Bitcoin: Classic Price Rules the Narrative Now
Bitcoin: Classic Price Rules the Narrative Now
The most recent headline and hot off the press
“Rumors of the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) creating a national $BTC reserve spread across the crypto market.”
The article goes on to say that this will trigger a bull run – and it might.
But the price for now tells a different story, hence, we expect that narrative to change accordingly.
From a strategic perspective, the US having as a reserve currency would most likely lead to a US dominance.
There is a new project called BTC Bull, which launched its presale last week with promises of big $BTC rewards for those who bet on $BTC’s future.
Basically, the project will give away free BTC airdrops to token holders when Bitcoin reaches 150k and then at 200k and so on.
Since the presale began, the project has raised $2 million.
Furthermore, Texas and over 15 U.S. states, including Ohio, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Georgia, are also considering investing in Bitcoin.
While this trend is commendable, some analysts believe a state-level Bitcoin reserve may not impact BTC’s price.
And that brings me back to price and the narrative.
On the Daily chart, with all the attention and headlines, Bitcoin fell to new multi-week lows.
January 13th the low was 89,164.
With Bitcoin currently in a warning or caution phase, trading under its 50-day moving average, it is possible the sell-off reverses before hitting that January low.
On the Daily chart, Bitcoin is underperforming the benchmark.
Furthermore, the momentum indicator tells us that the bearish divergence between price and momentum is steepening.
Note how the red dots are now below the 200-DMA (green) while the price remains above.
Should Bitcoin break down under 89k, we refer to the weekly chart.
I love the weekly charts as they help us look out a bit and get a broader perspective.
First, you can see that BTC/USD is far from its major support at the 50-week moving average at about $75k.
While BTC continues to perform on par with the SPDR S&P 500 (NYSE:), the real motion indicator shows that the momentum is declining and has a way to go before it is in oversold territory.
As the price declines, the idea is to find a support level to buy with the best risk if wrong.
For now, we are standing aside until PRICE tells us what’s next.
ETF Summary

CS2 Caster Moses Says NA Needs More Events To Find Its Next ‘Phenom’
CS2 Caster Moses Says NA Needs More Events To Find Its Next ‘Phenom’
The Counter-Strike Major is returning to North America for the first time since the start of 2018. But while an NA team managed to lift the trophy then, it doesn’t feel like any team from the region is in the realm of contending for the BLAST.tv Austin 2025 trophy.
In the past couple of years, Counter-Strike fans have seen young phenoms like Danil “donk” Kryshkovet and Ilya “m0NESY” Osipov emerge. Why isn’t it happening in North America? CS2 caster, analyst, and former coach Jason “moses” O’Toole spoke to Gaming World Media about the state of NA CS, and what is needed for the region to properly compete with Europe.
‘When Was The Last Time We Had a Phenom?’
It’s been a long time since a North American player truly broke into the upper echelon of professional Counter-Strike play. When Moses spoke to GWM at the media event for the BLAST.tv Austin Major, he laid out his hopes that the event could reignite NA CS with new talent and new events.
When was the last time we had a phenom? When was the last time we had a new player burst onto the scene? If you look at the players at the top of the list [of NA players] you’ve got Twistzz and EliGE and they’ve been playing since 2015. I always wonder: all the talent in the country, but where’s it going?
Moses pointed out a country like Mongolia, which has managed to produce tier-one-ready teenagers like Azbayar “Senzu” Munkhbold and Ayush “mzinho” Batbold, saying “if they can do it in Mongolia, we can do it in North America.” The former coach of Team Liquid says the NA scene isn’t structured right to produce that kind of talent, and that the biggest issue if discovering that talent.
We exist in that weird space where we expect North American players to go to tier one events in Europe, but we have no ability to find out who they are because we have no events here. And that’s what I hope, in one sense, the Austin Major solves. A shot in the arm of North American Counter-Strike that brings some events back, bring some energy back, so we can develop those circuits and figure out who the players are that we should promote to a top team.
Moses isn’t the only person who cares about developing talent in NA. Complexity owner Jason Lake told Gaming World Media about the importance of “staying loyal” to NA, saying the region won’t grow if organizations keep “recycling the same big names from Europe and other regions.” Acquiring new player talent isn’t solely an issue with NA or Counter-Strike. François-Xavier Deniele, the VP of Global Esports at Ubisoft, told GWM at the Six Invitational that games die without new talent coming in.
Is the Austin Major going to reignite the North American Counter-Strike scene? Let us know on the Insider Gaming forum.

