  1. Canada suspends imports from biggest US pork processing plant Canada suspends imports from biggest US pork processing plant By Tom Polansek CHICAGO (Reuters) -Canada has blocked imports from the biggest U.S. pork processing plant, a facility run by Smithfield Foods in Tar Heel, North Carolina, the company said on Friday. The suspension comes as Washington and Ottawa have sparred in a heated dispute over trade tariffs. It is the latest blow for America’s farm sector, which has been roiled by concerns that U.S. tariffs will spark retaliation from top importers that reduces demand for American agricultural products. The U.S. Department of Agriculture said the suspension was in line with standard protocols and unrelated to recent trade activity. The agency and Smithfield, the largest U.S. pork processor, did not specify what triggered Canada’s action. “Under Canada’s policy, three noncompliance issues within six months trigger a temporary suspension,” USDA said. Blocking shipments from the plant limits a market for U.S. pork products. USDA is working with Smithfield to address the issues and develop a corrective action plan that will be communicated to ********* authorities, according to an agency statement. “Once reviewed and accepted, Canada may consider reinstating the plant’s export eligibility,” USDA said. Canada halted imports from the facility on Thursday, according to a USDA website. “The issue pertains to a limited number of certain offal shipments,” Smithfield spokesman Jim Monroe said. Smithfield shares were nearly flat on Friday. U.S. President Donald Trump exempted goods from Canada and Mexico on Thursday under a North American trade pact for a month from the 25% tariffs he imposed earlier this week. Canada was the fifth-largest export market for U.S. pork last year, according to U.S. government data. Though shipments slipped, they were valued at about $850 million. U.S. pork has a significant presence in the ********* retail and foodservice sectors, said Joe Schuele, spokesman for the U.S. Meat Export Federation, an industry group. Smithfield, whose brands include Eckrich and Nathan’s Famous, returned to a U.S. exchange in January after more than a decade, in a spinoff by Hong Kong-based WH Group. 3. Tesco trials giant trolley scales in Gateshead Tesco trials giant trolley scales in Gateshead Jennifer Meierhans Business reporter, BBC News Reddit A Reddit user posted a picture of the new scales in the Gateshead Trinity Square Extra store Giant trolley scales are being trialled at a Tesco store in Gateshead sparking a mixed reaction from shoppers. Trolleys are weighed before checkout to identify any items customers who have used Scan as you Shop might have missed or scanned twice. But some shoppers are unsure whether the new technology will take off with some likening it to airport security. “Am I at border control or Tesco?” one Reddit user posted, while another joked “No clubcard? Deported!” Others questioned whether the scales were aimed at cracking down on self-scan shoplifters or cutting back on checkout staff. Tesco declined to comment. Tesco Clubcard members already have the option to use Scan as you Shop handsets as they fill their trolleys then check out and pay at the end. Now in the Gateshead Trinity Square Extra store, shoppers can push their trolley on to the scales and if the weight matches the items they’ve scanned they pay as normal. If there is a discrepancy a staff member will do a manual rescan of the whole trolley. ‘Treated like a thief’ Although some Reddit users who commented on the photo of the scales were positive with one saying “they are 10x more convenient and faster”, many were more critical of their introduction. “More and more the honest shopper is treated like a thief,” one said, while another wrote “the point of all this is to save on staff”. Business retail consultant Ged Futter told the BBC this was about loss prevention and staffing costs. “There is no way this is about making it quicker for the shopper. It’s supposed to be scan and go – this is scan and stop while your trolley is weighed.” He said self-scan had increased the rate of shoplifting but instead of putting staff back on tills, supermarkets were trying to use even more technology to stop thefts. “This is supermarkets saying, ‘we know there are thefts so what we are going to do is treat every customer in exactly the same way to reduce theft’. “They’re forgetting that trust is the most important thing for all of the retailers and it works both ways. If customers don’t feel trusted or think they’re being treated like thieves they will go somewhere else.” Getty Images Tesco has already invested heavily in Scan as you Shop technology The British Retail Consortium has said shoplifting is “out of control” after its annual crime survey found incidents of customer theft reported by retailers in the *** rose by 3.7 million to 20.4 million, and cost retailers £2bn. Separate figures published by the Office for National Statistics revealed shoplifting offences reported by police in England and Wales rose by 23% to more than 492,000 over the