CoreWeave, the provider of data center technology and services for artificial intelligence companies, has signed a five-year deal with OpenAI valued at $11.9 billion, according to two people with knowledge of the matter.
As part of the deal, OpenAI will receive a stake in CoreWeave worth about $350 million tied to the company’s upcoming IPO, according to the people, who asked not to be named because the information is confidential.
Reuters was first to report on the agreement.
CoreWeave, which is backed by AI chipmaker Nvidia, is set to debut on the Nasdaq in the coming weeks. The company said in its IPO prospectus last week that revenue in 2024 soared more than 700% to $1.92 billion, with more than 60% coming from Microsoft, the core investor in OpenAI.
In October, CoreWeave announced a $650 million credit line to expand its business and data center portfolio. During the past two years, the company has raised more than $12 billion from equity and debt investors, including a $1.1 billion round in May at a $19 billion valuation.
CoreWeave said in its prospectus that it finished 2024 with 32 data centers, which housed over 250,000 Nvidia graphics processing units (GPUs). That surpassed the company’s announced goals in October, when CoreWeave said it planned to have 28 data centers open by the end of the year, with 10 more planned for 2025.
In addition to supplying AI computing services to Microsoft, CoreWeave’s customer base also includes Meta, IBM and Cohere.
CoreWeave was valued at $19 billion in a funding round in May. Reuters reported in November that the company was targeting a valuation of over $35 billion in its IPO.

Okami sequel doesn’t mean Clovers won’t work on original IPs
Okami sequel doesn’t mean Clovers won’t work on original IPs
While Okami’s sequel is the first project the newly-founded Clovers Studio is working on, both Hideki Kamiya and Kento Koyama are quick to deny that it’s only going to work on existing IPs. Basically, it’s just interested in making interesting games.
Speaking with GameSpark (via VGC), studio figureheads Kamiya and Koyama were asked about the relationship between Clovers and existing IPs. Koyama states it isn’t looking at restricting games created, thus while it could mean the studio is making a sequel or a spiritual successor, it’s also possible that it will work on original IPs, too.
Kamiya put a stronger emphasis that Clovers isn’t gunning to specialize in sequels and spiritual successors, it just wants to make interesting games.
“If we were asked to make a game that uses an existing IP, and if it looked like it would be interesting to ‘Cloverize’ it in our own way, then we would do it.
But of course, if we get a project proposal that we really want to work on, and the desire to go it grows, then we’ll do an original work too. So I think it’s appropriate to say we won’t close off any possibilities – in the end, it all comes down to whether or not we get a ‘wow’ feeling from it.”
At this time, the much-anticipated Okami sequel is the studio’s only project with no solid release window.

Do tariffs protect U.S. jobs and industry? Economists say no
Do tariffs protect U.S. jobs and industry? Economists say no

President Donald Trump has spoken of tariffs as a job-creating behemoth.
Tariffs will “create jobs like we have never seen before,” Trump said Tuesday during a joint session of Congress.
Economists disagree.
In fact, the tariff policies Trump has pursued since taking office would likely have the opposite effect, they said.
“It costs American jobs,” said Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody’s.
He categorized tariffs imposed broadly as a “lose-lose.”
“There are no winners here in the trade war we’re seemingly being engulfed in,” Zandi said.
A barrage of tariffs
The Trump administration has announced a barrage of tariffs since Inauguration Day.
Trump has imposed an additional duty of 20% on all imports from China. He put 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico, the U.S.’ two biggest trade partners. (Just days after those took effect, the president delayed levies on some products for a month.)
Tariffs of 25% on steel and aluminum are set to take effect Wednesday, while duties on copper and lumber and reciprocal tariffs on all U.S. trade partners could be coming in the not-too-distant future.
There’s a deceptively simple logic to the protective power of such economic policy.
Tariffs generally aim to help U.S. companies compete more effectively with foreign competitors, by making it more expensive for companies to source products from overseas. U.S. products look more favorable, thereby lending support to domestic industry and jobs.

There’s some evidence of such benefits for targeted industries.
For example, steel tariffs during Trump’s first term reduced imports of steel from other nations by 24%, on average, over 2018 to 2021, according to a 2023 report by the U.S. International Trade Commission. They also raised U.S. steel prices and domestic production by about 2% each, the report said.
New steel tariffs set to take effect March 12 would also “likely boost” steel prices, Shannon O’Neil and Julia Huesa, researchers at the Council on Foreign Relations, wrote in February.
Higher prices would likely benefit U.S. producers and add jobs to the steel industry’s current headcount, around 140,000, they said.
Tariffs have ‘collateral damage’
While tariffs’ protection may “relieve” struggling U.S. industries, it comes with a cost, Lydia Cox, an assistant economics professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and international trade expert, wrote in a 2022 paper.
Tariffs create higher input costs for other industries, making them “vulnerable” to foreign competition, Cox wrote.
These spillover effects hurt other sectors of the economy, ultimately costing jobs, economists said.
Take steel, for example.
Steel tariffs raise production costs for the manufacturing sector and other steel-intensive U.S. industries, like automobiles, farming machinery, household appliances, construction and oil drilling, O’Neil and Huesa wrote.
Cox studied the effects of steel tariffs imposed by former president George W. Bush in 2002-03, and found they were responsible for 168,000 fewer jobs per year in steel-using industries, on average — more jobs than there are in the entire steel sector.
Tariffs are a “pretty blunt instrument,” said Cox during a recent webinar for the Harvard Kennedy School.
They create “a lot of collateral damage,” she added.
Why tariffs are a ‘tax on exports’

