Dordogne ******* investigated as a grudge killing
Dordogne ******* investigated as a grudge killing
French authorities believe a killer with a grudge may be behind the savage ******* of a British woman in a French medieval village.
Karen Carter, 65, was stabbed to death in a frenzied attack on Tuesday near the front porch of the gîte she rented to holidaymakers in Tremolat.
The mother of four was found sprawled on the ground next to her car with eight serious stab wounds over her “chest, groin, arm and leg” by a male friend with whom she had attended a wine-tasting only 10 minutes beforehand.
Jean-Francois Guerrier, a wealthy 74-year-old local businessman, who found Mrs Carter and was said to have been in a relationship with her in the weeks before the attack, was questioned by police but also quickly released without charge.
French authorities are focusing their efforts on anyone who intimately knew the pair and “may have been after” either one or both of them, said Sylvie Martins-Guedes, the prosecutor leading the investigation.

On Saturday afternoon, a squad of nine gendarmes and a plain-clothed officer were seen scouring for a potential ******* weapon in a coppice approximately half a mile from Mrs Carter’s farmhouse.
A 69-year-old woman from the village was arrested on Thursday but released without charge two days later after police examined her schedule.
The savagery of the attack in a commune of only 600 people that has seen no serious crime in nearly half a century has left friends and neighbours perplexed.
One neighbour highlighted the disturbing similarity between the events of this week and the plot of a 1970 psychological thriller titled “The Butcher”, which was filmed in Tremolat.
Written and directed by Claude Chabrol, the French New Wave film tells the story of a young butcher who falls in love with the headteacher of the local school while embarking on a serial-killing spree of young women in the village.
Police were seen on Saturday scouring for a potential ******* weapon in woods around half-a-mile from the ******* scene – Paul Grover for The Telegraph
On the sun-baked gravel outside Mrs Carter’s farmhouse on Route de Soulaleve, the bloodstains were still visible.
A blue-and-white football and a covered hot tub in the garden hint at the life she had enjoyed in the Dordogne.
Mrs Carter was an amateur footballer for Les Reines du Foot (The Queens of Football), a local team for women aged over 50.
On Saturday, the club’s Instagram account released a collage of pictures in tribute to Mrs Carter, who wore the number 12 jersey and played in midfield.
“Today we are playing for you,” they said in a statement.

Mr Guerrier is still deeply affected by Mrs Carter’s death, according to those who know him. “He does not want to say anything, but is fine,” said a young British woman living at his home.
A close friend of the victim adamantly rejected suggestions that Mrs Carter, who had been married to her South African husband Alan for 30 years, was in a romantic relationship with Mr Guerrier.
The English-speaking woman, who declined to give her name, was parked near the ******* scene on Saturday morning.
Speaking through the driver’s window, she told journalists: “Karen was a wonderful person, she was one of my best friends, and it’s just horrific and nobody knows why or whatever.
“She had no feud with anybody. Everybody loved Karen, she was fantastic.”
When asked about the extent of Mr Guerrier’s relationship with Mrs Carter, she curtly replied “they were just friends” and drove off declining to answer further questions.

But a British expatriate, originally from Kent, who did not wish to be named, said that he believed that Mrs Carter had started a new relationship.
”I have known Karen for a while, she seemed to be fully in control of her life, a strong businesswoman who had an air of authority about her.”
He added that “by all accounts”, Mrs Carter was very happy in her new relationship but kept it quiet and was very modest.
‘Crime of passion’
Martine, a retired Belgian expatriate who lives a few doors away from Mrs Carter, said the ******* could have been a “crime of passion”.
Speaking just outside her farmhouse as her husband carried out repair work in the background, said: “A tragedy for her [Mrs Carter]. A love story. It’s a crime of passion.”
Asked if it was possibly a burglary gone wrong, she puffed out her cheeks and replied “no”.
“From one o’clock in the afternoon [yesterday] until eight o’clock, the road was blocked, the five or six gendarmes were carrying out a crime reconstruction with the magistrate,” she added.
Neighbours and business owners are uncowed by the prospect of a killer still at large.
“I’m not afraid at all,” Jean-Francois remarked as he stood in the front garden while his son played behind him.
“There is never any crime, this is the first time in 45 years.”
One villager said of Tremolat: ‘There is never any crime, this is the first time in 45 years’ – Paul Grover for The Telegraph
Another woman, who gave her name as Sylvie, guffawed with laughter when asked if Tremolat had a crime problem.
“Not to my knowledge, this is the first, I hope.”
Estelle Lepers, co-owner of Le Vieux Logis, a Michelin-starred restaurant and hotel in the centre of the village, said: “You could leave your bag in a field and three days later it will still be there.
Gesturing to the chateau’s panelled doors, which have welcomed British chefs Keith Floyd and Rick Stein, she said: “My door is still open.
“It hasn’t changed this is really so incredible that this kind of thing has happened. You cannot stop living your life.
“It’s so safe here, too safe, so we can’t imagine that kind of thing happening. People are just waiting for the end of this story, that’s it.”

