Mini Computers Are One Thing But Running Doom in Minecraft Isn’t Something You’d Expect to See
There’s a common phrase that goes on in the tech world, ‘but can it run DOOM?’, which has become synonymous with trying to run the classic, but still popular original 1993 version of DOOM on the most absurd hardware combinations possible.
People have managed to get DOOM running on all sorts of hardware – including but not limited to calculators, microwaves and even pregnancy test kits. A recent endeavour from a particular modder has managed to go one step further – running the game within Minecraft using its various intricacies which is quite an amazing feat.
Modder manages to run DOOM inside of Minecraft

Showcasing his feats on the r/Doom subreddit, user ModPunchTree has managed to make DOOM (the classic, 1993 version – at least the one the recreation is based on) run inside of Minecraft.
Minecraft modding isn’t exactly new, but having a playable game inside of another is truly mind boggling, and showcases the extent to which the developer went to make it work. In short, u/ModPunchTree made use of an already established ‘Redstone computer’ in their Minecraft save – known as IRIS.
Redstone is a peculiar item in Minecraft, allowing players to build complex circuitry from it, which many have used to simulate electrical components, which combined together can be used to make a virtual CPU/APU system.
Minecraft has a very active modding scene | Image Credit: Mojang
It is even more difficult than it sounds to be in reality, and is quite an impressive undertaking.
IRIS was used to separately program specific code for a game that played and looked like DOOM using no command blocks, mods or data packs of the sort. It is this very recreation of DOOM that is being showcased here.
It’s not perfect though, as renders are done through software (as IRIS has no GPU yet), with each frame taking approximately 23 seconds to render. Additionally, the game is super limited in its current build, with players only having access to the E1M1 map, and the starter pistol. The game’s sprites were handcrafted, and the overall project seems like a massive undertaking.
It’s not just DOOM though, the creator plans to showcase more content in the near future using IRIS.
And now, Minecraft can indeed run DOOM, and it remains as one of the more unexpected ways to play the game. Hopefully, with the advancement of IRIS we see more cool concepts being pushed forward.
Modding is fun and running things in a way it was never designed to run is such an intriguing concept

One might ask after seeing this project – Why? To which a perfect counter response would be, Why not? After all, running apps and hardware configurations in the most ridiculous way possible is part of the charm when it comes to tinkering with stuff.
You take it on as a personal challenge, to try and achieve the impossible – even if quite impractical. Tinkerers can relate, and there is just something that itches at the back of your head, telling you to try the most ridiculous, impossible project possible.
Achieving success, even if in a proof of concept form is the reward in itself, and the challenges help one learn a lot through the way. Or simply put, people like being able to tinker with stuff.
Modding has always been about breaking the rules and doing things in an unconventional way, and it is this spirit that keeps the tech community so diverse and full of life.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Sunday that a possible raw materials agreement between Ukraine and the United States does not include military security guarantees.
“But what it does include is an implicit guarantee that if the United States of America is heavily invested in the economic future, I call it an economic security guarantee,” Bessent told US television.
The agreement is part of US President Donald Trump’s long-term negotiating strategy for peace between Ukraine and Russia.
The envisaged agreement “involves strategic minerals, energy and state owned enterprises,” Bessent said.
When asked whether it could still be signed next week, he said: “I’m quite hopeful.”
Moscow does not like the idea of the US making a deal with Ukraine, the Treasury chief emphasized. This should be another incentive for Ukraine to sign the agreement.
Bessent, who recently travelled to Kiev to negotiate the agreement, expressed his disappointment that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has not yet signed it.
In the Financial Times, Bessent provided details of the proposed agreement. Under the terms, countries that have not contributed to defending Ukraine’s sovereignty cannot beneift from the investments, he wrote.
Revenues of the Ukrainian government from natural resources, infrastructure and other assets would be paid into a fund that is geared towards the long-term reconstruction and development of Ukraine. The US would have a say in economic and administrative matters.
Trump has linked US aid to Ukraine, which was attacked by Russia, to access to its rare earth materials. The deposits are considered economically lucrative and strategically significant.
Zelensky rejected the initial draft and has consistently said that Ukraine needs security guarantees. Trump said over the weekend that he expects an agreement with Kiev to be reached shortly.