same *******. That is the highest figure since current recording practices began in 2003. Retail criminologist Prof Emmeline Taylor told the BBC she had seen similar trolley scales used in European supermarkets and there was “definitely an element of trying to control loss” but added “let’s not forget a lot of scan and go loss can be accidental”. A random audit of 20,000 scan and go baskets found 43% had at least one error, a 2022 global study on self-checkout found. Prof Taylor said Tesco’s scales were “quite foreboding and reminiscent of security scanners”. “They don’t want to give the impression that they are pointing the finger at their honest customer,” she said. “They will need to balance how they respond when there is a weight discrepancy because you can lose a customer for life if they feel they’ve been wrongly accused of something.” She said she could see customers getting frustrated using the scales. “You’ve left your handbag in the trolley, you’ve got to take your child out of the seat, you might be queueing behind someone who has been stopped and you can’t get through so the trial needs to focus on minimising friction points in the customer experience.” The scales are the latest example of supermarkets turning to technology to streamline time and costs. The ratio of self-scan to staffed tills continues to be fiercely debated. Some shoppers love the speed and convenience while others are fed up of hearing “unexpected item in the bagging area”. In August upmarket north of England supermarket chain Booths got rid of self-scan altogether, while Asda and Morrisons said they would put more staff back on manned tills. 5. People Are Pointing Out Elon Musk’s Double Standards Following The SpaceX Starship Explosion People Are Pointing Out Elon Musk’s Double Standards Following The SpaceX Starship Explosion Editor’s Note: While we can’t endorse what X has become, we can bring you the worthwhile moments that still exist there, curated and free of the surrounding chaos. On Thursday, Elon Musk‘s SpaceX launched an uncrewed Starship rocket that exploded during a test flight. People across Florida and the Caribbean reported the explosion, with many videos of it circulating across social media. Person wearing a jacket and cap speaking inside a room with a window in the background The “rapid unscheduled assembly” (SpaceX’s term for an explosion) occurred just two months after the previous test flight, which also ended up exploding. In both instances, nearby airports delayed flights due to the debris. Rocket launching, smoke billowing at the base, tall launch tower in the background, clear sky The consecutive failures sparked online criticism of Elon, especially since DOGE is supposedly concerned with removing monetary waste and incompetence from the government. According to Reuters, SpaceX President and COO Gwynne Shotwell has said the company has around $22 billion in government contracts. Here’s what the internet is saying: 1.”Yet another rapid unplanned disassembly of Starship. This time over the Bahamas. Perhaps Elon should spend more time trying to keep his cars and rockets from blowing up rather than trying to disassemble our government and ****** the economy.” Tweet joking about a rocket disassembly in the Bahamas, suggesting Elon Musk focus on his company’s products instead of economic disruption 2.”The explosion of SpaceX’s Starship is a good metaphor for Trump’s failed presidency — except the whole country is dealing with the debris.” Tweet by Jon Cooper: “The explosion of SpaceX’s Starship is a good metaphor for Trump’s failed presidency—except the whole country is dealing with the debris.” 3.”DOGE needs to go over to SpaceX and figure out what the ***** is wrong. Fire 60-70% of the people because every Starship explodes in flight. At a minimum get rid of all the probationary hires.” Tweet criticizing SpaceX’s handling of Starship explosions, suggesting firing 60-70% of staff, especially probationary hires They, of course, appear to be speaking hyperbolically. 4.”Watching SpaceX Starship explode while citizens in this country can’t afford healthcare is so American.” Tweet by user Jimmy J: “Watching SpaceX Starship explode while citizens in this country can’t afford healthcare is so American.” 5.”SpaceX’s Starship failure over the Bahamas is just another example of Musk’s overhyped tech falling apart, literally. Time to rethink his unchecked influence and prioritize safety over spectacle.” Tweet criticizing SpaceX Starship’s failure in the Bahamas, urging reconsideration of Elon Musk’s tech influence and advocating safety over spectacle 6.”If NASA had the failure rate SpaceX does, Elon Musk would be firing everyone and Congress would be demanding to know where the money is going.” Tweet criticizing SpaceX’s failure rate compared to NASA, implying accountability issues with Elon Musk and Congress 7.”Remember when Elon Musk attacked our astronauts, claiming that NASA wouldn’t let SpaceX pick up the people stranded on the ISS. Yeah — I’m sure ‘politics’ is the reason they don’t want to use the SpaceX Starship.” Tweet discussing Elon Musk’s criticism of NASA for not allowing SpaceX to assist astronauts on the ISS, sarcastically dismissing “politics” as a reason 8.”