Savannah Ceric was excited to be going to her first Kylie concert on Saturday night, but little did she know, she would meet the Princess of Pop, onstage, in front of a 15,000-strong crowd. The 10-year-old girl from Noranda was with her family at RAC Arena for Kylie’s first show of her Tension Tour when the incredible moment unfolded. As Kylie performed her song Where the Wild Roses Grow, the 56-year-old icon picked Savannah out of the audience to gift her a white rose. After asking her name and telling the excited youngster that she was “lost in her eyes”, Kylie told security to get Savannah onstage for a hug. People of most racial and ethnic groups in the country are more likely to die from a heart-related issue than anything else. These statistics are startling, and if you’ve ever felt overwhelmed when researching what you can do to improve your heart health, you’re not alone. The good news? You don’t have to exercise for three hours a day and eat a diet entirely of fish and plant-based foods to keep your heart healthy. A few simple tweaks can go a long way. One of the easiest things you can do is to eliminate (or strictly limit) certain foods that are especially hard on your heart. Here, cardiologists and a nutritionist discuss three foods that you should consider cutting from your diet ASAP, and what to eat instead. Bacon Sorry, bacon enthusiasts, but all the experts we consulted agreed: If you want to take good care of your heart, you should save bacon for special occasions or eliminate it from your diet completely. “The way bacon is made can lead to adverse effects on heart health,” said Michelle Routhenstein, a preventive cardiology dietitian-nutritionist. “The curing process of bacon with sodium nitrite and its high sodium content can elevate blood pressure, while the compounds formed during cooking, like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and heterocyclic amines (HCAs), contribute to inflammation and damage to blood vessels, collectively increasing the risk of heart disease.” While bacon is the greatest offender, Dr. Saman Setareh-Shenas, a cardiologist at Cedars-Sinai, said that anyone who is eating with heart health in mind should be wary of processed meats in general, as well as red meats. (Although often considered white meat by culinary standards, pork is classified by Cleveland Clinic, Diabetes *** and other entities as red meat.) “People who eat diets rich in red meat, especially those with highly processed meats, have been associated with higher cardiovascular disease incidence and mortality, and obesity,” Setareh-Shenas said. “Ingredients used to make these foods include sodium and nitrites. Bacon is especially high in salt, saturated ****, cholesterol, heme iron, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and heterocyclic amines.” White Bread White bread — think Wonder Bread products, or similar white breads you might find in a bag at the grocery store — can be very bad for your heart, according to Routhenstein. “White bread, with its high glycemic index and lack of nutrients and fiber compared to whole-grain options, can lead to rapid blood sugar spikes, insulin resistance and weight gain, all of which increase the risk of heart disease and related complications,” she said. Dr. Daniel Luger, a preventive cardiologist at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, echoed this. “All refined carbohydrates increase your circulating glucose and triglyceride levels,” he said. “White bread is stripped of all of the healthy fiber and nutrients. What’s left is pure sugar.” If you’re wondering whether the baguettes that were made in your grocery store’s bakery department are any healthier than a bag of white Wonder Bread, you can take some cues from the ingredients label. Luger suggested looking for a “100% whole-grain” stamp on the package, as well as carefully reading the list of ingredients. “When looking at the ingredient list, you want to see the first ingredient being listed as whole (whole wheat, whole grain, etc.),” he said. “Ideally, when looking at the ingredient list you want to see only a handful of ingredients, and be able to recognize what those ingredients are.” French Fries In especially devastating news, french fries aren’t doing your heart any favors. “When food is fried, its nutritional content changes — the food loses water and takes up ****,” Setareh-Shenas explained. “Especially in the case of french fries, the oil is often reused, which leads to a loss of unsaturated fats and an increase in trans fats. French fries are also topped with lots of salt, and high sodium intake has been associated with high blood pressure and an increase in heart disease.” The regular consumption of fried food in general, he added, has been linked to an increase in coronary heart disease, high blood pressure and obesity. What Should