothing, as a non-profit, and it was meant to be open source,” Musk went on. “And so, you know, I think this is analogous to, like … if you find a non-profit to preserve the Amazon rainforest, but then … instead they turn into a lumber company and chop down the trees and sell them for wood.”
He added that OpenAI should now change its name to “maximum profit AI,” or to “closed for voracious profit.”
CNBC has contacted OpenAI for comment. Altman in December said that his company decided to move to a capped-profit structure in part because Musk stopped funding it, while supporters of OpenAI’s conversion to a fully for-profit public benefit corporation — which could take two years — say this will better allow it to scale and make it more attractive to investors.
Asked on Tuesday how seriously he is taking Musk’s bid, Altman, who previously declined the offer in a post on X, replied, “Not particularly.”

GE Vernova is a buy as energy demand grows, Baird says
GE Vernova is more than ready to meet the rising demand for energy, according to Baird. The firm initiated coverage of the energy services and equipment company with an outperform rating and a $448 per share price target. Baird’s forecast implies more than 21% upside from Wednesday’s close. Analyst Ben Kallo said GE Vernova is an essential player to meet rising demand for energy and energy infrastructure, both of which will help margins expand. “The rising demand for energy generation solutions gives the company pricing power for out years which we believe will translate to margin expansion and may provide upside to the long-term financial targets (which extend through 2028),” Kallo said. The analyst also pointed to the company’s non-core businesses as attractive pieces of its portfolio and potential growth drivers, including small modular reactors and and carbon capture, utilization, and sequestration. GEV YTD mountain GE Vernova stock. “The tech portfolio, strong cash flow generation, a clean balance sheet, M & A optionality, and exposure to both gas and electric power make GEV an attractive investment for investors looking to play the rise in data centers/AI theme, in our view,” the analyst added. GE Vernova has advanced more than 12% in 2025, outpacing the S & P 500’s 2.9% advance. Analysts are mostly bullish on GE Vernova. Creative Australia ditches Venice Biennale artistic duo
Creative Australia ditches Venice Biennale artistic duo
The federal government’s arts funding body has ditched the artistic duo selected to represent Australia at the upcoming Venice Biennale.
Artist Khaled Sabsabi and curator Michael Dagostino were announced last week as the pair selected to show at the 2026 event, regarded as the Olympics of the contemporary art world.
But an investigation by The *********** newspaper revealed Sabsabi’s early work includes images of a notorious terrorist leader, and of aircraft hitting the Twin Towers in the 9/11 attacks titled, “Thank You Very Much”.
In an announcement late on Thursday night, Creative Australia said its board had made a unanimous decision not to proceed with the artistic team.
“Creative Australia is an advocate for freedom of artistic expression and is not an adjudicator on the interpretation of art,” it said in a statement.
“However, the board believes a prolonged and divisive debate about the 2026 selection outcome poses an unacceptable risk to public support for Australia’s artistic community and could undermine our goal of bringing Australians together through art and creativity.”
Creative Australia also said it would review the selection process for the event.
In April, Australia won the prestigious Golden Lion at the biennale for the first time, with Archie Moore’s artwork kith and kin.
The artwork has since been gifted to the Tate and the Queensland Art Gallery.

Nintendo Has Acquired a New Anti-Palworld Patent
Nintendo Has Acquired a New Anti-Palworld Patent
Nintendo and the Pokémon Company recently received a new patent in the United States, which could help their lawsuit against Palworld.
According to a report by Games Fray (via Gamerant), Nintendo and the Pokemon Company recently acquired U.S. Patent No. 12,220,638, which helps them fight Palworld in different countries. Players must first learn about a previous patent published on December 31, 2024, to understand the new patent.
On December 31, 2024, U.S. Patent No. 12,179,111 was acquired by Nintendo, where the company outlined a “first mode and a second mode”. In the former, players would use a “catching item” to procure a “field character”, and in the latter, a “fighting character” is released to engage in battle with the “field character”. It was speculated that Palworld changed how Pal Spheres worked in the game when Nintendo was in the process of publishing this patent, as all parties were informed about it a month before it was published.
Nintendo acquired the new U.S. Patent No. 12,220,638 on February 11, 2025, and it was very similar to the one they published at the end of last year. However, some different terms were used in this patent, where “field character” has been replaced by “virtual character” and “catching items” with “obtaining items.” A display indicator for “likelihood of success” for obtaining a virtual character was mentioned, too. Lastly, any mentions of the first and second modes were removed.
So, how does Nintendo’s new patent help their lawsuit against Palworld? The report reveals that with the first patent, Pocketpair argued that there wasn’t a clear separation of a “first mode and second mode” in Palworld. With the new patent, Nintendo is removing the distinction between these first and second modes and adding new terms like “virtual character” and “obtaining items” to increase their chances in the patent infringement lawsuit.
Moreover, Nintendo and the Pokemon Company are not slowing down in their battle against Palworld. They had requested an interview with the patent examiner on February 8, 2025, to help with the rejected claims.
In other news, Pocketpair Publishing is now live. Palworld received five new skins for the Spring Festival. Do you think Nintendo’s new patent help them in their lawsuit against Palworld? Let us know in the comments or on our new community forum!

