Dark algae could accelerate melting of Greenland ice sheet Dark algae could accelerate melting of Greenland ice sheet Algae on the Greenland ice sheet absorb light and accelerate melting Laura Halbach Dark algae that grow on the surface of Arctic ice sheets are likely to expand their range in the future, a trend that will exacerbate melt, sea level rise and warming. “These algae are not a new phenomenon,” says James Bradley at the Mediterranean Institute of Oceanography in Marseille, France. “But if they bloom more intensely, or the bloom is more widespread, then it would be an important thing to consider in future projections of sea level rise.” Greenland’s ice sheet, which covers most of the island, is rapidly melting due to rising temperatures, making it the biggest single contributor to sea level rise worldwide. Ancylonema algae under the microscope Nature Communications Ancylonema algal species bloom on ice patches, called ablation zones, which are exposed as the snow line recedes on the ice sheet each summer. The blooms darken the ice, reducing its reflectivity and absorbing more heat, thereby enhancing melt in these areas by an estimated 10 to 13 per cent. To better understand this feedback loop, Bradley and his colleagues collected Ancylonema samples from the south-west tip of the ice sheet and examined the cells with advanced imaging techniques. The results revealed that the algae are highly adapted to nutrient-poor conditions, suggesting that they could make inroads into ice at higher elevations, where nutrients are scarce. Global warming is already causing the snow line to retreat to increased altitudes over time, exposing more ice, which is less reflective than snow and therefore accelerates melt. Ice algae add yet another layer to these interactions that will need to be accounted for in future climate projections. “We’ve been studying glacier algal blooms for several years now, but one of the big questions remaining has been how they are able to grow to such high numbers in such nutrient-poor ice,” says Christopher Williamson at the University of Bristol, ***, who wasn’t involved in the project. “One big part of understanding this puzzle is how much nutrient is needed by the glacier algal cells and whether they are able to efficiently take up and store the scarce nutrients available in the system. This study does a great job of demonstrating these things using cutting-edge methodologies.” Topics: Source link #Dark #algae #accelerate #melting #Greenland #ice #sheet Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Reach share price surges 29pc on shallow WA Murchison gold results Reach share price surges 29pc on shallow WA Murchison gold results Reach Resources’ share price surged up 29 per cent this morning to 1.8 cents per share, some 125pc up on this time last week, after the company unveiled initial drilling results from its Murchison South gold project in Western Australia. The first two reverse circulation (RC) drill holes intersected shallow high-grade gold, including an impressive 41-metre section grading 2.01 grams per tonne (g/t) that started immediately from surface. The intercept included a higher-grade 5m section of 10.01g/t from 36m. The program comprised 14 RC holes for 1463m of drilling, which was focused on validating historical data while refining a new mineralisation model for the Murchison South project’s Blue Heaven deposit, in the hot property Murchison gold region. Reach says the results confirm its updated mineralisation model that gold-bearing quartz veins host the intercepts and remain open at depth, supporting resource expansion opportunities. The company expects assay results from the remaining 12 drill holes next week. The findings will guide upcoming resource definition work. These fantastic initial results give us a great start towards validation of the historic drilling and resource model at our Blue Heaven deposit. We have hit some high-grade shallow gold intervals, which align with the model, which is very encouraging, and we now eagerly await assays from the remaining 12 holes so we can get a complete understanding of our project. The Murchison South project is shaping up to be a growing priority for Reach, complementing its critical minerals portfolio that spans lithium, rare earths, niobium and manganese. While historically seen as a secondary asset, the project has gained renewed significance amid soaring gold prices, which recently surged to unheard of highs past $4600 per ounce. Reach’s project sits near Paynes Find, about 430km northeast of Perth, which features a high-grade inferred mineral resource of 1.035 million tonnes at 3.2g/t gold for 105,000 ounces. Paynes Find has a higher-grade component of 582,000t at 4.7g/t for 87,000 ounces. The project, formerly known as the Primrose gold project, recently underwent in-house and independent reviews of its gold mineralisation controls. The review exposed gaps in the resource block model and opened-up the project’s Blue Heaven prospect for additional, potentially close-to-surface resource expansion. Reach says in addition to upcoming drill results, it plans to undertake metallurgical testing to assess the deposit’s processing potential, technical analysis to support pit design optimisations before further negotiations with mining contractors and nearby processing facilities. Several gold mills are within trucking distance of the project, providing Reach with the opportunity to monetise its asset at today’s roaring gold price. As the company awaits further assays, the strong early results at Blue Heaven indicate Reach could be sitting on a significantly expanded gold resource that might soon be monetised in a more than 15-million-ounce gold region which has the market absolutely humming. Perth Hills: Residents report ‘tornado’ hits suburbs as firefighters respond to fallen trees, powerlines Perth Hills: Residents report ‘tornado’ hits suburbs as firefighters respond to fallen trees, powerlines Thousands are without power in the Perth Hills amid reports of a sudden severe storm uprooting trees, fallen powerlines and tornado-like winds sending debris flying. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services issued a storm watch and act alert on Wednesday night after the Bureau of Meteorology detected damaging winds northeast of Bullsbrook about 5.40pm. “This thunderstorm is moving towards the south,” the alert said. “It is forecast to affect Gidgegannup and Wooroloo by 6:10 pm and Mount Helena, Sawyers Valley and The Lakes by 6:40 pm.” There has already been reports of trees falling either on or near properties. It is understood more than four separate powerlines are down. Residents are urged to stay indoors as debris or fallen powerlines could pose serious harm. Firefighters are working with Western Power to ensure the area is safe. “There remains a possible threat to lives and property and it is important to be aware of potential hazards that may remain after the storm has passed,” the alert said. ‘We need to take what action we can’ ‘We need to take what action we can’ Former farmland on England’s eastern coast is being rewilded to welcome a wide array of flora and fauna. The BBC reported that all 289 acres of Martlesham Wilds Nature Reserve were an organic farm a few years ago. Today, it’s owned by Suffolk Wildlife Trust, a charity dedicated to helping nature flourish. The organization purchased the land in 2023, and rewilding efforts are fully underway. Martlesham Wilds sits beside the Deben Estuary in Suffolk. It’s home to many habitats, such as grazing marshes, salt marshes, woodlands, and reedbeds. As the land returns to its natural state, several species have made homes there. SWT introduced Herdwick sheep and Belted Galloway cattle to the grazing marsh. These animals will improve the plant diversity and invite more critters. Creatures like wading birds, wildfowl, and woodlarks can thrive surrounded by this diverse flora. Jessica Ratcliff, the reserve’s warden, highlighted the beauty and importance of encouraging biodiversity. She told BBC, “It’s such a lovely diversity of habitat, providing the connectivity that’s so important when restoring habitats.” Without biodiversity, humans and most other species would not survive. The human population relies heavily on pollinators, small creatures that are responsible for reproducing numerous food crops and flowering plants. Watch now: Rare anteater sighting sparks hope for wildlife in South America Preserving natural wetlands and grasslands also reduces flooding, protecting homes from water damage. Pollution, deforestation, expanding agriculture, and other manmade problems threaten biodiversity. However, conservation and rewilding efforts can counteract species decline. Ratcliff told the BBC that there’s a “decline across the board in terms of birds, insects, and mammals,” adding that “we are seeing precipitous declines, an average of 70% across insect species.” She explained the ramifications: “This could be catastrophic, so we need to take what action we can and bolster populations to give them safe havens and stop decline becoming extinction.” Luckily, places like Martlesham Wilds only need a little nudge. Michael Strand from SWT explained that they want to intervene as little as possible. “We’re allowing nature to show what it wants to be in whatever place,” he said. 3 Stocks for a Value Portfolio: Undervalued Gems to Watch
Pelican Press posted a topic in World News
3 Stocks for a Value Portfolio: Undervalued Gems to Watch 3 Stocks for a Value Portfolio: Undervalued Gems to Watch It has become clear to investors who know what to look for that value stocks are about to be the end game for 2025, especially considering all of the volatility breakouts that have come up over the past couple of weeks. These range from economic data surprises like inflation to new trade tariff announcements from President Trump and just broader rotations inside the and indexes. With this in mind, investors typically go into two places during volatile times like these: value stocks or consumer staples’ names for their safety and low volatility. Today, investors should go deeper than defensive names since this time around, the risk-to-reward looks fantastic for undervalued stocks that still carry enough fundamental reasons to get them to higher prices ahead. Names like Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:), a chipmaker who has missed out on most of the artificial intelligence run in the technology sector, or energy drink maker Celsius Holdings (NASDAQ:), and even ******** commerce and technology giant Alibaba (NYSE:) all carry these same characteristics of having priced in some of the worst-case scenarios, leaving nothing but upside for savvy value investors. Why Investors Might Consider Advanced Micro Devices Stock’s Recent Dip After reporting earnings on the first week of February 2025, shares of Advanced Micro Devices shed over 8% in value overnight, a response from the market that left most investors wondering whether it was truly justified. The reason is that, despite this sell-off, the company actually reported good figures and growth across the board. The problem is that this growth seems very small and bearish next to the bloated projections and performance that investors have gotten used to coming from other names like NVIDIA (NASDAQ:). So even a great quarter for Advanced Micro Devices is still seen as a relatively negative thing next to figures coming from peers. With this in mind, investors can start to see how this is a matter of perception and potential greed, which is why the current $158.7 consensus price target on Advanced Micro Devices stock matters all the more today, one that