This week, American YouTuber Sean Evans will be talking to Louis Theroux about his show Hot Ones – and whether he’d ever have Kanye West on as a guest.
But that’s not all the week has in store.
Gaming fans have Pokémon Day and the release of Monster Hunter Wilds to look forward to, Pamela Anderson’s new film The Last Showgirl is coming out, and Blackpink star Lisa is dropping her debut solo album.
Read on for this week’s biggest releases…
Hot wings, hot questionsGetty Images
Sean Evans is best known for his YouTube show Hot Ones, where he interviews celebrities while they eat chicken wings that get progressively spicier.
But the tables are being turned on Tuesday, when he’s appearing as a guest on Louis Theroux’s podcast.
I’ve been told we can expect the pair to discuss the art of interviewing, the evolution of Sean’s career, and some of the most memorable moments from Hot Ones – including the viral DJ Khaled and Conan O’Brien episodes.
The pair will also chat about Sean buying the Hot Ones brand from Buzzfeed, and Louis asks whether he would ever consider inviting Kanye West on the show.
A monster week for gaming fans
By Tom Richardson, Newsbeat reporter
You know the saying… you wait for one creature-collecting gaming franchise from Japan and then two come along at once (or at least, we think that’s it).
For those who celebrate, Thursday is Pokémon Day – when fans of the long-running series get a glimpse of what to expect in the coming year.
We’ll be watching closely for updates on Pokémon Legends Z-A – the upcoming Nintendo Switch game teased at last year’s Pokémon Presents showcase – and hoping to learn more about plans for The Year of Eevee (2025 is dedicated to the popular bushy-tailed character). You can watch the presentation on the Pokémon YouTube from 14:00 GMT.
And on Friday, it’s the long-awaited release of Monster Hunter Wilds (PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox), from Resident Evil and Street Fighter developer Capcom. Originally a big hit in Japan, recent entries in the series have found a huge worldwide audience.
This sequel returns players to The Forbidden Lands, tasking them with, er, hunting monsters of increasing size and strength. But the similarities with Pokémon end there. You almost certainly wouldn’t want a soft toy version of these bad boys.
Pamela Anderson’s ‘comeback’ roleGetty Images
Pamela Anderson is back in the spotlight.
The Baywatch actress, who first rose to prominence in the 90s, is now starring in The Last Showgirl, a film about a woman who must plan for her future after her show abruptly closes following a 30-year-run.
It’s a film about second chances – and plenty of critics have described this as 57-year-old Pamela’s own comeback.
But when I met her recently, she said she wasn’t sure she’d call it that. “I would say it’s just a new chapter,” she told me, adding that everything that went before was “bootcamp and learning experiences”.
“I’ve always been fascinated with the craft of acting, and I just wasn’t getting the opportunity to put what I was craving into something.”
My full interview with Pamela will be out later this week – and the film is released in *** cinemas on Friday.
Lisa’s debut solo album
I feel like Blackpink singer Lisa is everywhere right now.
She’s just taken on her first major acting role in season three of The White Lotus, HBO’****** TV show about rich entitled holiday-makers, which is set this time in her homeland, Thailand.
And on Friday, Lisa – whose full name is Lalisa Manoba – is releasing her first ever solo album independent from her famous girl group.
Entitled Alter Ego, it includes singles Moonlit Floor, which interpolates Sixpence None the Richer’s classic track Kiss Me, as well as New Woman featuring Spanish star Rosalía, and hip hop track Rockstar.
Other highlights this week…International Booker Prize longlist is announced on TuesdayBanks’s new album, Off With Her Head, is released on FridayEverything is Recorded’s new album, Temporary, is also released on FridayThe Brit Awards take place on SaturdayThe Oscars take place on Sunday

Netanyahu says Israel won’t allow Syrian forces ‘south of Damascus’
JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel will not allow Syria’s new army or the insurgent group that led the ouster of former President Bashar Assad to “enter the area south of Damascus” as his government made clear Israeli forces would stay in parts of southern Syria for an indefinite *******.
Netanyahu’s comments Sunday at a military graduation led to new concerns over the Israeli presence, and sway, in a swath of southern Syria as Damascus’ new leaders attempt to consolidate control after years of civil war.
“Take note: We will not allow HTS forces or the new Syrian army to enter the area south of Damascus,” Netanyahu said, referring to Syria’s new authorities as well as Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the main former rebel group.

