  2. JetBlue talking to ‘multiple airlines’ about a new partnership JetBlue talking to ‘multiple airlines’ about a new partnership A JetBlue plane takes off from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on Jan. 03, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. Mario Tama | Getty Images JetBlue Airways is talking with “multiple airlines” about a potential new partnership after federal judges struck down two previous deals, the carrier’s president said Wednesday. “If we find a deal that’s accretive, we’ll absolutely do it,” JetBlue’s president, Marty St. George, said at a Barclays industry conference. A federal judge in 2023 ruled the New York airline’s partnership in the Northeast with American Airlines was anticompetitive, while a different judge last year blocked JetBlue’s plan to acquire budget carrier Spirit Airlines, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last year. JetBlue representatives didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. JetBlue, which marked its 25th year of flying this month, has been searching for partnerships and deals to grow, arguing it must do so to better compete with larger carriers like Delta, American and United. St. George said a potential tie-up would benefit the company’s loyalty program, noting that customers say the frequent flyer points on JetBlue are not as strong as those of the big three U.S. carriers. “Given that we really don’t have full global earn and burn, I think to be able to add that to our network would be very, very helpful,” he said. 3. ACL Elite cast into confusion as Shandong quit ACL Elite cast into confusion as Shandong quit Shanghai Port slipped to a 2-0 loss against Yokohama F Marinos on Wednesday but the ******** Super League side could still qualify for the last 16 of the Asian Champions League Elite following Shandong Taishan’s withdrawal earlier in the day. Goals from Asahi Uenaka and Jun Amano in four second-half minutes earned Steve Holland’s side victory in Pudong Stadium but the line-up for next month’s knockout rounds remains uncertain after Shandong pulled out of the competition. The withdrawal, which Shandong claimed was due to health issues within their squad, was announced by the Asian Football Confederation hours before the ******** side were due to face South Korea’s Ulsan HD in their final match. Shandong’s decision to pull out should mean all of the club’s results in this season’s tournament are annulled as per the competition’s regulations. That has cast an air of uncertainty over the final league phase table for east Asia. If Shandong’s results are expunged, three clubs — Buriram United, Shanghai Shenhua and Shanghai Port — have earned points across eight matches compared to seven for the remaining teams in the competition. The AFC has said the matter will be referred to the relevant committees “as appropriate for their decisions”. No timeline has been given. First leg ties are regarding due to be played early March. The uncertainty had no bearing on Yokohama’s performance as last season’s runners-up dominated in Shanghai. Home goalkeeper Yan Junling made a string of saves to deny the Japanese club until Uenaka thumped a rising shot beyond the goalkeeper in the 64th minute. Amano doubled the lead four minutes later when he chested in Kanta Inoue’s cross from the right to earn Marinos a deserved victory. That put Marinos top of the table, a status they should retain even if their draw with Shandong is expunged. Apple unveils cheaper iPhone 16e powerful enough to run AI Apple unveils cheaper iPhone 16e powerful enough to run AI Tim Cook, chief executive officer of Apple Inc., during the first day of in-store sales of Apple’s latest products at Apple’s Fifth Avenue store in New York, US, on Friday, Sept. 20, 2024. Victor J. Blue | Bloomberg | Getty Images Apple announced a new iPhone model on Wednesday that is priced lower than its main iPhone models, which usually come out in September. The new iPhone is called iPhone 16e, and it will retail for $599 when it goes on ***** later this month. The new iPhone 16e doesn’t have a home button and fingerprint sensor, instead, it uses Apple’s FaceID scanner and modern design including a sensor notch at the top of the screen. It uses Apple’s A18 chip, which is also used in the main iPhone 16 models. The updated processor means that the iPhone 16e can run all the same apps and games that more expensive iPhones can run. It comes in ****** and white. The phone also includes Apple’s first cellular modem, which it calls C1. iPhones have used Qualcomm modems for the past few years. It also has a single camera lens, versus as many as three on the most advanced iPhones. Apple is releasing a new low-cost iPhone as sales have been mixed in recent quarters and Apple seeks growth for its most important product category. For the December quarter, Apple’s overall iPhone sales were down 1% on an annual basis. Apple still sold over $69 billion of phones in the *******. Low-end iPhones are important to Apple as it gets new customers into their ecosystem, and the new device supports Apple Intelligence, making it Apple’s least expensive new phone that can access features like image generation and notification summaries. Apple’s current models are the iPhone 16, which starts at $799, and the iPhone 16 Pro, which starts at $999. Before Tuesday’s launch, only the iPhone 16 and iPhone 15 Pro models were the only phones with access to Apple Intelligence. Apple has released a less-expensive iPhone model to round out the bottom of its lineup since 2016. The iPhone SE, as it was called then, got further updates in 2020 and 2022. Generally, the iPhone SE reuses an older design than the newest iPhones, but Apple updates its components such as its processor so it can receive ongoing software updates. After the old iPhone SE sells out, there won’t be any new iPhones with a fingerprint scanner. It was also less expensive than the iPhone 16e at $429. The launch also marks a new approach to Apple’s famous product launches, which garner media attention around the world. Previously, Apple would reveal new products live and on-stage, at a presentation on its campus in California. In 2020, Apple stopped inviting people to live launches and started screening marketing videos on its website and YouTube instead. In recent years, Apple has started to quietly release new products through press releases, such as the new Macs it announced last September. It may be testing how much buzz it can get for one of