  1. Bezos’ Blue Origin to layoff about 10% across its space, launch business Bezos’ Blue Origin to layoff about 10% across its space, launch business A Blue Origin New Glenn rocket stands ready for its inaugural launch at the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Cape Canaveral, Florida, U.S., January 10, 2025. Joe Skipper | Reuters The CEO of Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin announced in an all-hands call on Thursday company-wide layoffs of “about 10 percent” of its employees, a sweeping readjustment as it aims to cut costs and ramp up rocket launches. The layoffs affect roughly 1,400 of the company’s nearly 14,000 employees — mostly concentrated in Florida, Texas and Washington — and comes as Blue Origin starts production of its giant New Glenn rocket, which had its first long-awaited debut launch last month. “There’s no easy way to communicate this,” Dave Limp told employees in the meeting, which was scheduled the night prior and lasted about 10 minutes. “There’s no question that we’ve had a lot of successes over the last few months.” “But that being said, when you look at the foundation of the company and what we need to get to over the next three to five years, we just came to the painful conclusion that we aren’t set up for the kind of success that we really wanted to have,” Limp said. Limp said the decision would help Blue Origin scale New Glenn manufacturing and increase the rocket’s launch cadence, two goals crucial to competing with Elon Musk’s SpaceX and its dominant Falcon 9. To do that, the company needs a culture that is “quick, nimble, decisive, and very focused on our customers,” said Limp, who was plucked by Bezos from Amazon’s customer-focused devices unit in late 2023 to lead Blue Origin. Limp has been tasked with streamlining Blue Origin’s many business units — from space stations to lunar landers for NASA — and pushing for greater focus on New Glenn, giving the company a fresh sense of urgency after years of development paralysis, multiple employees say. But some employees believe morale and the company’s culture has suffered amid Limp’s push for speed, two employees said, adding some staff are seeking jobs elsewhere regardless of who survives Thursday’s layoffs. 4. The Yellowjackets Are Back. Here’s Where We Left Off. The Yellowjackets Are Back. Here’s Where We Left Off. Season 2 of Showtime’s “Lord of the Flies”-inspired survival drama, “Yellowjackets,” ended with a shocking death in the present timeline and a cabin fire in the 1990s one. But now that nearly two years have passed, you may be a little fuzzy on the details. Who burned down the cabin? How did Natalie die? What was going on with Taissa? And wasn’t there something about eating a raw human heart? Here’s what to remember about where we left the members of the cannibal soccer team from hell. Season 3 premieres on Friday. Misty, accidental serial killer Back in the ’90s, in the ********* wilderness, Young Misty (Samantha Hanratty) had already demonstrated a dint for the psychotic in Season 1, when she smashed the plane’s emergency transmitter because she liked feeling essential. About midway through Season 2, she told her friend Crystal (Nuha Jes Izman) what she did, and Crystal was horrified. Misty threatened her, and Crystal backtracked — right off a cliff to her death. It wouldn’t be Misty’s last accidental kill. Shauna’s baby Tired and exhausted, Young Shauna (Sophie Nélisse) went into labor late in Season 2, but let’s be honest: This baby was never going to make it. Shauna was barely ingesting enough calories to sustain one person, let alone grow another. Her baby was stillborn. Shauna hallucinated that her son was born alive only to be eaten by her teammates. In reality, they haven’t become that savage. (Yet?) Shauna buried his body in a makeshift grave. She also beat Young Lottie (Courtney Eaton), who had become the leader of the group, to a pulp. Lottie let her do it, knowing Shauna needed someone to blame for her baby’s death. Poor good-hearted Javi After going missing for a few months, Travis’s little brother, Javi (Luciano Leroux), returned to the group midway through Season 2, alive but unable — or unwilling — to talk. It turned out he had been hiding in a cavern for at least some of that time. Back at the cabin, Lottie, whose authority owed largely to her increasingly intense visions and seemingly mystic connection to the forest, convinced the girls that the “wilderness” was “hungry” and required a sacrifice to ensure their survival. She came up with a ritual: They would all draw cards from a deck, and whoever drew the Queen of Hearts would become the next feast. Bad news for Young Natalie (Sophie Thatcher): Her number was up. Just as it looked like the end for her — Shauna, the team’s de facto butcher, held a hunting knife to her throat — Travis (Kevin Alves), knocked Shauna down and told Natalie to run. Natalie ran into Javi, who told her he knew a place she could hide that no one else knew about. As they ran across the frozen lake, the ice cracked, and Javi fell in. Natalie at first moved to save him, but Misty persuaded her to reconsider. “If you save him, the others will get you,” she said. Soon enough, Shauna was carving up poor Javi’s body. In his grief, Travis took a bite of Javi’s heart — raw! — before putting it in a pan to fry with the rest of the meat. Queen Natalie Lottie, who by now was feeling pretty bad, declared that she had never wanted to be in charge — “it” had chosen her, she said, whatever “it” was, because she “was the only one who knew how to listen.” A new Antler Queen was named: Natalie. Though Natalie didn’t believe in Lottie’s woo-woo, she certainly seemed to want the role. Natalie told Coach Ben (Steven Krueger), who was appalled by the girls’ cannibalism, to flee to Javi’s hiding place. He later witnessed