On the other hand, NetEase’s Marvel Rivals don’t even bat an eye towards counterswapping. Why is counterswapping so prominent in Overwatch 2 but not in Marvel Rivals? Let’s find out. Overwatch 2 wants to eliminate counterswapping Blizzard Entertainment’s Overwatch 2 disappointed a lot of fans when it was first released back in October 2022. The game had promised a lot of new features that Blizzard cancelled or partially implemented in the game. One of the biggest promises that Blizzard didn’t keep was the addition of PvE (Players-Versus-Environment) in the game. However, PvE was later reduced to limited-time story missions that required the players to purchase it to play. Although the perk system was also canceled along with the PvE, Blizzard introduced the feature in the multiplayer section of the game during its new season. The addition of the perk system in the title has changed a lot of tactics that players use to win their games, including counterswapping. Counterswapping refers to a strategy in Overwatch 2 where players change their character mid-game to directly counter the opponent’s character or their team’s entire playstyle. This becomes a massive balancing issue in the game because players can counterswap every time they get eliminated or feel like they don’t have a chance to win, essentially playing an exaggerated version of rock-paper-scissors. In a recent AMA (Ask-me-anything) on Reddit with the game’s Lead Gameplay Designer, Alec Dawson, he revealed that the inclusion of the perk system has reduced counterswapping by about 25%. We did want to add more friction to counterswapping and we’ve seen that drop quite a bit since Season 15’s launch. It’ll be some time before players settle on how much less they want to counterswap but in Ranked Role ****** we’ve seen players swap about 25% less and more so at the highest ranks. For power spikes, the goal of the perk system isn’t to limit power spikes. Although Overwatch is rather keen on counterswapping, Marvel Rivals, its biggest competitor, doesn’t even consider counterswapping as a viable strategy in the game. Counterswapping in Marvel Rivals is not really that beneficial for the most part because of how diverse the characters’ abilities are. While there are contrasting characters in the games, their kit is generally useful rather than made to counter any playstyle or other characters. The company touts that the Mark 1 can generate “intelligent summaries” of what you have just read, and can highlight key themes and quotes, in addition to statistics. Not much is known about the hardware inside, aside from that it features a small screen, and has what appears to be a rotary knob to its right. As showcased in a promotional video, it appears as though you manually take note of the place in your book by using the knob. It’s showcased that you can track your reading pace, the number of successive days that you have read, and track your progress throughout the book, with Fitbit-like activity diaries also included. Mark 1 can also score your “Knowledge” based on what you have read across genres and types of books. The application also features interactive reading games. Mark Engineering’s approach might mirror Humane AI, which attached a $24-per-month subscription to a $699 product. Mark Engineering is pinning its hopes on users interacting with both the Mark 1’s hardware and software experience, which aims to “seamlessly” fit between the pages of whatever you read. Manufactured in the United States and distributed by the U.S. Agency for International Development, it’s a paste made of peanuts, milk, and vitamins that alleviates a form of acute malnutrition known as “severe wasting.” Now the Trump administration has officially terminated a number of current contracts struck by USAID for this lifesaving nutrition, contracts that had called for the paste to be delivered to hundreds of thousands of children, most in Africa, according to the Georgia-based nonprofit set to deliver them, Mana Nutrition. Mark Moore, the CEO of Mana, says ready-to-move boxes of the paste are now piled up in a Georgia warehouse and may never be shipped abroad. “If these contracts are not reinstated, there is no doubt children will die,” Moore told me. This comes mere days after I reported that these shipments had been thrown into doubt because Trump’s mass firings at USAID included employees overseeing the latest round of contracts. The nixed arrangements are just a handful of hundreds canceled amid the Trump administration’s appalling decision this week to terminate 90 percent of USAID’s foreign aid contracts. As the details of these cancellations have started trickling out, one thing is clear. This latest turn has wrecked the narrative that Trump and his MAGA propagandists have tried to spin about these cuts—they’re targeting “wokeness” inside USAID, they’re about “waste and fraud,” they’re designed to achieve “efficiency.” All of it has been unmasked as absolute nonsense. The full extent of the damage from these cuts—originally set in motion by Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency—is not yet known. But Atul Gawande, a surgeon who formerly led USAID’s global health initiatives, has established, via communications with partners that work with USAID, a list of contracts that were terminated. Among them are programs that offer natal care for mothers and children, that provide netting and other equipment to prevent the spread of malaria, that work to thwart the spread of Ebola and bird flu in