Madrid Open: Aryna Sabalenka beats Coco Gauff in thriller

Madrid Open: Aryna Sabalenka beats Coco Gauff in thriller Madrid Open: Aryna Sabalenka beats Coco Gauff in thriller Aryna Sabalenka overcame a spirited fightback from Coco Gauff to claim her third Madrid Open title with a thrilling 6-3 7-6 (7-3) win. World number one Sabalenka dominated the opening set but squandered a championship point in a fluctuating second set as Gauff forced a tie-break. There was still little to separate them as Gauff recovered from 3-0 to make it 3-3 but a double fault gave 26-year-old Sabalenka the victory. Both came into the final confidently, with Belarusian Sabalenka as the world’s best and Gauff coming off the back of her stunning semi-final win over Iga Swiatek. Sabalenka made a flying start, which included 17 points won in a row, but Gauff’s brave recovery saw her take a 5-3 lead in the second set. The 21-year-old American then saved six break points to thwart Sabalenka’s comeback after she had made it 5-5. But Sabalenka held her nerve under pressure in her sixth final of 2025 so far, adding the Madrid title to her wins in Brisbane and Miami. Voice of America Reporters Are Set to Return to Work Voice of America Reporters Are Set to Return to Work Voice of America, which for eight decades brought news to corners of the globe where reliable journalism was scarce, went dark in March after the Trump administration cut its funding and put its workers on leave. But next week, journalists for the organization, a U.S.-funded international news broadcaster, are set to return to work, its director said, after it won a court victory last month restoring its funding. The director, Mike Abramowitz, said in an email to his staff on Friday that the Justice Department had alerted Voice of America that the broadcaster’s access to its computer systems was being restored. The email was obtained by The New York Times. “I am seeking further details, and I will share them as soon as possible,” Mr. Abramowitz wrote. “But on the face of it, this news is a positive development.” Voice of America, founded in 1942 to combat Nazi propaganda, was broadcasting in 49 languages to an estimated 360 million people around the world before President Trump moved to mute its airwaves. The broadcaster had long been seen as a vital tool in America’s efforts to promote democracy globally, and it transmitted news into countries such as Russia and Iran, where press freedoms were limited. Mr. Trump has accused Voice of America of being biased against him and branded it the “voice of radical America.” He issued an executive order in mid-March to dismantle the U.S. Agency for Global Media, the congressionally chartered agency that funds Voice of America and other government-supported international news outlets. The order targeted parts of the federal bureaucracy that the president had determined to be “unnecessary,” it said. Almost immediately, Voice of America’s roughly 1,300 workers were sent home. The network’s radio transmitters were cut, and its wire services were terminated. A battle in the courts followed, with Voice of America and other federally funded news outlets arguing that Mr. Trump lacked the power to withdraw funding that had been authorized by Congress. Last week, Royce C. Lamberth, a federal judge in Washington, D.C., who was appointed by former President Ronald Reagan, agreed. He issued a temporary order requiring the administration to restore funding for Voice of America. The administration appealed the ruling. The issue remains unsettled. A federal appeals court has left in place the ruling requiring the administration to allow Voice of America to resume its news programming. But the appeals court said that the administration could continue, for now, to withhold funding from three broadcasters under the umbrella of the Agency for Global Media: Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Radio Free Asia and Middle East Broadcasting Networks. Voice of America is a government entity, unlike the other three broadcasters, which are federally funded private nonprofits. Mr. Trump has installed one of his loyalists, Kari Lake, a former news anchor and Senate candidate from Arizona, to advise the Agency for Global Media. In an email on Saturday, Ms. Lake said that she had always intended to “bring V.O.A. into the 21st century.” She added that “frivolous litigation” had slowed her efforts to “streamline” Voice of America, but that she looked forward to “effectively telling America’s story to a worldwide audience.” In court papers, journalists for Voice of America said the Trump administration had engaged in the “wholesale” dismantling of the broadcaster by “ordering virtually the entire staff not to report to work, turning off the service and locking the agency’s doors.” On Friday evening, Voice of America’s lawyers received the email from the Justice Department indicating that the government was following Judge Lamberth’s order, Mr. Abramowitz told his staff. Astronomers Have Found a Prime Candidate for the Elusive Planet 9 Astronomers Have Found a Prime Candidate for the Elusive Planet 9 Scientists examined infrared space surveys to narrow down candidates for Planet 9. Planet 9 would be so far from the Sun that it is just not illuminated by much sunlight. The two space surveys, conducted 23 years apart, could show how a secret planet orbits. Since the demotion of Pluto to dwarf planet, there’s been a ninth-planet-shaped hole in the hearts of many Earthlings. How will we remember what My Very Excellent Mother Just Served Us now? Well, if we’re lucky, we may soon be able to fill that gap. For some time now, scientists have wondered if a regular planet—not a dwarf planet—could explain some of the clustering of objects in the Kuiper Belt that starts at Neptune and extends outward from our Solar System. (Pluto is considered a Kuiper Belt object.) This hypothetical Planet 9 has never been directly observed and remains theoretical, but in new research uploaded to the preprint site arXiV, scientists share a very educated guess about the location of the long-theorized celestial body. (This study is not yet peer reviewed, but it follows a presentation from a 2024 conference and is listed as “Accepted for publication in Publications of the Astronomical Society of Australia (PASA).”) To search for Planet 9, the scientists “search[ed] for objects that moved slowly between IRAS and AKARI detections.” IRAS and AKARI are far-infrared, all-sky surveys completed 23 years apart. Though Planet 9 has never been confirmed, we know a lot about what a planet in its suspected area could be like. The team used qualities like this—such as a very long orbit around the Sun, feasible temperatures, and probable masses—to narrow down the IRAS dataset and the AKARI dataset separately. They then highlighted 13 total bodies that fit the criteria and showed up in both datasets, accounting for changes in epochs and positions in orbit. From there, they inspected the surveys’ images and found one eligible bachelor… er, planet. The scientists are careful to explain that the criteria they chose would not necessarily identify the only possible candidates for Planet 