World Snooker Championship 2025: Mark Williams defeats Judd Trump 17-14 in semi-final
World Snooker Championship 2025: Mark Williams defeats Judd Trump 17-14 in semi-final
Three-time champion Mark Williams produced a vintage display to defeat world number one Judd Trump 17-14, becoming the oldest ever player to reach a World Championship final.
The Welshman, who turned 50 in March, eclipses his compatriot Ray Reardon, who won the title six times and appeared in the 1982 final as a 49-year-old.
Williams had trailed 7-3 early in the match but his enduring class shone through as he reined in the 2019 winner to 8-8 on Friday, then pulled clear over two sessions on Saturday to avenge his 17-16 loss to Trump in their last-four Crucible thriller in 2022.
Resuming 13-11 up, the Welshman took the first two frames with half centuries before Trump responded with his 106th century of a fruitful campaign, which has yielded six appearances in finals.
However, when Trump hit a safety shot too thinly, it left Williams among the ****** and he capitalised with a superb 100 break of his own to lead 16-12 at the mid-session interval.
The 35-year-old Englishman, who was looking to add to his world crown from 2019, took the 29th frame and made a 116 clearance when Williams missed a red to the left middle to get back to 16-14.
His hopes of a revival were dashed when he missed a difficult ****** to the right corner and Williams wrapped up a famous victory with his second century of the evening.
Williams will now face China’s Zhao Xintong in the first world final to be contested by two left-handed players.
Their best-of-35 encounter will get under way on Sunday at 13:00 BST, which will be live on BBC Two.

Tomatoes shipped to 3 states recalled for possible salmonella contamination: See where
Tomatoes distributed to three U.S. states have been recalled due to concerns about possible salmonella contamination.
Williams Farms Repack LLC announced the recall on May 2, according to the Food and Drug Administration. The Lodge, South Carolina-based produce wholesaler said the affected tomatoes were packaged and sold to wholesalers and distributors in Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina between April 23-28.
On April 29, Williams Farms Repack was notified by Southeast Tomato Distributors that the tomatoes supplied from H&C Farms may be contaminated with Salmonella, according to the FDA.
The recalled tomatoes vary in size and have either Williams Farms Repack or H&C Farms labels on them. No illnesses have been reported to date, the FDA said.

What to do with the recalled tomatoes?
The FDA is urging anyone who bought the recalled tomatoes not to consume the products and return them to the place of purchase for a full refund, or they can just discard the affected item.
What are the effects of salmonella infection?
Salmonella is an organism that can “cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems,” according to the FDA.
Healthy people infected with salmonella usually experience several symptoms, such as fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain, the federal agency said. In rare cases, salmonella can get into the bloodstream and produce more severe illnesses like arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

Greg Abel is the successor to Warren Buffett at Berkshire Hathaway. Here’s how he got there
Greg Abel is the successor to Warren Buffett at Berkshire Hathaway. Here’s how he got there
Gregory Abel, Vice Chairman overseeing non-insurance operations for Berkshire Hathaway, meets shareholders in the exhibition hall during the Berkshire Hathaway Inc annual shareholders’ meeting in Omaha, Nebraska, U.S., May 3, 2024.
Scott Morgan | Reuters
Warren Buffett plans to hand over the reins of Berkshire Hathaway at the end of 2025 to Greg Abel, who has been working for the legendary investor for more than two decades and has a long track record as a business operator in his own right.
Abel has been on Berkshire Hathaway’s board since 2018, and his current title is vice chairman of non-insurance operations. That role puts Berkshire’s businesses in areas like utilities, railroads and retail in his purview.
The utility and energy industry is where Abel, 62, cut his teeth before becoming Buffett’s right-hand man. He first joined Berkshire when Buffett’s firm struck a deal for a controlling stake in MidAmerican Energy, where Abel was an executive, in 1999. He later served as the CEO of that company, which was renamed Berkshire Hathaway Energy.
One key role for Abel in recent years has been his involvement with Berkshire’s growing position in five Japanese conglomerates. Abel said during Saturday’s shareholder meeting that he expects Berkshire to hold on to those Japan investments for decades to come.
Abel has been known as Buffett’s heir apparent since 2021, when the late Charlie Munger revealed the decision at a shareholder meeting. The well-telegraphed move has given Abel time to win over shareholders and other key stakeholders at Berkshire.
“Greg is ready. I have no doubt about that. We’ve known if for a long time,” longtime Berkshire board member Ron Olson told CNBC on Saturday.
Originally from Canada, Abel attended the University of Alberta and is lover of hockey. In his 2023 annual letter, Buffett said that he and Abel lived just a few blocks apart from each other in Omaha in the 1990s but never met in person during that *******.