dozens of countries, and much more. The cancellations will nix programs that helped tens of millions of people, Gawande notes. “This is going to be a massive loss of life overall,” Gawande told me in an interview. “Children are likely already dying, and will clearly be dying in large numbers.” Meanwhile, The New York Times has developed a long list of other terminated contracts, which include programs preventing the spread of polio, treating **** and tuberculosis, ensuring clean drinking water in war-torn regions, and buttressing public health in many other ways. Tens of millions of people benefited; now they will not. The details of the canceled Mana contracts illustrate the point. RUTF, the sweet nutritional peanut paste that Mana manufactures, is safe for ingestion by children who are suffering acute nutritional deprivation or are on the verge of starving to death. It comes in foil packets that don’t need refrigeration, making it easy to distribute in regions suffering extreme deprivation. RUTF is widely hailed as an extraordinary innovation in feeding children facing starvation and death. According to Moore, the cancellation of Mana’s latest contracts will mean that around 300,000 kids, mostly in Africa, don’t get aid packets that Congress intended for them. But we, too, are the losers: This paste is manufactured by American workers, and made of peanuts and dairy grown by American farmers, in a spreading of American bounty and goodwill that has long had bipartisan support. Now it’s piled up in a warehouse in Savannah, unshipped and uneaten. All of this lays waste to the spin that Trumpworld has employed to defend the dismantling of USAID. For instance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has claimed all along that “lifesaving humanitarian assistance” will be spared. By any reasonable standard, many of the contracts that have just been canceled qualify as just that. What’s more, there is no longer any way to pretend any of this is about “efficiency” or “good management.” Aid like this is incredibly cost-effective. Not only does foreign aid constitute a tiny portion of our budget; things like RUTF cost a relative pittance, but they spread a positive image of the U.S. abroad and each treatment can save a child’s life. Then there’s Rubio’s claim earlier this month that foreign aid is merely being reviewed to ensure that only “dumb” aid gets cut. In reality, this “review” process has been appallingly terrible even from a management perspective. Assuming it’s true that the administration does intend to restore some of these contracts—which is difficult to believe—then why did this review process require them to be suspended in the first place? Even if some of these suspensions do turn out to be temporary, they will nonetheless have terrible consequences. Programs like these rely on complex supply chains, involving workers in the U.S. and abroad. They require continued delivery of supplies and sustained administering over time. But many people benefiting from ongoing treatments at this moment have now been “completely abandoned,” Gawande said. “They’re pausing a plane in midflight, and firing the crew, then trying to tell us that it’s not going to be a catastrophe,” Gawande told me. “Terminating the contracts means we’re not investing in a wind-down at all.” The fact that these cuts were handled this way—wantonly and recklessly—tells us everything we need to know about the administration’s true goal: To broadcast a clear message to the world that we are now shrugging off any sense of obligation to the global poor. However you want to describe it, the meeting between US President Donald Trump and President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office last night was a historic catastrophe: Ukraine and its most important ally in a public slanging match. But more important than the insults and shouting was the clash on substance. America’s threat to cut its support for Ukraine if Zelensky doesn’t sign a deal. Trump’s refusal to name Russia as the clear aggressor and Ukraine as the clear victim in the conflict. It was a total contrast to what happened on Thursday when Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer met Trump. “Ecstatic”, “triumph”, “outstanding” were a few of the words used by the PM’s team. They weren’t just delighted with the optics of the two leaders chatting about their families and the royals over winter greens and sea bass – Sir Keir’s team believed they had made genuine progress in talks in the Oval Office about Ukraine. Trump told Sir Keir that the US was working fast on a ceasefire deal, but it wasn’t done and they weren’t rushing to a bad one. And the PM got an assurance the US was looking at how it could guarantee Ukraine’s security if a peace was agreed. A senior government source told me “there are good reasons to be optimistic” about Trump’s true position. But last night’s outbursts give a very different picture, and this morning you’d be hard pushed to find an optimist in Westminster. PA Sir Keir had several difficult topics to discuss with Trump on Thursday, including trade and US security commitments to Ukraine A government minister here said the scenes had been “deeply troubling and sobering”. Sir Keir spoke to both Trump and Zelensky last night, but No 10 is tight-lipped on what was said. Today the Prime Minister will be in “back to back calls” trying to patch things up and this afternoon he is hosting Zelensky, who landed in the *** this morning, in Downing Street, ahead