  2. Villach stabbing was Islamist attack, says minister Villach stabbing was Islamist attack, says minister A stabbing in Austria that killed a 14-year-old boy and wounded five others was an Islamist attack, the country’s interior minister has said. The attack took place on Saturday at Villach, a town near the border with Italy and Slovenia. A 23-year-old Syrian asylum seeker was detained at the scene. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner said the attack was linked to the Islamic State group and the suspect appeared to have been radicalised online. Authorities previously said he had a temporary residence permit and was waiting for a decision on his asylum application. Speaking at a news conference on Sunday, Karner said this was an “Islamist attack with IS links by an attacker who, according to the investigations so far, was obviously radicalised online, via the internet, within a very short space of time. “So those in a position of responsibility, the police, the authorities, must draw the necessary conclusions from that.” Source link #Villach #stabbing #Islamist #attack #minister Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  4. U.S., Ukraine could still secure ‘positive’ minerals deal, officials say U.S., Ukraine could still secure ‘positive’ minerals deal, officials say U.S. President Donald Trump speaks, as he signs an executive order in the Oval Office, at the White House in Washington, D.C., U.S. Feb. 14, 2025. Nathan Howard | Reuters U.S. President Donald Trump’s hopes of securing access to Ukraine’s rare earth minerals hit a wall Saturday after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy rejected the bid on the grounds that it was too focused on U.S. interests. Prospects of an economic pact in exchange for Washington’s support for the war-torn country have gained traction over recent days amid talk of a wider deal to end the war, but Zelenskyy said the offer tabled thus far did not provide any specific security guarantees for his country. “I didn’t let the ministers sign a relevant agreement because in my view it is not ready to protect us, our interest,” Zelenskyy told The Associated Press on Saturday in Munich. The U.S. had proposed taking ownership of 50% of Ukraine’s critical minerals, Reuters reported, citing three people familiar with the matter. Still, officials at Munich Security Conference have said there is scope to negotiate a deal that is palatable to both sides. U.S. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham on Saturday said such a deal could be a “game changer” in resolving the conflict and a “nightmare” for Russian President Vladimir Putin. “This minerals agreement between the United States and Ukraine is a game changer, because President Trump can go to the American people and say Ukraine is not a burden, it’s a benefit,” Graham said Saturday. “If this minerals agreement happens it’s a nightmare for Putin, because we have something to defend that we didn’t have before,” he added. Ukraine is home to vast deposits of precious minerals critical for manufacturing high-tech products. The Kyiv School of Economics estimates that the country hosts deposits of 20 out of the 50 critical raw materials, including titanium, lithium and zirconium. President Trump has said he wants $500 billion worth of such minerals from Ukraine to help reduce U.S. dependence on China, but Zelenskyy said any exploitation would need to be tied to security guarantees for Ukraine. Democratic Senator Chris Coons told CNBC Saturday that the deal could be a “positive” for both sides, provided it made security assurances for Kyiv. “If this is an investment opportunity where American companies and other companies from Europe would be involved in mining and processing, so that we can be independent of ******** sources of these strategic minerals — and if his helps deepen and strengthen our partnership to help ensure the security of Ukraine going forward … that would be a positive thing,” Coons said. He added, however, that there were some descriptions of the deal that are “quite different from that.” Source link #U.S #Ukraine #secure #positive #minerals #deal #officials Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

Mac McClung wins third straight Slam Dunk title at NBA All Star weekend Mac McClung wins third straight Slam Dunk title at NBA All Star weekend Mac McClung jumped over a car on his way to winning his third straight NBA Slam Dunk contest at the All Star weekend in San Francisco. The 26-year-old, who has played five minutes in one game of NBA action this season for the Orlando Magic, received perfect 50-point scores for his four dunks. In the first round, he jumped over a car that had been parked under the basket with a person holding the ball up through an open sun roof, finishing with a reverse dunk. His second dunk saw him jump over a standing man and turn in the air. McClung’s third perfect score involved him dunking a ball from a man spinning on a hoverboard, while at the same time dunking a second ball held by a man standing on a ladder. And the 6ft 2in McClung clinched the title by dunking over 6ft 11in Cleveland Cavaliers player Evan Mobley, who was stood on a small platform. “Truly, stuff like this doesn’t happen without standing on the shoulders of a lot of people,” McClung told **** after beating San Antonio Spurs’ Stephon Castle in the final round. “I had a lot of help. People were opening gyms to fit a car in. People were allowing me to use their car. I’m just really grateful right now.” McClung plays the majority of his basketball in the G League, the NBA’s developmental league, and was last season named its most valuable player. He has played just five NBA games in his career, for the Los Angeles Lakers, Chicago Bulls, Philadelphia 76ers and the Magic. 