You Eat Instead? You know what you shouldn’t be eating. But which foods can improve heart health? “I highly recommend increased consumption of legumes like lentils, chickpeas and beans,” Luger said. “Legumes are high in healthy fiber and help promote satiety, regulate bowel movements and feed healthy gut bacteria. Also, legumes can easily be made in bulk and are great for weekday meals.” If you’re able to squeeze flaxseeds and almonds into your diet, Routhenstein recommended doing that. “These foods contain lignans, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that support heart health by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation,” she said. “These compounds, alongside other nutrients such as vitamin E, alpha-linolenic acid and magnesium, contribute to improved cholesterol levels, blood pressure regulation and vascular health, collectively offering cardioprotective benefits.” When it comes to grains,choosing the right ones is key, according to Routhenstein. “Quinoa and whole-wheat bread are heart-healthy choices due to their rich nutrient profile, including fiber, phosphorus, zinc, plant-based protein and antioxidants, which collectively lower LDL cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease,” she said. “Their high fiber content regulates blood sugar levels and supports a healthy gut, contributing to overall heart health.” Keeping your heart healthy is a lifelong journey, and diet is only part of the picture. Routhenstein, Luger and Setareh-Shenas all emphasized the importance of regular exercise and avoiding habits like smoking. But skipping the bacon, white bread and french fries whenever possible is a great place to start. City says Columbia St remains closed in both directions between McBride Boulevard and Richmond St as crews continue to pump water from the buildings. Lucas was 102. Lucas died Monday at his home in Huntsville, Alabama, according to an obituary published Friday by Laughlin Service ******** Home in Huntsville. A ******** service has been set for March 1 on what would have been his 103rd birthday, ******** director Bryan Peek said Saturday. Lucas was director of the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville when the Challenger exploded on Jan. 28, 1986, just 73 seconds after liftoff from Cape Canaveral, Florida. It was the deadliest U.S. space flight disaster at that time. The explosion killed all seven crew members, including schoolteacher Christa McAuliffe, who had been tapped to become the first U.S. civilian to travel to space. Her inclusion on the flight meant thousands of schoolchildren across the country were watching the Challenger’s launch and witnessed the televised disaster in real time. A presidential commission charged with investigating the cause of the explosion pointed to the shuttle’s solid-fuel booster rockets as the likely culprit and criticized NASA managers for not taking safety concerns surrounding the rockets more seriously. The Marshall center had supervised development of the rockets. What is Alabama’s high school graduation rate? Lucas pushed back on the criticism, telling reporters a month after the explosion that it was too soon to pinpoint the cause of the explosion, adding, “I think it was a sound decision to launch.” But within months he had resigned, just days ahead of the release of a commission report blaming faulty design of the booster rockets. The explosion and resulting shakeup within NASA overshadowed what was an otherwise stellar career for Lucas, who was born and raised in rural western Tennessee and graduated from high school in 1939 as the class valedictorian. He earned a bachelor of science degree from Memphis State College, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and later earned a doctorate in metallurgy from Vanderbilt University. Lucas began his career in the guided missile development division of the U.S. Army’s Redstone Arsenal near Huntsville. Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Shane Patton has gone to ground since initially vowing to stay on after a union no-confidence vote was passed on Friday. Of the 14,571 Police Association members who took part in the online ballot, more than 12,600 – or 87 per cent – did not have confidence he could lead and manage Victoria Police in the future. That accounts for more than half of Victoria Police’s 21,715-strong workforce. Police Minister Anthony Carbines earlier this month said the government would likely not re-advertise Mr Patton’s role ahead of his contract expiring in mid-2025, as he had confidence in his leadership. But the minister backtracked from that position after Friday’s vote, declaring a process was underway. Neither he nor Premier Jacinta Allan were out to clarify the situation on Saturday or Sunday. Opposition police spokesman David Southwick said the government was “missing