Gene Hackman’s Wife Betsy Arakawa Died Of Hantavirus Days Before His Passing, Authorities Reveal
Gene Hackman and wife Betsy Arakawa’s causes of death have been revealed. Authorities in Santa Fe, N.M., confirmed in a press conference on March 7 that the Oscar winner passed away from heart disease with Alzheimer’s as a contributing factor about a week after Betsy passed away from complications of hantavirus. New Mexico’s chief medical examiner, Dr. Heather Jarrell, explained that pills previously found near Betsy’s body were thyroid medication and did not contribute to her death. Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza said that Betsy, 65, was last seen alive in surveillance video from a local pharmacy on Feb. 11. Jarrell explained that Hackman, 95, likely passed away on Feb. 18, the date of his pacemaker’s last recorded activity. The couple was discovered deceased along with one of their three dogs on their Santa Fe property on Feb. 26.

Double ********* is first US inmate executed by firing squad in 15 years
A South Carolina man convicted of bludgeoning his ex-girlfriend’s parents to death has become the first US death row inmate to be executed by firing squad in the last 15 years.
Brad Sigmon was shot to death just after 18:00 local time (23:00 GMT) on Friday by three volunteers firing rifles at his chest with specially designed bullets.
Sigmon, 67, was convicted of murdering David and Gladys Larke with a baseball bat in 2001 before kidnapping his ex-girlfriend at gunpoint. She managed to escape as he shot at her.
Sigmon had requested death by firing squad over the other two state-approved methods of execution: electric chair and lethal injection.

Postecoglou keeps focus on Premier League for now
Postecoglou keeps focus on Premier League for now
Ange Postecoglou has stressed Tottenham cannot overlook the visit of Bournemouth in the Premier League on Sunday despite next week’s crucial Europa League last-16 tie with AZ Alkmaar.
Spurs were punished for a lacklustre display at AFAS Stadion on Thursday and a 1-0 first-leg loss means the prospect of silverware this season hangs in the balance.
Before Tottenham attempt to reach the Europa League quarter-finals, Bournemouth and highly rated boss Andoni Iraola arrive eager to increase the heat on Postecoglou, who will have key duo Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero available.
“The biggest game of the season is Sunday first,” Postecoglou said.
“We have to win on Thursday night and if we don’t, we’re out. In that context, it’s the only competition left for us to try to win something, so yeah it’s definitely the biggest game, but I’ve got to make sure none of them are thinking about that.
“I have to make sure they are all thinking about Sunday because Sunday is really important for us.
“Come Monday morning, we’ve got four days to prepare for a game where we are 1-0 down with a home game to come and that’s where our mindset should be, but before then, I really think it’s important we play well and get a result against Bournemouth.
“We still need to move up the table and can’t be dismissive of that.”
Postecoglou clarified on Friday that Van de Ven and Romero were kept on the bench due to the poor surface in Alkmaar. Meanwhile, Dominic Solanke could feature against his former club despite a painful blow to his back late on.
Consistency has been Tottenham’s Achilles heel all campaign, with notable November triumphs over Aston Villa and Manchester City sandwiched between a tepid display in defeat at home to Ipswich, while in January a fine victory over Liverpool was followed with a 2-1 loss to Leicester.
Injuries have not helped Postecoglou, but he acknowledged a lack of “middle ground” has been an issue.
Postecoglou added: “We’ve either played teams off the park and won really convincingly or lost. There hasn’t been a middle ground and you need middle ground for consistency.
“That was evident again (at Alkmaar). That was a game, as poor as we were, we still shouldn’t have lost.
“If our mindset was right, you get away with a draw and come back with a different scenario. That’s been the case in the league many times this year.
“That is part of our issue and some of it can be explained by our squad situation, but some of it can be explained by our approach and ability to get something out of a game that’s not going our way.
“Again, from my perspective, what’s important is we get a little bit more consistent in the way we approach things and I firmly believe that when we play our best football, as we have at times this year, we don’t need to fear anyone.”

