Four sentenced over ‘eye-watering’ £200m money laundering plot
West Yorkshire Police
Gregory Frankel (top left), Daniel Rawson (top right), Arjun Babber (bottom left) and Haroon Rashid (bottom right) were all found guilty
Four men have been sentenced for their roles in a £200m money laundering plot described as one of the biggest of its kind in *** legal history.
Gregory Frankel, 47, Daniel Rawson, 47, Haroon Rashid, 54, and Arjun Babber, 32, were convicted over the conspiracy to turn criminal cash into untraceable gold.
Jailing Frankel for 11 years and eight months, Babber for 11 years, Rawson for 10 years and 10 months and Rashid for 10 years, a judge described its scale as “eye-watering”.
Only Rawson was at Leeds Crown Court to hear and begin his sentence, with arrest warrants issued for the three other men, who were believed to have fled the country.
Specialist machines
The court had previously heard that between 2014 and 2016, money was brought from across the *** to Bradford-based jewellers Fowler Oldfield, a business premises in London and a company called Pure Nines Ltd, based in Hatton Garden.
The defendants were accused of hiding the origin of the money by laundering it through a company bank account and using the proceeds to buy gold which was shipped to Dubai.
The court heard Frankel and Rawson were the directors of Fowler Oldfield, which had become a “front of genuine trade” for a money laundering operation by the time police intervened in 2016.
The “dirty money” was delivered by couriers in carrier bags and holdalls full of hundreds of thousands of pounds at a time, the trial heard, even being concealed inside fast food boxes and children’s toys.
The cash was counted on the premises using specialist counting machines before being bundled together for collection.
Socialite James Stunt, former son-in-law of Formula 1 tycoon Bernie Ecclestone, had been accused of allowing his Mayfair office to be used as “a trusted hub for money laundering”, but he denied the offence and was found not guilty by the Leeds Crown Court jury on Tuesday.
‘Dirty cash’
Speaking after the sentencing hearing, Hannah Von Dadelszen, from the Crown Prosecution Service, said: “This case is one of the largest money laundering prosecutions ever brought to the courts in England and Wales.
“These four men were at the heart of the operation to launder and legitimise the dirty cash, bringing it into the banking system and today justice was served against them in these sentences.”
Meanwhile, Assistant Chief Constable Pat Twiggs, of West Yorkshire Police, said: “This was a sophisticated operation designed to launder a substantial amount of money connected to criminal activity.
“At no point during our investigation did anyone come forward to claim any of the money that we seized.”
He added: “This complex and detailed investigation, undertaken by the West Yorkshire Police Economic Crime Unit, has taken over eight years to reach this point.
“I am pleased the diligence and tremendous determination our officers and staff, together with partner agencies, has achieved this result.”

Tesla stock falls almost 50% from record high, a ‘gut check moment’ that has Wall Street bulls doubling down
Tesla stock falls almost 50% from record high, a ‘gut check moment’ that has Wall Street bulls doubling down
Tesla (TSLA) stock fell as much as 4% on Friday, bringing its losses from a record close to nearly 50% as it continues to see its post-election rally fade.
NasdaqGS – Nasdaq Real Time Price • USD
As of 2:05:53 PM EST. Market Open.
This drop in shares of the EV carmaker prompted Wedbush analyst Dan Ives — one of the electric vehicle maker’s biggest bulls on Wall Street — to issue a forceful defense of the stock, doubling down on his bullish views during what he calls a “gut check moment for the Tesla bulls (including ourselves).”
In a note to clients published late Thursday, Ives wrote “the time has come” to defend the stock, with Ives adding Tesla to the firm’s “Best Ideas List” and reiterating his Outperform rating and $550 price target on the name.
Ives’s call came after Tesla stock fell 5.7% Thursday, a move that followed others on the Street saying CEO Elon Musk’s controversial association with the Trump administration was clouding sentiment on the stock.
Tesla stock closed at a record of over $479 on Dec. 17 and hit an intraday high of roughly $488 the following day. Shares were closer to $260 in midday trade on Friday and set to close at their lowest level since Nov. 5.
“There have been a number of times in the Tesla story over the past decade that negative sentiment and Street worries have overshadowed the narrative of this unique disruptive global tech story,” Ives wrote.
“From the white knuckle production moments in 2017/2018 to financing worries to the Musk/Twitter soap opera in 2022 … and now here again Tesla bulls find themselves with their back against the wall facing global negative sentiment around Musk/DOGE and the Trump Administration.
“This is a gut check moment for the Tesla bulls (including ourselves) after this massive sell-off in Tesla shares with fears mounting.”
Ives holds the highest price target for Tesla among the 48 Wall Street analysts tracked by Yahoo Finance. On average, Wall Street analysts have a $346 per share price target on the stock over the next 12 months. Shares closed Thursday’s trading sessions at $263.
Tesla stock in February recorded its biggest decline to date.
Shares have given up nearly all of their gains that followed the election of Donald Trump. Musk became one of Trump’s key surrogates on the campaign trail in the final months of the 2024 election.

