I Know the Secrets of Trump’s Physique I Know the Secrets of Trump’s Physique Long-time White House reporter April Ryan has some theories about President Donald Trump‘s latest slimline look. On this week’s episode of The Daily Beast Podcast, co-hosts Joanna Coles and Samantha Bee asked Ryan, the longest-serving ****** White House correspondent in history for her take on Trump’s much-discussed weight loss. “Can I tell you something? I don’t know if he’s lost weight or maybe he’s using a Spanx,” Ryan said, joking that Trump could even be putting multiple layers of the iconic shapewear. “Oh, I don’t know—that’s painful.” “A manx, I think they’re called manx,” Coles noted, quipping that “they’re very cheap on Shein… get them before the tariffs.” “I really want to know if he’s on Ozempic though,” she continued. “Because we definitely spot it. I think he’s been losing weight.” The president’s slimmer physique earlier sparked speculations—and fawning praise from conservative reporters—that he could be on a weight loss drug. In his most recent physical exam, however, presidential physician Sean Barbabella attributed the 78-year-old’s “excellent health” to his “active lifestyle,” especially his love for golf. Ryan, the Washington bureau chief and senior White House correspondent for ****** Press USA, also called on her fellow reporters to “go back to the basics” in covering Trump as the White House drastically, well, reshapes the White House media briefing room. “We are still useful, but in reality they’re taking it over,” Ryan said of the Trump administration’s big changes to the press pool—and press freedoms more broadly. “I’m not into chastising other journalists, but we have to go back to the basics and not be friends of the president… and ask the questions,” she added. (Even if those questions are about girdles.) For more from Ryan, who also discussed an awkward mix-up at this year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner and broader morale in the White House Press Briefing room, as well as an interview with California gubernatorial candidate Stephen Cloobeck, listen to this week’s episode of The Daily Beast podcast in full. Elon Musk’s Starbase may soon be an official Texas city Elon Musk’s Starbase may soon be an official Texas city The South Texas home of Elon Musk’s SpaceX rocket company is on its way to becoming an official city with a galactic name: Starbase. A vote Saturday to formally organize Starbase as a city was approved by a lopsided margin by a small group of voters who live there and are mostly Musk’s employees at SpaceX. Starbase is the facility and launch site for the SpaceX rocket program that is under contract with the Department of Defense and NASA, which hopes to send astronauts back to the moon and someday to Mars. Early results look favorable Musk first floated the idea of Starbase in 2021, and approval of the new city was all but certain. Of the 283 eligible voters in the area, most are believed to be Starbase workers. Early voting results show 173 votes for the City of Starbase incorporation, or 97.74%. The election victory was personal for Musk. The billionaire’s popularity has diminished since he became the chain-saw-wielding public face of President Donald Trump’s federal job and spending cuts, and profits at his Tesla car company have plummeted. SpaceX has generally drawn widespread support from local officials for its jobs and investment in the area. Musk’s personal stake in the outcome But the creation of an official company town has also drawn critics who worry it will expand Musk’s personal control over the area, with potential authority to close a popular beach and state park for launches. Companion efforts to the city vote include bills in the state Legislature to shift that authority from the county to the new town’s mayor and city council. All these measures come as SpaceX is asking federal authorities for permission to increase the number of South Texas launches from five to 25 a year. The city at the southern tip of Texas near the Mexico border is only about 1.5 square miles (3.9 square kilometers), crisscrossed by a few roads and dappled with airstream trailers and modest midcentury homes. SpaceX officials have said little about exactly why they want a company town and did not respond to emailed requests for comment. “We need the ability to grow Starbase as a community,” Starbase General Manager Kathryn Lueders wrote to local officials in 2024 with the request to get the city issue on the ballot. The letter said the company already manages roads and utilities, as well as “the provisions of schooling and medical care” for those living on the property. Increased launch activity and beach closures SpaceX officials have told lawmakers that granting the city authority to close the beach would streamline launch operations. SpaceX rocket launches and engine tests, and even just moving certain equipment around the launch base requires the closure of a local highway and access to Boca Chica State Park and Boca Chica Beach. Critics say the beach closure authority should stay with the county government, which represents a broader population that uses the beach and park. Cameron County Judge Eddie Trevino, Jr. has said the county has worked well with SpaceX and there is no need for change. Another proposed bill