  1. West Coast star Elliot Yeo to have further surgery on troublesome ankle as Eagles clearance concerns continue West Coast star Elliot Yeo to have further surgery on troublesome ankle as Eagles clearance concerns continue West Coast star Elliot Yeo is set for further surgery on his troublesome ankle injury which is set to sideline him until the second half of the season. It is a huge blow for the Eagles who are trying to find a solution to their clearance conundrum, with the team struggling in the middle of the ground in every game this season. Yeo injured both his knee and ankle in his right leg after he went down in a tackle during match simulation in January. It was hoped that the 31-year-old would return early in the season, but complications in his recovery from the ankle injury forced the club to send him to a specialist on Thursday. Eagles coach Andrew McQualter revealed the dual All-*********** would require further surgery to rectify the issue. “Yeoy is going to have some surgery just to remove some hardware from his ankle,” he said. “He’ll have a couple of weeks off legs and then build. We’re really confident Yeoy is going to play a fair chunk of football towards the end of the season. “I’m not exactly sure where that will be yet but that (surgery) will happen early next week and then he’ll have a few weeks to let the wound heal and then he’ll get to work. “He was having challenges to progress his rehab prior to this, I think at least he’s got an answer now of what needs to happen for the next steps.” Yeo’s absence in the midfield has been sorely felt in the opening months of McQualter’s reign. The premiership star led the Eagles for clearances (131), tackles (129) and contested possessions (244) last year while averaging 22 disposals in 20 games. Tim Kelly leads the Eagles for clearances in 2025 with only 24 through his team’s first eight games, ahead of Liam Baker (22), Harley Reid (21) and Elijah Hewett (19). West Coast have been the worst clearance team this season and it was evident again on Saturday night, with Melbourne smashing them 49-26 in a 32-point win at Optus Stadium. McQualter tried several moves to rectify the issue, with forwards Liam Ryan and Tyler Brockman as well as half-back Liam Baker swinging into the centre bounces as he tried to reverse the trend. Camera IconLiam Ryan. Credit: Paul Kane/Getty Images It mattered little as Melbourne ruckman Max Gawn (nine clearances), Norm Smith medallist Christian Petracca (eight) and former skipper Jack Viney (six) dominated in the midfield. “We tried a fair few things… you would have seen a few of the things we tried,” McQualter said of Saturday night. “We tried structure, we tried personnel. Firstly, we tried to just coach our mids really hard, talking to our mids, that’s the first thing we spoke about. “And then we had to pull some levers to change things, and it did in some ways even out a little bit in the second half… but it was just a bit overwhelming.” McQualter conceded moving the magnets also hurt the Eagles because of a lack of consistency in the role. “You learn but it actually sometimes makes the game more challenging,” he said. Camera IconAndrew McQualter suffered his eighth straight loss to start his coaching career. Credit: Daniel Carson/AFL Photos “The more levers you pull, the more things are out of whack for what you plan for all week. “Potentially the more confusion that comes in the game. It’s a fine line as a coach and a coaching group to how many levers you try to pull at one time to fix an area. “We are learning what works for us and we’ll learn more about what it will look like and how we need to look to get the game looking the way we need and want it to.” EAGLES CLEARANCE CRISISRound 1 v Gold Coast: 33-50Round 2 v Brisbane: 36-48Round 3 v Fremantle: 25-40Round 4 v GWS: 34-43Round 5 v Carlton: 18-40Round 6 v Essendon: 22-37Round 7 v Hawthorn: 36-45Round 8 v Melbourne: 26-49 Source link #West #Coast #star #Elliot #Yeo #surgery #troublesome #ankle #Eagles #clearance #concerns #continue Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  2. MAGA Melts Down Over Trump’s ‘Disrespectful’ Pope Post MAGA Melts Down Over Trump’s ‘Disrespectful’ Pope Post Even President Donald Trump‘s staunchly loyal MAGA base appeared to turn against the Republican president for posting an AI-generated image of himself as pope. Trump shared the AI-generated image in a Friday night Truth Social post after telling reporters that he “would like to be Pope.” He quipped that he was his own “No. 1 choice” to replace the late Pope Francis. However, some MAGA believers felt that not even Trump is above the papacy. “This is worse than trolling. You’re going to lose a lot of Catholic support over stunts like this,” wrote an X commentator who described themself as a Catholic and a conservative. Another commentator