  3. The GTA 6 delay is good for game, but that doesn’t mean I’m not disappointed The GTA 6 delay is good for game, but that doesn’t mean I’m not disappointed Table of Contents Table of Contents Rockstar can learn from previous games’ mistakes Grand Theft Auto 6 looks good. Really good Grand Theft Auto 6 has been officially delayed until May 26, 2026, and while that’s a bummer for fans who hoped to play this year, it’s probably good news for the game itself. In its explanation for the delay, Rockstar Games said, “With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.” It’s been more than a decade since Grand Theft Auto 5 was released, and people are still diving in and playing every single day. A game that can keep players engaged for that long doesn’t just happen by accident, so if a studio at the level of Rockstar Games says it needs more time, I’m inclined to trust them. That said, Rockstar does have a history of delays; GTA 5’s PC version was pushed back three different times. Late last year, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier said he would “be shocked” if Grand Theft Auto 6 actually launched in 2025. “Rockstar Games always slip,” he said. “Red Dead 2 would slip to spring 2018, and then fall 2018 and that was six years ago. Games are even more complicated, more moving pieces now.” Much of Grand Theft Auto 5’s success lies in GTA Online, its persistent online multiplayer mode. Even after fans have conquered all the secrets of the single-player game, they can take to GTA Online for more missions, heists, and other activities, either teaming up with other players or pitting themselves against them. Rockstar has offered continued support for GTA Online since its launch. In total, GTA 5 and GTA Online have generated an estimated $9.5 billion since launch. The sequel is undoubtedly designed with that same level of longevity in mind, and that means the studio will hold off on a launch until it’s certain the game will be a success. Obbe Vermeij, a former Rockstar developer, said on X that since “there is no competition to worry about,” Rockstar Games is “not going to release the game until they’re 100% happy with it.” Rockstar can learn from previous games’ mistakes Game development is a lot like making bread. You must have patience. If rushed and removed from the oven too soon, it might have a delicious-looking crust, but the inside will be unfinished and inedible. That’s happened far too many times in recent years, and the last thing Rockstar wants is a Cyberpunk 2077 situation. Sure, the game is great now, but how many updates and tweaks did CD Projekt Red have to release before it got to that point? Click here for the full 4K screenshot. / Rockstar Games The same holds true for No Man’s Sky and Fallout 76. Both were games with extremely high expectations, and both fell far short of what fans wanted. It’s not a stretch to say that Grand Theft Auto 6 is even more anticipated than either of those, so the stakes for Rockstar are significantly higher. Industry analyst Mat Piscatella said in a 2024 interview, “There’s probably never been a more important thing to ever release in the industry, so no pressure.” Grand Theft Auto 6 looks good. Really good While concrete details about the game are still few and far between, the developers have hinted that it will go beyond anything the franchise has attempted before in both terms of scope and in technical prowess. We know the game is set to feature ray-tracing and procedural generation, as well as a massive map. In fact, a post from Take-Two after the launch announcement described it as “the biggest, most immersive evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series yet.” The game will see a return to Vice City, but that might only be part of the map, and some leaks have suggested more locations could be added post-launch. The trailer shows off a slew of different locations, from the neon-soaked streets of the city itself to bridges crossing huge waterways between different islands. Considering the first game set in Vice City dropped 20 years ago, it’s no surprise that it looks better than ever. Rockstar Games I have never been the biggest fan of the Grand Theft Auto series, but GTA 6 has me excited for the chance to dive into the world and explore the full scope of it. I expect it to be groundbreaking in more ways than one, and this delay has me rethinking my gaming schedule for the fall. That said, it does allow more time to play other games, so perhaps it’s not all bad. What the delay means for the PC version of the game isn’t clear. Rockstar hasn’t made an official statement regarding a PC launch of the game, but it would be shocking (and a poor choice) for the company to ignore the PC audience. However, the company has always had an unpredictable schedule for PC ports. Many fans speculated Grand Theft Auto 6 would make its way to PC in early 2026, but with the console launch delayed until May, it’s possible the PC port could drop at the same time. Worst-case scenario, PC players might have to wait until later in 2026 to play. Source link #GTA #delay #good #game #doesnt #disappointed Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  4. Microsoft has no plans to fix Windows RDP bug that lets you log in with old passwords Microsoft has no plans to fix Windows RDP bug that lets you log in with old passwords Microsoft apparently has no plans to fix a security flaw that leaves machines vulnerable using Windows Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). In a recent report submitted to the Microsoft Security Response Center by Daniel Wade, the current configuration of Windows RDP will allow users to access machines to using old, cached passwords even if they have been updated or changed. This makes it impossible to prevent access to machines using RDP by changing the password. Old cached passwords will still allow a successful login which is a huge security concern. Despite the glaring open *********, Microsoft has insisted that this is intentional and the company has no plans to change the way this function operates as it provides a method for users to never be completely locked out of their machine. Microsoft