these quieter launches. Last week, ahead of Wednesday’s launch, Apple CEO Tim Cook posted a message on social media: “Get ready to meet the newest member of the family.” Zoom In IconArrows pointing outwards Source link #Apple #unveils #cheaper #iPhone #16e #powerful #run Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  6. Apple is running into some challenges. An options trade that pays off if the stock struggles from here Apple is running into some challenges. An options trade that pays off if the stock struggles from here As Apple Inc. approaches its all-time high, a series of mounting challenges have emerged. I’ll review an options trade that pays off if shares of the iPhone maker remain stuck or move lower. The latest iPhone 16 has not met sales expectations, signaling a more selective consumer. Additionally, AAPL faces stiff competition in their singular bet on the future of augmented reality, where rivals are putting pressure on the future of Apple’s Vision Pro. Moreover, Apple’s venture into artificial intelligence has been lackluster, failing to match the innovation of competitors who are setting the standard in AI. (Note, Apple just announced the release of a new value-priced iPhone that runs Apple Intelligence, but the stock is not responding.) Compounding these issues, the economic slowdown in China, a critical market for Apple, is dampening sales further. And with AAPL trading at a lofty 65% premium over its peers, it’s becoming increasingly untenable given an outlook that lacks the dynamism to justify such a premium. This puts AAPL in a spot of vulnerability, suggesting that a breakout to new all-time highs here is less likely. If we look at the chart of AAPL, it has underperformed the S & P 500 since hitting a new all-time high in December and has continued to print a series of lower lows and lower highs. This suggests that the stock might be due for a correction, especially considering its position near the top of its trading range. And if we look at the business, AAPL’s valuation is hard to justify, trading at an 65% premium relative to its peers, despite growth metrics that are only in line with the industry. While its superior profitability has historically justified a premium valuation, recent slowdown in revenues and EPS growth puts this at significant risk. Forward PE Ratio: 33x vs. Industry Median 20x Expected EPS Growth: 11% vs. Industry Median 10% Expected Revenue Growth: 6% vs. Industry Median 6% Net Margins: 24% vs. Industry Median 13% The trade Without an immediate catalyst on the horizon, my preference is to take a bearish to neutral outlook by harnessing options premiums by selling an Apr 4, $245/260 call vertical @ $5.74 Credit. This involves: Selling the April 4, $245 Call @ $8.00 Buying the April 4, $260 Call @ $2.26 View this Trade with Updated Prices at OptionsPlay The maximum reward is $574 if AAPL is below $245 at expiration. The maximum risk is $926 if AAPL rises above $260 at expiration. The breakeven point for this trade is at $249.74. This call vertical strategy leverages the anticipated pullback in AAPL’s stock price with limited risk. With AAPL’s current technical setup and premium valuation, this options trade aligns with the bearish thesis, providing a way to profit from a either a neutral or bearish outlook with defined risk. 7. DOGE’s Shocking $8 Billion Dollar Mistake Called Out DOGE’s Shocking $8 Billion Dollar Mistake Called Out That’s one way to pump up your numbers. Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency erroneously claimed a savings of $8 billion on a terminated contract this week that was actually worth just $8 million. That gaffe sheds off about 15 percent of its claimed total savings to date, which the group claimed was $55 billion on Monday despite line items posted to its website—including the incorrect $8 billion figure at the time—totaling just a quarter of that. These inconsistencies, among with a slew of other contracts listed as having a savings of $0, have called DOGE’s accounting into question as Musk keeps claiming he has saved Americans tens of billions more than what his own department touts. Savings are listed as $0 for some items on DOGE’s “Wall of Receipts.” / DOGE DOGE’s $8 billion gaffe was first spotted by The New York Times, which theorized the mistake may have came about because past versions of the since-canceled contract on the Federal Procurement Data System had incorrectly stated it was for $8 billion. The contract was earmarked for Immigration and Customs Enforcement and was to be doled out across approximately six years. Despite the initial typo, it was clear the contract was being paid out to total only $8 million—evidenced by its first two-and-a-half years costing the federal government just $2.5 million. At $8 billion, the contract for ICE’s “office of diversity and civil rights” would have been about the same as the entire annual budget of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention—hammering home that this was an obvious miscalculation to anyone familiar with federal spending. The contract, at its vastly inflated amount, was the largest savings DOGE claimed credit for on a contract on its site. The contract has since been adjusted by DOGE to reflect its actual value, of $7.992 billion less, but the department is yet to update its “estimated savings” of $55 billion at the top of its site. DOGE has not commented on its error publicly or offered an explanation for how it came to be. DOGE’s erroneous contract cancelation of $8 billion that was actually $8 million (as shown in their own screenshot linked to its website). / DOGE That gaffe isn’t the only head-scratching figure on DOGE’s site. Many, including the Times, noted that DOGE has been adding the full value of a contract into its total “savings” even if the majority of the contract had already been paid out and will not be recuperated. The ICE contract, for example, now lists a total savings of $8 million. That does not appear to be accurate, however, as it was canceled midway through completion and just $5.5 million was saved. While that difference may appear minimal alone, there are dozens—if not hundreds—of similar instances of this in the 1,127 nixed contracts listed on DOGE’s site. DOGE also appears to be claiming credit for a pair of office closures that were announced when Joe Biden was still president. Those closures are the National Archives centers in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, and in Fairfield, Ohio. DOGE’s site claims the latter location was a “True Termination – Agency Closed Office.” No other details are offered. Those centers’ approximate closing dates—as being sometimes in 2025—were announced on Aug. 1 before DOGE existed, but were included as a combined $780,308 in DOGE savings. 