Warning to residents in remote Pilbara as floods cause dangerous conditions in wake of Cyclone Zelia
Warning to residents in remote Pilbara as floods cause dangerous conditions in wake of Cyclone Zelia
Residents in the remote Pilbara have been airlifted to safety as record floods continue to cause dangerous conditions across the region.
Five people were airlifted from Yarrie Station to Marble Bar on Sunday due to rising floodwaters caused by Ex-Tropical Cyclone Zelia.
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services warned people to stay vigilant and to continue to monitor local warnings.
Record flood levels have been recorded in the De Grey River Catchment with the Coolenar Pool peaking at 9.02 metres on Sunday, exceeding the previous high mark recorded in March 2000.
A spokesperson from the department said that there had been 22 calls for assistance across the region on Sunday, with 126 calls for help being recorded since Friday, mostly due to fallen trees.
The spokesperson said the department had deployed more than 120 people to support local emergency staff and volunteers, with additional personnel due to arrive from South Australia and New South Wales.
“DFES staff and volunteers are continuing to support the community in responding to the impacts of ex-Tropical Cyclone Zelia. Crews are expected to be working to help Pilbara communities clean up for most of the week,” the spokesperson said.
“Major flooding in the Pilbara isn’t expected to subside until mid-week so conditions are still dangerous.
“Don’t attempt to drive through flooded roads, it is incredibly dangerous. Floods can take control of a four-wheel drive in just 30cm of flowing water.”
A flood watch and act is in place for people in the De Grey catchment including Marble Bar and Nullagine, as well as people in Sandy Desert and Warralong.
The category four system reached landfall earlier than expected on Friday afternoon, bringing heavy rain and destructive winds across the coast about 60 kilometres to the east of Port Hedland.
Wind gusts at the core of the cyclone measured around 270km/h, with peak wind gusts recorded at Port Hedland were about 120 km/h, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
Road closures are still in place and Great Northern Highway between Port Hedland and Roebuck turn off remains closed.
Mine sites across the Pilbara region were left with minimal damage from the cyclone, with most mines returning to operation on Sunday.
Rio Tinto announced that port, rail and mine operations had resumed on Sunday across all mines following the cyclone and that all staff had remained safe and unharmed.
A spokesperson from Fortescue said that all staff were safe and that minimal damage had been reported at their mines, but there were some temporary disruptions.
While a BHP announced that their sites had “fared better than expected” with no major damage.
“The collective experience of our teams in managing cyclones in the Pilbara meant we were well-prepared for the impact of the system.” the BHP spokesperson said.

Snubbed Matilda Gielnik steers Victory past Mariners
Snubbed Matilda Gielnik steers Victory past Mariners
Snubbed Matildas striker Emily Gielnik has scored a double for Melbourne Victory to deliver a 2-0 win over Central Coast and shoot to the top of the A-League Women golden boot race.
Elsewhere, Brisbane and Western United fought out a 0-0 draw at Perry Park.
Gielnik and teammate Alex Chidiac were overlooked for Australia’s SheBelieves Cup squad, while teenage midfielder Alana Murphy was a late call-up.
The powerful striker scored in the 10th minute, missed a penalty in the 44th minute and added a cheeky second in the opening minute of first-half stoppage time.
Chidiac and Murphy also controlled the midfield duel throughout the match at the Home of the Matildas in Bundoora.
“She was pretty determined,” coach Jeff Hopkins told AAP.
“One or two of the girls were.
“I thought Chids was excellent today as well – not a point to prove, but to say, ‘Hey, I’m still I’m still around, still alive and kicking’. So it was good.
“We had a good response from the whole team.”
In the process, Victory (32 points) leapfrogged Adelaide (31) into second place, while cutting Melbourne City’s lead to seven.
Only the leg of Victory goalkeeper Courtney Newbon stopped a close-range strike from ***** Pennock in the second minute.
Victory snatched the lead eight minutes later when a beautiful through ball from Murphy unleashed Gielnik to score.