has their own definition of what qualifies as a “security vulnerability” and claims that this does not count as a vulnerability. The feature was intentionally designed to make sure users could access a given machine through RDP even after it’s been offline for a long ******* of time. Despite the concern, the feature is not optional and cannot be disabled. Wade described the security concern has a breakdown of trust. When it comes to information security, changing a password is generally perceived as a surefire way to terminate access to a given account when they’re authenticated using any previous password. In this case, you can’t prevent access using old passwords and receive no warning that the old passwords are still valid when using RDP. This is especially concerning in situations where passwords have been publicly compromised. Because there’s no way to eliminate the RDP authorization with them, would be hackers can technically gain access to the machine with the account owner being none the wiser. Microsoft has been aware of the issue for some time, citing a previous report from August of 2023. Although the issue was investigated back then, the decision was ultimately made to not to change the way it functions out of concern for compatibility issues it could face with existing applications. 5. Kulusevski backs Spurs on *****’s artificial pitch Kulusevski backs Spurs on *****’s artificial pitch Dejan Kulusevski believes Tottenham can handle *****/Glimt’s artificial surface in the Arctic Circle and stay on track to finish a disappointing season in the best way possible. Spurs will next week head to Aspmyra Stadion in northern Norway with a two-goal advantage after they earned a 3-1 win in Thursday’s Europa League semi-final first-leg tie. A late goal from Ulrik Saltnes provided hope for *****, who will have captain Patrick Berg and Hakon Evjen back from suspension and boast a formidable home record, with Twente, Olympiacos and Lazio all defeated there in the knock-out rounds. Ange Postecoglou has taken plenty of criticism for Tottenham’s disastrous Premier League season – with the club in 16th position – but backed his squad to “get the job done” in Norway and cited their quarter-final displays against Eintracht Frankfurt as evidence of their ability. Star man Kulusevski echoed the sentiments of his under-pressure manager and talked up the prospect of ending the club’s 17-year trophy drought on May 21 in the Europa League final in Bilbao. “When you do performances like Frankfurt, you want to repeat them,” Kulusevski said. “I think in Europe, we play a little bit different. We play with less risk and we put the ball up more in the space like we did today and we got to keep doing that in Europe. “This season has been really disappointing but at least, let’s finish it in the best possible way. We have got to do everything possible every day to make it happen. “It is different football on an artificial pitch, it is a different pitch, but in life, you have to do what you have to do to find a way to win and we have got to do that.” Asked if Spurs would train on an artificial pitch before the second leg, Kulusevski said: “Yes, probably we have to do it. It is good for me. I have been playing it in Sweden so I should be prepared.” Postecoglou revealed on Friday morning that Spurs will be without midfielder Lucas Bergvall for the second leg and potentially James Maddison too. “Lucas obviously looks like the injury is significant enough to probably keep him out for the rest of the season,” Postecoglou said. “Dom (Solanke) is not too bad, still sore from last night but we don’t think it’s anything too serious. Obviously a doubt for the weekend, but we’re hoping it will settle down pretty quickly. “Madders is a bit more of a concern because it’s the knee. We’ve sent him for a scan and just waiting to hear the outcome.” Source link #Kulusevski #backs #Spurs #Bodos #artificial #pitch Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  7. What is mSATA SSD (mSATA solid-state drive)? What is mSATA SSD (mSATA solid-state drive)? An mSATA SSD is a solid-state drive that conforms to the Mini Serial Advanced Technology Attachment interface specification developed by the Serial ATA International Organization (SATA-IO). It has a smaller form factor than a standard SSD and is designed for use with portable, power-constrained devices, such as laptops and tablets. Advantages of mSATA SSDs include a small form factor, lower power consumption than a standard SSD, shock and vibration resistance, and fast boot and shutdown capabilities. The maximum bandwidth of an mSATA SSD is 6 gigabits per second (Gbps), which is equivalent to the SATA 3 standard. An mSATA SSD is much smaller than its SATA counterpart, making it ideal for notebooks’ and tablets’ limited space. How is mSATA used? The SATA interface is a standardized and low-cost way to attach storage devices to a computer’s system bus. SATA supports device hot plugging, and SATA drives can be directly controlled from the system BIOS or Unified Extensible Firmware Interface. These drives can easily fit into most desktops and even laptops and notebooks. However, they cannot fit in slimmer or smaller devices, such as ultrathin laptops and tablets. Because those devices require compact drives with a smaller form factor than standard SATA drives, the mSATA SSD form factor was developed. MSATA SSDs offer the same data transfer rates as SATA. Additionally, these devices can act as cache drives, speeding up access to frequently used data and applications. An mSATA SSD flash storage device is commonly used in commercial products, such as digital signs, point-of-***** devices, retail kiosks and multifunctional printers. It can also be found in older laptops and devices. However, mSATA SSDs are increasingly being replaced by M.2 SSDs. Examples of mSATA devices Although often replaced by M.2 SSDs as noted, mSATA SSDs can still be found in the following devices: What are mSATA features? As an internal solid-state drive designed with lightweight construction in mind, an mSATA SSD is 50.8 mm x 29.85 mm x 4.85 mm. It is roughly the size of a business card. These SSDs support all