9. For instance, if Planet 9 is over the size constraints they placed on their study, it’s still likely to be picked up at some point by infrared surveys like this. It could also be a gas giant-type planet on par with or larger than Neptune. But if it’s smaller, it’s likely below the threshold of observability at such a long range. And long range is, honestly, underselling it—top theories for the positioning of Planet 9 place it around 400 astronomical units (AU). The furthest known planet, Neptune, is only about 31 AU. That’s already 31 times further than Earth is from the Sun, creating an orbit that lasts about 165 years. Planet 9 would also have an irregular orbit, scientists believe, so it would spent part of its cycle even further away. This is why two surveys conducted 23 years apart may just be the perfect way to observe Planet 9. In that amount of time, the planet itself will have completed just a tiny fraction of its overall orbit—enough to travel from one spot into the adjacent spot on the subsequent survey. But a lot of other factors would need to line up exactly in order for this candidate to be the real Planet 9, and the scientists are transparent about that. “The finalist of our Planet Nine candidate pair strongly depends on how the characteristics of Planet Nine are defined. f the actual mass of Planet Nine is not sufficient to make its flux above the detection limits of two surveys, there is no chance of finding Planet Nine in this work.” This group took a stab at observing Planet 9 using the IRAS and AKARI infrared surveys, which can “see” further than telescopes using the visible spectrum. And indeed, while the odds of actually finding the elusive planet here may be more like the odds of buying a winning lottery ticket, the work opens several next steps for other teams investigating Planet 9. The data may also help narrow down parameters for those using other tools. “If the existence of Planet Nine can be confirmed by observations in the near future, it will improve our understanding of the history and structure of the entire Solar System in early stages,” the team concludes. And it would get Pluto yet another big sibling. Todd Howard Is Getting Crucified Over His Elder Scrolls 6 Comment Todd Howard Is Getting Crucified Over His Elder Scrolls 6 Comment In the last couple of weeks, Bethesda and its director, Todd Howard, have managed to make waves in the gaming sphere after a series of failures. The heavily rumored Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered finally dropped, and it proved to be a smash hit that respects the classic. On top of that, Howard confirmed that Elder Scrolls 6 is currently in development. It’s not a headline but a statement that proves Bethesda’s silence on the project doesn’t mean that it has been shelved or pushed back. However, the gaming community’s trust in Howard is still at an absolute low. Rather than patiently waiting for Elder Scrolls 6, they’re memeing Howard down for a history of broken promises and overhyped reveals that simply don’t meet expectations. Will Elder Scrolls 6 be another victim of broken promises? There’s no denying that Howard is a genius, and without him, we would’ve never seen iconic RPGs such as Morrowind, Oblivion, and, of course, Skyrim. However, he’s also known for overpromising and never delivering on his words. Let’s not forget how his “it just works” for Fallout 4 turned out to be. With every Bethesda RPG, Howard has promised to elevate the role-playing mechanics by focusing on various aspects, such as skill trees. However, that never happens, as somehow, Bethesda decides to dumb down on role-playing depth. Over on r/ElderScrolls, fans are busily memeing Howard’s promises and believe that Elder Scrolls 6 is likely to follow the same pattern. It’s mind-boggling how Bethesda keeps making RPG mechanics more generic. In games such as Oblivion, we’ve seen how Howard and his team can deliver an immersive and rewarding progression system. Every action directly contributes to overall skill growth, making every advancement feel impactful. However, that wasn’t the case with Skyrim or even Fallout 4. Basic skills in these games were broken down into perks that brought slight advantages. Seriously, where is the so-called role-playing depth here? Can Todd Howard deliver on his promises for once? (Image via Bethesda Game Studios) Howard’s going to assure fans once again that Elder Scrolls 6 will be the pinnacle of role-playing mechanics when the game is eventually revealed. Unless Bethesda goes back to its roots and brings more layered systems, the game will prove to be a victim of Howard’s sweet little lies. Elder Scrolls 6 must take notes from Oblivion Elder Scrolls 6 should bring more emotionally impactful NPCs. (Image via Bethesda Game Studios) Another crucial aspect of role-playing in any game is the NPCs that add to the in-game world and lore. In the Elder Scrolls franchise, the heart and soul of the games are their NPCs, and they play a crucial role in building the world of Tamriel. As seen in the recently released Oblivion Remastered, NPCs such as Martin Septim, Jauffre, and Baurus prove to be pivotal in making the game’s storyline more engaging. If it weren’t for Martin, in particular, who forms a deep bond with Hero of Kvatch, players wouldn’t have been invested in the game’s narrative. Unfortunately, Skyrim couldn’t replicate the NPC magic of Oblivion seen with characters such as Martin. The closest Skyrim gets to bringing a genuine friendship is with Paarthurnax, and even that connection feels restricted. Other characters, such as Esbern, Blades, and Delphine, might serve as allies, but their loyalty is conditional. Howard needs to make sure that Elder Scrolls 6 doesn’t repeat Skyrim‘s mistake and includes at least an emotional anchor for the game’s storyline. This can go a long way towards making players heavily interested in the narrative. With that said, how do you think Bethesda can improve the role-playing depth in Elder Scrolls 6? Let us know in the comments below. Source link #Todd #Howard #Crucified #Elder #Scrolls #Comment Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Nat Locke: How some self-tumbling boots got me thinking back about my own alarming recall experience Nat Locke: How some self-tumbling boots got me thinking back about my own alarming recall experience I saw one of those product recalls the other day, and it struck fear into my very heart because the fault in question caused people to fall over. It was a particular pair of hiking boots that had a fundamental flaw. Some bright spark had popped a hook at the top of the laces, presumably to keep the laces in place, but for some people, this hook would actually catch on the laces of the boot on the other foot, resulting in general tumbling over. It’s a tough way to appreciate the power of gravity. Now, I’ve done a bit of hiking in my time, and these boots would definitely add to the degree of difficulty. The last thing I need is my footwear plotting my demise when I’m plodding along a rough track up a big hill. And mark my words, there is absolutely no doubt that I would have been the first person to fall over in them. The