Al-Ahli beat Kawasaki in Asian Champions League final
Al-Ahli beat Kawasaki in Asian Champions League final
Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ahli have defeated Japan’s Kawasaki Frontale 2-0 to win the Asian Champions League Elite title for the first time at a raucous King Abdullah Sports City Stadium.
Brazil winger Galeno broke Kawasaki’s resistance in the 35th minute on Saturday when he bent an unstoppable strike into the top corner to send the home side on their way to a first Asian title, with Franck Kessie heading in their second seven minutes later.
The victory makes Al-Ahli the third Saudi club to win the competition in its various guises, joining city rivals and twice winners Al-Ittihad and Riyadh’s four-times champions Al-Hilal.
“We are so proud,” said Al-Ahli goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. “Once we knew the final eight would be played in Jeddah it was our goal to be champions in front of our fans. Since I came here 18 months ago, they have supported us so much.
“As I said when I signed here, it’s to make history, to continue to win trophies and make this club as big as it was before.”
Al-Ahli were heavy favourites with a line-up featuring an expensively acquired array of foreign talent that included UEFA Champions League winners Riyad Mahrez and Roberto Firmino, who once both starred in England’s Premier League.
Twice inside the opening six minutes Louis Yamaguchi denied the home side, the Kawasaki goalkeeper blocking Ivan Toney’s viciously struck right-foot effort before making a point-blank block at the resulting corner from Ziyad Al-Johani.
The Japanese outfit almost silenced the crowd in the 11th minute with a moment of individual skill from Marcinho, the Brazilian gliding beyond Ali Majrashi to bear down on goal only to shoot across the area and past the far post.
Toney fired wide and Roger Ibanez was just off target with a curling effort from the edge of the area as Al-Ahli increased the pressure, but a disciplined Kawasaki held firm.
However, the opener eventually came with 10 minutes remaining of the first half when Kawasaki gave away possession close to their own goal.
Firmino fed Galeno in space 25 metres out and, as midfielder So Kawahara made a late, vain attempt to close the Brazilian down, the former Porto man bent a perfectly-measured right-foot strike into the top corner.
Al-Ahli doubled their lead soon after, the Saudi side capitalising on their opponents being temporarily down to 10 men with left back Sota Miura off the field injured.
Firmino was heavily involved again, bursting through on the right side of the area to clip a cross into the six-yard box that the quickly arriving Ivorian Kessie rose to head home.