calls for up to 44% upside from where it trades today. Another form of support investors can find when considering a potential buy in this name is the fact that institutional buyers from the Vanguard Group decided to boost their holdings in Advanced Micro Devices stock by 1% as of February 2025. While this may not sound like much on a percentage basis, it brought their position up to $18.1 billion. The Worst Is in the Past for Celsius Stock After a grueling 20% decline over the past month alone, it is safe for investors to assume that the worst for Celsius stock might be behind it. The reason is that, now that Celsius trades at a forward P/E ratio of only 25.2x, it is the lowest valuation the company has seen in its history since being public. More than that, as the stock reached a low of only 22% of its 52-week high, there is nothing but upside to be had in this stock from here. This is the one theme that Wall Street analysts are focused on today when publishing their ratings for Celsius. As of February 2025, the consensus valuation for Celsius is $47.6 per share, calling for up to 123% upside from today’s low price. As bullish as this may seem, however, it doesn’t even get close to the stock’s 52-week high of $99 per share. This way, investors can see just how high the ceiling is for the company compared to the potential downside. This view would also explain why Vanguard decided to plunge into this stock, adding 2.2% to its holdings as of February 2025, bringing its net position to a high of $416.5 million today, or 6.7% ownership in the company. Alibaba: The Most Important Stock in China That’s Alibaba, and while it has already reached a new 52-week high, there are plenty of reasons to believe that the ceiling is much higher than today’s prices. One reason is the strong investor confidence in this company, with both David Tepper and Michael Burry making it the largest holding in their portfolios. More than that, ******** technology stocks, measured by the KraneShares CSI China Internet ETF (NYSE:), have severely underperformed American technology stocks, leaving investors with a wide gap to be filled in terms of performance and valuations. Ultimately, investors can gauge just how bullish the tailwinds behind Alibaba are by looking at the $25 billion stock buyback program approved and implemented by management. If insiders are this optimistic about the company’s future, enough to buy back over 10% of its market capitalization, then there’s got to be a strong reason why. Knowing that the all-time highs for Alibaba are over $300 per share, today’s price seems minuscule compared to how much upside there’s really left in the stock, despite recent rallies to new 52-week highs. Jonathan Bailey’s new character ‘Succession inspired’ Jonathan Bailey’s new character ‘Succession inspired’ Yasmin Rufo Entertainment reporter Manuel Harlan Bailey’s performance of Richard II has been positively received by most critics From playing Anthony in Bridgerton to Fiyero in Wicked, Jonathan Bailey has nailed the art of portraying regal characters. The trend continues as he now takes on the role of Shakespeare’s Richard II at the Bridge Theatre in London. He tells the BBC that his portrayal of the authoritarian king who ruled in the 1300s was inspired by HBO’s Succession, which explores the power struggle between the children of media mogul Logan Roy. “I channelled many Roys,” Bailey explains, adding that Richard II “explores inherited power in a very similar way to Succession but also expands on it and takes it to a new level”. The first of Shakespeare’s history plays, Richard II sees the unlikeable and corrupt king be usurped by his cousin Henry Bolingbroke who goes on to become Henry IV. Directed by Nicholas Hytner, the modern-dress production sees Bailey as a ********-snorting and camp king. The 36-year-old said he chose to take on the role of Richard II as there was “so much to explore with his character”. “It’s a feast of a play and really speaks to our times – it’s fascinating to explore a king who has a cast iron right to rule.” ‘Commands the stage’ Bailey’s performance has been positively received by most critics. The Guardian’s three star review said his “words glitter with feeling” and added that he “singularly shines, his luminosity putting the others slightly in the shade”. The Evening Standard’s review added that Bailey “commands the stage and even allows a little camp to seep into the character” while the Independent said, in a four-star review, that Bailey has “an infectious spirit of camp naughtiness, he hugs his crown like a teddy bear, aims wry put-downs at dull courtiers, and bosses his court around like they’re actors in a play”. However, in a three-star review, Dominic Cavendish from the Telegraph suggestedthat Bailey “doesn’t attain the greatness of Ben Whishaw and David Tennant”. There was also praise for some of the other actors, notably Michael Simkins. The Times said his Duke of York is “stateliness personified”, but also awarded three stars overall. The New York Times also commended Simkins: “His finger-wagging exasperation, verging at times on slapstick, gives an audience-friendly commentary on the unfolding intrigue.” Manuel Harlan Simkins was highly praised for his role as the Duke of York Newer fans of Bailey may not realise that he is first and foremost a theatre actor. In 2013, he played Cassio in Hytner’s Othello at the National Theatre and has also performed alongside Ian McKellen in King Lear. Productions of Shakespeare’s plays rarely have a large audience of young women, but Bailey’s appeal among that demographic seems to have inspired them to visit the theatre. “It makes me so happy to inspire a new generation of young people coming to the theatre,” he says. “If 10 people per show come and see Shakespeare for the first time then I’m doing something right.” Source