At Trump’s White House, Musk’s tactics frustrate some senior officials, sources say
At Trump’s White House, Musk’s tactics frustrate some senior officials, sources say
By Alexandra Ulmer, Gram Slattery and Nandita Bose
(Reuters) -As tech billionaire Elon Musk expands his influence over more than a dozen U.S. federal agencies, frustration is growing among some top aides to President Donald Trump, who want more coordination from Musk’s team as he slashes the U.S. government, according to four people aware of the tensions.
Trump’s chief of staff, Susie Wiles, and her team have at times felt out of the loop as Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency seeks to fire thousands of federal workers while accessing sensitive data and disrupting operations, the four people said. Wiles and some of her top aides spoke to Musk recently about the issues, according to one of the sources.

See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories.
Speaking to reporters at the White House on Tuesday, Musk projected alignment between himself, his tight-knit group of DOGE staffers and Trump. But underlying tensions with some White House officials highlight potential difficulties for Trump in balancing his core team with Musk’s DOGE staff as they upend agencies in a sweeping restructuring that has challenged congressional authority and faced a series of lawsuits.
In the recent conversation, Wiles and her staff delivered a message to Musk: “We need to message all this. We need to be looped in,” according to the source familiar with the encounter. Reuters was not able to determine the specific date they spoke or what, if any, changes Musk made after that conversation. The source added that Trump himself continued to speak positively about Musk to donors and others.
Musk did not respond to a request for comment. The White House declined to comment. An official with knowledge of the matter pushed back at the sources’ description of tensions, saying initial “operational hiccups” had been smoothed out. Musk sends reports to Wiles at the end of each day and they speak by phone almost every day, the official said.
The official added that it was Musk’s idea to speak with reporters on Tuesday at the Oval Office with his four-year-old son by his side. “He showed up with his kid. We rolled with it,” the official said.
On Tuesday, Trump issued an executive order that expanded Musk’s power over the federal bureaucracy, requiring federal agencies to work with DOGE to make large workforce reductions and limit hiring. The order calls for DOGE to station a “team lead” at every government agency who will oversee all hiring decisions.
“This is a unified team,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters on Wednesday. “Elon Musk is serving at the pleasure of the president, just like everybody else on this team. He takes directives directly from the president of the United States.”
In a subsequent statement to Reuters on Friday after this story was published, Leavitt said: “This story is complete ********* from unknown sources who have no idea what they are talking about.”
At the Oval Office news conference, with Trump beside him, Musk defended his role as an unelected official who has been granted unprecedented authority by the Republican president to dismantle parts of the U.S. government. He told reporters he speaks to Trump nearly every day, saying his work is in the interest of the public and democracy.
“The people voted for major government reform, and that’s what people are going to get,” said Musk. “All of our actions are maximally transparent.”
DOGE, however, has operated in deep secrecy. It has provided almost no information on whom it employs, where it is operating or what actions it is taking inside government agencies. It posts little information about its work, providing only dollar figures for purported cuts in specific agencies and little concrete detail. It has stunned federal employees, sending its members into at least 15 agencies and gaining access to sensitive data. As a “special government employee,” Musk’s financial disclosure filings will not be made public, the White House has said.
One of the four sources said that Wiles was not upset with Musk’s efforts to dismantle government agencies and downsize the federal workforce, but rather with his approach. Wiles, one of the two managers of Trump’s 2024 election campaign, wants Musk and DOGE to keep her team informed and work in a more orderly fashion, said the source, who has direct knowledge of the matter.
“There is some frustration, but it’s overblown to say it’s a rift,” the source said.
The fourth source, an associate of high-ranking White House officials, described the friction as more serious and said Wiles’ subordinates had expressed discomfort over information that Musk released on his social media platform X before it had been vetted by senior White House staff. “They’re definitely finding things out on Twitter.”
CONCERN OVER EMAILS
One point of contention is a series of emails that Musk associates began sending out to federal employees, including a January 28 message offering two million federal workers financial incentives to quit. Wiles and her team did not sign off on some of those emails, according to one of the four sources and a separate, fifth, source close to Trump.
To be sure, many of Trump’s close allies and White House aides appear to revel in Musk’s uncompromising style of governance. But his backing is far from unanimous, according to Reuters interviews.
Musk, the world’s richest person, spent over a quarter of a billion dollars to help Trump win last year’s presidential election. After Trump’s November victory, Musk began to spend extended periods of time with Trump, who has called Musk “fantastic” and praised DOGE staffers as a group of “super geniuses.”
As chief of staff, Wiles is one of Washington’s top power brokers. Under her management, Trump’s latest presidential campaign was widely praised as his most disciplined to date. She has a reputation for being self-effacing, turning down an invitation from Trump to speak to the crowd on the night he won the election. Multiple White House officials said they’ve never heard her raise her voice. She is often spotted by Trump’s side while traveling on Air Force One. On a recent trip to California, when the cameras turned in her direction, she moved away.
Musk, meanwhile, is known for his intense, freewheeling approach to work and his enthusiasm for the limelight. He often posts dozens of times a day on his social media platform X, takes suggestions from site users and touts his propensity to work through the weekend.