MEPs want to suspend EU-Rwanda deal on critical raw materials | News
MEPs want to suspend EU-Rwanda deal on critical raw materials | News
In a resolution adopted on Thursday, 13 February, MEPs strongly condemn the occupation of Goma and other territories in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) by M23 rebels and the Rwandan defence forces as an anacceptable breach of the DRC’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
MEPs denounce the indiscriminate attacks involving explosive weapons as well as unlawful killing, *****, and other apparent war crimes in populated areas of North Kivu by all parties. They deplore the use of forced labour, forced recruitment, and other abusive practices, by M23 with the support of Rwanda’s military, and by the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC).
Critical humanitarian situation
Calling for an immediate end to the violence, particularly the mass killings and the use of ***** as a strategic weapon of war, Parliament urges the DRC and Rwanda to investigate and prosecute those responsible for war crimes, including ******* violence, under the principle of command responsibility. MEPs also say that any attack on United Nations-mandated forces is inexcusable and may be considered a war crime.
MEPs are extremely concerned about the critical humanitarian situation in the country and demand the immediate reopening of Goma airport and the creation of humanitarian corridors to re-establish humanitarian operations in eastern DRC.
Immediate suspension of EU Memorandum of Understanding with Rwanda
Parliament regrets the European Union’s failure to take appropriate measures to address the crisis and pressure Rwanda to end its support for M23. It urges the European Commission and the Council to immediately suspend the EU’s Memorandum of Understanding on Sustainable Raw Materials Value Chains with Rwanda, until the country ceases all interference in the DRC, including exporting minerals mined from M23-controlled areas.
MEPs also call on the Commission, EU member states and international financial institutions to freeze direct budget support for Rwanda until it allows for humanitarian access to the crisis area and breaks all links with M23. The Commission and EU countries should also halt their military and security assistance to the Rwandan armed forces to avoid contributing directly or indirectly to abusive military operations in eastern DRC.
MEPs are concerned about the consequences of Russian interference in the conflict, as well as the increasing presence of ******** actors in the DRC’s mining sector and in wider region and working without respect for economic and social responsibility.
Support for peace negotiations
Parliament welcomes the joint SADC and EAC peace summit held in Dar es Salaam on 8 February and expresses its full support for the Luanda and Nairobi peace processes. MEPs call on all countries in the Great Lakes region, in particular the DRC and Rwanda, to urgently pursue negotiations under these frameworks.
The resolution was adopted with 443 votes in favour, 4 against and 48 abstentions.