link #Jonathan #Baileys #character #Succession #inspired Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Looking for Gemini on iOS? It’s now only in Google’s dedicated Gemini app – complete with the new research mode for subscribers Looking for Gemini on iOS? It’s now only in Google’s dedicated Gemini app – complete with the new research mode for subscribers Gemini is no longer available in the Google app on iOS You’ll now only find Google AI in its own dedicated Gemini app Gemini is free to download via the App Store If you’re looking to use Google Gemini on iOS you’ll find that, as of today, it’s no longer accessible through the Google app, where it has lived since its launch on iPhone. Instead, if you don’t already have it, you’ll need to download the dedicated Gemini app on the App Store to use Google’s AI chatbot on the best iPhones and take advantage of everything it has to offer. Gemini’s new 2.0 Flash model goes head to head with ChatGPT, and it’s a seriously impressive chatbot that can help you organize your life, create AI images, and even access Gemini Live, one of the most impressive AI voice assistants we’ve tested so far. 2.0 Flash isn’t the only new Gemini addition for 2025, with Google announcing that Deep Research, its research model that can analyze and create reports similar to ChatGPT Deep Research, is also now available on iOS. While Gemini is free to download from the App Store, you can subscribe to Gemini Advanced for more features via an in-app purchase which costs $18.99 / £18.99 / roughly AU$30. With Gemini Advanced you can take advantage of the aforementioned Deep Research, as well as Gemini integration with other Google apps such as Search, YouTube, Maps, Gmail, just to name a few. The best place for Gemini I’ve been using the Gemini app since it launched in November last year, and it’s been excellent. Removing the AI chatbot from the Google search app will make it less convoluted for people to access Google AI, as before the launch of the Gemini app it was often overshadowed, hidden in plain sight. Gemini is a well-designed app with everything Google AI has to offer, and thanks to the AI options offered by the iPhone 16’s Action button you can seamlessly integrate it into your life instead of, or alongside, Apple’s first-party tools. Gemini might be ruling the roost alongside ChatGPT as the best AI chatbot on iPhone at the time of writing, but Apple Intelligence will give Siri a major upgrade in iOS 18.4 set to launch in the next few months. Siri’s major upgrade will bring personal context and on-screen awareness to Apple’s voice assistant which should make it more approachable and beneficial to users. Until then, Gemini is one of the best chatbots for AI right now – you may just need to download a new app in order to access it from now on. Which companies will win the AI race? One VC shares his take. Which companies will win the AI race? One VC shares his take. Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being used by companies not just for cost-cutting, but also as a way to drive new revenue streams. Premium AI services, such as OpenAI’s subscription models, reflect the growing costs of delivering such technologies. Lead Edge Capital founder Mitchell Green explains to Catalysts hosts Seana Smith and Madison Mills “the costs of providing the service are much more expensive than your typical search.” Green predicts that dominant players will emerge, as companies like Apple (AAPL), Amazon (AMZN), and Google (GOOGL, GOOG) did with the iPhone. Green highlights that businesses like Genesis in the call center space and software company Grafana Labs in developer tools are likely to utilize AI more. “They’re all going to embed AI inside their systems and leverage their existing customers to continue to grow faster and faster,” Green says. Spacewalk training ‘nothing like diving’ Spacewalk training ‘nothing like diving’ Barry O’Connor BBC News NI Getty Images Northern Irish astrophysicist Dr Rosemary Coogan completed basic training with the European Space Agency last year Dr Rosemary Coogan – Northern Ireland’s first ever astronaut – has said the space sector is “very much changing in terms of having more and more commercial partners”. The astrophysicist, who was speaking to BBC News NI, is currently in the US for pre-assignment training and is undergoing rigorous spacewalk training. Last year, Dr Coogan completed basic training with the European Space Agency and received her graduation certificate at a special ceremony in Cologne in Germany. On Wednesday, she will be discussing her work at the Northern Ireland Science Festival, where she is hoping to inspire the next generation of scientists to pursue a career in the industry. ‘Learning to do spacewalks’Getty Images Astronauts undertake rigorous underwater training Dr Coogan’s pre-assignment training will last six months and she described her current spacewalk training as “really exciting”. It happens underwater in a giant pool, complete with a spacesuit and a mock-up of the space station, she explained. “I absolutely love the water, but it feels nothing like diving,” said Dr Coogan. “Of course we have a lot of the same constraints in terms of safety underwater, decompression considerations. “But in a spacesuit you can’t swim, in space there is nothing to push against. “It’s physically hard work,” she said, adding it seems ironic that a ‘spacewalk’ is mostly achieved through upper arm work. ‘Space is really developing’ The landing of the first commercial spacecraft on the Moon last year sparked excitement about a new age of possibilities in the Solar System. Several months later, SpaceX’s Polaris Dawn crew returned to Earth after five days in orbit, following a historic mission featuring the world’s first commercial spacewalk. The US space agency Nasa said the mission represented “a giant leap