In an open letter to Keir Starmer, a host of major artists claim creatives’ livelihoods are under threat as wrangling continues over a government plan to let artificial intelligence companies use copyright-protected work without permission. Describing copyright as the “lifeblood” of their professions, the letter warns Starmer that the proposed legal change will threaten Britain’s status as a leading creative power. “We will lose an immense growth opportunity if we give our work away at the behest of a handful of powerful overseas tech companies and with it our future income, the ***’s position as a creative powerhouse, and any hope that the technology of daily life will embody the values and laws of the United Kingdom,” the letter says. The letter urges the government to accept an amendment to the data bill proposed by Beeban Kidron, the cross-bench peer and leading campaigner against the copyright proposals. Kidron, who organised the artists’ letter, is seeking a change that requires AI firms tell copyright owners which individual works they have ingested into their models. Urging parliamentarians on all sides of the political spectrum and in both houses to support the change, the letter says: “We urge you to vote in support of the *** creative industries. Supporting us supports the creators of the future. Our work is not yours to give away.” Spanning the worlds of music, theatre, film, literature, art and media, the more than 400 signatories include Elton John, Kazuo Ishiguro, Annie Lennox, Rachel Whiteread, Jeanette Winterson, the National Theatre and the News Media Association, which represents more than 800 news titles including the Guardian. Kidron’s amendment will go to a House of Lords vote on Monday, although the government has already signalled its opposition to the change, saying that a consultation process already under way was the correct process for debating alterations to copyright law, which protects someone’s work from being used by others without permission. Under the government proposal, AI companies will be able to use copyright-protected material without permission unless the copyright holder “opts out” of the process by indicating – in an as yet unspecified way – that they do not wish their work to be used for free. Giles Martin, the music producer and son of the Beatles producer George Martin, told the Guardian the opt-out plan could be impractical for young artists. “When Paul McCartney wrote Yesterday his first thought was ‘how do I record this’ and not ‘how do I stop someone stealing this’,” said Martin, who was the music supervisor on the documentary series The Beatles: Get Back and co-produced the “last” Beatles song Now and Then. Kidron said the letter’s signatories were speaking out “to ensure a positive future for the next generation of creators and innovators”. Supporters of the Kidron amendment claim the change will ensure creatives are compensated for the use of their work in training AI models via licensing deals. Generative AI models, the term for technology that underpins powerful tools such as the ChatGPT chatbot or the Suno music-making tool, have to be trained on a vast amount of data in order to generate their responses. The main source of this information is online, including the contents of Wikipedia, YouTube, newspaper articles and online book archives. The government has submitted one amendment to the data bill that commits to officials carrying out an economic impact assessment of its proposals. A source close to Peter Kyle, the technology secretary, has told the Guardian that an opt-out system was no longer his preferred option. Officially, there are four options under consideration. The other three alongside the “opt-out” scenario are: to leave the situation unchanged; require AI companies to seek licences for using copyrighted work; and allow AI firms to use copyrighted work with no opt-out for creative companies and individuals. A government spokesperson said: “Uncertainty over how our copyright framework operates is holding back growth for our AI and creative industries. Today’s best air purifiers can remove everything from dust particles and **** dander to gases from the air in your home (here’s more on what air purifiers can and can’t help with). Different models are suited to different needs and spaces, so it’s worth taking a few minutes to figure out exactly what you need before you invest. Here are six questions to ask before buying an air purifier… What filters are included? Different filters tackle different particles. The most common option for particle filtering is the HEPA filter (High-Efficiency Particulate Air filter). According to EU standards, to be called a HEPA filter, it must capture at least 99.95% of particles that are 3 microns or less in size. This type of filter will help with dust, pollen, viruses and bacteria. You may like Some air purifiers have a carbon filter (sometimes called an activated carbon filter or charcoal filter). This is designed to absorb unpleasant odors and gases. (Image credit: Future) Those are the two most common types of filter, but more advanced models might add on filters to tackle specific pollutants. For example, Dyson’s most advanced air purifiers come with a selective catalytic oxidation filter that enables them to capture and destroy formaldehyde. This is a relatively rare addition, and this type of air purifier tends to be very expensive. How efficient is it at cleaning air? Different air purifiers are designed for use in different-sized spaces. The information to pay