6. Years of military expansion lie in ruins Years of military expansion lie in ruins Mouldy half-finished food on bunk beds, discarded military uniforms and abandoned weapons – these are the remnants of an abrupt retreat from this base that once belonged to Iran and its affiliated groups in Syria. The scene tells a story of panic. The forces stationed here fled with little warning, leaving behind a decade-long presence that unravelled in mere weeks. Iran was Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s most critical ally for more than 10 years. It deployed military advisers, mobilised foreign militias, and invested heavily in Syria’s war. Its elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) built deep networks of underground bases, supplying arms and training to thousands of fighters. For Iran, this was also part of its “security belt” against Israel. We are near Khan Shaykhun town in Idlib province. Before Assad’s regime fell on 8 December, it was one of the key strategic locations for the IRGC and its allied groups. From the main road, the entrance is barely visible, hidden behind piles of sand and rocks. A watchtower on a hilltop, still painted in the colours of the Iranian flag, overlooks the base. This Iranian base was built deep inside rocky hills [BBC] A receipt notebook confirms the base’s name: The Position of Martyr Zahedi – named after Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a top IRGC commander who was assassinated in an alleged Israeli airstrike on Iran’s consulate in Syria on 1 April, 2024. The supplies recently ordered – we found receipts for chocolates, rice, cooking oil – suggest daily life continued here until the last moments. But now the base has new occupants – two armed Uyghur fighters from Hayaat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the Islamist militant group whose leader Ahmed al-Sharaa has become the new interim president of Syria. Forces left behind documents with sensitive information [BBC] The Uyghurs arrived suddenly in a military vehicle, asking for our media accreditation. “Iranians were here. They all fled,” one of them says, speaking in his mother tongue, a dialect of Turkish. “Whatever you see here is from them. Even these onions and the leftover foods.” Boxes full of fresh onions in the courtyard have now germinated. The base is a labyrinth of tunnels dug deep into white rocky hills. There are bunk beds in some rooms with no windows. The roof of one of the corridors is draped in fabric in the colours of the Iranian flag and there are a few Persian books on a rocky shelf. Forces had to leave in a rush, taking off their uniforms and fleeing [BBC] They left behind documents containing sensitive information. All in Persian, they have details of fighters’ personal information, military personnel codes, home addresses, spouses’ names and mobile phone numbers in Iran. From the names, it’s clear that several fighters in this base were from the Afghan brigade that was formed by Iran to fight in Syria. Sources linked to Iran-backed groups told BBC Persian that the base houses mainly Afghan forces accompanied by Iranian “military advisers” and their Iranian commanders. Tehran’s main justification for its military involvement in Syria was “to fight against jihadi groups” and to protect “Shia holy shrines” against radical Sunni militants. It created paramilitary groups of mainly Afghan, Pakistani and Iraqi fighters. Yet, when the final moment came, Iran was unprepared. Orders for retreat reached some bases at the very last moment. “Developments happened so fast,” a senior member of an Iran-backed Iraqi paramilitary group tells me. “The order was to just take your backpack and leave.” Multiple sources close to the IRGC told the BBC that most of the forces had to flee to Iraq, and some were ordered to go to Lebanon or Russian bases to be evacuated from Syria by the Russians. An HTS fighter, Mohammad al Rabbat, had witnessed the group’s advance from Idlib to Aleppo and Syria’s capital Damascus. Mohammad al-Rabbat witnessed his group’s advance from Idlib to Aleppo and Damascus [BBC] He says they thought their operation would take “about a year” and best, they’d “capture Aleppo in three to six months”. But to their surprise, they entered Aleppo in a matter of days. The regime’s rapid downfall was brought about by a chain of events after ******’s 7 October attack on Israel. That attack led to an escalation of Israeli air strikes against the IRGC and Iran-backed groups in Syria and a war against another key Iranian ally – the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, whose leader was killed in an air strike. This “situation of psychological collapse” for Iran and Hezbollah was central to their downfall, says 35-year-old fighter Rabbat. But the most crucial blow came from within: there was a rift between Assad and his Iran-linked allies, he says. “There was a complete breakdown of trust and military co-operation between them. IRGC-linked groups were blaming Assad of betrayal and believing that he is giving up their locations to Israel.” As we pass through Khan Shaykhun, we come across a street painted in the colours of the Iranian flag. It leads to a school building that was being used as an Iranian headquarters. A street in a part of Khan Shaykhun painted in Iranian flag colours [BBC] On the wall at the entrance of the toilets, slogans read: “Down with Israel” and “Down with the USA”. It was evident that these headquarters were also evacuated at short notice. We found documents classified as “highly sensitive”. Abdullah, 65, and his family are among the very few locals who stayed and lived here alongside the IRGC-led groups. He says this life was hard. His house is only a few metres away from the headquarters and in between, there are deep trenches with barbed wire. “Movement at night was prohibited,” he says. Abdullah says the presence of Iran-backed groups in the neighbourhood made life difficult [BBC] His neighbour’s home was turned into a military post. “They sat there with their guns pointing at the road, treating us all as suspects,” he recalls. Most of the fighters didn’t even speak Arabic, he says. “They were Afghans, Iranians, Hezbollah. But we referred to them all as Iranians because Iran was controlling them.” Abdullah’s wife Jourieh says