Ellie Roebuck: Ex-Manchester City goalkeeper on recovering from stroke and joining Barcelona
Ellie Roebuck: Ex-Manchester City goalkeeper on recovering from stroke and joining Barcelona
Roebuck did not play for Manchester City again after her stroke but she was able to complete her dream move to Barcelona in the summer.
Yet she says the way her final season was handled at a club where she made more than 100 appearances left her confidence “diminished”.
“I just felt like maybe my relationship with the manager [Gareth Taylor] got fractured.
“I don’t know whether that was me, maybe not hearing the clear communication or the fact that there just wasn’t clear communication.
“I got my head down and I just tried to work every day, but I think it was a badly managed situation. I’ve always been professional. I just felt like the respect wasn’t reciprocated in that same sense.”
Roebuck says that while she was “devastated” to leave City, it made joining Barcelona, who have won three of the last four Champions League titles, a very easy decision.
However, she admits that her first training session with the club after six months out was a lot more difficult than she anticipated.
“After coming back from having a brain injury and then saying you’ve got to dive at someone’s feet, it’s not the prettiest. But I had to get through it.
“Barcelona showed trust in me and for me, that was more important than anybody saying you can have a starting role. It’s the fact they showed confidence in me, and they wanted me here and they want to improve me.
“The girls are amazing. The top three Ballon d’Or nominees are all in this changing room and it was a shock how nice everybody is, it’s crazy to me. I’ve never been a part of a team other than the England team that’s like this.
“So, for me it’s a perfect fit and I enjoy going in every day.”
Now 25, Roebuck made her Barca debut in December in a 4-1 win over Real Betis, 303 days after her diagnosis and more than 18 months since her last appearance.
“Everyone expected me to be nervous, but I felt fine the moment I stepped out there. That’s the kind of the mantra I’m going for, every time I get that opportunity, I just want to enjoy it.”

Lawmakers enforce new mandate that could impact thousands of homeowners’ properties: ‘We can’t pretend anymore’
Lawmakers enforce new mandate that could impact thousands of homeowners’ properties: ‘We can’t pretend anymore’
Oregon has declared new rules for homeowners living in high-risk wildfire areas.
AP News reported that any Oregon properties on the newly developed “wildfire hazard maps” will face stricter building codes and mandates to reduce vegetation to make a home more resilient to fire.
Oregon law states that this will not affect homeowners insurance rates, which has been a concern with previous versions of the state-mandated rules.
In 2023, a state law was passed that prohibited insurers from using a wildfire hazard map produced by a state agency to cancel or decline to renew a homeowners insurance policy or to increase premiums.
The new defense codes will affect around 106,000 tax lots, requiring new construction to incorporate fire-resistant features. Current buildings may have to make upgrades such as metal roofs or fiber cement siding.
“If we manage our vegetation a certain way, if we build our structures out of certain materials, then we can increase the likelihood of that structure surviving,” Andy McEvoy, a faculty research assistant at Oregon State University’s College of Forestry who worked on the map, told the AP.
Watch now: How bad is a gas stove for your home’s indoor air quality?
The maps were put together after a record-breaking wildfire season last year and previous devastating firestorms. Blazes on Labor Day weekend in 2020, made worse by strong winds, killed nine people, burned more than 1,875 square miles, and destroyed thousands of homes and buildings. It was one of the worst natural disasters the state has witnessed.
The 2024 wildfire season was also historic, costing Oregon more than $350 million – the state’s most expensive on record, burning nearly 3,000 square miles. Blazes have gone so far as to burn homes along the Pacific coast, which were previously unaffected thanks to wetter and cooler weather conditions. But with record-high heat in recent years, wildfire seasons are growing longer, more intense, and reaching greater areas.
“After 2020, we can’t pretend anymore that this is just an issue for southwest Oregon and central Oregon,” McEvoy told AP. “All of those events really cried out for a statewide — a truly statewide — strategy to respond to wildfire risk.”
Oregon isn’t the only state dealing with the effects. Washington, Colorado, and California have also recently moved to address fire risk in their communities. As more and more states are dealing with extreme weather phenomena, it’s important to take measures that could save lives.
As NASA reported, planet-warming gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane, trap heat and increase air and ocean temperatures. This warming affects the water cycle, shifts weather patterns, and melts ice — all of which make extreme weather worse.
Weatherizing your home reduces energy costs, raises property values, and cuts down on pollution – which is a huge factor in the extreme weather we’ve seen over the past few years.
Anything we can do to reduce our individual carbon footprint is a huge plus for all of us. Veering away from dirty energy sources, unplugging devices when you aren’t using them, recycling, and composting are all ways we can help cool the planet and appease Mother Nature.
For those in affected areas or looking to install eco upgrades in their home, check to see what tax breaks and credits you may be eligible for. A lot of these installs, like solar panels and heat pumps, aren’t as expensive as they seem at first glance after considering the long-term savings and discounts.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip FE Allegedly Spotted on Samsung’s Firmware Server, Model Number Revealed
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip FE Allegedly Spotted on Samsung’s Firmware Server, Model Number Revealed
Samsung is believed to unveil a budget-friendly foldable phone called Galaxy Z Flip FE alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 this year. While the brand hasn’t officially confirmed the plans to introduce Galaxy Z Flip SE, the alleged model number of the phone has popped up on a Samsung server validating its existence. The Galaxy Z Flip SE is expected to be powered by a Samsung Exynos processor and could feature the same display as the Galaxy Z Flip 6.
Firmware for Galaxy Flip SE Appeared on Samsung’s Servers
Tipster Erencan Yılmaz on X claimed that the Galaxy Z Flip FE was spotted on Samsung gaming platforms servers with model number SM-F761. The letter ‘F’ in the model number suggests that it is a foldable phone, while the number ‘7’ indicates that it’s part of the Flip line. The screenshot shared by the tipster shows model number SM-F761B and the suffix ‘B’ at the end could indicate that this phone will launch in European markets.
The Galaxy Z Flip FE had earlier surfaced on the GSMA database with the model number SM-F761B. The Galaxy Z Flip 6 bears model number SM-F741, while the Galaxy Z Flip 5 has model number SM-F731. Based on this naming pattern, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 is expected to get model number SM-F751.
The Fan Edition foldable phone is expected to be launched alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 in July this year. Little is known about the device, but it is tipped to run on Samsung’s in-house Exynos 2500 series chipset. It is likely to feature a 6.7-inch main screen and a 3.4-inch cover screen, same as the Galaxy Z Flip 6. It could pack up to 12GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage.
Samsung is yet to announce any plans to unveil Fan Edition foldable phones. Also, the final model names of the FE models are not yet known. Therefore, this leak should be considered with a pinch of salt.