of a summit of European leaders on Sunday. But Trump’s words from last night suggest that both Sir Keir and French President Emmanuel Macron had not succeeded in one of their primary objectives this week: to persuade America that Russia is the aggressor and Ukraine must be protected. So what now? Sir Keir has some difficult questions to ponder. Does he strive to get his new diplomatic friend at the White House back on board? Or is the new reality that the US just can’t be relied on, that the animosity between Trump and Zelensky runs too deep. The irony is that until last night’s drama, conventional wisdom in political and diplomatic circles was that slowly but surely, the direction of travel was towards a deal to end the war. Whatever you think of him, the election of Trump had changed the dynamic and focused minds on bringing an end to the conflict. PA During their opening remarks on Thursday, Sir Keir reached into his jacket pocket and produced an official letter from King Charles III, an invitation for a second state visit No western allies would suggest that Zelensky should just fold after three years of holding off Russia, with all the lives lost and all the suffering of his people. Yet privately, and tiptoeing towards it in public, there was a sense that he was willing to take part in some form of negotiation. His previous stance of not giving an inch had visibly softened in recent months. If the conflict is to end, most diplomats would tell you that has to happen at the negotiating table. For all the hot tempers, Trump had said he could get Russia to talk. To stop the war, Zelensky may have to get back to the table too. In the next crucial 24 hours, Sir Keir will hope to pick up the pieces of last night’s disastrous encounter and push Europe to come up with the strongest expression of support, alongside potential promises of more military backing. He’ll also hope he can reset the tone and calm the atmosphere. The version of Trump administration we saw in the Oval Office last night does not portray a reliable partner. The prime minister is now faced with a decision not just on what to do, but who he can trust. For those watching in Kyiv, the future of their country hung in the balance. “It was an emotional conversation, but I understand our president,” Yulia tells me next to Kyiv’s golden-domed St Sofia’s cathedral. “Maybe it wasn’t diplomatic, but it was sincere. It’s about life, we want to live.” Yulia reflects a political pattern in Ukraine: the more the country is attacked, the more unity there is. Before the full-scale invasion in 2022, President Zelensky’s trust rating was 37%. Afterwards, it rocketed to 90%. Before Donald Trump returned to office at the start of 2025, it was 52%. After he blamed Ukraine for starting the war, it hit 65%. “They [Donald Trump and JD Vance] were so rude,” says 30-year-old Andriy. “They don’t respect the people of Ukraine.” “It looks like Washington supports Russia!” observes Dmytro, 26. You wonder what the last 24 hours has done to President Zelensky’s popularity. “When the situation becomes worse, we have another rallying around the flag,” explains Volodymyr Paniotto, director of the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology which conducted some of the polling. World leaders’ popularity often wanes over time, and Mr Paniotto says President Zelensky has not been immune. His ratings especially took a hit with Ukraine’s failed counteroffensive of 2023, and his sacking a year later of the popular commander in chief of his armed forces, Valeriy Zaluzhnyi. But Donald Trump’s new, transactional, often-hostile approach to Ukraine has forced the country to unite and brace for further uncertainty. Not least with his warming to Russia. ‘We are being punished for being attacked’ The initial reaction was that of shock,” says opposition MP Inna Sovsun. “It was difficult to watch a president who’s been a victim of Russian aggression being attacked by the leader of the free world,” she adds. “It’s painful.” Ukrainian TV channels reported yesterday’s scenes in a more measured way: that a minerals deal between Ukraine and the US was simply not signed. Perhaps, given it didn’t include the American security guarantees that Kyiv and Europe desperately want, it wasn’t as tantalising for Zelensky as had been suggested. “We need to find stronger allies in Europe and Canada, Australia and Japan, who’ve all been supporting us,” argues Sovsun. There are clearly deep feelings of resentment between Washington and Kyiv. However, Sovsun doesn’t think Ukraine should give up on negotiations, but should instead reframe the debate. “It’s important to find the right mediator,” she says. “Someone Trump can recognise, but someone we trust too. Someone like Georgia Meloni of Italy. “Under no circumstances should we agree to calls for the president to resign, and I’m saying that as an opposition MP. That defies the very idea of democracy.” Inna Sovsun Inna Sovsun is an opposition MP but does not want Zelensky to resign President Zelensky hoped his Washington visit would lead to a deeper co-operation with the US which could, in turn, bring a lasting peace. Something Sovsun thinks nobody wants more than Ukrainians. “We are the ones who are suffering, it’s extremely difficult to live under this stress,” she adds. “Just this morning, I read that my friend’s son was killed, his second son in this war.” What the MP and countless Ukrainians don’t want is a rushed settlement. Attempted ceasefires with Russia in 2014 and 2015 