World’s ‘first openly gay imam’ shot dead in South Africa
Pelican Press posted a topic in World News
World’s ‘first openly gay imam’ shot dead in South Africa World’s ‘first openly gay imam’ shot dead in South Africa Muhsin Hendricks, a pioneering figure dubbed the world’s first openly gay imam, has been shot dead in South Africa. The 57-year-old cleric ran a mosque in Cape Town intended as a safe haven for gay and other marginalised Muslims. He was killed on Saturday morning after the car in which he was travelling near the southern city of Gqeberha was ambushed. “Two unknown suspects with covered faces got out of the vehicle and started firing multiple shots at the vehicle,” police said in a statement. News of Hendricks’ death has sent shockwaves through the LGBTQ+ community and beyond, prompting an outpouring of tributes from across the globe. Julia Ehrt, executive director at the International Lesbian, Gay, *********, Trans and Intersex Association (LLGA), called on the authorities to thoroughly investigate “what we fear may be a hate crime”. “He supported and mentored so many people in South Africa and around the world in their journey to reconcile with their faith, and his life has been a testament to the healing that solidarity across communities can bring in everyone’s lives,” she said. Hendricks was killed after he had reportedly officiated at a lesbian wedding, though this has not been officially confirmed. The details of the attack emerged through security footage that was shared on social media. It shows a car pulling up and blocking the vehicle in which Hendricks was travelling as it was pulling away from the curb. According to police, the imam was in the back seat. The angle of CCTV footage reveals what happened from one side of the road – an assailant jumps out of a car, runs to the ambushed vehicle and shoots repeatedly through the back passenger window. Hendricks’ Al-Ghurbaah Foundation, which runs the Masjidul Ghurbaah mosque in the Wynberg suburb of Cape Town, confirmed he had died in a targeted attack on Saturday morning. But Abdulmugheeth Petersen, chair of the foundation’s board, appealed via a WhatsApp group for their followers to be patient, stressing the importance of protecting Hendricks’ family. Hendricks’ work challenged traditional interpretations of Islam and championed a compassionate, inclusive faith. South Africa’s post-apartheid constitution was the first in the world to protect people from discrimination because of their ******* orientation and in 2006, became the first country in Africa to legalise same-sex marriage. But despite a thriving LGBT community, gay people still face discrimination and violence. The country also has one of the highest ******* rates in the world. Hendricks came out as gay in 1996, which shocked the wider ******* community in Cape Town and elsewhere. That same year, he founded The Inner Circle, an organisation providing support and a safe space for ****** Muslims seeking to reconcile their faith and sexuality before going on to establish the inclusive Masjidul Ghurbaah mosque. He was the subject of a documentary in 2022 called The Radical, in which he said about the threats he faced: “The need to be authentic was greater than the fear to die.” Hendricks often spoke about the importance of interfaith dialogue and the need to address the mental health issues and trauma faced by LGBTQ+ individuals within religious communities. He told the Ilga World Conference in Cape Town last year: “It is important that we stop to look at religion as the enemy.” Reverend Jide Macaulay, an openly gay Anglican minister, described Hendricks’ death as “truly heartbreaking”. The British-********* LGBTQ rights activist runs House of Rainbow, an organisation that provides support for gay people in Nigeria where same-sex relationships or public displays of affection are ********, and paid tribute to Hendricks’ bravery. “Your leadership, courage, and unwavering dedication to inclusive faith communities have left an indelible mark,” he said. Sadiq Lawal, a gay ******* man living in Nigeria, told the BBC that Hendricks, had made such an impact as he had made “the impossible possible” by saying the words: “I’m a ****** imam.” “He’s a mentor to many ****** Muslims in Africa, especially in Nigeria, because of religious extremism,” he said. “I’m still in shock and devastated.” Source link #Worlds #openly #gay #imam #shot #dead #South #Africa Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content] -
Trump’s steel tariffs would damage *** and US, says Business Secretary Trump’s steel tariffs would damage *** and US, says Business Secretary US President Donald Trump’s planned tariffs on imports of *** steel will cause damage on both sides of the Atlantic, Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said. The Government has promised a package of up to £2.5 billion to boost the *** steel industry and help secure its future. A consultation was launched aimed at looking at long-term issues facing the sector such as high electricity costs, unfair trading practices, and scrap metal recycling. Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said tariffs would have a negative impact (James Manning/PA) (PA Wire) But the risks facing the industry could also include the 25% tax on imports planned by Mr Trump to come into force in March. Mr Reynolds told the BBC’s Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg that specialised steel from the *** was used by the US Navy on its submarines and a 25% import tariff would push up the cost to US taxpayers. “In relation to steel and aluminium, what we send to the US is very specialised, relatively niche products that the US needs,” he said. He said: “Some of the things the US imports, it hasn’t got alternative suppliers for, the submarine casings that come from Sheffield, for instance, to the US Navy. I don’t want them paying more needlessly for that, so we can engage, and we’ve already been doing that.” Asked what the impact of the tariffs due to come into force in March would be, he said: “It would be negative for ourselves, it would be negative for the US as well.” He said “there is the basis for constructive engagement” between the *** and US on tariffs, but “I’m not saying it’s easy”. “I appreciate they have a mandate for changing how they approach the issues of trade, but we have got a different argument, a different story to tell, to the EU or to China in relation to our trading relationships.” Help for the steel industry will be available through the National Wealth Fund which ministers said could benefit areas including Scunthorpe, Rotherham and Redcar, and Scotland. Funds will be spent on initiatives aimed at giving steel a long future such as electric arc furnaces. The furnaces, used to recycle scrap metal into new steel, are cleaner than blast furnaces but require fewer workers – leading to job losses across the industry. “There is a reduction in head count when you move to the new technologies that are available, that is recognised,” Mr Reynolds said. But he said there “could be more jobs in steel in the ***” if demand can be created. The announcement follows the Government’s go ahead for expansion at Heathrow Airport which will require 400,000 tonnes of steel. The industry has faced a number of challenges in recent years, including a switch to a greener method of production at the huge plant in Port Talbot, South Wales, with the loss of jobs. Mr Reynolds said the industry “has a long-term future under this Government”, adding: “The deal announced by Heathrow announced this week will secure a strong industry pipeline for years to come – and we are putting the full weight of Whitehall behind the industry to build on this success.” Gareth Stace, director general of *** Steel, said: “The Government’s commitment to our steel sector is both vital and welcome. A robust, bold, and ambitious steel strategy has the power to reverse the sector’s