would make it a Class B misdemeanor with up to 180 days in jail if someone doesn’t comply with an order to evacuate the beach. The South Texas Environmental Justice Network, which has organized protests against the city vote and the beach access issue, plan to hold another protest Saturday night as the polls close. FBI Issues Urgent Warning For Nationwide Concern FBI Issues Urgent Warning For Nationwide Concern Yahoo is using AI to generate takeaways from this article. This means the info may not always match what’s in the article. Reporting mistakes helps us improve the experience.Generate Key Takeaways The FBI has issued an urgent warning about a major scam that is sweeping the nation. On Wednesday, the FBI sounded the alarm on a scam that involves offering vulnerable people fake discount medical insurance plans. The scam has already cost people millions of dollars across the country. The FBI warned that the scam often begins with an unsolicited phone call, text, or email from someone posing as a representative of an insurance provider. The scammers then create a false sense of urgency by offering a limited-time deal or face missing out on reduced premiums. However, once the victims make the payments, no such coverage is ever put in place. “The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) warns the public of discount medical insurance scams. Discount medical insurance scams involve misleading or fraudulent offers for medical insurance plans that promise reduced rates on legitimate medical insurance but do not provide any actual medical insurance coverage, resulting in millions of dollars in losses annually,” the FBI warning reads. “These scams often target people who are looking for more affordable healthcare options and use misleading tactics such as stating to be a legitimate medical insurance provider, pressuring people to sign up quickly due to time limited special rates, or promising free services with hidden fees to lure people to sign up. A typical discount medical insurance scam begins with unsolicited contact via calls, texts, or emails from unknown businesses offering special deals or discounted medical insurance.” The FBI offered a list of several ways that people can protect themselves from the scam. Always make sure the medical plan offered is from a reputable source, and that the company is licensed to operate in your state. The state insurance commissioner or the Better Business Bureau are good sources to verify the veracity of a plan. Verify with current providers that they accept the insurance plan you are considering. If no policy documents are sent, this could be a sign of a fraudulent plan. If policy documents are sent, review them and read the fine print. Understand exactly what is being offered before committing to anything. Don’t pay anything upfront. Be cautious if a company asks for large upfront payments or seems to be pressuring you into making quick decisions. Do your own research. If the plan seems too good to be true, it probably is. Anyone who believes they were the victim of a scam has been urged to file a report with the FBI’s Internet Crimes Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov. Big sunspot appears, what this means for Earth Big sunspot appears, what this means for Earth TOPEKA (KSNT) – Astronomers are monitoring a large dark spot on the sun’s surface which could impact Earth in the days ahead. 27 News spoke with Brenda Culbertson this week, a solar system ambassador with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL), about a massive sunspot, dubbed 4079, and what it could mean for residents on Earth. She said astronomers have been monitoring the sunspot complex, which stretches nearly 87,000 miles across, for several days. “The energy from 4079 is very strong, and as it approaches the center of the solar face, it faces Earth directly,” Culbertson said. “If any major solar flares occur while it is facing Earth, we will receive a direct hit of solar energy and solar particles, setting off a geomagnetic storm.” (Photo Courtesy/Rick Heschmeyer) What new Kansas laws go into effect on July 1, 2025? The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) describes geomagnetic storms as major disturbances in the Earth’s magnetosphere which can result in increased activity of the northern lights/aurora borealis. Sunspots can erupt in events referred to as coronal mass ejections (CME) which send solar particles out into space and towards Earth on occasion. Periods of especially intense geomagnetic storms can result in disruptions to technology and widespread blackouts. “One of the largest sunspot areas in recorded history occurred 1-2 September 1859, and it produced what is now called the Carrington Event,” Culbertson said. “That was a geomagnetic storm so strong that aurora was seen around Earth, disrupted electric grids, caused blackouts, and even reportedly started fires in telegraph stations. Sunspot 4079 covers about half the area that caused the Carrington Event, so we do not expect anything majorly disruptive from it.” People in the U.S. witnessed the impact of one especially potent geomagnetic storm in 2024, referred to as the Gannon solar storm, that brought the northern lights into parts of the Midwest. Culbertson said some people may see strong activity of the lights in the days