Elon Musk’s Tesla and SpaceX have benefited from government contracts and regulatory credits. Still, he is charged with slashing government spending and jobs, recusing himself when a conflict of interest is present. A reported $465 million loan from the Energy Department to Tesla—that Musk personally fought for—helped him navigate the company through difficult days.
President Donald Trump entrusted the richest man in the world to cut costs for the federal government after he backed him throughout the election. The online tracker for the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) claims its “total estimated savings are $65 billion, which is a combination of fraud detection/deletion, contract/lease cancellations, contract/lease renegotiations, asset sales, grant cancellations, workforce reductions, programmatic changes, and regulatory savings.”
But DOGE’s Elon Musk runs a business empire of his own—one that reportedly collected $38 billion in government funding through a collection of government contracts, loans, subsidies, and tax credits that go as far back as 20 years, an analysis by the Washington Post revealed.
Almost two-thirds of the $38 billion in funds were promised to his businesses in the past five years, the Washington Post reported. Last year alone, $6.3 billion in federal and local funding was devoted to Musk’s companies—the largest amount committed thus far, the publication said.
Musk is worth $358 billion. He owns and runs several companies such as electric-car maker Tesla; rocket maker SpaceX; social media platform X (which was once Twitter); artificial intelligence company xAI; brain computer interface company Neuralink; and tunneling service the Boring Company. On top of that, he is a special government employee and senior advisor to the president.
Government contracts to Musk’s SpaceX from NASA and the Department of Defense make up most of the funds, while Tesla has collected $11.4 billion in regulatory credits, per the Washington Post. Interestingly enough, DOGE, the non-Cabinet cost-cutting body of Musk’s, has looked to slash staff, budgets, and contracts at each of the seven agencies his companies have contracts with. Still, it is Musk who will decide when there is a conflict of interest and when he should remove himself. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt earlier said the President claimed that “if Elon Musk comes across a conflict of interest with the contracts and the funding that DOGE is overseeing, then Elon will excuse himself from those contracts.”
The total amount of funding for his businesses could be higher, since the outlet only looked at publicly available contracts; defense and intelligence matters were not included. Not to mention, the reporting found other grants and tax credits where the exact amount was omitted. Plus, 52 contracts with seven government agencies from NASA to the Department of Defense are on the hook to potentially pay his companies another $11.8 billion in the next few years, according to the Washington Post.

Contracts from NASA and the Department of Defense helped build SpaceX’s infrastructure, the outlet reported—a NASA spokesperson told the publication that it has invested $15 billion in SpaceX. A $465 million loan from the Energy Department helped Tesla scale to what it is today. “Tesla would not have survived without the loan,” a former Tesla employee familiar with the company’s finances told the Washington Post. “It was a critical loan at a critical time.” Musk was personally involved in securing the loan, two people familiar told the publication; he held daily meetings with Tesla executives to discuss the necessary paperwork and spent hours with a government loan officer. When the loan went through, it was discovered that Tesla was missing a certification to actually qualify, so Musk, around Christmastime, went directly to the corresponding administrator to make it happen.
Tesla and SpaceX did not respond to Fortune’s request for comment.
Principal deputy press secretary Harrison Fields said in an email: “President Trump and his entire administration is committed to executing a head to toe assessment of every contract the American people are funding with their taxpayer dollars. Any contracts connected to Elon Musk’s very successful companies will comply with every government ethics rule as it pertains to potential conflicts of interests. The Trump administration will not play favorites in its mission to cut waste, fraud, and abuse.”