weird thing is that I never would have thought to blame the boots, though. I would’ve blamed my own stupendous clumsiness because as you all well know, I have considerable form in this department. My extensive back catalogue of fallings over suggests that if I was to go within ten feet (pardon the pun) of these particular hiking boots, I would’ve been on crutches within milliseconds. I broke my ankle at the staff Christmas party while dressed as Dennis Lillee, remember. Happily, I was unaffected by this particular product recall. But there was a time when I was one of the first people to report a fault that eventually led to a recall, so basically, I think we can all agree I’m a significant historical figure. It’s a story that goes back a few years, but it involved my car. It was a great car, but started to develop a habit whereby it just stopped going. Obviously, this a fairly fundamental flaw when it comes to the baseline expectations of a vehicle, given that they are certainly more useful if they do, in fact, go. And it wasn’t that it didn’t start (that was a different car). What I experienced was that while happily driving along, it would just suddenly stop. All the lights on the dashboard would come on and the engine would die. At first it happened as I was slowing down to go around corners. So I figured the answer was just not to slow down around corners. I’m quite the problem-solver. And then it would happen at any time. It was the car equivalent of that golden retriever who just lies down because it doesn’t want to go home from the park. So I took it to a mechanic because I am a responsible car owner, and the mechanic nodded at me sagely and tinkered around for a bit. Then he took it for a test drive, declared it fixed and charged me $1800. And we all lived happily ever after. Just kidding. Then it happened again while I was doing 80 km/h in the tunnel. For a brief moment, I was the reason the tunnel caution lights started flashing. Thanks to the people who tooted at me, by the way. That was a really helpful addition to my predicament. Because of course I just stopped in the tunnel as a hilarious prank on my fellow motorists. Insert eye roll here. The antidote in these sorts of alarming situations was pretty technical. I had to wait a bit, then press the button to restart the car. Yes, my car was literally turning itself off and then I would turn it on again. It’s the IT department’s cure all. Ultimately, I took it back to the dealer who seemed as surprised as I was, but they held onto it for a while and investigated fully, and eventually fixed it for me at their expense. Don’t we all love a happy ending? A while later, I read a news story about how this particular model of car was being recalled because it had a fault whereby it would just stop working. Oh my God, I thought. Was I the first? I’ll never know and they haven’t sent me a plaque, so I guess it doesn’t count as a noteworthy achievement. But I’d like to get together with the first person to trip over their own feet in those hiking boots. We’ve got a lot in common. Florida Study Finds Nearly All State Alligator Attacks Have the Same Cause, and it’s Not the Gators Florida Study Finds Nearly All State Alligator Attacks Have the Same Cause, and it’s Not the Gators A new study reveals why nearly all Florida alligator attacks occur. The University of Florida and Centre College in Kentucky released a study on Wednesday, April 16, that found humans cause the vast majority of alligator attacks across the state. Although rare, there have been nearly 500 attacks since 1948, and of those, 27 people were killed and 339 were major incidents, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. However, the attacks typically derive from “risky human behavior, not aggression by alligators,” per the study. Usually, those bites occur when humans are swimming in the alligators’ known habitat. “In contrast, low and no-risk behaviors, like walking near water or simply being present on land, rarely resulted in attacks,” the study said. Related: Woman Hospitalized After Being Bitten by Alligator While Kayaking in Florida: Reports Researchers also report that the alligators “aren’t seeking conflict.” Instead, they react to “attractive stimulus,” which is when humans are splashing, swimming or entering alligator habitats. “The takeaway from this study is that many bites can be prevented if humans are aware of their surroundings and minimize risky behaviors, such as walking small pets near bodies of water or swimming where alligators are known to be present,” UF professor of wildlife ecology Frank Mazzotti said. STAN HONDA/AFP via Getty An alligator floats in a creek on February 23, 2011 at Kennedy Space Center in Florida Mazzotti also explained that typically, when the alligator that was responsible for the bite is identified, it is euthanized, “losing its life because of risky human behavior.” An increase in awareness will keep humans safe and save alligator lives, too. “Ultimately, the study underscores that situational awareness and informed choices, especially during recreational activities in alligator country, can help protect both people and wildlife,” said Mazzotti. Moving forward, the study advises wildlife managers to embrace diverse and targeted communication strategies to facilitate safe behavior around alligators. Bayern and Kane forced to wait for title celebrations Bayern and Kane forced to wait for title celebrations England’s nearly-man Harry Kane was about to start celebrating his first career title. Then Yussuf Poulsen scored in the fourth minute of stoppage time for Leipzig to draw with Bayern Munich 3-3 and postpone the Bundesliga leaders’ expected title party on Saturday. “I fully feel like a champion, just we’re not yet,” Bayern veteran Thomas Muller said. Bayern are now all but certain to win the championship. Bayer Leverkusen can still mathematically catch the Bavarian serial winners and defend their title, but they’ll have to win their remaining three games while making up a goal difference of 30 goals. And even then in that fantasy world, Bayern would still have to lose their final two matches. Kane has, famously, been forced to wait for a first major trophy after a career of near-misses and disappointments. The 31-year-old had to watch his teammates play without him as he was suspended against Leipzig because of an accumulation of yellow cards. Leipzig made the better start and deservedly led at halftime thanks to goals from Benjamin Sesko and Lukas Klostermann, leaving the watching Kane sitting stone-faced in the stands. Bayern coach Vincent Kompany evidently found the right words during the break. Kane’s former Spurs teammate Eric Dier pulled one back with a header from Michael Olise’s corner in the 62nd minute, and Olise himself equalised a minute later after the home team’s sloppy play from the restart. Leipzig goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt denied Leroy Sane and Leon Goretzka, and Konrad Laimer headed over against his former side as Bayern created a host of chances as the rain streamed down. Sane then finally made one count with a fierce shot inside the far post in the 83rd. Bayern