Natalie’s coronation while sneaking around outside, gathering supplies. He appeared alarmed — and betrayed — by how readily she welcomed the devotion. Season 2 ended with the Yellowjackets’ precious cabin aflame in the freezing ********* winter. Coach Ben seemed a likely culprit: Not only had he made no secret of his disgust at the others’ decision to eat Javi; he was also the only person not with them when the cabin burned. He and the girls probably haven’t seen the last of each other. The Yellowjackets are in need of shelter now. And Natalie, who knows about Javi’s den, is in control. Shauna gets away with ******* (for now) Jumping ahead to the current timeline, we find Adult Shauna (Melanie Lynskey) more estranged than ever from her teenage daughter, Callie (Sarah Desjardins). There are many ways a mother might try to close that gap, but enlisting your child to help cover up a ******* is typically not one of them. And yet that’s just what happened after Callie, tipped off by a news report that her mother’s ex-lover, Adam (Peter Gadiot), had gone missing, found the charred remains of his ID in the grill after her parents held a cookout in the middle of November. Callie confronted her mother, forcing Shauna to admit to having killed Adam — the curly-haired artist who Shauna had believed was blackmailing the Yellowjackets. But — plot twist! — Callie learned that her father, Jeff (Warren Kole), was the blackmailer. Clearly, he wasn’t the oblivious victim she thought he was. Callie not only promised her mother not to reveal any of this; she also tried to help lead the police officers investigating Adam’s ******* down a red herring trail. Unfortunately when that backfired, another innocent man, Detective Kevyn Tan (Alex Wyndham), wound up dead — poisoned by Misty’s citizen detective friend (or boyfriend?) Walter (Elijah Wood). Walter sealed the deal by blackmailing the dead detective’s partner, Detective Matt Saracusa (John Reynolds), into posthumously framing Tan for Adam’s *******. Misty’s wide-eyed, mystery solving, not-quite boyfriend is just a little too good to be true: An unswervingly loyal multimillionaire — he got $6 million from a wrongful injury suit — he is every bit the schemer Misty (Christina Ricci) is. He even, at times, outwits her. There was clearly more to him than met the eye last season, though: The way he made the Adam problem disappear hardly seemed like the work of a first-time cleanup man. ‘The bad one’ Taissa’s wife of 15 years, Simone (Rukiya Bernard), moved out of their house and took their young son, Sammy (Aiden Stoxx), with her after Taissa (Tawny Cypress) started hallucinating and refused to get help. Shortly afterward, Taissa’s teenage flame, Van (Lauren Ambrose), re-entered her life. But there was a twist: Van had terminal ******* and had been given only months to live. It’s unclear how much Van knows about the disassociated personality of her former lover — the fugue-state version Sammy calls “the bad one.” That version of Taissa climbs trees, kills and beheads the family dog and who knows what else. Lottie cracks up (again) A flashback in the Season 2 premiere showed that after her traumatic experience in the wilderness, the already vision-afflicted teenage Lottie was nearly catatonic. Her parents took her to see a psychologist, and she was subsequently committed to a mental institution. There, she underwent electroconvulsive therapy treatments. A few decades later, we find the grown-up Lottie (Simone Kessell) leading Camp Green Pine. Her mission, she explained, was to turn suffering into strength. She exercised rigid control over the lives of the inhabitants even if the center was not, as she maintained, a cult. Although she had been free of her visions for years, they returned around the same time Natalie (Juliette Lewis), the crusty heart of the band of adult survivors, arrived at the camp, having been kidnapped by Lottie’s minions. The visions grew stronger throughout Season 2. By Episode 6, her fellow survivors had each made the pilgrimage to Lottie’s camp for various reasons — to rescue Natalie, to escape the police, to find answers — and things spiraled downward quickly. Lottie soon proposed another sacrifice — echoes of the Queen of Hearts ritual — arguing that the “wilderness” would help them survive their various travails if they made an offering. The other women agreed, while secretly plotting to call in a crisis team to come and recommit Lottie. When the time came for the ritual, Shauna drew the queen, though unbeknown to her, the others had since called off the crisis team. A chase ensued, and they all seemed crazed and ready to kill Shauna after all. Then Shauna’s daughter, Callie, showed up firing a gun, which wounded Lottie’s arm and brought the “hunt” to a halt. Natalie’s last dose Callie wasn’t the only one with a gun. A troubled young cult member named Lisa (Nicole Maines), whom Natalie had befriended at the camp, showed up with one, too. Seeing Lottie hurt and feeling betrayed, she threatened Natalie, prompting Misty to rush Lisa with a syringe — presumably filled with phenobarbital. That’s when Natalie, still haunted by her guilt over Javi from all those years before, suddenly stepped in front of Misty’s syringe, sacrificing herself to save Lisa. The season ended with Lottie on her way to a mental institution. 