ICE deports migrant gang member who illegally entered US 10 times and is wanted for *******
A migrant prison gang member who has entered the U.S. illegally 10 times and is wanted for ******* in Mexico has been deported, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced on Friday.
Humberto Romero Avila, 45, described as a “foreign fugitive” by ICE, first illegally entered the country in 2002 and is wanted in Mexico in connection with the fatal shooting of a 22-year-old man in 2007.
As well as breaking immigration laws, Avila has also been convicted of larceny, four DWIs and several other criminal offenses while illegally roaming the streets in the U.S., ICE said.
******** migrant Humberto Romero Avila, 45, is seen in ICE custody. He entered the U.S. illegally 10 times and is wanted for ******* in Mexico.
******** Immigrant Arrests Skyrocket Under Trump Ice Compared To Biden Levels Last Year: ‘Worst Of The Worst’
Avila, a member of the Paisas prison gang, was arrested in March 2024 following his latest felony arrest for DWI in Shelby County, Texas. ICE lodged an immigration detainer with the jail and forwarded his case for prosecution for ******** reentry.
While conducting routine background checks, ICE was then notified by the U.S. Embassy in Mexico that Avila was wanted for allegedly killing ******** national Geovany Uriel Prado Morales in Celaya, Guanajuato, ICE said.

Avila was convicted of ******** reentry on Jan. 28 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas and was sentenced to time served. The Bureau of Prisons transferred Avila into ICE custody on Jan. 31 and his prior order of removal was reinstated. He was then deported.
“For nearly a quarter of a century, this transnational gang member has blatantly disregarded our nation’s immigration and criminal laws, putting the life of every person he’s encountered in danger,” said Bret Bradford, the Houston field office director at ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO).