on X added: “I love Trump but find his Pope meme disrespectful and insulting. God will not be mocked. Not a wise decision. That said I pray for him. I pray for America.” Trump’s former White House communications director and practicing Catholic, Anthony Scaramucci, also slammed the president’s “stupidity. “Yes I get. You are trolling and trying to trigger all of us. Especially us Catholics,” Scaramucci wrote. “But the arrogance and general stupidity and the disgrace that you represent will blow back on all of you.” Vice President JD Vance appeared to brush off the “joke” with a spurious message about “stupid wars.” “As a general rule, I’m fine with people telling jokes and not fine with people starting stupid wars that kill thousands of my countrymen,” he wrote. Another commentator on X added: “Mr. President—please cease this offensive and sacrilegious behavior,” with others questioning how such a “satire” would play if the shoe were on the other foot. “This is not funny. This is not satire. This is EXTREMELY DISRESPECTFUL towards catholics. Shows poor judgement,” tweeted X user Juan Santana. “Would you do a similar joke with other religions’ leaders? Shocked. I was hoping both @realDonaldTrump and @WhiteHouse had been hacked, but it seems not.” Yet other MAGA Catholics appeared to double down on their support. “Nope!!! Didn’t lose me!!! I LOVE the humor and trolling @potus does of all the Libtards and Democrats!!!!” wrote a commentator. Another X commentator added, “It’s a joke. It is not even an offensive joke, and I’m Catholic.” Source link #MAGA #Melts #Trumps #Disrespectful #Pope #Post Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

After a news report claimed that Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) was looking to replace CEO Elon Musk, a longtime Tesla bull dismissed the idea, calling the likelihood of such a move extremely low. What Happened: On Thursday night, Gary ******, the managing partner at The Future Fund LLC, and a Tesla bull for years, addressed speculation about Musk’s potential ouster in a post on X, dismissing concerns regarding the board seeking his replacement. In his post, ****** said if Musk stepped down as CEO but stayed on as a Chief Technology Officer or a Chief Product Officer, Tesla’s stock could drop 5% to 10%. A complete departure, he warned, could trigger a 20% to 25% decline, wiping out nearly $220 billion in shareholder value. The noted fund manager posted this on X, with screenshots of Benzinga’s report on Musk’s possible replacements based on prediction markets. The post came just hours after Musk himself addressed the rumors, blasting The Wall Street Journal’s report as an “extremely bad breach of ethics” and a “deliberately false article.” See Also: Maximize saving for your retirement and cut down on taxes: Schedule your free call with a financial advisor to start your financial journey – no cost, no obligation. 7. Scheffler’s eight-shot lead keeps rivals in the dark Scheffler’s eight-shot lead keeps rivals in the dark Scottie Scheffler’s comfortable lead at his home-town CJ Cup Byron Nelson was the same late in the third round as it was at the start, even without the dominance the top-ranked player showed over the first 36 holes. Then he found that form again, and made a big lead even ******* at 23 under while finishing after sunset on Saturday (Sunday AEST). Scheffler has an eight-shot lead after a five-under 66 capped by birdies on three of the final five holes – the last on the par-5 18th more than 13 hours after the day began with about half the field needing to complete the weather-delayed second round, including 18 players who hadn’t even started. Erik von Rooyen (65), Adam Schenk (65) and Ricky Castillo (67) are 15 under, with Kurt Kitiyama (68) and Jhonattan Vegas (67) another shot back. Karl Vilips is the leading ***********, tied for 46th place at seven under, 16 shots behind Scheffler. Vilips opened the tournament with a dazzling six-under 65, followed by a one-over 72, then a two-under 69 in the third round. Compatriot Cam Davis is five under for the tournament sharing 61st place, after rounds of 69, 67 and 72. Scheffler had his first two bogeys of the tournament and was two under for the day through 13 holes after missing the PGA Tour record for the lowest 36-hole score by one shot at 124 (18 under). His six-shot lead after two rounds was a Nelson record. At the short par-4 14th, Scheffler drove the green before settling for a tap-in birdie, then put his tee shot at the long par-3 15th inside four feet for another birdie. The ***** for darkness had already sounded after Scheffler, Castillo and Sam Stevens teed off on 18 when the group in front was still in the fairway but cleared them to hit to try to save time. Scheffler couldn’t see his second shot from the rough after impact, but it