Pokémon Go’s Future Is in Saudi Arabia’s Hands as Savvy Group Looks to Acquire Niantic’s Gaming Unit
Pokémon Go’s Future Is in Saudi Arabia’s Hands as Savvy Group Looks to Acquire Niantic’s Gaming Unit
Pokémon Go is the most successful augmented reality game since its launch in 2016, and it seems a big change is in the cards for the game. Niantic Inc., the game’s developer, is reportedly in advanced talks to sell its gaming division to Saudi-owned Scopely Inc. for a whopping $3.5 billion. The deal is not yet finalized so take it with a grain of salt. And maybe pray.
Niantic has been anything but perfect, but now it can get worse? | Image Credit: Niantic Inc.
If the acquisition goes through, Pokémon Go and other Niantic titles like Ingress and Monster Hunter Now will be under Scopely’s control. As you’d expect, the majority of the community is already preparing for the worst as the fate of the game might be changing hands.
Pokémon Go could be changing hands to a new owner
We’ve seen these moves before. | Image Credit: Scopely Inc.
Niantic was originally a Google subsidiary that became independent in 2015. At the time, Google probably didn’t think anything of it. But Niantic went on to strike gold with Pokémon Go in 2016 and the game has since been the most profitable augmented reality (AR) game ever. So why is it now being reported (via Bloomberg) that the company’s gaming division could be sold to Saudia Arabia-backed Scopely Inc.?
Well, first of all, there’s the fact that replicating the success of Pokémon Go has been challenging. You see the biggest reason why it worked was because of how compatible a franchise like Pokémon is with the concept of a real-time, location-based augmented reality game. And it’s not to say that Niantic hasn’t tried to make similar games.
Bloomberg: Niantic Inc. is in talks to sell its video-game business to Saudi Arabia-controlled Scopely Inc. for about $3.5 billion. Deal could be announced in coming weeks.
Any agreement would involve Pokémon Go as well as other mobile games pic.twitter.com/YPqQblHDTC
— Wario64 (@Wario64) February 19, 2025
The company has faced setbacks, including the shutdown of its Harry Potter: Wizards Unite game in 2022 and staff layoffs in 2023. With the AR market developing slower than anticipated, Niantic has been restructuring its business, making the ***** of its gaming division a strategic move to focus on its geospatial data projects.

Scopely Inc. is the company poised to take over Niantic’s gaming assets and is itself a major mobile game publisher that was acquired by Saudi Arabia’s Savvy Games Group in 2023 for $4.9 billion. The initial responses from players and the community have been mostly negative. Players are criticizing Scopely’s monetary practices and of course, the Saudi involvement.
What is the future of gaming with big moves like this?
And what is the future of Pokémon Go? | Image Credit: Niantic Inc.
Over the last few years, Saudi Arabia has been expanding its footprint in the gaming industry using its Public Investment Fund (PIF) to acquire stakes in major gaming companies. The community hasn’t been quiet about it if you look at the backlash that several developers have faced for aligning with this agenda. The Esports World Cup is a great example of this. But we’re not here to talk controversies.
Savvy Games Group is a subsidiary of PIF that acquired Scopely in 2023 for $4.9 billion as part of this strategy. With Niantic’s potential *****, Saudi Arabia would gain control over Pokémon Go, Pikmin Bloom, and other Niantic titles. It’s a really big move and one that we should expect considering Savvy CEO Brian Ward’s previous statement to Bloomberg about having a “genre-leading” mobile title.
Another key factor in this deal is the involvement of The Pokémon Company. While Niantic developed Pokémon Go, the Pokémon franchise is co-owned by Nintendo, Game Freak, and Creatures Inc. It’s unclear how much control The Pokémon Company would have over any changes Scopely might implement.

Chicago emergency room doctor stabbed in chest by patient, police say
The Brief
Two staff members at Provident Hospital were injured by a patient in the emergency department on Monday.
One of the victims, an ER doctor, was stabbed in the chest and taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center.
The suspect was taken into custody, and an investigation is underway by Chicago Police.
CHICAGO – Two staff members were injured by a patient in the emergency department at Provident Hospital on Monday afternoon, including an emergency room doctor who was stabbed in the chest.
The incident occurred around 1:01 p.m. in the 500 block of E. 51st St., which is where the hospital is located, on the city’s South Side.
What we know
Provident Hospital confirmed that two staff members were injured and both are in stable condition.
One of the victims, confirmed by FOX 32 to be an emergency room doctor, was stabbed in the chest and transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where they were listed in fair condition.
According to Chicago police, the suspect approached the 56-year-old ER doctor with a sharp object and stabbed him in the chest. The offender was immediately taken into custody, and Area Detectives are conducting an investigation into the incident.
The reason the doctor was transported to UC from Provident is because Provident is not a trauma center, FOX 32 has learned.
What we don’t know
Details about the second injured staff member, including their role at the hospital and the extent of their injuries, have not been disclosed.
Provident Hospital stated they would not release further information out of respect for both staff members’ privacy.
The motive behind the attack is also unclear at this time.
What they’re saying
Provident Hospital released the following statement:
“Violence against healthcare workers is on the rise, and it is unacceptable. No one should have to fear for their safety while doing their job. This issue transcends physical harm—it impacts the emotional and psychological well-being of our entire team, and ultimately affects the quality of care we are able to provide. While we remain committed to providing the best care possible to our patients, we must also acknowledge that health care environments should be safe spaces for both patients and providers.”
What’s next
The investigation by CPD into the incident is ongoing.