decline, particularly as we face increasing competition from imports benefiting from more favourable business conditions.” Unions welcomed today’s announcement. Community general secretary Roy Rickhuss said: “After a long era of neglect under the previous government, we welcome the Government’s firm commitment to our steel industry.” Andy Prendergast, GMB national secretary, said: “After years of dithering, today’s plan provides desperately needed funding for our once proud, now beleaguered steel industry. “As the world becomes more volatile, primary domestic steel making capacity is vital for both our economy and domestic security.” It is the first time in decades that a Government has made a positive commitment to invest in the *** steel industry. It is essential that all such investment is clearly linked to rock solid job guarantees. Sharon Graham, Unite general secretary Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “The launching of the steel strategy is a critical landmark for a foundation industry, whose success is essential to the wellbeing of our economy and our national security. “It is the first time in decades that a Government has made a positive commitment to invest in the *** steel industry. “It is essential that all such investment is clearly linked to rock solid job guarantees.” TUC general secretary Paul Nowak said: “If we want to make more products here in Britain and compete globally we need to be able to produce steel here.” Shadow business secretary Andrew Griffith said: “We look forward to seeing the details of this plan. A clear part must be steps to reduce the cost of energy which is placing an intolerable strain on *** steel.” Source link #Trumps #steel #tariffs #damage #Business #Secretary Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

“Performance gap between Descendants” is Preventing Devs from Balancing Meta Builds for Endgame Content in The First Descendant “Performance gap between Descendants” is Preventing Devs from Balancing Meta Builds for Endgame Content in The First Descendant Even though The First Descendant might not be the hottest game with millions of players, it still has an active community. The title is enjoyed by tens of thousands of players each day, and developer Nexon Games has brought tons of updates to keep them engaged. The First Descendant has maintained a small playerbase. (Image via Nexon Games) Unlike its rivals, Nexon actively listens to the community, decides various things based on feedback, and admits its own faults. The developer has acknowledged one of the crucial flaws in The First Descendant‘s recent patches and explained why it has failed to balance meta builds that are crucial to the end-game content. The First Descendant team acknowledges balancing issues If you’re unaware, The First Descendant has dropped a brand-new patch, and it’s called Hotfix 1.2.7. According to Nexon, this patch is meant to improve the gameplay experience and bring some new additions to the shop and some challenge events. However, what’s really interesting about this patch is that game director Minseok Joo has opened up about the difficulties Nexon faces when it comes to balancing meta builds. While Nexon has managed to improve the Void Erosion Purge with the recent patch, it hasn’t been able to solve the issue of specific weapon metas at higher difficulty levels. The main challenge, according to Joo, is the performance gap that exists between different Descendants. If the difficulty levels are balanced around the best Descendants, weaker ones will struggle hard, and balancing for lower tiers could lead to the leaderboard being absolutely dominated by a few. Nexon wants to fix this and is planning to first adjust the Descendant balance before improving the Void Erosion purge. However, since the work is already going on for Season 2 Episode 2, these balance updates will take time. Joo has apologized on behalf of the development team and promised to share updates once plans are in motion. It’s great to see that Nexon is upfront about the challenges it’s facing when it comes to balancing in The First Descendant. The First Descendant‘s ultimate move to regain players Could this feature help revive The First Descendant? (Image via Nexon Games) Even though Nexon is working hard to develop The First Descendant, the game has been facing a major downward trajectory. You might be shocked to know that the title lost 95% of its entire player count within just six months of release. However, Nexon is planning to bring a change that is sure to bring back gamers. It’s called the Hot Spring update, which will include so-called “sexy themes.” A few days ago, Nexon hosted a developer live stream and shared its content plans for the rest of the month. The First Descendant team talked about new Descendants, features, and, most crucially, hot spring additions. We still don’t know much about the hot springs other than all of the game’s female Descendants will be able to wear bikinis and show off the game’s newly added jiggle physics. With that said, what do you think The First Descendant needs to succeed? Let us know in the comments below. Fed’s focus shift: From data to policy Fed’s focus shift: From data to policy As the country faces whiplash under Trump’s deluge of executive actions, Jerome Powell and the Federal Open Market Committee are left reacting despite the data they usually rely on, explained Apollo Chief Economist Torsten Sløk to Yahoo Finance Executive Editor Brian Sozzi on a recent episode of Opening Bid. “There’s uncertainty about what’s coming,” Sløk pointed out. “And if we don’t know what’s coming when it comes to tariffs restrictions and immigration under our taxes, then they are having, probably, similar challenges with the spreadsheet that I’m having with my spreadsheet.” What’s his suggestion to the Fed, then? Sløk suggested they focus on how they assess the news. “So that’s why for them it really is a challenge of figuring out how do we make an assessment of these things that may or may not be coming in terms of what should we be doing today.” For full episodes of Opening Bid, listen on your favorite podcast platform or watch on our website. Trump admin abandons $400M purchase of armored Teslas following backlash Trump admin abandons $400M purchase of armored Teslas following backlash The Trump administration has walked back plans for a $400 million contract to purchase armored Tesla vehicles for the U.S. State Department. The revelation, which surfaced in a public government procurement document, ignited controversy over potential conflicts of interest, as Tesla CEO Elon Musk also serves as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Initially, the document explicitly named Tesla as the recipient of the lucrative deal. However, following public outcry and media coverage, the document was quietly edited to replace the automaker’s name with the more generic term “armored electric vehicles.” The State Department now says it has no immediate plans to follow through with the contract. Related: Ford CEO says factory jobs “at risk” if Trump repeals EV credits Musk’s Response and the Political Fallout Elon Musk was quick to deny knowledge of the deal, writing on X, “I’m pretty sure Tesla isn’t getting $400M. No one mentioned it to me, at least.” Despite his denial, critics argue that his close ties to the Trump administration raise concerns about potential self-dealing, particularly as Musk’s companies, including Tesla and SpaceX, continue to receive substantial government contracts. I’m pretty sure Tesla isn’t getting $400M. No one mentioned it to me, at least. — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) February 13, 2025 The controversy comes as Musk has positioned himself as a government waste watchdog, advocating for spending cuts while securing billions in federal funding for his businesses. Ethics experts have flagged this dual role as a potential