ExxonMobil Continues to Prove It’s the Best-Run Company in the Oil Patch
ExxonMobil Continues to Prove It’s the Best-Run Company in the Oil Patch
ExxonMobil delivered industry-leading financial results in the first quarter.
That empowered it to return an industry-leading amount of cash to its shareholders.
The oil company expects to improve upon its performance in the coming years.
ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM) is the 800-pound gorilla in the oil sector. It’s not only the industry’s biggest company by market capitalization (over $450 billion), but also the leader across several crucial categories.
The oil company showcased its prowess in the first quarter when it delivered industry-leading performance amid challenging market conditions. Here’s a look at the quarter and the key factors fueling ExxonMobil‘s success.
Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Continue »
ExxonMobil’s recent first-quarter results were nothing short of exceptional, considering the market conditions during the *******. The company delivered industry-leading earnings of $7.7 billion, or $1.76 per share, which beat analysts’ expectations by $0.01 per share. It also led the sector by producing $13 billion in cash flow from operations while generating $8.8 billion in free cash flow.
The company delivered stronger-than-expected earnings despite a significant decline in industry refining margins, weaker crude oil prices, lower base production volumes from some noncore assets sales, and higher expenses from growth initiatives.
One factor fueling its strong results was its robust oil and gas production in the quarter. Exxon’s output averaged 4.6 million barrels of oil equivalent (BOE) per day. That was up an eye-popping 20% from the prior-year *******, driven by its acquisition of Pioneer Natural Resources last year.
The other big catalyst was Exxon’s industry-leading structural cost-savings program. That strategy is now saving the company $12.7 billion annually compared to 2019’s level, which is more than all other international oil companies (IOCs) combined. The company captured an additional $600 million of cost savings via this program during the first quarter.
The combination of investments to grow its volumes and structural cost savings added $4 billion to the company’s bottom line during the first quarter, which helped offset some of the impact of inflation and other factors on its earnings.
Exxon’s industry-leading cash flow enabled it to deliver industry-leading shareholder returns. The oil giant sent $9.1 billion of cash to its investors during the quarter, including buying back a sector-leading $4.8 billion of its stock. That has the company on track to repurchase about $20 billion of shares this year.
Story Continues
Exxon also paid $4.3 billion in dividends. The company delivered its sector-leading 42nd consecutive annual dividend increase earlier this year. Only 4% of companies in the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) have delivered dividend growth of 42 years or more.
The company’s elite balance sheet played a key role in its ability to return cash to investors. The company ended the quarter with $18.5 billion in cash on hand. While that was down from $23.2 billion at the end of the fourth quarter, it maintained industry-leading leverage ratios of 12% debt-to-capital (down from 13% in the fourth quarter) and 7% on a net basis after factoring in its massive cash balance (up from 6% at the end of last year). That gives it lots of cushion to weather lower oil prices in the future.
ExxonMobil firmly expects to improve upon its already industry-leading performance in the future. The company continues to invest heavily in expanding its advantaged resources, which are its lowest-cost and highest-margin assets. The company plans to start 10 advantaged projects this year, which will generate more than $3 billion of earnings next year at constant prices and margins. Meanwhile, even if prices and margins fall, these investments will still contribute to its financial results.
The company is also on track to deliver $18 billion in structural cost savings by the end of 2030 compared to 2019’s level. When added to its growth capital investments, Exxon expects to add $20 billion to its earnings and $30 billion to its cash flow by 2030.
The oil giant’s strategy of enhancing its earnings capacity also puts it in a stronger position to weather lower oil prices in the future. Meanwhile, it will significantly boost the company’s upside potential if pricing improves.
ExxonMobil continues to prove it’s the best-run company in the oil industry. Its ability to produce industry-leading profits and return more cash to investors than anyone else has helped give it the fuel to produce peer-leading total returns (17% compound annual shareholder return over the past three years). With more earnings growth and cost savings ahead, Exxon is in a strong position to continue growing shareholder value in the future, making it an excellent oil stock to buy and hold for the long haul.

Fans (and horses) are ready for the Kentucky Derby
Fans (and horses) are ready for the Kentucky Derby
Derby Day racing fans prepared for the rain prior to the 151st running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on May 3, 2025 in Louisville, Kentucky.
Horsephotos | Getty Images
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The first sign that the 151st running of the Kentucky Derby would be a wet one actually came on Friday.
The day before the race, a severe thunderstorm rolled into Louisville, soaking fans or sending them for cover during the Kentucky Oaks. Heavy winds blew over temporary rent-a-fences onto surrounding roads, bringing traffic to a halt around Churchill Downs.
“The police stopped the bus!” one elderly woman trying to leave the racetrack Friday said on the phone in an angry southern drawl. “Whoever heard of such?”
Stopping or slowing down, after all, isn’t part of the race, and that goes for both the horses and the people at the Derby. On Saturday, even as the rain began in the morning and continued through the afternoon in a steady downpour, the party raged in kind.
“If you’re with the right people, and you’re enjoying the time and the atmosphere, the rain doesn’t matter at all,” said Tom Flynn, 48, who was attending his 15th Derby on Saturday.
The hours leading up the race were still action packed.
Dignitaries ranging from retired NFL players to influencers to Kentucky governor Andy Beshear walked the red carpet. Serious bettors and the people who heard a tip from a friend alike were heavily invested in the day’s earlier races, watching intently on TVs above the wager window and cheering or groaning as horses made their way down the homestretch. All the while, countless people walked by often holding one (and nearly as often two) of the race’s signature drinks, the mint julep and the lily.
And the outfits somehow managed to maintain their essence amid the rain, safely tucked away under large, clear ponchos so as not to be fully muted.
To see the suits and dresses of the Derby is to be frozen in a specific time and place. No matter what fashion trend may be taking over the outside world, inside the gates of Churchill Downs you will always see colorful suits with crisp, single-pleated, slim-fit pants, floral dresses and elaborate headwear, with hats tilted to just the perfect angle.