“We demand the complete demilitarization of southern Syria in the provinces of Quneitra, Daraa and Suwayda from the forces of the new regime. Likewise, we will not tolerate any threat to the Druze community in southern Syria.”
There was no immediate response from Syrian authorities.
Defense Minister Israel Katz added that Israeli forces will remain on the peak of Mt. Hermon in southern Syria and in a buffer zone “for an indefinite ******* of time to protect our communities and thwart any threat.”
He said Israeli forces have built two posts on the mountain and another seven in the buffer zone “to ensure defense and offense against any challenge.”
After the fall of Assad in December, Israel seized the U.N.-patrolled buffer zone on Syrian territory. The zone was set up under a 1974 ceasefire agreement. Syria’s new authorities and U.N. officials have called for Israel to withdraw.
Meanwhile, Netanyahu’s government has been under pressure to protect Israelis living near border areas in the north.
Katz said Israel will “strengthen ties with friendly populations in the region,” notably the Druze, a religious ********* who live in both southern Syria and in Israel’s Golan Heights, where Druze navigate their historically Syrian identity while living under Israeli rule.
“We will not tolerate any threat to the Druze community in southern Syria,” Netanyahu said.
More broadly, Israeli forces “will not allow hostile forces to establish themselves and be present in the security zone in southern Syria from here to Damascus. And we will act against any threat,” Katz said.

Moise Kean: Fiorentina striker taken to hospital after collapsing on the pitch
Fiorentina striker Moise Kean collapsed on the pitch and was taken to hospital after sustaining a head injury during Sunday’s 1-0 defeat at Hellas Verona.
The former Everton, Paris St-Germain and Juventus forward’s face collided with Pawel Dawidowicz’s knee as he fell while battling for the ball in the 58th minute.
Kean, 24, carried on playing following treatment before losing his balance and falling to the floor in the 64th minute. Players from both teams alerted medics before the Serie A match was halted.
The Italy striker, who has 15 goals in the top flight this season, was taken off on a stretcher and was seen wearing a neck brace before being taken to hospital.
“Moise Kean, during the match against Verona, suffered a head trauma. [He] is in hospital for tests,” Fiorentina said.
When play resumed, Hellas Verona midfielder Antoine Bernede scored the only goal of the game in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
In December, Fiorentina midfielder Edoardo Bove collapsed on the pitch during a game against Inter Milan, which led to the match being abandoned.
Bove had successful surgery following the incident and had a removable defibrillator fitted to prevent fatal cardiac arrest.