forward” for the commercial space industry. Speaking to BBC Radio Ulster’s Good Morning Ulster programme from the Johnson Space Centre in Houston, Texas, USA, Dr Coogan said the space industry is “very much changing”. “Of course, there is a need for a huge amount of people who need to be regulating what we do and why, both government and commercial,” she said. “There are benefits to having that commercial side, we now are going up to the International Space Station in commercial vehicles and, without that, it’s difficult to say where we would be.” Getty Images Dr Coogan follows in the footsteps of Tim Peake – the ***’s first ever Esa astronaut Work in space for the ‘benefit of Earth’ Dr Coogan emphasised the science being conducted in space is “very, very important”. “[It] cannot really be replaced in any other context. That’s why I do this job.” She pointed out that while exciting experiments are happening in micro-gravity environments on Earth, these can only last for a brief *******. “Removing that gravity element is completely irreplaceable,” she said. Dr Coogan added that as space is used more for various purposes, it’s crucial to protect both the space environment and the Earth’s environment. “What we do in space really is for the benefit of Earth,” she added. Regarding satellites, she mentioned that while they play a role in Earth research, scientists must also consider the issue of space debris. “When we send these new technologies into space it is very much a push now to have an end-of-life plan for the satellite,” she said. “How is it going to be de-orbited or send into a higher orbit where it is out of harms way?” Getty Images Dr Coogan is completing pre-assignment training at the Johnson Space Centre in Houston, Texas On Wednesday, Dr Coogan will be speaking to the NI Space Office about her journey as part of the Northern Ireland Science Festival. “There is a real pull to say yes to these events, particularly when you are engaging with young people,” she said. “School children wrote in and recorded their questions, it is fascinating for me to see what young people are interested in and try my best to give them answers. “Every now and then there will be a question you’ll have never imagined before.” Source link #Spacewalk #training #diving Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Nvidia to consume 77% of wafers used for AI processors in 2025: Report Nvidia to consume 77% of wafers used for AI processors in 2025: Report Over the past few years, we have seen a lot of AI-market-related metrics, starting from petaflops of performance and going all the way up to gigawatts of power consumption. A rather unexpected metric is perhaps the one from Morgan Stanley (via @Jukanlosreve) that counts the wafer consumption of AI processors. There are no surprises, though: Nvidia controls the lion’s share of wafers designated for AI and is set to increase its domination in 2025 as it chews through up to 77% of the world’s supply of wafers destined for AI applications. While Nvidia is operating at an unprecedented scale and continues ramping up production dramatically, AMD’s share of AI wafer usage will actually decline next year. The figures also cover other industry heavyweights like AWS, Google, Tesla, Microsoft, and ******** vendors. Morgan Stanley’s analysis is the best in the industry. It’s data you won’t find anywhere else… pic.twitter.com/FhGwaf2Ux6February 8, 2025 If you expand the above tweet, you can see that Morgan Stanley predicts that Nvidia will dominate AI semiconductor wafer consumption in 2025, increasing its share from 51% in 2024 to 77% in 2025 while consuming 535,000 300-mm wafers. AI-specific processors, such as Google TPU v6 and AWS Trainium, are gaining traction but remain far behind Nvidia’s GPUs. As such, AWS’s share is set to fall from 10% to 7%, while Google’s share is projected to fall from 19% to 10%. Google allocates 85,000 wafers to TPU v6, while AWS dedicates 30,000 to Trainium 2 and 16,000 to Trainium 3, according to Morgan Stanley’s projections. As for AMD, its share is expected to drop from 9% to 3% as its MI300, MI325, and MI355 GPUs — the company’s main offerings — have wafer allocations ranging from 5,000 to 25,000 wafers. Notably, this doesn’t mean that AMD will consume fewer wafers next year, just that its percentage of the overall share will decline. Intel’s Gaudi 3 processors (named Habana in the graph) will remain around 1%. Tesla, Microsoft, and ******** vendors hold minimal shares. This may not be a problem, though. Tesla’s Dojo and FSD processors have limited wafer demand, which reflects their niche role in AI computing. Microsoft’s Maia 200 and its enhanced version have similarly small wafer allocations because these chips remain secondary for the company as it continues to use Nvidia’s GPUs for training and inference. What the published graph does not indicate is whether Nvidia’s dominance stems from the massive demand expected in 2025 or the fact that the company booked more TSMC logic and TSMC CoWoS capacity than everyone else. The total AI market is projected to reach 688,000 wafers, and the estimated value is said to be $14.57 billion. This projection could be an underestimation, though. TSMC earned $64.93 billion in 2024, and 51% (over $32 billion) of it came from segments that the foundry calls high-performance computing (HPC). Technically, HPC includes everything from AI GPUs to processors for client PCs (smartphones are another category, and it accounted for 35% of TSMC’s revenue in 2024) to game consoles. However, AI GPUs and data center CPUs account for a lion’s share of that HPC revenue of $32 billion. The largest contributor to the growth of the wafers consumed by AI processors is Nvidia’s B200 GPU, which is expected to require 220,000 wafers, generating $5.84 billion in revenue, according to Morgan Stanley