In Ives’s view, Musk’s foray into politics puts less than 5% of Tesla’s global sales at risk despite what Ives calls “the global draconian narrative for Musk.”
“Importantly,” Ives added, “we expect Musk will better balance his time between DOGE and Tesla/SpaceX over the course of 2025 and some of these distraction issues will fade. We continue to believe the best thing that ever happened to Musk and Tesla was Trump in the White House as this will create a deregulatory environment with a federal autonomous roadmap central to the Tesla golden strategic vision.”

Ubisoft’s ‘Project U’ Intro Cinematic Leaks Online
Ubisoft’s ‘Project U’ Intro Cinematic Leaks Online
Ubisoft’s ‘Project U’, which was in development at Ubisoft Annecy has had its intro cinematic leaked online.
In November 2024, Insider Gaming exclusively reported that the game was put back into incubation following five years of development.
The footage, which was uploaded to YouTube by known leaker Shaun Weber shows off the games intro cinematic, which sets the tone for the game. You can watch the intro below (expected to soon be DMCA’d)
Project U, which was internally called ‘Pathfinder’ was set to be a new take on PvPvE, officially being announced in September 2022 as a “new kind of session-based cooperative shooter.”
According to sources, the game faced constant pushbacks and delays due to the games replayability, which also saw the games budget explode in size. Five years on, the game still wasn’t up to par, and Ubisoft pulled the plug on the project.
However, instead of cancellation the game entirely, it’s understood that the game went back to an internal incubation team because of Ubisoft’s belief that PvE games could still be successful. The team cited Helldivers 2 as being a particularly successful PvE game that could work well in today’s climate.
As for what Project U will turn into or if it will eventually be cancelled remains to be seen, regardless, it is nice to see (in my opinion at least), a little bit of the project made public.
What do you think of the Project U cinematic? Does it interest you in the game? Let us know in the comments or on the Insider Gaming forum.

Apple delays Siri AI improvements to 2026
Apple delays Siri AI improvements to 2026

When unveiling Apple Intelligence last summer, one of Apple’s flashiest demos showed the Siri voice assistant juggling several apps to help a user plan a lunch after landing from a flight.
Those capabilities won’t be coming anytime soon.
Apple on Friday announced that it is delaying the features that would supercharge Siri with the ability to take action other apps until next year. That feature was expected to be released this spring.
Another Siri improvement that is also being delayed would have allowed it to take advantage of what Apple calls “personal context.” For example, Siri would be able to fill out forms on users’ behalf with their personal information based on their driver’s license numbers taken from a photo.
“We’ve also been working on a more personalized Siri, giving it more awareness of your personal context, as well as the ability to take action for you within and across your apps,” an Apple representative said in a statement. “It’s going to take us longer than we thought to deliver on these features and we anticipate rolling them out in the coming year.”
The delay highlights some of the challenges Apple faces developing a next-generation voice assistant that uses cutting-edge artificial intelligence technology to be more useful and conversational. The pressure has heightened since the arrival of OpenAI’s ChatGPT that launched in late 2022 and ushered in the era of generative AI.
Besides OpenAI, Apple risks falling behind rivals including Amazon, which announced an upgraded Alexa voice assistant last month but hasn’t released it, and Google, which is developing similar capabilities with its Gemini assistant. But all consumer voice assistants have had issues with incorrect answers and task automation.
Many Apple devices have already received some Siri upgrades if they support Apple Intelligence, including more conversational capabilities, a new look that makes the entire phone screen glow and integration with ChatGPT.
Apple Intelligence also includes features that can generate text or images, edit photographs and summarize notifications. Those features are currently available on newer iPhones.
The delay to Siri’s supercharged features aren’t Apple’s first run-in with issues adapting to new-age AI.
Earlier this year, the company disabled Apple Intelligence summaries for news apps like The New York Times and BBC after users discovered that the AI system had twisted headlines to display inaccurate facts.
Apple is also counting on its army of app developers will lay the groundwork for its next-generation Siri assistant by developing chunks of code Apple calls “app intents.” That code is intended to allow the AI-enhanced Siri to use functions within their apps.
While developers can currently build and test app intents, they won’t be able to see how they work in Siri until Apple releases a beta version of the upgraded assistant. Apple typically announces major new software features in June, at its WWDC conference.