******* election result: Friedrich Merz voted new leader as CDU/CSU secures majority, far-right AfD surges
******* election result: Friedrich Merz voted new leader as CDU/CSU secures majority, far-right AfD surges
Germany’s opposition conservatives won the national election, putting leader Friedrich Merz on track to be the next chancellor while the far-right Alternative for Germany came in second, its best-ever result, exit polls showed.
Following a campaign roiled by a series of violent attacks and interventions by US President Donald Trump’s administration, the conservative CDU/CSU bloc won 28.5 per cent of the vote, followed by the AfD with 20 per cent, an exit poll published by ZDF public broadcaster showed on Sunday.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democrats (SPD) tumbled to their worst result since World War Two, with 16.5 per cent of the vote share, according to the ZDF exit poll.
The Greens were on 12 per cent while the **** hovered around the five per cent threshold to enter parliament. A late campaign surge by the far left Die Linke party gave it nine per cent of the vote while breakaway leftist party BSW led by Sahra Wagenknecht squeezed in on five per cent.
The results set the stage for protracted coalition talks, which likely mean a three-way coalition made up of one or two of the three same parties that were part of Mr Scholz’s unpopular alliance that collapsed in November.
Mr Merz, 69, has no previous government experience but has promised to provide greater leadership than Scholz and to liaise more with key allies, restoring Germany to the heart of Europe.
A brash economic liberal who has shifted the conservatives to the right, he is considered the antithesis of former conservative Chancellor Angela Merkel, who led Germany for 16 years.
Short of a majority in an increasingly fragmented political landscape, however, his conservatives will have to sound out partners to form a coalition.
Mr Merz told supporters the country would “quickly regain our ability to act so that we can do the right thing at home, so that we are once again present in Europe, so that the world can see that Germany is being governed reliably again”.
“Now we will talk together and it’s important to form a government as soon as possible. The world outside is not waiting for us,” Mr Merz said.
“Everybody in the world sees that Germany has a reliable and trustworthy government.
“Tonight we will be celebrating and as of tomorrow we will be resuming our work.”
Those negotiations are certain to be tricky after a campaign that exposed sharp divisions over migration and how to deal with the AfD in a country where far-right politics carry a particularly strong stigma due to its nazi past.
That could leave Mr Scholz in a caretaker role for months, delaying urgently needed policies to revive Europe’s largest economy after two consecutive years of contraction and as companies struggle against global rivals.
It would also create a leadership vacuum in the heart of Europe even as it deals with a host of challenges including US President Donald Trump threatening a trade war and attempting to fast-track a ceasefire deal for Ukraine without European involvement.
Germany, which has an export-oriented economy and long relied on the United States for its security, is particularly vulnerable.
Germans are more pessimistic about their living standards now than at any time since the financial crisis in 2008.
Attitudes towards migration have also hardened, a profound shift in ******* public sentiment since its “Refugees Welcome” culture during Europe’s migrant crisis in 2015, that the AfD has both driven and harnessed.
Sunday’s election came after the collapse last November of Mr Scholz’s coalition of his SPD, the Greens and pro-market **** in a row over budget spending.
“Now we have the far-right – the AfD – and the fact they got such a good election result is something we cannot accept and I will never accept,” Mr Scholz said.
“We need to stick to what we have always said, we mustn’t work with the far-right
“I am convinced that our values are important so that our country remains significant.”
Camera IconGermany’s far right Alternative party took second place for the first time in a national election. (EPA PHOTO) Credit: AAP
The election campaign has been dominated by fierce exchanges over the perception that irregular immigration is out of control, fuelled by a series of attacks in which the suspected perpetrators were of migrant origin.
It has also been overshadowed by the unusually forceful show of solidarity by members of the Trump administration – including Vice President JD Vance and tech billionaire Elon Musk – for the anti-migrant AfD, and broadsides against European leaders.
The 12-year old AfD party took second place for the first time in a national election, according to the exit polls.
To be sure, the AfD is unlikely to govern for now as all mainstream parties have ruled out working with it, though some analysts believe its strength could pave the way for an AfD win in 2029.
Support for the AfD, along with a small but significant vote share for the far left and the decline of Germany’s big-tent parties, is increasingly complicating the formation of coalitions and governance.