Gielnik had her head in her hands in the 44th minute when she blasted a penalty over the bar after Jessica Seaman legged Rachel Lowe in the area.
But she had her second goal of the day, and ninth of the season, just two minutes later.
The ball bobbled out from a corner and Chidiac’s shot was headed towards goal before Gielnik instinctively flicked the ball home.
Mariner Annalise Rasmussen hit the crossbar just before half-time.
Mariners star Isabel Gomez returned from injury on the hour mark and immediately showed her class.
In the 65th minute, substitute Tiana Fuller clipped the post while Pennock forced a fine save from Newbon in the 73rd minute.
“Today, the first half we let ourselves down compared to our levels that we expect and we know the girls can deliver,” coach Emily Husband told AAP.
“But the reaction in the second half was the right one, unfortunately we just couldn’t come back from a 2-0 deficit.”
At Perry Park, Danielle Tan thought she had given the Roar an injury-time winner when she headed home, but she was offside.

Jurman fumes as Wanderers beat Macarthur 2-1 in ALM
Jurman fumes as Wanderers beat Macarthur 2-1 in ALM
Macarthur veteran Matt Jurman was left fuming after being on the receiving end of an ugly late tackle in the final play of his team’s 2-1 loss to Western Sydney.
Macarthur went 1-0 up in the 56th minute of Sunday’s A-League Men match following a calamitous own goal.
However, second-half strikes to Nicolas Milanovic and Gabriel Cleur earned the Wanderers all three points.
Jurman was cut down in brutal fashion in the 100th minute by Wanderers debutant Alaat Abdul-Rahman, who had only been on the field for a minute when he charged in and took down his opponent in a clumsy attempt to win the ball.
The referee blew full-time and handed Abdul-Rahman a yellow card, but an upset Jurman had to be held back by Wanderers players as he went in to remonstrate.
Other Macarthur players were also unhappy with the treatment dished out to their teammate, but tensions finally calmed down as an angry Jurman was led away.
Macarthur would have risen to third with a win, but the loss leaves them in seventh, equal on points with the eighth-placed Wanderers.
Both sides had plenty of good chances in a scoreless first half, but the final touch was lacking on most occasions.
The second half was an action-packed affair with plenty of drama.
Wanderers defender Jack Clisby appeared to suffer whiplash when he was cleaned up by Harry Sawyer just seconds after the break.
And Macarthur hit the lead in the 56th minute following a comical mix-up in the Wanderers defence, with Anthony Pantazopoulos and Gabriel Cleur getting in each other’s way as they attempted to clear a cross.
The pair could only watch on hopelessly as the ball rebounded off them and over the line, with Pantazopoulos “awarded” the own goal.
The Wanderers had VAR to thank for getting back on even terms in the 67th minute.
A beautiful dinked lob from Cleur that a running Milanovic finished off with a first-time volley was initially ruled offside.
But on review it was found that the back heel of Tomislav Uskok had kept Milanovic onside.
It was 2-1 to the Wanderers in the 77th minute when Cleur unleashed a long-range stunner that almost knocked Macarthur goalkeeper Filip Kurto unconscious.
Kurto’s head struck the upright in his diving attempt to stop Cleur’s curling strike, and he lay on the ground in pain before eventually getting to his feet and playing on.
There was even more drama in stoppage time.
Kealey Adamson had a chance to rescue a point for Macarthur when the ball fell kindly to him, but he fired his shot well wide of the target when a goal was there for the taking.
And a minute later Wanderers substitute Aydan Johnathan Hammond had a chance to seal victory when he surged forward with only the goalkeeper to beat, only to send his strike wide as well.

Manhunt continues after Knockholt Valentine’s Day shooting
Manhunt continues after Knockholt Valentine’s Day shooting
Police are investigating whether a suspect wanted after the fatal shooting of a woman outside a pub on Valentine’s Day may have entered the River Thames.