#PresidentMusk had another great day with tax payer’s money. Starship #8.” Tweet suggests President Musk spent taxpayers’ money on Starship #8; tone implies criticism 9.”Lemme get this straight… Elon Musk’s rockets keep exploding. His car sales are tanking. His stock is down about 30% in a month. He’s firing people only to realize he made an oopsie and tries to rehire them. He’s implementing Donald Trump’s bad policies that are tanking the economy. And MAGA worships this guy?” Tweet criticizing Elon Musk for business issues, stock decline, firing decisions, and implementing controversial policies, with a skeptical emoji 10.”Good morning and Happy Friday to everyone who is not surprised one bit that Queen Karma caused a rapid unscheduled disassembly to BOTH trump’s tariffs AND Elon’s SpaceX rockets on the same ******** day. Bada *****.” Tweet humorously mentions karma causing problems for Trump’s tariffs and Elon Musk’s SpaceX rockets 11.”#Starship tumbling out of control. X is overrun with bots. Elon…get control of your own house before you fire any more federal employees.” Tweet criticizing Elon Musk’s handling of Starship and X, mentioning bots and federal employees 12.”This seems an appropriate time to mention DOGE has found exactly zero dollars wasted in Elon’s tens of billions in government funding. Most strange.” Tweet by Alex Cole jokes about zero dollars being wasted in government funding by Elon, mentioning DOGE 13.”He is filling the world with his garbage I hate him so much.” Tweet reads: “He is filling the world with his garbage I hate him so much.” 14.”Elon Musk and SpaceX blow up another rocket funded by $20+ billion in American taxpayer dollars. Good thing no lives are being lost when these rockets blow up. But Musk is overseeing government fraud, waste, and abuse? I suppose our Thank You card is in the mail.” Tweet criticizing Elon Musk and SpaceX for rocket failures funded by taxpayer money, questioning oversight, and making a sarcastic remark about gratitude 15.And finally, “Elon is the biggest ******** queen on the planet.” Tweet by John Pavlovitz: “Elon is the biggest ******** queen on the planet.” What’s your honest opinion of Elon Musk? 9. Jonas vs Price: Caroline Dubois retains IBF lightweight title with majority decision win over Bo Mi Re Shin Jonas vs Price: Caroline Dubois retains IBF lightweight title with majority decision win over Bo Mi Re Shin Britain’s Caroline Dubois was taken the distance by Bo Mi Re Shin but claimed victory by majority decision to retain her IBF lightweight title at the Royal Albert Hall. Dubois, 24, showed great shot selection and neat footwork to come through her second defence of the belt on the all-female card to mark International Women’s Day on Saturday. The scorecards read 98-93 98-92 to Dubois, with one judge seeing it as a 95-95 draw. “It was very rough and tough. Watching her fights previously with the team, that’s what she does. Charges in, head down and swings. She did exactly what I expected,” Dubois told Sky Sports. “I feel like I need to learn how to fight on the inside. It’s one thing doing it in sparring, but it’s another thing doing it in the ring. The crowd, the lights, the judges, it’s important to master that. I tried to do it, I don’t know if I was successful but I tried.” Dubois was upgraded to world champion after Katie Taylor vacated her belt. Her first defence, against Jessica Camara in January, ended in a technical draw after a clash of heads. The Englishwoman is undefeated in 12 professional fights and has expressed a desire to be “undisputed champion by the end of the year”. Underdog Shin was on a three-fight winning streak since losing a close decision to former world champion Delfine Persoon in May 2023. The contest was chief support to the welterweight unification world-title fight between Natasha Jonas and Lauren Price, which takes place later on Friday. Shin looked game in the opening round, landing a left hook as Dubois attacked the body, but the champion proved far too slick and sent the challenger stumbling across the ring with a right hook of her own. Dubois invested in shots to the body early and showed great agility to create angles before resetting and coming again. Shin was rocked twice in the fourth, initially by a three-punch combination before a Dubois right hook drew a reaction on the bell. Trainer Shane McGuigan urged Dubois to take her time before round six and she responded by picking her shots more carefully. South Korean Shin, who has not lost inside the distance in 23 previous fights, showed durability – even if she was unable to match the output of her opponent. Dubois was stung with a straight right in the ninth and looked reckless in the final round as both fighters let their hands fly for a highly entertaining two minutes. An all-British affair with WBO lightweight champion Terri Harper, who faces Natalie Zimmerman on 23 May, could be on the agenda for Dubois next, while Beatriz Ferreira holds the IBF belt