Who’s the man behind the raised eyebrow and ‘make them pay’ promise? Who’s the man behind the raised eyebrow and ‘make them pay’ promise? When Lisa Alleman’s husband Ronald was killed in 2008 by a semi that jackknifed on ****** ice, she was in shock and didn’t know what to do. Her father called attorney Tim Misny, who had represented another family member in a personal-injury case. “It’ll be okay,” Misny told Alleman, who was barely able to speak. “We’ll handle it.” Misny helped Alleman through the early days after the ******, then spent several years negotiating a settlement with the semi driver’s company that included both a payout and a change in procedure aimed at preventing future accidents. He also helped Alleman with simple tasks, like learning how to start a lawnmower. What’s Misnyland like?: We got a tour of Tim Misny’s 80-acre estate. Here’s what we saw When Alleman asked Misny to be the godfather of Gray, her then 2-year-old child, he agreed. Last spring, he attended Gray’s graduation at Lakewood High School. “I just can’t say enough good things about him,” Alleman said. “I feel like Ronald’s looking down on us and kind of had a hand in the whole thing. It’s a blessing.” Tim Misny with Gray Alleman, his godchild, in April 2010 at Misnyland, Misny’s estate. Gray was then 2. Tim Misny with Gray Alleman, his 17-year-old godchild, at Gray’s Lakewood High School graduation last spring. Misny, who got teary when talking about Gray’s graduation during a recent interview, points to Alleman’s case as the heart of what he does. He said he “makes them pay” — the trademarked phrase that’s featured on his billboards and TV ads — but also tries to force improvements to prevent repeats of the accidents that devastate his clients. “I change the way people do business,” he said during a recent interview in the hunting lodge on his 80-acre estate in Waite Hill that’s known as Misnyland. Misny, who will turn 70 in April, has been an attorney for 43 years. He’s become famous in Northeast Ohio and across the state for his billboards and TV spots that feature his bald head, raised eyebrow and pointed finger, along with variations of his “make them pay” promise. A mockumentary of his life is in the works and is expected to come out next year. A photo illustration of attorney Tim Misny’s billboard images done by a Beacon Journal photographer. The Beacon Journal talked to Misny about his life, his rise from humble beginnings to fame, and his future plans. He admits to not having a successor in mind yet, though he is at least pleased that one of his three kids can copy his signature eyebrow lift. Misny works his way through high school, college and law school Misny grew up in a one-bedroom bungalow in Euclid. Tim Misny at St. Joseph’s High School (when he had hair). To pay for his tuition to St. Joseph’s High School, he worked at a golf course, where he made 50 cents an hour cleaning locker rooms and bathrooms. If he worked all day on a Saturday, he’d take home $5. “At that moment, I realized that if I truly work hard, I can have anything I want,” Misny said. Misny, who had been the editor of his high school paper, worked as a full-time reporter for Sun Newspapers while he pursued his undergraduate degree at John Carroll University. He filled in for other journalists, writing about everything from politics to obituaries. He was told he could no longer write obituaries, though, after he – facing a deadline – wrote a fake one. Misny said being a reporter taught him how to tell a story succinctly, which was useful with his legal career and in marketing. Misny worked at the Euclid Prosecutor’s Office while attending law school at Cleveland State University and after he passed the bar in 1981. He tried and won 100 trials, though he said he picked cases that he thought he had a good chance of winning. Misny said Prosecutor David Lombardo taught him valuable lessons, including not to lie. Lombardo told him that a lie is like a drop of ****** ink in a clear jug of water. In 10 minutes, it will be gray. “I live by that creed,” Misny said. “I’m not smart enough to lie.” Misny worked for the Cleveland Patrolman’s Association for about four years and represented many officers involved in accidents. This helped propel him into focusing on personal-injury cases, though the seed for this had been planted years before. Veronica Vulich, Misny’s maternal grandmother, took him to Tower City when he was 8. She told him about how Joseph Vulich, his grandfather, was an immigrant bricklayer and worked on this downtown Cleveland building. He died when faulty scaffolding collapsed. Veronica’s only compensation was her husband’s final paycheck. Misny asked his grandmother if people lived at Tower City. “Lawyers have offices,” she told him. “One day, you too will have an office. People will need you.” Misny starts small and builds up to big Misny started his practice with a small office in Euclid and a secretary. “I did everything,” he recalled. “I watered the plant. I went to the bank.” He lived in a one-room apartment, where he had no lamp and opened the fridge for light. When he could afford it, he went to Sedlak Interiors and bought a floor lamp. “Someday, I’ll have a nice place to put it in,” thought Misny, who now has this lamp in the hunting lodge of his estate. Tim Misny looks at the lamp he purchased early in his career that he keeps in the hunting lodge of his 80-acre estate. He said he gets sentimental whenever he sees the lamp. Misny started advertising on television in the 1990s, when he still had some hair. He said he writes and directs his own commercials and tries to make each a “mini movie.” He’s done 67 commercials that are rotated among the television markets. Misny did end up getting an office in Tower City and was able to share this with his grandmother, who was then in her 90s. He still has an office in Cleveland, though no longer at Tower City, and in 19 other Ohio cities, including Akron, Canton, Columbus and Youngstown. He said the offices are mainly to help steer clients his way when looking online for an attorney. He mainly meets with them at the hospital or their homes. Misny, who calls himself “a marketer with a law degree,” said the idea for advertising on billboards came when he was driving with his family and saw a blank billboard. He called the company and made them a deal – he would rent their blank billboards at a discounted rate. Misny started with 12 billboards, with one near Cleveland Hopkins International Airport netting him a call for a good case. He boosted this to 24, then 50, then 