5. Top government ethics official fired by Trump speaks out Top government ethics official fired by Trump speaks out Days after his abrupt firing, the former director of the Office of Government Ethics said that although he was appointed by former President Biden, he was ready to work for the Trump administration. David Huitema said he was ready to work for any administration during his five-year term. “You kind of know going in that you’ll be serving across multiple administrations. So that was something I had considered,” said Huitema, who was nominated by Mr. Biden in September 2023 and sworn in on Dec. 16, 2024. “I was committed for the five years. I was committed to working in good faith with any administration, including this one. I thought we were off to a good start.” Former Director of Office of Government Ethics David Huitema screen grab of CBS News interview The Office of Government Ethics collects confidential and public financial disclosures, as well as ethics agreements and other forms from government officials, including the president and his Cabinet. The office’s purpose is to prevent conflicts of interest. Huitema said in an interview with CBS News that he was notified of his termination in a two-sentence email. The decision to oust him came two weeks after Mr. Trump removed at least 17 inspectors general from their roles as watchdogs. Huitema said that means his firing “doesn’t appear to be personal. I’m in good company.” “It really speaks, I think, an effort to, you know, kind of dismantle all of the institutions across the government that are set up, to serve as kind of an independent voice for integrity and for accountability,” Huitema said. After firing Huitema, Mr. Trump appointed Doug Collins, a Republican former member of Congress and current Department of Veterans Affairs secretary, to be the acting director of OGE. A group of eight former inspectors general fired filed a lawsuit Wednesday challenging their terminations. They argue their firings violated federal laws meant to prevent interference with their oversight duties. Huitema said he hasn’t decided if he’ll take legal action. “This is all still so new and sudden for me. I really have no idea what’s coming next, and I’m just starting to kind of turn my mind in that direction,” Huitema said. “So I’m, I’m really not sure.” Huitema recalled that the Office of Government Ethics was created by Congress after the Watergate scandal led to President Richard Nixon’s resignation. He said it was designed “to take a nonpartisan, non-politicized, matter-of-fact, by-the-book approach and be that voice of integrity where it’s needed.” “I do think it’s true that, you know, my removal from this position flies in the face of that vision of Congress,” Huitema said. Less than a year after Mr. Trump took office for his first term in 2017, Walter Shaub resigned as the head of OGE. Shaub said at the time that the presidential administration disregarded the “norms and ethical traditions of the executive branch that have made our ethics program the gold standard in the world.” Is Huitema worried that guardrails designed to protect the government from conflicts of interest are poised to fail? “I don’t know. And I guess I will be watching from the sidelines now,” Huitema said. Ed O’Keefe Ed O’Keefe is CBS News senior White House and political correspondent. 7. Valentine’s chocolate gets pricier as cocoa costs skyrocket – National Valentine’s chocolate gets pricier as cocoa costs skyrocket – National St. Valentine chocolates always seek to show how deep your love is. This year, it might just also show how deep your pockets are. With the price of cocoa beans setting unprecedented records on the commodities market, it will certainly turn the gift of love into a ******* financial commitment than it once was. Turns out that if love is reputed to be eternal, a low price for cocoa, the essential ingredient in chocolate, is not. No beans, no Valentine’s chocolate “The price increase of cocoa is absolutely spectacular, now for 2, 2 1/2 years,” said Philippe de Sellier, the head of both Leonidas and Belgian chocolate federation Choprabisco. When it stood at less than $2,000 a ton in the summer of 2022, it really took over early last year and peaked at well over $12,000 during the Christmas season and has been hovering around the $10,000 mark since. Story continues below advertisement “We are seeing unprecedented prices. They haven’t been this high for the last 50 years,” said Bart Van Besien, policy adviser of the Oxfam fair trade group. And the impact can be felt deep in chocolate gourmet country Belgium, where some of its 280 chocolate companies are left with a bleeding heart during Valentine’s week. 2:17 Halloween ‘shrinkflation’: How candy companies are adapting amid a cocoa crunch Dominque Persoone, owner of the famed Chocolate Line brand, still has plenty of beans to grind in his workshop in Bruges, but considers himself lucky, partly because he also has his own cocoa plantation in Mexico. Get weekly money news Get expert insights, Q&A on markets, housing, inflation, and personal finance information delivered to you every Saturday. “I have a lot of colleagues who are really in trouble, because the price is too high,” he said. “If you don’t have good contacts, they just don’t deliver anymore.” Some just close for Valentine, he said, turning one of the few financial bonanzas of the year into a forced vacation, hoping that Easter, with its eggs and bunnies, will bring better tidings. Many chocolatiers can’t go for the usual profit margins and turn all the extra costs of the cocoa prices over to their customers. Persoone said that his chocolates increased in price by 20% over the last year alone while de Selliers said that it depends very much from producer to producer. Story continues below advertisement The perfect chocolate storm The shock of cocoa prices pretty much is a metaphorical perfect storm, mixing climate, disease, commodity speculation, the plight of farmers and social ascendency around the world into one heady mix. “The drop that has happened now in production was directly linked to climate change,” said Van Besien, blaming changes in annual rain and drought patterns in western Africa that weakened the sensitive trees in key production areas. Persoone also said that the temperature differences between night and day increased in the small strip of land around the equator where the trees can thrive. Compounded by disease, it made sure too many harvests failed. At the same time across the world, populations lifted themselves out of poverty, middle classes expanded in places like China and the craving for the delicacy increased. 