Cash reward for mosquitoes to beat dengue in Manila

A Philippine urban centre hopes a mosquito bounty will supplement existing anti-dengue measures
Authorities in one of the Philippines’ most densely-populated urban centres are offering a cash reward for mosquitoes in an attempt to stop the spread of dengue.
Carlito Cernal, village chief of Barangay Addition Hills, announced the bounty of one peso (less than 2 US cents) for every five mosquitoes after two students in his neighbourhood died from the disease.
Cernal said the bounty was meant to supplement existing measures such as cleaning the streets and preventing the build-up of water where dengue-carrying mosquitoes lay their eggs.
The reward applies to live and dead mosquitoes and their larvae, Cernal added. Live mosquitoes will be exterminated using ultraviolet light.
The Philippines’ Department of Health (DOH) told the BBC that it “appreciates the good intentions of local government executives to fight dengue”.
It declined further comment, however, when asked if catching mosquitoes in exchange for cash is an effective way of stopping dengue.
“We urge all concerned to please consult and coordinate with their local health officers or the DOH regional office in their area for evidence-based practices that are known to work,” it said.
The bounty drew swift ridicule after it was announced late on Tuesday.
“Mosquito farming is coming,” one social media comment read. “Will a mosquito get rejected if it has only one wing?” read another.
Cernal said he was aware that the bounty had been bashed on social media, but that it was necessary for the community’s health.
Dengue is endemic in tropical countries, and outbreaks often occur in urban areas with poor sanitation which allows virus-carrying mosquitoes to multiply.
In severe cases, dengue causes internal bleeding which can lead to death. Its symptoms include headaches, nausea, joint and muscle pain.
Getty Images
Health authorities have flagged a rise in dengue cases nationwide
Barangay Addition Hills is home to nearly 70,000 people, crammed into a 162-hectare patch at the heart of the capital, Metro Manila.
Cernal said local health authorities recorded 44 cases of dengue in the area during the most recent surge of infections.
“This is one of the biggest and most dense areas. We have to do something to help the local government,” Cernal said.
National authorities have recently flagged a rise in dengue cases nationwide due to seasonal rains. The DOH said it recorded 28,234 cases on 1 February, a 40% jump from the previous year.
The department has advised the public to maintain the cleanliness of their surroundings, destroy potential mosquito breeding sites such as tyres, wear long-sleeved shirts and trousers and apply mosquito repellent.
Aside from dengue, the DOH said the rains have also fuelled a spike in influenza-like diseases and cases of leptospirosis, a rat-borne disease that people get when wading in flood waters.

:: Dozens of endangered false killer
whales wash up on a Tasmania beach
Eyewitness video at the scene showed dozens of the endangered dolphins, which can grow up to 20 feet (6.1 m) long and weigh up to 3,000 lbs (1,361 kg), stranded on a long stretch of the windswept remote beach. Some were still alive and struggling before the arrival of the rescue crews.
The location of the video was verified by the hills and river beach which matched satellite images. Reuters was able to confirm the date of the video from the source and original file metadata.
Initial checks showed 136 animals were still alive, Tasmania’s environment department said in a statement. Reasons for the beachings are unclear.
“Stranding response in this area is complex due to the inaccessibility of the site, ocean conditions and the challenges of getting specialist equipment to the remote area,” the statement said.
The dolphins were found stranded in the island state’s northwest coast near Arthur River, about 400 km (250 miles) from Tasmania’s state capital, Hobart.

S&P 500 Records All-Time Highs Led by Chipmakers; But Dow Jones Seesaw Continues
The S&P 500 reached new all-time highs, driven by a late-session rally in chipmakers, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average showed mixed movements.
President Trump has proposed new tariffs, potentially targeting the Pharmaceuticals and Automobiles sectors with a 25% tariff rate.
The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) minutes and S&P PMI data releases are upcoming and expected to provide further insights into the Fed’s monetary policy stance.
The three major Wall Street indices fluctuated throughout the US session, shifting between gains and losses. A rise in chipmakers propelled the S&P 500 to fresh all-time highs late in the session despite a drop in technology stocks.
The edged up by 0.2%, while the also posted a 0.2% gain. The showed mixed movements throughout the session. Meanwhile, the chipmaker’s index surged by 1.7%.

Intel’s (NASDAQ:) stock climbed on rumors about a possible company breakup. Super Micro Computer (NASDAQ:) saw a big jump thanks to a positive outlook. Walgreens Boots Alliance (NASDAQ:) rose after CNBC reported that Sycamore Partners might still be planning a takeover. Meanwhile, Meta’s 20-day streak of gains came to an end.
More Tariffs Ahead?
Yesterday we heard more from President Trump on proposed tariffs that may be announced. President Trump said we should see some announcements in the coming week while once again lamenting that the EU has been an unfair trading partner.
The President touched on specific sectors with Pharmaceuticals and Automobiles both expected to get hit with tariffs of around 25%. Tuesday’s comments are his most detailed yet in specifying other sectors that would be hit with fresh barriers.
It will be interesting to see what effect such announcements may have on stock prices moving forward following what has been quite an impressive earning season for US companies.
FOMC Minute and PMI Data Ahead
It is fair to say that following last week’s uptick in US inflation and drop off in retail sales numbers, market participants are once more focused on the Fed’s next moves. The FOMC minutes will be released later today, these should provide further insights into how the Fed sees tariffs impacting their monetary policy course and objectives moving forward.
The week will wrap up with S&P PMI data which will give us another glimpse into the performance of the US economy from both a manufacturing and service perspective.
Technical Analysis
S&P 500
From a technical standpoint, the S&P has printed a fresh all-time high and could be due for a pullback soon.
There was a triangle breakout that occurred as far back as September 19, with a target price of around 6170 which is now just 40 points away.
If we reach this level I do think we could be in for a short-term correction, however, I expect such a move to be met with buying pressure if the current status quo remains the same.
It is hard to find key levels as we continue to trade at fresh highs with no historical price action to serve as a guide.
However, the immediate focus for me will be 6170 and 6200 on the upside.
If price pushes lower from here, support may be found at 6100, 6080 (20-day MA).