“I started planning my outfit four months ago,” Kimberly Booth, 54, said. She started with her headwear first, finding a hat maker she liked on Etsy, then finding matching dresses from there.
Booth was attending her first Derby. After years of playing the lottery for tickets, she finally received one from a friend. Traveling all the way from Louisiana, the party exceeded her expectations.
“It’s even more [exciting] than I thought,” Booth said. “Especially because, being from just outside New Orleans we do Mardi Gras every single year, this is just spectacular. I love it.”
As for the actual race, the rain doesn’t necessarily level the playing field, with the conventional wisdom being a good horse is a good horse. That doesn’t mean people won’t be looking for an edge, though.
“Is it Sovereign? Oh, Sovereignty,” said Johnnie Rominger, a 48-year-old from West Virginia when asked who he would bet on for Derby. “It was a tip from a girl I know that knows horses. She said put money on him. I’ll try.”
Attending his second Derby, Rominger kept it simple when asked what he’s most excited about.
“I tell you what, I like drinking alcohol, I like relaxing, and I’m here with some buddies so that makes it nice.”

Jamie Vardy: Leicester striker blows referee’s whistle in win against Southampton
Jamie Vardy: Leicester striker blows referee’s whistle in win against Southampton
Premier League champion, FA Cup winner, Leicester City legend – and now, very fleetingly, playing the role of referee.
When ref David Webb sank to the floor after being accidentally shoulder barged by Jordan Ayew in Leicester’s 2-0 victory over Southampton at King Power Stadium, Vardy stepped in.
As Webb clutched his face on the ground, he took the opportunity to halt a Saints attack by blowing the stricken official’s whistle.
“I saw Southampton breaking down the left and with the ref down I thought I’ll blow his whistle to stop the game,” Vardy said with a smile to BBC Match of the Day.
Although Webb was unable to continue – replaced by fourth official Sam Barrott – he was able to walk off the pitch unaided.
Vardy, 38, was clearly in high spirits, having scored Leicester’s opener moments earlier with a crisp finish in the 17th minute.
That was his 199th goal for Leicester – the club he is leaving after 13 years when his contract expires in the summer.
The striker has three more games left this season to reach the 200-goal mark, make his 500th appearance for the club and cement his status as one of Leicester’s greats.
“It’s been everything,” Vardy said when asked what Leicester meant to him.
“It’s been mine and my family’s life for 13 years. We’ve been taken in by the fans and the whole city, and it has meant every single thing to me personally.
“When it’s been your life for that long and you see the camaraderie with the fans and my team-mates for the last 13 years, it’s been unbelievable.”

Arsenal’s Champions League prep stumbles at Bournemouth
Arsenal’s Champions League prep stumbles at Bournemouth
Arsenal have warmed up for their Champions League semi-final second-leg showdown at Paris St Germain with another deflating home defeat, this time 2-1 to Bournemouth in the Premier League.
Declan Rice had fired the Gunners ahead after 34 minutes but Andoni Iraola’s visitors staged a spirited second-half comeback at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.
Dean Huijsen equalised in the 67th minute and eight minutes later Evanilson bundled in the winner to help Bournemouth complete a league double over the Gunners and boost their own faint European qualification prospects.
It was hardly the way coach Mikel Arteta would have wanted to go into Wednesday’s crucial second leg in Paris after his side had been beaten 1-0 at the Emirates in midweek.
While Arsenal’s title hopes were ended last week, their bid to be runners-up for the third year in a row is now also under threat from Manchester City and Newcastle, and even Champions League qualification is not yet completely nailed on.
It’s been an alarming domestic slump in the second half of the season for the Gunners, who’ve won only three of their last 10 league games and just one of the last five.
Blowing the lead against Bournemouth was the fourth time in five league games that Arsenal have dropped points from a winning position.
Arsenal are now three points ahead of City with three rounds to go, with fourth-placed Newcastle five behind the Gunners with a game in hand.
Youri Tielemans had earlier helped keep Aston Villa in the hunt for Champions League qualification, the midfielder’s first-half header sealing a 1-0 win over Fulham that moved them to seventh, level on points with Chelsea in fifth and Nottingham Forest in sixth.
In a battle between relegated sides, Leicester won for the first time since January by beating last-placed Southampton 2-0.
Leicester gave their fans some rare cheer with only their fifth league win, as club great Jamie Vardy — leaving at the end of the season — scored in the 17th minute and Jordan Ayew added the second from a free kick just before halftime.
Relegated Ipswich also had a decent afternoon as they fought back from 2-0 down to draw with Everton 2-2.
Beto and Dwight McNeil put Everton in control in the Merseyside club’s penultimate game at their venerable Goodison Park home before they move to a new stadium.
But Julio Enciso’s stunning long-range effort before the break sparked a comeback for Ipswich. Substitute George Hirst levelled with a far post header.