reached the green. He two-putted from 31 feet for the biggest 54-hole lead on the PGA Tour since Rory McIroy also led by eight on the way to winning the 2011 US Open. “I saw it take off the way I wanted it to,” Scheffler said of his approach on 18. “But after that I couldn’t see that far. Really, I’d say the most challenging part was reading a green.” Van Rooyen was in the rough beside the green on 18 in two shots and looking for another birdie that would have matched the low around of the day, only to need four strokes from there for a bogey. Schenk, who had missed six consecutive cuts coming into the Nelson, also carded a 65 at the TPC Craig Ranch course in the Dallas suburbs. Stevens started the day alone in second behind Scheffler, and was the only remaining player without a bogey when he had four in a five-hole stretch. The native of nearby Fort Worth was among five players at 13 under after a 70. That group included Antoine Rozner, who had the low around of the day at 63. Then, 4 Days Later, He Lands in Jail James Farthing and his mom won the $167.3 million Powerball jackpot, the largest lottery prize in Kentucky history, on April 26 Four days later, Farthing allegedly got into a fight at a Florida hotel and kicked a deputy who attempted to break it up Farthing now faces several charges, including a felony count of battery on a law enforcement officer A Kentucky man was over the moon after winning the biggest lottery prize in the state’s history. But four days later, he was behind bars. On the night of Saturday, April 26, James Farthing learned that his $2 Powerball ticket that he bought his mom was a winner, and the duo had won a $167.3 million jackpot, the largest lottery prize in the history of Kentucky, according to the Kentucky Lottery. Along with his mom, Linda Grizzle, Farthing, 50, collected the prize — and posed for photos with a giant check — on Monday, April 28, with the Georgetown native telling the Kentucky Lottery that “it’s going to be a good Mother’s Day.” He also shared plans to “pay off my debt.” Grizzle was shocked, telling the company she “would have never dreamed” of winning the historic prize and saying that it still “hasn’t sunken in yet.” However, the mother-son duo’s celebration was short-lived. Days later, on Wednesday, April 30, Farthing was arrested. Pinellas County Jail James Farthing’s mug shot The newly minted lottery winner was at a hotel out of state on April 30, when an altercation broke out, leading a deputy with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office to arrest him, according to police records obtained by Kentucky outlet WKYT, Louisiana Fox affiliate WVUE-DT and USA Today. The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Saturday, May 3. According to USA Today, Farthing was at the TradeWinds Resort in St. Pete Beach, Fla., when a fight broke out, and Farthing allegedly punched another patron in the face. Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Sign up for PEOPLE’s free True Crime newsletter for breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases. Meanwhile, his girlfriend was allegedly also trying to fight guests of the hotel, per USA Today. She “appeared very intoxicated,” the affidavit said, “and was yelling, screaming and making incoherent statements.” After the Pinellas County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to break up the altercation, Farthing allegedly kicked him in the face, USA Today reported. Following the alleged kick — which caused swelling and redness in the deputy’s face, per an arrest affidavit — he allegedly attempted to resist arrest by fleeing the hotel, but was apprehended, the outlet reported. Farthing was booked into jail on April 30 and charged with one felony count of battery on a law enforcement officer and two misdemeanor counts of battery and resisting an officer, as well as a parole violation, according to court records viewed by PEOPLE. His girlfriend, whose identity has not been shared publicly, was also charged and now faces one misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct, according to USA Today. It is not immediately clear if Farthing or his girlfriend have obtained legal representation to comment on their behalf. According to WKYT, Farthing was on parole through August 2024 for a series of charges in Kentucky. His past convictions include drug- and theft-related charges, as well as tampering with evidence and engaging in organized crime, the outlet reported. 