she is happy that the “Iranian militias” have left, but still remembers the “stressful” moment before their withdrawal. She had thought they would be trapped in crossfire as Iran-backed groups were fortifying their positions and getting ready to fight, but then “they just vanished in a few hours”. “This was an occupation. Iranian occupation,” says Abdo who, like others, has just returned here with his family after 10 years. His house had also become a military base. I observed this anger towards Iran and a softer attitude towards Russia in many conversations with Syrians. I asked Rabbat, the HTS fighter, why this was. “Russians were dropping bombs from the sky and other than that, they were in their bases while Iranians and their militias were on the ground interacting. People were feeling their presence, and many weren’t happy with it,” he explained. This feeling is reflected in Syria’s new rulers’ policy towards Iran. The new authorities have put a ban on Iranian nationals, alongside Israelis, entering Syria. But there is no such ban against Russians. Syria’s new leader has condemned Iran’s role in the country [BBC] Iran’s embassy, which was stormed by angry protesters after the fall of the regime, remains closed. The reaction of Iranian officials towards developments in Syria has been contradictory. While supreme leader Ali Khamenei called on “Syrian youths” to “resist” those who “have brought instability” to Syria, Iran’s foreign ministry has taken a more balanced view. It says the country “backs any government supported by the Syrian people”. In one of his first interviews, Syria’s new leader Sharaa described their victory over Assad as an “end of the Iranian project”. But he hasn’t ruled out having a “balanced” relationship with Tehran. For the moment, though, Iran is not welcome in Syria. After years of expanding its military presence, everything Tehran built is now in ruins, both on the battlefield and, it seems, in the eyes of a large part of Syria’s public. Back at the abandoned base, Iran’s military expansion was still under way even in the last days. Next to the camp were more tunnels under construction, apparently the beginnings of a field hospital. The cement on the walls was still wet and the paint fresh. But left behind now is evidence of a brief fight – a few bullet shells and a military uniform covered with blood. 10. Jacob Kiplimo breaks half marathon world record by 48 seconds Jacob Kiplimo breaks half marathon world record by 48 seconds Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo became the first person to run a half marathon below 57 minutes as he shattered the world record by 48 seconds in Barcelona. The 24-year-old ran 56 minutes and 42 seconds to eclipse Ethiopian Yomif Kejelcha’s previous world record of 57:30 set in Valencia in October. Kiplimo’s time is the best single improvement on the men’s world half-marathon record. “I am very excited about what I did today,” said the former 10,000m Olympic and World Championships bronze medallist. “I wanted to have a great race, but I didn’t expect to break the world record. “I started very strong in the first two kilometres to get away from my rivals. As the kilometres passed and I saw that I was going at record pace, I told myself that I had to maintain that pace no matter what it took.” He also set a world best of 39:47 for 15km during the World Athletics event, which was held in perfect conditions of 13ºC with no wind. 12. Honda’s officially done with merger talks—are two new companies about to rescue Nissan? Honda’s officially done with merger talks—are two new companies about to rescue Nissan? What seemed like a potential game-changer for the struggling Nissan has officially fallen apart. Less than two months after announcing plans to merge, Honda and Nissan have scrapped their deal, citing irreconcilable differences over governance. Honda, with a market value five times that of Nissan, wanted to make its rival a subsidiary rather than an equal partner. Nissan’s leadership, however, balked at losing autonomy, and the talks collapsed. The failed deal leaves Nissan in a precarious position. The automaker, once a dominant force in the global car market, is now reeling from declining sales in the U.S. and China. With a projected net loss for the fiscal year and ongoing cost-cutting measures—including thousands of job cuts—Nissan is in dire need of a new strategy. Nissan has struggled to gain traction in the EV market, facing stiff competition from Tesla, BYD, and legacy automakers that have been quicker to innovate. The company’s iconic Leaf, once a pioneer in electric vehicles, has fallen behind newer and more advanced rivals. Nissan’s latest electric models, such as the Ariya, have yet to achieve significant market penetration. The big question now is who, if anyone, will step in to help? Related: Ford CEO says factory jobs “at risk” if Trump repeals EV credits Enter Foxconn: A tech giant with auto ambitions One potential savior is Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Foxconn. Best known for assembling iPhones, the company has been making aggressive moves into the electric vehicle (EV) space. Foxconn chairman Young Liu recently confirmed that the company is open to collaborating with Nissan, though it has no interest in a full acquisition. 2025 Nissan Pathfinder Rock CreekNissan Foxconn has already been in discussions with Renault, Nissan’s longtime French partner, and has even floated the idea of purchasing Renault’s stake in Nissan. Such a move could give Foxconn a stronger foothold in the auto industry while providing Nissan with much-needed financial stability and manufacturing expertise. Story continues Related: These cars lost their manual transmissions in 2025 EVs are entirely new for Foxconn Foxconn’s interest makes strategic sense. The company has been expanding into contract EV manufacturing, aiming to replicate its success in electronics by building vehicles for established automakers. It has even introduced a lineup of prototype electric cars under its MIH Open Platform initiative. Foxconn’s manufacturing expertise and supply chain capabilities could help Nissan streamline production and reduce costs, making it more competitive in a rapidly evolving market. Foxconn electric vehicle Foxtron Model C and Model B on display during the Hon Hai (Foxconn) Tech Day 2024, in Taipei, Taiwan, on October 9, 2024.Anadolu/Getty Images Still, challenges remain. Skeptics question whether a tech giant with little traditional automotive experience is the right partner for a company in turmoil. Additionally, Foxconn’s track record in the auto industry is still unproven. Related: 2025 Toyota Supra vs BMW Z4: Which one would you buy? KKR eyes an investment opportunity U.S.