8. Microsoft trained an AI model on a game no one played Microsoft trained an AI model on a game no one played World models — AI algorithms capable of generating simulated environments — represent one forefront of machine learning. Today, Microsoft published new research in the journal Nature detailing Muse, a model capable of generating game visuals and controller inputs. Unexpectedly, it was born out of a training set Microsoft built from Bleeding Edge. If, like me, you had completely erased that game from your memory (or never knew it existed in the first place), Bleeding Edge is a 4 vs. 4 brawler developed by Ninja Theory, the studio better known for its work on the Hellblade series. Ninja Theory stopped updating Bleeding Edge less than a year after release, but Microsoft included a clause in the game’s EULA that gave it permission to record games people played online. So if you were one of the few people who played Bleeding Edge, congratulations, I guess: you helped the company make something out of a commercial flop. So what’s Muse good for anyway? Say a game designer at Blizzard wants to test an idea for a new hero in Overwatch 2. Rather than recruiting a team of programmers and artists to create code and assets that the studio may eventually scrap, they could instead use Muse to do the prototyping. Iteration is often the most time-consuming (and expensive) part of making a video game, so it’s easy to see why Microsoft would be interested in using AI to augment the process; it offers a way for the company to control runaway development costs. That’s because, according to Microsoft, Muse excels at a capability of world models the company calls persistency. “Persistency refers to a model’s ability to incorporate (or ‘persist’) user modifications into generated gameplay sequences, such as a character that is copy-pasted into a game visual,” says Katya Hofmann, senior principal research manager at Microsoft Research. Put another way, Muse can quickly adapt to new gameplay elements as they’re introduced in real-time. In one of the examples Microsoft shared, you can see the “player” character immediately react as two power-ups are introduced next to them. The model seemingly knows that the pickups are valuable and something players would go out of their way to obtain. So the simulation reflects that, in the process creating a convincing facsimile of a real Bleeding Edge match. According to Fatima Kardar, corporate vice president of gaming AI at Microsoft, the company is already using Muse to create a “real-time playable AI model trained on other first-party games,” and exploring how the technology might help it bring old games stuck on aging hardware to new audiences. Microsoft says Muse is a “first-of-its-kind” generative AI model, but that’s not quite right. World models aren’t new; in fact, Muse isn’t even the first one trained on a Microsoft game. In October, the company Decart debuted Oasis, which is capable of generating Minecraft levels. What Muse does show is how quickly these models are evolving. That said, there’s a long way for this technology to go, and Muse has some clear limitations. For one, the model generates visuals at a resolution of 300 x 180 pixels and about 10 frames per second. For now, the company is releasing Muse’s weights and sample data, and a way for researchers to see what the system is capable of. 9. Elon Musk will check with Trump on idea for tax refunds from DOGE savings Elon Musk will check with Trump on idea for tax refunds from DOGE savings U.S. President Donald Trump speaks next to Elon Musk and X Æ A-12, Musk’s son, in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington, D.C., U.S., February 11, 2025. Kevin Lamarque | Reuters Elon Musk on Tuesday said he’s going to touch base with President Donald Trump on a proposal to send Americans tax refund checks from money saved by the Department of Government Efficiency advisory group he heads. In a post on X, the Tesla and SpaceX chief executive said he “Will check with the President.” The remark came in response to a separate post from James Fishback, CEO of the Azoria investment firm, suggesting that Trump has the opportunity to issue a so-called “DOGE Dividend” in the form of a tax refund check sent to U.S. households funded by savings created by DOGE’s cost-cutting campaign. Musk has said that his goal is to cut federal spending by $2 trillion, out of a $6.75 trillion annual budget in the latest fiscal year ended last Sept. 30. If that were met, Fishback suggests taking 20% of that, or $400 billion, and distributing it to taxpayers. That would amount to approximately $5,000 per household, he said. “When a breach of this magnitude happens in the private sector, the counterparty, at minimum, refunds the customer since they failed to deliver what was promised,” Fishback wrote in his proposal. “It’s high time for the federal government to do the same, and refund money back to taxpayers given what DOGE has uncovered.” Government stimulus checks mailed to millions of taxpayers in 2020 during the Covid pandemic bore Trump’s signature, the first time a president’s name appeared on any IRS payments, the Associated Press reported at the time. According to DOGE, it has saved an estimated $55 billion through its efforts. However, recent reports suggest that the actual figure is likely far below that. On Wednesday, Bloomberg reported that the DOGE website only accounts for $16.6 billion of the $55 billion it claims to have saved. On Tuesday, the New York Times said DOGE mistakenly cited an $8 billion saving on a federal contract that was actually for $8 million instead. Meanwhile, many of DOGE’s efforts have been met with court challenges. But a federal judge on Tuesday denied a request to stop DOGE from accessing federal agencies’ computer systems or directing government worker firings while litigation is ongoing. 