“On top of that, he’s accused of brutally gunning down an innocent 22-year-old man in Mexico in 2007. In the more than 30 years that I’ve worked in immigration enforcement, I’m not sure I’ve ever come across a more egregious offender or a better example of why immigration enforcement is so critical to maintaining public safety.”
Bradford said that U.S. streets are safer now that Avila has been ejected from the country.
Humberto Romero Avila first illegally entered the country in 2002 and is wanted in Mexico in connection with the fatal shooting of a 22-year-old man in 2007.
“He will no longer be free to reign terror on the general public and finally face justice for his alleged involvement in that heinous crime that took place 18 years ago,” Bradford said.
Avila first illegally entered the U.S. on March 22, 2002. He then jumped the border three more times that year and entered illegally for a fifth time in March 2005.
On each occasion, he was immediately apprehended by Border Patrol and voluntarily returned to Mexico the same day.
He illegally entered the U.S. for a sixth time on an unknown date and location and was not encountered until Aug. 3, 2012, at the Nacogdoches County Jail in Nacogdoches, a city in East Texas, following an arrest for driving under the influence.
He was deported later that month and entered illegally for a seventh time at an unknown date and location before he was jailed at Shelby County Jail in Center on Aug. 31, 2013, following another arrest for DWI as well as for larceny. ICE lodged an immigration detainer, and he was deported to Mexico in January 2014.
He illegally reentered again in February 2014 before being deported again that same month.
Avila illegally entered the U.S. for the ninth time in March 2014, and he was immediately picked up by the Border Patrol. He was then convicted of ******** entry and sentenced to 150 days incarceration.
The Bureau of Prisons transferred Romero into ICE custody in August 2014 following his release from prison, and he was again deported to Mexico.
People are seen boarding a U.S. military aircraft. Deportations have ramped up under the Trump administration.
The last time he illegally entered the U.S. is unknown, and the gang member wasn’t encountered again until March 22, 2024, following his arrest for a fourth DWI in Shelby County.
The Bureau of Prisons transferred Avila into ICE custody on Jan. 31 and his prior order of removal was reinstated.
Avila’s deportation comes amid a heavy crackdown on criminal ******** migrants under the Trump administration.
There were 11,791 interior ICE arrests from Jan. 20 to Feb. 8, compared to 4,969 during the same ******* in 2024, a 137% increase, according to Department of Homeland Security data obtained by Fox News Digital.

Indigenous All Stars: Young West Coast ruckman Coen Livingstone hospitalised after clash with Fremantle
Young West Coast ruckman Coen Livingstone has been cleared of any internal damage despite being hospitalised after playing for the Indigenous All Stars against Fremantle on Saturday.
Livingstone, 19, was taken to hospital as a precautionary after it was suspected he sustained internal and rib injuries while playing at Optus Stadium but he was later discharged.
The uncapped Eagle led the ruck against the All Stars against the more experienced and *******-bodied Docker Liam Reidy as well as Luke Jackson in front of more than 37,000 fans.
Livingstone held his own, finishing with 16 hit-outs and five touches as well as an impressive equal team-high six tackles in the clash and was backed up by Collingwood’s Ash Johnson and Port Adelaide’s Jeremy Finlayson.

The 19-year-old was one of three Eagles to play for the Indigenous All Stars, alongside premiership forward Liam Ryan and Tim Kelly.
Ryan kicked a goal from 10 touches as part of a star-studded forward line that included former teammate ******* Rioli.
Kelly also booted a goal from 13 disposals and had five clearances — the equal second most on the ground behind Jy Simpkin.
Livingstone was drafted to the Eagles through the Next Generation Academy in 2023 and had a strong first year at the club, playing 18 WAFL games where he averaged 10 hit-outs and eight disposals.
He was the joint winner of the Jack Clarke Medal as the WAFL colts fairest and best after averaging 16 disposals and 22 hit-outs in 14 games for Perth.

Is Sony beginning to coast? With PS5 sales up and game releases down, a new normal takes shape

personally I’d prefer to be placed in a game that retells the movies with all the original characters. I don’t need an extended universe where publishers push their own agenda’s into star wars.
My favourite star wars game ever was honestly episode 1 on PS1 because it was a straight up retelling but gave me the power of the Jedi to just go crazy and you know the gungan level didn’t hurt
But walking around tattotine marketplace was one of my favourite memories of the PS1
I get that Lego may have done this but I really don’t like Lego games I want real star wars not a kids version