Dungeon Crawler Carl Hardcover Editions – Save On The Best-Selling LitRPG
Dungeon Crawler Carl Hardcover Editions – Save On The Best-Selling LitRPG
Dungeon Crawler Carl is one of the most popular series in the LitRPG space, a burgeoning subgenre of fantasy and sci-fi that injects video game tropes like stats, health bars, and inventory screens into prose novels. Written by Matt Dinniman, the series has become a mainstream hit over the past few years; the seventh novel in the series, The Inevitable Ruin, is currently in Amazon’s top 10 most-read books of the week. Fans can soon add eye-catching hardcover editions of three more Dungeon Crawler Carl books to their collection.
While Dinniman continues to self-publish paperback and ebook versions of the series, Penguin Random House imprint Ace began releasing hardcover editions of the Dungeon Crawler Carl series last fall. The first three books are currently available in hardcover format, and the next three are up for preorder at Amazon.
Dungeon Crawler Carl Series
Dungeon Crawler Carl (Hardcover) — $20.30 ($30)
Carl’s Doomsday Scenario (Hardcover) — $26.20 ($30)
The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook (Hardcover)— $22.34 ($30)
The Gate of the Feral Gods (Hardcover) — $25 ($30) | Releases March 11
The Butcher’s Masquerade (Hardcover) — $20.49 ($35) | Releases April 8
The Eye of the Bedlam Bride (Hardcover) — $34 ($39) | Releases May 13
The Inevitable Ruin – Only available in Paperback, Audible, or Kindle ebook for now
Dungeon Crawler Carl hardcover editions
If you’re new to the series: Dungeon Carl Crawler is a quintessential example of the LitRPG genre. When bored aliens transform Earth into a giant video-game style dungeon, Coast Guard veteran Carl becomes a participant in a life-or-death tournament. Carl is accompanied by a cat named Princess Donut. Throughout the series, the duo squares off against a wide array of monsters and solves puzzles. In case the name Princess Donut didn’t give it away, Dungeon Crawler Carl doesn’t take itself too seriously. Despite the high stakes, the series frequently leans into the ridiculousness of the scenario with darkly humorous dialogue and over-the-top violence.
You can start your journey with Carl and Princess Donut by picking up the hardcover edition of Dungeon Crawler Carl (Book 1) for $20.30 (was $30) at Amazon.
The upcoming hardcover editions follow the same release schedule as the first three novels: Ace is publishing one hardcover per month for the next three months. The Gate of the Feral Gods (Book 4) releases March 11 and is available to preorder for $25 (was $30) at Amazon. You can save even more on Book 5, as preorders for The Butcher’s Masquerade are discounted to $20.49 (was $35) ahead of its April 8 release. Book 6, The Eye of the Bedlam Bride, will be published in hardcover on May 13, and preorders are up for grabs for $34 (was $39).
If you’re wondering why the retail prices are higher for later books in the series, it’s likely related to page count. Books 1 and 2 were 464 and 384 pages, respectively, whereas Book 5 is 720 pages and Book 6 is the longest book in the series at 832 pages.
Check out the cover art for all six hardcover editions below. Below the hardcovers, you’ll find details about the latest book in the series and alternative formats, including Kindle ebook and Audible audiobook versions.

The Start of a Tech Revolution or Just the Beginning?
The Start of a Tech Revolution or Just the Beginning?
Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) is tightening its grip on the AI chip market, with its latest mega deal positioning it even further ahead of the competition. OpenAI, Oracle (NYSE:ORCL), and SoftBank (SOBKY) are ramping up their $500 billion Stargate project, with plans to install 64,000 Nvidia GB200 chips by 2026starting with an initial batch of 16,000 set to go live this summer. The first data center in Abilene, Texas, is already in motion, marking just the beginning of what could be one of the largest AI infrastructure investments to date.
The scale of Stargate is staggering. The project is expected to expand to as many as ten sites, further reinforcing Oracle’s role in AI supercomputing and Nvidia’s dominance in the AI semiconductor space. Meanwhile, Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) isn’t sitting stillit’s doubling down on AI infrastructure with Anthropic, deploying thousands of its custom Trainium 2 chips to power next-gen AI models.
For investors, this signals one thing: the AI arms race is heating up, and Nvidia is leading the charge. Demand for high-performance AI chips continues to surge, and with its latest moves, Nvidia is positioning itself as the undisputed king of AI computing. If Stargate is any indication, the next few years could see an unprecedented wave of AI-driven investment, setting the stage for Nvidia’s next big leap.