75. He now has 299 billboards across northern Ohio. The billboards mainly have variations of his slogan, “I’ll make them pay,” and target people who have been hurt in car crashes, workplace accidents or surgical mishaps. Misny says he takes ‘prime-cut’ cases Misny said his office gets about 12,000 inquiries a week. He said he and his staff whittle this down to 100 “prime-cut” cases that they take a week. Attorney Tim Misny talks to the Beacon Journal about his life and famous persona during a recent interview in the hunting lodge of his estate. “We only take cases in which we can prove clear liability and real damages,” Misny said. Misny has about 20 people working for him, but he is the only attorney. He said his staff helps with marketing and case acquisition, management and resolution. He said he partners with six lawyers who have areas of expertise, such as pediatric malpractice. Misny gives his clients his cellphone number and tells them they can call him anytime. “Communication is absolutely critical,” he said, noting that this is normally the No. 1 complaint people have about their attorney. Most of Misny’s cases settle before going to trial, though many end up in mediation. His website includes a list of big settlements, including $50 million in a class-action lawsuit and $7.5 million in a medical negligence suit. Misny has a class action suit that he’s expecting to go to trial this summer in Lake County Common Pleas Court. He represents hundreds of residents who live near the Kirtland Country Club, which has skeet shooting on the weekends. His clients include a family with a 12-year-old autistic boy who is sensitive to loud noises and a Vietnam War veteran who has flashbacks when he hears shooting. Misny said the country club has so far been unwilling to reach an agreement, and he thinks the first of several trials will start in June. “I look forward to it,” he said. “I love being in front of a jury.” Mark Petzing, the general manager of the country club, did not respond to requests for comment. More: 5 questions with attorney Tim Misny, who promises to ‘make them pay’ Misny forms lasting bonds with some clients Anthony Iosue hired Misny as his attorney in 2015 after a woman who was texting and driving slammed into the back of his car at a red light while going 45 mph. “Who else do you go to but the guy who will ‘make them pay?’” asked Iosue, 64, who lived in Cleveland but now resides in Florida. After the ******, Iosue had back surgery to repair damage to two of his vertebrae. He said Misny gave him his cellphone number and answered his calls right away. Misny negotiated a settlement in the case in about a year and a half. Iosue said he was satisfied with the six-figure deal. Iosue reached out to Misny a few years later when he reinjured his back at work when a chair broke. This time, Misny referred him to another attorney who specializes in worker’s compensation cases. Iosue said he has kept in touch with Misny, including getting birthday and Christmas cards from him. He has suggested that others injured in accidents hire Misny. “If anybody calls me and they need help, I send them to Tim Misny,” he said. “He will ‘make them pay’ and he’ll do it in a kind way. He’ll represent you because he represents the truth.” Alleman, who lost her husband in the ****** with a semi, said Misny also gave her his cellphone number and answered her calls. She said he was patient when she had questions. Alleman said Misny negotiated a settlement, though it took several years. She said the agreement didn’t just involve money. “Making them pay does not exclusively pertain to monetary references – there are also changes in the way things are done, which is what I appreciate most,” she said. Alleman said Misny has been a great godfather to Gray, including being there for birthdays, holidays, shopping trips and phone calls. She said they have lots of “Misny merch,” which he sells online for charity. Gray said having Misny at their graduation was the highlight of the event, especially introducing him to everyone. “He’s an all-around great guy,” Gray said. “He’s really cool. He’s very accepting of everyone.” Misny – and his image – are in high demand Misny regularly gets interesting requests from people wanting to use his image or have him take part in an event. Jarod Gordan, a Cleveland State engineering student, emailed Misny last September to ask if he would allow their astronautics team to use his image on the front of their robot in a NASA Lunabotics Competition. Misny agreed to his image being used and offered to provide $500 for the team’s travel expenses when they compete in May. Gordan said he was “extremely” surprised and pleased that Misny agreed to the request. He hopes this fun twist will bring them luck. Misny recently agreed to help the Cleveland Institute of Music with an April Fool’s Day spoof. He also signed on to be a guest model at the next Fashion Week in Cleveland. “I’m working on my catwalk in which I raise an eyebrow — and point,’’ he said. Misny reached 50,000 followers in late January on Facebook, where he regularly posts videos and photos and has features like “Tell Me Something Good Tuesday” and another in which his 15-year-old son Max teaches him phrases popular with youth. He also has a presence on Instagram, TikTok and Reddit. Misny, though, isn’t well known outside of Northeast Ohio, which can be perplexing to visitors. A Reddit poster in December said he saw a “guy in a gold suit wishing me a ‘Safe 2025’ and, everywhere I went, I kept seeing him. None of the billboards even say who he is.” Another Reddit poster explained, “Tim Misny is a lawyer who turned himself into a local meme. His billboards evolved from ‘Tim Misny makes them pay’ to ‘You know what he does’ and now just often feature his eyebrows or bald head or him in silly costumes. We love the confusion he causes visitors.” Misny’s future plans include mockumentary and music festival Misny is the subject of a mockumentary about his life by BrainDagger Films, which has made 13 independent films. Moe Taylor, the director, said he emailed Misny and said, “I want to do a mockumentary kind of ‘Spinal Tap’ film.” “Heck, yeah,” Misny responded. “Let’s do it!” The next day, Taylor had dinner with Misny at his home and they shot a promo for the film. Taylor said they now have a “bro-******.” Attorney Tim Misny has posters for the still-in-progress mockumentary of his life in the hunting lodge of his estate. The posters feature the pose that made him famous. Taylor, 46, put out a call for originally composed songs