11. ‘air-dried’ priest was embalmed via ******* ‘air-dried’ priest was embalmed via ******* The mystery of a mummy from an Austrian village has been solved, according to researchers who say it was embalmed in an unexpected way – via the *******. Intrigue had long swirled around the mummified body stored in the church crypt of St Thomas am Blasenstein. The remains were rumoured to be the naturally preserved corpse of an aristocratic vicar, Franz Xaver Sidler von Rosenegg, who died in 1746 at the aged of 37, gaining the mummy the moniker of the “air-dried chaplain”. Now experts say they have discovered the body was embalmed with the abdominal and pelvic cavities packed with wood chips, fragmented twigs, fabrics such as hemp and silk, and zinc chloride – materials that would have absorbed fluids inside the body. Dr Andreas Nerlich, a pathologist at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich in Germany and first author of the study, said the discovery was a surprise as there was no external evidence for such a process. “The body wall was not opened – therefore the only entrance possible was the *******,” he said, noting this was very different from previously known methods of embalming, including those from ancient Egypt. Writing in the journal Frontiers in Medicine, Nerlich and colleagues reported how the mummy had previously been externally examined by experts and studied via X-rays among other investigations. While the X-rays did not detect the internal stuffing, they did reveal a round structure inside the mummy’s left lower bowel – leading to rumours that the individual had died after swallowing a poisonous capsule. During a recent renovation of the crypt, Nerlich and colleagues gained approval to carry out a partial autopsy, CT scans and other analyses. The researchers discovered the mummy – which has a well-preserved upper body, but decay to the face, lower legs and feet – is that of a man, most likely between 35 and 45 years of age, with radiocarbon dating of a skin sample suggesting he died between 1734 and 1780. The team note these insights fit with what is know about Sidler, adding that an analysis of bone, tooth and skin samples revealed the man’s diet was consistent with that of a local parish vicar in the region, being rich in animal products and central European grain varieties. As expected for a man of the cloth who had an easy life, the skeleton showed no signs of stress – while the corpse showed evidence of long-term pipe-smoking and bunions. “Both wearing pointy shoes and smoking [a] pipe are very typical for a priest at that time,” said Nerlich. As for the “poisonous capsule”, the researchers discovered the object was a single glass bead – similar to those used for rosaries – that may have entered the body as a decoration on the fabric used for stuffing. Sidler’s cause of death, the team added, was most likely severe bleeding into the lungs as a result of tuberculosis, with the body showing signs of the disease. Yet why Sidler was embalmed remains unclear. While the team said the evidence suggests it was carried out to avoid the spread of infection by miasma – or “bad air” – Nerlich said another potential explanation was that Sidler was preserved for transport to his home monastery of Waldhausen. And he may not have been the only one to receive such treatment. “This is the first case with this type of documented embalming,” Nerlich said. “So we have no idea how often or where this has been performed, although we assume that this type of ‘short-term preservation’ was used much more often than we might expect from this single case.” Source link #airdried #priest #embalmed #******* Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  13. Tarryn Thomas set to be charged by police after allegedly caught in possession of drugs Tarryn Thomas set to be charged by police after allegedly caught in possession of drugs Former AFL player Tarryn Thomas is expected to be charged on summons after he was allegedly caught in possession of drugs over the weekend. Police searched Thomas’ Lamborghini after they found him parked in a no standing zone. 7NEWS chief AFL reporter Mitch Cleary revealed details of the alleged incident that happened in the Melbourne CBD. “Tarryn Thomas and another man were allegedly caught in possession of drugs and deal bags in the CBD of Melbourne,” he said on Sunday Footy Feast. “In a statement to 7NEWS, police have confirmed a 24-year-old Thomastown man and a 25-year-old Ormond man are both expected to be charged on summons. “This came after a Lamborghini that both males were in, were spotted in a no-standing zone. “Officers then executed a search on that vehicle where they found the drugs and the deal bags.” The incident comes three weeks after Thomas was allegedly held hostage at gunpoint over a car deal gone wrong in Ballarat. Thomas remains in the football wilderness after a controversial end to his AFL career. He had been ineligible to play football at any level after the integrity unit last year found he had engaged in multiple acts of misconduct, including threatening a woman in direct messages. He was suspended for 18 matches and subsequently axed by North Melbourne. In November, Thomas