2:00 Mass cocoa shortage results in chocolate price hike Trending Now Mini Ritz crackers are being pulled off shelves in Canada. Here’s why Trolling Trump, Illinois governor declares Lake Michigan is now Lake Illinois And making matters worse, the years of slumping prices for the beans simply drove farmers off the land to look for a better future in the cities and pushed production further down. De Selliers said that “60 per cent of cocoa comes from Ivory Coast and Ghana and these farmers have to make a better living. It is extremely important.” Story continues below advertisement Persoone concurred: “We didn’t pay enough to have an honest price for the farmers.” So, strangely enough, low prices then, help cause high prices now. “The big irony in the cocoa industry is that farmers are now getting a fair price at the moment they are abandoning cocoa farming,” Van Besien said. “With the price they are getting right now, they could have invested in sustainable practices. They could have sent their children to school.” Chocolate love within reach Does it mean a premier box of chocolates is a guilty pleasure on Valentine’s Day? “Yeah, the guilt question …. It’s one that always works,” said Van Besien, the fair trade expert. “We could not survive if we would be thinking about these things all the time,” arguing that legislation should trump consumer emotions. “We should have laws that make buying cocoa below the cost of the production something ********. And it should not be up to the consumer to make this decision,” he said. Both de Selliers and Persoone hope that if the prices drop down again, they stay around the $5,000 or $6,000 mark. Story continues below advertisement “I really, really hope the money goes to the farmers,” Persoone said. So in the meantime, despite the price hikes, the chocolate shouldn’t leave too bitter a taste. “It’s a small luxury that most people still can afford,” Persoone said. “I hope it stays like this.” 3:01 Simply Delicious Valentine’s Day Recipe: Velvet Berry Kiss &copy 2025 The ********* Press Source link #Valentines #chocolate #pricier #cocoa #costs #skyrocket #National Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  9. The Lies of P Boss Fight With the Most Unpredictable Attack Pattern Was the Hardest to Balance, Needs to Be In DLC The Lies of P Boss Fight With the Most Unpredictable Attack Pattern Was the Hardest to Balance, Needs to Be In DLC With Lies of P: Overture finally revealed at yesterday’s State of Play, fans are already speculating about what new challenges await in the streets of Krat. While the prequel DLC promises new weapons, areas, and bosses to test our mettle against, there’s one particular type of encounter that Neowiz absolutely needs to nail. Even the developers needed therapy after designing this one. | Image Credit: Neowiz We’re talking, of course, about a boss fight that can match the sheer intensity and unpredictability of Laxasia the Complete—the notorious abbey dweller who had even the developers scratching their heads during the base game’s development. And if a certain developer interview is anything to go by, creating such an encounter is no small feat. The complete package: Balancing intensity and fairness When it comes to boss fights in Lies of P, few encounters have generated as much discussion as Laxasia. This isn’t your typical “dodge, hit twice, back off” kind of dance that most have grown accustomed to in Soulslikes. No, this mechanical masterpiece required something special from both the developers and players alike. Speaking to Game Rant in a post-launch interview back in December 2023, game director Jiwon Choi revealed just how challenging it was to get this fight right: Laxasia is the boss who must maintain tension and a comparable level of difficulty even after showcasing a noticeable change in her attack pattern. We invested a lot of time in designing her and it required a huge amount of feedback from testers to achieve it. The fascinating part? Even the development team couldn’t initially agree on how to balance her: In the early stage of making Laxasia, developers’ feedback was also split, so it was quite challenging to reflect and reconcile feedback to balance her to the level we wanted. With Overture taking us back to Krat’s glory days, the stage is perfectly set for another masterfully crafted boss encounter that pushes players to their limits while maintaining that delicate balance between challenge and fairness. After all, if there’s one thing Pinocchio’s twisted tale has taught us, it’s that the best lies—and the best boss fights—are the ones that keep you guessing until the very end. When State of Play becomes State of Dismay (trademark pending) Limits: None. New first-party game announcements: Also none. | Image Credit: PlayStation Speaking of keeping us guessing, yesterday’s State of Play left many viewers wondering if Sony has forgotten what made these showcases special in the first place. Sure, we got some exciting reveals like Lies of P: Overture and Tides of Annihilation, but where was the real meat and potatoes? The glaring absence of Marvel’s Wolverine—despite a leaked, fully-playable build literally making rounds on the internet—feels like a missed opportunity of adamantium proportions. And let’s not even get started on the radio silence surrounding Ghost of Yōtei. It’s almost as if Sony is keeping their biggest hitters in a vault somewhere, waiting for… well, we’re not quite sure what they’re waiting for. And while some optimistic souls were holding out hope for a new GTA 6 trailer (bless their hearts), we all know Rockstar isn’t about to debut their next masterpiece alongside announcements for indie platformers—no shade to Darwin’s Paradox, but come on. Besides, with Trump’s administration already shaking up the federal government with massive changes, who knows if that promised Fall 2025 release is even still on track? Have you played through Lies of P yet? Which boss fight do you think deserves the crown for most challenging encounter? And what kind of boss battles would you like to see in Overture? 