Overwatch 2 Director’s ‘Captain Obvious’ Response to Marvel Rivals Affecting Season 16
Overwatch 2 Director’s ‘Captain Obvious’ Response to Marvel Rivals Affecting Season 16
Blizzard’s Overwatch 2 stood as the undisputed king of the king in the hero-shooter genre for years. However, everything turned upside down for the game when Marvel Rivals borrowed some of its best ideas and smashed them with the most famous pop-culture icons.

Marvel Rivals has been slowly and steadily eating into Overwatch 2‘s player base. Blizzard is in panic mode and bringing all sorts of updates to its hero-shooter to keep it relevant. Overwatch 2’s director has stated that the game needs to evolve to survive. However, isn’t that quite obvious?
Overwatch 2 is feeling the pressure from its rival

In the last couple of weeks, Blizzard has given us a look at tons of new things coming to its hero-shooter. Many have been calling for these changes for ages now, and it’s great to see that Blizzard has finally woken up, thanks to some stiff competition.
In an interview with GamesRadar, Overwatch 2 game director Aaron Keller opened up about the shooter’s recent updates and how it’s planning to deal with criticism. While chatting, Keller acknowledged that while there’s competition from Marvel Rivals, most of the pressure is internal for the development team.
And I think what’s driving that is, when we look at our game, we feel like it’s either missing something or it hasn’t evolved as much as it should have.
According to Keller, the development team’s current focus is improving the state of Overwatch rather than reacting to what the competition is doing. What’s really driving them is the constant lookout for what’s missing and things that still haven’t evolved in the game.
The game director also agrees that when players put thousands of hours into the game, it can start to feel a bit stale and repetitive. To solve that issue, Blizzard is now looking to push freshness into the title. The developer doesn’t just want to do it for the sake of variety; it wants to increase the overall depth of the hero-shooter.
Top Overwatch 2 developer has abandoned the ship
Will Overwatch 2 survive in the current landscape of the hero-shooter genre? (Image via Microsoft)
While Keller and his team are working hard to improve the current state of Overwatch 2 and fight off its rivals, there are some cracks within Blizzard.
In a brand-new post on LinkedIn, Jared Neuss revealed that he’s leaving Blizzard to join Riot Games and begin working on Valorant as a senior director. He had been at Blizzard since the release of Overwatch 2 as the an executive producer and has previously led games such as Halo 5: Guardians and Destiny 2.
Neuss can be credited for a number of incredible changes and updates in Overwatch 2. He’s the man who pushed for the idea of Legacy Credits and the crucial change to make all new heroes free-to-play alongside many other adjustments.
Unfortunately, he was the same person who revealed that Blizzard would be downgrading its PvE content plans for the game, and this certainly hurt his reputation.
As of now, it’s still unknown who is going to take up Neuss’ position in Overwatch 2. Let’s hope Blizzard can shed some light on this subject in the upcoming weeks.
With that said, do you think Overwatch 2 is bringing the right updates? Let us know in the comments below.

Day centre a refuge for the homeless during the storm
Day centre a refuge for the homeless during the storm