The woman, who was in her 40s, died at the scene of the attack, which happened at the Three Horseshoes on Main Road, Knockholt, in Kent, just after 19:00 GMT on Friday.
Police later recovered a vehicle that contained a gun on the Queen Elizabeth II bridge, which crosses the River Thames, near Dartford.
The force said it was not ruling out the possibility that the man may have entered the water after it received reports of a man “on the wrong side of the barrier”.
The woman has not been formally identified but police said her attacker was known to her.
BBC reporter Ben Schofield, at the crime scene in Knockholt on Sunday morning, said more information was “gradually becoming available” on what happened.
Villagers recalled hearing gunshots “ringing out” at around 19:00 GMT on Friday evening.
Police said they are only looking for one suspect and said they did not believe there was an ongoing risk to the public.

Galvin on song as Tigers pipped by Dogs in NRL trial
Galvin on song as Tigers pipped by Dogs in NRL trial
Lachlan Galvin has shown no early signs that he’ll fall victim to second-season syndrome as the five-eighth impressed in Wests Tigers’ pre-season challenge clash with Canterbury.
Galvin, with just 21 NRL games to his name, was the most experienced player picked by Tigers coach Benji Marshall for Sunday’s trial at Jubilee Oval as the Dogs won 20-14.
The 19-year-old Galvin produced the play of the match late in the first half when he shaped to kick on the last tackle and instead opted to run.
He flung the ball out wide to winger Alex Lobb, whose grubberkick back in-field was scooped up and put down by fullback Heath Mason.
Galvin’s kicking game also stood out on a blustery afternoon and the livewire No. 6 went agonisingly close to nudging two 40/20s before being subbed off by Marshall at halftime.
The teenage playmaker was one of few highlights for Tigers fans in 2024.
And the joint-venture’s long-suffering supporters will be hoping Galvin can strike up a combination with the club’s marquee recruit Jarome Luai, who was mobbed for autographs as he watched from the stands.
Luai and Galvin are expected to have their first run-out together in next Friday’s trial with Parramatta.
When Galvin went off at halftime the Tigers trailed 10-6, with Mason’s effort cancelled out by tries to Jack Todd and Ratu Rinakama.
Rinakama crossed again in the second half and the rangy winger looks to have all the physical attributes which could lead to a promising NRL career.
Tigers centre Solomona Faataape scored a double and looked in good nick in his first hit-out for the year.
Faataape was hit with a breach notice for returning to pre-season training out of shape.
Canterbury were able to put the Tigers away late on with Jonathan Sua’s try sealing the victory for a Dogs side laden with NSW Cup and Jersey Flegg players.

Couple believe law was broken in Nottingham abortion sign-off
Couple believe law was broken in Nottingham abortion sign-off
BBC
Carly Wesson and Carl Everson went through with an abortion but later found out there had been a mistake and nothing had been wrong with their unborn baby
A couple who went through with an abortion after being mistakenly told their unborn daughter had a serious genetic condition believe doctors did not follow the law.
Carly Wesson and Carl Everson terminated their pregnancy in 2019 after being advised by Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) NHS Trust that their daughter had Patau’s syndrome – which often results in miscarriage, stillbirth, or the baby dying shortly after birth – but she did not have it.
In order for an abortion to proceed, two doctors have to sign a legal document but the couple believe one of the doctors was not made aware of the circumstances of the termination.
Police are examining the case as part of a wider review of maternity failures at the trust, which said there was nothing to indicate the second doctor “did not have access to all relevant information”.
Ms Wesson, 43, and her partner Mr Everson, 47, were expecting their first child when in January 2019, a blood screening test indicated their baby had a high chance of having a chromosomal abnormality.
They were offered a further test, known as chorionic villus sampling (CVS), to check their baby’s health.
Two days later, the foetal care team at City Hospital in Nottingham told them the initial results indicated their daughter had a rare genetic condition called Patau’s Syndrome, which often results in miscarriage, stillbirth, or the baby dying shortly after birth.