and Stephanie Han is the WBA champion. FLCL is often cited as one of the best anime ever thanks to its exquisite animation, incredible soundtrack from rock band The Pillows, and a touching tale that has stood the test of time. Another sci-fi classic that’s easy to recommend is Cowboy Bebop for $30 (was $50), the beloved show about bounty hunters barely scraping by as they explore our local neck of the cosmos. The animation still looks incredible, the action pulls no punches, and there’s even a lovable Corgi–what more could you ask for? Moving to the modern era, Vinland Saga is an easy recommendation, especially the second season that transitioned the show from a rip-roaring action series into a thought-provoking examination of revenge, redemption, and forgiveness. 14. Defensive mix up helps Toulouse draw with Monaco Defensive mix up helps Toulouse draw with Monaco A last-minute defensive mix up has allowed Frank Magri to rescue a point for Toulouse against high-flying Monaco in a stodgy 1-1 draw in Ligue 1. Japanese winger Takumi Minamino gave Monaco the lead 17 minutes in when he tapped in a cross from Mika Biereth. That looked certain to give Monaco their first away win since before Christmas, but then their goalkeeper and a defender collided on the edge of their own box in the 90th minute to allow Magri in and score. Keeper Radoslaw Majecki redeemed himself seconds later with a world-class save to stop Toulouse from taking all three points, but the draw cost Monaco ground in the race for a top-three finish. The top three qualify automatically for next season’s Champions League and Monaco are fourth, two points behind Nice and three ahead of Lille, who have a game in hand against bottom club Montpellier on Saturday. Toulouse remain eighth, a point ahead of Lens and Brest. Tesla stock falls 45% from record high, a ‘gut check moment’ that has Wall Street bulls doubling down Tesla stock falls 45% from record high, a ‘gut check moment’ that has Wall Street bulls doubling down Tesla (TSLA) stock fell nearly 11% this week, bringing its losses from a record close to nearly 50% as it continues to see its post-election rally fade. NasdaqGS – Delayed Quote • USD This drop in shares of the EV carmaker prompted Wedbush analyst Dan Ives — one of Tesla’s biggest bulls on Wall Street — to issue a forceful defense of the stock, doubling down on his bullish views during what he calls a “gut check moment for the Tesla bulls (including ourselves).” In a note to clients published late Thursday, Ives wrote “the time has come” to defend the stock, adding Tesla to the firm’s “Best Ideas List” and reiterating his Outperform rating and $550 price target on the name. Ives’s call came after Tesla stock fell 5.7% Thursday, a move that followed others on the Street saying CEO Elon Musk’s controversial association with the Trump administration was clouding sentiment on the stock. Tesla stock closed at a record of over $479 on Dec. 17. Shares have fallen roughly 45% from that high, ending Friday’s trading session at roughly $263, their lowest closing price since Nov. 5. “There have been a number of times in the Tesla story over the past decade that negative sentiment and Street worries have overshadowed the narrative of this unique disruptive global tech story,” Ives wrote. “From the white knuckle production moments in 2017/2018 to financing worries to the Musk/Twitter soap opera in 2022 … and now here again Tesla bulls find themselves with their back against the wall facing global negative sentiment around Musk/DOGE and the Trump Administration. “This is a gut check moment for the Tesla bulls (including ourselves) after this massive sell-off in Tesla shares with fears mounting.” Ives holds the highest price target for Tesla among the 48 Wall Street analysts tracked by Yahoo Finance. On average, Wall Street analysts have a $346 per share price target on the stock over the next 12 months. Shares closed Thursday’s trading sessions at $263. Tesla stock in February recorded its biggest decline to date. Shares have given up nearly all of their gains that followed the election of Donald Trump. (AP Photo/Ben Curtis) · ASSOCIATED PRESS In Ives’s view, Musk’s foray into politics puts less than 5% of Tesla’s global sales at risk despite what Ives calls “the global draconian narrative for Musk.” “Importantly,” Ives added, “we expect Musk will better balance his time between DOGE and Tesla/SpaceX over the course of 2025 and some of these distraction issues will fade. We continue to believe the best thing that ever happened to Musk and Tesla was Trump in the White House as this will create a deregulatory environment with a federal autonomous roadmap central to the Tesla golden strategic vision.” Story Continues Source link #Tesla #stock #falls #record #high #gut #check #moment #Wall #Street #bulls #doubling Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