Watch: Inside shelter housing homeless during Cyclone Alfred
Residents across the *********** states of Queensland and New South Wales have been waiting anxiously as Cyclone Alfred crawls towards them, leaving thousands in the dark.
Four million people are in the firing line of the region’s first tropical cyclone in more than half a century, which is expected to make landfall on Saturday. Thousands have been told to evacuate.
Most have taken heed of warnings to stay indoors – taping up their windows and strapping down garden furniture – while shops have lined sandbags in front of their doors.
Alfred’s path has slowed in recent days, with one meteorologist described it as a “walking pace” – which has sparked fears of prolonged rain and flooding.
In southern Brisbane, a popular city in Queensland, some from the homeless community have taken refuge at Emmanuel City Mission, filling the floor on rows of inflatable air mattresses.
The space, usually a day centre for people needing a shower or a hot meal, has become a round-the-clock shelter.
Tim ******* that few facilities are still open for those in need
Operations manager Tim ******* told the BBC that most government-funded charities in the inner city of Brisbane have shut down since Thursday, leaving limited options for those in need.
It may be the first time in a long while that homeless people – who typically live in tents in parks or along riverbanks – have a proper resting space, he said.
“It’s counter intuitive…but this is the best they’ve been looked after. They’ve got somewhere to sleep.
“For a lot of them, this would be the first time in 10 years they’ve had an eight-hour sleep in air conditioning, going to bed on a full belly, waking up, getting a barista coffee and a bacon and egg burger,” he said.
Mr ******* said he hoped the cyclone would highlight the need for better funding for organisations such as his.
“We’d love for when the cyclone passes, that these people don’t become invisible again,” he said.
Lauren Gorman was spending her second night at the centre with her dog Charcoal.
“I live on the streets, we have a housing crisis, and now we have a cyclone. This place has been amazing for finding other people who are doing it rough and getting information,” she told the BBC.
“I’m not scared, but I am worried for others who are still on the streets.”
Federal MP Anika Wells says complacency is the biggest risk
While the authorities have warned for days about the cyclone, some die-hard surfers have instead seized the opportunity to ride the high waves.
Federal MP Anika Wells, whose Lilley electorate is in the north of Brisbane, says complacency is the biggest risk – especially as the arrival of the cyclone kept being pushed back.
“We’re going door to door in some suburbs, where people are being asked to evacuate, but lots of people aren’t going because this is a once-in-50 year event, and it’s hard to take that notice to evacuate seriously, perhaps, when the sun is still shining in your backyard,” Wells told the BBC.
As well as strong winds, Cyclone Alfred is expected to dump as much as 800mm of rain in the coming days. Flash and riverine flooding is the biggest concern in low-lying areas.
Some residents have been told they could be without power for days.
Nearly 1,000 schools have closed, public transport has been suspended and airports are shut. Elective surgeries have also been cancelled.
Flights are not expected to resume until Sunday at the earliest.

Investigation launched after kids are shown skipping rope with python
Authorities in Queensland, Australia, are investigating a possible animal-cruelty case after reviewing footage that showed children skipping rope with a python. The video appears to have been deleted, but images of the disturbing incident are circulating online.
7 News in Australia reports that the footage was captured in Woorabinda and shared earlier this week. The case is under investigation by Queensland’s Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation.
The snake has been identified as a ******-headed python, a non-venomous reptile that grows to about 6 feet.
In the footage, according to reports, the children laughed as they skipped rope with the reptile. It’s not clear if the snake was dead before, or killed during its use as a jumping rope.
Sunshine Coast Snake Catchers, which relocates problem snakes in Australia, shared the accompanying image, stating via Instagram: “The saddest part about this video is that the children were being encouraged by an adult to carry out this behavior. It’s extremely important that parents educate their children on respecting wildlife so incidents like this don’t continue to happen.”
The company added: “We have seen a big increase lately in members of the public catching snakes or hurting/killing snakes like in this video, and it’s sickening to watch.”

It’s Time To Agree The Thing Has an ‘Extremely Useless’ Ability That Doesn’t Do Jack For Bronze Players in Ranked
It’s Time To Agree The Thing Has an ‘Extremely Useless’ Ability That Doesn’t Do Jack For Bronze Players in Ranked
The Thing from Marvel Comics was added to NetEase Games’ Marvel Rivals recently, and he quickly proved himself to be one of the strongest Vanguard heroes in the game. However, to get the most out of this hero, players need to work with their teammates, which can be a tough task in some ranked games.
The Thing was added to Marvel Rivals as a part of the season 1.5 update (Image via NetEase Games)
The Thing’s Embattled Leap ability allows him to apply damage reduction to himself as well as his teammate, which is certainly a useful ability on the battlefield. However, some ranked players, especially the ones in the Bronze league, have complained that this ability is useless because teammates refuse to push in.
Some Marvel Rivals players believe that this one ability of The Thing is useless
The Thing is one of the most popular heroes among the Marvel Rivals community right now, but his Embattled Leap ability is being labeled as useless by ranked players. This ability allows The Thing to take a leap towards any teammate to give himself and the teammate damage reduction, but it is almost impossible to team up with players who push forward at the same time.
So, this ability is rarely used in matches, making it quite useless. It will only work if you have teammates with whom you can coordinate your attacks. The hero is quite strong, but the game is all about teamwork. One shouldn’t expect The Thing to rush in to do everything alone, so the first instinct should be assisting the hero on the battlefield.
It’s not just the teammates, but many The Thing players also don’t understand how to use the hero’s abilities. Once again, instalockers are ruining the game, but NetEase has made it clear that nothing will be done to solve this problem.
Does The Thing need a nerf?
Some players think The Thing needs a nerf (Image via NetEase Games)
Most Marvel Rivals players are satisfied with The Thing’s abilities. However, a small section of players believe that the hero’s Stone Haymaker ability needs a nerf. This ability allows the hero to deliver a devastating punch that inflicts a lot of damage. So, players have suggested that a 2-3 second cool down on this ability would make things much more balanced.
Players face this problem with not only The Thing but also other Vanguards in the game. These heroes are capable of taking a lot of damage to allow other heroes to push, but if the teammates refuse to push, then it becomes quite pointless. Players need to understand the different types of classes in the game and the roles they must play when they are on the battlefield. The game is all about teamwork, so there’s no need to rush in alone to get the most kills.