Gen Xers are moving south to retirement hot spots — they don’t always love it when they get there
Gen Xers are moving south to retirement hot spots — they don’t always love it when they get there
Gen Xers are moving to retirement hot spots for better housing, lower prices, and warmer weather.
Census data shows a rise in Gen X movers in Florida, central Texas, north Georgia, and Tennessee.
Movers told *** they sought lower costs and taxes but faced high insurance and utility bills.
Gainfully employed Gen Xers are packing their bags for retirement hot spots.
They’re not foregoing the daily grind; instead, 45- to 60-year-olds are increasingly moving their families to warmer locales to take advantage of abundant housing, sunshine, and lower taxes.
Matt Hickman wanted to live somewhere with easy ocean access, good weather, and vibes that echoed his native California. In April 2020, the 46-year-old and his family moved to Orlando, which he said was more affordable than where they had been living in Colorado; a five-bedroom house cost around $90 a foot.
“I said, ‘You know what? If we move now in our forties, we can be set up so that we’ll have our house halfway paid off by the time we get close to retirement, and we’ll have beaten all the baby boomers who are going to move down to Florida and make it more expensive,'” Hickman said.
Have you recently moved to a new state or country? Please fill out this quick form.
Many in his generation seem to be on the same page. An analysis of Census data from 2020 to 2023, exclusively shared previously with *** by University of Virginia demographer Hamilton Lombard, shows that many counties in the south experienced large net increases in movers ages 45 to 54, particularly in Florida, central Texas, north Georgia, and Tennessee. Many New England, Missouri, and Idaho counties also experienced large increases. Meanwhile, much of California, the Midwest, and the Deep South — such as Louisiana and Mississippi — were in the red.
Some of the most popular counties for Gen Xers were those with older populations living in retirement communities — Gen Xers moved to “retirement destination” counties at a net rate of 5.1% between 2020 and 2023, compared to the US growth rate of 1.6%. Lombard suspected this trend was due to ample available housing in these areas and the generation’s rising savings.
In interviews with half a dozen Gen Xers who moved further south, most said they appreciated the lower cost of living, slower pace of life, and work opportunities. Still, some said they hated the weather, paid exorbitant insurance premiums, or didn’t enjoy the politics.
Hickman’s family liked Florida for a time. They landed in a predominantly 55-and-up community, visited a theme park often, and went to the beach six months of the year, but the humidity started to weigh on them. Plus, their homeowners’ insurance was $3,500 a year, property taxes soared, and they spent hundreds a month on utilities. As expenses — and bugs — piled up, they decided it was time for another change.
Hickman and his family landed in Atlanta, where they found a younger community along with cheaper utility and insurance bills.
Moving south to save money, but not everything is cheaper
Many movers told *** they moved south to save more in preparation for retirement, though some discovered prices are, in some cases, much higher.
****** Foster, a music promoter, lived all over the Eastern Seabord but moved to Seattle in 2015. With rising prices in his area and nine months of no sun a year, he wanted to move south.
After a recent divorce, Foster, 55, settled in Florida’s Bradenton-Sarasota area in 2022, where his cost of living fell dramatically. Though he now has a car in Florida, he estimates he’s saved about 30% compared to Seattle.
****** Foster recently moved from Washington to Florida.****** Foster
“I decided that Florida offered more opportunity, more freedom for me, more freedom to choose,” Foster said. “I spent a heck of a lot less on rent and all of my bills now than I did in Seattle.”
While he paid $3,000 monthly for a three-bedroom Seattle apartment, he pays about $2,000 in Florida for a four-bedroom house with a yard. His electricity bill is about 50% more in Florida, though his other utilities stayed consistent.
He said he enjoys earning $160,000 annually in a state with no individual income tax. Though he said he only has about $30,000 saved, as he hasn’t prioritized his retirement planning until recently, he believes he can continue saving more in Florida.
Escaping high taxes
Some movers said they left for Southern states with fewer taxes and better business environments.
Tracy Rockney, 57, worked in pharmaceutical regulatory affairs and built a consulting firm. The mother of three considered some southern states when deciding to leave Illinois but found Florida unappealing due to its humidity, hurricanes, and aging populations in the areas they considered. Her husband’s college roommate encouraged them to move to the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Tracy Rockney recently moved from Illinois to Texas.Tracy Rockney
“We would rather live a community where there’s a mix of races and cultures and ages,” Rockney said.
In 2020, she moved to a Dallas suburb with her retired husband and their youngest daughter to limit her tax liability — Texas has 0% state income tax — and to improve her daughter’s education quality. She sold the Illinois home for $795,000 and bought her current Texas home for about $1.1 million.
She’s found the healthcare options better in Texas, and she said prices are generally lower than Illinois’. Rockney sold her business in August 2022 and left her most recent role in late 2024.
She’s appreciated lower grocery prices, though her water bill skyrocketed. Landscaping costs are “really expensive,” for which she budgets between $5,000 and $10,000 annually.
She appreciates Texas‘ many outdoor activities, and her husband is the youngest person in his skydiving group. She said Texas’ business-friendly environment may help her when she starts up new entrepreneurial ventures.
“We kick ourselves and say we wish we’d done this move sooner,” Rockney said. “I wish I’d done it maybe when starting my business in 2015.”
Taking advantage of remote work
Some movers told *** they left the commotion of busier, more expensive cities for more rural areas while working remotely.
Elisa Suetake, 51, is hovering somewhere between retirement and work.
Suetake and her husband spent six years in San Jose, working in Silicon Valley. The couple would go to Hawaii three to four times a year but thought they could never work from there without getting cabin fever.
The pandemic, however, proved that wrong. In July 2021, they moved to Maui, tripling their property size for just $250,000 more than their San Jose home.
Their new property has a main house with five bedrooms, with an attached ADU, and there’s an additional smaller structure with three bedrooms. They plan on remodeling and renting out the smaller house while keeping the attached apartment for guests.
Suetake said that neither she nor her husband are planning on retiring traditionally — they’ll never stop working, but they will stop working for someone else.
“We’re never bored. We’re always learning something,” Suetake said. “It’s just that we don’t have a dedicated income stream from a company.”