U.S. President Donald Trump signaled the U.K. could broker a “real trade deal” and escape tariffs amid ongoing negotiations sweetened by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Thursday visit to the White House.
When asked during a joint press briefing whether Starmer had convinced Trump to avoid additional levies on Britain, Trump said, “He tried! He was working hard, I’ll tell you that. He earned whatever the hell they pay him over there. But, he tried … I think there is a very good chance that in the case of these two great friendly countries, I think we could end up with a real trade deal that … where the tariffs wouldn’t be necessary. We’ll see.”
The Washington leader stressed that he was “very receptive” to the overtures of Starmer — whom he repeatedly lauded as “very, very special person” and a “very tough” negotiator — and noted that the two countries could arrive at “a deal that could be terrific.”
The warm rapprochement with the U.K. stands in sharp contrast with Trump’s otherwise punitive tariff-led approach to redefining the U.S.’ trade relationships globally since his return to the Oval Office in January. The Washington leader earlier on Thursday revealed plans to impose proposed 25% levies on imports from Mexico and Canada on March 4 after a one-month suspension of the initiative, also announcing that China — assiduously targeted on trade during Trump’s first mandate — will be charged an additional 10% in duties on the same date next week.
Trump advocates tariffs as a means to reshape commercial relations, eliminate trade deficits and promote domestic manufacturing. But analysts warn that the U.S. consumer could end up picking up the tab, by way of higher prices on goods and the potential heating of inflation in the world’s largest economy.
“We’ve been treated very unfairly in trade,” Trump said Thursday, said, noting this applied to “friend and foe” alike.
Amid the increase in tensions, Trump has also threatened tariffs on the U.S.’ longstanding transatlantic partners, leaving the European Union and the U.K. in a diplomatic race to avoid the step. In a Thursday escalation, the U.S. president said the European bloc, whose roots date back to the 1993 enforcement of the Maastricht Treaty, was ” formed in order to ****** the United States … that’s the purpose of it, and they’ve done a good job of it.” The EU denies this claim.
Starmer, whose White House charm offensive included a letter from Britain’s King Charles inviting Trump to an unprecedented second state visit to the U.K., took a conciliatory tone on Thursday, saying the two leaders had “had a really good discussion, a productive discussion, a good discussion” on trade.
“I think you’re trying to find a divide between us that doesn’t exist,” he told reporters, noting that “Our trading relationship is not just strong, it’s fair, balanced and reciprocal.”
U.S. trade with the U.K. has been balanced on average, seesawing between surplus and deficit in recent years and leading British Finance Minister Rachel Reeves to reassure in late January that her country is “not part of the problem” for Washington.

Just over a month into the second term of Donald Trump’s presidency, U.S. foreign policy has been upended, especially in Europe.
The U.S. has aimed tariffs at neighbors, lambasted traditional allies in Europe, and taken a pro-Russian stance toward Ukraine in an about-face from the previous administration.
When asked if the transatlantic alliance between Europe and the U.S. is dead, veteran investor David Roche, strategist at Quantum Strategy, was unequivocal: “Yes … it is over.”
“Basically, the Trump administration is not interested in alliances, just deals,” he said. “Trust has been broken. You can’t have an alliance without trust.”
The question now is: What does that hold for Asia-Pacific, especially U.S. allies in the region?
Adam Garfinkle, former distinguished visiting fellow at Singapore’s S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, wrote in a Feb. 24 commentary that “U.S.-friendly Asian elites should not assume that U.S. assets will flow from being downsized in Europe to them in Asia.”
Asian allies should consider that a diminished U.S. global military footprint might render the logistics of U.S. security pledges in Asia more difficult, more expensive to manage, and less credible, Garfinkle wrote.
The U.S. has security treaties with six countries in Asia-Pacific, and has military bases in the Philippines, South Korea and Japan. Singapore, while not a U.S. treaty ally, has longstanding defense relations with the U.S. military.
They should assume that all U.S. aid and capacity-building programs in their countries will end.