only allowed Moscow to prepare for its full scale-invasion years later. “We knew it would be difficult, just not this difficult.” Ivanna Klympush-Tsyntsadze Ivanna Klympush-Tsyntsadze says there is no substitute for US help Ukrainian MP Ivanna Klympush-Tsyntsadze anticipated a second Trump presidency being less sympathetic to her country’s cause, but not to this extent. “This mineral agreement does not oblige America to help us militarily, or to upscale or continue the support it’s currently giving,” she says. While there is still parliamentary unity behind President Zelensky and suspended elections, MPs like Klympush-Tsyntsadze have been calling for more involvement in negotiations. Her European Solidarity Party’s chairman is former President Petro Poroshenko, a fierce rival to Zelensky. He was even recently sanctioned by Ukraine’s leader over what Ukraine’s security service labelled as “threats to national security” and “creating obstacles to economic development”. Mr Poroshenko said it was “politically motivated”. Despite this, the former president said he recognised Zelensky’s legitimacy as leader, to combat both American and Russian claims to the contrary. ‘This is just international noise’ Taras Chmut says the world order is at stake As sirens wail and missiles slam into cities, this is a war still raging, despite all of the talk of ending it. Russia is not backing down on its demands for Ukraine’s political capitulation and the complete control of four regions. “This war is not for some area, town or treeline in the east,” says Taras Chmut, head of the Come Back Alive foundation. After Russia invaded Crimea in 2014, the organisation was set up to crowdsource military equipment for fighting Ukrainian troops. “This is the war that will define the world order for future decades. Whether this world will still exist depends on how this war goes,” he says. As he ruthlessly pursues his “America First” policy, Trump wants Europe to provide security on a continent where he is less willing to do so. But Europe is divided on this, and where there is agreement it is that peace is not possible without the US as a safety net. “Europe and the world once again want to close their eyes and believe in a miracle, but miracles do not happen,” says Mr Chmut. “Countries must accept the reality of the situation and do something about it. Recently a group of bike-riding teens have been attacking motorists in Los Angeles, and the incidents have been caught on video. According to The Times and an LAPD release, on February 22 the punk teens attacked a man in Beverly Hills in broad daylight. “The attack unfolded at the intersection of San Vicente Boulevard and Carrillo Drive in the Carthay neighborhood east of Beverly Hills on Saturday, the Los Angeles Police Department announced in a news release. A fight broke out and the driver, outnumbered by the group, fell to the ground where he was punched and kicked, video of the attack showed. The group eventually rode away south on Carrillo Drive after witnesses approached them to try and stop the fight, according to police.” The man was reportedly treated for his injuries and declined to go to a local hospital. Authorities say the incident happened after an argument erupted between the driver and the teens — apparently, the teens had hit and kicked the driver’s car, so he confronted them. Once he got out of his car he was jumped by the group, and the teens only stopped when someone else intervened, who KTLA describes as an individual who was “ex-military.” This Isn’t The First Time A Cycling Group Has Attacked A Driver The Times says this is at least the third time in recent months that an incident involving a cycling group has happened. In August 2024, a driver and his car were attacked in downtown LA when he tried to pass them in traffic. After getting out of his car to confront them, he said he was surrounded by the teens and ran off. When he came back to check on his car, he said they had “ransacked and vandalized” it, and when he tried to stop them he was jumped. Another incident happened in January in the Mid-Wilshire area of Los Angeles. In a video that was captured on social media, one of the cyclists is recording as a white Mercedes sedan blasts through the group of cyclists, narrowly missing some of them. That instance doesn’t look as if it ended with a confrontation between the cyclists and the driver, at least. These incidents have attracted the attention of local officials. Los Angeles Councilwoman Katy Yaroslavsky represents the district of the most recent attack, and in a statement she said she was “deeply disturbed” by what happened and is asking anyone with any more information about what happened to come forward. “I know that this incident has shaken many in our community, and I want to assure you that we take these concerns very seriously. It’s a work in progress but there are some good signs. “There were parts of today that we liked and parts of today that we clearly didn’t get right which is what practice matches are about.” McQualter said the disparity in the statistics didn’t concern him despite the Kangaroos midfielders racking up a lot of uncontested possessions. “There’s a bit of game style in there. But he wouldn’t put a timeframe on the dual All-***********’s return. “He’s going well, he’s probably just a touch ahead of schedule at this point,” McQualter said. “He’s just started running but he’s still got a big block of work he’s going to have to complete to get himself ready to play.