DOGE says government paying for 11,020 Adobe Acrobat licenses with zero users, plus more ‘idle’ accounts
The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has been squandering money on thousands of unused software licenses, an audit found, according to DOGE.
For example, there were “11,020 Acrobat licenses with zero users,” DOGE noted in the post on X.
The list also included other examples.

DOGE’s “initial findings on paid software licenses” also included, “35,855 ServiceNow licenses on three products; only using 84,” “1,776 Cognos licenses; only using 325,” “800 WestLaw Classic licenses; only using 216” and “10,000 Java licenses; only using 400.”
“All are being fixed,” the tweet concluded.

Fox News Digital reached out to HUD and the White House on Friday, but did not receive comments by the time of publication.
“There are vast numbers of unused software licenses in every part of the government. Your tax dollars are being wasted,” Elon Musk wrote when commenting on the DOGE post.
Doge Initial Findings On Defense Department Dei Spending Could Save $80M, Agency Says
DOGE has previously made similar announcements regarding the General Services Administration (GSA), Department of Labor, Small Business Administration (SBA) and Social Security Administration (SSA).
“Agencies often have more software licenses than employees, and the licenses are often idle (i.e. paid for, but not installed on any computer),” the DOGE X account noted in a tweet.
“For example, at GSA, with 13,000 employees, there are,” the post listed, “37,000 WinZip licenses,” “19,000 training software subscriptions (and multiple parallel training software platforms),” “7,500 project management software seats for a division with 5,500 employees,” “3 different ticketing systems running in parallel.”
The tweet concluded by noting, “Fixes are actively in work.”
The DOGE GSA X account swiftly replied, indicating that cuts were on the way:
“Not for long…” a tweet read, with a scissor emoji added in an apparent signal that cuts were coming. “We will report back with progress shortly!”
Inside Elon Musk’s Huddle With Gop Senators: Doge Head Touts $4M Savings Per Day
GSA Acting Administrator and Deputy Administrator Stephen Ehikian replied, “Hope we didn’t make you wait too long… within 3 hours of @DOGE post, @USGSA is taking immediate action to reduce $5.5M of IT spend & working to identify additional reductions across all categories—ensuring strong stewardship of your tax dollars.”
Several days later, another DOGE post reported that GSA had made significant progress.
“Since this post, @USGSA took immediate action to reduce IT spend by deleting 114,163 unused software licenses & 15 underutilized / redundant software products — for a total annual savings of $9.6M,” DOGE noted.
A GSA spokesperson said in a statement to Fox News Digital, “In support of the administration’s priorities, efficiency and good stewardship, GSA is currently undertaking a review of its contracts and resources, including IT resources, to ensure our staff can perform their mission in support of American taxpayers. GSA has taken immediate action to fully implement all current executive orders and is committed to taking swift action to implement any new executive orders.”

Nintendo Switch 2 Specs Confirm Wi-Fi 6, Suggest Amiibo Compatibilities
Nintendo Switch 2 Specs Confirm Wi-Fi 6, Suggest Amiibo Compatibilities
In just over a month, players will have a better idea of what to expect from the Switch 2 when it’s showcased during a Nintendo Direct on April 2. Because Nintendo had to share certain technical specs with the Federal Communication Commission ahead of time, players are now privy to a few additional details about the upcoming console.
Via The Verge, the FCC has posted some of the Switch 2 technical specs online. While most of these reports are very dry with technical jargon, they do indicate that Switch 2 will support near field communication, or NFC, which is how the Amiibo figures were able to connect with Nintendo’s previous console to unlock new in-game content. It’s also been confirmed that the radio-frequency identification (RFID) feature is located in the right Joy-****, just as it was in the first Switch. While that’s not 100% confirmation that Amiibos will continue to be utilized with the Switch 2, it certainly seems likely that they will.
The FCC filings indicate that Switch 2 will support Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) networks with up to 80MHz of bandwidth. That’s an upgrade from the original Switch’s Wi-Fi 5 capabilities, but not as fast as Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7. These reports also confirm that Switch 2 has two USB-C ports, one at the top and one at the bottom. The system can be charged through either of those ports.
A previously released Japanese patent application revealed that Switch 2’s Joy-Cons will have mouse-like capabilities. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa recently suggested the company must push “beyond video games” to get people to engage with more than just its games and consoles. It’s not entirely clear what that means for Switch 2 yet, but hopefully more answers will be shared soon.