Such damage includes retaliatory tariffs imposed by other nations, which make it pricier for U.S.-based exporters to sell their goods abroad, economists said.
Tariffs imposed during Trump’s first-term — on products like washing machines, steel and aluminum — hit $290 billion of U.S. imports with an average 24% tariff by August 2019, according to a 2020 paper published by the U.S. Federal Reserve. Those levies ultimately translated to a 2% tariff on all U.S. exports after accounting for foreign retaliation, it found.
“A tax on imports is effectively a tax on exports,” Erica York, senior economist at the Tax Foundation, wrote last year for the Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank.
More from Personal Finance: Medicaid cuts may include work requirements DOGE layoffs may ‘overwhelm’ unemployment system Who benefits from Trump tax cuts?
Damage to the U.S. economy from those first-term Trump tariffs “clearly” amounted to “many times” more than the wages of newly created jobs, economists Larry Summers, former Treasury secretary during the Clinton administration, and Phil Gramm, a former U.S. senator (R-Texas), wrote in a recent Wall Street Journal op-ed.
(President Joe Biden kept most of Trump’s tariffs in place.)
U.S. trade partners have already begun fighting back against Trump’s recent tranche of tariffs.
China put tariffs of up to 15% on many U.S. agricultural goods — which are the largest U.S. exports to China — starting Monday. Canada also put $21 billion of retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods like orange juice, peanut butter, coffee, appliances, footwear, cosmetics, motorcycles and paper products.
President Trump alluded to the potential economic pain of his tariff policies during his address to Congress.
“There will be a little disturbance, but we are okay with that,” he said. “It won’t be much.”
While many economists don’t yet forecast a U.S. recession, Trump in a Fox News interview on Sunday didn’t rule out the possibility of a downturn as tariffs take effect — though he said the economy would benefit in the long term. If a recession were to happen, it would weigh on protected sectors, too, economists said.
Voters elected President Trump with a mandate to institute an economic agenda that includes tariffs, Kush Desai, a spokesperson for the White House, said in an e-mailed statement.
“Tariffs played a key role in the industrial ascent of the United States stretching back to the 1800s through William McKinley’s presidency,” Desai said.
‘Disappointing results’ of Trump-era tariff policies
There is a historical precedent for the trade war that’s breaking out: The Smoot-Hawley Tariff of 1930, which triggered a reduction in exports and failed to boost agricultural prices for the farmers it sought to protect, Michael Strain, director of economic policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank, wrote in a 2024 paper.
Economists also believe the Smoot-Hawley tariff exacerbated the Great Depression.
While a nearly century-old economic policy doesn’t necessarily point to what will happen in the modern era, protectionist policies from the post-2017 years have — like Smoot-Hawley — “had disappointing results,” Strain wrote.
Evidence from recent years suggests protectionism may actually hurt the workers it seeks to help, Strain said.
For example, Trump’s first-term tariffs reduced total manufacturing employment by a net 2.7%, Aaron Flaaen and Justin Pierce, economists at the Federal Reserve Board, wrote in 2024. That’s after accounting for a 0.4% boost to employment in manufacturing jobs protected by tariffs, they found.
The 2018-19 trade war “failed to revive domestic manufacturing” and actually reduced jobs in the broad manufacturing sector, Strain wrote.
The share of U.S. employment coming from manufacturing jobs has been falling since the end of World War II, largely because technological advances have increased workers’ productivity, Strain said. It would be more helpful to direct economic policy toward connecting workers to jobs of the future, he said.
“Trade — like technological advances — is disruptive, but attempts to entomb the U.S. economy in amber are not a helpful response,” he wrote.