ahead if conditions prove favorable. For now, Culbertson and other astronomers will continue to monitor sunspot 4079. The SWPC may issue an alert for a geomagnetic storm in the near future, ranking it on a scale of G1 to G5 depending on its strength, to notify people about the possibility of seeing the northern lights. Romania reruns controversial election after earlier vote annulled Romania reruns controversial election after earlier vote annulled Romanians will try again to elect a new president today, six months after the first attempt ended in scandal and confusion. A radical outsider with mystical leanings, Calin Georgescu, came first on 24 November, but that result was annulled over allegations of campaign fraud and Russian interference. In February, US Vice President JD Vance sharply criticised Romania for that decision, sending shockwaves through a Romanian political establishment which leans heavily on its special relationship with the US. Georgescu was nevertheless barred from taking part in today’s rerun. This election pits a nationalist, George Simion, leader of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), against three centrists: the popular mayor of Bucharest Nicusor Dan; Crin Antonescu, a liberal who represents the governing Social-Democrat and National Liberal coalition; and Elena Lasconi, an independent. Seven other candidates are on the ballot paper. If no candidate wins over 50% of the vote, a run-off between the first two candidates will be held on 18 May. “This election is not about one candidate or another, but about every Romanian who has been lied to, ignored, humiliated, and still has the strength to believe and defend our identity and rights,” Simion posted on X on Friday. Opinion polls – notoriously unreliable in Romania – suggest that he will come first today, then will face a tough contest with either Nicusor Dan or Crin Antonescu in the run-off. The result is awaited nervously in European capitals, Washington, Kyiv and Moscow. Romania is an important transit route for weapon systems and ammunition to Ukraine. The country has a US missile defence shield at Deveselu, and three major airbases from which Nato flies air policing missions up to the border of Ukraine and Moldova, and out over the ****** Sea. Ukraine exports 70% of its grain down the ****** Sea coast, through Romanian territorial waters, towards Istanbul. The Romanian navy demines those waters, and the Romanian air force trains Ukrainian pilots to fly F-16s. The Trump administration is reassessing its commitment to Romania. A visa-waiver agreement was abruptly cancelled on the eve of the election. “Forget about any more help to Ukraine if Simion becomes president,” says George Scutaru, a security expert at the New Strategy Center in Bucharest. As head of the National Security Council, the president can veto any decision, and has a strong influence on security policy. But Scutaru expresses “prudent optimism” that one of the centrists will win the run-off. Public resentment at Romanian financial support for Ukrainian refugees has been a central plank in Simion’s campaign, though he denies he is pro-Russian. On a baking May afternoon, crowds of sightseers throng the gardens of the Cotroceni Palace, the presidential residence in the west of Bucharest. The decision by interim President Ilie Bolojan to open the buildings and gardens to the public is very popular among the visitors. White and purple irises line the paths beneath ancient horse chestnuts in full flower. A military band marches among flowerbeds of ******** and violets. The palace is a former monastery, converted in the 17th century, which became home to the Romanian royal family in the 19th century. “I can’t really imagine Simion in here…” Ionut, a satirical writer, tells me beside an ornate waterfall, looking up at the palace walls. He voted for Simion in the first round of the election last November, out of anger at the constant delays to Romania’s full membership of the Schengen free-travel zone. And frustration with Romania’s outgoing president, Klaus Iohannis. But Romania finally joined the Schengen land-borders on 1 January, and Iohannis stepped aside the same month. “Romanians are less angry now,” he believes. He told his daughter he will vote for Nicusor Dan in this election, but hasn’t quite made up his mind. Ana, a management consultant, walking with her family through the palace gardens, also supports Nicusor Dan. “I want to vote for both continuity and change,” she says. “Continuity in Romania’s relationship with Europe, but change as far as corruption is concerned. We young people don’t relate to the old parties any more,” – something Nicusor Dan has in common with Simion. Many in Romania’s large diaspora – a million are registered to vote – have already cast their ballots, especially in Spain, Italy, Germany and the ***. They are invisible in opinion polls, and could easily sway the final result. Trump administration plans to cut thousands of employees at spy agencies Trump administration plans to cut thousands of employees at spy agencies The Trump administration plans to significantly shrink the workforce of the Central Intelligence Agency and other U.S. intelligence agencies, with the aim of cutting thousands of employees over several years, two sources with knowledge of the matter