attention to is how quickly air is drawn through the filter (in cubic feet per minute) and the clean air delivery rate (CADR). A rule of thumb is that, for general use, you should look for a CADR that’s at least two-thirds of the room’s total area. Most air purifiers come with a recommended square footage for coverage, but be wary of taking this spec at face value – you also need to know how long the purifier will take to clean the air in a room of that size. What modes does it have? Some air purifiers come with an auto mode that adjusts based on pollution levels. They can switch on when the quality drops below a certain standard, or boost fan speeds in response to higher pollution levels, to clear the particles quickly. There might be information to show you the room’s air quality at a glance, and you might also be able to view air quality over time, perhaps via a companion app. Basic air purifiers won’t have these kinds of features. You’ll simply switch them on or off and adjust the fan speed manually. An auto mode prompted by an air quality sensor can help reassure you that your purifier is indeed doing something. It also means the appliance can respond to air quality changes that might otherwise be missed. Aside from an auto mode, some air purifiers have other special modes. A common one is a sleep mode or night mode, which will typically be quieter than standard modes (and may also turn off the appliance’s lights), so you can run it while you’re asleep without it disturbing you. Pricier, more advanced air purifiers will sometimes come with a companion app. This can provide information that’s difficult to show on-screen on the purifier itself, such as air quality over time. It might also enable you to turn the purifier on or off remotely. Some smart air purifiers have voice assistant support, too. Basic purifiers are operated by buttons on the machine itself, or may come with a remote control so you don’t need to get up and go over to the purifier to switch it on. The ability to set a timer or schedule when your air purifier comes on is useful if you don’t want to just be running it constantly. How do I keep an eye on the filters? In order for your air purifier to keep doing its job efficiently, the filter(s) will need washing or replacing periodically. Premium purifiers can have a filter health section in the companion app, while more basic options just have a warning light that tells you when your filter’s time is up. Some air purifiers can also be fans, heaters, dehumidifiers, or humidifiers. Or, perhaps more accurately, air purification is occasionally a bonus function added to other kinds of devices. For appliances that work by sucking in air and blowing it out again, you can just add a filter and – hey presto! – you’ve got an air purifier. In these cases, the air purification is often not the priority, so don’t expect advanced features like air quality sensors or stats. However, it can be a great way to save money and space by combining what could be multiple appliances into one. He phoned Labor candidate Trish Cook on Saturday afternoon, congratulating her on her win. The AEC had Ms Cook 987 votes ahead on a two party preferred vote on Saturday afternoon. “I want to sincerely thank everyone who supported me throughout this campaign — those who voted for me, volunteered, or sent kind words of encouragement,” Mr Moran said in a statement. “I am very grateful. After briefly switching to boxing, she later moved to Manchester and into the world of MMA, in which she now trains full-time. After winning the first two fights of her professional career – with her most recent victory in March, 2024 – Luxton signed a contract with the PFL. But her debut fight in June never happened. The chain of events which led to the bout getting cancelled started when her father Adam was rushed to hospital after suffering a heart attack. With Luxton needing an emergency operation at the same time, she ended up in a hospital bed in the ward below him. After surgery, she was able to spend two days with her father before he passed away in April – two months after her grandmother’s death. “When my dad passed away I thought I was going to do this PFL tournament then hang up my gloves – I can’t go on now,” recalls Luxton. “But he would be rolling in his grave if I didn’t carry on. He spent hours following me everywhere, he’s prepped my meals, helped me cut weight – he would have done all of that for nothing. “I am going to do it now for his legacy.” When Luxton returned to training, she found herself feeling more tired than usual but put the fatigue down to being in a “tough fight camp”. Inside two weeks, however, Luxton’s condition had deteriorated and she found herself bent over in pain at the gym while cold, sweating and shaking uncontrollably. The robots can carry much more explosives than aerial drones, a Ukrainian soldier told ***. His unit sent a robot with 66 pounds of explosives into a basement and killed Russian infantry. Ukrainian soldiers use ground robots to blow up Russian troops and equipment. These carry a far heavier explosive payload than drones that fly. Operators control these uncrewed ground vehicles, or UGVs, remotely. The UGVs can travel close to Russian positions, assuming they’re not spotted, and detonate. And Ukraine’s soldiers can stay safe and far from the action. They are a lot like flying drones, but the systems pack a greater punch because they don’t take flight. Oleksandr Yabchanka, the head of the robotic systems for Ukraine’s Da Vinci Wolves Battalion, told