Garfinkle also said that Asian countries hosting U.S. bases may not rise in importance or esteem, rather, they may face demands for greater “offset payments.”
“They should also not assume continuity for regional forums like the Quad and AUKUS. They should assume that all U.S. aid and capacity-building programs in their countries will end — and soon,” Garfinkle said.
The Quad refers to the diplomatic partnership between Australia, India, Japan and the U.S., while AUKUS refers to the trilateral security partnership between Australia, the U.K. and the U.S. These partnerships are not mutual defense treaties like NATO.
Roche said the stance taken by the Trump administration represents a “monumental shift.”
“Whether you are South Korea, Japan, even Singapore, yes, you cannot count on the U.S. to defend you … all those states in Asia, which implicitly or explicitly counted on U.S. protection, cannot count on that protection, and will not count on that protection,” he said.
On Feb. 12, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said at a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group that “stark strategic realities prevent the United States of America from being primarily focused on the security of Europe.”
“The United States faces consequential threats to our homeland. We must — and we are — focusing on security of our own borders,” he added.
Taiwan: the next flashpoint?
One area of interest is the cross-strait relations between Taiwan and China. Since 2016, China has ramped up its rhetoric over the island, conducting multiple military drills and vowing “reunification” with Taiwan.
China has never relinquished its claim over Taiwan — which has been self-governing since the ******** nationalist party, or Kuomintang, fled to the island following its defeat to the Communists in the ******** civil war in 1949. ******** President Xi Jinping regards reunification with the mainland as “a historical inevitability.”
Roche said that the Trump administration’s about-face on Ukraine dramatically increases the risk of ******** military action against Taiwan.
“The ******** must now be convinced that if they blockade, let’s say, energy tankers going to Taiwan, that the U.S. will not go to war for this,” he said.
However, Bernard Loo, coordinator of the strategic studies program at the S. Rajaratnam School for International Studies, said Taiwan will be relying on its so-called “silicon shield” to protect it.
This refers to the idea that Taiwan’s critical position in the chip industry would deter direct military action by China, as Taiwan is home to companies like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company and Foxconn — also known as Hon Hai Precision Industry, Loo said.
He also pointed out that while China may have a stronger military, the Russia-Ukraine war should have taught China that “war is really difficult.” He cites factors like the terrain, difficulty of resupplying forces for amphibious landings, and the unpredictable weather conditions in the Taiwan Strait, including possible typhoons.
“I would think that the last thing that Xi Jinping wants is war in Taiwan, simply because it’s just too iffy,” Loo said.
A new security structure?
In a November 2024 analysis piece for the Asian-Pacific Leadership Network, Frank O’Donnell, a senior research advisor at the network, said, “Trump’s historic focus on the price, but not the value, of U.S. alliances and partnerships will form the lens through which his new administration views the region to an even greater degree than before.”
This viewpoint will trigger confrontations between the U.S. and key Indo-Pacific partners over whether Trump feels they are paying enough “protection money” for U.S. strategic cooperation and military deployments, he wrote.
In his first term, Trump signaled that South Korea should pay more for U.S. military presence there.
“This impulsiveness and unpredictability from Trump may push Indo-Pacific states to begin independently taking the necessary steps to improve their defense and political autonomy from the United States,” O’Donnell wrote.
Roche said something like an “Asian NATO” could materialize, centered around Japan, South Korea and Singapore, as well as Taiwan. Other countries in Asia may also line up behind this entity, he said.
But at the heart of the matter is “the weakening of the credibility of the power of the United States on a global scale.”
“Whether you’re South Africa, Zimbabwe, the Congo with its minerals, or Singapore, the single biggest effect is the monumental devaluation of U.S. credibility as a currency,” Roche said.