Why investors should brace for more volatility
Why investors should brace for more volatility
Nvidia’s (NVDA) earnings will be a critical test for the AI trade following the stock’s sluggish start to the year. But even if the chip giant beats Wall Street’s lofty expectations, it doesn’t guarantee the stock will regain its lost momentum.
In fact, the road ahead is likely to be bumpy as concerns surrounding China’s AI startup DeepSeek, slowing growth, and export restrictions remain potential overhangs on the stock. And that’s prompting Wall Street to send a clear message: brace for a wild ride.
“We’re expecting significant volatility … we’ve seen that play out every time,” Raymond James chief market strategist Matt Orton told me.
The options market is predicting a 7% swing in Nvidia shares when the chip giant reports fourth quarter earnings. That’s a more muted reaction compared to recent quarters but it’s still a lot of money — equating to about a $230 billion swing in market value.
And what sets this quarter apart from others is that the volatility might linger for longer, pros warn. BayCrest equity derivatives managing director David Boole told me the stock could stay on a roller coaster for a month after earnings, as some investors have already bought the dip after the DeepSeek driven sell-off, while others who are spooked may not be satisfied with the results.
“We had the dress rehearsal about a month ago,” Boole said. “The sense is what can they say that’s going to really drive Nvidia up another 20% in one day?”
Meanwhile, Nvidia’s once unrelenting momentum has decelerated. Shares are up only 0.9% since the start of the year after dropping 3.9% in the past month. It’s a dramatic slowdown from the company’s massive outperformance in 2024, when shares surged 171% and accounted for more than 22% of the S&P 500’s 2024 gains.
The chips giant is no longer the S&P 500’s top contributor. Meta now leads, accounting for 13% of the benchmark’s year-to-date gains, compared to 5% from Nvidia.
Despite near-term uncertainty, many analysts on Wall Street remain bullish on Nvidia’s long-term future, as noted by Yahoo Finance’s Brian Sozzi. Bank of America’s Vivek Arya warns of headwinds in the current quarter from Blackwell transition, Hopper declines, and China restrictions — only to be followed by strong long-term prospects.
“The stock could be volatile post results, but we expect positive momentum to resume as investors look forward to Nvidia’s leading new product pipeline (GB300, Rubin) and total addressable market expansion into robotics and quantum technologies at upcoming GTC conference (March 17),” Arya wrote in a recent note to clients.
Story Continues
For investors looking for ways to play Nvidia’s results, the print could unlock opportunities elsewhere in the AI trade. Raymond James’ Matt Orton recommends software and cybersecurity stocks, calling them top bets for AI’s “next phase.”
“You want to digest any volatility introduced from Nvidia and see where else you might be able to put your money… as this market remains choppy in the near term,” Orton added.
“We’ve seen a bifurcation between software and everything else with respect to the AI trade following the DeepSeek news. I continue to like the software trade, especially cybersecurity, given the increased number of hacks and continued investment we’re seeing at the corporate level.”
Nvidia is scheduled to report after the market closes on Wednesday, Feb. 26, with revenue expected to rise 73% year over year — a sharp slowdown from its 265% growth a year ago.

Flight from New York to India diverted to Rome after security concern
Flight from New York to India diverted to Rome after security concern
An American Airlines flight en route from New York City to New Delhi, India, was turned around over the Caspian Sea on Sunday and landed in Rome after a security concern, which later proved to be “non-credible,” the airline said.
The Federal Aviation Administration did not elaborate on what was the security issue but said it was reported by the crew aboard American Airlines Flight 292.
A spokesman for the Leonardo da Vinci International (FCO) Airport told CBS News that the 199 passengers and 15 crew members aboard the aircraft were made aware of the problem while it was over the Caspian Sea. They said it landed at FCO airport because it can cope with this type of incident, however, they did not elaborate on the reason for the change in flight plans.
An American Airlines spokesperson told CBS News the flight was diverted due to a security concern, but did not elaborate.
“The flight landed safely at FCO, and law enforcement inspected and cleared the aircraft to re-depart,” the spokesperson said, adding that the issue was determined to be “non-credible.”

The FCO spokesperson said two Italian military fighter jets flanked the plane as it arrived at Rome’s airport.
Fire trucks were visible on the landing strip on one side of the plane after it landed. No injuries were reported. The airport continued to operate normally, the spokesman told the AP.
A spokesperson for American Airlines told CBS News that “safety and security are our top priorities and we apologize to our customers for the inconvenience.”
The flight, which departed from John F. Kennedy International Airport, was heading to Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) in the capital of India. The flight will stay in FCO overnight to allow for required crew rest before continuing to India as soon as possible on Monday.