walked free from court on a good behaviour bond, avoiding a criminal conviction after police dropped a charge of using a telecommunications service to harass a woman. Earlier this year, the AFL said Thomas was eligible for a state-league return after showing a “consistent change in his behaviour” and completing an education and behavioural change program. Despite spending time at different clubs around the country, no VFL or WAFL club signed him. He is not permitted to enter the 2025 AFL mid-season draft, while no decision has been made on whether he can return to the top level next year. Thomas, who was taken with pick No.8 in the 2018 AFL draft, played 69 games for the Kangaroos. (WIAT) — President Donald Trump’s commencement speech at the University of Alabama brought the Class of 2025 to its feet Thursday night. Soon-to-be graduates Ryann Levendusky, Hayley Gonzalez and Gracie Fortson made sure they were there to see it for themselves. “We thought it was a once in a lifetime experience like it’s not every day you can just go watch the President of the United States at your college campus. So, it’s like kind of unbelievable that he was here to celebrate our graduation and everything,” Fortson said. Those in the audience, many of whom were made up of UA graduates themselves, made sure to see to see Trump in person for the first time. “Anytime I have the opportunity to see the president speak I’m going to come out and see it. I know he had some wisdom to share with all the graduating students so we got to hear that,” alumnus Daniel Adkins said. Trump’s words, where he encouraged graduates not to “waste their youth” but to “fight,” particularly touched students like Liam McIntyre and Charlie Leahy, who said they’re walking away feeling confident about post-graduation. “What he said tonight just leaves me with excitement for the future and what I can bring to this country,” Leahy said. Students said they plan to implement Trump’s words of encouragement into their own lives. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. 19. Katy Perry: From Blue Origin flight to ‘cringe’ dance moves Katy Perry: From Blue Origin flight to ‘cringe’ dance moves Getty Images Earlier this week American singer Katy Perry, best known for her bubblegum pop, said she felt like a “human Piñata” after weeks of online backlash. The description felt suitably colourful – but the acknowledgement was serious. A decade on from headlining the Superbowl, Perry’s part in a much-derided Blue Origin spaceflight has seen her star ****** down to Earth. Mockery over the apparent worthiness of her reaction, including kissing the ground after landing and saying she felt “so connected to love”, spread online. Fast food chain Wendy’s even posted to ask: “Can we send her back?” Trolls have now taken aim at her world tour, which began in Mexico on 23 April, criticising her dance moves and performances. It seems the star who first broke through singing about a boyfriend’s mood swings now faces an icy reception. Perry’s blamed an “unhinged and unhealed” internet – but is toxic social media the only reason? ‘A pattern of failed reinvention’ The music writer Michael Cragg, author of Reach for the Stars, believes Perry’s problem is that she’s stuck between pop cultures and feels increasingly out of touch. “Her pop star persona was cemented in the 2010s as cartoon-y, fun and playful, all whipped cream bras and goofy videos where she wore oversized braces on her teeth,” he says. For a ******* this worked. Her second album Teenage Dream, which doubled down on Perry’s staple cheeky, sexualised girl-next-door image, scored five Billboard number one singles to match a record set by Michael Jackson. Its follow-up, 2013’s Prism, bore transatlantic smash single Roar (her fourth solo *** number one), as well as Dark Horse in the US (her ninth domestically). Perry hasn’t topped charts under her own steam since. “That was a long time ago in pop terms and it feels like she hasn’t evolved,” adds Cragg. After landing back on Earth, Perry said she felt “super connected to life” and “so connected to love” In the past year, her comeback single Woman’s World, touted as a female empowerment anthem, struck critics as lyrically shallow. Some fans also seemed unimpressed that it was produced by Dr. Luke, who previously faced ******* assault allegations from the singer Kesha. The producer denied the claims and the pair reached an agreement to settle a defamation lawsuit in 2023, but Perry remained tainted by association. The track failed to land in the top 50 in the US and only just managed in the ***, at 47. “Her sort of spiritual ‘let love lead the way’ messages she posts don’t really hold sway with very online pop fans in the face of that decision,” says Cragg. “The regressive girl boss feel of Woman’s World, and then the album not being