Man United players overpaid and not good enough: owner
Man United players overpaid and not good enough: owner
Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the co-owner of faltering English Premier League club Manchester United, has criticised some of the club’s players as “not good enough” adding “some probably are overpaid”.
The British billionaire, who took charge of footballing operations at United in February last year, referenced Rasmus Hojlund, Andre Onana and Casemiro, plus Jadon Sancho and Antony, who are both on loan, as he spoke about “players we are buying this summer, that we didn’t buy” in an interview with the BBC.
Ratcliffe said: “These are all things from the past, whether we like it or not, we’ve inherited those things and have to sort that out.
“For Sancho, who now plays for Chelsea and we pay half his wages, we’re paying Stg 17million ($A35m) to buy him in the summer.”
Asked if he was suggesting those players were not good enough for United, Ratcliffe said: “Some are not good enough and some probably are overpaid, but for us to mould the squad that we are fully responsible for, and accountable for, will take time.”
After United – currently 14th in the Premier League – finished eighth last season and won the FA Cup, they opted to stick with boss Erik ten Hag.
The Dutchman was subsequently sacked in October, being replaced by Ruben Amorim. Ratcliffe, chairman of petrochemicals giant Ineos, accepted the decision to keep Ten Hag on was a mistake – and that the same applied to hiring Dan Ashworth as sporting director, a role he left in December.
“I agree the Erik ten Tag and Dan Ashworth decisions were errors,” Ratcliffe said.
“I think there were some mitigating circumstances, but ultimately they were errors. I accept that and I apologise for that.”

********* police identify remains of murdered Indigenous woman at landfill
********* police have identified the remains of a murdered Indigenous woman at a landfill and found more remains from another person, after a months-long search demanded by the families of victims targeted by a serial killer.
Police said in a statement they had confirmed that human remains found in the Prairie Green Landfill, north of Winnipeg, had been identified as those of Morgan Harris, who was 39.
“Her family has been notified and the Manitoba government continues to ask that the family’s privacy be respected,” the statement said.
Harris was one of four women killed in 2022 by Jeremy Skibicki, who was given a life sentence in July 2024 after he was found guilty of first-degree *******.
Skibicki, 37, had admitted to killing Harris, Rebecca Contois, Marcedes Myran and an unidentified woman, who was named Mashkode Bizhiki’ikwe (Buffalo Woman) by Indigenous leaders.
Police said Harris’s remains were “one of two sets recovered in the search” but did not provide an identification for the second person.
The murders were first uncovered in 2022 when the remains of Contois were found in a dumpster near Skibicki’s home. Both Harris and Myran were believed to have been buried in the privately owned Prairie Green landfill, while few details have been released about Mashkode Bizhiki’ikwe.
Police initially said that they did not have the resources to search the refuse at the facility, much of which was buried under tonnes of clay.
After the victims’ families and Indigenous groups in Winnipeg led marches and road blockades to pressure officials to approve a search, authorities pledged C$20m ($14.7m) for a search.
Harris’s daughter, Cambria, has been a champion of her mother and of the need for a search.
Related: The daughter fighting to recover her mother’s remains from a landfill
After police confirmed her mother’s remains had been identified, she wrote on Facebook that it was “a very bittersweet moment”.
“Please keep our families in your hearts tonight and every day going forward as we trust this process,” the post said. “I believe both our families will bring both of our loved ones home.”
At least 4,000 Indigenous women and girls have been murdered or gone missing in recent decades, in what a landmark 2019 report described as a “genocide”. In a backdrop of systemic inequity and injustice, vulnerable Indigenous women continue to be victims of neglectful policies and state indifference.

Xbox-Branded Handheld Planned For Later This Year – Report
Xbox-Branded Handheld Planned For Later This Year – Report
There could be an official Xbox-branded handheld out by the end of this year. A new report states that Microsoft is partnering with a PC gaming company, like ASUS or Lenovo, on the device, with a targeted launch in 2025.
According to WindowsCentral, the handheld is codenamed Keenan and will be similar in nature to the upcoming Lenovo Legion Go S–which will be the first device outside the Steam Deck family to run on Valve’s SteamOS. So, the Xbox-branded handheld will likely run on Windows, featuring the Microsoft Store and PC Game Pass. The report also states the system will likely sport an Xbox guide button and aesthetics that fit the Xbox ethos.
Interestingly enough, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer mentioned an Xbox handheld is a “few years out” in November. (Spencer, for his part, has teased making an Xbox handheld for a while now, too.) This longer-term plan lines up with the report of the next Xbox launching in 2027. Basically, Microsoft plans to kick off the next generation with a Xbox Series X successor accompanied by an internally developed handheld system.
However, unsurprisingly, it’s noted that this schedule could shift as Microsoft works on the future of the Xbox brand. For instance, WindowsCentral points to the Xbox-licensed handheld scheduled for this year to serve as sort of a test drive for Microsoft. There is also no specific details on the partnering company, which could also be Razer or MSI.
GameSpot has contacted Microsoft seeking comment on this report.
Earlier this year, a Call of Duty leaker claimed the next Xbox is planned for 2026. One aspect that Spencer has touched on is that the next Xbox hardware must be more innovative.