told NBC News. The administration’s cost-cutting approach at the CIA and other intelligence agencies suggests a more calibrated effort than its strategy at other federal departments, with some agencies — such as the U.S. Agency for International Development — essentially dismantled. Lawmakers have been told that the downsizing would cut about 1,000 to 1,200 employees at the CIA, the sources said. The agency does not disclose the size of its workforce, but leaked documents in 2013 showed the agency had more than 21,000 employees. The Washington Post first reported on the planned personnel cutbacks. The CIA declined to comment on details of planned reductions to the agency’s workforce. It was unclear how the cuts would affect different departments. A CIA spokesperson said in an email that the agency’s director, John Ratcliffe, “is moving swiftly to ensure the CIA workforce is responsive to the Administration’s national security priorities.” “These moves are part of a holistic strategy to infuse the Agency with renewed energy, provide opportunities for rising leaders to emerge, and better position CIA to deliver on its mission,” the spokesperson added. Other intelligence agencies, which unlike the CIA fall under the Defense Department’s budget, are looking to make personnel cuts in line with the Pentagon’s goal of reducing the civilian workforce by up to 8%, according to one of the sources with knowledge of the matter and a former intelligence official. The cuts at the CIA and other spy agencies would be achieved through a combination of scaling back hiring, early retirements and so-called “buyout” options for those ready to accept a one-time offer to resign later this year. But no mass firings were planned, the sources said. The planned cutbacks come at a time of heightened security threats, with China’s military power on the rise, Russia carrying out a sabotage campaign in Europe while waging a war in Ukraine and Iran pressing ahead with its nuclear program. At a Cabinet meeting at the White House on Wednesday, the director of national intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, said her office is “25 % smaller and more lean today than when I walked in the door” in mid-February. Gabbard did not elaborate. At her Senate confirmation hearing in January, Gabbard said she supported scaling back the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, which oversees the country’s spy agencies. The ODNI did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The cuts come as the Trump administration and Elon Musk’s advisory Department of Government Efficiency attempt to dramatically slash the federal workforce. Although the administration plans to avoid mass firings, it tried to fire dozens of employees at the CIA and ODNI because they had been assigned temporary jobs working on diversity programs. A group of the employees challenged their firings in court, and a federal judge in March issued a temporary injunction halting their dismissals. The CIA additionally offered buyouts to its workforce in February. British police foil terrorist attack – five arrested British police foil terrorist attack – five arrested British counter terrorism police have arrested five men after uncovering a plot to attack an unspecified target. Counter Terrorism Police did not identify the target for operational reasons, the Metropolitan Police said. Four of the men arrested on Saturday, are Iranian nationals and the nationality of the fifth is still being established. The Met’s Counter Terrorism Command is leading the investigation which resulted in the arrests of: a 29-year-old man in the Swindon area; a 46-year-old man in west London; a 29-year-old man in the Stockport area; a 40-year-old man in the Rochdale area; a fifth man in the Manchester area. Endowment for the Arts begins to cancel grants after Trump calls for disbanding agency Endowment for the Arts begins to cancel grants after Trump calls for disbanding agency May 3 (UPI) — The National Endowment for the Arts has begun to cancel grants to recipients after President Donald Trump on Friday revealed a budget plan calling for the elimination of the agency as he aims to exert governmental influence over the cultural sector. The NEA — along with the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting — was one of some 16 “small agencies” marked for elimination in Trump’s 2026 budget proposal. In the budget plan, White House officials wrote that the disbanding of the agencies was “consistent” with Trump’s aims to slash the federal government to “enhance accountability, reduce waste, and reduce unnecessary governmental entities.” The operations of the small agencies amount to some $3.5 billion of the federal budget while Elon Musk’s SpaceX has received some $15.3 billion in government contracts alone since 2003. Musk oversees the Department of Governmental Efficiency’s efforts to cull what it views as wasteful spending for the Trump administration. “We have some difficult news to share with you all. This evening we were informed by the National Endowment for the Arts that they are withdrawing their $25,000 grant in support of our current production of Joe Turner’s Come and Gone,” the Portland Playhouse in Oregon said in a statement on social media Friday. “To receive this news on the eve of opening night is