Elon Musk’s father, Errol, offered a bleak prediction about his son’s future in politics after reports emerged that he’s rattled White House Cabinet members with his sweeping orders to their employees.
The 79-year-old former South African politician said in an interview with Al Arabiya News’ Global News Today program that his son may have some challenges navigating Washington D.C.
“Elon is not cut out for politics,” Errol Musk said Monday, according to the Independent.
The elder Musk added that “politics is where you have to deal with everyone… if you can’t do that, don’t get into politics.”
His comments come after it was reported that the Department of Government Efficiency head has begun to grate on Cabinet members after he demanded last week that federal government employees report their weekly duties-or potentially face termination.
The directive led to “some annoyance” among top officials and Cabinet secretaries, who “are in charge of their own agencies and need to conduct their own reviews for where cuts may be needed,” a Trump administration official told CNN.
Trump, however, insisted on TruthSocial that “ALL CABINET MEMBERS ARE EXTREMELY HAPPY WITH ELON.”
But Musk’s old man thinks otherwise. Errol suggested that Musk’s future in politics will be a bumpy ride, especially due to the 53-year-old’s inability to speak to the masses. “Elon is used to working with triple A people,” he said. “Only triple A people.”
He doubled down on his disapproval, adding that the billionaire Tesla owner’s distance from the proletariat meant “he would have a long way to go before he could really enter the political realm.”

This isn’t the first time the father-son duo have publicly clashed. While the younger Musk claimed that his father had done “evil things,” his dad bit back and said that Musk wasn’t a good father.
“If Elon hears this, he’s going to shoot me or something,” he added.
The SpaceX CEO—and world’s richest person—has 13 children, including a daughter who “disowned” him for being cruel to her as a child and refusing to accept that she’s transgender. Vivian Jenna Wilson, who’s only 20, said she was “relentlessly harassed” for her femininity and queerness and that her dad was “uncaring and narcissistic.”

Australia’s Minjee Lee has work to do on the weekend after a disappointing second round at the HSBC Women’s World Championship in Singapore, having dropped off the pace into a share of 12th place.
Starting the day two shots from the lead after a first round two-under 70, Lee could manage only a 72 on Friday at the Tanjong course at Sentosa Golf Club.
At two under, she was five shots behind leader A Lim Kim of South Korea, whose rounds of 68 and 69 gave her a one-stroke advantage on New Zealand’s Lydia Ko.
South Korea’s Hyo Joo Kim and England’s Charley Hull shared third at five-under.
Lee had a consistent round but failed to make an impact on the leaderboard, parring 16 holes and cancelling out a birdie four on the eighth with a bogey five on 14.
Compatriot and defending champion Hannah Green improved her position, following Thursday’s 75 with a three-under 69 that put her in a share of 23rd, seven off the lead at even par.
Ko was the headliner of round two, the Olympic gold medallist and LPGA Hall of Famer carding one of the best rounds of the day in her bogey-free 67 featuring five birdies.

The steady Ko hit 11 of 14 fairways and 16 of 17 greens in regulation.
“I don’t think I typically play really well on this golf course and I thought this year would be a good year to kind of turn that around,” Ko said.
“The scores haven’t really been that low these past couple days. I’m just trying to focus on me and hopefully just keep climbing up the leaderboard.”
The Singapore field features nine of the top 10 players in the world ranking — and 13 of the top 15 — minus only top-ranked Nelly Korda and Rose Zhang.

“Most people have no idea that their medication could be making them more sensitive to the sun,” Dr. Emily Alfonsi, medical director of Shade Skin in Australia, told The Post.
“They might notice they’re burning faster or developing unusual rashes, but they don’t immediately connect it to their medication,” Alfonsi added.

Alfonsi said she’s seen patients develop second-degree sunburns with blistering, unexplained rashes or dark patches of skin, even in indirect sunlight.
Photosensitivity is the culprit — it’s an exaggerated reaction to UV light. The body absorbs UV radiation, chemically changing medicine in the skin and potentially leading to rashes, blisters, swelling, peeling, burning, itching or long-lasting hyperpigmentation.
“For people on photosensitizing medications, a few minutes in the sun without protection can have serious consequences,” Alfonsi said.
She sheds light on four types of medications that can cause photosensitivity and shares four tips to protect yourself if you’re on these drugs. While sunscreen is effective, Alfonsi said, “it’s not a free pass to stay in the sun all day.”