Shares of Trump Media dropped more than 10% in intraday trading Monday, accelerating the company’s downward slide since President Donald Trump took office.
The company behind Trump’s preferred social media app Truth Social was trading below $20 per share around 3:00 p.m. ET — down about 50% from its closing price on Jan. 20, the day Trump was sworn in.

Trump Media (DJT) Stock Price
Monday’s sell-off put Trump Media on pace for its worst day since Jan. 21, when DJT stock retreated from the buying frenzy that preceded the Republican president’s inauguration.
Since then, the company has suffered a seven-week losing streak.
But Trump Media isn’t the only one feeling the pain: Stocks plummeted across the board Monday, as the market volatility that dragged down all three major indexes last week intensified.
The losses hurt other media companies with much larger market capitalizations than Trump Media, such as Reddit, which was on pace for its worst day ever.
Trump Media last month reported losing $400 million in 2024, while taking in $3.6 million in revenue.

The company debuted on the Nasdaq in March 2024 after going public through a long-sought merger with a special purpose acquisition company. The merger sent DJT stock soaring, as the company attracted thousands of investors seeking to support then-candidate Trump, the majority owner.
More than a month after winning the Nov. 4 presidential election against former Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump transferred his entire stake — 114,750,000 shares — to a revocable trust.

You Can Now Romance A Popular Baldur’s Gate 3 Character In Stardew Valley
If the internet has taught me anything, its that Stardew Valley and Baldur’s Gate 3 are two games folks simply cannot get enough of, myself included. Fortunately, a newly-released, fan-made mod, Baldur’s Village, combines the two in a pretty spectacular way. With the Baldur’s Village mod, Stardew players can add 20+ characters, six new locations, new shops, new items, and new events, all inspired by Baldur’s Gate 3, to the popular farming sim.
“A new village has recently been built north of Pelican Town, and its new residents seem… rather unusual,” the mods description reads. “You can find the entrance to Baldur’s Village at the top of the southern mountain map, right next to Linus’ tent.”
After venturing up north, players will be greeted by an entirely new area occupied by several familiar faces, including Gale, Shadowheart, Wyll, Karlach, Halsin, and everyone’s favorite, blood-sucking aristocrat, Astarion. Currently, Astarion is the only new neighbor players will be able to romance, as he is the only one the team has finished designing heart events and gift preferences for. However, the team has confirmed that its next focus will be creating Halsin’s romance storyline, followed by expanding world-building background stories and gameplay features.
Gallery
In order to get the Baldur’s Village mod up and running, players will also need to install the Stardew Modding API (SMAPI), the Stardew Valley Content Patcher, and the Portraiture mod, all of which can be downloaded for free over at Nexus Mods. Players already using Stardew Valley mods might already have these downloaded, as several of the game’s most popular mods require SMAPI and the Content Patcher to run. Once the mod is installed, players need not worry about starting a new game to experience the Baldur’s Gate bliss–the mod should seamlessly integrate the new content into existing save files.
Despite launching less than 24 hours ago, Baldur’s Village is already proving to be a very popular mod, with nearly 90,000 views and 12,000 total downloads as of writing. Considering mods have played a pivotal role in keeping both Stardew Valley and Baldur’s Gate 3 fresh and exciting for repeat players, the success of Baldur’s Village is exciting yet hardly surprising.

Elon Musk says X hit by ‘cyber-attack’ as thousands report outage
Elon Musk says X hit by ‘cyber-attack’ as thousands report outage
Elon Musk says X (formerly Twitter) has been hit by a “massive cyber-attack” on Monday, after thousands of users in the *** and US reported outages.
Mr Musk, who has owned the platform since late 2022, suggested the attack may be ongoing.
“We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources,” he wrote in a post on X.
He suggested that “either a large, coordinated group and/or a country is involved”.
The BBC has approached X for comment.
It comes after platform outage monitor Downdetector said it had seen tens of thousands of reports from US users of technical issues affecting the platform on Monday.
There were more than 8,000 outage reports from *** users shortly before 14:00 GMT, following a brief but notable surge of reports on Monday morning.
Many users trying to access the platform and refresh feeds on its app and desktop site during Monday’s outages were met with a loading icon.
Alp Toker, director of Netblocks, which monitors the connectivity of web services, said its own metrics suggested the outages could well be linked to a cyber-attack.
“What we’ve been seeing is consistent with what we’ve seen in past denial of service attacks, rather than a configuration or coding error in the platform,” he told BBC News.
He said the organisation has seen several major outages spanning more than six hours on Monday, “each having global impact”.
“This is amongst the longest X/Twitter outages we’ve tracked in terms of duration, and the pattern is consistent with a denial of service attack targeting X’s infrastructure at scale,” he added.
A distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack is an attempt to take a website offline by overwhelming it with internet traffic.
Mr Musk has previously claimed that the platform has been targeted by DDoS attacks, but these have not been confirmed.