Genea cyber attack: One of Australia’s largest IVF providers takes systems offline after breach
Genea cyber attack: One of Australia’s largest IVF providers takes systems offline after breach
One of the country’s largest IVF providers was forced to take its systems offline after it was targeted in a suspected cyber attack.
Genea Fertility on Wednesday said it was responding to a cyber incident after “identifying suspicious activity on our network”.
Alarmingly, the fertility provider confirmed an “unauthorised third party” had accessed Genea data, with the company yet to ascertain the nature of the information accessed.
“As soon as we detected the incident, we took immediate steps to contain the incident and secure our systems,” the company said in a statement.
“Out of an abundance of caution, this included taking some of our systems and servers offline while we investigated the incident. These are now being restored while we continue our investigation.”
Genea Fertility has since set up an email dedicated to responding to patient concerns, with an automatic reply that apologises to clients and reassures they will receive a response.
“Thank you for contacting the Genea Fertility cyber incident team,” it says.
“We sincerely apologise for any concern this incident may cause you and want to reassure you that we take your privacy and the security of your data very seriously. This email is the best way for us to respond to your questions or concerns. We will respond as soon as possible. Thank you.”
The company said it is “working hard to ensure that there is minimal disruption to treatment”, reassuring patients that no contact meant no change to current treatment schedules.
“We will communicate with relevant individuals if our investigation identifies any evidence that their personal information has been impacted,” it said.
“We sincerely apologise for any concern this incident may cause and want to reassure patients that we take your privacy and the security of your data very seriously.”
It comes just days after the health provider had phone line outages and encouraged clients to get in touch via email instead. It remains unclear whether the two are linked.
Genea Fertility has more than 20 locations nationwide, including one in Perth, with thousands of patients accessing a range of fertility and genetic services.
Genea Fertility Perth has been contacted for comment.

Adin Ross Makes a Promise Ahead of GTA 6 Release
Adin Ross Makes a Promise Ahead of GTA 6 Release
Adin Ross is one of the most controversial yet influential streamers in the world and has recently made a bold promise about Rockstar Games’ upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6). During a live stream with FaZe Banks, Ross announced his plans to launch a GTA 6 RP (Roleplaying) server that will allow players to earn money through cryptocurrency.
What is this guy cooking up this time? | Image credit: Rockstar
If it sounds ridiculous to you, that’s because it kind of is. Rockstar and Take-Two already prohibit things of this nature in GTA 5‘s RP servers. So even if GTA RP takes off again in the new game, we most certainly can’t expect any kind of crypto integration with it. Besides the game probably won’t even be on PC at launch.
Adin Ross has set his sights on GTA 6 RP but did he think it through?
It is quite literally not allowed. | Image Credit: Rockstar Games
During a recent live stream with FaZe Banks, Adin Ross let us know his vision for a GTA 6 RP server unlike any before it. Ross claimed that the server would be entirely based on cryptocurrency and it would let players earn money while playing. He even went on to promise that he’d invest a lot of funds to make it the largest GTA RP server ever.

Fake gamers looking to make a buck while having no idea what they’re talking about, disgusting
— Synth Potato (@SynthPotato) February 4, 2025
FaZe Banks supported the idea by sharing that they intended to power the server’s economy with a custom digital token. According to Ross, the integration of crypto into GTA RP will “change the game”. We’ve already seen how big GTA RP can get and this is a big promise. But is it even feasible?
Rockstar Games has a strict stance on cryptocurrency and NFTs in Grand Theft Auto RP servers. Back in November 2022, the company published guidelines explicitly prohibiting commercial exploitation in RP servers, which includes the ***** of virtual currencies, the use of cryptocurrencies, and selling NFTs. Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, has even taken legal action against servers that violated these policies so Ross better watch out.
GTA 6 will probably have RP in some way
The studio has made moves to ensure that. | Image Credit: Rockstar Games
Even if Ross’ server idea were possible, a new RP scene may take years to fully develop. GTA 5’s RP servers only became mainstream after years of modding and community development, with platforms like FiveM playing a crucial role in their success. Rockstar’s recent acquisition of FiveM suggests that the company intends to support RP in GTA 6, but likely on its own terms.
Even if Rockstar were to allow crypto integration in GTA 6 RP servers, history suggests that such ventures rarely succeed. Ubisoft’s attempt to introduce NFTs into Ghost Recon failed, and the NFT-backed game DEADROP from Midnight Society recently shut down. blockchain a predatory cash grab
Take-Two Interactive has confirmed that GTA 6 is still on track for a Fall 2025 release, despite the lack of a second trailer. We don’t know of any solid release date but fans are speculating that it could be sometime in late November. Either way, there’s a lot of hype for the game and the kind of new trends that it will undoubtedly set.