projections. Other Nvidia GPUs for AI, including the H100, H200, and B300, add to its dominance. All of these products use TSMC’s 4nm-class process technologies, and their compute die sizes range from 814 mm^2 to 850 mm^2, which explains the vast wafer demand. Trump Just Publicly Abandoned 1 Of His Biggest ‘Day One’ Promises Trump Just Publicly Abandoned 1 Of His Biggest ‘Day One’ Promises President Donald Trump this week admitted that prices are rising ― but insisted that it’s not his fault despite repeatedly claiming he would bring prices down on his first day in office. “Inflation is back,” he told Fox News host Sean Hannity in an interview that aired on Tuesday night. “I’m only here for two and a half weeks… I had nothing to do with it.” The consumer price index jumped by 3% in January compared to January 2024, according to the Labor Department, a number higher than most analysts expected. Trump immediately blamed former President Joe Biden despite previously claiming he’d stop inflation within hours of taking office on Jan. 20. “I will immediately bring prices down starting on day one,” he said on August 15, according to video resurfaced by progressive media outlet MeidasTouch, which also found him saying two days later: “Starting the day I take the oath of office, I will rapidly drive prices down.” Trump has said it at other points, too, including a claim last summer that “starting on day one, we will end inflation and make America affordable again.” Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas) has been keeping a list of numerous other times Trump made similar promises. Once in office, however, Trump quickly backed off the notion that he’d be able to immediately cut inflation and improve the economy and has also admitted that his plan to impose tariffs on other nations could lead to “short-term a little pain” for American consumers. And when Hannity tried to bring up the economy during a previous interview, Trump didn’t want to talk about it at all. “Let me get to the economy,” Hannity said during the interview shortly after Trump took office. “I’m running out of time.” “I don’t care,” Trump fired back as he went on a lengthy rant against Biden. “This is more important.” Voters, however, don’t seem to agree. Last week, CNN data reporter Harry Enten said new polls found that a majority of Americans want Trump to focus on inflation or the economy in general, but two-thirds say he hasn’t done so. And that, he predicted, could cause Trump’s approval ratings to take a dive. “Let me be perfectly clear: Inflation crushed the Joe Biden presidency, it ate it alive,” Enten said. “If Donald Trump is not careful, inflation will crush his presidency and eat it alive.” Source link #Trump #Publicly #Abandoned #Biggest #Day #Promises Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

CyberArk shares can rally more than 20% as identity security market evolves, BofA says CyberArk shares can rally more than 20% as identity security market evolves, BofA says Bank of America sees more room for CyberArk shares to run. Analyst Madeline Brooks hiked her price target on the cybersecurity stock by $145 to $500. The updated target from Brooks, who has a buy rating, suggests shares can rally 22% from Tuesday’s close. With that increase, Brooks appears to be tied for the highest price target among analysts covering CyberArk, according to LSEG. “The Identity Security market is evolving from a collection of fragmented point products to a foundational pillar in cybersecurity,” Brooks wrote in a Tuesday note to clients. “We believe CyberArk is well positioned to capture the opportunity given the breadth and depth of its offering across human and machine identities.” Brooks went onto describe machine identity within identity security being at a “key inflection point” within the market. She said that CyberArk should be able to grow its Venafi business by 20% or more this year. More broadly, the analyst said CyberArk’s metrics show “continued execution on all fronts.” She also described the company’s core business as “strong.” U.S.-listed shares of the Israeli company ticked 0.2% higher before the bell on Wednesday. Shares have climbed 23% in 2025, extending last year’s rally of more than 52%. Kiwi Liam Lawson enters lion’s den in F1 with a smile Kiwi Liam Lawson enters lion’s den in F1 with a smile Liam Lawson has one of the toughest gigs in Formula One as teammate to Max Verstappen but while the 23-year-old New Zealander could be in for a beating, he also expects to learn fast this season. Verstappen has won four titles in a row with Red Bull and has a reputation, as one reporter put it to Lawson ahead of Tuesday’s F1 launch extravaganza in London, of being a “teammate eater”. Lawson is the first teammate Verstappen, 27, has had younger than him but is starting his first full season and has yet to finish higher than ninth in 11 starts for sister team RB. Six months ago, he was not even sure of having a seat in F1. Carlos Sainz, *********** Daniel Ricciardo, Pierre Gasly, Alex Albon and most recently Sergio Perez have all tried to live with the Dutch driver’s brilliance and fallen short. “It’s a great opportunity, the biggest opportunity I’ve ever had,” Lawson told reporters. “I think it just depends on how you look at it. “Max is extremely successful in the sport but coming in knowing the team’s goal of winning the constructors’ (title) and getting back on top, that’s really what I’m here to help achieve. “And if we’re doing that, I know that I’m doing my job.” While Verstappen retained his drivers’ crown, Red Bull lost theirs to McLaren last season – a result largely of ******** Perez’s shocking collapse in form. Lawson will be expected to be a more consistent number two, supporting Verstappen and banking the points needed for the constructors’ championship while learning unfamiliar tracks. “As fast