conflict of interest, questioning whether his influence over government agencies creates an uneven playing field for competitors. Related: Toyota revives the Celica with high-performance GR badge A shifting procurement landscape While the $400 million Tesla deal is off the table for now, the procurement document still lists a requirement for armored electric vehicles, with an estimated five-year contract valued between $100 million and $500 million. Other automakers, including BMW, are reportedly set to receive contracts for armored SUVs, albeit at significantly lower amounts. Story continues Tesla co-founder and CEO Elon Musk unveils the all-electric battery-powered Tesla’s Cybertruck at Tesla Design Center in Hawthorne, California, on November 21, 2019.FREDERIC J&*******; BROWN/AFP via Getty Images The situation underscores broader concerns about how federal contracts are awarded and the transparency of the process. It also highlights the selective nature of the Trump administration’s approach to combating government corruption, with critics accusing the president of shielding allies like Musk from scrutiny while scaling back spending elsewhere. Related: 2025 Toyota Supra vs BMW Z4: Which one would you buy? A process halted A State Department spokesperson said Thursday that the Tesla contract began under the Biden administration as an effort to gauge private sector interest in producing armored electric vehicles. In an aerial view, brand new Tesla cars sit in a parking lot at the Tesla factory on October 19, 2022 in Fremont, California.Justin Sullivan/Getty Images At the time, Tesla was the only company to respond to the department’s request. The next step would typically involve an official solicitation, allowing multiple manufacturers to compete for the contract. However, the spokesperson confirmed that this process is now on hold. Final thoughts With the contract officially shelved, it remains unclear whether the State Department will reissue a solicitation for armored EVs or whether Tesla will still be in the running for a future deal. Regardless, the episode has intensified scrutiny of Musk’s role in government and whether his influence extends beyond what is ethically appropriate. For now, Tesla Cybertrucks will not be rolling into the State Department’s fleet—but the controversy over Musk’s government dealings is far from over. Love reading Autoblog? The Midnight Walk: release date, trailers, gameplay, and more The Midnight Walk: release date, trailers, gameplay, and more Table of Contents Table of Contents Release date Platforms Trailers Gameplay Preorder A game doesn’t have to look real to be considered as having the best graphics. We are looking forward to Ghost of Yotei just as much as South of Midnight despite them both having distinctly different art styles. The Midnight Walk is an upcoming video game that falls into the more creative side by presenting a world fully realized in claymation. While the visuals will get your attention, the world, characters, and atmosphere are more than enough to fully draw you in. If you’re a fan of unique horror games, this upcoming PS5 game and upcoming PC game deserves your attention. Here’s everything you need to know about it. Release date MoonHood The Midnight Walk will release on May 8, 2025. Platforms MoonHood Unfortunately for Xbox and Nintendo fans, The Midnight Walk is going to be a PS5 and PC exclusive. However, it also supports VR headsets to play the game completely in virtual reality. Please enable Javascript to view this content Trailers The Midnight Walk | Reveal Trailer The Midnight Walk was revealed with just a quick trailer that showed off the game’s dream-like style built entirely in claymation. The game has you play as a character named the Burnt One who emerges from their grave and meets a lantern called Potboy who has the ability to create fire. The two of them will team up to navigate and survive in a world that seeks to control that fire. The game will apparently be broken up into five tales of fire and darkness, though it isn’t clear how that functions in terms of the story. That’s all we know about the plot itself except that we can expect to encounter many terrifying and offbeat characters and monsters along the way. Gameplay The Midnight Walk | Release Date Announcement Trailer You will play The Midnight Walk entirely in first-person, which is where the VR support comes in, as you explore the hand-crafted world. All assets of the game were modeled in clay before being scanned into the game, giving each environment, character, and monster a sense of groundedness despite the nightmarish designs. From what we’ve seen, gameplay looks to be divided between exploration and interacting with NPCs, and then stealth and chase sequences with aggressive creatures. There is one instance where we see the use of some kind of firearm, but it only seems to annoy the monster rather than damage or defeat it. There may also be elements of an ******* quest if the goal is to protect Potboy, but it is hard to tell from what has been shown thus far. Preorder MoonHood With a release date of May 8, you can grab your The Midnight Walk preorder right now on the PlayStation Store page. There is only one edition, but PlayStation Plus subscribers do get it at a 10% discount. PC players can’t preorder it right now, but it is still available to wishlist on Steam. A man in his 40s made 3 changes to his diet and workouts to build muscle, burn ****, and reboot his energy A man in his 40s made 3 changes to his diet and workouts to build muscle, burn ****, and reboot his energy A 46-year-old man said he worked out for years without seeing the results he wanted. He achieved a more athletic physique and improved his strength and energy by tracking his routine. Counting macros like protein and increasing his workout intensity helped to burn **** and build muscle. Getting older doesn’t have to derail your gains if you make smart choices with your diet and workouts. That’s according to a 46-year-old man who transformed his fitness. Gerry Skehan, a communications professional based in Berlin, had always gone to the gym regularly, but working a desk job for more than a decade took a toll. He wasn’t seeing the same progress as in his 20s, despite working out just as hard. “Since turning 40, I felt that it was natural that I would develop a dad bod,” he told Business Insider. “I wanted to look like someone who is exercising and I felt like I didn’t.” While there’s nothing wrong with a dad bod, Skehan wanted to break through his fitness plateau. In August 2024, he started working with Adam Enaz, a personal trainer and dietitian who specializes in fitness transformations. In the half a year since, Skehan said, he has improved his strength and energy, seen more defined muscle, and lost ****. His routine involved keeping tabs on his calories, protein, and exercise weight and reps. “Despite your age, you can really achieve at lot,” Skehan said. “Before I started, was feeling quite sluggish. This has rebooted me. I feel a lot more lively and spring out of bed in the morning.” For **** loss, count calories and protein Skehan said paying attention to his diet was the first step in burning **** and achieving better muscle definition, since he would previously overeat without realizing. Eating fewer calories than you burn off with exercise is key to **** loss, while protein helps build and maintain muscle.Courtesy of Gerry Skehan “It was more about being aware of what I’m consuming. In the past I had no idea how many calories I was having,” he said. Since working with Enaz, he follows daily and weekly goals for protein and calories. While he mostly eats home-cooked meals, a flexible plan which means he still enjoys social events or an occassion indulgent day without getting off track overall. “I’m able to go for a drink or go for dinner with friends as long as it fits the goal,” Skehan said. “Sometimes I don’t