Edgeware landlord fined over 18 people housed in three-bed home
Edgeware landlord fined over 18 people housed in three-bed home
A landlord has been ordered by a court to pay £37,000 after 18 people were found living in a terraced house in north London.
Charles Egbiremolen, 57, was operating eight bedsits without a licence in a converted three-bedroom terraced house in Fairmead Crescent, Edgware.
Egbiremolen was found guilty of nine offences at Willesden Magistrates’ Court on 25 November and sentenced at the same court on 5 February.
A spokesperson for Barnet Council said they would “not tolerate landlords who flout the rules”.
The council was called to the property following neighbour complaints about noise, antisocial behaviour and overcrowding.
Council inspectors and the police entered the property with a warrant and found extreme overcrowding, with one room being shared by six people including babies.
Another room of 25.5 sq ft (7.8 sq m) was occupied by two tenants, the council said.
The back garden was filled with building waste, mattresses and other debris and there was a kitchen in a separate structure in the garden, inspectors said.
They added there was disrepair throughout the property, it failed to meet safety standards, had an inadequate fire alarm system, and no safe means of escape in case of fire.
Egbiremolen was found guilty of a range of offences including failing to licence the property, management and safety offences, and failure to supply statutory information to the council.
He was fined £15,000, along with a £2,000 victim surcharge and £20,000 contribution to the councils costs.
“It is the responsibility of every landlord to make sure that their properties comply with the law and their tenants are safe,” a spokesperson for the council said.

US must not interfere in case, say alleged victims

Andrew Tate pictured inside court in Romanian capital Bucharest for a hearing last December
Four women who allege they were ********* abused by the social media influencer Andrew Tate have urged the US not to interfere in his case in Romania.
The women said they were “extremely concerned” by reports that US officials had asked Romania to relax travel restrictions against Tate and his brother, Tristan Tate, who have dual ***-US nationality.
Lawyer Matthew Jury, who is representing the four alleged victims, told the BBC they were “absolutely bewildered why the Trump administration has decided to interfere in this way”.
Tate, 38, and his brother were arrested in Romania three years ago and face trial on allegations of *****, trafficking minors and money laundering, all of which they deny.
Separately, the brothers are wanted by police in the *** over allegations of ***** and human trafficking, which they also deny. Their extradition to the *** will be dealt with once the Romania case finishes.
The Financial Times newspaper first reported that US officials had brought up the case with the Romanian government last week, and it was then followed up by Trump’s envoy Richard Grenell at the weekend.
One source told the paper that a request had been made by the US to return the brothers’ passports to them so they could travel while waiting for the criminal case against them to finish.
The Tate brothers are currently banned from leaving Romania, although are no longer under house arrest.
Romanian Foreign Minister Emil Hurezeanu confirmed to Euronews that Grenell had raised Tate’s case with him, and that Grenell had said he was “interested in the fate of the Tate brothers”. The minister denied this amounted to pressure from Americans.
A spokesperson for Mr Hurezeanu told the Financial Times: “Romanian courts are independent and operate based on the law, there is due process.”
According to the newspaper, Grenell said he had no “substantive conversation” with Hurezeanu, but added: “I support the Tate brothers as evident by my publicly available tweets.”
The US State Department has been approached by the BBC for comment.
‘Gaslighting’
The Tate brothers have wide support on right-wing social media, and supported Trump during the US election campaign.
Lawyer Mr Jury said: “It’s very clear from members of the Trump administration’s social media posts and public statements that there is a great deal of support for Tate.
“Either they don’t know or they don’t care about the nature of the allegations and how serious they are,” he told BBC Newsnight.
He said the women he represented were “absolutely distraught”.
“To see the most powerful man in the world support their alleged abuser, is incredibly traumatising… it’s gaslighting of a sort.”
And he called the reported US actions a “gross interference in my clients’ right to a fair trial and due process”.
EPA
The two brothers pictured at another court hearing last August
Mr Jury is representing the four women in a civil case against Tate at the High Court in the ***, after the Crown Prosecution Service decided not to prosecute their case. The Tate brothers deny the claims.
The civil case is separate to the criminal allegations currently being investigated by British police.
In their statement, the four women added: “We hope that the Romanian and the *** authorities will be left alone to do their jobs.”
Shadow justice secretary Robert Jenrick also warned the US not to interfere, saying the Tate brothers “must face our justice system”.
“No obstacles should be placed in the way of *** authorities. The government must make that clear to US counterparts.”
Tate is a self-described misogynist and has previously been banned from social media platforms for expressing those views.
A former kickboxer, he has gained millions of followers online and has lived in Romania for a number of years, having previously been based in the ***.