10. Say Goodbye to Cluttered Stashes, Path of Exile 2 Adds Map Stash Tabs Say Goodbye to Cluttered Stashes, Path of Exile 2 Adds Map Stash Tabs Old and new fans have been waiting for Path of Exile 2’s addition of map stash tabs for months, and it has finally arrived. Gone are the days of manually switching through stash tabs to unload your inventory because Waystone affinities haven’t existed yet. Here are all the details regarding the Map Stash Tabs in Path of Exile 2. How to Get the Map Stash Tab in Path of Exile 2 Screenshot by Prima Games The Map Stash Tab purchase appears in the in-game Path of Exile 2 store. Pressing “M” or opening the main menu and tapping “Microtransaction Shop” will open up the store. Look for the “Shop” tab and go under “Stashes” to see all the available types of stash tabs. The Map Stash Tab costs 150 Points or Coins. Depending on your platform, the methods of adding more balance or points to your account may be different. However, you can always go to the Path of Exile 2 website, log in to your main Path of Exile 2 account, open the store, and add Points to your account through the website. Once you have enough Points, you can buy the Map Stash Tab, and it’ll automatically be added to your stash with a unique in-game icon. What Are the Features of the Map Stash Tab in Path of Exile 2 Image via Grinding Gear Games The Map Stash Tab holds an astonishing 576 Waystones per tier. That is a big number, especially considering that Path of Exile 1 cannot hold close to 100 maps. Apart from holding that many Waystones, it has six separate sub-tabs where you can arrange Waystones according to your preference. Most players crave this feature because they spend currency to roll these maps to a specific standard and mass produce these Waystones before running them. It saves hours of their time and, most importantly, saves your hand from those precious extra clicks. Players may also automatically stash Waystones without opening the actual Map Stash Tab as long as the “Affinity” is checked. You can access this by right-clicking the Map Stash Tab and looking for the Affinity setting. 11. A new level unlocked – The Official Microsoft Blog A new level unlocked – The Official Microsoft Blog Muse, the first World and Human Action Model, could facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration, for example, when exploring gameplay ideas. Today Microsoft released Muse, a first-of-its-kind generative AI model that we are applying to gaming. But it’s so much more than that. What we’re sharing today is a huge step forward for gameplay ideation. And what’s even more exciting is what this breakthrough represents in our journey of building and using generative AI, and what industries, developers and creators of all interests will be enabled to do next. The impressive abilities we first witnessed with ChatGPT and GPT-4 to learn human language are now being matched by AI’s abilities to learn the mechanics of how things work, in effect developing a practical understanding of interactions in the world. As a computer scientist, this ability to understand and model a 3D world is something I and many other great researchers have pursued for over 10 years and, personally, I was not sure that it could be made possible with such speed and quality. In the case of Muse, just from observing human gameplay, this model develops a deep understanding of the environment, including its dynamics and how it evolves over time in response to actions. This unlocks the ability to rapidly iterate, remix and create in video games so developers can eventually create immersive environments and unleash their full creativity. Beyond gaming, I’m excited by the potential of this capability to enable AI assistants that understand and help visualize things, from reconfiguring the kitchen in your home to redesigning a retail space to building a digital twin of a factory floor to test and explore different scenarios. All these things are just now becoming possible with AI. From the perspective of computer science research, it’s pretty amazing, and the future applications of this are likely to be transformative for creators. — At Microsoft, we have a long history of collaboration between research and engineering. Today, as we release Muse, we are also announcing Azure AI Foundry Labs, where the AI community can explore the latest from Microsoft Research. Azure AI Foundry Labs will help accelerate the transition from research to solutions, bringing new ideas to the broader community to help shape the future of AI. Learn more. 12. When did life begin on Earth? New evidence reveals a shocking story When did life begin on Earth? New evidence reveals a shocking story Earth is some 4.5 billion years old. When it formed from colliding rocks around a dim, young sun, it was presumably lifeless, and geologists long thought that life didn’t emerge for a billion years or more. This idea came from analysis of moon rocks brought back from the Apollo landings, which indicated Earth was pummelled by space rocks between 4 billion and 3.8 billion years ago – an event called the Late Heavy Bombardment. The implication was that the origin of life as we know it must have begun after that, since any earlier organisms would have been blitzed. “There’s two issues with that,” says Philip Donoghue at the University of Bristol, ***. First, models suggest that some life could have survived deep in the oceans. More damningly, it now seems that the Late Heavy Bombardment didn’t actually happen. The Apollo missions only created the impression of a huge bombardment over a brief ******* because they all collected rocks of a similar age. We now know that, early in Earth’s history, large impacts occurred sporadically over hundreds of millions of years. However, we also know that a body the size of Mars collided with Earth just after it was formed, vaporising the planet’s surface. “If life originated before then, it would have been wiped out,” says Donoghue. Earth’s oldest rocks Life began when inert matter self-organised into living systems, but, despite decades of research, how that happened remains a mystery. Figuring out when it happened is also a big challenge because the fossil record gets worse the further back… Source link #life #Earth #evidence #reveals #shocking #story Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  13. N.Y.U. College Republicans President Resigns After Remarks About Barron Trump N.Y.U. College Republicans President Resigns After Remarks About Barron Trump The New York University chapter president of the College Republicans resigned this week, yielding to pressure from the national organization after she was prominently quoted in a Vanity Fair profile saying that Barron Trump, President Trump’s youngest son, was “sort of like an oddity on campus.” In the profile, published on Feb. 