in action”. “Two days later, no premier, no police minister, they’re in witness protection,” he told reporters after a community safety rally in the bayside Melbourne suburb of Hampton on Sunday. “Where is the government? You’ve got Shane Patton turning up for work tomorrow only after he’s (been) given his marching orders on Friday. “No wonder we have a crime crisis.” Mr Southwick called for the police minister to be sacked, describing Mr Patton as the government’s “fall guy” for rising crime concerns that have led to a review of bail laws. “The government hold the purse strings, the government hold the power to change the laws,” Mr Southwick said. Going back centuries, local Buganda cultural superstition also protected the elegant fowl, which was seen as a symbol of wealth, good fortune and longevity. It was believed that if one killed a crane, its kith and kin would flock to the killer’s home, hold vigil and mourn by collectively honking until the person went mad or even died. “Such stories instilled fear, and cranes would be respected and revered and not killed,” Jimmy Muheebwa, a senior conservationist at Nature Uganda, a local non-governmental organisation (NGO), told the BBC. “We no longer harvest much as we used to do because these birds eat everything””, Source: Fausita Aritua, Source description: A maize farmer near Mbarara, Image: Fausita Aritua in a maize field But for farmers in western Uganda, where the cranes mostly hang out, that fear has dissipated and often it is only conservationists who appear to know about the ban on killing them. “I really don’t see any value in these birds because all they do is raid our plantations and eat our crops. We are worried about food security in this area,” Tom Mucunguzi, a maize farmer from a village near Mbarara city in Western Region, told the BBC. Another farmer near Mbarara, Fausita Aritua, agreed, saying when she goes to her maize plot she spends the whole day chasing away the cranes – and if she cannot get there, she tries to get someone else to stand guard. “We no longer harvest as much as we used to do because these birds eat everything,” she told the BBC. Also known as grey-crowned cranes, the birds are predominantly found in Uganda but are also in Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique, South Africa and Zimbabwe. They are non-migratory, but make local and seasonal movements depending on food resources, nest site availability and the weather. Standing at about 1m (3.2ft) tall, the waterfowl mostly live in wetland areas – riverbanks, around dams and open grassland – where they breed and feed on grass seeds, small toads, frogs, insects and other invertebrates. But with the increasing human population, the high demand for food is pushing farmers to cultivate in wetlands, leaving crested cranes with diminishing areas to call home. “In eastern Africa, the population has declined terribly by over 80% in the last 25 years,” Adalbert Ainomucunguzi, who leads the International Crane Foundation (ICF) in East Africa, told BBC. In the1970s, Uganda boasted a population of more than 100,000 crested cranes, but today that number has dwindled to a mere 10,000, according to Nature Uganda. This decline saw the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) put the crested crane on its red list of endangered bird species in 2012. Conservationists recommend farmers use scarecrows instead of poison [BBC] “Despite its serenity, beauty and popularity, the bird is facing a serious threat. It means that if no urgent measures are taken to reverse this trend, we might see the cranes pushed to extinction,” Dan Sseruge, a Ugandan ornithologist, told the BBC. Around Mbarara we found it was difficult to track down the birds – and only saw them early in the morning just after dawn. Conservationists say they used to be much easier to find in the landscape surrounding Mbarara. Dozens of cranes have in recent years been found dead after they were poisoned by rice and maize farmers in Lwengo district, in south-central Uganda. “One of the biggest threats against cranes is poisoning by the farmers. This is because the birds are causing a lot of crop damage,” Gilbert Tayebwa, a conservation officer at ICF, told BBC. Mr Tayebwa said he has been engaging farmers to use different deterrent methods like scarecrows to protect their crops from invading cranes. Farmers like Philip Ntare, from Lwengo, said the cranes were sometimes mistakenly poisoned after eating crops sprayed with agro-chemicals and other pesticides. “I just chase them, because I grew up knowing the crested crane is not supposed to be killed. But government should consider compensating farmers for crop damage,” he told the BBC. However, John Makombo, director of conservation at the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), said this was not possible. “It is one