How Samsung Knox protects appliances from security threats
How Samsung Knox protects appliances from security threats
Imagine this — you’re having a hectic Monday morning at work and then suddenly you receive a SmartThings alert that your dog is barking continuously.1 You’re worried sick but also unable to go home to check. What can you do?
Fortunately, your Samsung robot vacuum is there to save the day. How, you may ask? Well, this isn’t just any vacuum. It precisely maps your home with advanced camera technology so that it can proactively cater to varying needs. In this case, that means finding your dog2 to investigate the cause of the barking and to provide you with immediate peace of mind3.
These smart capabilities verge on life-changing but they must be balanced with ultra-smart, ultra-safe security. And that’s where Samsung Knox comes in, which sits at the core of Samsung home appliances, meaning multi-layered shields are there for you. It’s there to protect your information, your home, and your family against cyber-attacks. To understand how this level of protection is achieved, let’s dig deeper into what makes up Samsung’s comprehensive security.
Layer up to keep concern down
A great place to start is what happens when you begin an interaction with SmartThings-connected devices protected by Samsung Knox. When your robot vacuum checks up on your dog, it will monitor different scenes around your home, which might be private and sensitive. Knox ensures these are securely protected multiple times. The command you issued and as well as the monitoring video are always encrypted before being sent through the system, and then only decrypted at the destination4.
Not only that, but when the device is turned on, it continuously checks for unauthorised modifications to the firmware and stores important information in a separate hardware space. Combining these layers makes the devices safer for the user and difficult for potential attackers. You can feel assured that whether your information is being stored on your device or being shared with the server for verification, it is always tightly secured.
For illustrative purposes only (Image credit: Samsung)
Knox Matrix: A security ecosystem like no other
Sometimes you may be curious how your information is protected when you share your private schedule like a business meeting or a doctor appointment on Samsung’s refrigerators with AI Family Hub. Also, you might like to see at a glance whether the security status of all Wi-Fi appliances in your home is properly maintained, and whether any information is leaking without your knowledge. Knox Matrix5 exists to solve these needs.
Knox Matrix is Samsung’s comprehensive security system, which extends protection across devices and networks using private blockchain technology. In addition to being protected through Knox’s multi-layered security, Samsung has started implementing a more advanced way of protection with Knox Matrix.
To make everything even safer, refrigerators with AI Family Hub6 adopted Credential Sync, a key feature of Knox Matrix. Simply, it updates a “secret key” created only for you, which is the only means of decrypting the private information registered on your refrigerator. So, your information is kept safe and protected when it’s stored on the fridge, or even when it’s shared with other SmartThings-connected appliances.
And there’s more; your devices will form a Trust Chain7. Think of it as a team of devices working together to protect each other. They constantly check in with one another to make sure your security status is fine. If one device notices something suspicious, it keeps you informed, including summarising the status at a glance in the security dashboard.
Simply put, your data — whether it’s a weekly schedule or the login credentials for your Samsung account — is securely protected from outsiders. And on the rare occasion something goes wrong, your devices team up to alert you and handle the issue together.
For illustrative purposes only (Image credit: Samsung)
Security that only gets stronger
It’s 2025, and companies are making more promises than ever about the capabilities of their devices. How can you trust Samsung appliances to be truly safe? The results speak for themselves: Samsung was actually the first company in the global home appliance industry to be verified to the highest ‘Diamond’ level rating under UL Solutions’ Marketing Claim Verification IoT Security Rating Program and also has the largest number of verified appliances in the world8.
And to fully future-proof its devices, Samsung plans to regularly provide security updates via Smart Forward, and in the event of security vulnerabilities, immediate emergency updates will be offered. For your experience as an end user, that means you get peace of mind from knowing that Samsung is protecting you more comprehensively than ever before while working hard behind the scenes to innovate the future of appliance security. Your takeaway from this article? Samsung Knox lets you leverage the benefits of the AI era without security concerns. It’s always better to be safe.
Available on Android and iOS devices. A Wi-Fi connection and a Samsung account are required.
Only dogs and cats can be recognized. The recognition capabilities may be limited by the posture or position of a cat. The ability to recognize your **** may vary depending on the type of animal and the living environment. It only recognizes a **** presence based on generic visual indicators, and cannot identify individual pets.
Depending on the sensitivity setting for barking, other noises may be misinterpreted, or barking may not be detected. Barking sounds are only detected when the TV is turned off.
Available on Samsung devices running Android 11 or later and may not work on some devices.
Knox Matrix is applied to all global regions uniformly, except China.
Currently, the Bespoke 4-Door French Door Refrigerator with AI Family Hub launched in 2024 has the Knox Matrix applied.
In 2025, Samsung plans to apply Trust Chain on its appliances.
As of Feb 2025.

Ukraine’s future at stake as U.S., Russia, Europe hold separate talks – National
A peaceful and lasting end to the war in Ukraine is finally being discussed — but not all parties are at the same table.
U.S. and Russian officials on Tuesday held their first talks since the war began nearly three years ago, with an opening round of bilateral negotiations in Saudi Arabia. The meeting came hours after European leaders convened in Paris to discuss shoring up their own security, as well as Ukraine’s.
None of the meetings included representatives from Kyiv, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says is absolutely necessary.
Canada will participate in another round of European talks on Wednesday.

EU scrambles as U.S., Russia prepare for Ukraine peace talks
The separate talks underscore the complexity of ending the deadliest European conflict since the Second World War, analysts say. While the new Trump administration is focused on securing a peace deal quickly, Ukraine’s EU allies want to ensure the U.S. doesn’t embolden Russia or leave a security vacuum on the continent.

“What the Americans don’t want to do is have a long, drawn-out peace process where there’s multiple stakeholders at the table, multiple drafting options, and this thing goes on forever,” said Andrew Rasiulis, a fellow at the ********* Global Affairs Institute and a former defence official. “The Europeans, of course, are pushing hard against that now.
“So these are two parallel tracks, and at some point they’ll intersect. The question is how.”
What are the U.S. and Russia discussing?
Tuesday’s meeting between U.S. and Russian officials in Riyadh effectively ended the strategy of isolating Russian President Vladimir Putin over the war he began in 2022.
The talks are expected to lead to a future meeting between Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump, though both sides said no dates have been set for that summit.
While Ukraine was discussed, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters after the meeting that the two sides also agreed to restore staffing at their respective embassies in Washington and Moscow and to explore closer relations and economic cooperation.