Antibiotics
Alfonsi said tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones, used for bacterial infections, can cause severe sunburns even after brief UV exposure.
Doxycycline and minocycline are tetracyclines, while fluoroquinolones include ciprofloxacin (brand name: Cipro) and levofloxacin (Levaquin).
Diuretics
Diuretics — also known as “water pills,” which help the body eliminate excess salt and water — treat high blood pressure and fluid retention.
Studies have suggested a link between diuretics like hydrochlorothiazide and an increased risk of squamous cell carcinoma, the second most common skin ******* in the US.

Immunosuppressants

NSAIDs such as ibuprofen and naproxen (brand name: Aleve) reduce pain, inflammation and fever.

How to protect your skin, especially if you’re on a photosensitizing medication
“Prevention is key,” Alfonsi said. “If you’re taking a medication that increases sun sensitivity, a few extra precautions can significantly reduce your risk of long-term skin damage and skin *******.”
Apply sunscreen that’s SPF 30 or higher every day — even in the winter.
Avoid peak sun hours, often 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Schedule annual dermatologist visits, and monitor your skin for unusual changes.

England international Morgan Knowles will boost the Dolphins’ burgeoning forward stocks when he joins the club in 2026.
The 28-year-old St Helens forward has inked a two-year deal and will link back up with head Dolphins coach Kristian Woolf.
The pair forged a successful liaison when Woolf was coach of St Helens and they won three consecutive Super League titles together.
“Morgan is one of the hardest-working players I have had the privilege to deal with,” Woolf said.
“”He is an international forward with an elite skill level and importantly, he is a winner.
“His four Super League titles and one Challenge Cup victory prove that he knows what it takes to win and is just the kind of player we want here at the Dolphins.”
Knowles, who has played more than 200 games for Saints after debuting in 2015, is understood to have wrestled with his decision
He was born in Barrow-in-Furness in north-east England, and joined the St Helens scholarship program at 14 before progressing through their academy and signing his first professional contract with the club at 15.
Knowles will complete his Super League commitments with St Helens in 2025 in what is a huge year for him after the RFL granted him a testimonial season to recognise his contributions to the league.
He has represented Wales four times and England on eight occasions, most recently in last year’s 2-0 series win over Samoa, where he impressed alongside Dolphins star centre Herbie Farnworth.
Knowles is the fourth signing announcement this week by the Dolphins as Woolf takes charge of his roster.
Utilities Max Plath and Kurt Donoghoe signed extensions, to 2028 and 2027 respectively. Newcastle prop Sebastian Su’a will also join the Dolphins from 2026 on a two-year deal.

Mexico has extradited 29 alleged drug cartel members to the United States – including high-profile gang leaders.
Those extradited include notorious drug lord Rafael Caro Quintero who has been wanted by the US for the ******* of an American agent 40 years ago.
The move – considered to be of the biggest extraditions in Mexico’s history – is seen as a major step in bilateral security relations between the two countries.
It comes after US President Donald Trump threatened earlier this year to impose tariffs on imports from Mexico, accusing it of failing to tackle drug trafficking and mass migration.
“As President Trump has made clear, cartels are terrorist groups, and this Department of Justice is devoted to destroying cartels and transnational gangs,” US Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a statement on Thursday night.
“We will prosecute these criminals to the fullest extent of the law in honour of the brave law enforcement agents who have dedicated their careers – and in some cases, given their lives – to protect innocent people from the scourge of violent cartels,” she added.