******* conservatives to win election, far-right AfD in 2nd: exit polls – National
******* opposition leader Friedrich Merz’s conservatives were on course for a lackluster victory in a national election Sunday, while Alternative for Germany nearly doubled its support, the strongest showing for a far-right party since World War II, projections showed.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz conceded defeat for his center-left Social Democrats after what he called “a bitter election result.”
Projections for ARD and ZDF public television showed his party finishing in third place with its worst postwar result in a national parliamentary election.
It wasn’t immediately clear how easy it will be for Merz to put together a coalition government.
The election took place seven months earlier than originally planned after Scholz’s unpopular coalition collapsed in November, three years into a term that was increasingly marred by infighting. There was widespread discontent and not much enthusiasm for any of the candidates.
Story continues below advertisement
The projections, based on exit polls and partial counting, put support for Merz’s Union bloc at just under 29% and Alternative for Germany, or AfD, about 20% — roughly double its result from 2021.
They put support for Scholz’s Social Democrats at just over 16%, far lower than in the last election. The environmentalist Greens, their remaining partners in the outgoing government, were on 12-13%.

Far-right looks for breakthrough as Germans prepare to head to polls
Out of three smaller parties, one — the hard-left Left Party — appeared certain to win seats in parliament with up to 9% of the vote. Two other parties, the pro-business Free Democrats and the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance, hovered around the threshold of the 5% support needed to win seats.
Whether Merz will need one or two partners to form a coalition will depend on how many parties get into parliament.
Story continues below advertisement
“I am aware of the responsibility,” Merz said. “I am also aware of the scale of the task that now lies ahead of us. I approach it with the utmost respect, and I know that it will not be easy.”
“The world out there isn’t waiting for us, and it isn’t waiting for long-drawn-out coalition talks and negotiations,” he told cheering supporters. “We must now become capable of acting quickly again.”
AfD’s candidate for chancellor, Alice Weidel, said that “we have become the second-strongest force.”
She said that her party is “open for coalition negotiations” with Merz’s party, and that “otherwise, no change of policy is possible in Germany.” But Merz has repeatedly and categorically ruled out working with AfD, as have other mainstream parties.
The Social Democrats’ general secretary, Matthias Miersch, suggested that the defeat was no surprise after three years of the unpopular government. “This election wasn’t lost in the last eight weeks,” he said.

More than 59 million people in the nation of 84 million were eligible to elect the 630 members of the lower house of parliament, the Bundestag, who will take their seats under the glass dome of Berlin’s landmark Reichstag building.
Why is support for AfD surging?
AfD first entered Germany’s national parliament eight years ago on the back of discontent with the arrival of large numbers of migrants in the mid-2010s, and curbing migration remains its signature theme.
But the party has proven adept at harnessing discontent with other issues, too: Germany’s move away from fossil fuels, restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic and support for Ukraine after Russia’s full-scale invasion nearly three years ago.
The party was founded in 2013 and initially focused on opposition to bailouts for struggling countries in the eurozone debt crisis — measures that then-Chancellor Angela Merkel described as “without alternative.”

Over the years, AfD became more radical and repeatedly changed leaders. It was Merkel’s decision in 2015 to allow in large numbers of migrants that supercharged it as a political force. In the 2017 national election, it won 12.6% of the vote, to take seats in the ******* parliament for the first time.
After returning to parliament in 2021 with reduced support of 10.3%, AfD picked up strength as Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s center-left government bickered through a series of crises and finally collapsed.
Germany saw a wave of protests a year ago triggered by a report that right-wing extremists met to discuss the deportation of millions of immigrants, including some with ******* citizenship, and that AfD members were present.

But that didn’t do long-term poll damage to AfD. It finished second in the European Parliament election in June, and in September, the best-known figure on its hardest-right wing, Björn Höcke, secured the first far-right win in a state election in post-World War II Germany.

AfD went into Sunday’s election with renewed confidence and radical language, and polls put it in second place with about 20% support. Weidel, its first candidate for chancellor, has embraced the politically loaded term “remigration” as the party calls for large-scale deportations of people with no legal entitlement to be in Germany.

