  1. Happy Eco News Learning about Geothermal Energy at the Source Reading Time: 3 minutes Learning about geothermal energy at the source This spring, I had the opportunity to visit the Coso Geothermal Plant in Inyo County, California. Although we were unable to enter the plant due to security clearance requirements, we had the privilege of meeting with one of its managers. He provided us with detailed and fascinating information about geothermal energy and the plant’s operations. Having extensively read and written about clean and renewable energy, it was exciting to witness firsthand the geothermal energy production process. I was surprised to learn this energy is harnessed from a dormant volcanic field in California. Nearly all of California’s geothermal electric power generation occurs in regions where volcanic eruptions took place tens of thousands of years ago. The world’s largest geothermal electric power producer is located at the southwest margin of the Clear Lake Volcanic Field. In Southern California, the Imperial Valley Geothermal Area boasts eleven active power plants along the southeastern shore of the Salton Sea. Additionally, the Casa Diablo geothermal power plant is situated on the southwest side of the resurgent dome in the Long Valley Caldera. California’s active volcanoes collectively support the largest geothermal electric generation capacity in the ******* States. As of 2020, 40 operational geothermal power plants were in the state, contributing approximately 6% of California’s in-state electric generation. The Coso Volcanic Field, located in the eastern Sierra Nevada region of California, is a significant geothermal resource with a fascinating geological history. This volcanic field, which spans an area of approximately 150 square miles, is characterized by its numerous lava domes, rhyolite lava flows, and basaltic cinder cones, all indicative of its volcanic past. While the last major eruptive activity in the Coso Volcanic Field occurred around 40,000 years ago, its geothermal activity continues to be of great interest and importance today. The Coso Volcanic Field is situated within the Basin and Range Province, a region known for its tectonic activity and geothermal potential. The field’s volcanic activity is driven by the area’s extensional tectonics, where the Earth’s crust is being pulled apart, creating fractures and allowing magma to ascend. This geological setting provides the heat necessary to maintain high subsurface temperatures, which are essential for geothermal energy production. One of the most significant impacts of the Coso Volcanic Field is its contribution to geothermal energy. The high heat flow and permeability of the rocks in this area make it an ideal location for geothermal energy extraction. The Coso Geothermal Plant, one of the largest and most productive geothermal power plants in the ******* States, capitalizes on this potential. It generates approximately 270 megawatts of electricity to power hundreds of thousands of homes. The plants were constructed from 1987 to 1989 and currently use about 105 production wells to capture underground steam that steam turbines then transform into electricity. This plant is considered green energy because it captures all of the sulfur. It emits 20% of the CO2 compared to a gas turbine and 5% of CO2 compared to coal burning. Initially, the plant was taking the CO2 and putting it back into the ground, but unfortunately, it was backing up the entire process. Looking ahead, the Coso Volcanic Field’s geothermal resources have the potential to play a crucial role in meeting California’s renewable energy goals. The demand for geothermal energy is high across the US, but unfortunately, because the country continues to import oil and gas, it is hard to make the transition to using only renewable energy. Hopefully, as more people become aware of geothermal energy as a sustainable option, the demand for oil and gas will be phased out. It is fascinating to see and learn about where this energy is coming from and how we can utilize natural processes to create renewable energy. 2. Happy Eco News 2024 UN Plastic Treaty Negotiation Results Reading Time: 3 minutes The 2024 UN Plastic Treaty negotiations have reached a critical juncture. The outcome will dictate our future with plastic. The ****** against plastic pollution took a significant step forward last month as the ******* Nations’ Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) on Plastic Pollution concluded its fourth session (INC-4) in Ottawa, Canada. While negotiators grappled with some contentious issues, the week marked a turning point in crafting a global treaty to address the growing environmental crisis. Established in 2022, the INC represents the first major attempt to forge a legally binding agreement to tackle plastic pollution at its source. Previous sessions ***** the groundwork, and INC-4, the 2024 UN Plastic Treaty, saw focused discussions on transforming the draft treaty text into a substantive proposal. This text encompasses the entire lifecycle of plastics, from unsustainable production practices to inadequate waste management