three revisions to the SATA interface specification. They are also characterized by these features: Speed. Read/write speeds can reach up to around 550 megabits per second and 520 Mbps, respectively. MSATA SSDs have a maximum bandwidth of 6 Gbps. Capacity. Storage capacity options typically range from 8 gigabytes to 512 GB, but mSATA SSDs can also range up to 1 terabyte or 2 TB, which is comparable to some newer solid-state storage devices. Reliability. MSATA SSDs provide reliable data storage and can last from 1.5 to 2 million hours. They can also be made resistant to external shocks and vibrations by adding a protective coating or case. Some mSATA drives can also include end-to-end data protection to maintain data integrity and availability. Others may include error correction codes and cyclic redundancy checks to detect errors in transmitted data. How do you test mSATA? Users can test mSATA SSDs with software tools. These tools can determine if an SSD is faulty, providing either a pass or fail result. Most health check tools can examine both sequential and random read/write speeds, power consumption, file transfer speeds and general performance. But not every test tool has these features, and not every test tool can test every SSD. So, it is best to check the testing software’s description before downloading. For example, Samsung Magician can be used to test all Samsung memory products, including SSDs, memory cards and USB flash drives. However, it may not work well with SSDs from other manufacturers. Samsung Magician — the latest version, as of April 2025, is v8.3 — works with many different operating systems. It provides an intuitive interface, drive status indicators and numerous customization features to help users test their Samsung mSATA SSDs and find opportunities to improve drive performance. Other tools are also available for testing and monitoring SSDs, including mSATA SSDs. One popular tool is the free and open source CrystalDiskInfo app. What is the difference between SATA vs. mSATA? SATA-IO started developing the mini interface connector in 2009. The mSATA specification emerged in 2011 as part of SATA revision 3.1. SATA itself has been around since 2000. Vendors that contributed to the mSATA specification include Dell EMC, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Lenovo, Samsung, Sandisk, Toshiba and sTec Inc., which was acquired in 2013 by HGST, a Western Digital company. SATA-IO initially referred to the specification as mini-SATA, later changing its name to mSATA. The mSATA specification describes how to map SATA signals onto a Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe) mini card connector to enable use with a wide range of applications. All SATA and mSATA connectors adhere to the same SATA-IO requirements, minimizing compatibility issues. Like SATA, mSATA uses the ATA command set to transfer data between a host computer and a target storage device. The main differences between an mSATA SSD and a SATA SSD are physical size and the connector. With a bulky, 2.5-inch casing, SATA drives are thicker than mSATA drives. For this reason, SATA SSDs can only be used in ******* devices. On the other hand, the smaller form factor of mSATA SSDs can be both an advantage and a limitation. Smaller devices benefit from mSATA drives. However, their small size also means that these SSDs typically offer less storage capacity than a SATA SSD. That said, they offer similar read/write speeds to SATA drives. What is the difference between M.2 SSDs vs. mSATA SSDs? Like mSATA SSDs, M.2 SSDs are also small form factor, high-performance storage devices for use with small devices, such as notebooks and tablet computers. In fact, M.2 drives are even smaller than mSATA, making them suitable for especially thin devices. M.2 SSDs are also used in client devices and, to a lesser degree, in enterprise storage systems. Many modern gaming laptops also use M.2 SSDs due to their small size. MSATA SSDs are typically available in one size, but M.2 SSDs come in various sizes to fit most small spaces. The M.2 form factor emerged in 2013, a few years after mSATA, with the goal of superseding the mSATA format. The PCI Special Interest Group consortium of technology vendors defined the M.2 specification. Some of the differences between M.2 and mSATA SSDs are the following: MSATA SSDs only use the SATA interface. M.2 SSDs also support SATA Express (SATAe), which enables SATA or PCIe connectors. The SATAe-based M.2 drive tells the host if it is PCIe or SATA. M.2 SSDs support non-volatile memory express, which can boost performance and reduce latency over devices that use the ATA or Small Computer System Interface command set. The M.2 form factor offers many different sizes, compared to mSATA SSDs, which ship in only two sizes. Half-size mSATA SSDs are 30.1 mm x 26.8 mm and provide higher read/write times than mSATA. An M.2 SSD is faster, as it can extend the data rate beyond the 6 Gbps limitation of an mSATA SSD. A PCIe-based M.2 SSD can support up to four lanes of PCIe, with a theoretical transfer rate of up to 20 Gbps. M.2 drives typically have higher storage capacities than mSATA drives. What is the difference between mSATA vs. mini PCIe? An mSATA SSD is similar in size and appearance to a mini PCIe card, and both can physically fit into the same mPCIe slot on the motherboard. But their similar size and form factor can cause some confusion. MPCIe cards can be used to connect wireless adapters, solid-state device storage and other performance boosters for laptops and mobile devices. PCIe is a point-to-point technology in which each serial link has a full-duplex pair of differential signals, known as a lane. PCIe supports up to 32 lanes, but mPCIe supports only one. MPCIe uses PCIe signals for desktop expansion cards, while mSATA uses the SATA storage interface for SSDs. MSATA SSDs also use the SATA storage bus interface and must have a direct connection to the SATA host controller. Meanwhile, mPCIe cards support PCIe and USB signals. Solid-state storage comes in a variety of form factors, including (left to right) mSATA SSD, M.2 SSD (double-sided), M.2 SSD (single-sided) and 2.5-inch SATA SSD. Even