Security forces accused of executing dozens of Alawites
Security forces accused of executing dozens of Alawites
Syrian security forces are alleged to have executed 52 people belonging to the Alawite ********* in the coastal province of Latakia, according to one war monitoring group.
Footage seen by the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights shows dozens of bodies in civilian clothing piled up in the garden of a house in Latakia.
An interior ministry source told the country’s official news agency Sana said that “individual violations” had occurred on the coast and pledged to put a stop to them.
BBC News has not been able to verify claims that the killings were committed by the forces of Syria’s new rulers.
This followed clashes between government forces and fighters loyal to the deposed President Bashar al-Assad, which left more than 70 dead.
A curfew has been imposed in the cities of Homs, Latakia and Tartous, where the fighting has broken out.
Earlier, BBC Verify confirmed two videos that showed a body being dragged behind a car in Latakia.
The United Nation’s special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, said in a statement he was “deeply concerned” by reports of the clashes and killings.
He called on all parties to “refrain from actions that could further inflame tensions, escalate conflict, exacerbate the suffering of affected communities, destabilize Syria, and jeopardize a credible and inclusive political transition.”
The region is the heartland of the Alawite *********, and a stronghold of the Assad family, which belong to the sect.
Estimations of the number of people killed in the violence vary, and the BBC has been unable to independently verify them.
Residents say they have been the targets of sectarian violence, with one Alawite woman telling BBC Arabic that many Syrians are “scared” regardless of if they were on the coast or in the capital.
She added that “everyone is terrified from the current incitement”, and fears they will become “scapegoats”.
Turkey and Russia have warned that the bloodshed, the worse since the toppling of Assad in December, threatens the stability of the entire region.
Alawites, whose sect is an offshoot of Shia Islam, make up around 10% of Syria’s population, which is majority Sunni.