as Max is, I get access to everything he’s doing so from a learning opportunity it’s also massive,” said the Kiwi. “There’s really nobody better to learn off than him.” “I don’t expect to come in and be the best,” he added. “Obviously we all believe that we are the best. In any top level sport you can’t go into a match or a game and think that the person (against you) could be better than you. “We all believe we are, and I do, but going up against guys who have done eight or nine seasons of Formula One … I don’t expect to come in and beat somebody like that off the bat. “For me it’s about progressing towards that goal of winning. I definitely have enough of that self-belief.” The season starts on March 16 in Melbourne, the closest thing Lawson has to a home race. “Hopefully the Australians don’t hate me too much,” he smiled. “It’s a really cool track. I did four laps in a V8 Supercar around it last year and it was pretty fun.” Source link #Kiwi #Liam #Lawson #enters #lions #den #smile Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Florida State research cracks the case on shrimp swap scandal Florida State research cracks the case on shrimp swap scandal When it comes to seafood, people want the real deal – not some fishy bait-and-switch. But in the billion-dollar shrimp industry, it turns out diners might not be getting what they paid for: Eateries offering imported shrimp disguised as locally caught delicacies. David Williams, founder of Houston-based food safety tech company SeaD Consulting, has spent years diving into the murky waters of seafood sourcing. His team’s research kept surfacing the same troubling question: Do consumers really know where their shrimp come from? “Why would you want to be lied to?” Williams said. After all, no one orders a plate of shrimp expecting a side of deception. Here’s why it matters: The seafood industry is swimming with imported shrimp, often from farms abroad that may use antibiotics and questionable practices banned here in the states. But restaurants aren’t always upfront about what they’re serving (sometimes even they don’t know), leaving diners in the dark about what’s really on their plates. And it takes business away from U.S. shrimpers. So in 2022, Williams took his concerns to Florida State University assistant professor Prashant Singh, hoping to crack the case of the sneaky shrimp swap. Singh was intrigued. “There is this saying, ‘don’t look for a great idea. Look for one great problem to solve.’ SeaD Consulting gave me a problem to solve,” Singh said, explaining why the proposal was accepted. With the help of SeaD Consulting researchers and Florida State University’s Department of Nutrition and Integrative Physiology graduate students Samuel Kwawukume and Frank Velez, as well as assistant professor for health, nutrition and food science Leqi Cui, Singh took on the challenge. Dr. Prashant Singh, a food and safety microbiologist at Florida State University, describes the test his students use to determine if shrimp is domestic or imported Monday, Feb. 10, 2025. Singh, a food safety microbiologist who obtained his doctorate in food science from the University of Missouri, has an extensive background in researching dairy, poultry and beef. Researching seafood was a new area of exploration for him. “One day I suddenly realized I’ve got the ocean,” he jokingly said upon moving to the Sunshine State in 2018, providing him a natural laboratory to expand his research focus. Here was the challenge Williams is a commercial fishery scientist and has decades of experience under his belt. After speaking with fishermen working on the Gulf Coast, he realized the shrimp market was in jeopardy. He identified the dilemma as an “authenticity-in-the-restaurant problem,” when he found the local “shrimp business was unable to support itself” because people were making substitutions by importing to save dollars on food supply. This ignited a research campaign funded by the nonprofit organization called Southern Shrimp Alliance. The group is made of fishermen, processors and other members of the domestic shrimp industry. In an interview with the Tallahassee Democrat in FSU’s Sandels Building, Singh, Kwawukume and graduate teaching assistant Nethraja Kandula, demonstrated how their shrimp authenticity test – which has created ripples in the restaurant scene – was conducted. Florida State University graduate students test a variety of shrimp to determine if it is domestic or imported Monday, Feb. 10, 2025. Tall refrigerators positioned on the side of the laboratory located inside the building on Convocation Way were filled with hundreds of samples. Glass cylinders with colorful chemicals and testing tubes with labels sat on the counters and shelves next to testing devices. This testing site sparked national conversations about the quality of shrimp falsely marketed to consumers on a day-to-day basis. Taking a refrigerated bag of deep-fried shrimp pulled from restaurants, they took the crustaceans and peeled the crispy layers exposing the white meat to pick out a piece of flesh. This one piece of tissue, almost as fine as a strand of hair, was all they needed. “The test is designed to identify a DNA sequence,” he said. “So, we just run the same test using all the samples.” A portable Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) machine helps the scientists identify the difference between domestic species of shrimp and imported species of shrimp. Florida State University graduate students test a variety of shrimp to determine if it is domestic or imported Monday, Feb. 10, 2025. “We take a tiny piece of shrimp tissue with a disposable toothpick, which is used for DNA isolation by boiling the samples in lysis buffer (a solution that helps to open cells and release their contents).” That’s then used to create a reaction and identify the presence of