12. Sam Kerr: Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor says striker’s apology ‘enough’ Sam Kerr: Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor says striker’s apology ‘enough’ Chelsea boss Sonia Bompastor says Sam Kerr’s apology “is enough” and that the club will not be taking any further disciplinary action following the player’s court case. On Tuesday, Kerr was found not guilty of causing racially aggravated harassment after calling a Metropolitan Police officer “stupid and white” following an incident in Twickenham on 30 January 2023. After the case, the 31-year-old Australia international apologised “for expressing myself poorly on what was a traumatic evening”. Bompastor said: “Sam made a statement, she apologised and I think that is enough. “Everyone can make mistakes and that’s what you learn from and that’s how you move forward. “What she was facing last week was hard enough for her so the only thing we want to do as a club is support her.” The trial heard Kerr and her partner Kristie Mewis had been out drinking when they were driven to Twickenham Police Station by a taxi driver who complained that they had refused to pay clean-up costs after Kerr was sick, and Mewis had smashed the vehicle’s rear window. Kerr said she and her partner had feared for their lives and in an expletive-laden exchange, accused one of the police officers of being “stupid and white”. The Chelsea striker, who made the comments to PC Stephen Lovell, did not deny using the words “stupid and white” but denied it amounted to a racial offence. Bompastor, who has been in charge at Chelsea since succeeding Emma Hayes in May, said she was “surprised” Kerr was involved in a court case. “Who she is doesn’t reflect what I heard in the court and what I was reading in the newspapers,” Bompastor added. 15. Maker creates Raspberry Pi-powered thermal fusion night vision goggles Maker creates Raspberry Pi-powered thermal fusion night vision goggles Night vision camera support on the Raspberry Pi is nothing new but this crazy thermal fusion night vision helmet put together by maker and developer Angus Logue is absolutely something different. Using our favorite SBC, he’s blown our expectations out of the water by merging different night vision technologies together to make a prototype of a night vision helmet typically used in the military. According to Logue, this project was put together as a tool to use for surveying nocturnal wildlife. It uses multiple video capturing methods and overlays them so you can see both a low light video feed with a thermal camera image overlayed on top at the same time. You don’t need to switch modes, just look around and reap the benefits of both cameras together. This project took a while to develop and was heavily influenced by his recent degree in industrial design. According to Logue, it took over 6 months to take the idea from concept to a physical product he could actually use and test. This process involved experimenting with different camera modules and developing a mounting system to secure the hardware to a helmet for practicality. Naturally, Logue used a Raspberry Pi to prototype the project. Image 1 of 3 (Image credit: Angus Logue) (Image credit: Angus Logue) (Image credit: Angus Logue) Its not explicitly clear as to which model of Raspberry Pi Logue has used. Looking at the build pictures, it looks like Logue has opted to use a Raspberry Pi 4 8GB model. We determined this by the position of the DSI connector on the left of the board (the Raspberry Pi 5 has a smaller PCIe connector there) and in a screenshot we can see that the system has 8GB of RAM. So the port placement and RAM identifies that a Pi 4 is the likely build platform. The project’s power supply which is mounted to the helmet so you don’t have to worry about cables while out and about using the goggles. The Pi is connected to a lowlight camera and features an infrared spotlight, the likely camera being a model of Raspberry Pi Noir. It also uses a 254 x 192 thermal imager to get the thermal effect. The rig is also designed with a few buttons that can be used to control settings for things like magnification. All of the hardware is housed inside 3D printed cases which are mounted to a helmet which makes it much easier to wear than if these were just goggles. Unfortunately, we don’t get a good look at the code but Logue did mention becoming familiar with Python during the creation of this project. If you want to get a closer look at this Raspberry Pi project, you can read more about it in greater detail over at Logue’s website and explore the post he shared to Reddit showing off the final design. 