White House hosts crypto leaders as Trump moves to deregulate industry – National
White House hosts crypto leaders as Trump moves to deregulate industry – National
U.S. President Donald Trump wooed the cryptocurrency industry’s elite at the White House on Friday, hosting a first-of-its-kind summit focused on his plans for a government-owned stockpile of digital assets.
Trump welcomed a wide range of industry players including Zach Witkoff, one of the founders of the president’s own crypto business, World Liberty Financial, his social media posts showed.
In addition to top administration officials and lawmakers, guests in the White House’s State Dining Room included MicroStrategy CEO Michael Saylor, Coinbase co-founder and CEO Brian Armstrong, investors Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, and entrepreneur David Bailey.
A major focus of the event was Trump’s goal to build a strategic reserve containing bitcoin, which he formalized in an executive order on Thursday that also said there would be a stockpile of other digital assets.
That order directed the secretaries of Treasury and Commerce to develop “budget-neutral strategies” for acquiring additional bitcoin that have no “incremental costs” on taxpayers.
Story continues below advertisement
“We don’t want any cost to the taxpayers,” Trump said at the summit.
The reserve will be capitalized with bitcoin owned by the federal government that was forfeited as part of criminal or civil asset forfeiture proceedings, White House crypto czar David Sacks said in a post on social media platform X.

As Bitcoin surges past $100,000 USD, is investing in it safe?
Sacks told reporters at the White House that establishing a bitcoin reserve should have been done a long time ago. He said taxpayer funds would not be used to acquire digital assets and that there were existing protections in place to safeguard consumers from crypto investments.
The plans disappointed some in the market who had hoped for a firm plan to buy new tokens. The announcement weighed on the price of bitcoin, last down 3.4% at $86,394.
“This (strategic reserve) is going to be the biggest point of contention for many of us,” said JP Richardson, co-founder and CEO of Exodus, a bitcoin wallet developer. Although he owns the four coins other than bitcoin that Trump has suggested including in the reserve, he does not think they have a place in a strategic reserve.

“Crypto has made big strides, but it’s still a relatively nascent industry,” Richardson said. Other coins are smaller and function in a very different way, one he said may create more risk.
U.S. regulator allows banks to engage in crypto activity
Separately Friday, the U.S. regulator overseeing national banks clarified that banks can engage in some crypto activities, and removed expectations firms should receive advance permission from regulators before doing so.

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency said in a statement that national banks are permitted to engage in some crypto activities, such as crypto-asset custody, some stablecoin activities, and participation in distributed ledger networks.
The OCC also rescinded prior guidance telling banks they should clear crypto activities with regulators beforehand, including showing they have adequate controls in place for that business.

‘Trump bump’: Why the U.S. election results are driving up stocks, crypto
Rodney Hood, acting comptroller, said in a statement that the new guidance makes clear banks must have risk management in place regardless of technology.
Story continues below advertisement
“Today’s action will reduce the burden on banks to engage in crypto-related activities and ensure that these bank activities are treated consistently by the OCC, regardless of the underlying technology,” Hood said in a statement.
Specifically, the OCC on Friday rescinded guidance for banks issued under former President Joe Biden’s administration, which effectively set additional guardrails for banks seeking to engage in some crypto activities. The rescinded letters told banks they should brief their supervisors on crypto activities beforehand, show how they would handle risks, and ensure the supervisor had no objection.
The OCC also withdrew from joint statements previously issued by U.S. regulators effectively cautioning banks against engaging with crypto. One such statement, issued in 2023, did not prohibit banks from doing crypto business, but warned the sector is prone to “significant volatility” and said any bank activities would be closely scrutinized.