It could be only a matter of days until the iPhone SE 4 arrives, and if it does it’s going to prompt a big question for iPhone buyers. Do you go for Apple’s new cheap iPhone, or the iPhone 16, the cheapest of its flagship line-up?
We’re already familiar with the iPhone 16. It launched back in September, adding a new design and colors, a much-improved A18 chip and boosts to its cameras. And with the Apple Intelligence features, it’s a strong pick for those looking for a flagship on a budget.
There have been plenty of iPhone SE 4 rumors (or it could be called the iPhone 16E), and by the sound of it it’s going to be a tuned-up iPhone 14, using new internal hardware to give it the power it needs to keep up with more recent phones, and a more modern-looking exterior that finally ditches the aging iPhone 8-based body that the last iPhone SE 2022 used.
Ahead of Apple’s February 19 launch event, we’re comparing the iPhone SE 4 vs iPhone 16 to see which one will be the better phone for which kinds of users. We might see big changes come to our best iPhones list, and perhaps our best cheap phones roundup if the price is right.
iPhone SE 4 vs iPhone 16: SpecsiPhone SE 4 vs iPhone 16: Rumored availability and price
If the iPhone SE 4 does launch at Apple’s next launch, slated for Wednesday February 19th, then we’d expect it to go up for pre-orders the following Friday (February 21st), and on ***** the Friday after that (Feb. 28th).
The fact that some retailers have already prepped (and accidentally published) store pages for the new iPhone suggests they think it will be up for purchase soon. The iPhone 16 went on ***** in September for $799 and the price remains the same, although there are plenty of iPhone 16 deals available.
The current iPhone SE 2022 starts at $430, which is almost half of the price of the basic $800 iPhone 16. But we’re bracing for the iPhone SE 4 to cost a bit more, perhaps $500 to match its main rival, the Google Pixel 8a.
For comparison, the older iPhone 14 that’s still for ***** costs $599.
iPhone SE 4 vs iPhone 16: Design and display
Thanks to a full specs leak and several rounds of leaked ****** models for the iPhone SE 4, we have a good idea of what it’s bringing to the table. Chief among those is a contemporary flat-sided, all-screen design, using the iPhone 14 as a template.
So prepare to say goodbye to big bezels and the Home button, and hello to Face ID. We probably won’t see newer iPhone features like the Action Button or Camera Control though, two things the iPhone 16 has.
Credit: @SonnyDickson on X
Both the iPhone SE 4 and iPhone 16 should share a 6.1-inch OLED screen with a 60Hz refresh rate, since Apple still keeps 120Hz displays exclusive to its Pro iPhones. The display on the SE 4 should keep the iPhone 14’s Face ID notch, rather than use a Dynamic Island like the iPhone 16.
Credit: Tom’s Guide
Since the iPhone 14 also came with an iPhone 14 Plus model, one source thinks an iPhone SE 4 Plus could be offered this time around. This would be an interesting option that would help Apple compete with larger budget phones like the OnePlus 13R. But I’m not putting my money on this.