16. Arrests over small boat ‘people smuggling ring’ Arrests over small boat ‘people smuggling ring’ Matt Taylor BBC News, Leicester Bodycam footage shows moment small boats arrest made Six men have been arrested in the *** over their suspected involvement in a major people smuggling ring. They were apprehended on Wednesday following a joint investigation by the National Crime Agency (NCA) and Belgian police. The men – all Afghan nationals – were wanted in Belgium but were arrested by NCA officers at addresses in Leicester, Birmingham, Coventry and Essex after warrants were issued by the Belgian courts. According to the NCA, prosecutors say the men were allegedly involved in organising the transport of migrants from Afghanistan through Iran, Turkey and the Balkans into Western Europe and in moving migrants to the *** on small boats. National Crime Agency The six men were apprehended on Wednesday as part of coordinated action in Belgium and Italy The organised crime group had been running since 2022 and allegedly used social media platforms to communicate with migrants, the NCA said. The agency said migrants who had their asylum claims rejected in Belgium would be moved to the *** on small boats by the gang, who are suspected of transporting “significant numbers” in this way. Three of the men appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, with the other three due to appear at the same court on Thursday, all accused of people smuggling offences and for being members of a criminal organisation. National Crime Agency The NCA shared footage of one of the arrests being made in Leicester The NCA said officers had supported the Belgian investigation for about two years and had also worked with colleagues from Border Force and Immigration Enforcement to identify migrants and victims of the network who had been transported to the ***, conducting safeguarding checks. Deputy director Craig Turner said the men were allegedly part of “a dangerous and harmful” criminal network. He said: “The action we’ve taken shows that our work to disrupt and dismantle the gangs behind this criminality will not stop, and we will work with our international partners to help bring alleged perpetrators before the courts. “The threat posed by organised immigration crime is chronic and enduring, and we currently have 70 live investigations into the gangs involved in it.” Dame Angela Eagle, Minister for Border Security and Asylum, said the arrests demonstrate the commitment of teams working to tackle organised criminal gangs. She added that the government “will not hesitate to go after those who seek to undermine our border security”. 17. Increased Linux kernel timer frequency delivers big boost in AI workloads Increased Linux kernel timer frequency delivers big boost in AI workloads At the weekend, a Google engineer proposed raising the default Linux kernel timer frequency from 250 Hz to 1,000 Hz. Linux-centric tech site Phoronix has quickly stepped up and assessed what the change might mean to users with a suite of A/B testing. Spoiler alert: The most notable benefits were seen in AI LLM acceleration. Elsewhere, the differences might be considered within the margin of error of system benchmarking. System power consumption changes seen in the comparison were also minimal. Let’s recap the patch statement shared by Google engineer Qais Yousef on Sunday before looking at some measured impacts. As mentioned, Yousef’s main thrust was to propose that the current Linux kernel default to a timer frequency of 1,000Hz. The reasoning behind the proposal was that Linux users would benefit from improved responsiveness and faster workload completion in general. Yousef also thought that moving to 1,000 Hz would banish the 250 Hz-related issues with “scheduler decisions such as imprecise time slices, delayed load balance, delayed stats updates, and other related complications,” reported Phoronix. Toward the end of his patch notes, the engineer openly pondered over system power consumption, assuming that “the faster TICK might still result in higher power.” Phoronix’s beefy AMD Ryzen 9 9950X (16C/32T) system with 32GB RAM and a Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics card was the A/B Linux kernel timer frequency testing test bed. We see the first set of tests for processing performance in Llama LLMs, measured in tokens per second. This is probably the greatest showcase for the move to 1,000 Hz, with benefits from the change edging into double figures. However, the Nginx web server also showed double-figure percentage gains in requests handled per second, benefitting more with more connections. Other test results shared included image processing (250 Hz win), SQL database manipulation (evens), gaming (probably unnoticeable but consistent benefit for 1,000 Hz), browsing, rendering, and compiling (all even). Interestingly, the frequency difference precipitated a negligible change in power CPU consumption differences. We’ve shared some of the numbers and charts from Phoronix (above), but check out the original post for fuller details. Lastly, we must highlight that some popular Linux distributions already have a 1,000 Hz default kernel timer frequency. Ubuntu and SteamOS are already in the 1,000 Hz camp, for example. Nevertheless, changing the default would help bring the plethora of other distros in line. Get Tom’s Hardware’s best news and in-depth reviews, straight to your inbox. 18. How to Play Splitgate 2 Open Alpha Test on PS5, Xbox Series X|S & PC—Release Date Explained How to Play Splitgate 2 Open Alpha Test on PS5, Xbox Series X|S & PC—Release Date Explained Splitgate 2 continues to evolve through its upcoming PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC Open Alpha Test. 1047 Games has been working on the title for a while, and Splitgate 2 has already been through testing on PC. But it’s time for the real deal with the Crossplay Alpha test. The first Splitgate arrived when Halo Infinite was on the scene. It was a fast-paced sci-fi shooter with a unique portal mechanic, but player count figures show it never took off. However, Splitgate 2 is looking to establish itself as the first-person multiplayer shooter. Splitgate 2 has had an Early Access Alpha, but the February 2025 Sony State of Play declared a Crossplay PlayStation Alpha Test was inbound. Let’s show you what you need to do to lock and load. Splitgate 2 Open Alpha Test Release Date The Splitgate 2 Open Alpha Test goes live on February 27 across all applicable platforms. The