great hasn’t helped,” he adds, pointing to rapper Doja Cat’s success working with Dr. Luke without the same negative response. It followed a pattern of failed reinvention attempts stretching back to 2017’s Witness, where Perry attempted to launch her socially conscious “purposeful pop” era. But its Sia-written lead single Chained to the Rhythm, which boldly attacked mindless pop culture, appeared to be undermined by Bon Appetit, a song openly objectifying Perry as a ******* meal. The ‘pop girlie’ has changedGetty Images Chappell Roan had a stratospheric 2024, with fans drawn to her online authenticity. This included speaking out against toxic fans who fail to respect boundaries Perry’s first hit I Kissed A Girl caused controversy for the fetishisation of lesbians even back in 2008 when it was released. But today Roan’s had global success telling her genuine ****** awakening. “The flip flopping has jarred in an era where… very defined pop star personas are the ones cutting through,” argues Cragg. Perry’s 2021-2023 playground-styled Las Vegas residency embraced her surreal, fantastical image to commercial and critical success. But it’s not translating to a new generation of fans. “I think ultimately people see her as a bit cringeworthy now,” Cragg adds. “Being shot into space on a billionaire’s jolly while everyone watches that on social media platforms interspersed with war and the climate crisis… just feels tonally not ideal,” he says. Perry may have misjudged the public mood, but at the same time, the venom in the blowback points to deeper issues in pop culture beyond her control. There is no doubt that the social media landscape has become more frenzied in recent years, with stars like Roan speaking against toxic fandoms. Simon Diego, the creator of Brazil’s Portal Katy Perry fan community, described the scale of the abuse towards the 40-year-old as “unbelievable”. The group showed their support by clubbing together with other fan pages to pay for a digital billboard message in New York’s Times Square for 24 hours. “We’re so proud of you and your magical journey and we love you to the moon and back,” it read. “Know that you are safe, seen and celebrated. We’ll see you around the world, this is just the beginning.” It was this that Perry replied to directly with her Piñata remark acknowledging the backlash. Accept and continue “I think Katy and many other celebrities are feeling unsafe in the one space that used to connect them to fans,” Diego tells BBC News. He believes that’s why Perry has never posted photos of her daughter’s face online. But even that boundary was ignored in the wake of the spaceflight criticism, as commenters began targeting her four-year-old child simply because “it’s cool now”, he says. “They don’t understand how bad it could affect her.” Others, like Marie Claire Australia editor Georgie McCourt, think pervasive misogyny plays a part. “There’s a particular ire reserved for women like Perry: ambitious, unapologetic, hyper-visible,” she wrote in a column, noting that male celebrities have already gone into space without such surveillant reaction. So where next for Perry? Cragg says a hit single would help. “I’m not saying it will return her to the commercial highs of old, because that ship has sailed for a lot of pre-streaming artists, but it will steady the ship.” Source link #Katy #Perry #Blue #Origin #flight #cringe #dance #moves Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

The teenager was running the other way to the former Demons captain and missed the ball with his spoil, catching Viney high which gave away a 50m penalty and resulted in a goal. Viney was shaken up by the incident but played out the rest of the match. “I haven’t looked at it again on tape, but I saw it live,” Eagles coach Andrew McQualter said. “Vines played out the game which is usually an indication that it will be OK.” Camera IconWest Coast debutant Bo Allan will sweat on the MRO. 24. California Supreme Court orders state bar to revert to national exams after testing debacle California Supreme Court orders state bar to revert to national exams after testing debacle The California Supreme Court on Friday lowered the passing score on the State Bar of California’s botched February exam and ordered the agency to ditch its new multiple-choice questions in July and revert to the traditional test format. “The Court remains concerned over the processes used to draft those questions, including the previously undisclosed use of artificial intelligence,” the state’s highest court said in a Friday order. “In light of the particular issues encountered February,” the court lowered the total raw passing score for general bar exam takers to 534 points or higher on the essay, performance test and multiple-choice questions. The order came just hours after the State Bar of California