-based private equity firm KKR & Co. is also considering an investment in Nissan, Bloomberg News reported. While details remain scarce, sources suggest that KKR is evaluating both equity and debt investment options. The firm has a long history of successful investments in Japan, and an injection of capital from KKR could provide Nissan with the financial flexibility it needs to navigate its current crisis. 2025 Nissan FrontierNissan KKR’s potential involvement signals growing interest from foreign investors in Japan’s auto industry. The firm has previously invested in Japanese automotive suppliers and has a track record of turning around struggling businesses. A KKR deal could offer Nissan a much-needed cash infusion while allowing it to maintain independence—something the Honda merger wouldn’t have permitted. Nissan’s declining fortunes: Can it reverse course? Even with potential lifelines from Foxconn or KKR, Nissan faces an uphill battle. The automaker’s sales have been steadily declining, and its brand image has suffered in the wake of leadership scandals and strategic missteps. The arrest of former CEO Carlos Ghosn in 2018 sent shockwaves through the company, leading to years of internal instability and strategic drift. While Nissan has attempted to chart a new course, the results have been mixed at best. Nissan Motor CEO Makoto Uchida (L) speaks as Honda Motor CEO Toshihiro Mibe (R) listens during a joint press conference on March 15, 2024 in Tokyo, Japan.Tomohiro Ohsumi/Getty Images The company has also struggled to differentiate itself in an increasingly crowded EV market. Tesla’s grip on global EV sales, while slipping, remains sizable, and ******** automakers like BYD have aggressively expanded their footprint. Meanwhile, legacy automakers such as General Motors and Volkswagen have rolled out ambitious EV plans, leaving Nissan in a precarious middle ground. Without a strong, innovative lineup of vehicles, the automaker risks falling further behind. Another challenge is Nissan’s reliance on aging models that have failed to excite consumers. The Nissan Altima and Sentra, once strong sellers, have lost ground to newer, more technologically advanced competitors. The brand’s SUVs, including the Rogue and Pathfinder, remain popular but lack the cutting-edge features and performance that consumers increasingly demand. Nissan’s luxury brand, Infiniti, has also struggled with stagnant sales and an identity crisis that has made it difficult to compete with ******* rivals. Related: Ford CEO trashes large EVs saying the problems are “unresolvable” What’s next for Nissan? With the Honda deal off the table, Nissan’s future remains uncertain. The company has already announced aggressive cost-cutting measures, including $2.6 billion in reductions and a 20% cut in top management positions. But cost-cutting alone won’t fix the deeper issues facing Nissan, those being stale product offerings, declining market share, and a lack of a clear strategic direction. 2024 Nissan AryaNissan Foxconn presents an intriguing partnership opportunity, particularly in the EV space, but it is unclear whether Nissan is willing to align itself with a tech company rather than a traditional automaker. Meanwhile, KKR’s potential investment could provide financial relief, but private equity firms typically seek significant control over their investments, which might not sit well with Nissan’s leadership. Related: Is the 2025 Honda CR-V worth $30,100? Final thoughts Investors appear cautiously optimistic. Despite the uncertainty, Nissan’s stock price remains 23% higher than when the Honda deal was first announced, suggesting that the market still sees potential for a turnaround. Whether that turnaround comes through a partnership with Foxconn, an investment from KKR, or another unexpected move remains to be seen. One thing is clear: Nissan can’t afford to stand still. The next few months will be critical as the automaker scrambles to secure a future without Honda’s backing. If Foxconn or KKR steps in, Nissan may yet find a way out of its current predicament. But if talks with these potential partners stall, the company’s survival could be in question. Love reading Autoblog? Loupos, the 2019 world champion, has had a succession of injuries through his career. He was laid up in hospital last September after crashing while competing in Japan. On Sunday, with defending champion Samual Grace injured and Tokyo Olympics gold medallist Logan Martin not competing, Loupos starred on the Gold Coast. He posted 96.67 on his opening run in the final to beat Chris James, who pushed him with a score of 94.33, while Keegan Pryor (89.33) was third. “It’s been a rough six months – not going to lie. Staring at the ceiling in a hospital in Japan was not fun for a month,” Loupos said. “Learning how to twist my body again and move around was a challenge, and now I’m standing on top of the podium at the national championships.” Loupos praised James for his performance, calling him “the people’s champ”. 