Open Alpha test is looking to end February on a high. With live-service games around it receiving new seasons, Splitgate 2 is looking to make an immediate impact and show players what the future looks like. How to Play Splitgate 2 Open Alpha Test on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC Portals aplenty. Credit to 1047 Games You can download the Splitgate 2 Open Alpha Test for free and start playing it immediately once it’s live. Unlike the initial Splitgate 2 Alpha on Steam, there is no sign-up process for the Crossplay Open Alpha Test. It’s a free-to-play, open-to-all Alpha Test encouraging as many players as possible to get involved. It’s fairly standard, but here’s a run-through of what you need to do when the time comes: Wait for February 27. Decide which platform you want to play Splitgate 2 on. Go to the format’s storefront: PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, or Steam. Search for Splitgate 2. Check the game’s page for the Open Alpha Test. Download it. Once it’s ready, you can hop in and get cooking! The original Splitgate did have early issues with servers and capacity. However, I imagine 1047 Games has prepared for this possibility. You should also check out the Open Alpha Teaser Trailer on the Splitgate YouTube channel to witness a taste of the action and antics. What to Expect From Splitgate 2 Open Alpha Test Splitgate 2 Lead Writer Nate Dern has promised a variety of modes, maps, and the chance for players to actively influence the game’s release. A PlayStation Blog with Dern from February 12 is quite eye-opening. He’s excited for the new 8v8v8 Multi-Team Portal Warfare game mode, and it takes place on Splitgate’s biggest map yet. There’s also an array of “Unique abilities, equipment, perks, and more, all designed to keep each game exciting and fresh.” Dern also talks about the importance of player involvement and feedback: “We’ve been listening carefully to players from earlier playtests and we’ve already made improvements to our game mechanics and level design, especially portaling opportunities across our maps.” What do you think? Does Splitgate 2 look improved and flashy enough to compete with the likes of Call of Duty? Will you be giving the Open Alpha Test a go when it goes live? We interviewed Ian Proulx—co-founder and CEO at 1047 Games—back in August 2024 where Anti-Cheat, Esports, various updates, and much more were discussed about Splitgate 2. 20. 7 Years before Female Custodes, Warhammer 40k Was Accused of Falling Prey to Slaanesh with a Greedy Decision to Sideline Firstborn Space Marines 7 Years before Female Custodes, Warhammer 40k Was Accused of Falling Prey to Slaanesh with a Greedy Decision to Sideline Firstborn Space Marines There’s no denying the fact that the entire Warhammer 40k community was divided when the new 10th Edition Adeptus Custodes Codex dropped. One of the stories featured Custodian Calladayce Taurovalia Kesh, who was referred to by she/her pronouns. The Warhammer 40k franchise has always found itself under criticism. (Image via Focus Entertainment) The simple introduction of a female Custode led to some gamers accusing Workshop Games of breaking the lore and retconning things that shouldn’t have been done. However, this wasn’t the first time the franchise was under fire, as the introduction of Primaries Marines was even more controversial. Warhammer 40k community’s hate for Primaris Marines Primaris Marines changed everything in Warhammer 40k. (Image via Amazon) Back when Games Workshop first introduced us to Primaris Space Marines, the faction was considered to be one of the most important additions to the Warhammer 40k franchise. Unlike previous updates, which focused on changing existing models or adding new units to support old ones, the Primaris Marines featured a complete overhaul design. With Primaris Marines, Games Workshop decided to go with larger and more powerful models. Their arrival in the lore was considered to be a game-changing evolution as legendary Archmagos Belisarius Cawl secretly crafted them for an entire millennia before using them to defend the Imperium. Gamers were happy to see the addition of such a game-changing faction. However, long-time fans of the franchise immediately realized what the arrival of Primaris Marines meant for their old Firstborn Space Marine collections. The sheer scale difference with the new models made the old ones outdated. Gamers felt that Games Workshop was ruining the classic Firstborn Marines. As Primaris Marines weren’t just a new addition in the lore and seemed like a total replacement, gamers felt that they had to transition to them; otherwise, their armies would be wrecked on the battlefield. What’s worse is that Primaris Marines were also given exclusive access to brand-new weapons in the competitive scene. These included things such as bolt rifles and the lethal Redemptor Dreadnought. On the other hand, Firstborn units didn’t receive much in terms of additions. Seriously, investing in new miniatures just to keep competitive wasn’t a fun experience. Warhammer 40k‘s biggest project is on its way Henry Cavill at 2019 San Diego Comic-**** International. Considering the hype behind the Warhammer 40k franchise, Amazon MGM purchased the rights to the title and kickstarted an adaptation with Vertigo’s Natalie Viscuso and Jim Lee. What really excited fans was that actor Henry Cavill was also set to star and produce the series. Unfortunately, things didn’t move forward, and the IP remained dormant for two years. Many considered that the project would never hit the shelves as Games Workshop set a deadline to settle on creative guidelines with Amazon. However, recent reports from Deadline have confirmed that the adaptation is finally on its way. According to the outlet, the Warhammer 40k series has hit the development stage, and while there’s still not a showrunner, sources suggest that a mini writers room has been put together to craft the story. Earlier, it wasn’t clear that Amazon’s adaptation would be a series or a movie adaptation of the Warhammer 40k franchise. However, it now looks like the first project in the pipeline from the studio will indeed be a TV series. With that said, are you excited about the Warhammer 40k TV series? 