of those precious species that have freedom to go anywhere and so unfortunately the government is not liable for any damage done by the cranes,” he told the BBC. “It is a highly monogamous bird as it pairs once, for life. Without the protective cover of the wetlands, their chicks are more likely to be captured by eagles. Cranes are finding day by day that they are living in an increasingly hostile environment. “Sometimes breeding areas are flooded and nowadays some cranes are killed by electricity lines when flying,” Ms Kugonza told BBC. Their exceptional beauty has also put them at risk as people are increasingly capturing them to be pets, according to Mr Ainomucunguzi. But crested cranes, who can live for just over two decades, hardly ever breed in captivity as the birds are famously faithful. “It is a highly monogamous bird as it pairs once, for life. This means that if one of them is killed or domesticated, the likelihood of finding a new mating partner is almost zero,” said Mr Muheebwa. They attract a mate by dancing, bowing and jumping – and are often seen walking as couples or families. A pair will define their own territory and can be very aggressive to defend it. The crested crane’s faithful nature has also made it a target for use in traditional remedies [International Crane Foundation] Scientifically called Balearica regulorum gibbericeps, the cranes also have unique nesting patterns as they usually return to the same location annually, often laying between two and five eggs that are incubated by both sexes for anywhere between 28 and 31 days. Any destruction to these nesting areas impacts on these breeding patterns. Their monogamy has also attracted the unwelcome attention of local traditional healers, who claim that the parts of crested crane may bring faithfulness from a partner – or good luck. “Some people have been caught hunting cranes to take some of their body parts to witch doctors in a belief that they will get rich. Or, if you are a woman, your husband will never leave you,” Mr Tayebwa from ICF said. This is also something conservationists are trying to counter – as well as alerting people to the law protecting cranes. During the BBC’s visit to Mbarara it proved difficult to find crested cranes – except early in the morning [BBC] And in an effort to reverse declining numbers, the Ugandan government and conservationist groups are now rallying communities to restore wetlands. President Yoweri Museveni, who comes from the Western Region, has been urging encroachers to vacate wetland areas and, according to local media, has declared 2025 a year of wetland conservation. The ICF has also recruited custodians to monitor and ensure that the cranes’ breeding grounds are protected. Nature Uganda’s Mr Muheebwa said these efforts were slowly helping to stabilise the situation but crane numbers remained “very low”. For Mr Makombo, the UWA’s future emphasis is going to be on setting an example when it comes to the law. “We shall arrest and prosecute those who are poisoning the cranes,” he said. Middle-income households are saving more for retirement Middle-income households are saving more for retirement Listen and subscribe to Decoding Retirement on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you find your favorite podcasts. Despite all the talk of a retirement crisis in the US, there is some encouraging news: A significant share of middle-income households — those earning between $50,000 and $100,000 per year — are setting aside roughly 8% of their income for retirement, according to a Principal Real Life Retirement Journeys survey. With an employer match, that savings rate can rise to 12%, according to Jean Chatzky, host of the Her Money podcast, putting it within the 10% to 15% range that retirement experts typically recommend. “Would I like to see them get to 15%?” Chatzky asked in a recent episode of Decoding Retirement (listen below). “Absolutely. We know that if you can save 15% over a really long ******* of time — decades, your working career — then when you get to retirement and you combine your savings with Social Security, you will generally have enough to replace 75% to 80% of your pre-retirement income.” This embedded content is not available in your region. Overall, the trend is going in the right direction. This savings rate “is pretty good,” Chatzky said, especially in light of other studies that have found that some people save only a small percentage of their income, sometimes in the low single digits, and other individuals have less than $400 set aside for emergencies. “When we talk about a retirement savings crisis in this country … what that number says to me is that maybe things are actually turning around,” Chatzky said. But putting your money to work through compounding can make a big difference. When people reflect on their retirement