about Misny, and more than 400 were submitted. He said not everyone understood the rules, though, with some providing songs that had nothing to do with Misny. He said the best songs are on Misny’s Instagram page. Taylor said a scene for the film will be shot during a free concert on March 29 at 5 O’Clock Lounge in Lakewood. The movie is expected to be finished by next summer, when it will be shown in Cleveland-area theaters and then be put into the international film festival circuit. Misny said he agreed to do the movie because “I want to spread my philosophy.” Though the movie with be fun, he said it will touch on more serious issues, like the importance of honesty and hard work. Misny regularly speaks at universities, including past talks at Kent State University. He will speak at the University of Akron in April. Misny said there will be a “Make Them Pay” music festival in July at nine venues in Cleveland. The festival will benefit the City Mission, a Cleveland homeless shelter where Misny also donates the proceeds from his merchandise store, misnymerch.com. Though Misny will turn 70 on April 22, he doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. He also doesn’t have a successor in mind. He did say, though, that his daughter Ruby is the only of his kids who can do an eyebrow lift and has taken an interest in his work. “I want to raise my kids to be good kids,” he said. “If there happens to be a law degree …” Misny, though, said he can imagine himself continuing to work on his death bed. A nurse might come in and say she was rear-ended on her way to work, and he will tell her, “Grab my card and call my office.” “I’m going to be hustling to the very end,” Misny predicted. State to kill thousands of cats in bid to protect native species State to kill thousands of cats in bid to protect native species Thousands of cats will be killed as part of a new culling program which aims to protect some of Australia’s most vulnerable species. The program aims to reduce the growing population of feral cats across 180,000 hectares of south-west Queensland. “This project is a chance to turn the tide,” Desert Channels Queensland CEO Leanne Kohler said. Funding of $498,973 was poured into the project as part of the government’s Saving Native Species Program. The Channel Country Threatened Species Partnership (CCTSP) will unite 12 groups “in a shared mission to safeguard the environment and biodiversity of our remarkably beautiful Channel Country”, Ms Kohler said. Included in this partnership are traditional custodians, pastoral companies, conservation groups and the Queensland Government. Together they will work to conserve iconic threatened species, including endangered and critically endangered fauna such as the greater bilby, the night parrot, the plains-wanderer and the kowari. Camera IconMore than 200 species are threatened by feral cats, including the endangered greater bilby. NCA NewsWire / James Gourley Credit: News Corp Australia There are more than 200 native species which come under ongoing threat from feral cats, which are one of Australia’s most devastating predators. “Feral cats are relentless hunters that don’t recognise property boundaries,” the state’s Deputy Director-General of the Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation Ben Klaassen. “Innovative collaborative partnerships increase our chances of successfully managing such a damaging pest species and improving recovery outcomes for threatened species,” Mr Klaassen said. The control efforts include humane ground shootings, trapping and the use of thermal imaging scopes to locate and cull cats across eight sites in the Channel Country area. Despite being labelled as humane culling remains a highly controversial practice and there have been calls for non-lethal alternatives to be implemented. The *********** Wildlife Society has been approached for comment on the matter. It is hoped that the program will successfully protect native wildlife and restore balance to *********** ecosystems. Fisherman horrified after catching baffling ‘alien’ animal from the ocean depths Fisherman horrified after catching baffling ‘alien’ animal from the ocean depths The sea is dark and full of terrors. There may or may not be water on Mars, but there are apparently Martians in the water. A fisherman is making waves after sharing footage of a bizarre, mystery sea creature that viewers have compared to an “alien.” The clip was uploaded by Roman Fedortsov, a Russian trawlerman who photographs the sea monsters he’s accidentally snagged while trolling in the deep, Jam Press reported. His bizarre bycatch, which the angler regularly posts for his 600,000 Instagram followers, has included a toothsome wolffish, a critter with a Kardashian-evoking pout, and other animals whose existence suggests that our oceans might be as mysterious as deep space. Viewers compared it to various cranially endowed characters from popular media, including Megamind, the aliens from “Mars Attacks” and brainiac baddie Krang from the “Ninja Turtles” series. Jam Press/@rfedortsov_official_account The creature is one of many deep sea monsters Roman Fedortsov has accidentally snagged while on the job. Jam Press/@rfedortsov_official_account His latest monster clip included footage of a gray, bulbous-looking animal sitting on the railing of his ship. Fedortsov identified the blob as a smooth lumpsucker, a species of marine ray-finned fish that grows to over a foot long and resides in the depths. Fisherman Fedortsov frequently photographs the sea monsters he’s accidentally snagged while trolling in the deep. Jam Press/@rfedortsov_official_account Anyone order a cheeseburger? It’s another frightening Fedortsov find. Jam Press/@rfedortsov_official_account The Lovecraftian critter caused quite a stir among Instagram users, who claimed it was evidence of extra-terrestrial existence. “That is 100% an alien,” declared one viewer, while another wrote, “That’s the **** of aliens living underwater.” “Kill it and burn it and don’t ever catch one of those again!” advised a third. “Fished in Chernobyl?” quipped one wit, while another wrote, “Alien or predator?” Others compared the fish to various cranially endowed characters from popular media, including Megamind, the aliens from “Mars Attacks” and brainiac baddie Krang from the “Ninja Turtles” series. However, the fish’s bloated body was likely not caused by a preternaturally large cerebellum, but rather rapid pressurization changes during its journey to the surface. This isn’t the first deep-sea denizen to make a splash