This Iconic Restaurant Chain Is Making Some Big Changes To Revamp Its Image This Iconic Restaurant Chain Is Making Some Big Changes To Revamp Its Image Half a sandwich with prime rib, several yellow cheeses, and a cheese bun, with a side of french fries and a small ****** cup of ketchup – FOOD PHOTO STOCK/Shutterstock 2024 was a difficult year for the restaurant industry, but Applebee’s has been suffering poor business for years. With the brand in dire need of a refresh, some locations are taking big steps toward a new and (hopefully) more profitable Applebee’s experience to bring customers back. Major restaurant franchisor Dine Brands recently announced its “Lookin’ Good” program to radically redesign 47 Applebee’s locations. Among these, 30 remodels will be completed in 2025. However, Applebee’s is not facing this rebrand entirely alone. Dine Brands will be combining five Applebee’s locations with another one of its iconic chain restaurants, IHOP, to expand on a successful dual restaurant concept. Applebee’s reimagining is meant to improve customer satisfaction with an updated menu focusing on value. These Applebee’s locations will feature modern designs and kitchens streamlined for offsite business like take-out and delivery, which Dine Brands says now accounts for a significant percentage of its business. Read more: 13 Fast Food Onion Rings, Ranked Worst To First An Applebee’s logo sign on a medium brown wall with a farmhouse-style roofline against a blue sky – Artography/Shutterstock Plagued by a legacy of scathing Applebee’s reviews online, the chain has already made several bold steps toward a rebrand. In 2021, Applebee’s launched a branding campaign around country music after the song “Fancy Like” by Walker Hayes, which prominently features the restaurant in its lyrics, went viral. The song temporarily boosted Applebee’s sales, but the benefits did not last forever. It’s been a long slide down for a chain restaurant that was once at the forefront of industry technology. Applebee’s was an early adopter of ziosks, the table-mounted tablets that let customers easily place and edit orders. These were available at some Applebee’s as early as 2014. Another revolutionary concept that has performed well for Applebee’s is its combination restaurants with IHOP. Applebee’s/IHOP locations proved popular enough internationally that they were introduced to the U.S. last year, where, according to CEO John Payton, they generated as much as twice the revenue as standalone locations for either brand. Expanding this dual restaurant concept should help continue to grow Applebee’s financial prospects. Hungry for more? The ban would fall under an executive order, signed by the president on Jan. 20, titled “Protecting the United States from Foreign Terrorists and Other,” meant to address “national security and public safety threats.” The order claims it will protect U.S. citizens from “aliens who intend to commit terrorist attacks, threaten our national security, espouse hateful ideology, or otherwise exploit the immigration laws for malevolent purposes.” ‘Passports taken by the government’: How new State Department rule blocks trans travelers It gave Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Attorney General Pam Bondi, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard a deadline of 60 days from the order – in about two weeks – to identify such countries and enact the ban. The White House did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment. According to the reports, the draft identifies “red list” countries as Sudan, Venezuela, Somalia, Syria, Yemen, Iran, Libya, Cuba and North Korea – which Trump previously banned or restricted – to be barred from traveling to the U.S. Pakistan and Afghanistan are expected to be added to the list. Countries coded as “orange” will have limited but not completely prohibited access, and “yellow” countries will have 60 days to address any “deficiencies” before facing restrictions. It’s unclear if those with valid visas will lose their permitted entry into the U.S. Which countries did Trump ban last time? President Donald Trump speaks in the Oval Office, on the day he signs executive orders, at the White House in Washington, D.C., on March 6, 2025. In 2017, during Trump’s first term, the president created a series of bans against citizens from *******-majority countries. Those from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen were banned for 90 days, refugees for 120 days were blocked, and travel from Syria was suspended. How long did the ban last? President Joe Biden reversed Trump’s initial round of travel bans when he took office on Jan. 20, 2021. How would the ban affect American travelers? Americans could face an increased risk of harassment when traveling abroad to the countries the Trump administration is targeting, experts said. American Society of Travel Advisors CEO Zane Kerby told Travel Weekly that “blanket ‘entire country’ travel bans constrain legitimate business and discourage friendly foreign visitors” and “risks retaliation from targeted countries and their allies.” Contributing: Nathan Diller, USA TODAY This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: Trump administration plans new travel ban—here’s who could be affected Source link #Trump #administration #plans #travel #ban #Heres #affected Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