Marco Rubio Is Walking into a Trap
Marco Rubio Is Walking into a Trap
I’M AN ETERNAL OPTIMIST. But my gut, informed by a career spent studying and implementing American foreign policy, tells me this week will not go well. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Rubio’s diplomatic experience is limited to his time in the Senate, during which he served on the Foreign Relations and Intelligence Committees. He has primarily focused on Latin American policy. Lavrov, on the other hand, has been Russia’s foreign minister since 2004, which makes him the longest-serving foreign minister in modern history. Before that he was a career diplomat. He is known for both his diplomatic savvy and his mastery of deception.
The subject of the Rubio-Lavrov discussions will be Ukraine, a nation that will not have a representative at these alleged peace talks. President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that any decisions made during these talks without Ukraine’s participation are unacceptable. Representatives from NATO, the EU, or any European nation have not been formally invited to take part in the sessions. Perhaps my gut is just reflecting my bias toward Ukrainians being allowed to defend their territorial sovereignty and their nation’s independence.
In late February 2022, as Russian tanks rumbled toward Kyiv and the world braced for Ukraine’s collapse, I had a gut reaction, too. While many analysts and even some U.S. government officials expressed concern that Ukraine would collapse within days, I publicly predicted that Ukraine would not just hold their own but repulse the invasion, which they did. My assessment was based on my experiences with both the Russian military (which I said at the time was inept) and Ukraine’s fledgling army (which had shown significant improvement since the early 2000s). Ukraine’s unique culture, spirit, resolve, and refusal to bow to tyranny have since become world famous.
The Bulwark is building the best pro-democracy community on the internet. To join, become a Bulwark+ member.
OVER THE NEXT THREE YEARS, with a map in my home office and paying dogged attention to open-source intelligence reports from the war zone, I outlined what military leaders usually describe as “phases of a campaign.” While these are not universally or even publicly recognized by others, these serve as my description of the last three years of the war. So far, there have been nine phases. Some of them overlap—the aerial campaigns overlapped with ground and naval campaigns, etc.—but each had its turn as the most significant part of the war. Here are succinct descriptions of each phase:
Phase 1—The failed Russian invasion (February–April 2022): Designed to be a lightning strike—seizing Kyiv, decapitating Ukraine’s leadership, and forcing a swift surrender—the initial Russian invasion was dysfunctional for a variety of reasons: poor generalship, lack of junior leaders, bad doctrine and tactics, lousy equipment, little logistical planning, and overwhelming hubris, just to name a few. Ukraine, armed with Javelins, Stingers, iron will, and clever leadership, halted the assault with a mix of conventional operations, guerrilla tactics, and population determination. The Battle of Kyiv ended in a humiliating Russian retreat.
Phase 2—The Russian shift to the East (April–July 2022): After its failure in Kyiv, Russia recalibrated, focusing on the Donbas, where it thought it could make better use of its traditional strengths—artillery and massed infantry. Ukraine, outgunned but not outmatched, used mobile defenses, precision strikes, and newly provided precision HIMARS systems to blunt Russian advances. The battle for cities like Severodonetsk and Lysychansk showed Ukraine’s ability to trade space for time—a key factor in any active defense—and contributed to severe Russian losses.
Phase 3—The Southern counteroffensive and Kherson’s liberation (August–November 2022): Ukraine seized the initiative, launching a counteroffensive in the south. U.S. intelligence and Western-supplied weaponry stopped Russian logistics and maneuvers, forcing them to abandon Kherson without a costly urban fight while also demonstrating that Ukraine could retake lost territory, boosting morale and shifting global perceptions. Russian forces also managed to avoid being surrounded, living to fight another day and demonstrating that the Russian Army is also capable of adaptation, even if not as quickly as the Ukrainians.
Phase 4—The Battle of Bakhmut and Russian attritional warfare (December 2022–May 2023): With Wagner Group forces leading the charge, Russia turned to brutal, high-casualty attrition warfare. Ukraine held Bakhmut for months before the city eventually fell, drawing Russian forces into a costly fight and inflicting massive casualties. This led to the inactivation of Wagner and an unfortunate Russian “accident” of the group’s leader, Yevgeny Prigozhin.
Phase 5—The 2023 summer counteroffensive (June–September 2023): Attempting to quickly train and incorporate Western-supplied armored vehicles, Ukraine launched a long-anticipated counteroffensive. Unfortunately, Russia had time to construct layered defensive fortifications protected by meticulously planned long-range fires and drones. Having seen even the best of armies attempt the kind of combined arms maneuver and complex obstacle breeches Ukraine was attempting to employ, my gut told me then it would not go as well as many anticipated.
Phase 6—The deep-strike campaign (October 2023–February 2024): Russia continued relentless attacks on Ukrainian civilian targets—a war crime—while Ukraine began using long-range missiles and newly produced drones to target Russian supply hubs, airbases, and the ****** Sea Fleet. Russia, forced to stretch its defenses and redeploy resources, bowed to Ukraine’s ability to hit deep behind enemy lines.
Phase 7—The winter of drones and electronic warfare (February–May 2024): Both sides ramped up the use of drones and electronic warfare. Ukraine used small-unit combined-arms teams, deep strikes, special operations, NATO-provided intelligence, and improved electronic countermeasures to outmaneuver Russia’s superior numbers and thwart Russian advances.
Phase 8—The 2024 spring-summer battlefield maneuvers (June–September 2024):With renewed U.S. financial support after a congressional delay, Ukraine launched targeted offensives to exploit Russian weaknesses, forcing Russia to shift defensive positions repeatedly and further eroding their ability to sustain the fight. Ukraine launched a campaign into the Russian region of Kursk, taking a chunk of land the size of Los Angeles and a small city, proving that their capacity for surprise and offensive operations had not been depleted.
Phase 9—Betting on allies (October 2024–January 2025). Russia deploys North Korean forces to try to reduce the Ukrainian salient in Kursk. While the Ukrainians lost ground and consolidated their lines, the North Korean forces not surprisingly proved mostly ineffective. The Russian economy increasingly showed signs of weakness as Zelensky for the first time signals openness to peace talks.
We’re now entering what some might call Phase 10, the inflection point. The Trump administration appears to be turning away from eight decades of a strong U.S.-European strategic alliance. At the same time, my gut says we may be approaching a critical turning point: Russia is weakened, and Ukraine seems to be gaining strategic momentum. The path the U.S. government chooses in the next few weeks could contribute to Ukraine’s long-term success, continued support of alliances and partnerships that have contributed to our nation’s security and prosperity in the past, and a world order that promotes global stability, prosperity, and national sovereignty.
Throughout these phases, U.S. and NATO support to Ukraine has been pivotal, even when some have criticized the tempo and amount of that support. The question now is whether that commitment will hold firm or waver at this crucial moment in history.
Share
THE MEETING BETWEEN RUBIO AND LAVROV will not be one of equals. As a senator, Rubio was, until late in his tenure, a strong supporter of aid to Ukraine. But he now must represent a more transactional president whose skepticism of Ukraine and friendliness to Russia go back years. Lavrov represents a paranoid, aggressive, authoritarian regime that still sees itself as engaged in a long-term war against the United States and Europe. The hastily announced meeting being held in Saudi Arabia—an authoritarian Gulf Arab state—may have repercussions far from the war that is ostensibly being settled. The Trump administration and Ukraine must both be struck by the parallels to a previous Trump peace agreement in which another inexperienced secretary of state made a deal with a more seasoned enemy to end a war without any American allies in the room—Trump’s Doha Agreement with the Taliban.
Trump has claimed that the American withdrawal from Afghanistan—which his Doha Agreement guaranteed—inspired Putin to invade Ukraine. If that’s the case, he should consider what lessons others, like Xi Jinping, might take from an American abandonment of Ukraine.
Back in February 2022, the night before tanks rolled across the border of Ukraine, all intelligence indicators suggested that Russia was indeed about to invade, but I remember thinking no one in their right mind would be so foolish as to start such a war. But because of what I’ve learned about Putin over decades serving in Europe, watching him become increasingly emboldened, my gut told me he would be just that rash and reckless. Putin did give the order, his troops indeed crossed into a sovereign country, and the costs to Russia will take generations to recover.
The United States and NATO can counter Putin’s criminal action and restore international order—not just in Europe, but anywhere an aggressive, authoritarian country might be considering a land-grab. I hope this time my gut is wrong, and that our support for Ukraine continues.