deeply disappointing. While we have no plans currently to cancel our production, moving forward without the support of this critical funding presents a significant challenge for our company.” The NEA was established in 1965 under President Lyndon B. Johnson as part of his Great Society agenda to foster creativity and bring cultural enrichment to all Americans. Though it represents less than 0.004% of the federal budget, the NEA has long been a target of political scrutiny, particularly from conservative lawmakers who argue that public funds should not support art deemed controversial or elitist. Trump previously proposed eliminating the NEA during his first term, but the effort was repeatedly blocked by Congress, where the agency enjoys bipartisan support from lawmakers representing districts that benefit from cultural tourism and arts-related economic development. This time, however, Trump has more tools at his disposal, including his DOGE allies and a Republican-controlled budget committee that appears more willing to implement his sweeping cuts. House Speaker Mike Johnson has already endorsed Trump’s proposal. Arts advocates warn that the real impact of the proposed elimination won’t just be felt in major metropolitan museums but in small-town programs that rely on NEA matching funds to unlock local and state-level support. In many cases, losing the NEA grant could trigger a domino effect that makes it harder for organizations to qualify for private philanthropy or regional grants. The cancellation of grants has affected everything from playhouses to publishing houses, from visual arts centers to film festivals. A list of 2025 grant recipients shows hundreds of recipients across America’s small towns. Will Evans of the Texas-based nonprofit publishing house Deep Vellum called the NEA “politically weaponized” on social media. “They can’t cancel literature; they can’t cancel dialogue. Donate & let’s fight this [expletive] together!” Evans said. The cancellation of the grants was sent by email to the affected arts organizations. According to The New York Times, which reviewed the emails sent to various grant recipients, there were at least two versions of the message. Roslan Rahman | Afp | Getty Images Singapore’s ruling People Action Party has expectedly been returned to power in a landslide victory in the country’s 14th general election. The PAP bagged 87 seats in the 97-seat parliament, while the main opposition Workers Party held on to its 10 seats in an election that saw a turnout of 92.47%. There were 92 seats up for election, after the PAP won five seats in a walkover on Nomination Day on April 23. The ruling party also increased its vote share, garnering 65.57% of the national vote compared to the 61.2% seen in the 2020 election. This election was Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s first as prime minister, and was dominated by cost of living issues, as well as job prospects in the country and economic growth, according to local media outlet CNA. Wong is the first PAP leader to have improved the party’s vote share in his first election. The PAP’s vote share fell in the 1991 and 2006 elections, when Singapore saw a change in prime minister in 1990 and 2004. Wong, who is also finance minister, took over from Lee Hsien Loong in May 2024. Lee currently serves as Senior Minister in Wong’s cabinet. The PAP has ruled Singapore since 1959, when the city-state under the British gained full self-government. Singapore became independent in 1965. Speaking after the election, Wong said that he was “deeply humbled and grateful for the results,” adding that “Singaporeans have given the PAP a clear and strong mandate to govern.” “The results will put Singapore in a better position to face this turbulent world. Many are watching the elections closely, whether it’s international media, investors or foreign governments, they will have taken note of tonight’s results. It’s a clear signal of trust, stability and confidence in your government.” Early Sunday morning, the U.S. State Department congratulated Wong on the PAP’s victory, saying it looks forward to working closely with the new government to strengthen economic growth and defense ties. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also said in a post on X that the EU valued its “excellent cooperation” with Singapore. “Our partnership is deepening, in trade and investment, and also defence, security, innovation,” she added. The election also comes as Singapore grapples with slowing economic growth and an uncertain trade situation. In April, Singapore had downgraded its GDP growth forecast to 0%-2%, with the country’s monetary authority easing policy twice this year. First-quarter GDP for the country came in lower than expected, at 3.8%. Wong had warned earlier this year that Singapore may go into a recession in 2025, and had formed a task force led by Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong in April to help businesses and workers navigate the immediate uncertainties arising from U.S. tariffs and related global developments. Gan held a call with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick last month. Singapore is seeking concessions for pharmaceutical exports to the U.S., while also working with Washington to strengthen export controls for high-end AI