15. Elon Musk wants the U.S. Treasury to be on a blockchain. That’s a terrible idea—take it from a big proponent of the technology Elon Musk wants the U.S. Treasury to be on a blockchain. That’s a terrible idea—take it from a big proponent of the technology A month ago, no one could have predicted this. Yet today, we are seriously discussing the U.S. Treasury moving all of its transactions onto a blockchain. As we know, this technology underpins cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, and the proposal is largely thanks to the increasing involvement of crypto advocate Elon Musk in the U.S. government’s affairs. A self-proclaimed government cost-cutter, the world’s richest man and newly unelected politician has been focusing his energies on the recently launched Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE for short. This is named after the eponymous memecoin for which Musk has become a cheerleader. In a nutshell, the new department’s job is to “rip the waste out of [America’s] $6.5 trillion budget,” at least according to Trump’s Commerce department nominee Howard Lutnick. And Musk believes a large proportion of this waste is coming from the misuse of Treasury funds. “Career Treasury officials are breaking the law every hour of every day by approving payments that are fraudulent or do not match the funding laws passed by Congress,” the Tesla CEO wrote on X, which he owns, earlier this month. “This needs to stop now!” When an X user asked whether the Treasury “should be put on the blockchain so this doesn’t happen,” Musk replied, “Yes!” His view is that the transparency and immutability of the blockchain technology—which ensures all transactions are visible for everyone to see for the rest of time—would eradicate this alleged fraud. And, in theory at least, he’s absolutely right. The problem is in the implementation. If anyone should support the idea of a U.S. Treasury on the blockchain, it’s me. I’m a huge proponent of this technology. Indeed, I left a very well-paid job at Goldman Sachs in 2015 to enter the blockchain space and haven’t looked back. I truly believe this technology, along with the endless financial opportunities afforded by the cryptocurrency space, can help enhance not only personal wealth, but also the efficiency and transparency of nation states. However, I don’t believe for one second that moving the U.S. Treasury onto the blockchain right now would be anything short of a disaster. My first concern is simply security. Blockchain is essentially an immutable ledger of transactions that anyone can see at any time. This means there’s no way to hide any blockchain-based transaction. This makes it very difficult to obfuscate fraudulent activity, but it would also mean that the most sensitive financial information, such as defense spending or foreign exchange operations, of the world’s most powerful nation would be available, at least in some form, for the whole world to see—and talented hackers could connect many dots. This presents an obvious national security risk. Story Continues At a time when new technologies like AI and escalating attacks from North Korean and other hackers are putting increasing pressure on cybersecurity systems, the last thing the U.S. needs is for all of its financial data to be available for the world to see. Now, data on the blockchain could be encrypted and only visible to those with clearance, but this kind of technology is in its early days, meaning it isn’t yet scalable or ready for large-scale adoption. Indeed, if Musk wants to put his focus and financial firepower anywhere, it should be here: blockchain innovation that supports both transparency and security. Yet, even if these security concerns could be ironed out with the use of encrypted data and privacy-preserving blockchains, for example, another problem is that the U.S. Treasury is a huge enterprise. In 2023, it distributed some $5.4 trillion in federal payments and collected a similar amount in federal revenue. In contrast, the entire market cap of the crypto industry currently stands at roughly $3.4 trillion, while Ethereum—one of the most battle-tested blockchains—handles about $322 billion. Meanwhile, Solana—the main challenger to Ethereum that has been buoyed by the launch of Trump memecoins $TRUMP and $MELANIA—has a market cap of less than $100 billion. And, indeed, the surge in trading volume after $TRUMP’s launch tested Solana to its limits. Does anyone truly believe that any one blockchain today could handle more than $5 trillion of Treasury assets? Some day, I fervently believe it will—but we’re not there yet. The sheer size of the Treasury and the nature of its systems mean it would take years to actually transition it on-chain. Treasury officials would also require upskilling to ensure they can use the blockchain in a safe and competent way, which would entail many new hires. And this would really be essential considering the cybersecurity upgrades required to avoid a major security incident. In short, even if the idea of the U.S. Treasury moving onto the blockchain passes muster, it will be a multi-year project. As a strong proponent of the transparency and immutability provided by blockchain technology, I truly hope to see a future where many government treasuries can move on-chain. But this isn’t something that can be rushed. Indeed, rushing it could have dire consequences. In the meantime, Musk will need to find another way to “rip the waste” out of the U.S. Treasury’s spending. What an incredible hockey game.” Canada coach Jon Cooper, who is a two-time Stanley Cup winner, added: “It wasn’t planned. “That wasn’t two coaches throwing guys over and saying ‘This is happening’ – none of that happened. That was as organic as it gets.” The game had the added context of top NHL players having not played one another on an international stage for 10 years. Traditionally the league’s best players skip the World Championships and the NHL did not send players to the 2018 or 2022 Winter Olympics. Cooper added: “It was probably I guess 10 years of no international hockey exhaled in a minute and a half.” The US confirmed their spot in the 4 Nations Face-Off final thanks to two goals from Jake Guentzel and another scored by Dylan Larkin, with Connor McDavid scoring for the hosts. 