12, Kaya Walker, the chapter’s president, suggested that the president’s son, an 18-year-old freshman at N.Y.U., did not appear to be assimilating into campus life and was reclusive. “He goes to class, he goes home,” she told the magazine. In the interview, Ms. Walker questioned whether the university, a liberal bastion in Greenwich Village with many famous Hollywood graduates, was the right fit for Mr. Trump’s son. And, according to the magazine, she recalled how a professor had joked about his presence at N.Y.U. — “he doesn’t really belong here.” Will Donahue, the president of the College Republicans of America, said in a statement on Tuesday that Ms. Walker had not obtained prior authorization from the national organization before speaking to Vanity Fair. Chapter presidents, he said, must get clearance before “engaging with media outlets known for editorial biases against conservative voices.” “During the conversation, she was presented with a narrative about Barron Trump that was clearly framed in a partisan manner,” the statement said. “Rather than redirecting the inquiry to our communications team or refuting the premise, she used language that did not align with C.R.A.’s standards of professionalism and responsibility, inadvertently contributing to a misleading and negative portrayal.” The College Republicans recommended on Sunday that Ms. Walker step down, and she did, according to the group, which also said that it was inviting Barron Trump to become a member. Ms. Walker, 21, did not immediately respond on Tuesday to requests for comment. A student profile for her on the university’s website lists her as a senior who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in international relations and French. It said that she had recently completed an internship in the Bronx District Attorney’s Office. Condé Nast, the parent company of Vanity Fair, did not immediately respond on Tuesday to a request for comment. Since his enrollment in 2024 at N.Y.U., where he is a first-year student at the Stern School of Business, Barron Trump has been a focus of intense fascination. In contrast with some of his half siblings, he is not active on social media and rarely makes public statements. The White House and a spokesman for Melania Trump, the first lady, who has been fiercely protective of her son’s privacy, did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Tuesday. During an appearance on “Fox & Friends” in December, her first interview since the election, Mrs. Trump described her son as playing a pivotal role in her husband’s victory. 15. Yoshida: Xbox games on PS5 a ‘win’ for PlayStation owners Yoshida: Xbox games on PS5 a ‘win’ for PlayStation owners Former SIE president Shuhei Yoshida has discussed Xbox’s new multiplatform strategy, and described it as “a win” for PlayStation owners. Speaking during an interview following his exit from PlayStation, the former head of PlayStation first-party was asked about Microsoft‘s decision to bring Xbox titles to PlayStation. Yoshida said that becoming the “********* platform” was his nightmare, as it would’ve made it difficult to maintain its first-party development. “I think it’s a win for PlayStation owners, they didn’t have access [to those games] before,” Yoshida told the Sacred Symbols + podcast. “I explained in one interview that it was always my nightmare when I was a managing first-party, I’m lucky it didn’t happen, that if PlayStation became the ********* platform, it would be impossible to maintain the first-party development because the best creators would leave. They are not just creatives, they are business people as well, they want their games to reach the biggest audience as well. “It’s very natural if a platform is the ********* and if I was able to release a game on the ********* platform only, it’s unsustainable. That was the nightmare,” he said. “Looking at the install base of Xbox hardware, it’s kind of natural to understand what they are doing, and it’s pretty straightforward.” It’s been almost a year since Microsoft first announced plans to bring a wave of games to PlayStation and Nintendo Switch, in what appeared to be a significant change of strategy, starting with Pentiment, Hi-Fi Rush, Sea of Thieves and Grounded. Since then, PS5 versions of Indiana Jones, Doom: The Dark Ages, and other games previously exclusive to Microsoft platforms have been announced for PlayStation. It’s expected that Microsoft will delve further into its back catalog to bring more titles to PlayStation, in what is a largely unprecedented move. Head of Microsoft Gaming Phil Spencer recently said there are now “no red lines” for which games it could bring to PS5 next. 16. We are finally getting to grips with how plate tectonics started We are finally getting to grips with how plate tectonics started On Earth, the land moves. Over millions of years, continents shift and the entire surface of the planet reshapes itself. The driver of all this is plate tectonics: Earth’s surface is divided into several dozen plates, which move horizontally. Figuring out how this got started, however, has proved surprisingly challenging. Research has come up with dates ranging from 800 million years ago to 4 billion years ago, not long after the planet formed. Now, the reason for this huge discrepancy is finally becoming apparent. Today, plate tectonics is a global process. Everywhere, plates are imperceptibly moving. At mid-ocean ridges, hot magma oozes up from inside Earth, forming new crust and pushing the plates apart. Where two collide, one is forced under the other, destroying it, in a process called subduction. Things were very different when Earth was new – notably, it was much hotter, which meant the rocks of the crust were softer. But what that crust was doing is unclear. Some researchers argue there was a stagnant lid: the crust barely moved, leaving the same rocks at the surface for hundreds of millions of years. Others think plates moved vertically rather than horizontally, as denser rocks sank and less dense ones rose. Somehow, the crust divided into plates and they started moving horizontally. But when? A decade ago, many researchers argued that plate tectonics began between 3 billion and 3.2 billion years ago, says Nadja Drabon at Harvard University. Several lines of evidence pointed to big changes at that time, including the first evidence of minerals that only form… Source link #finally #grips #plate #tectonics #started Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Forget