though an mSATA card can be slotted into an mPCIe slot, they are not compatible devices. They do not work properly if switched because of each use’s different connection protocols. But using a SATA host controller can make some mSATA cards compatible with mPCIe slots. Explore our flash memory guide to architecture, types and products. The excitement has been high for the next Grand Theft Auto game, as it’s been more than a decade since the last release. Everyone wants to dive into the ******** world of Rockstar, but they do have a good point about the delay. The gaming market has been in a rush to release the next big thing, and sometimes it rushes the process. It might sound old school, but there was a time when games were released in a polished manner, rather than depending on online updates. Rockstar is simply keeping that respect towards its fans, so that they get the best hands-on experience on release. Maybe this one single delay can turn out to be the biggest life-changing decision for Rockstar altogether. Rockstar delays the release of GTA 6 to May 2026, since the stakes are higher Rockstar delays GTA 6 for good. | Image Credit: Rockstar Games GTA 6 has been in development for a long time, and fans are still wondering what is taking so long. People got their first look at the sequel back in December 2023. Almost one year later, fans still wait for another peek at the game to satisfy their excitement. While other development studios reveal snippets for their own IPs here and there, Rockstar likes to do it the traditional way. Keeping the hype up by keeping it a mystery altogether. There have been leaks surrounding the game, but it is only from developer builds. Grand Theft Auto VI is now set to release on May 26, 2026. pic.twitter.com/cyeK7GM6Ob — Rockstar Games (@RockstarGames) May 2, 2025 Fans want to observe what has changed, what’s new, and what they could do next. GTA 5 had a lot to do, which has raised the bar for the gaming industry altogether and for themselves. Being the pioneer for groundbreaking games throughout history, Rockstar wishes to do the same with their next title. Good things take time, and patience has to be there. If the developers folded to consumers’ demand for release, it could lead to a disaster. Something that many gamers forget, Cyberpunk 2077 took a long time to recover after its disastrous release. Rockstar surely doesn’t want the CD Projekt Red’s situation repeated for their end. Comment byu/ToppleToes from discussion inGTA6 Rockstar stated the main reason why it is taking so long in their official statement for the delay. They’ve considered fan excitement towards the game, and they feel happy about it. But they don’t want to let down fans after all this hype. They quoted this in the statement: With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve. Initially, the plan was to release GTA 6 in Fall 2025, which is around October. Having it delayed by a few months isn’t that big of a deal. It is only for the benefit of the players and the company itself. Or is it about raising the game price to 80 USD, who knows? Fan reaction to GTA 6 release, they are losing their mind It’s pretty much known, Rockstar has one of the greatest fan bases with some spoiled carrots. Some think that GTA 6 has been in development for 13 years, since GTA 5 was first released in 2013. But Rockstar isn’t only making Grand Theft Auto games, they have other IPs. 13 years to make a single video game is ******** insane — King Prez (@itsPrez) May 2, 2025 It is wrong for fans to think Rockstar is only a Grand Theft Auto-making studio. Additionally, the development of the GTA sequel only began after the release of Red Dead Redemption 2. No one would be happy if it were just like GTA 5 with some graphic tweaks and minor feature additions. Let Rockstar cook. Please don’t be woke Please don’t be woke — Eric Yeah (@EricYeah612) May 2, 2025 Some fans are worried about GTA 6 going woke due to certain trends in the industry, and after seeing women characters. The United States Attorney in New Mexico announced Thursday that 82 people are facing brand new criminal charges aimed at cracking down on ******** crossings where Mexico shares a border with New Mexico. A recent land transfer from the Department of Interior to the Department of Defense effectively made the 170-mile stretch of United States-Mexico border in southwest New Mexico into a military base, authorizing federal troops to detain and transfer individuals to federal law enforcement for criminal charges, according to a news release. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth arrives to review operations at the U.S.-Mexico border in Sunland Park, New Mexico, on Feb. 3, 2025. Those who are arrested in the 60-foot buffer zone can face charges for “unauthorized entry into the New Mexico National Defense Areas,” according to charging documents, a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in prison. The names of the 82 individuals charged were not immediately available, though federal court records show that U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison, who was named as the United States Attorney for New Mexico on April 18, personally signed 28 charging documents for named defendants on April 28. “The Department of Justice will work hand in glove with the Department of Defense and Border Patrol to gain 100% operational control of New Mexico’s 170-mile border with Mexico,” Ellison said in a news release. “Trespassers into the National Defense Area will be Federally prosecuted—no exceptions.” United States Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Border Patrol Chief Michael Banks joined Ellison for a “high-level visit” April 25. They touted the newly created criminal charge as a way to leverage “expanded military and prosecutorial authority to deter unlawful border crossings,” according to the news release. Standing on the newly created National Defense Area in New Mexico on April 25, Hegseth warned that anyone caught there would be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. If you try to come in illegally as a cartel, or you try to smuggle or traffic. You will be detained by a member the U.S. military, and you will be handed over to US Customs and Border Patrol, and then you will be prosecuted by the US DOJ, and then you will be charged to the maximum extent of the law,” Hegseth said, according to video he posted to social media. The buffer zone along the U.S.