RFK Jr. Doesn’t Actually Believe Germs Are Real, Which Seems Like Terrible News For Everyone Going On A Cruise This Year
RFK Jr. Doesn’t Actually Believe Germs Are Real, Which Seems Like Terrible News For Everyone Going On A Cruise This Year
Gastrointestinal illnesses on cruise ships hit a 12-year high in 2024, and 2025 has been even worse, with cruise lines seeing an entire year’s worth of outbreaks in only the first quarter of the year. So it was hard to understand why Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. decided it was the perfect time to get rid of the people at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention who investigate outbreaks and ensure cruise ships are properly sanitized, especially with a new Norovirus strain running rampant. Now it all makes sense, though — RFK doesn’t believe germs are real.
That’s a serious claim, and we have so much evidence that germs cause disease, you probably don’t have a category in your brain for a real person in real life who actually believes germ theory is wrong, much less the person in charge of our nation’s health. And yet, as Ars Technica recently pointed out, that claim is based on RFK’s own words that he published in his book The Real Anthony Fauci. You just have to look at the Miasma vs. Germ Theory section of the chapter he titled “The White Man’s Burden.” Yikes. On so many levels.

The Germs Can’t Hurt You, Apparently

In that chapter, Kennedy wrote, “‘Miasma theory’ emphasizes preventing disease by fortifying the immune system through nutrition and by reducing exposures to environmental toxins and stresses,” which, as Ars Technica also pointed out, also demonstrates a misunderstanding of the long-debunked miasma theory that disease is caused by “noxious mists and vapors.” Apparently, according to Kennedy, germ theory wasn’t based on actual evidence but instead got popular because it “[mimicked] the traditional explanation for disease—****** possession—giving it a leg up over miasma.”
By embracing germ theory, Kennedy argued doctors wrongly began to focus on “the pharmaceutical paradigm that emphasized targeting particular germs with specific drugs rather than fortifying the immune system through healthy living, clean water, and good nutrition.” Kennedy has also bemoaned the “$1 trillion pharmaceutical industry pushing patented pills, powders, pricks, potions, and poisons, and the powerful professions of virology and vaccinology led by ‘Little Napoleon’ himself, Anthony Fauci, fortify the century-old predominance of germ theory.”
Independent journalist Talia Lavin also posted a screenshot (embedded above) from the chapter, where Kennedy claimed Louis Pasteur, aka the “father of microbiology,” made a deathbed confession that he’d been wrong about germ theory. The source of that claim? A book titled Virus Mania that also claimed Ebola, bird flu and hepatitis don’t actually exist, either. Again, the top health official in the U.S. wrote this stuff in his own book, and you can probably check it out at your local library if you’re brave enough.
We’re All Going To Die

If Kennedy doesn’t actually believe that germs make you sick, then his decision to fire the health officials in charge of the CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program and gut the Division of Environmental Health Science and Practice finally makes sense. He isn’t worried about Norovirus outbreaks because he doesn’t believe the Norovirus is real.
“I thought ‘it now all makes sense’… I mean, it all adds up,” Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia pediatrician and infectious disease expert Paul Offit told Ars Technica after reading the chapter in question. “It’s so unbelievable, because you can’t imagine that someone who’s the head of Health and Human Services doesn’t believe that specific viruses or bacteria cause specific diseases, and that the prevention or treatment of them is lifesaving.”
Unfortunately for everyone involved, while you can and probably should avoid cruises for the foreseeable future, our Health Secretary’s unscientific belief that germs don’t actually cause disease will likely have far worse consequences than a bunch of cruise-goers losing it from both ends up and down the ship. What’s been described as a near-religious-level belief that everyone who disagrees with him is in the pocket of Big Pharma–pushing the theory that germs make you sick so they can get rich–is a threat to modern medicine and health in this country, as well as across the world.
Are clean air, regular exercise, and a healthy diet that includes a variety of vegetables important? Absolutely. But germs are still real, people still actually suffer and die from the diseases germs cause, and it’s almost beyond comprehension that someone who doesn’t believe in something as foundational as germ theory is our country’s top health official. And yet, somehow, it’s true.