Officials, executives praise Trump for reversing Biden regulations
Officials invited to the summit praised Trump and executives for clearing the way for the industry’s growth. Other industry executives said it was good to see the administration being collaborative with the industry after years in which some felt they were under attack over security and consumer protection issues.
Story continues below advertisement
“For the first time, industry leaders feel they’re walking into a collaborative discussion,” said Les Borsai, co-founder of Wave Digital Assets, a crypto investment adviser, who said he did not receive an invitation.
Trump was upbeat about the crypto industry’s prospects, telling the summit, “We feel like pioneers in a way.”

He added: “From this day on, America will follow the rule that every bitcoin knows very well, never sell your bitcoin. That’s a little phrase that they have. I don’t know if that’s right or not. Who the hell knows, right? Who knows? Who knows, but so far, it’s been right, and well, let’s keep it that way.”
Trump’s executive order spells out that the government’s own bitcoin holdings should never be sold.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told the event the U.S. was going to keep the dollar as the world’s reserve currency and use stablecoins to do that.
Story continues below advertisement
In a post on X, Brad Garlinghouse, CEO of technology company Ripple, who attended the summit, said he welcomed Trump’s recognition that the world of cryptocurrencies stretched beyond bitcoin. XRP, the coin tied to Ripple, is one of the four other cryptocurrencies Trump has suggested may be added to a crypto reserve.
Attendees said they were optimistic about working with an administration that views crypto as a mainstream asset class and expressed hope for a straightforward regulatory process.
“What everyone really needs to have at this point is clarity on what the level of scrutiny and intensity of regulation will be, who the key regulators will be,” said Yesha Yadav, associate dean and professor of law at Vanderbilt University.
That could speed up the process of approval by the Securities and Exchange Commission of a flurry of new listings of exchange-traded funds.
Trump’s family has launched cryptocurrency meme coins and he also holds a stake in World Liberty Financial, a crypto platform, which has sparked some conflict-of-interest concerns.
His aides have said Trump has handed over control of his business ventures, which are being reviewed by outside ethics lawyers. The White House did not respond to a request for comment.

Marco Rubio Finally Loses It at Elon Musk in Trump Cabinet Meeting
Marco Rubio Finally Loses It at Elon Musk in Trump Cabinet Meeting
Secretary of State Marco Rubio, alongside other miffed agency heads, laid into billionaire bureaucrat Elon Musk during Thursday’s meeting of Donald Trump’s Cabinet, according to The New York Times.
During the meeting, the head of the Department of Government Efficiency complained that Rubio had fired “nobody,” despite the sweeping government layoffs recommended by his organization.
The secretary of state, who was already seething after Musk had axed USAID, an agency within Rubio’s purview, unleashed onto Musk in front of the president’s entire Cabinet.
Rubio claimed that Musk was lying, conveniently forgetting the 1,500 officials who had taken the government’s offer for deferred resignation. Rubio even asked whether Musk wanted him to hire all of them back, just so he could fire them in a more outrageous fashion, according to the Times. Rubio then tried to lay out his plans to reorganize his agency, which didn’t impress the DOGE czar, either.
Musk remarked that it was a good thing Rubio was so “good on TV.”
In the end, Trump defended Rubio, who he said was doing a “great job” and was incredibly busy implementing Trump’s agenda.
About 700 State Department employees, including 450 career diplomats, have resigned in the last two months. The Times reported Friday that senior officials at the State Department have drawn up plans to close a dozen consulates overseas by the summer, and are considering wider shutdowns—a move that will likely undermine U.S. soft power around the world.
Rubio wasn’t the only one who got into it with the DOGE czar. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy also got heated over Musk’s efforts to shrink the federal workforce, and accused him of trying to fire air traffic controllers. His accusation comes amid a national shortage of the highly essential workers, and following several high-profile plane crashes.
Musk said that Duffy’s claim was a “lie,” and the two went back and forth. When Musk demanded names, Duffy said there were none because he had stepped in before the positions could actually be terminated.
Musk then baselessly claimed that the Federal Aviation Authority had staffed air traffic control towers with so-called DEI hires, which Duffy denied. Trump ended that argument by demanding Duffy hire air traffic controllers who were “geniuses” from MIT, the Times reported.