hit all the correct macros but at the end of the week it’s taken into account. It doesn’t feel like this obsessive thing. It’s pretty easy to stick to.” A flexible approaching to dieting can make it easier to sustain over time, and consistency is more effective than maintaining a strict plan, dietitians previously told Business Insider. Build strength and muscle by tracking workouts Skehan’s current routine includes four to five sessions per week, with full-body workouts to hit each muscle group using exercises like lunges, squats, bench presses, and shoulder presses. He uses combination of free weights and gym equipment like the Smith machine, which is like a barbell rack with rails and safety ledges so the bar can only move up or down. That provides more support and prevents the bar from swinging sideways or dropping. The routine provides the best of both worlds in functional strength and muscle gains, according to his trainer. “Machine-based exercise is more stable so they can go heavier,” Enaz said. To build muscle — and see the results quickly — it’s essential to consistently increase the weight or reps (known as progressive overload), Enaz said. “It’s easy to see and track. In the past when I had trained, I didn’t feel like things were as precise,” Skehan said. “I actually look forward to it, it doesn’t feel like a burden.” Stay spry with mobility exercise for better gains A few minutes of stretching in each workout has made a big difference for Skehan in terms of how he feels and his exercise performance, too. “Any time I don’t stretch, things tend to bother me,” he said. Improving your mobility (especially as you get older) can help you avoid getting hurt, and also lead to more gains, since limitations in your movement can actually impair muscle growth, according to Enaz. “People in their 20s, their bodies are more flexible and less prone to injury,” Enaz said. “Range of motion is really important.” Read the original article on Business Insider Source link #man #40s #diet #workouts #build #muscle #burn #**** #reboot #energy Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

How to transmog and hide gear in Avowed How to transmog and hide gear in Avowed In older RPGs, you would have to sacrifice that armor set you love the look of for the newer one that had better stats. In Avowed, it isn’t exactly a secret tip or trick that wearing the more powerful gear is important, but that doesn’t mean you need to sacrifice fashion. If you’re playing in third-person especially, you want to make sure your character looks cool while exploring and using your flashy skills. Transmog has become more common lately, and thankfully is present in Avowed so you can wear the most powerful armor while still appearing like your old favorite. Or, you can hide all your armor completely if you want. Here’s how to do both. Obsidian How to hide or transmog your armor Gear in Avowed only consists of your main armor and your gloves, but you can hide or transmog both of them to be as fashionable as you want. Hiding your armor can be done no matter what, but you need to have at least two sets of gear to transmog. Step 1: Pause the game and go into your Inventory. Step 2: In the armor section, equip the armor you want the stats from and highlight the other armor you want to appear wearing. Step 3: Press RT on controller or left click on PC to apply the appearance of that armor to your character. Step 4: To hide your armor, press RT or left click while highlighting the armor you are currently wearing. You can transmog your main armor, boots, and gloves individually for more variety, but you do need to own whatever armor you want to transmog so don’t sell or break down any gear you like the look of. Broadcom, TSMC eye possible Intel deals to split chipmaker Broadcom, TSMC eye possible Intel deals to split chipmaker The logo of Intel is seen during Computex 2024 in Taipei, Taiwan, June 4, 2024. I-hwa Cheng | Afp | Getty Images Intel’s rivals Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. and Broadcom are each eyeing potential deals that would break the U.S. chipmaking icon in two, the Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday, citing people familiar with the matter. Broadcom has been closely examining Intel’s chip design and marketing business, the Journal reported, adding that the company had discussed a potential bid with its advisers but would likely only proceed if it found a partner for Intel’s manufacturing business. TSMC, the world’s biggest contract chipmaker, has separately studied controlling some or all of Intel’s chip plants, potentially as part of an investor consortium or other structure, the report said. Broadcom and TSMC are not working together, and all of the talks so far are preliminary and largely informal, the Journal added. Intel’s interim executive chairman, Frank Yeary, has been leading the discussions with possible suitors and Trump administration officials, who are concerned about the fate of a company seen as critical to national security, the report said. Yeary has been telling individuals close to him that he is most focused on maximizing value for Intel shareholders, the report added. Intel, Broadcom, TSMC and the White House did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment. A White House official told Reuters on Friday that President Donald Trump’s administration might not support Intel’s U.S. chip factories being operated by a foreign entity after Bloomberg reported that TSMC was considering taking a controlling stake in Intel’s factories at Trump’s request. The White House official said the Trump administration supported foreign companies investing and building in the U.S. but was “unlikely” to support a foreign firm operating Intel’s factories. Bloomberg reported that Trump’s team raised the idea of a deal between the two firms in recent meetings with officials from TSMC, who were receptive, citing a person familiar with the matter. Intel was among the largest beneficiaries of the U.S. push to onshore critical chip manufacturing led by former President Joe Biden’s administration. In November, the U.S. Commerce Department said it was finalizing a $7.86 billion government subsidy for Intel. The company is one of a few chipmakers that design and manufacture semiconductors. TSMC boasts a market valuation about eight times larger than that of Intel. The Taiwanese company’s customers include AI chip leader Nvidia and AMD, which is Intel’s fierce rival in PC and server markets. Former Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger, who was ousted last year, set sky-high expectations for Intel’s manufacturing and AI capabilities among major clients but fell short, leading to the chipmaker losing or canceling contracts, Reuters reported previously. Intel’s shares lost about 60% of their value last year as the company’s capital-intensive bid to bolster manufacturing — a strategy championed by Gelsinger — strained its cash flow and ultimately led to it cutting about 15% of its workforce. How to turn off damage numbers in Avowed How to turn off damage numbers in Avowed One of the simple tips and tricks RPGs rely on to show how powerful you are is to display your damage in numbers. Avowed does this for every attack and ability you use, meaning you will see a ton of numbers pop up during your adventure. While they can be helpful at times, enemies also have health bars to see how much damage you’re doing so having those numbers pop up can be more distracting than anything else, especially in third-person. Thankfully the game lets you turn these off to get a slightly more grounded experience. Here’s how to quickly toggle this setting off. Obsidian How to turn off damage numbers Damage numbers are always on by default and will pop up whenever an enemy takes damage. That can be from an attack, skill, or status effect like burning. If you’re stick of seeing all these numbers, follow these steps