The iPhone 16’s 48MP main and 12MP ultrawide cameras produce impressive photos, as does its 12MP front camera when it’s time for selfies. The iPhone SE 4 is tipped to get a 48MP main rear camera only, an improvement from the 12MP rear camera of the iPhone SE 2022 but a whole camera down from the iPhone 16.

We’re expecting the iPhone SE 4 to use the same 12MP front camera as other recent iPhones, a nice resolution boost from the 7MP of the iPhone SE 2022.
Our big hope is that Apple adds some of its software-based features from its premium iPhones to the iPhone SE 4, like night mode, Cinematic mode video and Photographic Styles.
iPhone SE 4 vs iPhone 16: Performance

The power of the iPhone SE 4 should be comparable to the iPhone 16 since it’s rumored to use the same chip and RAM: an A18 paired with 8GB RAM.
Compared to the A15 silicon and 4GB RAM in the iPhone SE 2022, that should be a big performance increase for the new SE model.
Storage options for the iPhone 16 vary from 128GB to 512GB. The SE could come with 64GB like the current model does, but it’s probably more likely that Apple will offer 128GB as default for this model. Perhaps Apple will offer a 256GB edition as an option for heavier users.
One subtle upgrade to the iPhone SE 4 that no other current iPhone would be able to boast is an Apple-made 5G modem, starting a three-year process of installing these modems into all of Apple’s cellular-enabled devices.
It’s a change that hopefully won’t be noticeable (or if it is, only in a positive way), but is significant for Apple’s ongoing phone development.
iPhone SE 4 vs iPhone 16: Battery and charging

The iPhone SE 4 should be getting a much larger battery than before, going from 2,018 mAh to 3,279 mAh of capacity. The iPhone 16’s 3,561 mAh battery will still be larger though, so it will likely offer superior battery life overall.
We could see the iPhone SE 4 power up via USB-C charging like the iPhone 16. That would be a big switch from the original Lightning port-sporting iPhone 14, but one that fits in with recent legislation mandating the use of USB-C.
We’d expect the iPhone SE 4 to support 20W wired charging and 15W MagSafe wireless charging like the iPhone 14, since it’s sharing so many other specs. Apple could offer it an extra upgrade by enabling 25W MagSafe 2 support, but perhaps it’ll keep that for the iPhone 16 series exclusively.
iPhone SE 4 vs iPhone 16: Software and Apple Intelligence
Credit: Tom’s Guide
iOS 18 comes pre-installed on the iPhone 16, and we’d expect the iPhone SE 4 to be the same. Both phones should get the same software support window too, which for iPhones normally means five generations of full updates.
The iPhone SE 4 should support Apple Intelligence. These AI features have been a major selling point for the iPhone 16, but it sounds like the iPhone SE 4 will get these features too.
Having a much cheaper entry point for Apple’s latest AI tools — such as Writing Tools, Photo Cleanup and Genmoji — could make it a very compelling mid-range phone.
iPhone SE 4 vs iPhone 16: Outlook
In fitting style with its lower price, iPhone SE 4 may not offer everything that the iPhone 16 does, like an ultrawide camera, Camera Control and larger storage options. But what is important is how much it looks set to share with its more expensive sibling.
The possibility of the iPhone SE 4 using the same display, chip, software and AI features and overall look as a phone almost twice as expensive could spell doom for the iPhone 16. A lot of users who like iPhones but couldn’t care less about having up-to-date features may find their next phone in the iPhone SE 4.
It could be an ideal phone for users who have held off of upgrading for a long time, even for those who currently use Androids for their better value.
We look forward to reviewing the iPhone SE 4 whenever it arrives. But perhaps the match-up to watch will be the SE 4 against the iPhone 16, to see which provides the best and most comprehensive entry into the Apple universe in 2025.