White House National Security Adviser Mike Waltz said the U.S. position was that the war must come to a permanent end, and that any peace negotiations will involve “some discussion of territory and there’s going to be discussion of security guarantees.”

U.S. President Donald Trump said last week it was “unlikely” Ukraine would get back all the land Russia has seized over the course of the war.
On Tuesday, he appeared to agree that Ukraine should also hold new elections.
“When (Ukraine says) they want a seat at the table, you could say the people have to — wouldn’t the people of Ukraine have to say like, you know, ‘It’s been a long time since we’ve had an election?’” Trump told reporters in Florida.
Russia also continues to insist that any pledge of a future Ukrainian membership in NATO must be taken off the table, which has been echoed by members of the Trump administration.

Rubio stressed that the talks marked the beginning of a conversation, and more work needs to be done. That included bringing in Ukrainian and European officials into future talks, he added, which he assured in a call with European leaders later on Tuesday.
What are European leaders discussing?
While the U.S. and Russia appeared to be growing closer, there were disagreements forming among European leaders on how to step up for Ukraine in the event of a future peace agreement.
Monday’s talks in Paris between the leaders of France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands, Denmark, NATO and the European Union saw agreements on boosting defence spending, but they remained split on the idea of deploying peacekeepers to Ukraine to back up any peace deal.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he’s ready to consider sending British forces on the Ukrainian ground alongside others “if there is a lasting peace agreement.” Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said she was also open to discussing troop deployments.

U.S. vows Ukraine’s involvement in peace talks with Russia, Zelenskyy unaware of negotiations
But the leaders of Germany, Poland and Italy pushed back on that idea, with ******* Chancellor Olaf Scholz calling such talk “premature” and “highly inappropriate” ahead of a peace deal. French President Emmanuel Macron was non-committal.
Trump said Tuesday he would be “fine” with European peacekeeping troops in Ukraine, something Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said after the Riyadh meeting was something Moscow would not accept.
Starmer added any European security guarantee would need U.S. backing, which American officials said remained a possibility.

“We want no one to decide anything behind our backs,” Zelenskyy told reporters during a visit to Turkey. “No decision can be made without Ukraine on how to end the war in Ukraine.”
Zelenskyy postponed his own planned trip to Saudi Arabia to avoid giving legitimacy to the U.S.-Russia meeting, the Associated Press and Reuters reported.
Gen. Keith Kellogg, Trump’s special envoy to Ukraine and Russia, will be in Kyiv on Wednesday for talks with Zelenskyy.
Canada has been invited to a second round of security talks in Paris on Wednesday with other European leaders not present at Monday’s meeting, a government source confirmed to Global News.
Foreign Minister Melanie Joly on Tuesday said she wants Canadians to play a role in keeping the peace in Ukraine.

She told a virtual news conference from Brussels that “we want to be part of these conversations regarding security guarantees,” and that Canada is pushing the U.S. to include Ukraine in future talks.
Trump had long promised to quickly bring an end to the Ukraine war upon entering the White House in January.
The war, which will hit the three-year mark next week, has seen the front line in eastern Ukraine effectively frozen for several months, though Russian troops are making slow but steady gains. Both sides have lost thousands of lives in what Waltz on Tuesday called a “meatgrinder.”

“The Ukrainians have the will to hold on … but it’ll be a further attritional war and it will end eventually through, ultimately, Ukrainian exhaustion and the lines will be further west than they are today,” Rasiulis said.
He said the Trump administration is likely looking at Easter as a potential deadline to secure a deal, while Putin is aiming for Russia’s Victory Day holiday on May 9 — the anniversary of the Soviet Union’s defeat of Nazi Germany that has long been used for Russian propaganda.
But Rasiulis added a closer U.S.-Russia relationship may have a “negative collateral effect” for Ukraine and Europe that both will need to prepare for.
The U.S. and Russia, meanwhile, agreed to hold more talks. Lavrov said Washington and Moscow agreed to appoint representatives to carry out “regular consultations” on Ukraine.
“I have reason to believe that the American side has started to better understand our position,” the Russian minister said.