I am less protected after my *******’s conviction
I am less protected after my *******’s conviction
Katie Hunter
BBC Scotland News
BBC
Amelia Price said she is less protected than before the trial
A woman whose ex-partner was convicted of raping and assaulting her says she will be less protected when he is released from prison later this year than she was before the trial.
Amelia Price told BBC News her abuser was under bail conditions before his conviction but she now faces the “terrifying prospect” he might be able to legally contact her once he has served his sentence.
The 27-year-old is calling for non-harassment orders (NHO) to be mandatory in certain domestic abuse-related cases after the judge chose not to impose one on her abuser.
In a letter to Ms Price the Scottish government said ministers did not think mandatory NHOs would be appropriate in every domestic abuse case.
The Judicial Office for Scotland said judges carefully consider the facts and circumstances of each case when making decisions on non-harassment orders.
Ms Price’s former partner was convicted at the High Court in Edinburgh in 2021 and sentenced to more than four years in prison. He is due to be released later this year.
The judge in the case was required under law to consider a non-harassment order but Ms Price was told he did not impose one because her abuser had not contacted her since she reported him and she no longer lived in Scotland.
Ms Price said that was really difficult to accept.
“For me the only facts and circumstances that should matter was that this man was convicted of abusing (raping and assaulting) me by a jury,” she said.
“The fact he has been sentenced to time in custody offers me very little long-term and I find myself less protected than I was the day I reported him.”
Ms Price said the reason she left Scotland was because of the trauma of what happened to her but added that she still spends a reasonable amount of time in the country and would like the option to return in future.
She also pointed out that her ex-partner was under bail conditions in the lead up to the trial to deter him from contacting her but will not be under those restrictions after he is released.
Waived her anonymity
She told the BBC she does not want to criticise any individual judge but she is critical of the system that allowed the decision to be made.
Ms Price has now waived her anonymity and is lobbying the justice secretary and MSPs to change the law to make non-harassment orders mandatory in ******* offence and domestic abuse cases where the perpetrator is a partner or ex-partner and the victim wants an NHO.
The former Edinburgh University student has spent years researching the subject.
Since 2019 there has been an automatic requirement for the court to consider whether to grant an NHO in cases involving domestic abuse.
One of her freedom of information requests revealed that in recent years non-harassment orders had been imposed in less than 50% of domestic abuse cases or offences where domestic abuse was a factor.
We don’t know how many of the victims in those cases wanted an NHO.
Ms Price said protecting victims must be a priority.
“If we are to exist in a system where victims who report domestic abuse are left no better protected than the day they report it, there’s no incentive for them to report it,” she said.
“I would suggest that the conviction rate will stay as low as it is and no progress will be made until they are made to feel safe.”
Ms Price said she felt that staying silent about the problem would make her complicit.
She said there were so few people who secure ***** convictions to “sound the alarm” and give an “unfiltered view of how dire and unjust the system is” for victims.
“I certainly wouldn’t report again and I think if I had a friend or family member that found themselves in the same position that I did in 2019 I wouldn’t encourage them to come forward either,” she said.
She added that the only thing the justice system had provided her with was further trauma.
“The day the verdict came back the thing that people would say to me was ‘It’s over, It’s finished’. And yet that sentencing was in 2021. We’re now in 2025 and it is still so far from over,” she said.
‘Absolutely deplorable’
When Ms Price complained to the Crown Office about aspects of her case she received a letter stating that if she was concerned she “might find it helpful to obtain independent legal advice about the possibility of seeking a civil non-harassment order”.
She said the idea that she should have to pay for legal advice to protect herself after going through the justice system was “absolutely deplorable”.
***** Crisis Scotland chief executive Sandy Brindley said the system must change.
She said: “When someone has the courage to report a ******* offence and go through what can be a difficult legal process, the least the system should do is ensure their safety.
“Non-harassment orders should be automatic on conviction for any serious ******* offence.”
A spokesperson for the Judicial Office for Scotland said: “In deciding whether or not to impose a non-harassment order, judges will carefully consider the Crown motion and any submissions made to the court by the defence, as well as the particular facts and circumstances of the case in question.”
Dr Emma Forbes, procurator fiscal for domestic abuse at the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COFPS) said: “I acknowledge that Ms Price feels let down and have offered to meet with her to further discuss her concerns.
“COPFS is committed to improving our services by carefully listening to victims, witnesses and survivors.
“Scotland’s prosecutors take domestic abuse and ******* violence very seriously and urge anyone affected by this offending to report it.”
In a letter to Ms Price on Wednesday the Scottish government said: “Scottish ministers do not think it would be appropriate to go further and make the imposition of an NHO mandatory in every case.
“This is because there may be cases where the facts and circumstances are such that it is clear to the court that it is not necessary to make an NHO.”
A Scottish government spokesperson said: “Our sympathies remain with Amelia Price for the anguish she has endured.
“Sentencing is a matter for the independent courts. The Domestic Abuse (S) Act 2018 introduced a mandatory requirement for the courts to consider imposing a non-harassment order in domestic abuse cases.”