19. A-League Women: Perth Glory beat Wellington Phoenix 2-1 to keep top six hopes alive A-League Women: Perth Glory beat Wellington Phoenix 2-1 to keep top six hopes alive Perth Glory are back in the A-League Women’s winner’s circle after downing Wellington Phoenix 2-1 at the Sam Kerr Football Centre to keep their flickering finals hopes alive. Isobel Dalton and Olivia Fergusson traded first half goals as the sides went in level at the break, but an unfortunate own-goal by Tiana Jaber gifted Perth all three points. Victory allowed Perth to move up into ninth spot and within five points of the eighth-placed Wellington with seven games to play. While they will need to make up nine points on Central Coast Mariners in order to make the finals, the win will give Stephen Peters’ side plenty of confidence. In her last game of her comeback stint, Caitlin Doeglas almost put Perth ahead inside the opening 10 minutes when she found herself one-on-one but with the defence closing in, her lofted strike flew just over, before Kelli Brown saw her side-footed attempt saved. With Casey Dumont ruled out through Achilles soreness, Miranda Templeman started in goal for Perth and saved an early attempt from Manaia Elliott, while the action continued up the other end as Dalton hit the bar. Fergusson and Annalie Longo posed problems for the Glory in the final third as the latter teed up the former to shoot wide. However, it was the hosts who took the lead in the 31st minute when Dalton played a one-two with Sarah O’Donoghue on the edge of the box before sliding the ball into the bottom corner. Camera IconIt was a much-needed three points for the Glory. Credit: Paul Kane/Getty Images It was almost 2-0 not long after when Doeglas hit the bar, however the game would go into the break level when Longo fed Fergusson, who poked the ball past Templeman. Wellington almost stole a lead at half time when Elliott broke in behind, but the bar came to the Glory’s rescue, and shortly after the restart they almost scored again when Templeman gifted the Phoenix possession in the box, but they couldn’t convert. Perth worked their way into the half and grew in confidence after a slow reboot, began to gain the upper hand and they almost took the lead when Dalton’s corner landed on the goal-line, but the Phoenix managed to clear their lines. Camera IconOlivia Fergusson celebrates her goal. Perth almost put the game beyond doubt seven minutes late when the ball fell to Onyinyechi Zogg from a corner, but her effort hit the post. Wellington did not create many chance to snatch a point late, outside of a Fergusson header which flew past Templeman but failed to hit the target. Equinox Hotel plans to launch in-house doctor-led studies in a coming sleep lab. Park Hyatt New York’s Sleep Suites have AI-equipped beds for about $1,200 per night. Forget “I’ll sleep when I’m dead.” These days, it’s all about sleeping on vacation — with the help of AI beds, hotel science labs, and even crystals. Travelers are increasingly seeking a good night’s rest, so much so that one in four book slumber-enhancing treatments, while 70% of luxury guests reserve hotels with sleep amenities, Hilton said in a 2025 trends report. The idea may seem counterintuitive — why travel to a new destination just to snooze in? The answer: We’re all a bit shut-eye-deprived. In 2024, McKinsey called sleep the “second-highest health and wellness priority,” giving rise to biohacks like the “sleepy girl mocktail” and smart rings that track nightly hibernation patterns. For some, the quest for superior slumber commands no vacation days, even on vacation. So, to capitalize on the trend, luxury hotels are increasingly selling the promise of better rest. By scanning the bedside QR code, guests in the hotel’s Sleep Suites can adjust the bed’s firmness, fall asleep to meditative pulses synced to soothing sounds, or use the pulses to awaken gently. The cushions also shift support throughout the night according to how the user sleeps, mitigating pain, according to Bryte. Sleep Suite guests can use their phones to control the mattress’ functions.Brittany Chang/Business Insider You could buy one for $4,400 — or pay about $1,200 for a night in the Sleep Suite. It’s a $300 surcharge compared to Park Hyatt New York’s standard rooms. The high-tech accommodations saw an 89% occupancy rate in 2024, a 10% increase from the year prior, a spokesperson for the hotel told Business Insider. The mattresses are also available in the property’s newest apartment-like three-bedroom suite, which costs $50,000 a night. For those who prefer a clinical approach, the nearby Equinox Hotel is working with sleep scientist Matthew Walker to establish on-site “sleep lab” studies where guests can participate. 22. ‘No durable peace’ in Ukraine if Europe not in talks ‘No durable peace’ in Ukraine if Europe not in talks There can be “no durable peace” in Ukraine without the involvement of European nations in any talks to end the war with Russia, the business secretary has told the BBC. Jonathan Reynolds downplayed divisions between the US and its allies on resolving the conflict, after concerns the Trump administration was moving ahead with peace talks with Russia that would lock out European leaders. In response, European leaders, including Sir Keir Starmer, are due to hold an emergency summit next week, while US officials are due to meet Russian negotiators. Reynolds told the Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme the *** could act as a “bridge” between the US and the continent to strengthen relations. Reynolds also told the programme, hosted by Victoria Derbyshire, the *** and Europe had to respond to US demands for them to pay more towards their “collective defence” in the face of “greater threats”. He said the *** government would set out a road map to increase defence spending from 2.3% to 2.5%, but declined to offer a concrete timetable and he said any decision would take into account threats. Asked if the threat had just got ******* without the US, he said there was “no doubt” that it had. Reynolds said he thought the *** could “play a constructive role” between the US and Europe over Ukraine. “I’m not saying it’s going to be easy, there’s a very assertive agenda from the US.” But he argued Europe and Ukraine would have to be involved for any peace settlement to be lasting. “Ultimately [President Trump] is somebody who likes to win, and winning would not be rewarding a war of aggression,” Reynolds said. Appearing on the same programme, Conservative shadow foreign secretary Dame Priti Patel said it was “too premature to make assumptions” about the way Ukraine peace talks were heading. 