to disable them. Step 1: Pause the game and go into Settings. Step 2: Go into the UI tab. Step 3: Scroll down to the HUD Setting section and find Damage Numbers. Step 4: Change it from On to Off. You are always free to turn damage numbers back on from this menu, but you won’t be missing out on anything if you prefer to have them off. FSP Hydro PTM X Pro 1000W ATX 3.0 PSU Review FSP Hydro PTM X Pro 1000W ATX 3.0 PSU Review The global power supply market has witnessed significant growth in recent years, driven by the increasing adoption of high-performance computing systems and the growing demand for energy-efficient products. According to a report by ReportLinker, the global PSU market is expected to reach $46.2 billion by 2027, with a CAGR of 5.9% from 2020 to 2027 (revised to 5.5% post-pandemic). Although the report includes almost every type of PSU (and not just PC PSUs), it also mentions the increasing demand for high-wattage PSUs for gaming and mining applications, which is expected to drive market growth further. Fortron Source Power, commonly known as FSP, was one of the primary sources that facilitated this report. FSP is a Taiwanese company that has been providing power supply solutions since 1993. The company prides itself on its commitment to quality and innovation and has gained recognition for its reliable and energy-efficient products. FSP’s product portfolio includes power supplies for personal computers, servers, industrial and medical equipment, LED lighting, and electric vehicles. FSP’s power supply unit (PSU) division is one of its flagship businesses, and the company has been consistently expanding its product lineup to meet the growing demand for high-quality PSUs. The company offers a wide range of options to cater to different user needs. We look at the Hydro PTM X Pro 1000W, one of FSP’s first ATX 3.0-compliant units, to see if it can rank among our best power supplies list. The PTM X Pro series is aimed at system builders seeking a higher performance level and willing to pay a little extra for a Platinum-level efficiency certification. The box is very sturdy and the product is additionally protected inside thick packaging foam slabs. A wealth of information about the unit and its highlight, the PCIe 5.0 12+4 pin cable, can be found on every side of the box. (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) Besides the necessary mounting screws and AC power cable, the company also supplies a couple of cable straps and a jump-start adapter for testing the PSU without connecting it to a motherboard. There are also two sets of side stickers, one green, and one red. The blue set is already glued to the unit. These stickers are permanent and cannot be removed without damaging them. FSP clarifies that the stickers do not affect the warranty, thus they can be removed/replaced without any repercussions for the consumers. (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) The FSP Hydro PTM X Pro 1000W PSU is a fully modular design, allowing for the removal of every DC power cable, including the 24-pin ATX connector. Nearly all of the cables are ******, ribbon-like, with ****** connectors. The only exception lies with the PCIe 5.0 12WHPWR cable, which also is all-******, but it is a classic sleeved cable instead. Actually, the company took it a step further than sticking to ATX-compliant size and reduced the length of the unit down to 130 mm, 10 mm shorter than the ATX-dictated length of 140 mm. This matters little to most users as the PSU still requires an ATX case to fit and would fit even if it was 10 mm longer – however, it could be important for those who explore custom builds and unique projects. (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) FSP sprayed the chassis with a textured paint that is both visually appealing and resistant to fingerprints. The fan finger guard is a separate but custom part, with the company logo decorating its center. The sticker with the unit’s electrical certifications and specifications covers most of the unit’s top side. (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) Decorative blue-themed stickers are pre-applied on the sides of the unit, which can be replaced with the red or green stickers that FSP includes in the package. The downside here is that the stickers will be destroyed once removed, making any choice technically permanent. There is also no embossed area or guide for the stickers, requiring a lot of attention and finesse when installing them to ensure they are level and symmetric. Image 1 of 2 (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) A typical on/off switch can be seen at the rear side of the unit, beside the power connector. Another small switch right next to it controls the “ECO Mode” of the cooling fan. When activated, the cooling fan will shut off while the load is under 300 Watt. The front side of the unit is home to the numerous connectors for the modular cables. A subtle legend is printed under each group of connectors, sprayed directly onto the chassis, with the series logo covering the rest of the surface. (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) Internal Design Due to the reduced size of the chassis, FSP’s engineers were limited to a 120 mm fan for the cooling needs of the Hydro PTM X Pro 1000W PSU. The fan is supplied by Protechnic Electric, FSP’s usual supplier of cooling fans. It is the MGA12012XF-O25, an 120 mm fan with a fluid-dynamic bearing (FDB) engine and an extremely high maximum rotational speed of 2700 RPM. (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) While most units nowadays on the market have a hidden ODM behind them, FSP is the sole company behind the creation of the Hydro PTM X Pro PSU from paper to product. A quick glance at the platform reveals that it is not just an upgraded version of the Hydro G Pro, but is in fact a significantly different design. Aside from the connector of the cooling fan, where someone went a bit overboard with the glue, the layout is extremely well organized. Image 1 of 2 (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) The filtering stage begins on the rear of the AC receptacle and is textbook, with a total of four Y capacitors, two X capacitors, and two filtering inductors leading to a dual input rectifying bridge configuration. Both of the rectifying bridges share a sizable heatsink that is sandwiched in between them. The passive APFC components are two large 450V/470μF APFC capacitors by Nippon Chemi-**** and a sizable filtering coil. The active APFC components are on a long heatsink right across the edge of the PCB. (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) Unlike typical configurations that achieve the 80Plus Platinum certification level, the Hydro PTM X Pro has only two transistors that form a half-bridge inversion topology at the primary side of the transformer. The typical configuration here would be a full-bridge to give the unit that little bit of extra efficiency needed to reach a Platinum certification level, but FSP’s engineers managed to reach that efficiency threshold without it. (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) The secondary side is essentially placed on vertical PCBs. The smaller board is home to the LLC resonant circuitry and the larger board holds the majority of the secondary rectification stage, including the transformer itself. FSP’s engineers implemented synchronous rectification with very high-efficiency switchers (Toshiba TPHR8504PL), which is primarily how this unit reached so high-efficiency figures. The 3.3V and 5V lines are being generated via the DC-to-DC conversion circuits, which is the norm for all high-efficiency designs. All of the secondary capacitors, electrolytic and polymer alike, are provided by Nippon Chemi-****. A large number of additional filtering capacitors have been placed on the PCB holding the cable connectors. (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) Cold