A New Wireless Dreamcast Controller Is Available Now, Also Works On Switch And PC
A New Wireless Dreamcast Controller Is Available Now, Also Works On Switch And PC
The original Dreamcast controller was a revolutionary device when the console launched in the late ’90s, but in 2025, it might feel dated for retro gaming fans. Luckily, the Retro Fighters D6 wireless controller just launched, which aims to give Dreamcast fans a more modernized gamepad. It’s also compatible with the Dreamcast, Nintendo Switch, and PC, making it a great device for playing on original hardware or playing ports of Dreamcast games, such as the upcoming inclusions of Power Stone 1 and 2 in the Capcom Fighting Collection 2 launching later this year.
$55
Available in both ****** and white models, the Retro Fighters D6 Dreamcast wireless controller features a six-button design and a D-pad with dedicated Kailh micro-switches. There are also two customizable modes for the C and Z buttons, including a classic Dreamcast mode. It also uses 2.4 Ghz wireless technology via a dongle that can be inserted into a Dreamcast or other compatible devices. This makes it well-suited for fighting games on the Dreamcast, like Street Fighter Alpha 3, Soul Calibur, and Marvel vs Capcom 2. The Retro Fighters D6 Dreamcast wireless controller also works on PC and Nintendo Switch.
If you’re looking for other modern-style gamepads that are great for playing older video games, the upcoming 8Bitdo 64 Bluetooth controller is worth checking out. The wireless controller is geared toward people who are planning to pick up the new Nintendo 64 FPGA console, the Analogue 3D, but it will also be compatible with PC, Switch, and Android devices. The controller features a similar layout as the original N64 controller but with several improvements, including anti-drift Hall Effect sticks, a more modern ergonomic design, wireless Bluetooth connectivity, and support for 8BitDo’s desktop app that lets you customize button layouts and more.
The 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth controller is scheduled to launch for $40 on June 30 and will be available in ****** and white models. However, it’s likely that the launch date could change, considering the Analogue 3D console was recently delayed. Nevertheless, you can preorder both models at Amazon.

A 59-year-old *********** woman is reportedly in a serious but stable condition following a shark attack at a popular beach.
According to a report from Newscom.au, the attack happened at 1:40pm on Friday at Gunyah Beach, a village within the Royal National Park south of Sydney. The woman reportedly suffered serious injuries to her right leg including a laceration that led to significant blood loss, according to *********** Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).
“The bystanders that assisted before we got there were just absolutely remarkable,” Acting Inspector Andrew Bibby from New South Wales Ambulance said. “The first aid they applied was absolutely spot on and really laid a great foundation for the work we were able to do to try and stabilise her.”
Bibby revealed the bystanders used beach towels to help stop the bleeding.
“They’d used towels to try and stem the bleeding … they put a towel around her leg as a makeshift tourniquet and used some other towels to try and pack the wound to stop the bleeding — they did an amazing job,” he said.
The woman, who was airlifted to St George Hospital in a serious but stable condition, was able to speak with medical personnel after she was stabilized immediately following the attack.
“She was able to tell us she felt a strike to the leg very unexpected with immediate excruciating pain,” Bibby said. “She didn’t report seeing what caused it but most likely a shark, we would think.”
According to Newscom.au, Marine Area Command conducted extensive patrols with police but have been unable to locate the shark.
“All beaches in the local vicinity have been closed with the general public advised not to swim,” a spokesman said.