Business Insider that Ukraine’s soldiers attach bombs and explosives to ground robots, “turning that system into a kamikaze one.” The UGV actions mirror what has been done with aerial drones in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, where the flying drones explode and drop grenades. “A crucial difference between aerial and on-the-ground unmanned systems is the mass that they can carry,” Yabchanka said. He said Ukraine needs to “always be one step, half a step ahead of the enemy in terms of the powers of destruction.” That’s where these ground drones come into play. Packing a much ******* punch He said that while the biggest aerial drones can carry mines that weigh 22 pounds each, the smallest ground robots that he works with can take more than 48 pounds. On average, they can carry much more. He said that just a few hours before he spoke with Business Insider, his unit sent a ground robot carrying 66 pounds of explosives into a basement held by Russia, where it eliminated Russian infantry. Ukraine’s soldiers work with a host of drone types linked to do a wide range of work. There are small airborne drones for tactical action ranging from recon to strike and larger aerial uncrewed systems used to hit targets inside Russian territory. There are also naval drones that target ships in the ****** Sea, and then there are the UGVs, which can deal damage and carry out missions like casualty evac. That’s key when they’re fighting at a disadvantage against Russia’s much larger military army. He said that roughly 80% of Russians killed in battle are killed by uncrewed systems. The other 20% is mostly artillery — at the start of the war, it was the opposite. Aerial drones are responsible for most of the drone kills because of how prolific they are. More ground robots could mean a major firepower boost for Ukrainian forces. “Imagine how much more powerful we could be if we could bring twice as much explosives to the front line as we do now,” Yabchanka said. Unlike the quadcopters, this technology isn’t widely available to all units yet, but where it is being used, UGVs are evacuating wounded soldiers, firing into Russian positions with mounted weapons, carrying gear, laying mines, exploding inside enemy positions, and spying on the Russians, and more. An uncrewed arms race This is a technology that Russia is developing too. Yabchanka said that the question is: who will do it faster? There’s an effort on both sides of the war to advance this technology. The dynamic echoes the drone race that Ukraine and Russia are both currently locked in, with both sides developing new drones and counter-drone measures to defeat the other side’s drone tech, as well as rushing to make as many drones as possible. Yabchanka said Ukraine and its partners need to constantly innovate to keep coming out with new ground robot upgrades and improvements to other military technology. His parents are suing While his mother’s back was turned for 20 seconds, at most, a toddler disappeared at Margaritaville Resort Biloxi, her lawsuit says. The family had just started their vacation in May 2022 at the resort, a child’s wonderland with an ample indoor arcade, carnival rides perched on an outdoor platform, and swimming pool with water slides and a lazy river. But the getaway ended abruptly and tragically. Kasey Thompson, 2, drowned shortly after his family from Louisiana arrived at Margaritaville. His mother Jaspanique Rogers and father Quartnall Thompson, both of Louisiana, have filed a wrongful-death lawsuit in Harrison County Circuit Court against Margaritaville. They claim the resort was negligent for failing to maintain a safe pool area and prevent the drowning. They are seeking an unspecified amount in damages for the loss of his life and love, his pain and suffering, ******** expenses and loss of future earnings. Drowning is the leading cause of death for children 1-4 years old, according to the Centers for Disease Control, which recommends basic swimming and water safety skills for children. Margaritaville Biloxi denies wrongdoing The lawsuit describes the minutes leading up to Kasey’s death. He was playing on a waterslide near the pool. His mother turned for 15-20 seconds, the lawsuit says, to get a towel. During that time, Kasey disappeared. The pool was crowded, the lawsuit says. The water was murky. “The pool was being guarded by teenage pool attendants who allowed him to get into the pool, where he subsequently drowned,” the lawsuit says. His parents, the lawsuit continues, “believed that the pool was being safeguarded by trained lifeguards and pool attendants who should have (1) never allowed him into the pool and (2) should have seen the deceased toddler struggling in the pool and immediately rescued him and revived him from his drowning event safely and without harm.” The crowded pool and cloudy water slowed his family’s efforts to find Kasey, the lawsuit says. The lawsuit claims Margaritaville was negligent in operating the pool, listing, among other examples: “Overloading” the pool. Failure to adequately train staff to properly supervise the pool. Failing to notice a toddler had gotten into the pool alone. Failure to maintain clear water in the pool. In a court filing responding to the lawsuit, Margaritaville denies any wrongdoing. “Kasey Thompson was left unattended in the swimming pool area and entered the water in close proximity to the closed water slide exit, where he subsequently drowned,” says the response filed by Margaritaville attorney William A. Whitehead Jr. of Hattiesburg.