Sam Konstas defies cramps to smash career-first One-Day Cup century for NSW
Sam Konstas defies cramps to smash career-first One-Day Cup century for NSW
Sam Konstas has defied a fitness scare to smash his first One-Day Cup century — but the Glenn Maxwell-like effort wasn’t enough to get NSW over the line.
The 19-year-old failed to notch a big score in the Sheffield Shield this week following his early exit from Australia’s Test tour of Sri Lanka, scoring three and 22 against Queensland at the Gabba.
Yet it was a different story when the two teams met at Allan Border Field on Thursday, as seen in the video above.
Walking to the crease with the Blues chasing 311 to win from a rain-shortened 45 overs, Konstas monstered 116 off 98 despite battling cramps in the back half of his innings.
The NSW opener finished with 13 fours and three sixes while coming close to carrying his bat as teammates fell around him.
Tapping into Maxwell’s famous double century in the Cricket World Cup, Konstas kept swinging despite repeatedly attempting to stretch out cramps.
Camera IconKonstas raised the bat for his first domestic one-day ton. Credit: AAP
It finally became too much in the 27th over after sending a ball straight back down the pitch to Queensland spinner Mitch Swepson.
Konstas hopped away from the crease and collapsed to the ground, quickly receiving some help from Bulls wicketkeeper Jimmy Peirson before a NSW official arrived on the scene.
“He’s gone. He’s gone! Cramping big time,” Ray Phillips said in commentary.
Konstas had his calf massaged and looked to be in serious doubt to continue.
“He’s really struggling. I’m not sure he can bat on,” Phillips added.
“I don’t think he can stand up at the moment.”
Camera IconKonstas needed help getting to his feet. Credit: Getty
Konstas barely moved while he was on the ground.
Within a few minutes of resuming he almost fell over again after an attempted reverse sweep, and he limped to a single when a two was on the cards.
Yet soon after that he was back smashing boundaries as he pushed on towards his ton.
He reached the milestone with an outstanding square cut for six.

Konstas fell in the 40th over, all but ending NSW’s hopes of victory.
Queensland dismissed Jack Nisbet three overs later to seal a 54-run win.
Lachlan Hearne received player of the match for his 107 off 91 ****** (five fours, seven sixes) that set up the Bulls’ match-winning total.
After the start of play was delayed by rain, the bowler-friendly conditions meant it was a good toss for NSW to win.
They reduced the home side to 4-54, before Hearne and Max Bryant steadied the innings with their 100-run stand from 78 ******.
Once Bryant was dismissed for 34, Jack Wildermuth was the senior partner in his 120-run stand with Hearne as the conditions became much easier for batting.
Wildermuth belted 83 from 56 ****** with six fours and five sixes.
Hearne also opened up, with four successive sixes to hit Moises Henriques out of the attack.
After Hearne was dismissed Gurinder Sandhu scored a valuable 21no to take the score past 300, while opening bowler Jack Nisbet took 4-49 from his nine overs..
NSW made a solid start, reaching 1-113 in the 18th over, before they crucially lost 3-5.
After Swepson dismissed Matthew Gilkes for 34, Callum Vidler snared two wickets in three ******, with Henriques and Oliver Davies departing for ducks.
That left NSW 4-118 at the end of the 19th over and they never quite recovered.
A 50-run stand between Konstas and Hayden Kerr for the eighth wicket raised NSW hopes of chasing down the formidable Queensland total.
But when Liam Guthrie snared Kerr for 14, NSW were 8-233 at the start of the 38th over.
Queensland missed out on securing a bonus point in wrapping up the victory.

Chuck Schumer Has Mind-Blowing Response to Trump Gutting Government
Chuck Schumer Has Mind-Blowing Response to Trump Gutting Government
Democrats apparently aren’t going to use the upcoming spending fight to take a stand against Donald Trump’s attempts to dismantle the federal government.
During a press conference Tuesday, Senate ********* Leader Chuck Schumer was asked whether the Democrats intended to withhold their support from an upcoming government spending bill that would keep the government open past March 14.
“Look, here’s the bottom line: The Republicans are already shutting down good chunks of the government,” Schumer said. “Democrats don’t want to shut down, but it’s in Republicans hands, it’s up to them.”
Schumer seems to think that any way the cookie crumbles, Trump and the Republicans will chart their own course with government spending—a particularly disturbing attitude for the head of the opposition party.
This seems like a significant reversal from the Democrats. Just two weeks ago, House ********* Leader Hakeem Jeffries promised that Democrats would fight Trump’s agenda in the legislature, in the courts, and even “in the streets.”
And he kept up that energy the following week, pledging that his party would use the upcoming spending fight to try and put a stop to Trump’s ******** funding freeze.
“I have made clear to House Republican leadership that any effort to steal taxpayer money from the American people, end Medicaid as we know it or defund programs important to everyday Americans, as contemplated by the ******** White House Office of Management and Budget order, must be choked off in the upcoming government funding bill, if not sooner,” Jeffries wrote Monday in a letter to his colleagues.
Other Democrats appeared to get on board with this idea. “I never support a shutdown, but I can see where it could happen in this situation. It’s an extreme situation,” said Senate ********* Whip ***** Durbin, according to The Hill.
But by the end of the week, Jeffries appeared to have backed off his threat to play hardball with Republicans.*
“I’m trying to figure out what leverage we actually have. What leverage do we have?” Jeffries said Friday. “They control the House, the Senate, and the presidency. It’s their government! What leverage do we have?”
“We are going to try to find bipartisan common ground on any issue. We will work with anyone in this town to get things done for the American people,” Jeffries continued. “We have repeatedly made that clear. But Republicans have decided to go it alone.”
Now, Schumer’s not even pledging that Democrats will oppose Republicans’ plans—rather they will be complicit, so as not to cause the shutdown they have long worked to avert, and consequently forfeiting their only shot at leverage over Trump.
* This story originally misstated the day Jeffries made his comments about leverage.