of late. Earlier this month, Gen Z TikTok users were moved to tears over the saga of a small anglerfish that perished shortly after swimming to the surface. The Witcher 4’s Trailer Highlights an Essential Difference Between the Series’ Two Protagonists The Witcher 4’s Trailer Highlights an Essential Difference Between the Series’ Two Protagonists CD Projekt Red’s reveal trailer for The Witcher 4 shows us what we can expect from the studio’s highly anticipated entry to the franchise. But it also does more than set the stage for the game’s dark fantasy world, it highlights a fundamental difference between Geralt and Ciri. They have completely different backgrounds. | Image Credit: CD Projekt Red We are introduced to Mioni, a girl whose fate is sealed by tradition, and her story parallels that of Ciri herself. The trailer compares these two characters and it’s clear from the start that Ciri’s journey will have difficult choices, personal stakes, and her fight against the expectations placed upon her. The Witcher 4 is going to show us the difference between Ciri and Geralt Ciri’s journey has been very unique. Image Credit: CD Projekt Red In the reveal trailer, we see the village of Stromford and we find out that it has a grim tradition. The village sacrifices young girls to a monster called the Bauk to prevent its wrath. In the trailer, we see a young girl named Mioni who has been chosen as the next sacrifice and has accepted her upcoming fate and expectations. What the trailer shows us on a deeper level is that Mioni is similar to Ciri in many ways. Unlike Mioni, who has resigned herself to this fate, Ciri has always been a fighter. Narrative director Philipp Weber explains this connection between the two in the recent Behind The Scenes video for the reveal trailer. We were thinking in this story that Mioni and Ciri are, a little bit, mirrors of each other. The traditions of Stromford mean that Mioni has to be sacrificed. That’s her destiny, and she’s accepted that destiny. Ciri is known as someone who does not accept destiny, she fights back at it. And then we hear the monologue that Mioni’s father delivers. He highlights and praises his daughter’s selflessness and duty. According to Weber, this speech was deliberately written in a way that “Geralt could have said this about Ciri as well.” Comment byu/Somethingman_121224 from discussion inthewitcher3 This deliberate choice by the developers reminds us of just how much Ciri has endured. Game director Sebastian Kalemba speaks on this saying, “That makes me emotional because this is also something that she (Ciri) was fighting her entire life.” Geralt often masked his emotions with dry wit and cynicism, but Ciri’s struggles with expectations and duty are far more personal and raw. And it sets her apart as a protagonist. We can expect to make hard and terrible choices again It’s going to be full of tough choices. | Image Credit: CD Projekt Red We can expect The Witcher 4 to explore the emotional burden of expectations placed on Ciri. Our new protagonist has spent her entire life resisting those who sought to control her, and this theme will likely be central to her character arc. Ciri’s journey is very different from Geralt’s more detached, pragmatic approach. And we can expect to see that. Choice has always been a big part of The Witcher games. Some of the choices we made in previous games haunt us to this day. And The Witcher 4 aims to take it even further. Weber says this about what we might have to face. “We’re not going to give you a ****** or white situation. We expect you to consider some situations, make some tough choices.” If you remember, Geralt often approached situations and problems with a level of nonchalance and moral ambiguity. In comparison, Ciri’s decisions are likely to be driven by emotion, making her choices feel even more impactful. In The Witcher 3, Geralt was often an observer, watching the world unfold and deciding how much to intervene. Ciri, on the other hand, is someone who forces change, making her an entirely different kind of protagonist. Ticketek warns concertgoers not to use ticket resellers after customers show up to gigs with fake tickets Ticketek warns concertgoers not to use ticket resellers after customers show up to gigs with fake tickets Concertgoers have been warned fake tickets are being resold through unauthorised reselling websites, seeing fans who spent hundreds denied entry to shows. Ticketek warned its customers a third party website was unofficially selling tickets and asking people for personal information from their Ticketek accounts. Customers were urged to avoid entering any personal details or payment information to the platform, and were told not to purchase tickets from there. “Ticketek has received reports of customers attempting to attend events with counterfeit tickets bought from unauthorised sources,” a spokesman said. “These tickets are often invalid and result in denied entry, causing unnecessary frustration.” Camera IconTicketek has warned consumers fake tickets are being sold to major events through unauthorised reselling websites seeing fans denied entry to shows when they arrive at the venue. Picture NewsWire / Aaron Francis Credit: News Corp Australia A spokesman said Ticketek Marketplace was the only official resale platform for event tickets purchased through Ticketek and that sharing personal information with unauthorised platforms put users at risk of fraud or misuse. Scammers often target major events to request payments or personal information to secure tickets from unsuspecting consumers. Recently, hackers tried their luck using compromised consumer data by obtaining email and password combinations from the dark web to access people’s Ticketek accounts. Billie Ellish fans had tickets stolen from their digital wallets only to find out their tickets had been cancelled when they tried to enter the venue. Brisbane woman Emily Lord shared her ordeal over a series of TikTok videos saying her Ticketek account had been hacked and she had eight tickets stolen and resold on Ticketek Marketplace without her knowledge. Ms Lord said names on the tickets were changed, but she kept receiving emails about the concert because the alleged thief never changed her email address so she never suspected a thing. Ms Lord repurchased the tickets she lost and was refunded by Ticketek for the tickets that were stolen from her. A Ticketek spokesman said Australia was a global hot spot for account phishing and scams across e-commerce businesses. “Ticketek is aware of unauthorised access to