Hunter Biden Claims He’s Been Left Homeless After $4 Million Malibu Rental Home Was Made ‘Unlivable’ by California Wildfires
Hunter Biden Claims He’s Been Left Homeless After $4 Million Malibu Rental Home Was Made ‘Unlivable’ by California Wildfires
Former President Joe Biden‘s son, Hunter Biden, claims he’s been left homeless—and unable to afford a new dwelling—amid ongoing money struggles after his $4 million Malibu rental property was left “unlivable” by the California wildfires.
According to new court documents filed by Hunter, 55, the luxury dwelling in which he had been living with his wife, Melissa, and their son, Beau, 4, was made “unlivable for an extended ******* of time” as a result of the Palisades fire, which began tearing through Los Angeles on Jan. 7.
Google Maps images of the neighborhood in which Hunter was living reveal that multiple homes in the community were obliterated by the blaze, with the artist’s reported dwelling seemingly reduced to a pile of rubble, although one property nearby is still standing.
The remaining dwelling is said to have been leased in the past by Hunter’s Secret Service detail, according to a 2023 report by DailyMail.com.
Hunter’s attorneys also shed light on his dire financial situation, revealing that the author and artist is struggling to make a living and cannot afford a new place to live, while asking a judge to end their client’s lawsuit against a former aide to President Donald Trump.
That lawsuit was originally filed in 2023 against Garrett Ziegler and centered around the publication of data from a laptop connected to Hunter, who accused the defendant of “accessing, tampering with, manipulating, [and] altering” the contents of the computer.
However, his attorneys now allege that he cannot afford to continue pursuing the legal case.

“Plaintiff has suffered a significant downturn in his income and has significant debt in the millions of dollars range,” Hunter’s lawyer states in the documents, according to The Hill.
“Moreover, this lack of resources has been exacerbated after the fires in the Pacific Palisades in early January upended Plaintiff’s life by rendering his rental house unlivable for an extended ******* of time.
“Plaintiff must focus his time and resources dealing with his relocation, the damage he has incurred due to the fires, and paying for his family’s living expenses as opposed to this litigation.”
The motion, which has been reviewed by Realtor.com®, claims that Hunter has suffered a significant financial downturn in recent months as a result of dwindling sales of both his memoir, “Beautiful Things,” and his artwork, which he states were his primary sources of income.
Hunter writes in the latest filing that his income has “decreased significantly” since late 2023, when he initially launched his lawsuit, claiming that in December of that year, he “sold 27 pieces for art at an average price of $54,481.48.” However, in the 15 months since, he has only sold “one piece for $36,000.”
Meanwhile, he says that his book sales fell from 3,161 in the six month ******* between April 1, 2023 and Sept. 20, 2023 to 1,100 over the last six months.
Hunter adds that he had been expecting to “obtain paid speaking engagements and paid appearances” off the back of the “positive feedback and reviews” of his book and artworks, but concedes that this “has not happened.”
Since July 2021, Hunter is reported to have lived in two rental homes on the same street, one of which offered four bedrooms, three bathrooms, and an art studio.

The other rental, which he is said to have moved to in July 2023, boasts three bedrooms and three bathrooms, as well as picturesque views.