and recycling. The urgency for action is undeniable. Decades of plastic pollution have created an ecological disaster. Microplastics have been found in everything from the deepest oceans to Arctic ice, posing a threat to marine ecosystems, food chains, and human health. Studies warn that plastic entering oceans alone could triple by 2040 without intervention. Over 160 nations participated in the 2024 UN Plastic Treaty negotiations in Ottawa, striving to find common ground on critical issues. These included curbing plastic production, establishing effective waste management and circular economy standards, incorporating environmental costs into production, and fostering international cooperation. See also: Manufacturer Accountability with ********* Plastic Registry. “We need a treaty that’s ambitious and visionary but also pragmatic and fair in terms of obligations and timelines for different countries,” stated Gabriela Rivera, the INC chairperson from Ecuador. Disagreements emerged on how to address plastic waste trade regulations, production caps, and financial assistance for developing nations. These disagreements are likely to be a major focus in future negotiations. Despite these challenges, the 2024 UN Plastic Treaty negotiations achieved significant progress. Delegates identified areas of “low-hanging fruit,” such as provisions for plastic waste management and a “just transition” for affected industries. They also agreed to use the compiled work from this session as the basis for future discussions. A crucial step was establishing a legal drafting group to ensure the treaty’s legal clarity. Additionally, the 2024 UN Plastic Treaty Ottawa sessions agreed on two key working groups to address specific challenges. The first group will focus on potential financing mechanisms for implementing the treaty, while the second will analyze criteria for identifying plastic products and chemicals of concern, emphasizing recyclability and reusability. The 2024 UN Plastic Treaty negotiations were divided into five Subgroups based on a Revised Draft Text. These subgroups tackled diverse issues, ranging from the treaty’s preamble and scope to technical elements like primary plastic polymers and problematic plastic products. Highlighting the need for sustainable production and elimination of certain harmful plastics, delegates also debated contentious topics like the treaty’s scope, financing mechanisms, extended producer responsibility (where producers take financial responsibility for managing waste), and the inclusion of primary plastic polymers. Subgroups conducted a first reading of the draft text, proposing revisions and new text in some cases. While some subgroups saw significant progress, others reported varying stages of textual agreement. The session concluded with a call for continued efforts and enhanced cooperation to achieve a comprehensive and legally binding instrument. Delegates from various countries expressed their commitments and concerns. Notably, the ********* Union joined the “Bridge to Busan” initiative, which advocates for sustainable production levels of primary plastic polymers. INC Chair Luis Vayas Valdivieso and other key figures emphasized the critical role of advancing negotiations and delivering effective solutions. Despite the progress, there was a clear sense of urgency and uncertainty about whether a robust treaty would be finalized by the end of 2024. The success of the 2024 UN Plastic Treaty negotiations is a critical step forward. However, the world will watch closely as these discussions continue in South Korea later this year. The future of our oceans, environment, and potentially even human health hangs in the balance. Can negotiators bridge the remaining divides and create a powerful global treaty to combat plastic pollution? I believe so, but only time will tell. The stakes have never been higher. Happy Eco News 15 Eco-Innovations That Will Shape the Sustainable Homes of the Future Reading Time: 4 minutes 15 Eco-Innovations That Will Shape the Sustainable Homes of the Future Sustainable homes are changing the way people live. Gone are the traditional spacious living rooms and dwellings made of asbestos that were once popular for their *****-resistant features. People are choosing to live in ways that are good for the environment, which has led to increasing interest in prefabricated homes, Earthships, straw bales, and tiny homes. Take a detailed ***** into what eco-friendly innovations will shape future homes and how they contribute to environmental friendliness. Energy-Efficient Building Materials Switching to eco-efficient building materials is an excellent way to reduce the sector’s environmental impact. Take a look at some of the innovations in this domain. 