the Magnificent 7, buy these high-quality alternatives instead, Piper Sandler says Forget the Magnificent 7, buy these high-quality alternatives instead, Piper Sandler says While the “Magnificent Seven” helped lead the market higher in 2024, accounting for more than half of the S & P 500’s 23.3% gain, there are some stocks investors should eye for 2025 instead, according to Piper Sandler. “Even though the Magnificent 7 are some of the most successful companies in the world, they don’t outperform every single year,” Piper analyst Michael Kantrowitz wrote in a Monday note. “So far in 2025, only META is significantly leading the S & P 500 and 4 of the Mag 7 stocks are in the red YTD.” Meta Platform shares have risen more than 22% year to date. The S & P 500 has gained more than 4% in the same *******. “Many investors associate the Mag 7 with the growth trade as these stocks have certainly played a significant role in the outperformance of growth indices in recent years,” Kantrowitz wrote. “Nonetheless, growth indices and growth factors have managed to be leaders in 2025 even without strength across the Mag 7.” Taking that into account, Piper highlights some large-cap technology alternatives to the Magnificent Seven. The firm screened for quality cyclical names, specifically those with high cash flow return on investment, correlation to PMI, earnings momentum and free cash flow yield. Here are some of the stocks that appeared. Shares of chipmaker Qualcomm have seen meaningful gains over the past year, climbing almost 14% in the past 12 months. In 2025’s young year, the stock has already outperformed the S & P 500 with a year-to-date gain of around 13% – more than three times that of the index. Some analysts are worried about the company’s growth trajectory moving forward, even with its strong forecast for the current quarter . For instance, Morgan Stanley analyst Joseph Moore said in a note following Qualcomm’s latest quarterly results that the rise of ******** telecommunications and smartphone giant Huawei could serve as a headwind for Qualcomm. That company recently saw a 22% increase in revenue in 2024 compared to the year before. That said, more than half of the 41 analysts covering it on Wall Street are bullish on the name for the months ahead, as 23 have a strong buy or buy rating, according to LSEG. They also see sizable gains from here, as its consensus price target of around $201 implies nearly 16% upside from Tuesday’s close. In software, Fortinet shares – which hit a new 52-week high during Tuesday’s session – have seen a nearly 67% gain over the past 12 months, almost three times that of the S & P 500’s in that *******. Additionally, its year-to-date gain of about 21% is more than five times that of the index’s gains in the *******. FTNT 1Y mountain FTNT, 1-year Earlier this month, the company’s fourth-quarter results topped the Street’s estimates, and management issued strong full-year revenue guidance for 2025. The stock is hold-rated among analysts, however. To be sure, 16 out of 42 total analysts have a strong buy or buy rating, while 25 analysts have taken a neutral stance with a hold rating. Moreover, Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s nearly 46% gain over the last year has also outperformed the broader market. 18. Beterbiev vs Bivol 2: Inside Joseph Parker’s camp for fight against Daniel Dubois Beterbiev vs Bivol 2: Inside Joseph Parker’s camp for fight against Daniel Dubois Having breakfast at 14:00, wearing white socks to improve speed and targeting the jab – these are just few of the things Joseph Parker is doing in his aim to dethrone IBF heavyweight world champion Daniel Dubois. The New Zealander targets becoming a two-time heavyweight champion when he faces Briton Dubois on Saturday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The 33-year-old is on a five-fight winning streak and his head coach Andy Lee spoke to the 5 Live Boxing with Steve Bunce podcast about changes that have inspired the run of form. “Joe used to always wear ****** socks,” revealed Lee. “Manny (Emanuel Steward) always used to say wear white socks, white boots. When you wear white boots you feel faster.” The last time Parker wore ****** socks in a fight was during his 2021 win over Junior Fa, but wore a combination of white socks and ****** boots for his last contest against Zhilei Zhang 11 months ago. Lee, who was trained by coaching great Steward as a fighter himself, joined Parker’s team after the Fa bout. The Kiwi is the underdog against Dubois, who has won his last three fights by knockout. Dubois, 27, has bounced back from a heartbreak loss by Oleksandr Usyk in 2023 and is one win away from potentially facing the Ukrainian again, this time in an undisputed bout. Lee said the Londoner may be a big puncher, but his jab is his strongest weapon. “You have to make it his biggest weakness, you have to make him uncertain and hesitant in throwing it,” added Lee. “That means stepping back from it, taking the range away, slipping inside, stepping outside and countering it, that’s where I think the fight will be won and lost. “We’ve trained every day in trying to take the jab away from Dubois and if we can, that will go a long way to Joe winning the fight.” Source link #Beterbiev #Bivol #Joseph #Parkers #camp #fight #Daniel #Dubois Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Emergency supplies arrive in Kimberley towns after Cyclone Zelia causes disruptions Emergency supplies arrive in Kimberley towns after Cyclone Zelia causes disruptions Supermarket giant Woolworths has mobilised emergency supply efforts to restock shelves in communities cut off by flooding in the wake of Cyclone Zelia, with fresh produce and essential items enroute to Broome and Derby. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services secured a C-130 Hercules aircraft from the *********** Defence Force to airlift critical supplies. The ADF-crewed aircraft departed RAAF Base Pearce at 11am on Wednesday, arriving at Broome International Airport at 2.35pm with 10 tonnes of goods, including potable water and non-perishable food. The supplies have been distributed between major Broome supermarkets Woolworths and Coles. Woolworths has been working closely with the WA Government to open alternative supply routes and facilitate emergency deliveries to affected areas. “We thank our store and supply chain teams for their tireless efforts over the last week, and our customers for their patience and understanding,” a Woolworths spokesperson said. “We continue to ask customers to only buy what they need as we work hard to replenish our stock levels.” Camera IconDFES organised two resupply missions to support Kimberley communities impacted by road closures following ex-Tropical Cyclone Zelia. 