fans set off fireworks as they celebrated and Kane was ready to run onto the field to join his teammates until Xavi sent Poulsen through for the final say. “We’re almost champions,” Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund said after what he described as “a spectacle.” Bayern may have to wait only a day for their record-extending 34th crown as Leverkusen must win at Freiburg on Sunday, but they would happily settle to take their title on home turf against Borussia Monchengladbach next week when Kane will be back. “We are happy, regardless whether we become champions tomorrow or next week,” goalkeeper Jonas Urbig said. Elsewhere, resurgent Borussia Dortmund climbed past Leipzig and Freiburg into fourth place with a 4-0 demolition of Wolfsburg from braces by Serhou Guirassy and Karim Adeyemi. Dortmund have garnered 16 points from their last six matches and are well in contention again for a top-four finish. Borussia Monchengladbach played out a wild 4-4 draw with lowly Hoffenheim, who fought from 2-0 and 3-2 down to lead 4-3 before Gladbach’s Tim Kleindienst had the last laugh in stoppage time. Jens Stage struck twice early on for Werder Bremen before Union Berlin rallied to a 2-2 draw, while in Hamburg Nick Woltemade first had a penalty saved before scoring a late winner in a 1-0 win for Cup finalists VfB Stuttgart at St Pauli, who had Siebe van der Heyden and goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj sent off. Beloved Motorcycle Company Announces Bad News as Sales Plunge Beloved Motorcycle Company Announces Bad News as Sales Plunge A beloved motorcycle company has announced bad news as sales plunge amid economic uncertainty. On May 1, 2025, Harley-Davidson reported that global motorcycle retail sales were “down 21 percent year-over-year, driven by a volatile macroeconomic environment and overall consumer uncertainty.” The company noted that Harley-Davidson Motor Company revenue was “down 27 percent year-over-year, primarily due to a planned decrease in motorcycle shipments.” As a result, Harley-Davidson wrote, “Due to the uncertain global tariff situation and macroeconomic conditions, we are withdrawing our full year 2025 financial outlook from February 5, 2025.” Despite the bad news, the company cited some positives. “Our first quarter results were ahead of our expectations in many areas, while retail sales in the U.S. came in softer than anticipated,” Jochen Zeitz, Chairman, President and CEO, Harley-Davidson, wrote in a press release. “We remain focused on navigating the challenging economic and tariff environment, through diligent execution of our cost productivity measures, supply chain mitigation, tight operating expense control and reducing dealer inventory,” he wrote. “In addition, we remain committed to driving retail sales through increased marketing initiatives as we enter the riding season.” According to Harley-Davidson’s press release, numerous areas were down. “First quarter global motorcycle shipments decreased 33 percent, which was mostly expected but also reflects the softer than expected demand environment,” the company reported. “Revenue was down 27 percent driven primarily by the planned decrease in wholesale shipments and unfavorable foreign currency, partially offset by favorable mix and favorable global pricing and net incentives. Parts & Accessories revenue was down 14 percent and apparel revenue was down 11 percent, due to lower customer traffic at dealer stores,” the company noted. Warren Buffett to step down as Berkshire Hathaway CEO at year’s end – National Warren Buffett to step down as Berkshire Hathaway CEO at year’s end – National Warren Buffett shocked an arena full of his shareholders Saturday by announcing that he wants to retire at the end of the year. Buffett said he will recommend to Berkshire Hathaway’s board that Greg Abel should become CEO at the end of the year. “I think the time has arrived where Greg should become the Chief Executive office of the company at year end,” Buffett said. Abel has been Buffett’s designated successor for years, and he already manages all of Berkshire’s noninsurance businesses. But it was always assumed he wouldn’t take over until after Buffett’s death. Previously, the 94-year-old Buffett has always said he has no plans to retire. Buffett announced the news at the end of a five-hour question and answer ******* and didn’t take any questions about it. He said the only board members who knew this was coming were his two children, Howard and Susie Buffett. Abel, who was sitting next to Buffett on stage, had no warning. Many investors have said they believe Abel will do a good job running Berkshire, but it remains to be seen how good he will be at investing Berkshire’s cash. Buffett also endorsed him Saturday by pledging to keep his fortune invested in the company. Story continues below advertisement 1:48 World could see its 1st trillionaire within a decade, Oxfam predicts “I have no intention — zero — of selling one share of Berkshire Hathaway. I will give it away eventually,” Buffett said. “The decision to keep every share is an economic decision because I think the prospects of Berkshire will be better under Greg’s management than mine.” Thousands of investors in the Omaha arena gave Buffett a prolonged standing ovation after his announcement in recognition of his 60 years leading the company. CFRA research analyst Cathy Seifert said it had to be hard for Buffett to reach this decision to step down. “This was probably a very tough decision for him, but better to leave on your own terms,” Seifert said. “I think there will be an effort at maintaining a ‘business as usual’ environment at Berkshire. That is still to be determined.” Buffett earlier warned that Trump’s tariffs were harmful Earlier, Buffett warned Saturday about the dire global consequences of President Donald Trump’s tariffs while telling the thousands of investors gathered at his annual meeting that “trade should not be a weapon” but “there’s no question that trade can be an act of war.” Story continues below advertisement Buffett said Trump’s trade policies have raised the risk of global instability by angering the rest of the world. “It’s a big mistake in my view when you have 7.5 billion people who don’t like you very well, and you have 300 million who are crowing about how they have done,” Buffett said as he addressed the topic on everyone’s mind at the start of the Berkshire Hathaway shareholders meeting. While Buffett said it is best for trade to be balanced between countries, he doesn’t think Trump is going about it the right way with his widespread tariffs. We should do what we do best and they should do what they do best,” he said. America has been going through revolutionary changes ever since its birth and the promise of equality for all, which wasn’t fulfilled until years later, Buffett said. But nothing that is going on today has changed his long-term optimism about the country. Story continues below advertisement “If I were being born today, I would just keep negotiating in the womb until they said, ‘You could be in the United States,’” Buffett said. Market turmoil doesn’t create big opportunities Buffett said he