some individual accounts via credentials that have been stolen as a result of other third-party data breaches,” a spokesman said. “We would also like to reiterate that Ticketek accounts or individual data has not been compromised. “In the best interest of all our customers, we would like to remind fans to remain vigilant by changing or updating their passwords to safeguard their interests.” The company advised customers to make a police report if they had tickets stolen and the resale of their tickets was fraudulent. “Customers should immediately file a police report and contact Ticketek customer service so we can commence an investigation,” a spokesman said. South Carolina man set to face a firing squad seeks postponement, questioning execution procedures South Carolina man set to face a firing squad seeks postponement, questioning execution procedures COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A South Carolina man who is scheduled to die next week by firing squad is again asking that his execution be postponed and prison officials release more information about the state’s lethal injection drug and procedures. Lawyers for Brad Sigmon said he is being forced to choose a violent death by firing squad because without more information he thinks he could die a tortuous death if he picked lethal injection. Sigmon’s attorney said autopsy results from Marion Bowman’s Jan. 31 execution released earlier this week showed he needed twice the dose of the lethal injection drug typically used in other states and by the federal government, according to court papers filed Wednesday with the state Supreme Court. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. An autopsy for Richard Moore, who was executed on Nov. 1, found the same amount of pentobarbital was used to kill him over two doses given 11 minutes apart, according to his autopsy. South Carolina’s execution law requires officials to keep secret the doses of drugs used, how they are administered, who provides the pentobarbital and the names of members of the execution staff. Because of the secrecy, it’s not known if the new procedures put in place last year require two doses of pentobarbital. South Carolina has said its methods are similar to other states that use one dose of pentobarbital. In Georgia and Tennessee, only one 5 gram dose of the drug is scheduled for the start of the execution. The autopsy findings for Bowman and Moore showed they had 10 grams of the lethal injection drug in their systems. Sigmon, 67, is scheduled to be put to death on March 7. He was convicted in the 2001 baseball bat killings of his ex-girlfriend’s parents at their home in Greenville County. Sigmon was trying to kidnap his ex-girlfriend and confessed that he was likely going to kill her and then himself. He forced her into his car when she arrived at her parents’ home, but she jumped out of it as Sigmon drove and escaped. Sigmon’s lawyers also said they want the state to release more information about the lethal injection drugs including how the drug is stored, its expiration date and details about how officials test it to make sure of its potency and purity. They said Sigmon was forced into choosing a brutal death in what would be the first firing squad execution in the U.S. since 2010 because he feared the state’s lethal injection procedure — if carried out improperly — would leave him to drown from an accumulation of fluid in his lungs. “Mr. Sigmon will be executed in nine days by a method that he chose out of necessity, fear of a torturous death, and without the information needed to assess his alternatives,” Sigmon’s lawyers wrote. Previous arguments that the state didn’t release enough information about the lethal injection drugs have been rejected by the South Carolina Supreme Court after state officials said fluid is often found in the lungs of prisoners killed by lethal injection. The state also cited accounts by witnesses and other evidence that the three inmates executed in the past six months by lethal injection showed no signs of consciousness or breathing after about a minute — even if they weren’t declared dead for over 20 minutes after the execution started. Freddie Owens, the first inmate killed with the new protocols, refused an autopsy for religious reasons. If the execution is carried out as planned, Sigmon is to be strapped to a chair in the death chamber and have a hood placed over his head and a target placed over his heart. Three volunteers, all with live ammunition, would then fire at him through a small opening about 15 feet (4.6 meters) away. State law allows inmates to die by firing squad, lethal injection or the electric chair. Sigmon’s lawyers said he also didn’t choose the chair because he said he didn’t want to be cooked alive. “Brad Sigmon has repeatedly asked for the basic facts needed to determine if South Carolina’s drugs are expired, diluted, or spoiled. He has thus far been denied. He chose the firing squad because he was unwilling to risk the prolonged, torturous death that he fears his friends endured. Mr. Bowman’s autopsy confirms that those fears were justified,” lawyer Gerald “Bo” King wrote in a statement Wednesday. Nvidia’s optimistic forecast fails to convince Wall Street Nvidia’s optimistic forecast fails to convince Wall Street By Arsheeya Bajwa (Reuters) -Wall Street took a dim view of Nvidia’s quarterly forecast on Thursday with investors pushing the stock down more than 8%, piling pressure on the “Magnificent Seven” stocks that have garnered market skepticism in the last three months. The stock closed lower at $120.15, while other members of the group such as Microsoft and Amazon also ended the session weaker, after Nvidia’s earnings failed to inspire the kind of gains that became a hallmark of the AI rally through 2023 and 2024. To be sure, Nvidia’s first-quarter revenue forecast was better than market estimates, with CEO Jensen Huang also noting the company was seeing “amazing” demand for its new Blackwell chips. But growth is slowing. Nvidia’s projected revenue increase of about 65% is far from the triple-digit growth that investors have been accustomed to in the past year, while the company also expects gross margin to dip to 71%, the lowest level in at least a year. Nvidia is viewed as a barometer of the health of AI spending and the two-year ***** propelled its valuation to more than $3 trillion. Investors were hoping its results would restart a rally that has sputtered following the “Magnificent Seven” stocks’ peaks in late 2024. In recent weeks, ******** startup DeepSeek’s low-cost