Man dies after being hit by multiple cars on Garden State Parkway; none stopped
Man dies after being hit by multiple cars on Garden State Parkway; none stopped
A New Jersey man was killed in a hit-and-run involving “multiple vehicles” Friday night, authorities said.
The incident occurred on the Garden State Parkway in Middletown Township, the New Jersey State Police said Saturday in a news release.
Officials say a Honda Pilot was traveling southbound in the parkway’s express lanes near milepost 112.8 just before 6 p.m. on Friday.
While the Honda was in motion, the front-seat passenger exited the vehicle onto the busy highway.
The passenger, later identified as 33-year-old Jose Cerda-Estevez, of Plainfield, was subsequently hit by “multiple unknown vehicles that failed to stop at the scene,” officials said.
Cerda-Estevez died from his injuries, police said.
It was not immediately clear why he exited the moving vehicle.
State police are now asking for the public’s assistance in the investigation.
Anyone who may have witnessed the vehicles hitting the victim or the events before or afterward is urged to contact the Troop “D” Holmdel Station Detective Bureau at 732-441-4500 ext. 7417.
Tips can be submitted anonymously, officials said.

Rubio Visits Israel as Trump Pushes Plan to Expel Palestinians From Gaza
Rubio Visits Israel as Trump Pushes Plan to Expel Palestinians From Gaza
Secretary of State Marco Rubio prepared for meetings on Sunday in Jerusalem as political chaos rippled across the Middle East over President Trump’s insistent proposals to seize the devastated Gaza Strip and force out its ************ residents.
The trip is Mr. Rubio’s first to the region as secretary of state, and comes as Israel and ****** negotiate to turn a tenuous cease-fire in Gaza into a permanent end to their war.
But Mr. Trump’s improbable vision for transforming Gaza into an American-owned “Riviera of the Middle East” has overshadowed that high-stakes discussion, and Mr. Rubio is sure to be pressed for more clarity about the plan during his visits to Israel, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
It is unclear whether Mr. Rubio will have any details to offer, however, and not only because Mr. Trump’s plan is as vague as it is contentious — it is unclear whether Mr. Rubio himself takes the president literally.
Mr. Rubio, a former Florida senator with a far more conventional worldview and style than the president, has more than once suggested that Mr. Trump’s idea is mainly a negotiating tactic meant to provoke Arab leaders into taking more responsibility for the Palestinians.
Mr. Trump surprised the world with his Gaza plan during a Feb. 4 news conference in Washington with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has since called it “a revolutionary, creative approach” that should be studied. Mr. Netanyahu has not explicitly endorsed the idea, which some Israeli officials consider impractical.
After Arab officials in the region immediately denounced it, Mr. Rubio suggested to reporters that Mr. Trump was merely trying to “get a reaction” and “stir” other nations into providing more assistance for postwar Gaza.
Since then, however, Mr. Trump has doubled down, telling reporters in the Oval Office on two other occasions and in a Fox News interview that he intends to move forward with the plan. On Friday, Mahmoud Abbas, who governs the West Bank as the president of the ************ Authority, said the ************ people “must remain” on their land.
The forced expulsion of Palestinians would be ethnic cleansing and a war crime, international law scholars say. More than 47,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli military retaliation in Gaza for a ******-led assault in October 2023 that killed 1,200 people. Most of the dead on both sides have been civilians.
Mr. Trump has said Jordan and Egypt should allow the ************ residents of Gaza to move to their countries. The idea has long been promoted by the Israeli right but flatly rejected by Arab and ************ leaders as well as past U.S. presidents of both parties. King Abdullah II of Jordan publicly rejected Mr. Trump’s proposal after a Wednesday meeting at the White House that was also attended by Mr. Rubio.
In a radio interview on Thursday, Mr. Rubio again spoke of Mr. Trump’s idea less as a concrete objective and more as kind of diplomatic stink bomb aimed at Arab nations.