just doesn’t see many attractively priced investments that he understands these days, so Berkshire is sitting on $347.7 billion in cash, but he predicted that one day Berkshire will be “bombarded with opportunities that we will be glad we have the cash for.” Buffett said the recent turmoil in the markets that generated headlines after Trump’s tariff announcement last month “is really nothing.” He dismissed the recent drop in the market because he’s seen three periods in the last 60 years of managing Berkshire when his company’s stock was halved. He cited when the Dow Jones industrial average went from 240 on the day he was born in 1930 down to 41 during the Great Depression as a truly significant drop in the markets. Currently the Dow Jones Industrial Average sits at $41,317.43. “This has not been a dramatic bear market or anything of the sort,” he said. Buffett said he hasn’t bought back any of Berkshire’s shares this year either because they don’t seem to be a bargain either. Investor Chris Bloomstran, who is president of Semper Augustus Investments Group, told the Gabelli investment conference Friday that a financial crisis might be the best thing for Berkshire because it would create opportunities to invest at attractive prices. 2:18 Business Matters: Stocks around the world rally after Trump eases tariffs on electronics, for now Trending Now Conservative MP will resign Alberta riding so Pierre Poilievre can run again Man who kept angry crowd back from suspect at Lapu Lapu festival says it was right to do “I’m sure he’s praying that the trade war gets worse. This year, Hillary Rodham Clinton also attended. Clinton was the last candidate Buffett backed publicly because he has shied away from politics and any controversial topic in recent years for fear of hurting Berkshire’s businesses. Haibo Liu even camped out overnight outside the arena to be first in line Saturday morning. Liu said he worries that this year could be Buffett’s last meeting since he is 94, so he made it a priority to attend his second meeting. More on World More videos “He has helped me a lot,” said Liu who traveled from China to attend. “I really want to express my thanks to him.” Worries about replacing Buffett Shareholder Linda Smith, 73, first learned about Warren Buffett and Berkshire Hathaway when she rented a room from his sister, Doris, while she was a graduate student in Washington D.C. Smith said Doris came home from an annual meeting not long after Berkshire bought See’s Candy and told her she had to buy the stock. Smith couldn’t buy it immediately because the price of a single share was selling for about $3,400 and that was equal to her income as a grad student. But as soon as she got a job after college, she took her friend’s advice and began saving up to buy some of the stock that now sells for $809,350. Over the years, Smith estimates she has probably attended about 20 annual meetings — often bringing a friend. Story continues below advertisement “I really like to listen to Warren Buffett — particularly this year with everything that has happened,” Smith said. 0:45 Warren Buffett warns U.S.-China trade war would be ‘bad for the whole world’ Buffett has long said he has no plans to retire because he enjoys figuring out where to invest Berkshire’s money too much. He plans to continue working until he dies or becomes incapacitated. But he remains in good health even though he does use a cane, and he shortened the meeting’s question and answer ******* this year by a couple of hours. “I think even if he dies, these businesses will retain their value,” Smith said while looking around the 200,000-square-foot exhibit hall filled with booths from Berkshire companies like BNSF railroad, Geico insurance, Pilot truck stops, Duracell batteries and many others. “I anticipate my stock going down for a while but good businesses and good people will come back,” she said. But Smith and thousands of others will definitely miss hearing Buffett’s voice of reason after he is gone. Buffett has now been leading Berkshire for 60 years. Story continues below advertisement Buffett has said that Vice Chairman Greg Abel, who already oversees all of Berkshire’s non-insurance businesses, will take over as CEO when he is gone. Shareholders like Steven Check, who runs Check Capital Management, aren’t especially worried about succession because Abel is proven and Berkshire’s businesses largely run themselves. Buffett has said that Abel might even be a more hands-on manager than he is and get more out of Berkshire’s companies. “I think we’ll get a more hands-on manager and that could be that a good thing,” Check said. But he said Abel also knows that those managers enjoy the freedom to run their businesses and Abel isn’t going to do anything to turn them off. Reality Star Johnny Bananas Was Riding With John Elway During Golf Cart Accident That Killed His Friend: Report Reality Star Johnny Bananas Was Riding With John Elway During Golf Cart Accident That Killed His Friend: Report Reality star Johnny Bananas was reportedly riding with John Elway during the golf cart accident that killed his longtime agent, Jeff Sperbeck. Bananas, whose real name is John Devenanzio, is best known for his long-running tenure on MTV’s The Challenge. TMZ reported on Friday, May 2, that he “tried to keep [Sperbeck] alive” after he fell off the golf cart that Elway, 64, was driving in La Quinta, California on Saturday, April 26. Sperbeck, who suffered traumatic head injuries, died Wednesday, April 30, at the age of 62. According to TMZ, Sperbeck and Bananas, 42, were “standing on the back of the cart as Elway drove and his wife sat in the front seat.” The outlet cited a source as describing Sperbeck’s fall as a “freak accident” and saying Elway wasn’t speeding or driving erratically. John Elway Has Retained a Lawyer Following Jeff Sperbeck’s Death in Golf Cart Accident Elway’s son, Jack Elway, is friends with Bananas. The men were in the California desert for Stagecoach Festival festivities the previous weekend. Jack was also in the golf cart as the group returned from a Stagecoach event on the night of the accident. Us Weekly has reached out to Bananas and the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department for comment. On Friday, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco told The Denver Post that “nothing that we have found” indicated law enforcement needed to be involved. “This appears to be a horrific accident,” Bianco said. “And unfortunately for all of those involved, one of the people — well, a couple of them — happen to be very high-profile celebrities. And that makes this more of an issue than it probably should be.” Jeff Sperbeck’s Family Breaks Silence After He Dies in Golf Cart Accident: ‘Unimaginable Loss’ Elway called 911 after the incident, but first responders didn’t contact the sheriff’s department until days later. Bianco explained that the department only got involved after a “massive media inquiry” came their way once it was revealed that the legendary Denver Broncos quarterback was involved. “It is common practice for medical personnel, whether it be an ambulance personnel or hospital personnel or even fire