The physicist on a mission to spark a quantum industrial revolution
The physicist on a mission to spark a quantum industrial revolution
The French inventor Jacques de Vaucanson is remembered for, among other things, producing three curious automata in the 18th century. A poster from the time advertised them all side by side: a figure that played a real flute, another that banged a tambourine and a duck that gobbled up corn and seemingly turned it into pellets of… well, use your imagination.
For physicist Nicole Yunger Halpern, based at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Maryland, these antiquated automata have a resonance with some of today’s most cutting-edge technology. Vaucanson’s inventions prefigured the industrial revolution, during which mechanisation went from being a quirky curiosity to a force that reshaped the globe. We may be at an analogous turning point today when it comes to quantum technology, says Yunger Halpern.
The steam-powered world of the industrial revolution may seem far removed from the quantum realm. But this ******* of dramatic change was bolstered by thermodynamics, which deals with heat, work and energy. And, recently, physicists have been applying its ideas to the subatomic realm to devise the new field of quantum thermodynamics. This has seen the development of machines like quantum fridges, batteries and clocks.
However, these are just the start of the quantum technology revolution, says Yunger Halpern. She was a co-author of a recent manifesto aiming to chart a path towards greater things. She spoke to New Scientist about what advanced quantum machines might look like, the astounding benefits they could bring and how we can work towards making them a reality.

A surprise Control update brings Hideo Kojima and HDR to the PC version
A surprise Control update brings Hideo Kojima and HDR to the PC version
The fantastic third-person adventure Control, developed by Remedy Entertainment, just got a surprise software update. The biggest news here is HDR support, which should be a real boon for graphics-minded gamers.
Interestingly, HDR support started as a mod. It was made by a Remedy dev as a passion project and now it’s in the actual game. That’s always nice to hear. There’s a video below with a lot more information as to how this was done.
To view this content, you’ll need to update your privacy settings. Please click here and view the “Content and social-media partners” setting to do so.
The update also brings improved DLSS support. The game now integrates with DLSS 3.7. This isn’t the latest DLSS 4.0 release, but it’ll get the job done. Film grain has been added back to DLSS SR and the devs have enhanced shadow resolution when DLSS is enabled. Otherwise, the update brings a new “Ultra” ray-tracing preset, which the dev promises “more rays per pixel and higher temporal stability.”
There’s ultrawide monitor support for up to 48:9 displays, a new FOV scaling setting for the camera and rendering resolution support beyond 4K. This is very much a graphics-focused update.
To view this content, you’ll need to update your privacy settings. Please click here and view the “Content and social-media partners” setting to do so.
The newly-released features do, however, go beyond looks. All outfits that were formerly pre-order or console-specific exclusives will now be available to everyone. Also, all players can now access a mission called Dr. Yoshimi Tokui’s Guided Imagery Experience. This is the one that includes voice work by Hideo Kojima. This mission was previously exclusive to the PS4 Digital Deluxe version of the game.
Beyond that, there are the usual minor bug fixes, including one for the end game credits. The update is available right now for PC players, with a console version on the way.

Dyson vacuums have one big problem and I don’t understand why
Dyson vacuums have one big problem and I don’t understand why
As TechRadar’s Homes Editor, I spend a lot of my time testing and writing about vacuums. It is my opinion that Dyson makes some of the very best vacuum cleaners on the market. They’re super easy to maneuver, they’re well-built, and the suction is excellent. Some even have things like lasers, sensors, and LED screens. But almost all of them – bar the very top model – have one big, basic usability issue, and I just can’t understand why.
Here it is: the trigger needs to be continually held down when using the vacuum.
If you’re vacuuming anything ******* than a doormat, that means a sore index finger. It impedes maneuverability too, because you need to factor in your poor digits when twisting the vacuum into awkward corners. I’ve tested lots of vacuums now, and in my experience it’s rare that the manufacturer won’t provide a way to lock the power on for continuous running. Yet, whenever I get my Dyson V8 out to do some comparative testing, I am immediately frustrated by the trigger setup.
There’s no way to activate continuous running on most Dyson vacuums, including the V8 (Image credit: Future)
It’s not a price thing; most of the best budget vacuums address this potential problem. Even the ultra-cheap vacuum I purchased when I bought my first flat (and discovered, to my horror, how much such boring adult appliances could cost), had a simple-but-effective plastic clip that held the trigger down. Sure, the suction was barely a gentle breeze, but at least my finger wasn’t getting sore as I waved my new vac ineffectually across my floors.
What’s more baffling to me is that Dyson is clearly investing in product development. It’s one of the best vacuum brands when it comes to innovation. This is an incredibly basic usability issue that absolutely should have been addressed before Dyson started messing around with lasers and real-time dust sensors.
Button vs trigger
The brand has fixed the issue on the Dyson Gen5detect – the newest and best Dyson vacuum by specs. That model uses a single-press button rather than a trigger for operation, which means your fingers don’t need to get involved at all (except for tuning it on or off).
But the Gen5detect is a very expensive model, mainly because it’s packed with tech and advanced engineering. While I’m happy the Gen5 exists, for most people it’ll be overkill. I generally think something like the Dyson V11 offers a much better balance of performance to price, and I’d wholeheartedly recommend it… if it weren’t for that pesky trigger issue.
Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more.