Test Results Cold Test Results (25°C Ambient) For the testing of PSUs, we are using high precision electronic loads with a maximum power draw of 2700 Watts, a Rigol DS5042M 40 MHz oscilloscope, an Extech 380803 power analyzer, two high precision UNI-T UT-325 digital thermometers, an Extech HD600 SPL meter, a self-designed hotbox and various other bits and parts. Image 1 of 5 (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) When aiming for an 80Plus certification, designers usually focus on receiving the certification with an input voltage of 115 VAC, where the requirements are lower. The FSP Hydro PTM X Pro is a rare example of a unit managing to reach the 80Plus certification requirements regardless whether the input voltage is 115 VAC or 230 VAC. It displayed exceptional conversion efficiency figures, resulting to an average nominal load range (20% to 100% of the unit’s capacity) efficiency of 93.6% when powered from a 230 VAC source, which drops down to 92.2% when powered from a 115 VAC source. These figures are high even for an 80Plus Platinum certified unit. Furthermore, this is a very rare case where the efficiency jumps up momentously when the load increases towards 20%, so the losses when the load is very low are actually higher and make the unit run a bit hotter. We ran our tests with the Eco mode disabled, meaning that the fan began spinning instantly when the PSU was powered on. The cooling profile of the Hydro PTM X Pro is very similar to that of the cheaper Hydro G Pro but the difference in efficiency gives the former a vast advantage. The fan stays almost inaudible while the load is lower than 500 Watt, at which point it will begin spinning quicker in order to cope with the increased losses. However, the noise does not reach very high figures and the fan never reached its maximum speed even though the component temperatures are very low for a unit with that high a power capacity. There was clearly much room for better acoustics here but, much like we have seen in their previous designs, FSPs engineers steer their designs towards reliability over acoustics. Hot Test Results Hot Test Results (~45°C Ambient) Every typical PSU design takes an overall performance hit when it operates in a hot environment. The FSP Hydro PTM X Pro displayed very high resistance to higher temperatures, with miniscule efficiency drop figures. The drop is an average of just 0.4% across the nominal load range and changes insignificantly when the PSU is fully loaded, suggesting that there is very little to no thermal stress. Image 1 of 5 (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) The internal temperatures of the Hydro PTM X Pro are very low compared to any high output PSU operating in our hotbox. Although the temperature readings are on the heatsinks and not on the components themselves, these are amongst the lowest we have ever recorded from our testing of high output units and yet another indication that the engineers steered the design greatly towards reliability over everything else. As expected, the hot environment changed the cooling profile of the Hydro PTM X Pro significantly. The cooling fan is relatively quiet when the load is very low but its speed will start increasing when the load goes above 200 Watt. The fan’s speed and, in extend, the noise increases almost linearly between 200 and 900 Watt load, at which point the fan reached its maximum speed. It is worthwhile to mention that the fan reached its maximum speed at a load much higher and while maintaining far lower operating temperatures than FSP’s 80Plus Gold certified unit. PSU Quality and Bottom Line Power Supply Quality The electrical performance of the FSP Hydro PTM X Pro 1000W PSU is excellent, even for a top-tier product. It displayed outstanding filtering, with a maximum ripple of 30 mV on the 12 V line and 16/14 mV on the 3.3V/5V lines respectively. Regulation is great as well, with the unit maintaining the regulation below 0.9% on all three of its primary power outputs. As part of our standard testing, we test the primary protections of all PSUs we review (Over Current, Over Voltage, Over Power, and Short Circuit). The FSP Hydro PTM X Pro 1000W ATX 3.0 unit successfully passed all of the tests, generally reacting timely when needed and shutting down to protect itself and the components it is powering. The OCP and OPP protections are set a bit high, with the unit almost immediately reacting to 135% current and 128% load respectively. These protections generally tend to be slack on ATX 3.0 units due to the power excursion requirements. The company’s engineers are using top-line active components that were essentially required to achieve its very high-efficiency ratings, as well as only Japanese capacitors from Nippon Chemi-**** that are known for their durability, ensuring that the unit can withstand heavy use and deliver consistent power. Perhaps the most prominent feature of the Hydro PTM X Pro is its excellent electrical performance. The unit delivered outstanding energy conversion efficiency, even for an 80Plus Platinum certified unit, and can reach the certification’s requirements regardless of the input voltage. Additionally, the voltage filtering and regulation are exceptional, ensuring stable power delivery to the system. (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) The thermal performance of the Hydro PTM X Pro is also noteworthy. The design favors reliability and low temperatures over acoustics, resulting in minimal-to-zero thermal stress. The unit’s components operate at very low temperatures, which is great for its longevity. However, the noise output of the Hydro PTM X Pro is mediocre, it’s quiet at lower loads and tolerable at higher loads at room temperature, but with high noise output if both the load and the ambient temperature are high. (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) Hydro PTM X Pro’s current retail pricing is at $170, which is not too high but may deter some buyers as less efficient units can be found selling for significantly less. Overall, the Hydro PTM X Pro offers great performance and reliability. Despite the lack of groundbreaking features or figures, it is a solid choice for users looking for a dependable ATX 3.0 power supply unit with good all-around performance. The Best skills in Avowed The Best skills in Avowed Table of Contents Table of Contents Best Fighter abilities Best Ranger abilities Best Wizard abilities As a new arrival in the Living Lands of Avowed, your character has to learn a lot of tips and tricks to survive in this powderkeg of an island. You have an important mission to find a way to cure the Dreamscourge, but there’s a lot of danger between you and that goal which will require more than just your weapons. Leveling up will let you spend your points on new skills, just like most RPGs, but they are split between several pages. You are not locked into a single class and can invest your points into one or all of them, but there are some skills that you will want to prioritize getting first. Here are the best abilities you should work toward unlocking in Avowed. Best Fighter abilities The skill tree in Avowed. Charge Charge is an easy pick to invest your first few points into on the Fighter tree. It is a powerful dashing attack that can interrupt enemies with an explosive hit that breaks through guards. For bosses, saving this move to stop a deadly attack while staying in melee range is always reliable. The explosive damage is good for splash damage but also has utility outside of combat. Instead of wasting grenades to break walls, you can just use this skill to blast down cracked walls. Constant Recovery No matter what weapons you focus on, you’re going to get hit eventually. Melee fighters especially will be tanking a ton of hits, so Constant Recovery will keep you alive without draining all your potions. When hit, you can recover 50% of your HP lost