personnel, to call us after the scene of an accident because something doesn’t look right,” Bianco said. “And this was not the case.” Bianco said that the medical team at the scene did not find any evidence to indicate Elway was intoxicated, though he did not elaborate on how they arrived at that conclusion. It is not clear if Elway was given a breathalyzer test. Denver’s 9News reported on Thursday, May 1, that Elway hired Denver-based attorney Harvey Steinberg following Sperbeck’s death. John Elway’s Sister Died Less Than 1 Month Before Golf Cart Accident Killed His Friend Jeff Sperbeck Steinberg has “a long history of representing celebrities who have run into legal trouble, including a number of Denver Broncos,” the network said. Sperbeck was reportedly still breathing when paramedics arrived on scene. He was placed on life support after being transported to Desert Regional Medical Center in nearby Palm Springs. The sports agent began representing Elway in 1990. The duo formed a close friendship and went on to cofound the wine brand 7Cellars in 2015. “I am absolutely devastated and heartbroken by the passing of my close friend, business partner and agent Jeff Sperbeck,” Elway said in a statement on Wednesday. “There are no words to truly express the profound sadness I feel with the sudden loss of someone who has meant so much to me.” He continued, “My heart and deepest sympathies go out to Jeff’s wife, Cori; his children Carly, Sam and Jackson; and everyone who knew and loved him. Jeff will be deeply missed for the loyalty, wisdom, friendship and love he brought into my life and the lives of so many others.” Source link #Reality #Star #Johnny #Bananas #Riding #John #Elway #Golf #Cart #Accident #Killed #Friend #Report Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Half-Life 3 is reportedly playable in its entirety and could be announced this year Half-Life 3 is reportedly playable in its entirety and could be announced this year Cue a new batch of “Half-Life 3 confirmed” memes. The latest rumor surrounding Valve’s long-awaited next installment in the Half-Life series claims that the game is currently “playable, end-to-end” and could even be announced in the summer, followed by a release in winter of this year. The speculation comes from Tyler McVicker, who’s known for reporting on Valve rumors, during his latest Q&A livestream. According to McVicker, the game is currently playable from beginning to end, which he guesses could put it on track for an announcement and release this year. Besides McVicker’s hours-long livestream, there have been other recent hints about Valve’s progress on its highly anticipated title. In March, Valve concept artist Evgeniy Evstratiy claimed that he was in the room where Valve made Half-Life 3 on CG Voices Podcast. In the same month, another Valve leaker, Gabe Follower, claimed that Half-Life 3 would be the “end of Gordon’s adventure,” potentially signaling a non-cliffhanger ending to one of gaming’s best franchises. Outside of these rumors, internet sleuths discovered code referencing HLX, which is widely thought to be the codename for Half-Life 3, in major updates to Deadlock and Dota 2. While these rumors are unconfirmed, they are promising signs of life for Half-Life 3. McVicker said during his livestream that the HLX project won’t be another virtual reality game like Half-Life: Alyx and that there are procedural generation features that aren’t for terrain generation or roguelike mechanics. Before you get your hopes up, remember that Half-Life 2 recently celebrated its 20-year anniversary, and we still don’t have any official confirmation from Valve about a follow-up game. Summer heatwaves are a nightmare for PC gaming – here are the tricks I’m using to stop my room from becoming a sauna Summer heatwaves are a nightmare for PC gaming – here are the tricks I’m using to stop my room from becoming a sauna There are a lot of great things about the summer season. It brings people together for more social activities, spreads positivity with nice sunshine, and even helps keep things lively indoors (if you’re an introvert like me). For PC gamers, though, it makes the enjoyment far more difficult. The heat levels that PC hardware produces, notably with high-end GPUs, are already high enough when under load. Plenty of cooling methods can help minimize this, such as more powerful CPU air coolers, more fans for intake and outtake, or water cooling (All-in-One liquid cooling or better known as AIO). However, I’m not willing to opt for AIO cooling; call me scared, but I don’t want any liquids near my PC (even if it’s the non-conductive mineral oils) – I’m sorry, it just feels strange. Air coolers are where it stops for me, especially when there’s plenty out there that do a great job at keeping temperatures low and have served me well for a while (I’m using Thermalright’s Peerless Assassin 120 SE). Despite that, the narrative changes when heatwaves are active. You may like Recent temperatures in the *** have made indoor work and gaming more exhausting, with my PC’s CPU and GPU temperatures skyrocketing. With summer fast approaching, it’s only going to get worse here, in the US, and other regions – and that’s where I’ve come across some potential solutions (well, sort’ve). (Image credit: Shutterstock / Iaroslav Neliubov) Undervolting your CPU, if you can, is incredibly beneficial for low temperatures If you’re like me, who has an irrational fear of tweaking settings in your PC BIOS, or worse, updating your BIOS firmware and potentially losing power, you might be quick to dismiss the idea of undervolting. Fortunately though, for a large majority of the time, if you follow the instructions in your motherboard’s manual regarding BIOS functionality and settings, there’s nothing to be afraid of (even if you happen to make a mistake), as removing the CMOS battery or resetting the motherboard will save you. Just make sure you don’t update your BIOS firmware during possible power cuts – seriously, I mean it. Now, you might be wondering, what’s so great about undervolting your system? Well, it’s simple; undervolting your CPU and GPU can lead to much lower temperatures as it makes these components use lower voltages, consuming less power. Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more. While there are risks involved, such as potential instability issues with your CPU, it comes down to a case of ‘Silicon Lottery’, which refers to the chances of your processor having slight manufacturing differences – essentially, your CPU may be performing better or worse than another unit of the exact same CPU. So, some CPUs may only need low amounts of voltage to reach stock clock speeds or even higher, while others may need more voltage to do so. (Image credit: Alexander_Safonov / Shutterstock) That might sound a little scary, but the good news is you don’t need to access your BIOS whatsoever to do this – hurray! It’s also worth mentioning that there’s a way to avoid any data loss or corruption from potential CPU instability. For my AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D CPU, undervolting was possible thanks to PBO Tuner (available via GitHub), an application that allows you to edit offset values of each CPU core. To get a sense of performance capabilities and temperatures, I used Cinebench R23 to stress test the processor before editing each value. I took the big leap and set each value to minus 30 – don’t be like me, just start with minus 10 and work your way down with each test for the sake of stability – and the results were pretty surprising, to say the least. Before the undervolting process, my CPU temperature hit a maximum of 85 degrees Celsius when running Cinebench – a significantly high temperature that shouldn’t be maintained under load, and likely because of the added spring heat – and it also scored 11,409 points. After the undervolting process, my CPU temperature hit a maximum of 75 degrees Celsius during the benchmark, a 12.5% decrease in thermals. Perhaps the best part besides temperature improvements, is that the processor scored 12,968, a 12.7% uplift in performance. The performance improvements were evident in games too, with far less stuttering and much better frame pacing (and slightly higher frame rates). This is more than likely because my processor was throttling beforehand to avoid overheating, effectively holding performance back where necessary. With lower temperatures, that’s not a big concern. To keep the undervolt active without doing it manually on startup, you’ll need to open Task Scheduler, create a task that runs the PBO Tuner app with the highest privileges configured for Windows 10 – it must be set to run at system startup and when the user is logged on. Then, in the ‘Actions’ tab, create an action and set it to ‘Start a program’. In the ‘Add arguments’ box, add every value you’ve set for each core, according to the number of cores you have – my CPU has eight cores, so I’ve entered ‘-30’ eight times. Ensure you have all boxes in the ‘Conditions’ tab unticked, and in ‘Settings’ only tick the box which says ‘Allow task to be run on demand’, then ‘****** a new instance’ on the dropdown, and voila. So far, after several stress tests and gaming for hours, I haven’t witnessed any instability issues, and long may it continue – because I know for sure, I’m going to need it with the summer days ahead… You may also like… Source link #Summer #heatwaves #nightmare #gaming #tricks #stop #room #sauna Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

Warren Buffett to ask board to make Greg Abel CEO of Berkshire Hathaway at year-end Warren Buffett to ask board to make Greg Abel CEO of Berkshire Hathaway at year-end OMAHA, Nebraska — Warren Buffett said he will soon ask the board of Berkshire Hathaway to have Greg Abel replace him as CEO at year end. While Buffett is 94 and Abel was designated as CEO successor in 2021, it nonetheless came as surprise to the thousands of admiring shareholders gathered for this year’s annual meeting in Omaha to once again hear the investing legend opine on the future of the company. “Tomorrow, we’re having a board meeting of Berkshire, and we have 11 directors. Two of the directors, who are my children, Howie and Susie, know of what I’m going to talk about there. The rest of them, this will come as news to, but I think the time has arrived where Greg should become the chief executive officer of the company at year end,” said Buffett, in the final few minutes of the meeting. Buffett noted he would still ‘hang around’ to help, but the final word would be with Abel, 62, currently the vice chairman of non-insurance operations. Buffett said at the annual meeting celebrating 60 years of him at the helm of Berkshire that he wouldn’t sell a single share. “I would add this, the decision to keep every share is an economic decision because i think the prospects of Berkshire will be better under Greg’s management than mine,” said Buffett. Buffett and Abel told CNBC’s Becky Quick after the shareholder meeting that the pair would discuss at the Sunday board meeting what Buffett’s role will be formally. Buffett is currently CEO and chairman of the conglomerate. So it’s not clear whether Abel will also assume the chairman role. This is breaking news. Please check back for updates. Donald Trump posts AI Image of himself as pope, sparks criticism – National Donald Trump posts AI Image of himself as pope, sparks criticism – National United States President Donald Trump posted an artificial intelligence-generated image of himself dressed as pope as the mourning of Pope Francis continues and just days before the conclave to elect his successor is set to begin. Trump’s action drew rebukes from a group representing Catholic bishops in New York and among Italians. The image, shared Friday night on Trump’s Truth Social site and later reposted by the White House on its official X account, raised eyebrows on social media and at the ********, which is still in the ******* of nine days of official mourning following Francis’ death on April 21. Catholic cardinals have been celebrating daily Masses in his memory and are due to open the conclave to elect his successor on Wednesday. The death of a pope and election of another is a matter of utmost solemnity for Catholics, for whom the pope is Christ’s vicar on Earth. That is all the more true in Italy, where the papacy is held in high esteem even by nonreligious Italians. Story continues below advertisement The image featuring Trump in a white cassock and pointed miter, or bishop’s hat, was the topic of several questions during the ********’s daily conclave briefing Saturday. Italian and Spanish news reports lamented its poor taste and said it was offensive, given that the ******* of official mourning is still underway. Left-leaning former Premier Matteo Renzi said the image was shameful. “This is an image that offends believers, insults institutions and shows that the leader of the right-wing world enjoys clowning around,” Renzi wrote on X. “Meanwhile, the U.S. economy risks recession and the dollar loses value. The sovereignists are doing damage, everywhere.” 2:23 Conclave to elect new pope to start on May 7 as cardinals meet in ******** City The ******** spokesman, Matteo Bruni, declined to comment. In the United States, the New York State Catholic Conference, which represents the bishops of the state in working with government, accused Trump of mockery. Do not mock us.” Italy’s left-leaning La Repubblica also featured the image on its homepage Saturday with a commentary accusing Trump of “pathological megalomania.” The White House did not immediately respond to questions about the backlash to the image or why the president had shared the image. More on World More videos But Jack Posobiec, a prominent far-right influencer and Trump ally who recently participated in a Catholic prayer event in March at Trump’s Florida resort, defended the president. “I’m Catholic. We’ve all been making jokes about the upcoming Pope selection all week. It’s called a sense of humor,” he wrote on X. The episode comes after Trump joked last week about his interest in the vacancy. “I’d like to be pope. That would be my number one choice,” the thrice married president, who is not Catholic, told reporters. Sen. Lindsey Graham, a close Trump ally, piled on. “I was excited to hear that President Trump