Reacting to Caro Quintero’s extradition DEA Acting Administrator Derek Maltz hailed the move as a “victory for the Camarena family”.
He added: “Today sends a message to every cartel leader, every trafficker, every criminal poisoning our communities: You will be held accountable.
“No matter how long it takes, no matter how far you run, justice will find you.”
Quintero is expected to appear in court in New York on Friday.
Other fugitives extradited include the founders of the brutal Zetas Cartel – Miguel Angel Treviño and his brother Omar Treviño.
Known as Z-40 and Z-42 respectively, the two men ran the feared organisation for years before its eventual demise in the mid 2010s.
Miguel Treviño, who was arrested by ******** marines in July 2013, was wanted on both sides of the border for ordering massacres and running drugs on a global scale.
Omar Treviño – who was wanted in the US and Mexico on charges of drug trafficking, kidnap and ******* – was captured by security forces in Monterrey in March 2015.
Their criminal empire spanned a wide range of illicit activities including ********-smuggling, people trafficking, extortion, gun-running and kidnappings.
Police in Webb County, Texas, confirmed the brothers extradition and warned Americans from crossing into Mexico for fear of reprisals.

OpenAI released a research preview of GPT-4.5 artificial intelligence (AI) model on Thursday. The successor to the GPT-4o model arrives with improvements in natural conversations, reasoning, and coding. Calling it “our largest and best model for chat yet,” the AI firm highlighted that the company scaled up both pre-training and post-training with this model. The large language model (LLM) was developed using new techniques such as unsupervised learning alongside traditional supervised fine-tuning (SFT) and reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF).
OpenAI Released GPT-4.5 AI Model
In a blog post, the San Francisco-based AI firm announced the release of GPT-4.5. The model is currently available as a research preview to help OpenAI better understand its strengths and weaknesses. Currently, only ChatGPT Pro subscribers have access to the LLM, however, the company said Plus and Team users will get it by next week. Enterprise and Edu users will likely get it after that.

While GPT-4.5 currently supports search, file and image uploads, and Canvas, it will not support multimodal features such as Voice Mode, real-time video, and screensharing in ChatGPT. For developers, the company is previewing the new AI model in the Chat Completions application programming interface (API), Assistants API, and Batch API on all paid usage tiers.
Interestingly, GPT-4.5 is not a frontier model that surpasses older models in all metrics. The company’s internal benchmark testing shows that the new model is better than the o3-mini in the MMMLU (multilingual), and a couple of coding-related benchmarks. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), “This isn’t a reasoning model and won’t crush benchmarks. it’s a different kind of intelligence.”

What the CEO meant was that the main focus with GPT 4.5 was improving the AI’s conversational capabilities and nuance understanding. The company claimed that the model has “greater understanding of human needs and intent” and it now responds to conversational prompts in a more human-like manner.
Its creative writing has also improved with a broader knowledge base. GPT-4.5 can follow user intent closely and is said to come with greater emotional quotient (EQ) that also enables it to deliver better output in writing, programming, and solving practical problems. It is also claimed to be hallucinating less than previous models.
Additionally, GPT-4.5 also makes improvements in reasoning capabilities. Notably, it is not a reasoning model and does not rely on test time compute, which increases the processing time to improve the accuracy and depth of a response. Instead, OpenAI said the LLM shows enhanced reasoning as a core capability and can offer better responses in real-time.
These capabilities were said to be added by scaling existing techniques and implementing new techniques in both the pre-training and post-training stages. OpenAI used unsupervised learning, which increased its world model accuracy and intuition. Additionally, SFT and RLHF techniques were also scaled with this model.