AI model had fanned investor skepticism over the billions of dollars earmarked by Big Tech for AI infrastructure, with many of the stocks still struggling to recoup the losses. Fears of a pullback in spending on Nvidia’s priciest AI chips vaporized more than half a trillion dollars of its stock-market value in a single day last month, a record on Wall Street. And more recently, an analyst report that Microsoft had cut back on data-center leases reignited concerns over tech companies’ spending. Nvidia’s report was eyed as a bellwether for chip spending on generative AI – and while it indicated demand remains strong, it did not quell concerns among investors who were hoping for more. “(The) results and guidance were relatively in line with market expectations − not bullish enough to see another beat and raise,” said HSBC Global Research analyst Frank Lee. Nvidia expects total revenue of $43 billion, plus or minus 2% for the first quarter, compared with analysts’ average estimate of $41.78 billion, according to LSEG. The massive revenue surges and beats that had become synonymous with Nvidia, however, are becoming a thing of the past. The company’s January-quarter revenue of $39.33 billion beat estimates by a margin of 3.4%, compared with a beat of more than 7% in the year-ago *******. Story Continues Nvidia’s Huang on Wednesday said the company had already pulled in around $11 billion in revenue related to its Blackwell processor in the fourth quarter. The world’s second-most valuable company has been the top beneficiary of an AI-driven spending spree over the past two years, with its shares gaining more than 400% in that *******. Of the 63 analysts covering the stock, 33 have a “strong buy” rating, as per LSEG data. The median price target stood at $175, implying that analysts expect a 33% increase from the stock’s Wednesday close. Nvidia shares recently traded at about 29 times their forward earnings, down from more than 80 two years ago, as rising earnings pull down the premium at which the stock trades. Rival Advanced Micro Devices trades at about 22 times its forward earnings. “At around 30x forward earnings the valuation still doesn’t look overcooked,” said Derren Nathan, head of equity research at Hargreaves Lansdown. ‘This innovation offers promising opportunities’ ‘This innovation offers promising opportunities’ Fresh research is showing how a polymer found in woody organic matter can make hydrogen fuel more viable for airplanes. Scientists were able to bind hydrogen to a lignin-based jet fuel, meaning it can be stably transported and used in a liquid state. Hydrogen is challenging as a fuel because it needs to be pressurized and takes up a lot of room with its low energy density. Liquefying it helps on both of those fronts. But liquefying pure hydrogen requires super-cold temperatures, which is a logistical nightmare. “This innovation offers promising opportunities for compatibility with existing infrastructure and economic viability for scalable production,” lead author Bin Yang said, via Tech Xplore. “It could help create a synergistic system that enhances the efficiency, safety, and ecological benefits of both sustainable aviation fuel and hydrogen technologies.” Washington State University, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, the University of New Haven, and Natural Resources Canada contributed to the research. It builds on Yang’s previous work in using agricultural waste to make the lignin-based jet fuel. That jet fuel was already promising thanks to its ability to avoid emitting polluting aromatics when burned. Researchers across the board have been working a long time on making hydrogen fuel viable. While Yang’s research is headed in the right direction, it will take years for these kinds of innovations to find their way into supply chains and infrastructure. Hydrogen is often touted as an eco-friendly option when electric power isn’t practical. The promise of hydrogen fuel depends entirely on how it’s made, however. Typically, hydrogen is pulled from water, but if the energy used to do so comes from a dirty fuel source such as coal or gas, any potential environmental benefits are lost. Luckily, there have been innovations to make hydrogen reliably from sustainable power sources. Watch now: How bad is a gas stove for your home’s indoor air quality? If the engineering hurdles of hydrogen fuel can be overcome, its impact on air travel could be significant. Aviation is responsible for about 4% of the rising global temperature. The more we can clean up the business of flying, the more we can enjoy a green future while still scratching the travel itch. I was one of the first Western tourists to visit North Korea in 5 years. I was surprised we were allowed to see signs of poverty. I was one of the first Western tourists to visit North Korea in 5 years. I was surprised we were allowed to see signs of poverty. Luca Pferdmenges visited North Korea as one of the first Western tourists there in five years. He told *** it was surprising that the tour guides didn’t try to hide the country’s poverty. The influencer has visited almost every country in the world — he has just two more to go. This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Luca Pferdmenges, a 23-year-old ******* travel influencer who was among the first Western tourists to visit North Korea since 2020. The conversation has been edited for length and clarity. I’ve wanted to visit North Korea for a long time. I’m two countries away from my goal of visiting every country in the world, and for me, it’s about giving every place a chance, even if I hate the politics. Going there, there were lots of rules to follow and moments that felt quite staged, but what surprised me most was that they didn’t hide the country’s visible poverty. Entering North Korea There have been a few false starts in the past, but two weeks ago, Koryo Tours set up a WhatsApp group for travelers flexible enough to enter North Korea on short notice. I was in Lisbon when I got the confirmation. I would be among the first foreign tourists allowed back after a five-year hiatus, as long as I could reach Quanhe in China in time. With just two days to plan it, I flew from Lisbon to Dubai, then onto Beijing, and finally to Quanhe. I was nervous about the border crossing from China into North Korea, because you don’t really know what to expect. They can pretty much do whatever they want with you, including going through all the photos on your phone. Some people got their phones checked, but I didn’t. North Korea opened up to