chips, Gan said following the meeting. However, he also said Lutnick conveyed that the 10% baseline tariff imposed by the Trump administration in early April was an “umbrella,” and not likely subject to negotiation. Singapore was hit with the 10% tariff, despite having a trade deficit with the U.S. and a free trade agreement since 2004. Man faces massive penalty after decades-old trees stolen: ‘It is deplorable’ Man faces massive penalty after decades-old trees stolen: ‘It is deplorable’ A man in Adams, Tennessee, is facing accusations of stealing valuable timber from farms in Robertson County and floating the trees down the Red River, The Tribune reported. The officials searched the farms and found evidence that the stolen ****** walnut trees were cut down and pulled to the Red River using a winch. The downed trees were then floated down the river at night, and officials said that they were most likely pulled from the river at a boat ramp in Adams and transported to Clarksville to be sold to a lumber dealer. Agricultural Crimes Detective Terry Morris determined that Ricky Shearon Winn was behind the timber theft. The Agriculture Crimes Unit arrested Winn as a suspect on March 10. According to officials, he’s charged with two counts of theft of property worth over $2,500, two counts of vandalism, and two counts of trespassing. According to MK Timber, ****** walnut trees are prized for their valuable lumber, which can be processed into various products. As of 2022, the average price of a ****** walnut tree can range anywhere from $300 to $1,000. Their high-value lumber makes ****** walnut trees a profitable crop, but it also makes them a target for poachers. Sheriff Michael Van ***** mentioned that one of the victims had planted the trees 30 years ago “to provide retirement income for himself and his family.” With the trees stolen, the victim has lost a major source of retirement income. Watch now: Giant snails invading New York City? “It is deplorable that someone would not only violate and steal someone’s property but also take away their livelihood,” Van ***** said. Beyond being a lucrative source of income, ****** walnut trees are also valuable to the environment. They’re effective at sequestering carbon and can store large amounts of it in their roots and trunks for a long time, which helps reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and cool the planet. Cutting them down will disrupt their ability to sequester carbon and contribute to a warming climate. News of the theft sparked outrage online, with some people expressing sympathy for the victims. “Thief should have to pay back 10x the value in restoration to land owners,” one user commented. “Then do jail time.” “Thank goodness they got him,” another commenter wrote. “Hopefully the owners of the trees get the money back from them.” The best thing individuals can do about tree theft is to report stolen timber as soon as possible and stay informed about tree laws. How Canada’s Mark Carney plans to win over Donald Trump How Canada’s Mark Carney plans to win over Donald Trump Getty Images On Mark Carney’s final day of a gruelling race to be elected PM of vast and sparsely populated Canada I was with him. It was his last push, not just to win, but also to get the majority he said he needed to stand up to the chaotic territorial and trade ambitions of his “neighbour to the south”. For someone who had got to see Carney as a cerebral technocrat, a crisis-managing central bank governor a decade ago, the transformation into public orator was quite something. I recall endless interviews trying to get the then governor to say something newsworthy, or something that would make a good headline. While this was a very different Mark Carney, the lineage in crisis economics was also part of his sell. Carney told his audience in Edmonton, Alberta, sporting the local Oilers hockey shirt: “President Trump has ruptured the global economy… America’s leadership of the global economy is over. It’s still in play, but it is a tragedy, and our new reality… in this trade war, just like in hockey, we will win”. His supporters shouted “Elbows Up” and put them up, a reference to a stand up and fight back posture in the occasionally rough game of ice hockey. “What we are seeing around the country is Canadians acting on behalf of other Canadians, standing up for each other, buying from each other, travelling here…” At his very final stop in the far West, in the isolation of Victoria, Vancouver Island, with only half an hour of campaigning allowed, Carney went “unplugged” among supporters. “As the assembled media will tell you, I campaigned in prose,” Carney joked. “So I’m going to govern in econometrics,” he said of the nerdy mathematical strain of economics. In normal circumstances, some of this might be interesting to the wider world. In current circumstances, the origins of his election win, his approach to policy making, and the nature of his mandate, could assume critical importance. When I caught up with him for the BBC exclusive interview, just as the polls were closing on Monday, he appeared confident but was taking nothing for granted. Fighting threats to sovereignty Mr Carney’s central argument remained consistent. He said he was the leader to take on Donald Trump’s “betrayal” and threats to Canada’s economy and sovereignty. It was exemplified by his final large rally on the US-Canada border, with the Ambassador Bridge and a skyline of iconic Detroit motoring firms behind him. This bridge is the main artery of *********-US trade. A lot of effort went into this backdrop of the two-way trade of the most integrated economies in the world, now tariffed at unimaginable levels. An unsubtle message from the Liberal Party leader, about a changed continent. The election result was staggering. Entering 2025, the Liberal Party was as low as 16%, versus 45% for the opposition Conservatives, in opinion polls. Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives were not just heading for victory, but for a total landslide. But then following President Trump’s imposition of national security tariffs on Canada, using the pretext of an alleged role in fentanyl traffic, and then his undiplomatic suggestion that Canada should join the USA, the polls tightened. Then after Mark Carney was elected Liberal leader, just eight weeks ago, the Liberals achieved a consistent poll lead, which they rode to victory last week. The election became a presidential-style verdict on who could cope with Trump. Poilievre was fundamentally weakened by previous overtures to the US president and his style of government. Carney incorporated voters on the left who were scared of a Conservative government amplified by Trump. And incredibly, in Quebec, the Liberals won back support from separatists, who were more concerned about Canada’s independence from the US, than their own constitutional status within Canada. There is nothing more unifying than a credible external threat. Carney’s strategyGetty Images Carney gave some clues to his strategy during his interview with me. He talked of a “win win” partnership with the US, and reminded the president that Canada was the “biggest client” of 40 of the 50 US states, and a key energy and fertiliser supplier. He also told me he “potentially could supply them with critical minerals”. This struck me as a negotiation tactic very targeted at what Trump has become fixated on elsewhere. Canada has ample resources of critical minerals, and would be a much more dependable supplier across the West than many other nations. Carney is implicitly suggesting, however, that his country has deep strategic choices to make here, on for example, developing them with Europe rather than the US. In any event, the PM will use the impetus of external threat to try to transform the ********* economy. Even in the granting of an interview to BBC News, it was clear that he sees a critical need to diversify trade and strategic alliances. Defence partnerships are now on the cards. He seemed to acknowledge that a stalled Canada-*** trade deal could be expedited. On Friday he pulled off the historic announcement that King Charles would reopen the ********* parliament in person at the end of the month. This has not happened since 1977. It is entirely in keeping with Canada’s constitution, but it is also a stunning assertion of enduring independence from the White House. All roads now lead to the G7 Summit hosted by Carney in the middle of June in Alberta, bringing together the world’s seven largest economies, which dominate global trade and the international financial system. Assuming that Trump comes, it will occur within days of the expiry of the pause in massive so-called “reciprocal tariffs” on most of the world. It is often forgotten that if Canada and Mexico free themselves from the fentanyl tariffs, they will then, according to White House advisers, find themselves subject to this system, with a minimum of 10% tariffs. All of this occurs within days of some growing frustration from America’s traditional allies with the entire “trade deal” process. Japan is increasingly frustrated, with its finance minister now openly pointing to Japan’s unbeaten holding of US government debt as a “card” in negotiations. The EU has not got very far. Even the *** has hinted that a deal with Europe may be a more effective way of boosting the economy. It comes as tariffs are starting to have a visible and tangible negative impact on US businesses and consumers. There is no great incentive to offer much up, while the US itself starts to feel the inevitable inflationary consequences of its actions. The flotilla of empty ******** cargo ships and empty docks on the US West Coast will soon be seen in the economic data of an already shrinking US economy. As a veteran of economic crises arising from the uncertain experiments of governments, Carney might be uniquely placed on how these situations pan out. Many in the markets have been thoroughly unimpressed with the White House advisers sent out to reassure investors in recent weeks. But Carney too has his own challenges. He just missed out on a majority in parliament, but has chosen to try to project this as a virtue. He will reach across the aisle for a “Team Canada” approach to talks with the US. The Premier of the oil-rich Alberta state, who is a regular visitor to Mar-a-Lago, immediately announced moves to make separation referendums easier. This is a very complicated, domestic, continental and global environment economically and politically. Few would predict exactly where it goes. Carney may have a very large part in it, and not just for his own country.