1. Cross-Laminated Timber Cross-laminated timber is an engineered wood panel with layers glued to form a rectangular board. It’s lightweight yet durable and easy to install — a beginner-friendly material for DIY roof, floor or wall renovation. Above all, it’s more sustainable than concrete when framing your home. 2. Solar Roof Tiles Using solar roof shingles is another way to integrate solar technology into building a home. Like solar panels, they absorb the sun’s energy and convert it into electricity to power home appliances. They differ in size — solar roof tiles are smaller than those roof cells. Plus, they’re used as a traditional roofing material. Why would people prefer them? They have a more elegant look, and their sleek design gives the impression of a futuristic roof. 3. Hempcrete Hempcrete is made of 90% hemp fibers and 10% lime binder, processed with little water to form a lightweight concrete. Experts see it as a sustainable replacement for carbon-intensive concrete. Besides being plant-based, it releases zero volatile organic compounds or toxins and captures carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Smart Home Technology The marriage of technology and sustainability has led to innovations that help consumers optimize their energy consumption in eco-friendly ways. Houses will modernize with the inclusion of the following. 4. Smart Thermostats Future homes will have a programmable thermostat. They’re equipped with sensors that automatically switch on and off based on occupancy. Previously, your HVAC system would rack up your bill if you forgot to turn it off. Now, a smart thermostat can learn your habits to optimize energy use. 5. Energy Monitoring Systems Electricity is expensive. If you want to get details into your consumption — like how your phone lets you know which apps are draining the battery — install a monitoring system. It offers real-time data that tracks your usage, helping you cut down on utility bills. 6. Automated Lighting Controls A lighting system you can control from a phone using an app or voice assistant will be a significant feature of future living spaces. With just a few taps, you can turn the lights on and off remotely and adjust their brightness. Installing it reduces the time the lights are on based on occupancy, schedule and preferences. Water Conservation Solutions The planet has a lot of water, so you may think it can’t run out. However, only a small fraction of it is fresh, and the rest is in the ocean, which is too salty to drink and grow crops. Modern houses have designs that support water conservation. 7. Greywater Recycling Systems Greywater is wastewater from washing hands, laundry, showering and other daily activities. Sometimes, it’s directly routed to garden irrigation and ******* flushing. However, some homes may install a treatment system. Instead of being diverted to sewers, greywater is treated using centralized or decentralized methods to make it reusable. These systems are a creative way to recycle water, especially in regions where demand greatly overshadows supply. After treatment, it can be repurposed for various indoor activities, like washing clothes. 8. Low-Flow Fixtures A typical way to conserve water is by limiting shower times, which saves five or more gallons of water per wash. An even better method is installing low-flow fixtures. These plumbing tools are specifically designed to limit water waste without compromising functionality. By toning down the pressure in your faucets or leveraging WaterSense-labeled accessories, you can reduce use. 9. Rainwater Harvesting Systems Another source of freshwater is rain. An ideal eco-friendly home has a structure to collect and recycle it for non-potable uses. Doing so helps the environment in several ways. For instance, it reduces erosion in your garden and prevents water run-off. In addition, collecting may help minimize flooding in some areas — not to mention it’ll cut your bills by tens or hundreds of dollars. Net-Zero Energy Homes Future residential spaces will revolutionize sustainable living by achieving the net-zero target. This goal is attainable when all emissions released by all human activities are neutralized. It sounds ambitious but definitely possible, especially in a setting where several innovations can make it a reality. 10. Heat Pump Water Heater Unlike traditional heating systems that rely solely on electricity to warm the water, this type of heater combines two technologies to incorporate sustainability in your abode. It works similarly to your refrigerator but in reverse. It captures heat from the surroundings and channels it into the tank to increase the water’s temperature. A heat pump water heater is two to three times more efficient than conventional heaters, which make up 18% of most US households’ energy usage. When you switch, you can save up to $180 per year. It’s energy-efficient, better for the environment and mitigates your household’s carbon footprint. 11. Solar Panels with Battery Storage By coupling solar panels that collect energy and a battery that stores it, you’ll have a self-sufficient house and a power backup in case of outages. There are four main types of batteries you can pair with cells: Lead acid Lithium-ion Nickel Cadmium Flow batteries 13. Energy-Efficient Appliances Shifting to eco-friendly-labeled appliances can significantly taper electricity usage for everyday tasks. Here are some examples of those eco-friendly tags: Energy Star: This rating means appliances consume less electricity than other models. Cradle to Cradle Certified: The product is safe for human health and the environment. Green Seal: This seal assures consumers the appliances meet rigorous sustainability standards. Future Trends Upcoming innovations can help mold the future of eco-friendly homes. Some of the trends today include the following. 