“All these countries say how much they care about the Palestinians, but none of them want to take any Palestinians. None of them have a history of doing anything for Gaza in that matter,” Mr. Rubio said. “So the president says, all right, then this is what we’re going to do. We’ll take it on. We’ll have to move people around.”
“It’s the only plan out there right now,” he added. “Now, if someone has a better plan — and we hope they do — if the Arab countries have a better plan, then that’s great.”
Mr. Rubio suggested that any Arab proposal should address the mammoth task of reconstructing Gaza and deploying a multinational security force to fight remnants of ******.
“I can tell you that any plan that leaves ****** there is going to be a problem, because Israel is not going to tolerate it.” he said.
Mr. Rubio made no mention of months of work by the Biden administration, led by former Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken, to devise just such a plan. By the end of last year, Biden administration officials said they were getting close to a complex agreement that would bring Arab security forces and reconstruction funds to Gaza along with greater accountability to the ************ Authority, which President Joe Biden said should play a leading role in a postwar Gaza.
But any such plan is only possible once the war in Gaza comes to an end, and progress toward that depends on extending a cease-fire agreement that is set to end in March and that revolves around hostage-prisoner exchanges.
Mr. Rubio arrived in Israel the same day that ****** released three Israeli hostages, including a dual American citizen, in exchange for 369 ************ prisoners.
The Israeli and American governments had been pressuring ****** for days to release the hostages in hopes of sustaining the cease-fire first reached with the prodding of Biden and Trump aides in mid-January. Mr. Trump warned last Monday that Israel could cancel the agreement and that “all hell is going to break out” if ****** did not release all remaining hostages by noon on Saturday.
Mr. Rubio is on his second trip as secretary of state. He landed in Israel on Saturday night after spending a couple of days at the Munich Security Conference, and plans to fly to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates after meetings in Jerusalem. Mr. Rubio had planned to stop in Qatar earlier, but that was not on the announced schedule.
In Saudi Arabia, Mr. Rubio and two other top Trump aides plan to meet with Russian officials to discuss ending the war in Ukraine.
Mr. Rubio’s travels have attracted little public reaction in Israel, amid uncertainty about the secretary’s influence in comparison to Steve Witkoff, the president’s ******** envoy, and other advisers to Mr. Trump.
More broadly, Israeli government officials have warmly welcomed the Trump administration’s support for Israel. Mr. Netanyahu issued a statement on Tuesday that hailed “the president’s revolutionary vision for the future of Gaza.” He also credited Mr. Trump on Saturday with helping to ensure that the cease-fire remained intact through the weekend.
Still, it is unclear whether Mr. Netanyahu sees Mr. Trump’s plan to expel Gaza’s residents as a viable postwar strategy, even if the idea has been praised by Mr. Netanyahu’s far-right allies.
Mr. Netanyahu himself has avoided direct commentary on the premise of a U.S.-led building project in Gaza. Instead, the Israeli leadership seems more focused on a short-term goal — securing U.S. support for resuming the war if the cease-fire breaks down. Mr. Netanyahu has repeatedly said the war cannot end before ****** is defeated, but it will be harder to renew the fighting without Mr. Trump’s blessing.

Spider-Man 2 PC Review: PC Parker and Moddable Morales | COGconnected
Spider-Man 2 PC Review: PC Parker and Moddable Morales | COGconnected
SimpleSlave341d ago
You’re most def in the *********. Yeah. Aside from some boneheaded decisions, like having a mask on Willem Dafoe or shoehorning Venom in the Third one, those movies are far more enjoyable and honest than the new Marvel’s Spider-Man movies.
As for Tobey and Kristen, they both help ground the characters and make them more relatable and human than the new Disneyfied versions. It’s no secret as to why the best parts of the Disney Spider-Man movies are the ones with the characters from the original Trilogy; Dafoe, Tobey and Molina.
The original trilogy is indeed not perfect, but they still have heart and feel like the people behind them actually cared about the property whereas the new version feels like brain numbing been-there-done-that by the numbers Disney affair.
But to each their own.