What is NotebookLM: Power-up your research skills
What is NotebookLM: Power-up your research skills
Research is a time-consuming task that generally involves searching for and amassing lots of information which you then need to organize and understand.
With NotebookLM, you can upload many different documents related to a topic or project and use advanced language models to digest and analyze them.
It’ll forge connections between the documents and let you ask questions, enabling you to better make sense of the information. You can create summaries in no time and ask for the data to be presented in an easily digestible podcast format.
This article was correct as of February 2025. AI tools are updated regularly and it is possible that some features have changed since this article was written. Some features may also only be available in certain countries.
What is NotebookLM?
Developed by Google Labs and initially released in 2023, NotebookLM has the power to revolutionize how we research, understand and present great masses of information. It lets you set up individual notebooks comprising as many as 50 sources with up to 25 million words. These can be a mix of anything from Google Docs, Google Slides and web URLs to PDFs, text files and even YouTube videos and audio.
Once Google Gemini 2.0’s multimodal understanding capabilities have assessed and connected the sources, it effectively becomes an instant expert and a study buddy. You can dive in with your queries and requests as you seek to refine your ideas. What’s more, it’ll provide citations in its answers so you can double check the accuracy or delve a bit deeper within the source itself. It’s best feature is its ability to create an Audio Overview of the subject at hand.
What can you use NotebookLM for?
NotebookLM is sure to be a valuable tool for high-level academic researchers and it’s also great for students or anybody who wants to research something too. Bung it a bunch of research papers and chapters from a textbook and it’ll offer clarity in the form of summaries, help you establish facts in a particular topic area or maybe produce a study guide. You can go as far as recording a lecture or an interview and getting NotebookLM to transcribe and make use of that information too.
Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more.
As you can imagine, NotebookLM would also be useful for work projects and there is actually a spin-off called NotebookLM for Business which seeks to act as a central hub for teams. In some ways, it can be like having another member of staff, one who is able to help brainstorm ideas and swiftly pluck out facts and figures that can aid a conversation. You could also imagine time-pressed journalists turning to this tool – indeed, some have already started to do just that.
But perhaps the most fascinating use for NotebookLM is its ability to create a podcast of sorts based on the information you feed it. The Audio Overview feature turns documents into lively conversational discussions between a couple of AI hosts and these can help to cement ideas and themes in your head.
What can’t you use NotebookLM for?
NotebookLM won’t start browsing the web under its own steam and it won’t pull in live data. It will only deal with the information that you’ve provided so you can’t use NotebookLM to create content beyond your sources. You can’t ask questions about topics that you haven’t included either – upload a load of stuff about basketball, for instance, and you won’t get much joy out of asking about baseball. And NotepadLM only produces text and audio – it won’t generate images.
How much does NotebookLM cost?
You can get stuck into NotebookLM for free and get so much out of it. You can create summaries, FAQs, timelines, briefing docs and enjoy Audio Overviews while asking lots of questions.
If you pay for NotebookLM Plus, however, you gain five times more Audio Overviews, notebooks, queries and sources per notebook. You can also customize the style and length of notebook response and create shared notebooks and enjoy additional privacy and security (but surely that should be standard?). It’s available via the Google AI Premium Plan for $19.99/£18.99/UA$32.99 each month as well as via Google Cloud and Google Workspace.
Where can you use NotebookLM?
NotebookLM is available via a browser and there are no specific apps for phones, tablets or computers at the moment.
Is NotebookLM any good?
NotebookLM is an exceptional service and it can really help to speed up your research and organize your thoughts. It can work with an impressive number of sources and it quickly analyzes them so that you can get answers fast. But it’s the Audio Overview function which really impresses. It sounds truly amazing and, while it’s a little inflexible given an inability to edit transcripts, you’d find it very hard to tell that you’re not listening to two real people. For that feature alone, NotebookLM is definitely worth trying and exploring.
Use NotebookLM if…
You’re researching a project and need to read and consider a reasonably large number of sources.
You should also use NotebookLM if you fancy turning a topic or project into a highly-listenable, realistic-sounding podcast. There’s so much potential here to be creative.
Don’t use NotebookLM if..
You want the AI to carry out all of the research for you. The whole point of this particular service is that you identify the sources that you feel ought to be used for your project and upload them, thereby giving NotebookLM something to work with.
If you’d rather the AI trawled the web and looked for sources on your behalf, it’s best to look elsewhere.
Also consider
If AI-powered podcasting is the main attraction for you, then you should consider Jellypod which we found to be so good it actually leaves Google’s NotebookLM in the dust. For notetaking, you should explore ClickUp especially if you also want to incorporate project management and task automation.

Elleker residents concerned about damage to homes from Arc Infrastructure Great Southern Railway sleeper works
Elleker residents concerned about damage to homes from Arc Infrastructure Great Southern Railway sleeper works
Rattling furniture, cracks in the walls and vibrations that make it hard to sleep — residents near the railway line in Elleker are at their “wits’ end” after the track’s old sleepers were replaced with concrete ones.
Long-time Elleker resident Tracey Margetts, whose Lower Denmark Road home sits less than 100m from the track, thought she and her husband Trevor were alone in experiencing increased vibrations when the new concrete sleepers were added to the Great Southern Railway in early December last year.
“It’s a quite spread-out community and not everyone knows everyone,” she said.

“We thought it was only us but as soon as we started delving into it we found out a lot of people were having the same issues.
“There are people who have lived here 20, 30, 40, 50 years and haven’t experienced this before.
“It’s not just us who are right next to it feeling it either — there’s people a fair way out who are feeling it too.
“We believe it’s due to the new sleepers as no one has ever had a problem before they came in.
“We are at our wits’ end.”
Arc Infrastructure started the sleeper replacement and removal of “redundant” infrastructure works on the Great Southern Railway south of Redmond in late 2024 and will continue along the line to Mt Melville until March.

A works notification on its website says though nearby residents should expect more noise, vehicles and some dust, “all practical efforts have been made to minimise the disturbance”.
Mr Margetts said new cracks in their 1930s home were appearing each week. “I’ve worked on this house for the last 20 years,” he said.
“To watch it being ripped apart absolutely breaks my heart.
“I’m never one to complain about anything but this, it’s really been playing on me.”
Newer builds are reportedly faring even worse, with another resident — who asked not to be named — seeing visible cracks in the plaster cornices and bricks near the ceiling of his seven-year-old home.