“Plaintiff has had difficulty in finding a new permanent place to live as well as finding it difficult to earn a living,” his attorneys add.
Hunter—who is the father to five children—did not state where he is currently living with his wife and youngest child; however, he is known to have rented at least three properties in California since 2021.
The latest dwelling that he is understood to have been living in is reported to have been leased for anywhere from $15,000 a month to $20,000 a month.
Two of the homes that he is said to have occupied are located on the same street, where a second dwelling was also leased for his Secret Service detail, which he was afforded while his father was serving as president. However, when Trump was inaugurated on Jan. 20, 2025, Hunter’s government-funded protection ended.
One of the properties, which DailyMail.com reported as being rented by Hunter in 2023, is currently estimated to be worth $4.1 million per Realtor.com and boasts three bedrooms and three bathrooms.
The other, which he was understood to have been living in from July 2021, offered four bedrooms and three bathrooms, as well as an art studio inside a converted three-bedroom garage.
When the California wildfires first broke out in January, then-President Biden revealed that his son’s home may have been destroyed, telling reporters on Jan. 8: “It’s astounding what’s happening. There’s only one piece of good news. My son lives out here and his wife. They got a notification yesterday their home was probably burned to the ground. Today, it appears that may be still standing but I’m not sure.”

Actor Gene Hackman and wife Betsy Arakawa died of natural causes about a week apart
Actor Gene Hackman and wife Betsy Arakawa died of natural causes about a week apart

BBC News, Los Angeles
Watch: Officials reveal causes of death for Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa
Actor Gene Hackman died of natural causes about a week after his wife Betsy Arakawa, who died after contracting a rare virus, says a New Mexico medical investigator.
The Oscar-winning actor, 95, died at his Santa Fe home from coronary artery disease, with advanced Alzheimer’s disease a contributing factor.
Ms Arakawa, 65, died in the same house from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), a rare but serious respiratory illness caused by exposure to infected rodent droppings.
Authorities believe she passed away about seven days before her husband. Her cause of death was listed as natural.
It is likely that Ms Arakawa died first on 11 February, Dr Heather Jarrell of the New Mexico Medical Investigator’s Office told a news conference on Friday.
She said it was “reasonable to conclude” that Hackman died on 18 February.
Ms Arakawa’s last known movements and correspondence were on 11 February, when she was seen going to a supermarket and returning home in the early evening.
Given that Hackman was in the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s disease it is “quite possible that he was not aware that she [his wife] was deceased”, said Dr Jarrell.
She told reporters she was “not aware of his normal daily functioning capability”.
He had “significant heart disease, and ultimately that’s what resulted in his death”, Dr Jarrell said.
He had not eaten anything recently, but showed no indications of dehydration, she added.
“It’s quite possible that he was not aware that she was deceased.”
HPS is transmitted through contact with rodent droppings, ****** or saliva, often when contaminated dust is inhaled.
At the press conference, New Mexico Public Health Veterinarian Erin Phipps emphasised that hantavirus infections are extremely rare.
She noted that 136 cases had been reported in the state over the past 50 years, and 42% resulted in fatalities.
Ms Phipps said evidence of rodent activity was found in some buildings on the property, though the risk inside the main house was considered “low”.
Investigators are trying to determine how Ms Arakawa contracted the illness. Hackman tested negative for hantavirus.
While rare, the disease can be lead to respiratory failure in some cases.
The couple, who had been married for more than 30 years, were found in their home after neighbourhood security conducted a ******** check and saw their bodies on the ground through the window.
Gene Hackman reflects on career and acting
The couple’s bodies were discovered in advanced stages of decomposition, suggesting they had been dead for several days before the wellness check that led to their discovery.
Hackman’s body was in a sideroom next to the kitchen, with a walking cane and a pair of sunglasses nearby, according to a search warrant affidavit.
Ms Arakawa’s body was found in the bathroom, with scattered pills near her.
Sheriff’s deputies found medication for thyroid and blood pressure treatment, along with pain reliever Tylenol, according to a court-filed inventory.
Citing privacy laws, authorities did not disclose who had been prescribed the drugs.
One of the couple’s three dogs was also found dead inside a crate near Ms Arakawa, while the other two dogs were alive.
The cause of death for the dog is yet to be determined, officials say.
Initial investigations found no signs of forced entry or foul play at their $3.8m (£3m) home. Tests for carbon monoxide poisoning were negative, and no significant gas leaks were detected.
Hackman is survived by three adult children from his previous marriage.