Scientists Discover Two New Supernova Remnants in a Surprising Location
Scientists Discover Two New Supernova Remnants in a Surprising Location
Two mysterious light sources detected on the outskirts of the Large Magellanic Cloud have been identified as previously unknown supernova remnants. The discovery was made using the European Space Agency’s X-ray observatory, XMM-Newton after observations revealed unexpected X-ray emissions. Supernova remnants are formed when massive stars explode, creating shock waves that ionise and compress surrounding interstellar matter. The detection of these remnants in an area where supernovae are rarely found has raised new questions about the distribution of ionised gas in this dwarf galaxy.
Identification of J0624-6948 and J0614-7251
According to a study published in Astronomy & Astrophysics, the two supernova remnants, J0624-6948 and J0614-7251, were observed as distinct circular structures in visible-light imaging. The newly released images from ESA show these remnants in the lower-left portion of the Large Magellanic Cloud, with J0624-6948 appearing in orange and J0614-7251 in blue. As reported by space.com, previously identified supernova remnants in the galaxy were marked with yellow crosses. The study explains that for a supernova to leave behind a remnant, the explosion must occur in a region containing ionised gas, typically found in dense star-forming areas rather than in the outskirts of a galaxy. The brightness and size of the newly detected remnants align with other confirmed cases in the Large Magellanic Cloud.
Impact on Understanding of Galactic Structures
In an official statement ESA scientists noted that these findings suggest a higher concentration of ionised gas in the Large Magellanic Cloud than previously estimated. The research proposes that interactions between the Milky Way, the Small Magellanic Cloud, and the Large Magellanic Cloud could be influencing the movement and compression of interstellar material. It is suggested that gravitational forces between these galaxies may be altering gas distribution, leading to unexpected regions of star formation and supernova activity.

Charlotte Edwards wants to help England rebuild after Women’s Ashes drubbing
Charlotte Edwards wants to help England rebuild after Women’s Ashes drubbing
Respected as a leader and one of England’s finest cricketers of all time, Knight has not presided over an Ashes triumph in her five series as captain, albeit against an Australia team that is the strongest in the history of the women’s game.
Bar a drawn series against the Australians at home in 2023, England’s recent record in major events has been disappointing.
They were on the brink of an early exit at the 2022 World Cup before being overwhelmed in the final by Australia, missed out on the medals in the Commonwealth Games of the same year and have not reached a T20 World Cup final since 2018.
The nadir was this latest Ashes, where they were humiliated by Australia with seven defeats across three one-day internationals, three T20s and a one-off Test.
“It’s hugely disappointing,” said Edwards. “Hopefully this will be a line in the sand for the team and the ECB to have a look at where we’re going in the women’s game, because there are a lot of good things happening.
“That’s what makes it sad for someone who is involved in the system. There are a lot of good things happening within county and regional structure and it hasn’t necessarily been portrayed with the England team. That is a worry and something that needs to be looked at.”
England’s fitness was called into question by former spinner Alex Hartley following their group-stage exit at the T20 World Cup in October.
Although coach Lewis conceded Australia are “more athletic” than England, he suggested this was because of climatic and cultural differences between the two nations.
“If you do a comparison they are more athletic and they are fitter,” said Edwards.
“That is what we have to aspire to be like. Part of our jobs at county level is to support the players to be fitter, more athletic, so we can compete with Australia.”