Dyson was late in addressing its trigger problem, and I think it should consider retrospectively fixing the issue on at least some of the four or so models that remain in the current lineup and precede the Gen5. Let’s not forget that even these older models are still not particularly cheap. Imagine splashing $749.99 / £649.99 / AU$1,449 on a V15 Detect and discovering Dyson hasn’t even spared a thought for your poor index finger.

Wood-eating beetles may make wildfires emit even more carbon
An experiment tests how holes from tree-killing beetles affect carbon emissions when wood burns
Shudong Zhang et al. 2025
Beetle attacks on dead wood could boost the amount of carbon released during wildfires.
“The beetles do make a difference,” says Hans Cornelissen at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in the Netherlands.
Researchers already knew that, by killing trees, insect infestations in forests can alter the risk of wildfires. Many species of beetles and other insects also eat downed trees on the forest floor, leaving tracks and holes in…

It’s been a long time coming for AMD to reveal RDNA 4, but has it been worth the wait? Presently, the only two graphics cards of AMD’s current GPU generation, the RX 9070 XT and 9070, seek the fill the budget space left in the market by Nvidia, as Team Green has pushed the bleeding edge of performance (and prices) up over the years.
With that said, there’s a lot to go over with the RX 9070 XT vs 9070 as RDNA 4 features many important distinctions. While they’re both substantially cheaper than some of the best graphics cards made by Nvidia, coming in at the same asking price as the RTX 5070 (no longer competing at the high-end market), there’s a lot that will go into your decision of the standard or XT card in 2025.
Neither the RX 9070 XT nor the RX 9070 will expressly rival what the best 4K graphics cards can do, however, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by what RDNA 4 can do from a price-to-performance perspective. We’re comparing the two graphics cards based on their price, specs, performance, and more so that you’re fully informed whether you’re considering an upgrade or debating the switch from Team Green to Team Red.
AMD RX 9070 XT vs RX 9070: Price
(Image credit: Future / John Loeffler)
Both the AMD RX 9070 XT and the RX 9070 were released on March 6, 2025. The former is available from $599 whereas the latter is slightly cheaper at $549.
On the surface, there’s only a $50 price difference between the two, which would make the choice fairly straightforward, however, that’s before factoring in the lack of an AMD-made Reference model, meaning it’s solely up to AMD’s partners to create, distribute, and set the prices for their RDNA 4 graphics cards.
While you may be able to find both the RX 9070 XT and the RX 9070 for their respective MSRPs, you’re more likely to see graphics cards that are more expensive than the recommended sticker prices depending on whether they are overclocked and feature enhanced cooling solutions. There’s no shortage of AIB options, such as those from Asus, Sapphire, PowerColor, and Gigabyte, among others.
With that said, the RX 9070 is still the cheaper of the two RDNA 4 graphics cards, which brings an even more affordable gaming GPU even when compared to the similarly priced RX 9070 XT. If you can benefit from the lower price, then it’s a great value proposition, but if you can’t, then you’re better off eyeing up the RX 9070 XT for the sake of a $50 difference instead.