-Mexico border in New Mexico, Arizona and California is known as the “Roosevelt Reservation” and excludes areas of private or tribal land. Now that it’s under control of the Defense Department, it’s treated as an extension of the U.S. Army Garrison Fort Huachaca in Cochise County, Arizona. Rebecca Sheff, an attorney with the ACLU of New Mexico, said in an April 22 news release statement that the newly created military buffer zone “represents a dangerous erosion of the constitutional principle that the military should not be policing civilians.” She also said U.S. citizens who live near the border could be prosecuted under the newly created statutes. 17. Is it a good time to move to Macs from Windows? Is it a good time to move to Macs from Windows? Q: I’m a Gen X Windows user, I’ve been building my own systems for decades, and I work mainly in 3D design for the building and construction industry. I would like to know if you feel switching to Mac makes sense with all this unnecessary tariff turmoil? I’ve been trying to make the leap for years … I feel like I need someone to just tell me to go for it and not look back. — Jim from Bainbridge Island, Washington A: It’s undoubtedly a great time to make the jump from Windows to Macs. The MacBook Air and MacBook Pro are among the highest-rated laptops we’ve reviewed over the last few years, and the Mac mini and iMac are also fantastic solutions for desktop users. There’s certainly a bit of a learning curve when jumping platforms, but it’s mostly just a problem if you require specialized software that only runs on Windows. Devindra Hardawar for Engadget What are the benefits of moving from Windows to Mac? There are three big advantages from switching from Windows to Mac. Speed At the moment, the biggest advantage is the sheer speed of Macs. That’s entirely thanks to Apple Silicon, the company’s custom chips that are built to be efficient and very fast. In our benchmarks, even the most basic M4 chip blows away most of the hardware from Intel and AMD. Apple’s advantage only grows as you move up to its Pro, Max and Ultra chips. Apple Silicon’s speed doesn’t just show up in benchmarks. It’s easy to see that modern Macs, even the entry-level MacBook Air, feel zippier than comparably-priced Windows PCs. That goes for everything including web browsing and office productivity apps, as well as more complex tasks like rendering video. Apple’s chips also include some powerful graphics cores, giving you the ability to easily run many games from the App Store. While you certainly wouldn’t mistake any Mac as a true gaming PC, I was still surprised that the MacBook Air was able to run a complex new game like Lies of P in 1080p at 60 fps. Battery life Since Apple Silicon is based on Arm’s mobile chip architecture, it’s also a lot more efficient than Intel and AMD’s more demanding CPUs. That leads to killer battery life across the board for Mac laptops. Both the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air lasted well over 18 hours in our video benchmark, while the MacBook Pros went beyond 30 hours. In real-world usage, you can expect most Macs to last two full work days without needing a charge. Macs also tend to hold their charge in standby mode far better than PCs, so you can have a bit more faith that they’ll be ready to work the instant you turn them on. Durability After reviewing Macs for the last 15 years, and supporting them as an IT worker for a decade before that, I can also confidently say that Mac hardware lasts longer than PCs. Apple’s aluminum cases withstand bumps and drops far better than the cheap plastic you’ll find on some PCs. Now that’s not to say they’re immune to wear and tear, but from what I’ve seen Macs just tend to hold up well. If you do need to get something fixed, it’s also relatively easy to get that done at an Apple Store, instead of shipping a Windows PC off to its maker. Photo by Devindra Hardawar/Engadget What are the downsides of switching from Windows to Macs? While I think it’s worth making the jump to Macs overall, there are a few downsides: Windows to Mac learning curve Given how much of our computing lives revolve around cloud apps like Gmail and Google Docs these days, moving to Macs mainly involves learning the basics of Apple’s platforms. Installing software outside of the App Store works a bit differently than Windows — you often have to drag an app to the Applications folder, instead of clicking through an installer. Apple’s trackpads also don’t support right-clicking by default. Instead, you either have to hold down the Control key and click, or enable a Secondary Click feature (System Preferences > Trackpad). There you can assign right-clicks to a two-finger tap, or a tap on the bottom corners of the trackpad. The macOS Dock can be confusing since it can’t show all of your open apps like the Windows taskbar can. Subsequently, managing all of your open apps can be a pain. My suggestion? Set up Hot Corners (System Settings > Desktop and Dock > Hot Corners) so that your Mac will reveal your apps whenever you drag your pointer to a corner of your screen. Since that feature debuted (it was originally called Expose), I’ve set it up to reveal current app windows in one corner, all of my windows in another, and the desktop in a third. Apple’s Stage Manager, which debuted in macOS Ventura, can also help you wrangle apps, but I typically only use that when I want to focus on one or two programs. Lackluster gaming library, limited upgrade options Apple has historically been terrible when it comes to supporting games on macOS, but it’s getting better. Recent titles like the aforementioned Lies of P, as well as Resident Evil Village and Death Stranding, are readily available on the app store. There are also more titles on Steam shipping with dedicated Mac support, and cloud streaming opens up access to services like Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass library. But there’s no way Apple will be able to catch up with Windows when it comes to overall gaming support anytime soon. So if you actually care about always getting the latest titles, you might want to stick with PCs. That’s doubly true if you also have any interest in ever wanting to upgrade video cards, RAM or internal storage options, all of which aren’t really accessible on Macs — including desktop models. No touchscreen support While Apple pioneered the use of touchscreens with the iPhone and iPad, it’s stubbornly refused to bring that feature over to Macs. So if you’re used to casually flicking a laptop’s screen to scroll, you’re just out of luck with Macs… for now. A 2023 report claimed that we may see a touchscreen MacBook Pro this year, but it’s unclear if that will actually happen. Personally, I don’t miss having a touchscreen when I use Macs, since Apple’s glass touchpads feel just as fluid. Devindra Hardawar/Engadget A brief history of Mac vs. Windows The battle between Mac and Windows is nearly as old as the concept of personal computing itself, and it will likely never end. In 1983, Apple’s Lisa broke new ground as the first consumer computer with a graphical user interface (GUI), and the company followed that up with the more affordable Macintosh in 1984. Microsoft countered with Windows 1.0 in 1985, but the platform didn’t really take off until Windows 3.0 arrived in 1990. By that point, the philosophical differences between the two companies was clear: Apple was more focused on delivering friendly user experiences for its custom hardware, while Microsoft built up Windows as a platform that could run on a wide variety of computers. Consequently, the user culture around both platforms became fairly distinct: Macs became the go-to choice for anyone working in creative fields and academia, whereas Windows was more focused on office work and straightforward productivity. There’s also always been a major price difference between the platforms, as Apple’s custom hardware has typically cost far more than your basic Windows PC. Over the years, Apple has gone from using Motorola’s PowerPC chips to Intel’s — a move that brought Macs far closer to Windows PCs. And most recently, Apple completely changed things up again by moving entirely to its own Apple Silicon chips, which are built around the same mobile architecture used by iPhones and iPads. While Macs and Windows remain very distinct, the differences between them have flattened a bit now that we’re relying on so many cloud services. Using Gmail or Google Docs on a Mac is no different than on a Windows system, after all. Which Mac is best for you? It may sound cliche to say this, but Apple’s Mac family now has something for everyone (unless you’re a hardcore gamer). We’re four generations deep into Apple Silicon chips, and all of the company’s hardware has seen some helpful impressive revisions. The real question is figuring out which Mac is best for you. A note on pricing: While Apple’s entry-level prices are more reasonable than ever before, they do skyrocket as you add more RAM and storage. You also can’t add more memory or storage to Apple Silicon systems down the line, so you’ll have to think hard about what you need when you buy a new Mac. I’d recommend prioritizing more RAM when possible, as you could always use cloud services or external drives for storage beyond your SSD. I’d also suggest snagging a new Mac soon if you’re interested, as there’s a chance Apple could start increasing prices to keep up with tariffs. (Just recently, both Microsoft and DJI have increased prices for aging devices.) But if you’re finally ready to pull the trigger on a new Mac, these are your best options right now. You can also find some excellent deals if you look for refurbished M3 and M2 versions of the systems below. The MacBook Air is the best ultraportable laptop available today. It’s fast, incredibly light, has great battery life and is also completely silent, since it has no cooling fan. Now that it starts at $999 with 16GB of RAM, it’s also a surprisingly good deal. Unless you need the additional ports and improved screen on the MacBook Pro, the Air will be all the computer you need for several years. Stepping up to the MacBook Pro gets you a high refresh rate screen, faster M4 Pro chips and a wide variety of ports (including more USB-C connections, a microSD card reader and HDMI). While it’s heavier than the Air, the 14-inch MacBook Pro is still relatively light and is better-suited to sustained workloads, like video encoding or 3D rendering. The 16-inch MacBook Pro is pretty much the same machine with a larger screen. Starting at $599 (but often on ***** for much less), the Mac mini is a powerful-yet-tiny box that can outmatch full-sized Windows desktops. It’s the ideal gateway to the world of Macs if you already have a monitor, keyboard and mouse you like. The base model is powerful enough to handle any productivity task you throw at it, but if you need more performance you can also step up to the M4 Pro-equipped Mac mini. In addition to shrinking it down for this latest revision, Apple also seems to have heard my complaints and added two USB-C ports to the front of the Mac mini. Together with three more USB-C ports on the rear, HDMI and Ethernet, the Mac mini serves up a comprehensive array of ports and it’s hard to think of a more capable $600 PC. While the iMac isn’t the first all-in-one desktop computer, it’s popularized the form factor to the point where most PC makers have their own copycat products. Now with an M4 chip, the iMac is more powerful than ever, while also sporting a thin profile that means it fits right at home on a kitchen table. Its 24-inch screen is just right for getting a bit of work done without dominating a table, and its speakers also sound surprisingly great. The iMac is the ideal family computer, one that can be set up just about anywhere and be useful for kids and parents alike. If you need more power than the Mac mini, the Mac Studio is a powerhouse of a desktop. While it’s still far smaller than a typical Windows desktop, its M4 Max and M4 Ultra chips can easily take on the