Millcreek schools superintendent outlines plans for new alternative education program
Millcreek schools superintendent outlines plans for new alternative education program
Millcreek middle school and high school students needing emotional, behavioral or academic support may be enrolled in a new alternative education program in Millcreek beginning this fall.
Millcreek Township School District currently pays Erie’s Perseus House Charter School of Excellence to provide alternative education for Millcreek students. The district plans to launch its own alternative education program for the 2024-25 school year.
The goal is to provide quality alternative education for more Millcreek students at less cost. The district expects to operate its own program — for 10 to 12 middle school students and 10 to 12 high school students — for less than the approximately $200,000 that it spends each year for Perseus House services.
“We can do that and actually be able to save the district money while gaining more seats than we currently have,” schools Superintendent John Cavanagh told school directors Monday.
This is a photo of the former Ridgefield Elementary School at 3227 Highland Road in Millcreek, when it was offered for ***** or lease in 2014.
Program A, B, Cs
The alternative education program will be held at the former Ridgefield Elementary School at West 32nd Street and Highland Road.
Millcreek Township School District closed the school in 2013 but still owns it. The Sarah A. Reed Children’s Center leases space in the building.
Also in the building are a teacher, special education teacher, counselor and administrator overseeing Millcreek Township School District’s cyber education program. Those employees additionally will oversee the new alternative education program.
Two more teachers for the program would be shifted from positions at McDowell High School. Also needed will be a secretary, two educational assistants, a school security officer and possibly a nurse, Cavanagh said.
School board to vote
Millcreek Township school directors will vote on the proposed program on Feb. 24.
“Soft costs” for its launch requested by school director Mike Lindner will be provided before the vote, district administrators said. Linder questioned if any renovations will be required at the school and how meals will be provided for students, as well as potential one-time costs to launch the program.
Renovations will not be necessary, although classrooms may need to be arranged to suit the program, district CFO Aaron O’Toole said. Whiteboards also may be needed.
Meals most likely will be prepared at other district schools and taken to Ridgefield, where equipment will be available to warm them. Custodians already are employed at the school, O’Toole said.
What’s in a name? Maybe more money for the Millcreek Township School District

Don’t want to pay full price for a cutting-edge MacBook Pro or Mac mini? Apple’s now selling M4 refurbs that are more affordable, but still have a year’s warranty
Don’t want to pay full price for a cutting-edge MacBook Pro or Mac mini? Apple’s now selling M4 refurbs that are more affordable, but still have a year’s warranty
Apple is offering refurbished MacBook Pro and Mac mini M4 devices
The Macs are on its online store in the US, Canada, ***, and some other European countries
Discounts of up to 15% can be had, while still benefiting from a one-year warranty and optionally AppleCare
If you’ve been mulling a purchase of a MacBook Pro or Mac mini with the latest M4 chip inside, but hoping to benefit from a somewhat more affordable price tag than new, you’ll doubtless be interested to learn that Apple is now selling these devices refurbished.
MacRumors noticed that Apple is offering these Macs that pack an M4 SoC on its web store in the US, Canada, and the *** (and also some other European countries).
Those who are tempted to go this route can get asking prices which are (up to) 15% less compared to a brand-new MacBook Pro or Mac mini M4.
To pick an example at the cheaper end of the scale, at the time of writing, on Apple’s US store there’s a refurbished Mac mini M4 with 10-core CPU (plus 10-core GPU) that normally sells for $599, but has been knocked down to $509 – which represents bang-on a 15% discount.
Analysis: Money-saving but with more peace of mind
The example given there is a whole lot of computer (in a deliciously small form factor) for barely over $500. Of course, the drawback here is that these machines aren’t quite new, but they are as close as you’re going to get.
And while buying refurbished hardware might feel like something of a risk compared to a completely new device, you don’t get much more peace of mind than purchasing a Mac refurb directly from Apple. (Plus brand-new devices can go wrong, too).
Apple gives buyers a full year’s warranty on a refurbished device, and you’re free to pick up AppleCare to give the Mac further protection, should you wish. The company tells us that: “Refurbished devices are cleaned, inspected and tested, and come with genuine Apple replacement parts as needed.”
Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more.
Apple’s M4 Macs only debuted at the end of October 2024, so discounts on them have been rather limited thus far, as you might expect. A refurb from Apple could be a tempting option for the reasons just outlined, although for the more patient, there’s always ****** Friday later this year. Yes, it’s still a long way off, but on the other hand, the speed the months roll by these days, it’ll likely be looming before you know it.
Presumably, more M4 Macs will be available as refurbs directly from Apple before too long.