When — and if — to give your child a smartphone has become a hot topic over recent months.
Parents are citing evidence that social media can increase the risk of mental health issues as a reason to stop their children from using smartphones, but they’re facing a number of challenges — not least peer pressure — which make it hard to enforce the rules at home.
Jonathan Haidt, NYU professor and author of “The Anxious Generation,” is one of the brains behind what’s become known as the smartphone-free childhood movement. He has some advice for parents struggling with this, saying tackling the issues of smartphone use in children requires parents to work together.
“The reason why this is such a global problem and the reason why many parents feel so powerless is that when we each act alone and try to say: ‘No, you’re not getting a smartphone,’ our child says: ‘But I’m the only one who doesn’t have one. I’m excluded,'” Haidt told CNBC host Tania Bryer at the World Economic Forum.
“So when we face this as individuals, we’re trapped, and it gets worse and worse, and because we’re stuck in a collective action problem, the only way out is through collective action.”
His comments come as the smartphone-free-childhood movement gains traction, with organizations popping up around the world. These include the U.K.-based Smartphone Free Childhood, Austin-based Wait Until 8th, Unplugged in Canada, No Es Momento in Mexico, and the Heads Up Alliance in Australia.
Haidt said there are what he calls “four simple norms” that can help parents delay giving smartphones to their children and teenagers.
“Two of them need government, two don’t,” Haidt explained. “Four simple norms and if most of us do them we solve the problem.”
1. No smartphones before 14
The first is not giving children smartphones before age 14. “Let them have a flip phone, but remember, a smartphone isn’t really a phone. They could make phone calls on it, but it’s a multi-purpose device by which the world can get to your children,” Haidt said.
Children who received their first smartphone at an older age report fewer mental health harms, a global study of 27,969 18–24-year-olds by U.S. non-profit Sapien Labs found in 2023.
It showed that 74% of female respondents who got their first phone at age six said they were distressed or struggling but this reduced to 52% for those who got their first smartphone at age 15.
For male respondents, these feelings reduced from 42% for those who got their first smartphone at age six, to 36% for those who got their first smartphone at age 18.
2. No social media before 16
The second is for parents to wait until 16 before allowing their children to have social media accounts.
“Social media is wildly inappropriate for minors… so no social media till 16,” Haidt said at the event pointing to the growing body of research showing how social media affects young people’s confidence.
Social media companies are trying to address some of the concerns parents and lawmakers have raised. For example, Meta’s Instagram has introduced teen accounts for kids 16 and under, which are private, have restricted settings that can only be removed by parents, and have notifications silenced during certain times.
Other efforts include Google launching YouTube Kids in 2015, as a separate app with child-friendly content and controls.
Haidt said the government and social media companies can take things further by implementing age verification checks. Australia is one of the few countries that has rolled out a social media ban for under 16s.
3. Phone-free schools
Haidt’s third norm is having phone-free schools, which should be government-enforced, he said. “What we’re seeing is…the teachers all hate the phones, kids can’t learn when they’re on TikTok and video games and porn during class.”
Most schools in England implement a ban or restrictions on phone use in schools, but there’s been a push to turn the guidance into law in the past year. Meanwhile, Zhengzhou has become the first city in China to pass legislation to limit phone use by students in primary and secondary schools.
Reasons for banning phones in schools include increasing attention in class and nurturing more in-person socialization.
4. More free play
The fourth suggested rule is replacing “digital” childhoods with real-life activities. He said we need “far more free play and independence in the real world,” and “we have to give kids back an exciting childhood.”
When it comes to collective action, Zach Rausch, a research scientist at NYU and lead researcher for “The Anxious Generation,” previously told CNBC Make It that it’s crucial to organize with the parents of the kids in your children’s class.
“Talk with their parents, and if you all together decide to delay smartphones till high school, then it’s going to be much easier because then you can say ‘Well, Johnny is also not getting his smartphone till 14’,” he said.
Rausch also called for the reinstatement of a play-based childhood where children had the autonomy to play outdoors, be independent, and take risks, which is “really crucial for human development.”