is open to the idea of being the next Pope. This would truly be a dark horse candidate, but I would ask the papal conclave and Catholic faithful to keep an open mind about this possibility!” Graham, R-S.C., wrote on X. “The first Pope-U.S. President combination has many upsides. Watching for white smoke…. Trump MMXXVIII!” Story continues below advertisement Vice President JD Vance, who is Catholic and was one of the last foreign officials to meet with Francis before the pope died, also joked about Secretary of State Marco Rubio becoming pope, suggesting Rubio could add it to the long list of titles he holds, including national security adviser and acting archivist. Trending Now Man who kept angry crowd back from suspect at Lapu Lapu festival says it was right to do Quebec passengers say they were ‘abandoned’ by Porter Airlines after 7-hour ‘nightmare’ experience 4:42 Pope Francis’ impact on the Catholic Church Beyond floating himself for the job, Trump also has put in a plug for Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the archbishop of New York. “I have no preference. I must say, we have a cardinal that happens to be out a place called New York who’s very good. So we’ll see what happens,” he said. Dolan, 75, is one of 10 U.S. cardinals who will be voting in the conclave, but Trump’s pitch might have cost Dolan support. The reason conclaves are held in secrecy, with cardinals sequestered for the duration, is to prevent outside secular powers from influencing their choice, as occurred in centuries past. Story continues below advertisement There is an old saying about campaigning for the job of pope or of being promoted excessively, especially by outsiders: If you “enter a conclave as pope, you leave as a cardinal.” While Trump attended Francis’ ********, he and Vance have clashed with U.S. bishops in general and Francis in particular over the administration’s hard line stance on immigration and its efforts to deport migrants en masse. Right before he was hospitalized in February for pneumonia, Francis issued a strong rebuke of the administration’s mass deportation plans and Vance’s theological justification of it. Over 12 years as pope, Francis tried to remake the U.S. Catholic hierarchy more in his image, elevating pastors who prioritized social justice and migration issues over culture warriors who were more favored by his more doctrinaire predecessors St. John Paul II and Benedict XVI. A new pope who is more conservative could reverse that effort. Trump has nominated as his ambassador to the Holy See Brian Burch, whose Catholicvote.org has been aggressively covering the pre-conclave days at the ********. It was one of the main disseminators in English-speaking media of a report, flatly and officially denied by the ********, that Cardinal Pietro Parolin had had a health scare this past week that required medical attention. Parolin was the secretary of state under Francis and is seen as a leading contender to be pope. He is also the main architect of the ********’s China policy and its controversial 2018 deal with Beijing over bishop nominations — a deal that the was sharply criticized by the first Trump administration. © 2025 The ********* Press Source link #Donald #Trump #posts #Image #pope #sparks #criticism #National Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

With May the 4th Upon Us, Actual Reason Star Wars Outlaws Chose That Specific Time ******* Makes Me Think Ubisoft Isn’t All Bad With May the 4th Upon Us, Actual Reason Star Wars Outlaws Chose That Specific Time ******* Makes Me Think Ubisoft Isn’t All Bad Every year, Star Wars Day brings with it a wave of nostalgia, a flood of fan-made tributes, and an endless supply of memes. As this May 4th approaches, I found myself thinking about something most gamers love to roast: Star Wars Outlaws. And, surprisingly, not to mock it, but to appreciate one thing it nailed: The timeline. The decision to set the game between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi was a bold move, but a smart one, and it might earn Ubisoft a bit of redemption. Let’s be clear: the game wasn’t perfect. It flopped hard out of the gate. But over time, something unexpected happened: it grew on me. Star Wars Outlaws made one strong choice in an otherwise shaky package For a game that lets you ride speeders through alien jungles, pull off heists, and run through open worlds without a loading screen, Star Wars Outlaws was supposed to be a technical marvel. Even though it failed to achieve that. But the creative choice to set the game during the narrow window between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi gave its narrative real weight. Many may think this was an accidental pick, but in an interview with Variety, creative director Julian Gerighty explained that this wasn’t random at all. That’s the perfect moment for this scoundrel adventure because it allows you to build up your reputation. In fact, Gerighty revealed that Lucasfilm Games themselves suggested it, and Ubisoft decided to run with it. So, why that specific time *******? He explains that it’s the perfect backdrop for a story about scoundrels, smugglers, and the criminal underworld. Thinking about it: The Empire is dominating, and the Rebel Alliance is scattered and in hiding. In this power vacuum, criminal syndicates are the ones that thrive. This is fertile ground for characters like Kay Vess to make their move, build a reputation, and play both sides if it means surviving. That kind of setting allows for a very different Star Wars story, one that doesn’t revolve around Jedi or some prophecy. Instead, it’s about the people living in the shadows of the galactic war: the ones stealing, scheming, scraping by, and trying to survive. The game is flawed, but worth a second look… maybe No Jedi. No prophecy. Just chaos. | Image Credit: Ubisoft When you combine the pull of the franchise, the great narrative backdrop, and the tech powering the game, it just shows that Ubisoft had a real chance to write a new chapter in its own history books. But maybe that’s in another timeline, because in this one, it took all the wrong steps after picking a setting. The gameplay was bland, the AI was weak, and the content was repetitive. Saying the game had a “rocky start” with “softer than expected” sales might be putting it too lightly. However, it’s always nice to find the good in flawed things. Especially in a gaming world full of missed opportunities and half-baked tie-ins, choosing the perfect moment in Star Wars history to ground a game like this? That’s rare. And oddly enough, it makes me think Ubisoft isn’t all bad. With recent news that the game is coming to the Nintendo Switch 2, there might be a chance to give the game a try, as it has been through fixes and is in a better state than it has ever been. So this May the 4th, while you rewatch the Skywalker saga or browse deals on Baby Yoda merch (Share details below if you find a good one), maybe also give Star Wars Outlaws another look. No, it’s not flawless. But it tells a great story, in the right place, at the right time. Berkshire’s war chest swelled to a record $348 billion as the company braced for volatility.