Western tourists again in early 2025.Courtesy of Luca Pferdmenges and Luna Salerno When we crossed the border, you could tell that it wasn’t really a routine procedure for them, because the border had been closed for five years. It was all a bit improvised, but it worked out. Once inside North Korea, a few things immediately stood out. There are no advertisements anywhere — not even in the cities. Instead, it’s just propaganda posters, portraits of the leaders, and flags. I was also surprised that COVID-19 is still such a big deal there. About 80% of the people I saw wore masks, and every bag entering the country had to go through a disinfecting machine. ‘It felt an awful lot like a school trip’ Everything on a North Korean tour is very, very organized, with strict rules to follow. Some are obvious — like not speaking badly about the leaders. There are also more persnickety rules that you may not be aware of, like the requirement that whenever you take a photo of any statues of the leaders, everything needs to be completely in the frame — no cropping or zooming in on anything. It felt an awful lot like a school trip. Everyone is on a bus, with assigned seats and the guide never leaves you. Over five days, we did a lot of random things: climbing a mountain, visiting a shopping center, and touring a foreign language school. In the school, the teacher pretty much read a script when we entered the classroom. We also visited the statues of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il. It’s a whole routine: You have to buy plastic flowers to show your respect. The tour included visits to a foreign language school, a shopping center, and statues of North Korean leaders.Courtesy of Luca Pferdmenges and Luna Salerno Seeing the poverty The Rason region is poorer than Pyongyang, the capital, which is still closed to most foreigners, and as we traveled from place to place, we saw the poverty. People in the rural areas were clearly very poor, and we weren’t allowed to photograph them. Many of them were using oxen and carriages. Our guides also very strictly told us not to photograph the farmers’ houses in the countryside because they are very run-down and shabby. Surprisingly, they didn’t close the curtains so we couldn’t see it. The guides also didn’t deny that there is poverty; they just don’t like people taking photos of it and presenting it as the sole truth. That being said, if you have a good job and relative privilege, you can get a phone and access the local internet. They even have an app store where you can download the Korean version of Western games. I was very surprised to learn that there’s a North Korean version of “Clash of Clans.” Luca Pferdmenges traveled to North Korea with Koryo Tours.Courtesy of Luca Pferdmenges and Luna Salerno A visit to a pharmacy The tour itself was surprisingly affordable — about $740 in total, including a night in China and most of the food. North Korea is quite cheap for Westerners, and the hotel was actually really good. On occasion, we had some unexpectedly authentic interactions with the locals, like when we visited a pharmacy. They were largely confused about why we were there; they’d probably never seen a foreigner before. Visiting a pharmacy may not seem like a typical tourist activity, but the country is eager to showcase the parts that function well. People think of China as this really oppressive state where everything is controlled, but, to us, it felt like entering the free world again. We could leave the bus and go wherever we wanted, which really puts things into perspective. Everyone has an opinion about North Korea, and it’s so different from any other place in the world. But I saw a North Korea that wasn’t just ****** and white. I’d definitely go back because it’s one of those places that you leave with more questions than you previously had. I swapped my everyday display to the BenQ GW2486TC Eye-Care Monitor for a month, here’s my verdict I swapped my everyday display to the BenQ GW2486TC Eye-Care Monitor for a month, here’s my verdict Why you can trust TechRadar We spend hours testing every product or service we review, so you can be sure you’re buying the best. Find out more about how we test. BenQ GW2486TC Eye-Care Monitor: Two-minute review The BenQ GW2486TC is a great monitor for those that just need more screen real estate. It helps that there are some included features to make hours of use a bit more palatable, such as the ones focused on minimizing eye strain. After all, not everyone needs an ultra widescreen 8K monitor with HDR and a super fast refresh rate. Most of us just want more space while working. This monitor does that. It also helps that it is very affordable for an external monitor. Sure, this is just a 24-inch model with quite a few limitations, like a 1080p resolution with a somewhat limited color coverage – you shouldn’t be using this for most types of color correction and editing. And there’s no KVM (keyboard, video, mouse) switching on hand, either. But, it’s got great ergonomics to help you get the most comfortable view of your work. So, if you’re okay with those compromises, meaning you’re not also a gamer or creative, and can skip out on the unfortunate lack of cable management, this might be one of the best business monitors for you. BenQ GW2486TC: Price and availability How much does it cost? $189.99 / £149.99 / AU$289.00 When is it available? Available now Where can you get it? Available in the US, *** and Australia The best monitors come in at all sorts of price points, and you usually have to pay a bit more than the BenQ GW2486TC Eye-Care Monitor. The going price of this monitor, $189.99 / £149.99 / AU$289, is about as reasonable as it gets. While you can find some other great deals such as the 27-inch gaming-oriented Arzopa M1RC with its £239 / $269 MRSP out there, they’re few and far between. Of course, the Arzopa does have QHD (2560 x 1440p) resolution and a 180Hz refresh rate. But it’s missing speakers and the eye-care oriented features of the BenQ reviewed here. If you need more features, you’re most likely going to have to spend a bit more. The 4K BenQ PD2705UA has about every feature one could imagine as well as the kind of color coverage and accuracy for editing work, unlike the GW2486TC. You can even split the screen between two different sources as well as use KVM. It’s also more than double the price at $549.99 / £549.99 / AU$739. BenQ GW2486TC: Specs Swipe to scroll horizontally BenQ GW2486TC Eye-Care Monitor Specs Screen size: 23.8 inches Aspect ratio: 16:9 Resolution: 1920 x 1080 