21. 2 Cryptocurrencies That Could Soar in 2025 and 1 to Avoid 2 Cryptocurrencies That Could Soar in 2025 and 1 to Avoid 2025 was supposed to be the year the crypto market skyrocketed in value. Remember all the pro-crypto optimism at the beginning of the year? Well, nearly two months into the year, things haven’t quite worked out as planned. Many top cryptocurrencies are down for the year, and a true standout performer has yet to emerge. For that reason, you’ll need to be more selective in picking cryptocurrencies in 2025. Here’s why Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) and XRP (CRYPTO: XRP) are my top two picks. The no-brainer crypto investment of the year is Bitcoin. The Trump administration has made no secret of its support for Bitcoin, and you can be confident that its price will become a primary benchmark for evaluating the success of the administration’s pro-crypto policies. That said, Bitcoin has struggled to stay above $100,000 this year. Seemingly, every week of the year, a new concern about the future of Bitcoin has surfaced. First, there was concern that the Trump team wasn’t moving fast enough to make America the “crypto capital of the world” and to establish a strategic Bitcoin reserve. Then, there was concern over the potential impact of tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China. And now, there’s concern about the return of inflationary pressures to the U.S. economy. But don’t worry. The consensus opinion seems to be that Bitcoin will hit at least $150,000 by the end of the year. According to Standard Chartered, it will reach $200,000 by the end of the year. So, even though the short-term outlook for Bitcoin might appear cloudy, the medium-term outlook is sunny indeed. Things get even better when you consider the long-term outlook for Bitcoin. Cathie Wood of Ark Invest recently doubled down on her $1.5 million price forecast. She thinks the world’s most popular cryptocurrency will hit that target by 2030, if not earlier. She points to the growing institutional adoption of Bitcoin, the spectacular success of the new spot Bitcoin ETFs, and the continued integration of Bitcoin into the global financial system. If you’re willing to take on more risk, XRP could be one cryptocurrency to consider. Over the past three months, it has increased by a jaw-dropping 400%. Those spectacular gains can primarily be attributed to the perceived impact of the Trump administration’s pro-crypto regulatory approach. For more than four years now, Ripple, the company behind the XRP token, has been locked in an epic battle with the SEC over its status. The SEC claims XRP is a security, while Ripple claims it is a commodity. Story Continues The hope now is that Trump’s recent shakeup at the SEC will help tilt the playing field in Ripple’s favor. If Ripple can resolve its regulatory issues once and for all, the price of XRP could skyrocket. As a result, it’s easy to find price targets above the $10 mark for XRP. It’s up to you, of course, to decide how much of this potential upside has already been priced into XRP. After all, the all-time high for XRP is only $3.84. And even if XRP soars to the $4 mark, you’re only talking about 60% gains for the year. Image source: Getty Images. On the positive, if you’re an XRP investor, there are two significant catalysts on the horizon. And both have the potential to send XRP soaring. The first is the potential introduction of spot XRP ETFs by mid-2025. According to JPMorgan Chase, this could result in as much as $8 billion in new investor money flowing into XRP over the next 12 months. The second is the potential addition of XRP to the U.S. government’s proposed national digital asset stockpile. At one time, it looked like this would be a Bitcoin-only strategic reserve. But top executives at Ripple have been maneuvering behind the scenes, pushing to have XRP included in the mix as well. The reason is simple: Any sustained buying by the government could send XRP’s price into the stratosphere. The one cryptocurrency to avoid in 2025 is Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH). Yes, Ethereum has been one of the top-performing cryptocurrencies over the past decade and is still the world’s second-most popular cryptocurrency, with a massive $320 billion market cap. And yes, Ethereum is still the clear market leader in just about every niche of the blockchain world. But here’s the thing: After a decade of dominance, rivals are starting to catch up. Solana (CRYPTO: SOL), for example, is now the world’s sixth-largest cryptocurrency and has emerged as Ethereum’s top rival. And even if you’re not a fan of Solana, a handful of other potential “Ethereum killers” are lurking among the top 50 cryptocurrencies. To some degree, the market is starting to recognize that Ethereum’s long run of dominance may be ending. It’s down 20% year to date, and there’s growing dissension among top Ethereum developers about the appropriate long-term strategy to follow. Moreover, the founder of Ethereum, Vitalik Buterin, recently dropped a cryptic hint that things are much worse than many people realize. That’s a situation I’d rather avoid for now. 2025 has been much more volatile than people assumed at the beginning of the year. Many (myself included) thought top cryptocurrencies would go parabolic this year. They haven’t. As a result, I’ve scaled back my list of potential cryptocurrencies to buy, and you should do the same. Ever feel like you missed the boat in buying the most successful stocks? Then you’ll want to hear this. Next Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater Game To Launch This Summer – Report Next Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater Game To Launch This Summer – Report The next Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater game is reportedly going to be released this summer, seemingly backing up the claims of another pro skater earlier this week who said that a new one is coming. According to leaker eXtas1s, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4, known internally at Microsoft as Project Chicago, will launch in June during Microsoft’s currently unannounced Xbox Summer Showcase presentation. It’ll reportedly be shadow-dropped