over time, and with further upgrades, this skill can eventually let you restore all the damage you took. Devastating Criticals There’s nothing more satisfying than a critical hit. You can increase the chances of landing one with your character traits, but this skill makes each one count by upping the damage by 30% at the first level and 60% at max. Reflect The main issue with being a melee class is all those pesky rangers. Having a second loadout with a ranged weapon is always a good idea, but Reflect can almost do the job on its own. If you time your block perfectly when a projectile is about to hit, you can send it back to hit the attacker. Best Ranger abilities Obsidian Tanglefoot Tanglefoot is a skill every class should keep handy, but especially rangers. It prevents a target from moving for 8 seconds (up to 12) and can even inflict poison when upgraded. Most fights in Avowed will swarm you with enemies and your companions can only draw so much aggro so having a way to keep yourself from getting surrounded is vital. Steady aim When you aim with a bow, you have the chance to hit an enemy’s weak point for bonus damage. Unless you’re in stealth, it is very difficult to land another hit on a weak point on purpose when everyone is running around. Steady Aim lets you slow down time by 25% (up to 75%) when aiming to land more shots. Shadowing Beyond Stealth is how you should begin every encounter in Avowed, but sometimes there’s no way to take advantage of stealth based on enemy placement. Or, you just want to sneak past and not start a fight at all. Shadowing Beyond lets you turn completely invisible while draining your essence. Upgrading it will boost the damage you deal on your first attack from stealth and your movement speed. Bear Ally This skill lets you summon a bear. Do you need any more justification than that? Sure, it only lasts a maximum of 45 seconds, but that’s plenty of time to give yourself breathing room and snipe enemies from a safe distance while the enemy deals with a magical bear. Best Wizard abilities Obsidian Chill Blades Each element has a benefit to building up its accumulation, but frost is the best one to grab first for all classes. This spell shoots ice shards that can freeze an enemy in place for free attacks to let you retreat for a moment. Ice is also very handy to have for creating ice platforms in water or breaking certain metal barriers. Wand Mastery Wizards will be casting plenty of spells, but your main wand attack will always be your primary damage dealer. Wand Mastery isn’t super exciting, but a flat 25 to 50% damage increase on all attacks can’t be ignored. Grimoire Mastery For full magic builds, you will be holding a grimoire in your off-hand at all times for easy access to more spells. Until you level up Grimoir Mastery, though, you are stuck using the weakest spells. Besides letting you use level 5, 10, 15, and 20 spells, it also reduces their essence cost. Secret of Rime – increase frost accumulation by 20 to 45% (or choose whichever element you want, fire, shock, poison) Once you get deep into Avowed and find which element accumulation effect you like most, invest deeper into it. Secret of Rime, for example, focuses on frost accumulation but each one increases that element’s rate of buildup by 20 to 45% so you can trigger the effect far faster. TSMC in dilemma as US pushes ‘Made in USA’ strategy with Intel TSMC in dilemma as US pushes ‘Made in USA’ strategy with Intel The U.S. government is looking to shift from TSMC as a major supplier of the nation’s technological components to relying on parts made by American companies. The company, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd is one of the premier component suppliers in the world. It particularly partners with many U.S. brands, using its ever-advancing manufacturing processes to build the semiconductors that power many of the electronics that we use today, from brands such as Apple. However, the Trump Administration is adamant about pushing forward a “Made In USA” ethos when it comes to developing products moving forward. DIGITIMES: Three proposals the United States has presented to TSMC. 1. TSMC would build an advanced packaging facility in the US, offering integrated services from wafer manufacturing to backend processing locally. 2. Under a joint venture (JV) proposed by the US government,… — Jukanlosreve (@Jukanlosreve) February 13, 2025 Tech informant, @Jukanlosreve detailed; referencing the Taiwanese publication DigiTimes, that the U.S. government has given TSMC three alternatives to retain business within the country. Ultimately, the plan would meld TSMC from an international corporation to one with the U.S. as its domestic home base, in addition to assisting the U.S.-founded Intel Foundry in gaining traction in the industry. The first option proposes that TSMC establish a packaging facility stateside. This would be a major step toward the U.S.’ aim of not having to rely on international resources. However, TSMC has already been slow to consider this option due to “labor shortages and low-profit margins,” Jukanlosreve noted. The second option proposes a joint venture between TSMC and Intel Foundry, in which TSMC and other companies would invest in Intel financially, and there could be a potential technology transfer of TSMC’s company and intellectual property. The Taiwanese manufacturer is strongly against this option as it could take TSMC out of the semiconductor market, potentially to put Intel Foundry in its place. Wccftech noted that TSMC and Intel use different manufacturing technologies, suggesting a refreshed Intel would need to develop a new manufacturing process. The third option proposes that Intel Foundry move forward as the main supplier for all U.S. partners. Once again, this option puts TSMC at risk of losing, not only its customers but its mainstay in the industry. This news among various reports sent Intel stock up in recent days, with shares trading at 29.2% on Thursday and seeing a four-day positive streak, according to Dow Jones Market Data. The spike came after Vice President J.D. Vance spoke at an artificial intelligence summit in Paris earlier this week, about bringing semiconductor manufacturing to the U.S. being an important goal of the new administration. He noted that Intel stood to benefit from any plans the government has given it is the country’s largest chip manufacturer, according to Market Watch. Also noting the speculation of the government proposing a joint venture between TSMC and Intel’s foundry business, some analysts believe the Trump administration will continue to promote the U.S. Chips Act so it can get its plans of funding and building U.S.-based chip plants in action. They add that Intel Foundry has positives and negatives. Once part of Intel’s hardware business, it was eventually separated into its own entity. While it has yet to sign on any major customers, it is one of the only U.S. semiconductor manufacturers that produces chips domestically, according to TechInsights vice chair, G. Dan Hutcheson. The industry has heard speculations of the government’s plans; however, it is also privy to both Intel and TSMC’s upcoming manufacturing processes; with Intel’s being the 18a and TSMC the 2nm, or two-nanometer process. Analysts including TechInsight’s, Scotten Jones have compared the two processes and determined that Intel’s 18a performed better. While all the reports remain speculative, the spotlight will certainly now be on both Intel and TSMC. Outside of any government plans, reports indicate that both companies are working on releasing their next-generation technologies within the next year. Intel’s 18a process is expected to become available for mass production starting in mid-2025 when the brand starts manufacturing it’s Core Ultra 3-series ‘Panther Lake’ processors. Dozens including women killed in collapse Dozens including women killed in collapse More than 40 