best hardware from Intel and AMD. At this point, the Mac Studio is more of a Mac for professionals than the actual Mac Pro, which is far more expensive and more meant for high-level corporate work. 19. Nvidia’s RTX Pro 6000 Blackwell 96GB graphics card benchmarked, specs allegedly confirmed Nvidia’s RTX Pro 6000 Blackwell 96GB graphics card benchmarked, specs allegedly confirmed Nvidia has yet to officially reveal Blackwell-based graphics boards for professional visualization (ProViz) applications, but such cards are already undergoing testing in the wild by interested parties in Geekbench. An OpenCL benchmark result of Nvidia’s upcoming RTX Pro 6000 Blackwell Workstation Edition graphics card has emerged, confirming rumored specifications of the GPU and memory while raising questions about performance. Nvidia’s RTX Pro 6000 Blackwell Workstation Edition add-in-board is based on the GB202 graphics processing unit (GPU) with 24,064 CUDA cores (188 streaming multiprocessors, 128 CUDA cores) allegedly operating at up to 2,617 MHz and carries 96 GB of memory with ECC, according to the Geekbench listing. By contrast, Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 5090 — the best graphics card for gaming money can buy these days — features the GB202 GPU with 21,760 CUDA cores operating at up to 2,410 MHz and carries 32 GB of GDDR7 memory. At first glance, the new RTX Pro 6000 Blackwell Workstation Edition graphics board should easily beat its gaming counterpart, but this is not the case as the unit scores 368,219 points in GB6 6.4.0 OpenCL benchmark, whereas the GeForce RTX 5090 can score around 376,858 in the same benchmark. A 2.3% performance difference is hardly a big deal, but given significant hardware differences between the boards, it is natural to expect the new ProViz card to beat the gaming board. First up, we are dealing with a pre-release product with pre-release drivers, so the performance of the RTX Pro 6000 Blackwell Workstation Edition can improve when it is launched with final drivers. Secondly, the TGP of the RTX Pro 6000 Blackwell WE can be capped, and therefore its compute performance is lower than that of the GeForce RTX 5090, which can go all the way to 575W. Thirdly, the current driver limits memory visible to OpenCL applications to 24 GB (well, 23.8 GB, according to the detailed GB6 results) even though the unit carries 96 GB onboard. This proves that the driver is not final. Also, it should be noted that based on a previous report, this the RTX Pro 6000 Blackwell is not Nvidia’s flagship ProViz offering, as the range-topping model is expected to be called the RTX Pro 6000 X Blackwell. 20. Block plunges 20% as Cash App miss triggers downgrades Block plunges 20% as Cash App miss triggers downgrades Block shares were on track for their second-worst day Friday, plunging more than 20% as investors digested a brutal quarterly report and a wave of analyst downgrades centered on one issue: Cash App. The first-quarter earnings miss rattled Wall Street, prompting multiple firms — including Wells Fargo, Seaport, BMO, and Benchmark — to downgrade the stock overnight. Many flagged fresh concerns around stagnant Cash App user growth, muted consumer demand, and a soft macro environment that may weigh on monetization. “Stagnation in the number of active users of the app is even more concerning than users’ reduced spending,” Benchmark wrote in its note, downgrading Block to Hold. The financial services company missed across the board — on revenue, gross profit, and payment volume — and slashed its full-year guidance, citing macro uncertainty, weaker consumer spending, and lower-than-expected inflows during what’s typically a strong tax refund season. “I just don’t think we were focused enough and had enough attention on the network and the network density, and that is our foundation,” CEO Jack Dorsey said on the earnings call. “We of course want to deepen engagement with our customers through banking services and Borrow, and I have no doubt we will … but at the same time, we need to make sure that we continuously grow our network, and that starts with peer to peer.” Cash App generated $1.38 billion in gross profit in the first quarter, up 10% from a year earlier, but shy of the $1.42 billion StreetAccount consensus. Monthly actives remained flat at 57 million — and inflows rose just 8%, despite new features like Afterpay on the Cash Card and broader efforts to position Cash App as a full-fledged banking alternative. Stock Chart IconStock chart icon Block 5 day stock chart Wells Fargo called out “numerous Cash App monetization red flags,” while Seaport pointed to several consecutive quarters of negative GPV growth. Even Morgan Stanley, which reiterated its Overweight rating, called the Cash App miss “surprising” — though it highlighted better-than-expected momentum in the Square seller business, particularly in international markets. BMO downgraded the stock to Market Perform. Wells Fargo said it’s unwilling to “lay out for the second half Hail Mary,” moving to Equal Weight. Seaport downgraded to Neutral, writing: “Will the real Jack Dorsey please stand up?” Still, some maintained optimism, with Bank of America reiterating its Buy rating, calling the stock undervalued, and Morgan Stanley saying it was an attractive near-term entry point. Block’s turnaround plan hinges on lending. The company says Cash App Borrow — now approved by the FDIC to originate loans through its bank subsidiary — will double the number of eligible users and improve margins by bringing servicing in-house. Marketing spend is also expected to jump 50% in Q2 as Block looks to reaccelerate growth in the back half of the year. “We are not sufficiently confident in the likelihood of such a rebound to recommend buying the stock on weakness,” Benchmark wrote. Meanwhile, rival Venmo is showing signs of momentum. Parent company PayPal reported a 20% revenue jump for the app in Q1, driven by increased adoption of Venmo’s debit card, instant transfers, and growing volume at checkout. While PayPal didn’t disclose an exact revenue figure for Venmo, it said monetization per user is improving — the result of a clear push to embed