23. LIV’s first purpose-built course will be in Adelaide and for Cameron Smith it further justifies his move LIV’s first purpose-built course will be in Adelaide and for Cameron Smith it further justifies his move Cameron Smith could have another six chances, at least, to get on top of the LIV podium in Adelaide and branded a confident contract extension in what remains a volatile golfing landscape as “pretty crazy”. The news LIV will be played in Adelaide until 2031 was enough to give Smith a broad smile, further validation of its status which he didn’t expect so early in the still fledgling tour’s existence, and after not bringing his best stuff as the team’s title defence fell flat. Smith hit fire early on Sunday, and was five-under after his opening seven holes. But chances of what would have been a miracle win fell apart as bogeys mounted. He finished 30th, 12-shots behind winner Joaquin Niemann, his Ripper GC team finished ninth of 13, Smith and Marc Leishman the only Australians to finish under par after a week which was loaded for the captain in particular, who felt rushed at the year’s second event. But the thought of coming back again and again, and to LIV’s “first ever golf course”, possibly as soon as 2028, helped ease the sting of disappointment. “That’s been the vision for a long time in a lot of places,” Smith said of the Adelaide venture, which will include a Greg Norman designed course in North Adelaide. “It’s nice we are the first one, it’s really cool. It shows the support we have here. I love Greg’s golf courses. “To have another six years, it’s pretty crazy, and so cool. They’ve got a really goof thing going, it’s exciting to keep coming down here. It’s getting better and better every year and will be better again next year.” The masses came to watch Smith in particular, Australia’s new pied piper when it comes to golf, and he did his best on Sunday not to disappoint. With a birdie and an eagle under his belt early, Smith walked from the tee on the 12th hole to the green wearing a Queensland State of Origin jersey presented to him earlier in the day. He whipped it off when he got to the putting surface and made another birdie to sign off the party hole with a first-pump, energised despite knowing the highs of 2024 were beyond his team. Smith suggested the move in the calendar, from April to February, had potentially come back to bite them. “I was saying to the boys the last couple of years we’ve come in fresh … been able to get here, get settled and get ready for a big week,” Smith said after closing with a two-under 70, his best round of the week. “This week it was all thrown at us quickly, coming off Riyadh, feeling jet-lagged. It definitely took a lot out of us. Everyone was kind of dragging a little bit. “As far as experience goes, it was amazing. As far as I played, not my best stuff. Thought I scrambled really well the first day to kind of stay in the tournament, and then the last couple of days actually did a lot of good stuff, and just couldn’t really keep on top of it, keep the momentum going. Smith though was adamant, despite two middling performances to open 2025, he feels “comfortable” with his game, knowing he has extra time to fine tune before the Masters in April as his next major target. “I feel comfortable. I think the wind was really tricky this week,” he said. “I hit a lot of good shots that ended up in some bad spots. And it was one of those weeks where you had to be really patient. “But I think, given the circumstances, and obviously being home, you’re always pushing. And perhaps that got us out of the tournament.” Source link #LIVs #purposebuilt #Adelaide #Cameron #Smith #justifies #move Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
  24. Long TSA security lines form at PDX, worrying weekend travelers Long TSA security lines form at PDX, worrying weekend travelers PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Travelers at Portland International Airport are worried about making their flights on time due to long lines at check-in on Friday. According to the FlyPDX Website, the current wait time for TSA check-in is 46 minutes for general and 15 minutes for precheck. KOIN 6 News reporter Ariel Salk spoke to people waiting in line who said that they had been waiting for quite some time. “We got here three hours early and we were not expecting this,” Cornelia Seigneur said. But other passengers said they were prepared for the long lines. “We just prepared ourselves just to make sure, because obviously the roads are a little hairy out there, so we just prepared ourselves and made sure we came in a little bit earlier,” Megan Armstrong said. Snow and ice ends: When does the melting begin? In the early afternoon, only two security checkpoints were open, leading to some of the backup, but the Port of Portland said it also had to do with low staffing due to the weather. Port of Portland recommends arriving two hours ahead of flights to ensure enough time to check-in. KOIN 6 has reached out to TSA for a comment but has not heard back yet. On top of long lines, several flights were canceled Friday morning and more than 100 were canceled on Thursday amid the winter blast the region experienced over the last few days. 25. What is PCIe 5.0? The latest component bandwidth standard explained What is PCIe 5.0? The latest component bandwidth standard explained If you’re considering building a new machine or upgrading your current gaming PC then you’ve likely heard the term PCIe 5.0 in relation to bandwidth, memory and