Pristine piece of land sold for $100 million — here’s what it’s being used for
Pristine piece of land sold for $100 million — here’s what it’s being used for
Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon approved a deal to sell part of the state’s land to the federal government and will join it to Grand Teton National Park. Becoming part of a national park will make the land protected.
According to the Associated Press, the 1-square-mile land borders the Grand Teton National Park on three sides and a national forest on the fourth. The deal is for $100 million, and the government will pay $62.5 million, with private funds covering the rest.
The land is home to grizzly bears, moose, and elk and is covered in sagebrush, shrubs, and trees.
The AP reported the governor had previously threatened to sell the land to a developer. However, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management has agreed not to put “too many restrictions on development, including oil and gas drilling.” This was the condition upon which the governor agreed to the *****.
The addition of the southeastern part of the Jackson Hole property to Grand Teton National Park is great news for Wyoming residents. Rainforest Trust says protected lands can benefit local communities by promoting ecotourism and creating jobs in the travel industry.
Protected areas also protect biodiversity. When biodiversity is disrupted, diseases can spread. Rainforest Trust states, “An estimated 60% of infectious diseases — including SARS-CoV-2, Lyme, and Ebola — are zoonotic in origin.”
Watch now: How bad is a gas stove for your home’s indoor air quality?
Protecting species is also vital because many are being lost at a shocking rate. It’s called the “sixth mass extinction.”
These protected lands are also crucial for feeding people, as millions rely on them. They provide fruits, plants, fish, and honey, and protected watersheds provide clean water.
Protected land and forests also absorb the polluting gases that are warming the planet, and preserving these areas is just one way to mitigate the consequences of the Earth’s rising temperatures.
If you live near protected land, you can take local action and volunteer to help clean up and restore these areas. You can also advocate for policies that protect these lands.