  25. Utah senator announces he’s leaving the Republican party, joining Utah Forward Party Utah senator announces he’s leaving the Republican party, joining Utah Forward Party Sen. Daniel Thatcher, R-West Valley City, speaks against HB267, a bill that would ban collective bargaining for public employees, at the Capitol in Salt Lake City on Thursday, Feb. 6, 2025. (Photo by Spenser Heaps for Utah News Dispatch) This story is breaking and will be updated. A Republican Utah senator says he’s had enough of a party that he believes is becoming disconnected from Utahns and straying from true conservative and freedom-focused principles. Standing in the Utah Capitol rotunda, Sen. Dan Thatcher, of West Jordan, told a group of reporters Friday — the final day of the Legislature’s 2025 session — that he would be unaffiliating from the Republican Party. Instead, he said he’ll be joining the Utah Forward Party — a centrist party that has the slogan “Not left. Not right. Forward.” Standing alongside a handful of Forward Party leaders, Thatcher said he and his wife had been discussing the change for “a really, really long time.” But he said the Utah Legislature’s 2025 session (which has included legislation focused on facilitating the Trump administration’s deportation goals, restricting voting by mail, banning LGBTQ+ flags from schools and public property, and more) was the final straw — or bale of hay, as he put it — that broke the camel’s back. “Yes, this legislative session did accelerate the program, but I think this was always the way,” Thatcher said. “Because I can’t be a part of this anymore.” Thatcher then used a tablet to switch his party affiliation to the Utah Forward Party online, exclaiming “boop” when he submitted the change. “Guess what, I don’t have to be part of the crazy-making anymore.” Thatcher’s announcement comes as he said he’s been increasingly frustrated with not just the state of national politics, but also the general direction the Utah Republican Party has been heading. In recent years, he’s also become no stranger to bucking his party’s line, especially on LGBTQ+ issues. “I believe that at present, the Forward Utah Party represents a more conservative position than the Utah Republican Party,” Thatcher told Utah News Dispatch. “Because when they say ‘liberty,’ they mean liberty according to the dictates of your own conscience, not liberty as dictated by the Legislature.” The day before, on Thursday, Thatcher was one of the few Republicans to vote against two hotly debated bills, one to restrict LGBTQ+ flags in schools and city and county buildings, and one aimed at helping the Trump administration accomplish its deportation goals by repealing a 2019 law that shielded migrants from being deported if they commit a misdemeanor offense. Thatcher argued against the flag ban while wearing a yellow Gadsden flag pin with the “Don’t Tread On Me” logo. “I feel like we have been doing an awful lot of treading this year,” Thatcher said during Thursday’s debate. “And I think liberty is liberty, even if people want to liberty different than us.” SUBSCRIBE: GET THE MORNING HEADLINES DELIVERED TO YOUR INBOX During a contentious debate over the immigration bill, Thatcher said it “might be the worst bill I’ve seen this year,” arguing it would disproportionately target legal immigrants, since people without lawful status are already being deported. ICE doesn’t need a migrant in the country illegally to serve a one-year sentence to deport them — they can deport them for the lack of documentation alone. Thatcher has repeatedly clashed with fellow Republicans including Sen. Dan McCay, R-Riverton, who sponsored HB77, the bill banning pride flags from classrooms and city and county buildings. “We’re all dying with surprise,” McCay said sarcastically while standing outside the Senate chamber on Friday after catching word of Thatcher’s party change. Thatcher’s divorce from the Republican Party also comes amid rising tensions between him and Utah GOP leadership as he’s increasingly bucked the party line. Thatcher lost his longtime committee assignments ahead of the 2025 session. Senate President Stuart Adams, R-Layton, reassigned him from leadership of the Government Operations Interim Committee, and instead assigned Sen. Ron Winterton, R-Roosevelt — who led that committee in place of Thatcher as he recovered from a stroke that he suffered in 2022 — to chair that committee. Thatcher was also reassigned from the Senate Judiciary, Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Committee — which he sat on for 14 years — to instead serve on the Health and Human Services Committee. Senate leaders also recently moved Thatcher’s seat near the right side of the chamber, previously with other Republicans, to the far left side, next to the Democrats. Thatcher will no longer caucus with Senate Republicans. Asked who he will caucus with, Thatcher said, “that is a question for another day.” He was also adamant that he’ll continue to serve out his term, which doesn’t end until Jan. 1, 2027.