Ms Wesson and Mr Everson nicknamed their daughter Ladybird
Ms Wesson and Mr Everson say they had a conversation shortly afterwards with a foetal care consultant.
They say they were told their baby would be left with severe care needs, and that it might not survive the pregnancy.
Results from a more detailed analysis of the sample were due back two weeks later. The couple asked if it might show a different outcome, but they say their consultant advised them it would not.
Based on the advice that their daughter had a fatal foetal abnormality, which would be incompatible with life, the couple decided to have an abortion.
Six weeks after, Ms Wesson and Mr Everson were called to a meeting at City Hospital where they were told the second test showed their unborn daughter had no chromosomal abnormality.
Regulations published in 1991 require the two doctors to agree to the termination on the same grounds, although the two-signature requirement does not apply in an emergency.
Further guidance issued by the British Medical Association in 2020 says the Abortion Act requires the signatures of two registered medical practitioners on a form “confirming that in their opinion, which is made in good faith, the terms of the Abortion Act have been satisfied”.
‘I’d still have my daughter’
Ms Wesson said when the couple decided to move forward with the termination at 14 weeks, their consultant “offered to end the [pregnancy] that day”.
“So there was no opportunity for them to speak to the other doctor, to consult anyone about the results. She offered us the medication,” she added.
The trust investigated Ms Wesson and Mr Everson’s case.
While it found a number of mistakes had contributed to the termination, the investigation did not question the circumstances surrounding the signing of the paperwork.
Mr Everson and Ms Wesson previously said they were left in an “impossible situation” when they were told of their daughter’s initial test result
“He [the second doctor] was never interviewed, investigated or spoken to, and yet he’s pivotal,” said Ms Wesson.
“If he’d actually acted as a fail-safe, if he had had the knowledge [about our case] that he should have, and then national guidelines were followed, he would have said ‘this termination should not be offered’ and I’d still have my daughter.”
Mr Everson added: “The second signature, critically, is on there but he did not date it.”
PA Media
The NHS trust – which runs the City Hospital – is the subject of a review which is taking in more than 2,000 cases dating back to 2012
Nottinghamshire Police is examining the case as part of Operation Perth, an investigation into maternity failures at the trust.
The force announced a criminal investigation in September 2023 following discussions with senior midwife Donna Ockenden, who is leading the independent inquiry into maternity services.
In November, the force said it had recently started to receive information from the Ockenden review team.
An investigation in 2012 by the healthcare watchdog – the Care Quality Commission (CQC) – found evidence that 14 NHS trusts were pre-signing abortion forms – whereby one doctor would sign the forms in anticipation of patients seeking a termination.
This breach of the Abortion Act allowed a second doctor to take an individual decision to allow a termination.
The Department of Health and Social Care subsequently published guidance saying it considered the pre-signing of forms, without subsequent consideration of any information relating to the woman, “to be incompatible with the requirements of the Abortion Act”.
NUH was not one of the organisations identified by the CQC investigation.
NHS
NUH chief executive Anthony May apologised to the couple
A spokesperson for the trust said “from the records, we can confirm that the second signature on the form was undertaken by an appropriate registered medical practitioner”.
“There is nothing to indicate that the second practitioner did not have access to all relevant information with which to provide their signature within the grounds of the Abortion Act,” they added.
Responding to the couple’s case, Anthony May, NUH chief executive, said: “I know that we failed Carly, Carl and their baby, Ladybird, in 2019, and for that I am truly sorry.
“While words will never change the outcome, I can assure them and other families that we have investigated and learnt from this tragic case.”
He added: “Our foetal medicine teams provide a specialist regional service to hundreds of women and families a year from across the East Midlands.
“For women and families using this service, there will be times when they are faced with making very difficult and long-lasting decisions.
“We strive to support them to do that in the most compassionate and professional manner and we always want to hear from families who don’t feel their experience matches that ambition.”