What is a Network Node?
What is a Network Node?
A network node is a connection point in a communications network. This point, often known as an endpoint, is attached to the network and can send and receive data over that network. It can also create and redistribute data along various network routes. Examples of endpoints or end nodes include computers, smartphones and printers.
Not all nodes are endpoints, however. Some nodes are intermediate nodes that don’t create or terminate data but rather direct it to the appropriate destination. Examples include routers and switches. Similarly, there are centralized nodes known as servers that store data and provide resources to other nodes in the network.
What is a computer network, and where do network nodes fit?
A computer network is a system of computers and computing devices connected via communication links. These links allow computers and other devices to send information over the network and share it among multiple digital devices, known as nodes.
Within a network, each node is often an endpoint for data transmissions or redistribution. Nodes have either a programmed or engineered capability to recognize, process and forward transmissions to other network nodes.
The concept of network nodes originated with the use of distributed networks and packet switching. Depending on the application, network nodes perform a variety of functions. Computer networks and the nodes connected to them make things like video streaming, social networks and cloud networks possible.
Computer networks can be physical or logical. A physical computer network is a “real” network comprised of cables and devices that send data back and forth. In contrast, logical networks are software representations of a physical network and are built on top of a physical network.
Regardless of the type, networks are governed by network protocols. These are the widely accepted and standardized rules defining how information is sent and received over a network. Networks can be defined by the protocols they use. They can also be defined by their geographic location, and the physical arrangement of the network components and their purpose.
The internet is an example of a computer network. It is made up of many smaller computer networks, each comprised of hundreds of thousands of nodes.
Examples of nodes in networking
Nodes are the building blocks of any network because they enable the flow of data, which then makes network communication possible. The data flows can be simple, such as file transfers between two laptops, or complex, such as between two servers in a data center.
In modern networks, the term “node” encompasses a wide variety of connecting entities. Examples of network nodes include the following:
Computers (PCs and laptops).
Smartphones and other network-connected mobile devices.
Servers.
Routers.
Switches.
Printers.
Sensors
IoT devices.
Network bridges that connect multiple LANs to form larger networks are also considered nodes.
What does a network node do?
A network node sits at a point in the network where it sends, receives, stores or creates information. It transmits data to communicate with other nodes in the network. Different nodes connect over a link or communication channel to form a network. These connections can be cable, fiber optic or wireless.
In a computer network, nodes can be physical networked devices, such as modems, PCs and printers. These devices recognize transmissions from other nodes and forward them to other nodes. Nodes like PCs and laptops can also share resource nodes like printers and files. Some nodes, like routers, can also forward data to ensure it reaches the appropriate destination.
The nodes connected to a network each have a unique IP address. It acts as an identifier that differentiates one node from another and helps with their discovery. Node discovery is often achieved with the help of automated tools that scan the network and create a visual display to show the various interconnections. Doing so can help with network troubleshooting and performance optimization. It can also help to identify unauthorized or potentially malicious devices connected to the network. The IP address is also needed to enable the node to access network resources and communicate with other nodes.
Modern nodes go way beyond simply facilitating data transfers. Depending on the application and network setup, nodes can also integrate cutting-edge technologies like cloud computing, edge computing and AI to perform more complex tasks like automations, data analysis and real-time data processing. Many nodes also incorporate security features like firewalls, data encryption and user authentication to protect data, prevent unauthorized access to the network, and reduce the probability of cyberattacks.
What are the types of network nodes?
There are several ways to categorize nodes. One is by network type, and another is by network topology.
Nodes by network type
Data communications. Data communications nodes are physical network nodes like data communications equipment or devices that sit between data terminal equipment (DTE) and data transmission circuits. These include switches, bridges, modems or hubs that perform signal conversion, coding and line clocking. These nodes also include DTE, such as digital telephone handsets, printers, routers, servers and workstations.
Internet network. On the internet and with intranets, most physical network nodes are host computers identified by an IP address. However, some data link devices, such as wireless LAN (WLAN) access points, do not have IP host addresses. They are considered physical network or LAN nodes rather than internet nodes or hosts.
LAN and wide area network (WAN). These nodes are devices that perform a specific function, such as printing, resource-sharing or troubleshooting network issues. Each LAN or WAN node must have a media access control address (MAC address) for each network interface card (NIC). Examples include modems with Ethernet interfaces, WLAN access points and computers.
Telecommunications network. In fixed telephone networks, nodes can be public or private telephone exchanges or computers that provide intelligent network services, such as data transfers or redistribution. In cellular communications, nodes include base station controllers that control one or more base stations.
Cable system. In cable systems, nodes use fiber optic cable to connect to businesses and homes served by a common fiber optic receiver within a geographic location. A fiber optic node describes the number of homes or businesses a specific fiber node can serve.
Nodes by network topologies
Another way to categorize nodes is by how they are arranged in a physical computer network. This is known as the network topology approach. Some common network topologies include the following:
Bus topology connects individual nodes directly to a main cable. A common example is cable broadband distribution networks.
Ring topology has nodes connected in a loop or ring; each node has a neighbor on each side and the data can pass either in one direction or in both directions. Metro networks usually connect their nodes using a ring topology.
Star topology connects all nodes to a central hub. Most wired home and office networks connect their nodes (PCs, printers, scanners, etc.) with a star topology.
Mesh topology has every node connected to every other node, creating multiple paths between various nodes in the network.
In addition to the above, network nodes can be connected using a hybrid topology. Such networks combine two or more topologies (ring and mesh, star and bus, etc.) to provide greater connection flexibility and scalability.
The nodes in the pictured topologies are represented by dots, and the communications links by lines.
What are examples and applications of network nodes?
Examples of how network nodes are used include the following:
Print request. An employee sends a print request from a computer to a printer in another office. The employee’s computer is a node on the network. The request travels over the network and through a series of other nodes — a router, for example — on the company LAN. The request reaches the printer, also a node; it processes the request and completes the printing job.
Base station controller. This is a node on a cellular network that provides intelligent network services to devices. The base station controller sits between the cell sites and the mobile switching center, which are also nodes on the cell network. Base station controllers determine how cell signals should be routed through the network.
Fog nodes give IoT and edge networks an extra boost.
Peer-to-peer mesh network. A peer-to-peer mesh network lets mobile devices communicate information without Wi-Fi or cellular service. In a mesh network topology, every node connects to every other node. Cellphones act as nodes and extend their signals to other cellphones in the network that might be experiencing a service outage. IBM’s The Weather Company uses this approach to transmit critical information when other networks are down.
Internet of things. IoT networks connect devices of all types — not just computers — to the internet. Each device is a node on the IoT network. Edge nodes create data from IoT devices. Fog nodes add another layer of physical servers, bringing real-time analytical processing to IoT networks.
Networks vary in size, connectivity, coverage and design. This guide examines the most common types of networks, along with their advantages and applications. Also, further explore the different types of network topologies.