The couple helped organise a community meeting at the Elleker Town Hall on February 8, where the 20 attendees formed a working group to present their concerns to Arc. “It’s quite concerning and it’s been a lot of stress for everyone,” Ms Margetts said.
“We want something done before (Arc) leave Albany. We’ve got a committee together then if it’s not sorted, we’ll get a lawyer for a class action.”
An Arc spokesperson said the company had been made aware of community concerns during the course of the “essential rail maintenance works”.
“While there is no reason to expect that the works undertaken would have led to an increase in vibration levels, Arc is taking the matter seriously,” they said. “In response to community concerns, Arc will engage a third party to conduct independent vibration monitoring and will update the community once the independent monitoring has been completed.”
Arc holds the State Government contract to manage all 5500km of the WA freight rail network.

Ms Margetts said the prospect of moving has entered the couple’s — and their neighbours’ — minds.
“It’s a nightly ritual, waking up to feel the house shaking like an earthquake is coming through it,” she said.
A second community meeting will be held at the Elleker Town Hall on Saturday.

NetEase Releases Statement On Marvel Rivals Layoffs
NetEase Releases Statement On Marvel Rivals Layoffs
NetEase has just released a statement regarding the recent layoffs of the Marvel Rivals team in the United States.
Marvel Rivals game director Thaddeus Sasser revealed yesterday that his entire team in the United States was suddenly gutted. Sasser added that the layoffs took place even after their team was able to “deliver an incredibly successful new franchise in Marvel Rivals for NetEase Games”. It was unclear why the layoffs occurred, but NetEase’s latest statement clarifies.
NetEase’s statement on Marvel Rivals layoffs was first spotted on an X post by Stephen Totilo. It revealed that the layoffs were part of a “difficult decision” required for “organisational reasons and to optimise development efficiency”. The decision led to cutting down their Seattle design team, which comprised six people. The developers stated that the affected will receive confidential and respectful treatment “with recognition for their individual contributions”.
At the same time, they assure players that the core development team for Marvel Rivals, which resides in Guangzhou, China, and is led by Weicong Wu, is “fully committed” to providing the best experience for the players. The developers are investing more in the game’s growth and are looking forward to delivering new characters, maps, features, and engaging live-service content for their community.
Here’s NetEase’s statement on the Marvel Rivals layoffs in Seattle:
“We recently made the difficult decision to adjust Marvel Rivals’ development team structure for organizational reasons and to optimize development efficiency for the game. This resulted in a reduction of a design team based in Seattle that is part of a larger global design function in support of Marvel Rivals. We appreciate the hard work and dedication of those affected and will be treating them confidentially and respectfully with recognition for their individual contributions.
We want to reassure our fanbase that the core development team for Marvel Rivals, which continues to be led by Lead Producer Weicong Wu and Game Creative Director Guangyun Chen in Guangzhou, China, remains fully committed to delivering an exceptional experience. We are investing more, not less, into the evolution and growth of this game. We’re excited to deliver new super hero characters, maps, features, and content to ensure an engaging live service experience for our worldwide player base.”
In other news, Marvel Rivals players can exchange their Battle Pass Chrono Tokens after the Season 1.5 update. Also, the new update will nerf the triple strategist meta. Google TV Streamer (4K) to Reportedly Get a New Remote With Backlit Controls Soon
Google TV Streamer (4K) to Reportedly Get a New Remote With Backlit Controls Soon
Google TV Streamer (4K) could soon benefit from a new accessory which may improve its operation in low-light scenarios, as per a report. The streaming device, which launched in August last year, is the latest flagship addition to the Mountain View-based technology company’s lineup of smart home entertainment solutions. While it features a redesigned set-top box-like form factor and 4K streaming capability, Google is reported to be enhancing its functionality further by developing a new remote that adds backlit controls.
Backlit Controls for Google TV Streamer (4K)
As per an AFTVNews report, Google’s latest update for the TV Streamer (4K) contains code references for backlit remote controls. One of the strings hints towards a setting which enables “illumination of the buttons on the remote control upon each press”. The accompanying arrays also suggest that Google might offer three control modes — Never, Standard, and Scheduled.
When set to Never, the backlit controls will not illuminate, as per the report The Standard setting will enable illumination upon each press, lasting for 5 seconds each time it is activated. Meanwhile, users may also be reportedly able to schedule the illumination for a specific time *******, for example, during night time from 6 pm to 6 am.
Since the current model does not ship with a backlit remote, the code suggests that such an accessory might be in development for the Google TV Streamer (4K) which aims to improve its operation in the dark.
As per the report, supported Google TV remotes may also have a dedicated button for toggling the backlit controls, with another string suggesting that “pressing the button on the remotes activates backlight illumination”.
Google TV Streamer (4K) Price, Features
Notably, the Google TV Streamer (4K) is priced at $99.99 (roughly Rs. 8,390) in the US. The device is available in two colourways: Hazel and Porcelain. It supports streaming at up to 4K HDR at 60 frames per second (fps), alongside Dolby Vision, HDR 10+ and HLG video formats, and Dolby Atmos audio. Running on Android TV OS, the streaming device comes equipped with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of onboard storage. The company says it can run TV streaming apps like YouTube, Netflix, Apple TV+ and more, providing access to over 700,000+ movies and shows.
In terms of connectivity, the Google TV Streamer (4K) comes with USB Type-C, HDMI 2.1, and Ethernet ports. It supports dual-band Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.1. Google says it also has AI capabilities, leveraging the company’s Gemini large language model (LLM) to provide summaries, reviews and season-by-season breakdowns of media. It also uses Google AI to provide content suggestions based on the user’s viewing preferences.