Golden Age of Helldivers 2: Troost Divers, You Beautiful B**tards
Golden Age of Helldivers 2: Troost Divers, You Beautiful B**tards
One of the most popular planets in Helldivers 2, Troost, finally got liberated. Players have pointed out over the past few weeks that only a small section of players were diving on Troost of the Trigon Sector to liberate it from Automaton control. Every time players would check Troost’s liberation campaign, fewer than 1000 players were usually spotted fighting on the planet. These players have been grinding for over 20 days now, and today, they have finally managed to free the planet from Automatons, something that no one expected.
Helldivers 2‘s lore is slowly getting intense as the Meridian Singularity has stopped. However, something strange has happened. The Illuminate faction has completely disappeared, which makes no sense as Illuminate kicked off its invasion only a few months ago. The faction might return with a much greater plan, so players must stay frosty.
Helldivers 2 has managed to wipe out its competition, but its popularity is only expected to grow further as a movie based on the franchise has been confirmed.
Troost Divers have finally completed their goal in Helldivers 2
Over the past month, a certain section of Helldivers 2 players called Troost Divers has been working hard to liberate Troost from Automaton control. Many believed that these players were wasting their time by focusing on a planet that doesn’t really require their attention. However, these players have proved everyone wrong as they finally liberated it from Automaton control, a remarkable achievement indeed.
This just shows how small efforts can matter in the Galactic War, but why Troost? A past Major Order revealed that Troost is where the bots store their deep space communications relay, so taking a planet like this would certainly help Super Earth in the long run. Many criticised the Troost Divers for not focusing on the ongoing Major Orders, but if Arrowhead somehow ties the lore with the liberation of this planet, it would be perfect.
The current Major Order requires players to keep control of Fenrir III, Mastia, Turing, Claorell, and Achernar Secundus to ensure their safety after Illuminate weakened their defences. So far, players are doing a great job defending these planets, which is certainly an improvement, as players failed to complete the Major Order right before the Repulsive Gravity Field Generator was activated.
The Illuminate has mysteriously disappeared
The Illuminate could return with reinforcements, as many of its strong units from the first Helldivers game are yet to appear on the battlefield (Image via Arrowhead Game Studios)
Super Earth recently activated the Repulsive Gravity Field Generator and managed to stop the Meridian Singularity that was destroying everything on its path. Thankfully, the wormhole has stopped. However, something strange has happened: the Illuminate faction has wholly disappeared. Super Earth believes they decided to retreat because their numbers were reduced, but that might not be the case.
It would be stupid to assume that one of the deadliest alien races in the Helldivers universe would just retreat completely. The remaining Illuminate units have retreated to come up with another deadly attack. The entire faction is yet to appear in the game, so expect to see some stronger Illuminate units on the battlefield soon. The current Major Order may seem easy, but that’s just Arrowhead Game Studios giving players a cooldown ******* before a massive war.
The first Helldivers game featured some strong Illuminate enemies like Illusionist, Council Member, Obelisk, Apprentice, Strider, and Great Eye, and without these enemies, the Illuminate faction in the second game would feel incomplete.
Helldivers 2 has been dominating the co-op genre
Helldivers 2‘s chaotic gameplay, combined with the co-op experience, has made it one of the best games in the world (Image via Arrowhead Game Studios)
Recently, Helldivers 2 bagged two BAFTA Awards at the 2025 BAFTA Game Awards, and Johan Pilestedt, the CCO of Arrowhead, believes that it is because of the co-op experience. There are many co-op PvE games, but Helldivers 2 is different, as it offers an action-packed experience with exciting game mechanics. Plus, its intriguing lore has kept the players hooked for quite some time now.
The game is doing great, but fans are excited to know what’s next. We know that Arrowhead developers are working on a lot of new content, which includes new maps, enemies, weapons, Stratagems, etc, but on top of this, players need another crossover. The Killzone x Helldivers 2 crossover was a success, so players naturally want to see more crossovers.
But before Arrowhead starts to roll out the new content, it must ensure the game is in a stable condition, as many PC players have recently reported that they are facing major technical issues.
It’s no secret that Helldivers 2 has been dominating the co-op genre; in fact, the game’s popularity has grown so much that Sony has decided to create a movie based on the franchise. Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, has revealed that the studio has partnered with Sony Pictures to develop a movie based on Helldivers 2. With video game adaptations trending right now, it would be a great decision to give fans a Helldivers 2 movie.