substances in the liquid sample. After two years of research, the findings were presented at conferences, including a gathering in August 2024 with people who study and monitor the shrimp industry. Singh informed attendees about the mislabeled shrimp products they were consuming by presenting his research. But after sharing his studies to groups about the fraudulent label, many were shocked, but it didn’t spark a lasting impression that the team was looking for. “Nobody cared initially,” he admitted after guests failed to follow up on what could be done to address the misrepresentation. SeaD Consulting realized that stating facts just wasn’t enough to provoke change. The only way to create and maintain sustainable conversations was to essentially create “chaos.” After licensing the FSU instruments for testing, Williams was hired by the Southern Shrimp Alliance to visit restaurants. He was initially visiting seafood festivals in major cities and found that a majority of the shrimp featured was imported, even though it was implied to be locally sourced. That is when he was asked to visit restaurants. Assistant professor Prashant Singh displayed his findings on imported versus domestic shrimp at a conference he attended in August 2024. Williams went undercover at restaurants and ordered shrimp dishes to collect samples for rapid testing, taking in a number of factors like décor and menu wording to determine if “deceptive advertising” was at play. “The implication that the customer perceives is the fact that it is domestic shrimp,” he said referring to how a restaurant’s ambience can create a false sense of authenticity. After Williams and Singh tested samples from a number of restaurants across the Southeast, they found that in major cities like New Orleans, 21 out of 24 restaurants passed the authenticity test. Tampa failed, with a majority of its restaurants actually offering imported shrimp on their menus, a prime example of the deception Williams mentioned. These region-based findings were shared with news outlets, notifying consumers across the nation that they may be getting bamboozled. Restaurants that failed the testing received letters from SeaD Consulting advising them to correct the false advertising, while those confirmed to sell domestic shrimp were named in the articles with praises. Restaurants that fail to comply with the guidance will have their names reported to news outlets as the consulting organization continues its research to support the sustainability of U.S. shrimpers and hold restauranteurs accountable for consumer transparency. Florida State University graduate students test a variety of shrimp to determine if it is domestic or imported Monday, Feb. 10, 2025. Legislators in states like Louisiana have already created laws or regulations to correct these behaviors and protect local shrimpers. Florida legislators, who are preparing to start legislative session in March, have not filed any bills to address these concerns, based on a recent review, though Williams has not actively lobbied for them to do so. Singh believes the practice of offering cheaper substitutes for locally-sourced items doesn’t end with shrimp. He believes that other product like grouper and snapper may be in the same boat, raising more questions about the accuracy of menu labels. Singh has reached out to other food industries to see how further research can begin. “I feel happy. It’s like my research paid off,” Singh said. “Reaching out and touching the life of those people. I don’t want anything else but to support the local economy.” Kyla A Sanford covers dining and entertainment for the Tallahassee Democrat. Measles outbreak grows ******* in rural Texas, and officials expect more cases Measles outbreak grows ******* in rural Texas, and officials expect more cases A vial of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is pictured at the International Community Health Services clinic in Seattle, Washington. Lindsey Wasson | Reuters At least 58 new cases of measles have been reported across northwest Texas in recent weeks, state health officials said Tuesday, in a “highly contagious” outbreak that might be linked to lack of vaccination. A bulk of these new cases in rural northwest Texas are in Gaines County with 45 documented incidents of the disease, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services. In the last three weeks, nine cases have come from Terry County, two from Yoakum County and one each from Lubbock and Lynn Counties, according to the state. At least four patients had been vaccinated, but the “rest are unvaccinated, or their vaccination status is unknown,” the health department said. Most of the infections are in school-age kids, and 13 have been hospitalized. More cases are expected. “Due to the highly contagious nature of this disease, additional cases are likely to occur in Gaines County and the surrounding communities,” according to the state health officials. “DSHS is working with South Plains Public Health District and Lubbock Public Health to investigate the outbreak.” The Republican-controlled U.S. Senate last week confirmed long-time vaccine skeptic Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to lead the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. He’s been particularly critical of the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, vaccines, which he’s baselessly linked to autism. A rep for the U.S. Health Department could not be immediately reached for comment on Tuesday. U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy, a physician from Texas’ eastern neighbor of Louisiana, urged Texans to get the measles vaccine that’s “been proven safe & effective since 1963.” Cassidy’s statement on Tuesday was then predictably mocked by some online who pointed out that he provided a key vote in favor of Kennedy’s confirmation.