announced that its embattled leader, who has faced growing pressure to resign after the exam debacle, will step down in July. Leah T. Wilson, the agency’s executive director, informed the Board of Trustees she will not seek another term in the position she has held on and off since 2017. She also apologized for her role in the February bar exam chaos. “Accountability is a bedrock principle for any leader,” Wilson said in a statement. “At the end of the day, I am responsible for everything that occurs within the organization. Despite our best intentions, the experiences of applicants for the February Bar Exam simply were unacceptable, and I fully recognize the frustration and stress this experience caused. While there are no words to assuage those emotions, I do sincerely apologize.” Wilson’s last day will be July 7. Many February test takers urged Wilson to resign after the exam, which critics say was rolled out hastily in a bid to save money and ultimately plagued by technical glitches and irregularities. Last week, further controversy erupted when it became clear that the state bar had not been transparent about the use of artificial intelligence to develop multiple-choice questions. Read more: State Bar of California admits it used AI to develop exam questions, triggering new furor The news of Wilson‘s departure came on the day that thousands of February test takers were scheduled to get their exam results. But the results appear to have been delayed after the state bar was late filing a petition with the California Supreme Court on scoring adjustments for the exam that also responded to the court’s questions about how and why it used AI to develop multiple-choice questions. The state bar filed a petition to the Supreme Court on Tuesday — and test takers remain in limbo, unsure when they will learn if they passed or failed. Since the debacle, Sen. Tom Umberg (D-Orange), chair of the state Senate Judiciary Committee, and many legal experts have called on the state bar to ditch the new questions and revert to the traditional test format in July — at least until new questions and methods are adequately tested. Read more: Pressure grows on State Bar of California to revert to national exam format in July after botched exam On April 25, deans at more than a dozen California’s American Bar Assn.-accredited law schools wrote to Patricia Guerrero, chief justice of the California Supreme Court, expressing “serious concerns about the exam’s fairness and validity.” The deans urged the court to release all 200 multiple-choice questions that were on the February exam and return to using the NCBE’s Multistate Bar Examination for the multiple-choice portion of the next exam. Wilson, however, signaled Friday that California should push ahead with its own bar exam. “As the fourth largest economy in the world, it is only right that California develops its own bar exam, and that ultimately that exam reflect the innovation, excellence, equity, and accessibility principles that are central to who we are as Californians,” she said in a statement. “We will not get there by turning backward.” Wilson first took on the role of executive director in 2017, but exited briefly to work for a consulting firm before returning in 2021. She faced additional scrutiny for her income — she earned an annual 2023 salary of $362,067, plus $59,968 in bonuses — at a time when the state bar is struggling financially. “Stagnating revenue and increasing personnel costs,” California’s state auditor said in a recent report, “have led its general fund to a deficit in four of the last five years.” Still, Wilson said she was proud of her time at the helm of the state bar, citing her efforts to make the organization an “exceptional workplace” that resulted in “strong staff engagement, positive union relationships and historically low turnover.” “Over the course of nearly 10 years, I have had the privilege of leading the State Bar through a ******* of transformative change,” Wilson said in a statement. “I am particularly proud of our efforts to elevate and offer real solutions to the access-to-justice crisis in our state, make real our commitments to increasing equity and inclusion in the profession, and stabilizing the State Bar financially,” Wilson added. Brandon Stallings, chair of the state bar’s Board of Trustees, praised Wilson’s leadership, noting she had played a key role in advancing many of the organization’s critical initiatives. “The Board recognizes the significant contributions that Leah Wilson made during her tenure, particularly in the concerted effort to recognize and address racial disparities in the discipline system,” Stallings said. “We understand and respect her decision, and we are grateful for her service.” Sign up for Essential California for news, features and recommendations from the L.A.