Killing Floor 3 Delayed, Post-Launch Update To Undo A Controversial Change
Killing Floor 3 Delayed, Post-Launch Update To Undo A Controversial Change
Tripwire Interactive has announced that Killing Floor 3, which had been scheduled to release on March 25, has been delayed to an unspecified date later this year. A number of changes will be made to the game both for the new launch date and afterward.
Chief among those changes is a post-release update that will separate perk classes from characters, letting the two be chosen independently. The initial change to tie your class choice to a character proved to be contentious with some fans, mirroring similar complaints about Battlefield 2042’s debut with hero-style classes.
“With the full support of our parent company, Embracer Group, we’re working together on a timeline to address many of the common issues players had during the beta, including performance/stability, UI/UX, lighting, and weapon feel,” the studio said in a statement. “We can confirm that an update allowing you to independently select your perk class and character is planned for post-release.”
Refunds for preorders will vary between platforms. US-based PlayStation preorders will have the option to keep it or cancel, with non-responses being automatically canceled and refunded. Global PlayStation preorders will be automatically canceled and refunded too.
Xbox will automatically cancel all preorders and refunds are not necessary because the storefront only charges a user’s account 7-10 days before launch.
On PC, Epic Games Store preorders are automatically canceled and refunded while Steam preorders will remain active unless a user cancels and refunds theirs manually.
Killing Floor 3 is a multiplayer survival horror game. It takes place in 2091, 70 years after the events of Killing Floor 2. The mega-corporation Horzine has created a race of subservient and bioengineered zombies called Zeds. Nightfall, a rebel group, must fight back against the Zeds in order to save humanity.
Killing Floor 3 can be played solo or with up to five other people, and the game offers cross-play across all platforms. The game’s beta occurred last month, and GameSpot’s Killing Floor 3 hands-on impressions have been positive so far. We said, “Killing Floor 3 paints a terrific first impression, with impactful, gore-filled shooting and a promising glimpse of what can sustain it long-term.”

Escape from Tarkov’s Scavs Have Been Upgraded Based on Community Feedback
Escape from Tarkov’s Scavs Have Been Upgraded Based on Community Feedback
Battlestate Games recently carried out a survey in Escape from Tarkov geared towards gathering feedback centered on the ‘Scav’ player character. When folks play Escape from Tarkov, they can do so as a PMC, which is their dedicated character, or as a Scav, which is a randomised ‘local’ character that has many restrictions and drawbacks.
Following the collection of the survey results, Battlestate Games has already implemented some major changes to Scav characters. It was stressed that further changes are in the pipeline.
Find out below what Battlestate Games has done to upgrade Scavs.
Scav Life
The feedback received from the recent Escape from Tarkov survey revealed that 64% of players want to be able to ‘plan and control’ where their Scav character can go, which is mostly centered around picking the map they want to explore. Additionally, 84% of players confirmed that they only play as a Scav to perform loot runs and secure items to upgrade their in-game Hideout.
By comparison, 30% of players said that playing as a Scav should be truly random, right down to which map the player is forced to explore. Also, 2.6% of players admitted that they never play as a Scav character, and 6.6% play as a Scav to actively seek out PvP scraps with PMC characters.
To improve the state of play with Scav characters since the survey, Battlestate Games has made af few key changes:
Player Scavs will now spawn no earlier than 17 minutes after the start of the raid on all maps except for Reserve, Factory, and Ground Zero.
The Scav equipment system has been improved, and a higher fence rep will now reward a player with better Scav gear.
It was then promised that more optimisations are coming to the role that 97% of Tarkov players enjoy.
Escape from Tarkov remains at the top of the table where extraction shooters are concerned. It has been around for almost ten years and shows no signs of slowing down. In just a couple of months, players will be transitioning into another ‘wipe’ event.