iPhone SE 4 or iPhone 16E Launch Today: Everything We Know So Far
iPhone SE 4 or iPhone 16E Launch Today: Everything We Know So Far
Apple announced last week that it will launch a new product on February 19 — that’s today — and the firm is widely believed to be preparing to launch the iPhone SE 4 (or iPhone 16E) as the successor to its 2022 model. While the company has yet to announce any plans for a new smartphone, recent reports suggest that Apple’s next affordable iPhone will arrive with several hardware upgrades, including a larger display, a faster Apple chip, and support for Face ID. It is also expected to offer support for Apple Intelligence features.
iPhone SE 4/ iPhone 16E Launch: Will There Be a Livestream?
Unlike previous Apple events, Apple has yet to announce when it will unveil its next product, which is expected to arrive as the iPhone SE 4 (or the iPhone 16E) on Wednesday. It’s worth considering that the launch of the company’s upcoming smartphone might not be streamed live, like the M4 MacBook Pro and iMac models that were unveiled last year.
iPhone SE Series Popularity Over the Years
According to details shared by Counterpoint Senior Analyst Varun Mishra, the iPhone SE series has been Apple’s affordable gateway into the company’s ecosystem since it was introduced in 2016. The first (2016) and second (2020) versions of the smartphone were popular among users with a 10 percent and 13 percent share of total iPhone sales, respectively.
However, the current iPhone SE (2022) model accounted for just 1 percent of total iPhone sales as of 2024, according to Counterpoint, which is a clear indicator that Apple would need to introduce a major refresh of its ‘Special Edition’ smartphone. Recent reports suggest that this is exactly what the company has in store for the upcoming model.
iPhone 16E or iPhone SE 4 Specifications (Expected)
Based on recent reports, the iPhone SE 4 (or the iPhone 16E) will be equipped with a 6.1-inch OLED screen, which is considerably larger than the 4.7-inch LCD panel on the 2022 model. It is also expected to feature an all-screen design, with a display notch, just like the iPhone 14.
While the upcoming iPhone is expected to resemble the iPhone 14, with its glass and aluminium body, it will have one noticeable difference — a single rear camera with an upgraded 48-megapixel sensor. The handset is also expected to feature an Action Button instead of Apple’s mute switch, and it will feature a USB Type-C port instead of the older Lightning connector.
The iPhone 16E is also expected to arrive with a more powerful A18 chip, while the iPhone 14 (like the current iPhone SE model) was equipped with the A15 Bionic processor. If this is the case, it is likely to offer support for Apple Intelligence features found on other models in the iPhone 16 series. Apple could also introduce it’s first in-house 5G modem on the upcoming handset, according to reports.
iPhone 16E or iPhone SE 4?
Until a couple of months ago, it was believed that Apple’s next affordable smartphone could arrive as the iPhone SE 4. However, recent reports suggest that the company could introduce the device as the iPhone 16E instead, as the handset has several specifications in common with the iPhone 16, such as an upgraded A18 chip and support for Apple Intelligence, as well as the Action Button.
Other notable upgrades, such as the move to a 48-megapixel rear camera, the use of Face ID instead of Touch ID, and a 6.1-inch OLED display in place of the smaller 4.7-inch LCD screen, might also justify the rumoured change in branding to the iPhone 16E. The handset is also expected to offer support for MagSafe chargers and accessories, like other recent iPhone models.

With one Walmart closing its electronic section, an employee finished a 12-hour shift by purchasing two leftover Ryzen 7 7800X3Ds for just $99.75 each. They promptly posted them on eBay and sold them in hours for four times that. That’s a tidy profit for the buyer and still a good CPU for its resold price.
Over on Reddit (via VideoCardz), user Global-Pickle5818 posted the whopping deal they had found. $350 below its MSRP, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D was selling for $99.75 as the Walmart they work at was remodelling and the components section was closing alongside it. It is unclear right now if they plan on reopening it but much of the tech in-store had been there for some time and the Ryzen CPUs were some of the last stock available.
The Ryzen 7 7800X3D was our previous choice for the best CPU for gaming before the arrival of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D at the end of last year. The 7800X3D is currently powering my home rig and it’s still an excellent chip, despite being surpassed.
Rather predictably, the announcement on Reddit is filled with Redditors chancing their arm at buying the CPU for hundreds under retail and grudgingly congratulating the poster. The reason these CPUs sold for so cheap is that the store was selling off its components for 50% off for weeks prior to the lucky moment the original Redditor had found. Before this, they had managed to pick up an RTX 4070 for $350, and this 75% off deal on CPUs was the very last of the stock.
Though the Reddit user doesn’t clarify which of the recent listings are theirs, a recently sold entry seems to be from their rough location, the top of the surface behind the CPU is the same as one image previously posted, and it seems to have sold around the same time they announced it had. If this listing is the correct one, it suggests the user managed to make $600 in profit from their purchases (not including shipping and travel costs).
This profit was made whilst also undercutting the recommended price on eBay by $30 reportedly. Global-Pickle5818 had tried to purchase the other two CPUs the store had in stock but they had been sent to the store for shoppers who purchased them online for full price (ouch). If they had managed to grab all four of the CPUs to sell on eBay, they would have made enough profit to buy themselves a whole new rig, or maybe even an RTX 5080 if they were lucky enough to find one.
That’s not a bad way to end a long shift.

Singapore to see ‘limited’ direct impact from US tariffs: Gan Kim Yong
Singapore to see ‘limited’ direct impact from US tariffs: Gan Kim Yong
Gan Kim Yong, Singapore’s deputy prime minister, during a panel session, at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2025. The annual Davos gathering of political leaders, top executives and celebrities runs from January 20 to 24.