components. But what does it actually mean? Furthermore, what does the current Peripheral Component Interconnect Express standard mean for computing in 2025? The PCIe 5.0 standard is now supported by the best graphics cards (such as the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080) thanks to their PCIe 5.0 x16 slot, the first GPUs to do so. In contrast, Gen 5.0 SSDs (which are some of the best M.2 SSDs) have been widely available for over three years, with leading manufacturers making the most of the greatly increased bandwidth available for effective futureproofing. Of course, to utilize PCIe 5.0 in your machine, you will need one of the best motherboards that supports the current standard. We recommend one of the best processors at the heart of your machine that’s compatible, such as the latest generations from AMD and Intel respectively (anything LGA 1700 and AM5 is supported). (Image credit: Christian Wiediger / Shutterstock) What does PCIe 5.0 mean? PCIe 5.0 is the latest bandwidth standard of Peripheral Component Interconnect Express for devices such as graphics cards, storage devices, and network expansions. There are different size slots depending on the device, ranging from x1, x4, x8, x16, and x32, depending on what needs to be installed into the system. Unlike PCIe 4.0, which has a maximum bandwidth of 64GB/s (or 16 GT/s) with bidirectional travel (twice as fast as PCIe 3.0), PCIe 5.0 is capable of 128GB/s (or 32 GT/s). In short, that means there’s far more data bandwidth available for your graphics card, SSD, and other compatible devices, resulting in much higher performance than the previous standard. Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more. (Image credit: daniiD / Shutterstock) When did PCIe 5.0 come out? PCIe 5.0 was first released in May 2019, but wasn’t widely adopted by hardware manufacturers until 2021 with the introduction of supported motherboards such as Intel’s LGA 1700 socket processors, like Alder Lake and Raptor Lake, before they were succeeded by LGA 1851. Similarly, AMD adopted PCIe 5.0 with its AM5 socket processors, the Ryzen 7000 series in 2022 and the Ryzen 9000 series afterwards. What are PCIe 5.0 Components? (Image credit: Future) While PCIe 5.0 compliant CPUs and motherboards have been out for a while now, the first PCIe 5.0 graphics card did not release until January 30, 2025 with the debut of the Nvidia RTX 5090. The 64 GB/s bidirectional bandwidth allows for a staggering 1.79 TB/sec in contrast to the former market leader RTX 4090’s 1,008 GB/sec. However, despite having been released more than five years ago, PCIe 5.0 has yet to be properly implemented by hardware manufacturers, but one area that it has excelled in components is through the extra storage speeds possible with M.2 SSDs. M.2 SSDs are one of the main computing components to directly benefit from the added bandwidth of the PCIe 5.0 standard found in today’s motherboards. Also known as Gen 5 NVMe SSDs, these solid state drives plug directly into the motherboard instead of the previous (and slower) SATA SSDs. This means a staggering bandwidth of up to 14,000 MB/s read speeds in contrast to Gen 4 NVMe SSDs with a maximum read speed of 8,000 MB/s (an increase of 75%). Some leading PCIe 5.0 M.2 SSDs include the Corsair MP700 Pro, Crucial T705, Seagate FireCuda 540, Sabrent Rocket 5, and the Lexar NM1090, among others. Despite the substantial leap in speeds, it’s debatable whether or not the bandwidth is even useful to PC gamers and for general computing tasks; we argued that you didn’t need one back in 2022, and little has changed more than three years later with regards to utilization. Do you need a PCIe 5.0 capable PC? (Image credit: Shutterstock / aslysun) While the current PCIe 5.0 standard allows for staggering bandwidths with today’s graphics cards and M.2 SSDs (among other components), you don’t strictly need a PCIe 5.0-capable machine in 2025 unless you’re building a bleeding edge machine. It’s situational; if you want an RTX 5090 or RTX 5080 to perform at its best then you’ll need compliant hardware. However, if you’re happy with an older graphics card (such as the RTX 40 series or AMD Radeon 7000 line) then there’s no real point in upgrading. Similarly, while there’s a 75% jump in PCIe 4.0 to PCIe 5.0 M.2 SSDs, the extra sequential performance with the read and write speeds (from a maximum of 8,000 MB/s up to 14,000 MB/s) does not have any notable impact on gaming performance at the moment. This could change in the future as games become more complex and hardware-intensive, but it isn’t the case in 2025, as many releases are still beholden to console parity, and that means the capped performance of the Xbox Series X|S and the PS5’s Gen 4.0 NVMe performance. What are the downsides of PCIe 5.0? (Image credit: Stas Malyarevsky / Shutterstock) The biggest downside of PCIe 5.0 is that it is not as widely supported as PCIe 4.0 was at the time it was introduced. It’s been over five years since PCIe 5.0 debuted and yet its impact in computing has been minimal, with superfast Gen 5 SSDs that do not offer much realistic real world performance, and only two leading graphics cards on the market to use the PCIe x16 port at the time of writing. Consequently, PCIe 5.0 compliant components are considerably more expensive than their PCIe 4.0 predecessors, and that’s by design. Getting your hands on an RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 is incredibly difficult, with Nvidia’s flagship graphics card costing a staggering $2,000 (up from the 4090’s $1,499 MSRP). Additionally, a new ATX 3.0 PSU (with the latest cables) out of the box is an additional expense, especially if it is fully modular. Gen 5.0 M.2 SSDs are also pricey, but offer leading performance for the money. Whether the upgrade is worth it for you or not is largely situational, but you’ll be paying more for a flagship NVMe capable of 14,000 MB/s up from the (usual) 7,500 MB/s standard seen from Gen 4.0 frontrunners like the Samsung 990 Pro and Kingston Fury Renegade, among others.