Fears of global instability drive Singapore voters into ruling People’s Action Party’s arms

Singapore PM Lawrence Wong became the PAP party leader last year
Singapore’s ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) has won by a landslide in an election dominated by concerns over the cost of living and the country’s future economic stability.
Led by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong in his first election since he became party leader last year, the PAP clinched 65.6% of the vote and an overwhelming majority of the 97 seats in parliament.
Singaporeans went to the polls on Saturday worrying about inflation, wage stagnation and job prospects.
The result will be widely seen as a flight to safety to the PAP amid fears of global turbulence.
“Singapore feels particularly vulnerable given its economy’s size and exposure to international forces… Also we are notoriously risk-averse voters,” said Ian Chong, an associate professor in political science at the National University of Singapore (NUS).
The main opposition, the centre-left Workers’ Party (WP), failed to capture more seats but continued to hold on to its 10 seats in parliament.
The centre-right PAP has governed Singapore continuously since 1959, making it one of the longest-ruling political parties in the world.
It has enjoyed strong support from Singaporeans, particularly from older generations that have seen the country flourish under PAP rule.
But while elections have been free from fraud and irregularities, critics also say the party maintains an unfair advantage through gerrymandering and a tightly controlled media.
In the last three polls prior to Saturday’s result, the PAP saw two of its lowest-ever vote shares, while the WP made increasing inroads in parliament.
But Saturday’s result saw the PAP return to form, as voters gave Wong a strong mandate.

The PAP has enjoyed strong support from Singaporeans, particularly from older generations
With its open globalised economy, Singapore saw inflation surge in the last few years.
The government has attributed this to external factors such as the Ukraine and Gaza wars and supply chain disruptions. Critics however say a controversial goods and services tax hike exacerbated it.
With the US-China trade war under way and a 10% US tariff looming, authorities and experts have warned of even more shocks to the economy and possibly a technical recession.
Against this backdrop, the PAP campaigned on a message of stability.
Wong repeatedly promised that his team would “steer Singapore through the storm”, while warning that if more opposition MPs were elected, he would lose capable ministers at a time when good governance was most needed.
It was a message that resounded with many voters. One PAP supporter, a start-up owner who only wanted to be known as Amanda, told the BBC that her business has been affected with clients pausing some projects due to the economic climate.
“The headwinds are not great, there’s a lot of uncertainty… I want a party with experience [running the government],” she said.
Though the PAP saw a series of scandals in recent years, including one involving a cabinet minister, this was hardly a talking point during the election *******. Analysts said it was further from people’s minds given more immediate concerns about the economy.

Many Singaporeans have been concerned about the rising cost of living
Some see the result as a sign of confidence in Wong, who led Singapore’s Covid taskforce and became a familiar face as he regularly addressed the public during the pandemic.
“He’s shown that he is capable, with the Covid taskforce giving him credence. He was the guiding hand on that rudder… and he projects that stability for future global financial uncertainties,” said Rebecca Tan, a political science lecturer with NUS.
Wong is the first PAP prime minister to have improved the party’s vote share in his first election. Previous PMs saw dips in the polls in what analysts used to call the “new PM” effect”, or a reflection of voters’ uncertainty in a new leader.
The PAP’s strong result was also partly due to a fragmented opposition, with 10 parties going up against them. With few exceptions, most performed poorly.
Teo Kay Key, a research fellow at the think tank Institute of Policy Studies, said that despite recent elections showing there was a desire for political diversity, the latest result “shows that people are happy with the number of opposition MPs” for now.
But, she added, Singaporeans also “seem to be more selective” now when it comes to casting votes for the opposition, pointing to the WP’s performance.
The WP had campaigned on a platform of lowering the cost of living and strengthening the safety net.
While it failed to win more seats, it also saw increased vote shares in the constituencies it retained and close fights with the PAP in others, cementing its status as the country’s strongest opposition party.
It turned in a robust performance despite recent controversial cases involving a former Workers’ Party MP and WP leader Pritam Singh, who were both found guilty of lying to parliament. Many in the WP’s support base believe the case, against Singh especially, was politically motivated.
Addressing supporters shortly after the results for his constituency were declared, Singh acknowledged that “it was always going to be a difficult election”.
But he added: “The slate is wiped clean, we start work again tomorrow, and we go again.”