As you may expect from the RX 9070 XT vs RX 9070, given the $50 difference, the two graphics cards are remarkably similar in many ways.
They are both midrange offerings in the market, featuring 16GB GDDR6 memory with a 256-bit memory bus and 20 Gbps effective memory, and they are PCIe 5.0 compliant.
However, where the former excels is in its larger amount of Compute Units, Shaders, and AI cores by around 14%, which means a theoretical performance potential difference of about 10% depending on the software in question.
The RX 9070 XT can also be pushed 17% more with its near-3,000 MHz clock speed against the 9070’s just over 2,500 MHz boost clock.
However, the added boost in power potential means the total thermal power draw is significantly higher in the more expensive card by an unsubtle 38%, from 220W up to 304W.
This could be a make-or-break feature if you have a smaller PSU inside your machine and don’t want to upgrade it alongside the GPU, so that’s something to keep in mind.
AMD RX 9070 XT vs 9070: Performance
(Image credit: Future / John Loeffler)
While there’s only a $50 difference between the RX 9070 XT and 9070, paired with incredibly similar hardware under the hood, the performance disparity of both graphics cards shows what that extra gear can do.
Starting with the synthetic benchmarks, the RX 9070 XT confidently pulls ahead in benchmarking tools such as GeekBench 6 Compute (OpenGL and Vulcan) with respective scores of 178,857 and 210,051 compared to 150,919 and 192,027 (differences of 18.5% and 9.3%). Similarly, many 3DMark benchmarks, including Time Spy and Fire Strike, feature a 10-15% improvement when contrasted directly.
Looking at how both RDNA 4 graphics cards handle creative workloads, it’s neck-and-neck for the most part.
A slight gap in favor of the non-XT model can be seen in PugetBench for Adobe Premiere with figures of 14,306, in contrast to 13,615 (an increase of 5%). The XT card is slightly better at Blender, but neither card is great for this workload compared to a comparable Nvidia card in this class.
The two GPUs have respective strengths and weaknesses, where you may be better with the standard model if you’re doing more creativity-focused tasks instead of purely gaming.
The RX 9070 is (arguably) more at home when used for gaming in 1440p instead of 2160p, as our testing indicates. For example, Cyberpunk 2077 in Ultra settings was no problem for the RDNA 4 GPU at 113fps averages, nor was ****** Myth: Wukong at 70fps averages.
There are diminishing returns between the two graphics cards depending on the game in this target resolution, with near-identical figures in Civilization VII (208 versus 202fps) and comparable numbers in Dying Light 2 with ray tracing enabled. If 4K is the way you want to play, splash the cash for the XT; if 1440p is more your speed, you may get away with saving that money.
All of the marketing around the RX 9070 XT promises “Native 4K Ultra” so that’s the main resolution we’ll be looking at with our in-house benchmarks. The graphics cards delivered 63fps averages in ****** Myth: Wukong with 50% upscaling in Cinematic, whereas the cheaper RX 9070 only hit 55fps averages (a difference of 16.3%).
The same can be said of Cyberpunk 2077 in Ultra settings, of which the 9070 XT averaged 61fps, but the 9070 standard couldn’t hit the mark at just 53fps (15% improvement). However, that’s not to say the latter card necessarily struggles; it ran Civilization VII on max settings at over 128fps, with Dying Light 2 at 79fps as well.
AMD RX 9070 XT vs RX 9070: Verdict
While the RX 9070 XT and 9070 are incredibly similar, they have slightly different use cases and are priced accordingly. For the extra 4K power, you’re going to want to spend the additional $50 (or so) for the XT variant as it’s genuinely capable of 4K60 and above.
However, if you’re only interested in 1440p gaming, then you won’t really benefit from the increase in shaders, compute units, and the higher boost clock speed in terms of real-world potential.
Ultimately, deciding on the two RDNA 4 cards is going to depend on the sticker price in your region. AMD has promised “wide availability” in direct response to Nvidia’s lacking RTX 50 series rollout since January 2025.
As such, finding the two at MSRP, for the sake of $50, you may as well get the faster card, but if there’s a much larger gap in price between the two, then the non-XT model holds up remarkably well.

What we know about the North Sea oil tanker collision
What we know about the North Sea oil tanker collision
Footage shows an oil tanker and a cargo vessel on fire in the North Sea
More than 30 people have been rescued following a collision between an oil tanker and a cargo vessel in the North Sea off the coast of East Yorkshire.
An emergency response has been ongoing since around 10:00 GMT on Monday and one vessel is believed to be leaking fuel into the sea. Here is what we know so far.
What are the ships involved in the incident?
The Stena Immaculate is a US-flagged oil and chemical tanker – which, at the time of the collision, was carrying jet fuel.
Crowley, the company which manages the vessel, confirmed that fuel had been released into the sea, though HM Coastguard said the extent of any pollution was still being assessed.
The Stena Immaculate was on its way to Hull after departing from a Greek port, according to ship tracking site MarineTraffic.
A US official told CBS News, the BBC’s US partner, that the Stena Immaculate tanker was transporting cargo on behalf of the American military.
The US maintains several military facilities in the ***. The official said the collision would not impact combat operations.
The Solong is a Portuguese-flagged container vessel with capacity to carry 9,500 tonnes of cargo.
It had been making its way south from the Scottish port of Grangemouth to Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
Photos and videos from the scene showed large clouds of smoke billowing out from the oil tanker, and the company which manages the Stena Immaculate has reported “multiple explosions”.
The Solong was carrying 15 containers of sodium cyanide among its cargo, according to a report from maritime data provider Lloyd’s List Intelligence.
Dr Mark Hartl, associate professor of marine biology at Herriot Watt University, said sodium cyanide is very soluble in water and can be toxic because it interferes with the respiration of animals, but at this point it is not clear if any has entered the water.
How did the collision unfold?
Data from tracking site MarineTraffic appears to indicate that one ship was moving and the other was nearly stationary when the collision happened.
The Stena Immaculate was drifting at a speed of 0.1 knots at 09:48 GMT.
The Solong approached from the north at a speed of 16 knots.
Crowley said the Stena Immaculate was struck by the Solong while it was anchored.
It said its cargo tank carrying jet fuel was ruptured in the ******, causing a fire and the release of fuel.
However, it is still unclear what caused the cargo ship to strike the oil tanker.
PA Media
How many people were on board?
We still do not know precisely how many people were on board, how many were injured or to what extent. No fatalities have been confirmed.
Local MP Graham Stuart said he had been informed that one person was in hospital, but the other 36 mariners across both crews were safe and accounted for, although that has not been confirmed by the authorities.
The chief executive of the Port of Grimsby earlier said that 32 people had been brought ashore.
The firm which operates the Stena Immaculate said its crew of more than 20 had all been brought to safety.
It is not known precisely how many people were on the Solong.