on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, as well as Game Pass. The leaker couldn’t confirm if the game was also coming to Switch 2, however. Yesterday, pro skater Tyshawn Jones claimed that he was in an upcoming Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater game even though Activision had not announced a new one yet. Some version of Tony Hawk’s’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 was reportedly rejected by Activision after the launch of 1 + 2 in 2020, but things may have changed under Microsoft’s leadership since then. While Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 isn’t on Game Pass, it would make sense that 3 + 4 would be given that Activision is now part of Microsoft. Microsoft has shadow-dropped games onto Game Pass to great success in the past. Hi-Fi Rush garnered critical acclaim, and Team Ninja recently shadow-dropped Ninja Gaiden 2 ****** last month as a surprise to tide players over until Ninja Gaiden 4’s release later this year. If Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 gets revealed, expect to see PlayStation’s logo on the trailer. 24. Palworld Has Surpassed 32 Million Players in Its First Year Palworld Has Surpassed 32 Million Players in Its First Year Palworld developers Pocket Pair have announced that game has surpassed 32 million players in its first year. Announced on X (formerly Twitter), the company said that in its first year of release the game has surpassed 32 million players across Steam, Xbox Series S|X, Xbox One, and PS5. The game first released on January 19, 2024 and became an overnight success, achieving one million copies sold in its first eight hours. Its success continued, going on to sell two million copies in 24 hours, three million in 40 hours, and eight million in six days. On January 27, Palworld recorded 2,101,867 concurrent players on Steam and made it one of the highest-player counts of all time on steam, behind that of PUBG. As of February 22, 2024, it was announced that the game sold 15 million copies on Steam and had reached 10 million players on Xbox. Its success hasn’t been without issues though as following its highly successful launch, the game was criticised for its creatures, known as ‘Pals’, for being too similar, or in some cases plagiarizing Pokémon. The accusations seemed to have that much weight, that in September 2024, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company filed a lawsuit against Pocketpair for infringement of patent rights. 25. As US Sidelines Ukraine from Peace Talks, Ministry Points to ‘Faith Under Russian Terror’ As US Sidelines Ukraine from Peace Talks, Ministry Points to ‘Faith Under Russian Terror’ In the fallout from the talks between U.S. and Russian officials about starting negotiations to end the war in Ukraine, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy and President Trump are in a war of words after Ukraine was left out of the meeting. On Tuesday, Trump appeared to blame Ukraine for the war with Russia and said it was time for the country to hold new elections. Zelenskyy says Trump is “living in a disinformation bubble” and has accused the White House of trying to weaken his country. Trump said Zelenskyy should have made a deal with Moscow to avoid conflict in the first place. He also expressed disappointment that Ukrainian officials complained they didn’t have a seat at the negotiating table. “Today I heard, well, we weren’t invited. Well, you’ve been there for three years. You should have ended it three years. You should have never started it. You could have made a deal,” Trump said. While the U.S.-Russia meeting in Saudi Arabia laid the foundation for negotiating a peace deal, Mission Eurasia warns that Russia has specifically targeted Ukrainian pastors and churches, issuing a report called “Faith Under Russian Terror.” Mission Eurasia’s President Sergey Rakhuba said, “Whatever you see in that report. And that’s hundreds of churches seized, destroyed, pastors arrested. You know, so there is no room for any other faith-based organization or church except the Russian Orthodox Church. It’s critical to pay attention to it.” After three years of war, Ukrainian evangelical leaders, like Rakhuba, remain steadfast in urging Americans to support Ukraine. One pastor tells CBN News while the war has tested the faith of many, it has also made it stronger. Pastor Dmytro Kolesnyk of Hosanna ******** Church in Lviv said, “Many Christians realized that their faith was not as strong as they thought. We lost part of our members who left the country, but another part understands that their faith is growing during this problem… Many people understand that Christ is real today.” Pastor Kolesnyk calls for a just peace – one that protects freedom, faith, and sovereignty. He credits American churches for helping Ukrainian congregations survive the war – grateful he’s still able to freely worship God without fear or persecution. “The same Russian Orthodox Church, they are prohibit(ed), but it’s not about religious persecutions. Sorry, we have united… unity. We have peace between our confessions, and we have big freedom in our country. Big religions free,” Pastor Kolesnyk said. In addition to this persecution, the sense of betrayal here runs deep. This stems from Russia’s violation of the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, which led to Ukraine giving up its nuclear arsenal in exchange for assurances of territorial integrity and political independence. Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea broke that deal and casts a shadow over whatever peace agreement might result from U.S.-led talks. “Ukrainians are expecting a lot more from the U.S. so that their country is not used as a bargaining chip,” Rakhuba said. “There is a people there, 40 million lives, and if we don’t defend them as we promised, if we don’t help them in their fight for their freedom and sovereignty, of course Putin will not stop at any of this so-called ‘peace talks.'” The Saudi Arabia talks also included a potential summit between Presidents Trump and Putin. While the outcome of the negotiation remains uncertain, Ukraine’s evangelicals maintain their unwavering faith in God remains strong. ***Please sign up for CBN Newsletters and download the CBN News app to ensure you keep receiving the latest news from a distinctly Christian perspective.***   Source link #Sidelines #Ukraine #Peace #Talks #Ministry #Points #Faith #Russian #Terror Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