A Post By A MAGA Supporter Who Said They Were Laid Off Because Of Trump’s Cuts Is Going Mega-Viral
A Post By A MAGA Supporter Who Said They Were Laid Off Because Of Trump’s Cuts Is Going Mega-Viral
As a part of the Trump administration’s mass government layoffs, probationary staff at two US Department of Agriculture (USDA) research agencies were fired on Valentine’s Day, Reuters reported.
The department is responsible for ensuring US food production is safe, supporting farmers and infrastructure in rural areas, sustainability efforts that conserve land, and more. According to their site, “We keep America’s farmers and ranchers in business and ensure the nation’s meat, poultry, and egg products are safe, wholesome, and properly labeled.”
Well, the layoffs do not appear to follow party lines, as someone claiming to be of the workers laid off penned an open message to President Donald Trump in hopes of getting their job back.
A person in a suit and tie is sitting, looking directly at the camera, in a formal setting
The message circulated widely on X (formerly known as Twitter), collectively gaining over 3 million views.
Summary of text: A probationary DOE employee addressed a termination notice, highlighting their dedication and contributions over 16 years and appealing the decision
Here’s what it says: “Donald J. Trump Hellor Sir. I am one of the probationary employees terminated by the Doge at 9:00pm last night; February 14. I voted for you, Sir, three times, and I still support you,” the post reads.
“I was encouraged by the DOGE to see they were getting rid of wasteful government spending; I support that too.”
“My termination letter said I was being let go for performance reasons. I know that’s not true; I am an excellent employee. I’ve been with the Federal government for almost 16 years. Sixteen years in June,” it continues.
“I had started my career with USDA, transferred to DHS, and recently came back to USDA because it’s such a great Agency to work for. Surely that must count for something in your eyes. I’m loyal and I firmly believe that the work I do as a USDA APHIS PPQ employee is vital and important. My boss, his boss, the managers in neighboring states, all agree I’m doing an excellent job and that I’m a great asset to the team.”
“I’m the only [redacted] in the State of Kentucky and my work here is valued and honorable. Each time I voted for you, it was because I knew you’d make things right and you’d fix the wrongs. I’m counting on you now to make this right too.”
A person in a suit gestures while seated at a desk, in a room with a large window and flag in the background
In response to the post, little sympathy was found from MAGA-supporting commenters. One person wrote, “This is business ppl. You don’t sacrifice a country with bankruptcy to let ppl keep a job. They are very employable. Does it *****. Yes but it is a necessary evil.”
Tweet by CLM discusses the necessity of letting go of jobs during a bankruptcy, emphasizing it as a necessary step despite the drawbacks
Others questioned what the writer, who says they fully support Trump and the layoffs, expected. “Do these people think they are going to get an exception because they are Trumpers?” someone asked.
Tweet by Tim Hannan: “Do these people think they are going to get an exception because they are Trumpers? The leopard is not going to put your face back on.”
This rings especially true for those who remember Trump’s campaign promise to cut government spending. “I hear you,” this person wrote, “but all along in his campaign he proclaimed all he was going to do, you believed him… so here you are, you voted for it.”
Social media reply by F Lavigne7 discussing voting decisions and political campaign promises
Now, I need to know what your thoughts are. Let us know in the comments.

Intel principal engineer bemoans potential TSMC takeover, touts company’s 18A tech advantage
Intel principal engineer bemoans potential TSMC takeover, touts company’s 18A tech advantage

The rumors about Intel and TSMC forming a semiconductor production joint venture have spurred significant reactions among analysts, the industry, and politicians. Needless to say, it was natural for Intel employees to react to the information, too. Joseph Bonetti, Principal Engineering Program Manager at Intel Corp., wrote his personal opinion in a LinkedIn post that the company is about to reclaim its process technology lead and gain customers among fabless chipmakers in the coming years, so handing TSMC control of Intel’s manufacturing would be counterproductive (Edit: the post has now been deleted).
“Intel Leaders, Intel Board, Trump Administration, please do not sell out and/or give control of Intel Foundry to TSMC, just as Intel is taking a technical lead and getting out of first gear. This would be a horrible, demoralizing mistake,” wrote Bonetti.
Contrary to reports suggesting it lags behind a key competitor, Bonetti argues, Intel is making significant advancements in semiconductor manufacturing. The company’s latest fabrication process, Intel 3, is already used to make Xeon 6 data center processors, while the company’s next-generation Intel 18A is nearing completion and is expected to be used to make Panther Lake processors for client PCs later this year. Meanwhile, TSMC’s equivalent process technology — N2 (2nm-class) — will only enter mass production phase in late 2025.
Intel is also ahead with its High-NA EUV initiatives. The company acquired two ASML Twinscan EXE machines and is the only chipmaker that has experience working with such tools. Despite financial struggles, Intel Foundry is poised to prove itself with major partners, which makes any potential deal that hands control to a rival a major strategic error.
Many claims in recent reports misrepresent Intel’s progress, stresses Bonetti. Some suggest TSMC engineers are needed to get Intel’s latest process technologies to work, but Intel 3 has been in mass production for months, and Panther Lake, made on Intel 18A, is already sampling with laptop manufacturers.
Intel 18A and TSMC N2 both introduce gate-all-around transistors, but Intel’s fabrication process includes an additional breakthrough: backside power delivery, which promises to improve efficiency and performance and give Intel’s products an edge over those made by TSMC.
The Intel engineer reckons that Intel Foundry is currently unprofitable due to massive investments in facilities and equipment, and it has yet to win contracts from major external customers. However, early adoption by Microsoft and Amazon signals confidence in Intel’s capabilities. If these efforts succeed, more industry leaders may shift production. To that end, ceding control of Intel Foundry to TSMC would neutralize Intel as a competitor and harm U.S. leadership in the semiconductor industry.