AfD calls for the immediate lifting of sanctions against Russia and opposes weapons deliveries to Ukraine. It wants Germany to reintroduce a national currency and for the European Union to become a ******* “association of European nations,” though it isn’t explicitly advocating leaving the 27-nation bloc.
Germany’s domestic intelligence agency has the party under observation for suspected right-wing extremism. The AfD’s branches in three eastern states are designated “proven right-wing extremist” groups. AfD strongly objects to those assessments and rejects any association with the Nazi past. Höcke has appealed two convictions for knowingly using a Nazi slogan at a political event.

AfD has support across Germany and is represented in all but two of the 16 state legislatures, but the party is strongest in the formerly ********** and less prosperous east.
It has a unique ability to seize on issues “that other parties don’t handle with this clarity, with this intensity, with this radicalism and this emotionality,” said Wolfgang Schroeder, a political science professor at the Berlin Social Science Center. “And on top of that, it’s an internet party and from the beginning used the emotionalizing power of the internet for its own communication — much better than all other ******* parties together.”
That has helped it to perform strongly among young voters in recent regional elections. The party portrays itself as an anti-establishment force at a time of low trust in politicians.

Schroeder described it as “something like an aircraft carrier for resentment and anger.”

AfD’s rise has coincided with that of far-right parties in many other European countries, including Austria’s Freedom Party and the National Rally in France, with which it has plenty of common ground. Orbán this month described Weidel as “ the future of Germany.”
However, it isn’t part of those parties’ Patriots for Europe group in the European Parliament after some tensions before last year’s EU election. AfD was thrown out of one of the group’s predecessors after its leading candidate at the time, Maximilian Krah, said that not all Nazi SS men “were necessarily criminals.”
Musk, a tech billionaire and close ally of U.S. President Donald Trump, has declared that “only the AfD can save Germany.” He held a live chat on X with Weidel and appeared live by video link at an AfD campaign rally.

At that rally, Weidel vowed to “make Germany great again” in an echo of Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan.
Nine days before the election, Vance met with Weidel after a speech to the Munich Security Conference in which he lectured European leaders about democracy and free speech and declared that “there’s no room for firewalls.” Mainstream ******* parties’ refusal to work with AfD is often referred to as the “firewall.”

‘We never expected it would happen overnight’
‘We never expected it would happen overnight’
Do you know where your electricity comes from? And, no, “the outlet” doesn’t count. Do you know the source of the electricity powering your home? If not, here’s some good news: Increasingly, the electricity that courses through the U.S. energy grid is generated by renewable sources.
According to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the U.S. Energy Information Administration, more than 30% of the nation’s utility-scale electricity generation capacity comes from renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, biomass, geothermal, and hydropower. In other words, if all power plants in the country operated at full power capacity, 30% of the energy sources would be a blend of those renewables. That number is expected to climb to 37% by 2037, which shows how quickly renewables are proving to be viable in the marketplace.
2024 saw a big jump in renewable energy capacity.
According to Electrek, through October of last year, solar represented 79% of all newly installed energy capacity. In October 2024 alone, solar was 92% of all newly built capacity. That month also marked more than a year — 14 months in a row — in which solar had been the single biggest part of all new capacity generation in the U.S.
What’s more, utility-scale capacity measurements don’t account for small-scale solar, including the panels that might be on your roof. Electrek said that if that gets factored in, within three years, renewable energy sources would represent 40% of the nation’s energy capacity, dropping natural gas to just 37%.
This likely means big savings for customers because renewables such as solar and wind are far cheaper than fossil fuels, according to a study published in the journal Joule.

Of course, it also means a massive potential reduction in carbon emissions as renewables begin clawing away even more market share from fossil fuels.
We’re already seeing that. In 2024, renewables provided 24% of all electricity generation through the month of October.
“We never expected it would happen overnight,” said one commenter on the Electrek story about the potential for renewable energy to surpass fossil fuels.
“This is great news and to be applauded,” wrote another.