Singapore will likely see only a “limited” direct impact from U.S. tariffs as the country runs a trade deficit with the U.S., the country’s deputy prime minister said.
In 2024, the U.S. had a trade surplus with Singapore of $2.8 billion.
However, Gan Kim Yong, Singapore’s deputy prime minister and minister for trade and industry said that the city-state “cannot underestimate” the impact of tariffs in the longer term.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with CNBC’s “Squawk Box Asia,” Gan highlighted that companies could decide to change their production base. In turn, supply chains and trade patterns will shift, causing “greater friction and greater cost” in the global economy that may slow it down.
When asked if tariffs will affect Singapore’s growth projection, Gan said that Singapore does not take its economic forecast for granted and continually works towards meeting, or even exceeding, its target.
“We try to push the economy a little bit further and hope that we can perform better than we projected,” Gan said, adding that the country will also “prepare to give some room, should there be any disruptions to the economy.”
Singapore’s economy is heavily dependent on trade, with the country boasting a trade-to-GDP ratio of over 300%, one of the highest globally.
Gan’s comments come a day after Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced the country’s budget for its 2025 fiscal year. It unveiled a slew of support measures for households and businesses to cope with cost-of-living pressures, as well as schemes to support the development of local companies.
One notable announcement made by Wong in the budget speech was that Singapore would study the potential deployment of nuclear power in the country, after having initially assessed in 2010 that conventional nuclear energy was unsuitable for the city-state.
Gan told CNBC that the main consideration for Singapore was the safety and maturity of nuclear technology, also noting that Singapore’s small land size prevents it from having a large safety buffer zone, such as those in traditional nuclear plants.
The island of 456.3 square miles relies on mainly liquified natural gas to fuel its energy needs. In 2023, around 95% of its energy generation came from LNG. Most of Singapore’s natural gas comes from Malaysia and Indonesia.
The remaining 5% of electricity supply is generated by a mix of of coal, oil, solar and waste.
Hence, Singapore is observing the development of small modular reactors, or SMRs, to assess if they are suitable for the country.
“It all depends on the development of technology, for example, how we can commercialize the SMRs to make sure that they’re viable and they are suitable for us?,” Gan said.
While he did not specify how long it would be before Singapore implements nuclear energy, if at all, Gan said, “It will take time for ourselves to be ready for the SMRs when the technology is available,” he said. “Even preparation of sites will take time.”

Tiger Lily Hutchence: Daughter of INXS legend Michael Hutchence shows off baby bump in London
Tiger Lily Hutchence looked radiant walking the streets of London where she debuted her growing baby bump in public alongside her boyfriend.
The 28-year-old, who is the daughter of INXS rocker Michael Hutchence and British TV presenter Paula Yates, rugged up in a comfy outfit in an attempt to conceal her bump with an oversized pink cardigan underneath a blue and white jacket.
She added a pair of brown trousers and blue sneakers to the look, complete with a ****** scarf wrapped around her head.
Her long brunette hair was tucked into the scarf for extra warmth, and Tiger Lily smiled as she chatted with her partner Ben Archer.
Tiger Lily’s appearance comes after Archer announced his girlfriend’s pregnancy with an Instagram post that included images of the singer wearing white underwear with her belly on show.

It also comes as a rare insight into her personal life which she usually keeps very private.
The pregnancy announcement has since been deleted from Archer’s account.
The couple have been dating since June 2023 and were spotted in Perth in December of that year heading to a New Year’s Eve party together.
She previously dated musician Nick Allbrook, whom she was with for six years and reportedly engaged to until they split in early 2023.

Three years later her mother died after an accidental overdose in 2000.
Bob Geldof, who Yates was married to before meeting Hutchence and shared three daughters, adopted Tiger Lily into his family so she could be around her half-sisters Peaches, Fifi and Pixie.
Another tragedy hit Tiger Lily’s family when Peaches died in 2014.
Following her sister’s death, Tiger Lily revealed she wrote an album called Tragic Tiger’s Sad Meltdown to help deal with her grief.
She relocated to WA and recorded the album in the living room of the Fremantle house she was residing in at the time.
Hutchence’s death, ruled to be suicide while depressed and under the influence of alcohol and drugs, rocked the *********** and international music world.
He helped start INXS in 1977 and the band went on to sell more than 50 million records worldwide, making them one of Australia’s highest-selling music acts of all time.

Irvine police warn of alleged jewelry-stealing scheme involving Romanian nationals
The Irvine Police Department has released photos of two Romanian nationals who allegedly perpetrated a “jewelry switch scam” in Culverdale, and investigators believe there could be more victims.
Last week, one person had a gold necklace worth $2,000 stolen by Dinu Adelina, 29, and Miclescu Cosmin, 34, police said on social media.
“In these cases, suspects engage victims in a conversation and then offer them a piece of jewelry as a thank you for their help or to ‘honor’ them,” police said. “While the suspects place fake jewelry on the victim, they remove their valuable jewelry.”