21. Trump wants the Department of Education to be closed ‘immediately.’ Here’s what shutting it down would mean. Trump wants the Department of Education to be closed ‘immediately.’ Here’s what shutting it down would mean. Linda McMahon, Trump’s education secretary pick, is appearing before Congress for her confirmation hearing on Thursday. It comes amid statements from Trump that he’d like to dismantle the Department of Education. The department facilitates the federal grant and student-loan system, along with civil rights enforcement. Imagine you’re interviewing for a new role as head of a department, and part of the job description is to shut the division down. That’s what appears to be happening to Linda McMahon, President Donald Trump‘s pick for education secretary. Her role would lead the department that oversees schools, collects student data, and manages the federal student aid system, but even before she appears before lawmakers on Thursday for her confirmation hearing, Trump has said he aims to shut down the department altogether. “I told Linda, ‘Linda, I hope you do a great job and put yourself out of a job.’ I want her to put herself out of a job,” Trump told reporters on February 4. Trump reiterated to reporters on February 12 that he wants the Department of Education to be closed “immediately,” adding that the department “is a big **** job.” When announcing McMahon as his education secretary pick in November, Trump posted on Truth Social that one of his goals for her was to “send Education BACK TO THE STATES.” Trump and some GOP lawmakers have said that education can be managed at the local level, and a federal agency isn’t needed. Trump has also signed an executive order to “promote patriotic education” in public schools and eliminate ideologies that do not align with his politics. The Department of Education does not control classroom curriculum. Eliminating any federal agency requires approval from Congress, and while some Republican lawmakers have introduced legislation to get rid of the Department of Education, there has not yet been enough support to make that happen. Still, Trump has been working to reduce many federal agency functions over the past weeks by laying off staff and canceling the programs they oversee, as he recently did with the US Agency for International Development. Here are some of the Department of Education’s key responsibilities that would be impacted if the agency shuts down. Manages grants and student loans One of the Department of Education’s primary tasks is facilitating the $1.7 trillion student-loan portfolio. Over 40 million student-loan borrowers hold federal loans, and the department’s Federal Student Aid office works with student-loan servicers to manage borrowers’ loan repayment. FSA is also responsible for managing a range of student-loan repayment and relief programs, including the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program. It develops the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA form, for students each year and provides Pell Grants for low-income and middle-income college students. Additionally, the department manages grants for US public schools. Those include Title I funding, which gives funds to school districts in lower-income communities, along with funding for districts that teach students with disabilities. Some Republicans have previously suggested that the Treasury Department could facilitate these programs without the Education Department; shifting those responsibilities would be a significant undertaking, education policy experts have said. Collects data on student outcomes The Department of Education’s research arm collects data to monitor key student outcomes, including math and reading literacy scores. The most recent scores, collected through the National Assessment of Education Progress, found that kids are continuing to decline in reading literacy. Nat Malkus, a senior fellow and deputy director of education policy at the conservative think tank American Enterprise Institute, previously told *** that “if it weren’t for the Department of Education,” we wouldn’t even know where kids’ proficiency levels stand. The Institute of Education Sciences, a nonpartisan research arm within the department, funds research on education issues nationwide, including teacher quality, educational interventions, and classroom reform at all levels. State education agencies collect data under federal reporting requirements; the Education Department primarily keeps track of overall national trends at US schools and provides funding for data collection. Oversees schools and colleges The Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights is responsible for investigating discrimination complaints at K-12 schools and colleges. Most recently, the office resolved a complaint regarding anti-************ discrimination on a college campus. According to the department’s budget documents, the Office of Civil Rights received over 22,000 complaints in fiscal year 2024, largely on the topics of sex-based and disability-based discrimination. The office projected that it will receive over 23,000 complaints in fiscal year 2025. While it’s unclear how Trump would go about his plans to dismantle the Education Department, some Republican lawmakers have previously suggested shifting the department’s responsibilities to other federal agencies, like having the Treasury Department oversee grants and loans.