14. Biophilic Design Integration Bringing the outdoors in by adding water features and abundant plants to create green spaces is drawing more people’s attention. Such an eco-friendly design positively affects mental and physical health by encouraging the connection between nature and humans and promoting productivity. 15. Circular Economy Principles The concept of a circular economy will expand outside manufacturing and organizations and into homes. Like technology, the adoption of sustainability will be permanent. People will become more proactive about recycling, reusing, and repurposing their waste. Instead of landfills, kitchen scraps will go into compost, and wastewater will be routed to an in-home recycling system. A circular economy will dominate future homes. Future Homes Will Be More Eco-Friendly Sustainability is a lifestyle many want to pursue in favor of the planet. If you’re looking for ways to make your home environmentally friendly, start by gradually implementing these eco-innovations. By embracing these practices, you can contribute to making the planet a better place for future generations. 4. Happy Eco News Reclaiming the Sea: Transforming Abandoned Fish Farms into Vibrant Coastal Havens Reading Time: 3 minutes Reclaiming the sea: Transforming abandoned fish farms into vibrant coastal havens On a small beach in Ithaca, where abandoned fish farm pipes once littered the shore, a lively beach bar now thrives. The soft murmur of waves is accompanied by the sound of music, laughter, and the clinking of glasses. Beach chairs dot the sand, and the once-polluted waters are now clear and inviting. This transformation is a testament to the power of community and the potential for revitalizing our seas. It is a story of hope and renewal, mirroring the broader mission of reclaiming abandoned fish farms along the Western Greece coast. The Journey Begins As the Communication Manager for the Healthy Seas Foundation and an ardent lover of the sea, I embarked on an extraordinary mission in May 2024. In collaboration with Hyundai and Ghost Diving, we launched an extensive operation to clean up the waters of Western Greece, which were polluted and made hazardous by abandoned fish farms. This mission was not just about removing debris; it was about restoring life to these waters and rekindling the vibrancy of coastal communities. A Collaborative Effort The clean-up operation was a colossal endeavour involving volunteers from all over the world. Witnessing such diverse groups come together for a common cause was inspiring. It underscored the universal appeal of protecting our environment and people’s deep connection with the sea. These volunteers’ dedication and hard work were truly remarkable, and their efforts played a crucial role in the mission’s success. The Challenges and Rewards Cleaning up the abandoned fish farms presented significant challenges. The sheer size of the fish farming nets and the rings that held them was staggering. Once left to degrade, these structures posed serious threats to marine life. Removing them required meticulous effort and coordination. We successfully removed 42.7 tons of marine litter throughout the initial operation, including large nets, surface structures like rings and cages, polystyrene, and various plastics. But the rewards were equally immense. As we reclaimed the waters, we witnessed the immediate positive impact on the marine environment. Fish and other marine life could now navigate these waters without the risk of being trapped in abandoned nets. Coastal areas once marred by pollution began to show signs of rejuvenation, attracting both marine life and human activity. Recycling for a Sustainable Future An essential part of our mission is ensuring that the collected marine litter is recycled. All the debris will be processed locally, and the fishing nets will be sent to Healthy Seas’ partner Aquafil. These nets and other nylon waste will be recycled into new nylon yarn for products. This approach keeps materials in the flow, avoiding the extraction of new resources and turning trash into valuable raw materials, thanks to Aquafil and the textile brands that utilize this sustainable yarn. Collecting mairne litter. Image: Cor Kuyvenhoven The Importance of Swift Action One critical lesson from this experience is the importance of swift action. Abandoned structures from fish farms quickly deteriorate, breaking into smaller pieces that multiply and wash ashore, polluting beaches. This attracts even more litter, as people feel free to dump their trash, broken boats, bags, and bottles in these already neglected areas. It’s a vicious cycle: abandonment attracts more abandonment, and trash begets more trash. That’s why addressing these situations promptly is crucial before they escalate and become even more challenging