people, mostly women, were killed after an ******** gold mine collapsed in Mali on Saturday. The collapse took place near Kenieba, in Mali’s western, gold-rich Kayes region. The victims had climbed into open-pit areas left by industrial miners to look for scraps of gold when the earth around them caved in, a gold miner’s union leader told Reuters. This is Mali’s second deadly mining accident in three weeks, after at least 10 people were killed when a mining tunnel flooded late in January. Reports of the exact number who died in Saturday’s accident are conflicting. A local police source told the AFP news agency that 48 people were killed in the collapse, while the head of an industry union told Reuters there were 43 victims. “Some of the victims fell into the water. Among them was a woman with her baby on her back,” the local police source told AFP. Mali is one of the biggest gold producers in the world. Accidents are common in the country as much mining activity is unregulated, with miners using unsafe methods to dig for gold. Just over a year ago, at least 40 people were killed after a tunnel collapsed in a mine. A spokesperson from the country’s mines ministry confirmed to Reuters that the accident had taken place between the towns of Kenieba and Dabia, but declined to give further details. Ministry teams are drawing up a report at the scene, Reuters reports. The collapse on Saturday occurred at an abandoned site formerly operated by a ******** company, according to AFP. Beijing is heavily invested in developing Mali’s mining industries, with the approval of its government. Mali is currently engaged in a dispute over revenue sharing with one of the largest mining companies in the country, the ********* firm Barrick. Last month, the Malian government seized gold bars worth $245m (£194m) from Barrick and issued an arrest warrant for its CEO, Mark Bristow. Mr Bristow said he had “no doubt” the conflict would be resolved in an interview with Bloomberg this week. Release date Ultizero After over 10 years of development, Lost Soul Aside finally has a firm release date. The game will launch on May 30, 2025. Platforms Ultizero Lost Soul Aside is coming to PS5 and PC. Because it is being published by PlayStation, don’t expect to see this as an upcoming Xbox Series X game. Please enable Javascript to view this content Trailers Lost Soul Aside – TrailerHD The first trailer for Lost Soul Aside was posted 8 years ago now and is interesting to look at, but is certainly not fully representative of the game we’ll be playing in May. Check it out if you want to see just how far things have come. [Audio Fix] Lost Soul Aside – 18 Minutes of New Gameplay (2021) The next major trailer was in 2021 with an 18 minute gameplay trailer. This is much closer to what the game is now and is still the most thorough look at the game in action we have. Lost Soul Aside – Pre-Order Trailer | PS5 & PC Games Appearing one more time at the February State of Play, the preorder trailer finally gave us a firm release date for Lost Soul Aside. Lost Soul Aside will star Kazer on a quest for redemption after forming a mysterious connection to another race called Arena. This bond allows him to communicate with the Arena, as well as summon weapons and perform all the feats we see in gameplay. Beyond the world itself being in a state of war, that’s about all we know of the plot. Gameplay Ultizero Taking cues from character action games, Lost Soul Aside features smooth, fast-paced, and stylish action. The developer admits to being inspired by Final Fantasy XV, though it looks much more similar to Final Fantasy XVI now. This is most evident in the main character’s design, which looks strikingly similar to Noctis. Kazer can summon a variety of weapons to attack, swapping them to create varied combos on the fly. Each weapon has a different function but can all be chained together. Action is meant to be fast, heavy on dodges, juggles, and full of particles. The closest comparisons would be the aforementioned FF16 or ****** May Cry 5. The game appears focused mainly on big spectacle boss battles, but there are instances of more traditional mob fights as well. Arena can also help with traversal. We see Kazer run along walls, call a floating platform, and even summon wings to glide with across environments. Levels are linear, so there’s no open world to explore but is said to still have secrets to discover. The player will be able to customize loadouts, presumably with different weapon combinations but possibly gear as well, unlock new skills, and more. Preorder Ultizero Preorders for Lost Soul Aside will be available starting February 19 and offer two versions. Here’s what bonuses you get with each: Standard Edition – $60 Preorder bonuses: Kaser’s original outfit from the game’s earliest reveal, giving players a nostalgic look back at how it all began. CD rates today, February 16, 2025 (up to 4.35% APY) CD rates today, February 16, 2025 (up to 4.35% APY) CD rates vary widely across financial institutions, so it’s important to ensure you’re getting the best rate possible when shopping around for a CD. The following is a breakdown of CD rates today and where to find the best offers. Historically, longer-term CDs offered higher interest rates than shorter-term CDs. Generally, this is because banks would pay better rates to encourage savers to keep their money on deposit longer. However, in today’s economic climate, the opposite is true. See our picks for the best CD accounts available today>> Today, the highest CD rate 4.35% APY, offered by LendingClub on its 10-month CD. A minimum opening deposit of $2,500 is required. Here is a look at some of the best CD rates available today from our verified partners: This embedded content is not available in your region. The amount of interest you can earn from a CD depends on the annual percentage rate (APY). This is a measure of your total earnings after one year when considering the base interest rate and how often interest compounds (CD interest typically compounds daily or monthly). Say you invest $1,000 in a one-year CD with 1.81% APY, and interest compounds monthly. At the end of that year, your balance would grow to $1,018.25 — your initial $1,000 deposit, plus $18.25 in interest. Now let’s say you choose a one-year CD that offers 4% APY instead. In this case, your balance would grow to $1,040.74 over the same *******, which includes $40.74 in interest. The more you deposit in a CD, the more you stand to earn. If we took our same example of a one-year CD at 4% APY, but deposit $10,000, your total balance when the CD matures would be $10,407.42, meaning you’d earn $407.42 in interest. Read more: What is a good CD rate? When choosing a CD, the interest rate is usually top of mind. However, the rate isn’t the only factor you should consider. There are several types of CDs that offer different benefits, though you may need to accept a slightly lower interest rate in exchange for more flexibility. Here’s a look at some of the common types of CDs you can consider beyond traditional CDs: Bump-up CD: This type of CD allows you to request a higher interest rate if your bank’s rates go up during the account’s term. However, you’re usually allowed to “bump up” your rate just once. No-penalty CD: Also known as a liquid CD, type of CD gives you the option to withdraw your funds before maturity without paying a penalty. Jumbo CD: These CDs require a higher minimum deposit (usually $100,000 or more), and often offer higher interest rate in return. In today’s CD rate environment, however, the difference between traditional and jumbo CD rates may not be much. Brokered CD: As the name suggests, these CDs are purchased through a brokerage rather than directly from a bank. Brokered CDs can sometimes offer higher rates or more flexible terms, but they also carry more risk and might not be FDIC-insured. This embedded content is not available in your region.