savings, Chatzky said many say they wish they had started earlier. According to Chatzky, automatic enrollment and auto-escalation have made saving in 401(k) plans easier and significantly increased retirement savings. Automatic enrollment, which enrolls employees in their employer’s 401(k) plan unless they opt out, has significantly increased participation rates. That is the very, very best thing that you can do. If you can do more, then put money into your 401(k) or whatever account you have at work.” In the podcast, Chatzky also emphasized the importance of maximizing all available retirement savings accounts, including Roth accounts, traditional IRAs and 401(k)s, health savings accounts (HSA), nondeductible IRAs, 529 plans, and taxable accounts. However, they cite high expenses, low income, and debt repayment as the primary barriers preventing them from saving now. “They’re real challenges,” Chatzky said. Expenses have risen significantly in recent years due to inflation, and while inflation has moderated, prices remain higher than they were a few years ago, making everything from buying a home or car to grocery shopping more difficult. Additionally, while wages have increased, they haven’t kept pace with the cost of living for some workers. At the same time, consumer debt has been rising, with many people carrying holiday debt that they may not be able to pay off until well into 2025. We tap our cards and swipe our cards and dip our cards without thinking about it. We use one-click ordering on Amazon a little bit too easily, and as a result, our money is flowing through our fingers in a very, very quick way and we are not paying that much attention.” The way to turn this scenario around, she said, is by doing “backwards budgeting,” which she does in her FinanceFixx coaching program at HerMoney. “You look at where your money is going, and you break it down into categories and you ask yourself, ‘Where can I make some small but meaningful changes?'” Chatzky said. Doing this can free up a little cash each month that can be used, for instance, to pay down debt. And as part of this exercise, you might find you are spending much more than you thought on food. Chatzky said meal planning is one trick that can make a big difference in saving money on groceries. Subscriptions are also a big culprit. “The average household during the pandemic had 24 different subscriptions, and if you haven’t looked at them in a while, chances are pretty good that you’re not using at least some of them and could cancel them,” she said. “So pay a little bit of attention, make some changes, and that’ll start taking you in the right direction,” she said. And if you haven’t checked your credit score in a while and are carrying high-interest credit card debt, Chatzky said improving your score could help you secure lower interest rates. The case, Brogdon (Mills) v. Ford Motor Company, involved the deaths of Herman and Debra Mills, who died as a result of their injuries after their 2015 Ford F250 “Super Duty” truck rolled over and the roof crushed down on them in August 2022 in Decatur County, according to the news release. The Mills were founders of Mills Welding & Fabrication Services and retired in 2019, according to the release. The release says the Mills truck left the road, hit a culvert covered by tall grass, vaulted into the air, struck on its front and then flopped over. The roof collapsed into the passenger compartment, the release says. The release says Debra Mills died at the scene and Herman Mills died nine days later in a Tallahassee, Florida, hospital. The release says, “The roofs on all 1999-2016 “Super Duty” trucks are indisputably weak.” The release claims those trucks have a strength-to-weight rating (SWR) of 1.1 when the minimum SWR rating to get a “good” roof strength rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is 4.0. “Ford contended that the roofs on the 1999-2016 ‘Super Duty’ trucks are ‘absolutely safe’ and there was nothing wrong with them,” the release says. The release says, “Ford also contended, as it has for decades, that roof strength doesn’t matter — that there is no ‘causal relationship’ between roof strength and injuries in rollover wrecks.” The release also states, “That argument has been rejected by the federal government agency charged with automotive safety, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (“NHTSA”), and by the IIHS.” The lawsuit was filed May 23, 2023, by James E. “Dusty” Brogdon and his brothers Ronald B. “Rusty” Brogdon and Jason Mills, according to the release. The release says the case was filed in the Columbus Division of the Middle District of Georgia because James E. Brogdon lives in Harris County. The case was tried in the United States District Court, Middle District of Georgia, Columbus Division, before U.S. District Judge Clay Land.