Brightness: 250 nits Response time: 5ms gtg (overdrive) Viewing angle: 178° / 178° Contrast ratio: 1300:1 Color support: 99% sRGB Inputs: 1x DP 1.4, 1x HDMI 1.4, 1x USB-C, 2x USB-A downstream Weight: 13.7 lbs (6.2 kg) BenQ GW2486TC: Design Fantastic ergonomics for personalized viewing angles Good port selection including USB-C with power delivery No cable management The BenQ GW2486TC Eye-Care Monitor might be cheap, but it is an attractive looking monitor. In all-white, it’s neither drab or boring. In fact, the worst thing about this 24-inch monitor is probably its display panel, which is a basic IPS 1080p one with a typical 178-degree viewing angle. But when it comes to this monitor’s design, there’s plenty to like, particularly the ergonomics. Thanks to its tall stand, there’s 130mm of height adjustment. Once you have at eye level (or wherever you prefer to have the monitor seated), there’s a 45 degree swivel either left or right, a five degree downward tilt and a 20 degree upward one, not to mention a 90 degree pivot in either direction if you need the display in portrait for some reason (like coding). Image 1 of 4 (Image credit: Future / James Holland) (Image credit: Future / James Holland) (Image credit: Future / James Holland) (Image credit: Future / James Holland) The only real issue I have with the BenQ GW2486TC Eye-Care Monitor’s design is the fact that there’s no real cable management. There is a hole at the top of the stand that, to me at least, looks like it’s to pick up the monitor that could be conceivably used for cable management. However, the ports all face downward so that is fairly inconvenient. As far as ports go, there’s a decent array including one DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 1.4, USB-C with 65W power delivery (enough for an Ultrabook but not a gaming laptop), and two USB-A downstream ports for charging up accessories. However, those USB ports are not for KVM and don’t do any passthrough to the source computer. On the bright side, this monitor can be daisy chained with another for more screen real estate. BenQ GW2486TC: Features OSD Menu is easy to navigate A number of eye-care modes help with long sessions in front of the screen Plenty of additional modes for various work purposes (Image credit: Future / James Holland) The OSD menu is pretty straightforward to use on the BenQ GW2486TC Eye-Care Monitor. Instead of a single joystick for control, there are a number of buttons along the bottom right corner of the monitor. Whenever you press any of the buttons, the OSD menu pops up with an overlay on your screen showing icons for categories. Once you select a category, the OSD opens up deeper menu options while providing icons for what each button does. Overall, it’s very straightforward to navigate, whether you’re changing modes, messing with specific settings like color temperature or adjusting audio settings. Where this monitor shines best is in its various modes, particularly the eye-care oriented ones, meant to minimize eye strain from sitting in front of a screen too long. Not only are there modes that limit the amount of blue light, as well as one to adjust for color weakness, but it has its brightness intelligence gen 2 tech, which automatically adjusts screen brightness according to ambient light for what’s most ideal. And, I found it to work fairly quickly. There are also modes for coding, ePaper, sRGB, and MBook that are helpful to have on hand, even if these aren’t necessarily all that unique. BenQ GW2486TC: Performance Screen is good, but nothing special, except for a faster refresh rate Audio quality is passable Comes with built-in mic with noise cancellation (Image credit: Future / James Holland) When it comes to performance, it’s critical to take the BenQ GW2486TC Eye-Care Monitor for what it is – a budget-oriented office monitor. You’re not getting a wow factor here, nor should you. The IPS panel is a basic 1920 by 1080 resolution with a solid color coverage of 99% sRGB. Its 250 nits is good enough for office use, but can be a bit dark when using it for certain types of media. While I did use this for some gaming and had no issues with it, this is certainly not where it excels, especially with a 1300:1 contrast. It’s fine for that purpose, helped along by a 100Hz refresh rate (despite having a 5ms response time). The audio quality on monitors is usually nothing special. The BenQ GW2486TC is no exception. The two 2-watt drivers offer enough volume for anyone sitting at their desk who doesn’t want to purchase or fiddle with external speakers, though they’re worth it in my humble opinion. There’s not much in terms of low-end from the downward-facing speakers – no surprise there – and, overall, are fairly boxy sounding. The best thing one can say about the audio is that it’s there and it’s not terrible. For an office monitor, that’s generally good enough. It’s worth noting that there’s also a built-in microphone with adjustable noise cancellation for use with zoom calls. Should I buy the BenQ GW2486TC Eye-Care Monitor? Swipe to scroll horizontally BenQ GW2486TC Eye-Care Monitor Scorecard Value While this isn’t the most feature laden office monitor out there, it has just enough to make its low price seem almost too low. 5 / 5 Design The ergonomics are fantastic, but there’s no KVM or cable management. At least, there’s USB-C. 4 / 5 Features The eye-care modes are a very nice feature to have on such an affordable monitor, especially the brightness intelligence one. 4.5 / 5 Performance The screen is fairly basic at 1080p, though it does have a speedy 100Hz refresh rate. The audio quality is just passable. 3.5 / 5 Average Rating While the performance is nothing special, there are some great productivity-oriented aspects that make this a great buy for those on a budget. 4 / 5 Buy it if… Don’t buy it if… Also Consider How I tested the BenQ GW2486TC Eye-Care Monitor I used the BenQ GW2486TC Eye-Care Monitor regularly for a month. I tested it with various games and media, used it for work, and tested out its various eye-care modes. I spent some time listening to the speakers. And played around with the ergonomics. The BenQ GW2486TC Eye-Care Monitor has shown itself to be a capable monitor for productivity, particularly for those on a budget who don’t need things like KVM and don’t care about cable management. I’ve tested a lot of tech gear over the years from laptops to keyboards and speakers, and so have been able to use my expertise towards giving an honest and fair opinion, not to mention a critical eye, to any product I test.