Chicago will add 50 speed cameras as part of Mayor Brandon Johnson’s plan to balance this year’s budget, increasing the stock of the devices used to ticket drivers by 30% citywide.
The city’s Department of Transportation confirmed this week that it is “actively working” to install the 50 cameras this year but declined to share the locations, saying they have yet to be finalized.
Multiple aldermen told the Tribune CDOT officials called them in the past several days to float addresses in their wards for a new speed camera, all of which were intersections the aldermen said constituents had raised concerns about when it came to speeding and crashes.
The cameras are controversial. While some aldermen say they are a useful traffic enforcement and revenue tool and have long asked for more in their wards, others note historic racial disparities in ticketing, and say the burden the tickets places on working-class drivers makes the cameras a regressive way to raise money.
Johnson’s political calculus is particularly tricky. He counts among his progressive base many Chicagoans who prioritize safety for pedestrians and cyclists. But he has also promised to look for ways to tax wealthier people rather than relying on policies that hit poor people hard.
Currently, 162 speed cameras are located throughout the city, so the additions — which Johnson has said will raise money to pay for a chunk of Chicago police positions he restored in his 2025 budget — will bring the total to 212.
Mayoral ally Ald. William Hall said last year when the mayor first proposed the additional cameras that they could go “in wards where aldermen want them.” But it’s still not clear exactly how city officials will decide where to place the devices, though Johnson would clearly prefer to get buy-in from local council members rather than face blowback.
“New cameras will be installed on a rolling basis throughout the year. CDOT will publicize new locations ahead of the cameras being activated,” CDOT spokesperson Erica Schroeder wrote in a statement. “The final decisions on identifying, selecting and designing automated speed enforcement camera locations are made on a case-by-case basis, taking into account a variety of factors including feasibility, effectiveness and equity.”
Each new camera location will have an initial 30-day grace *******, during which speeding drivers will be let off with a warning notice in the mail. After that, those caught going 6 to 10 mph too fast will get $35 tickets, while $100 tickets will go out to those recorded going 11 mph or more over the limit, as is the standard citywide.
Johnson’s team first floated the new cameras as a means to raise $11 million to pay for Police Department positions related to the federal consent decree in his 2025 budget. His first proposal slashed the 162 roles, eliciting outcry from police reform experts and the Illinois attorney general until he reversed course.
Restoring those vacancies added $11.65 million to the 2025 deficit, so the administration addressed that by saying it will install $2.64 million worth of new speed cameras, which would generate an estimated $11.43 million in new revenue. Another $2.86 million would be gleaned from accounting in the police budget for how those 162 consent decree positions were unlikely to be filled at the start of this year.
The mayor’s budget office did not address questions on whether those figures were still up-to-date.
Johnson isn’t the first mayor to see a financial windfall from ticketing Chicago drivers.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel first turned the speed cameras on in 2013, and they brought in more money than expected. That started a trend of the city repeatedly leaning on the devices as a way to raise funds in recent years, even while Emanuel insisted the program was meant to improve safety near schools and parks, not bolster the bottom line.
Mayor Lori Lightfoot in 2021 lowered the ticket threshold from 10 mph over the limit to 6 mph over, to help close a $1.2 billion budget deficit. Critics of Lightfoot’s change tried in vain to roll it back that year.
The cameras have also been condemned for the fact many are only tenuously connected to the parks or schools near which they are supposed to be protecting pedestrians from speeders.
The city does not own the devices, which utilize a 3D radar to capture video and license plates. The cameras are leased from vendor Verra Mobility, formerly American Traffic Solutions.
Schroeder’s statement said locations for new speed cameras are decided based on a “data-driven process that uses ****** data and stakeholder feedback to identify areas experiencing traffic safety concerns.” Only intersections designated “Safety Zones,” or 660 feet from a park or school, are considered, per state law.

Yes, you read that right. Trump’s new gold card immigration plan will replace the EB-5 visa program, which granted green cards to immigrants who invested at least $1,050,000 in a US business or $800,000 in an “economically distressed” area.

Trump’s gold card immigration plan is not a brand new idea, as over 100 nations have implemented it to pursue economic investment. Even so, in recent years, some countries, like the ***, have stopped their gold card visas after discovering that they reportedly gave “corrupt elites” access to their countries.
The program’s issues have evidently not fazed Trump as he told reporters in a recent press conference: “We’re gonna be selling a gold card. You have a green card; this is a gold card. We’re gonna put a price on that card of about $5 million, and that’s going to give you green card privileges, plus.”