Tom Cruise movie halted as unnamed star injured on set
Tom Cruise movie halted as unnamed star injured on set
Tom Cruise’s latest film has halted production after a star was injured on set.
The 62-year-old actor plays a megalomaniac in the new movie – which currently has the working title of Judy – and will appear alongside John Goodman, Jesse Plemons, and Riz Ahmed on screen but production was reportedly stopped after an unnamed star was injured at London’s Pinewood Studios .
A source told The Sun: “The actor is renowned for loving spectacular stunts which obviously involve some element of danger and the risk of injury – though they always strive to keep any risk to an absolute minimum.”
The actor sustained injuries to his pelvis and leg and the insider claimed that because the individual is “very famous”, it will cost the production company “millions” while he is away.
The source added: “This incident won’t just be alarming in terms of having someone so famous suffer such a major injury, it will also prove costly on a project which has cost millions and is on a very tight schedule.”
Academy Award-winner Alejandro González Iñárritu is at the helm of the film – which is due to be released in October 2026 – and it will mark his first foray back into English language movies since The Revenant in 2015.

I compared GPT-4.5 to Gemini 2.0 Flash and the results surprised me
I compared GPT-4.5 to Gemini 2.0 Flash and the results surprised me
The release of GPT-4.5 for ChatGPT naturally leads to questions about how the model compares to its many rivals. After comparing it to GPT-4o and getting somewhat ambiguous results as to which model is preferable, I decided to go for a more direct competitor, Google Gemini, specifically the most recent Google Gemini Flash 2.p
GPT-4.5 claims to be better at emotional understanding and to offer fewer hallucinations than has been the case previously. Gemini Flash 2.0, meanwhile, is Google’s latest iteration of its quite successful set of AI models capable of juggling text, images, audio, and even video inputs. To put them both to the test, I came up with four prompts reflecting typical things an average person might genuinely need help with.
Weekend travel

First up was planning a quick weekend trip. I asked both AI chatbots to: “Plan a weekend getaway to the Catskills, including hiking recommendations and dining and accommodation options.”
ChatGPT 4.5 whipped up a neat itinerary suggesting several hikes at different trail difficulties and durations along with nearby dining spots and a place to stay that had the vibe of a cozy, laid-back weekend. It also offered some extra advice about getting there. Gemini had plenty of good hiking and dining recommendations too, but its only advice on places to stay was towns in the general area, so not quite as proactive in its answer.
Translation Total
(Image credit: ChatGPT / Gemini Screenshots)
I decided to try a simple translation test next as that’s always a popular use of AI chatbots. I asked the two AI chatbots to: “Translate the phrase ‘Good morning’ into French, Spanish, and Japanese.” As you can see above, the only difference is the links from GPT-4.5. So for basic translation among widespread languages, there’s really no major difference.
Laugh AI

Then came the humor test, asking each AI to: “Tell me a joke about artificial intelligence.” GPT 4.5 amused me with the corny pun: “Why did the AI go to art school? Because it wanted to learn how to draw its own conclusions.” Gemini went with an equally silly pun, “Why did the AI break up with its chatbot girlfriend? Because she kept giving it scripted responses!” Admittedly Gemini’s joke isn’t amazing, but I’d put it at the same level as GPT-4.5 in terms of actual humor.

Weather measure
I ended with a classic question about weather here in Nyack, New York. This one drew the biggest difference in responses. Gemini gave just the current weather, but GPT-4.5 did an hourly measurement with images denoting the weather along with the words.

Match met
After all this testing, I have to admit I can’t honestly say that one of the AI chatbots is better than the other. GPT-4.5 and Gemini had some differences, especially with the weather option, but otherwise, you wouldn’t notice unless you’re also the kind of person who thinks there’s a huge difference between Coke or Pepsi. You’ll get answers, you’ll get some mild amusement, and you’ll probably still end up double-checking Google or asking a real person just to be sure.