Venmo deeper into e-commerce flows. Two very different strategies are now unfolding: Cash App is leaning deeper into lending and banking, while Venmo is chasing spend at checkout. But the goal, however, is the same: Owning the consumer’s wallet. Right now, Venmo appears to be gaining ground, while Cash App is regrouping. This will apply to physical and digital versions. Xbox also confirms that existing releases will not see a price change. These software price adjustments are the first to follow Nintendo’s $80 pricing for its upcoming Mario Kart World. As of now, there are no confirmed Xbox first-party releases for the holiday season. We’ll likely find out which games will be the first to receive this updated pricing during the Xbox Games Showcase on June 8. Microsoft comments on why it’s making these changes in the post, saying, “We understand that these changes are challenging, and they were made with careful consideration given market conditions and the rising cost of development. Looking ahead, we continue to focus on offering more ways to play more games across any screen and ensuring value for Xbox players.” Xbox’s price adjustments are the latest in a series of price increases for hardware and software across the industry due to current economic conditions (caused at least partially by the United States tariffs). Earlier this month, Sony raised prices for the PlayStation 5 console family in Europe and other non-US territories, citing “a challenging economic environment, including high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates.” Nintendo fans have also felt sticker shock at the Switch 2’s $449/$499 pricing. Nintendo delayed the US pre-order date for the Switch 2 in response to a round of US tariffs before announcing price increases for Switch 2 accessories. What do you make of Xbox’s price adjustments? 22. NASA’s Psyche Mission Encounters Pressure Drop, Backup Systems on Standby NASA’s Psyche Mission Encounters Pressure Drop, Backup Systems on Standby The Psyche mission by NASA has gained a small success in its journey to the asteroid belt. Spacecraft used solar electric propulsion to pass through into space easily. This led to a decrease in fuel pressure. The scientists are finding the reason behind this issue to make sure the mission stays as it was planned. Xenon gas is used in the propulsion to eject the electric thrusters. This in turn allows Psyche to move into space efficiently at far distances. Unexpected Pressure Drop Halts Thruster Firing As per physics.org, it was studied that Psyche detected a sudden decrease in the pressure of xenon gas, which dropped from 36 psi to 26 psi, on April 1, 2025. According to its programming by NASA, the spacecraft shut down the thrusters automatically to avoid any risk. Spacecraft design allows it to handle the anomalies safely with precautions. Scientists are analysing the data driven by telemetry, to understand the reason behind this pressure drop. Backup Systems Ready if Needed The design of the spacecraft has been designed redundantly. Psyche has two identical fuel lines, and the team can access backup when needed. The team has put all the activities at halt till the examination of the system. This limited ******* hiatus of the mission allowed the spacecraft’s planned course of action till the middle of June at least. This buffer will allow the researchers enough time to detect the issue with no impact on the mission. Mission Progress Remains on Track The spacecraft is at a distance of around 238 million kms away from the Earth. After the launch of the spacecraft from Kennedy Space Center in October 2023, thruster operations began in May 2024. There is a flexibility in the design to carry out the mission with ease, after knowing the minor changes or hanging on that is required to do during this long expedition to the asteroid belt. Next Steps: A Mars Flyby and Beyond Further, Psyche will be on track for a Mars flyby in 2026. 25. See a Wafer-Thin Crescent Moon Leapfrog Jupiter in the Post-Sunset Sky This Week See a Wafer-Thin Crescent Moon Leapfrog Jupiter in the Post-Sunset Sky This Week A striking celestial event will occur this week as a delicate crescent moon approaches Jupiter in the post-sunset sky. On the night of April 29, skywatchers will observe the moon appear as a thin arc, illuminated only at its lower right edge, while the bright planet Jupiter glows above it in the constellation Taurus. By the evening of April 30, the crescent will “leapfrog” the gas giant, positioning itself to Jupiter’s upper right, offering a brief yet spectacular skywatching moment before both slip beneath the horizon. Crescent Moon Makes Closest Approach to Jupiter on April 30, Visible After Sunset As per a report from in-the-sky.org, the moon will make its closest apparent approach to Jupiter on April 30 at 12:54 p.m. EDT (1654 GMT), though the duo will remain visible in the twilight sky after sunset. Just over five degrees will separate the pair, while Mars shines higher in the southwestern sky and the bright star Elnath—forming one of Taurus’ horns—will appear near the moon’s darkened edge, separated by less than a degree. This lunar-Jovian pairing follows the moon’s emergence from its April 27 new moon phase, when it passed between the sun and Earth. The moon now enters a waxing crescent phase that leads to its first quarter on May 4. On April 29, only a small fraction of its surface will be sunlit, with Earthshine potentially lighting up the shadowed regions, revealing ancient mare formations of basalt rock from a time when the moon’s surface was still cooling. Catch the Crescent Moon and Jupiter Together in the Twilight Sky Until Late April 30 Observers in cities like New York can catch the pair until around 10:30 p.m. EDT, when the moon sets. The event promises fleeting beauty, ideal for astrophotography or telescope viewing. Jupiter will gradually set earlier each night in May, while the moon sets later as it approaches the first quarter. Whether with the naked eye or assisted by optics, this twilight event offers a serene moment to witness Earth’s closest neighbour share the sky with a gas giant, backdropped by the stars of Taurus.