Souwest Jets endure demoralising start to West *********** Netball League season with heavy losses
Souwest Jets endure demoralising start to West *********** Netball League season with heavy losses
The Souwest Jets endured a demoralising start to their open and under-21 West *********** Netball League seasons at Gold Netball Centre on Wednesday night, suffering a pair of heavy defeats to Western Roar.
Coming up against the reigning premiers of both competitions shaped as a difficult early assignment and the gap in quality between the sides was clear to see, with the open side beaten by 62 goals and the juniors going down by 53 goals.
The result of the open game was particularly worrying, with the Jets both conceding their greatest score and coming up with their smallest for a number of seasons.
The Roar took a 27-goal lead into the main break which they grew further with a dominant second half when they piled on another 42 goals while conceding only seven, despite the efforts of Elycce Webb in the centre of the court.
For the Jets, Queensland recruit Maddie Grant scored seven goals, Rylee Hall — one of only three players retained by the club from last season — came up with four and training partner Lily Gilsenan came off the bench to contribute three.
In the under-21s clash, the Jets headed for the first break trailing by 21 goals and things did not improve much from there.
Wing attack Daisy de Morton was the side’s best performer and shooter Lily Knight came up with 20 goals.
On Saturday, the club’s futures side produced a strong performance in their clash with Fremantle Sharks at the Netball Centre, losing by only one goal.
Facing a five-goal deficit early in the final term, the Jets recovered to tie the scores in the final minute but a late Sharks goal saw them secure a 51-50 victory.
The Jets have won one of their four games for the season and own a percentage of 93.69.
The open side will be looking for a more competitive performance in their clash with Southside Demons at the Netball Centre on Wednesday, which will be broadcast live on Streamer.
The under-21 team will host the same opponent at Eaton Recreation Centre on Sunday and the futures team will come up against the Roar at the Netball Centre on Saturday.

JERUSALEM (AP) — An American biochemist whose research has helped scientists make inroads into treating coronavirus and **** has won this year’s Wolf Prize, a prestigious Israeli award in the arts and sciences.
Pamela Björkman of the California Institute of Technology won the prize for “offering new hope in the fight against infectious diseases,” the Wolf Fund, which awards the prize, said Monday.
Björkman’s research “unlocked the secrets of how the immune system identifies and battles pathogens, developing game changing approaches to combat some of humanity’s most formidable viral enemies,” the fund said.

Eight others also received the state-funded prize, which has been awarded annually for 47 years. Many of the award winners have gone on to receive Nobel prizes.
Björkman grew up in Oregon and studied at the University of Oregon, Harvard and Stanford before moving to Caltech to begin teaching in 1989. Her research focuses on how the immune system identifies invading pathogens. She has broken ground, the fund said, in how scientists understand T-cell recognition and immunization strategies for ****. T cells are white blood cells that help fight off diseases.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, she has worked on developing a new strategy to design immunogens that trigger certain antibodies against coronaviruses.
“Pamela Björkman’s work provides a glimpse of a new rational design strategy for future vaccines to deal with humanity’s greatest immunization challenges,” wrote the fund.
This year’s prize in architecture was awarded to ******** architect Tiantian Xu for her work in rural China, which the prize committee said “transformed villages throughout China economically, socially, and culturally.”
Xu studied architecture at Harvard Graduate School of Design before returning to China, starting her own firm and working on a number of public projects that have kickstarted village economies, the fund said. They include a bridge connecting two villages separated by a flood, factories for tofu and brown sugar and renovating abandoned stone quarries.
It lauded her “pioneering approach to rural development — one that contrasts with the sweeping, uniform strategies that characterized China’s urban expansion.”
Other recipients of this year’s award include Jeffery Dangl of the University of North Carolina, Jonathan Jones of the Sainsbury Laboratory in England and Brian Staskawicz of the University of California, Berkeley for agriculture.
Also receiving the prize are professors Jainendra Jain of Pennsylvania State University, Moty Heiblum of Israel’s Weizmann Institute of Science, James Eisenstein of Caltech in physics and Helmut Schwarz of the Technische Universität Berlin in chemistry.
Past laureates include astrophysicist Stephen Hawking, artist Marc Chagall, conductor Zubin Mehta and musician Stevie Wonder.