to manage. A Tale of Transformation The transformation of the small beach in Ithaca is a perfect illustration of the impact of our efforts. In our previous missions in 2021 and 2022, we cleaned up ghost farms in the area, removing massive pipes and other debris. This clean-up paved the way for life to return to the beach. Today, it hosts a vibrant beach bar where locals and tourists alike enjoy the reclaimed space. The clear waters and clean shores have brought back not only marine life but also a sense of community and enjoyment. This little beach bar tells a ******* story of what can be achieved through determination and collaboration. It symbolizes the potential for other abandoned sites to be transformed into vibrant, life-filled spaces. As we look forward to the results of our latest clean-up efforts in May 2024, we can only imagine the positive changes that will follow. Hope for the Future The success of this mission is a beacon of hope, demonstrating that with collective effort, we can reclaim our seas from pollution and abandonment. Healthy Seas and Hyundai are committed to continuing this vital work, addressing more locations and raising awareness about marine conservation. As we continue our efforts, I am filled with optimism. The reclaimed waters are not just cleaner; they are brimming with life and potential. The beaches and coastal areas are once again places of joy and beauty, ready to be enjoyed by future generations. Together, we can make a difference, one clean-up at a time, and ensure a healthier, more sustainable future for our oceans and our communities. Music and laughter now replace the silence of abandonment, marking the triumphant return of life to these precious coastlines. Clean waters. 5. Happy Eco News 9 Hidden Weak Spots in Your Home That Are Leaking Energy Reading Time: 4 minutes 9 Hidden Weak Spots in Your Home That Are Leaking Energy As environmental stewards, it’s important to champion sustainability and avoid energy waste. However, it’s hard to tackle certain issues that contribute to the problem when they’re hidden. The home has many vulnerable weak spots that ***** energy. Why Are Energy Leaks Bad? Energy leaks are detrimental because they waste crucial resources. Heaters and coolers usually have to work twice as hard in order to compensate for the electricity escaping from the home. The power grid traditionally comes from burning fossil fuels, which the world already has a limited supply of. Electric leaks can also have plenty of financial consequences. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, about one-third or more of building power use is wasted at the expense of $150 billion annually. Households already find it challenging to pay their utility bills, so covering excess electricity is even more of a burden. The best way to address energy leaks is to identify and care for them. Prioritize efficiency to strengthen the home and minimize power use. Secondary solutions would be to utilize renewable power options. Solar panels, wind turbines and similar systems can lessen dependence on the traditional grid and create a more sustainable future. Hidden Weak Spots Numerous hidden weak spots in the home unknowingly create energy waste. From windows to doors, here are the locations to look out for and efficient solutions you can use. 1. Windows Windows achieve efficiency by bringing natural light into the home, minimizing reliance on artificial fixtures. Unfortunately, poorly installed frames and cracked glass can allow heat or cold to escape. Aside from impacting thermal comfort, this can also drive up utility costs. Try to inspect your windows by hovering your hand over the pane. If a draft is coming through even when it’s closed, you may have to reinforce the space with weatherstripping. You can also invest in window replacements for better insulation. 2. Doors Doors are another opening to be wary of. The bottoms of these structures usually have a gap for easy opening and closing where air can slip through. Interior doors can let it escape from room to room, but the front door lets it all out completely. You can tell you have a door ***** if there are floor drafts or by visually checking them. The ******* the gap, the more waste created. Weatherstripping can usually take care of those cavities and prevent electric leaks. If the bottom part is your only problem, you can invest in and attach a door draft stopper. 3. Walls A house’s walls should be the main assistant in power conservation, but there are defects that may do the opposite. For instance, cracks can allow air and water to seep in. You also need to look out for damp walls, which can significantly raise energy consumption through heating and cooling. Consider caulking wall cracks as early as possible. Its waterproof features prevent water from oozing out. As a bonus, you can keep away insects that would’ve caused further damage. If you have damp walls, look into efficient wall-drying processes. Most procedures would likely take two days or so, depending on the wall thickness and initial moisture content. If your property is fresh from water damage, seek professional help. 4. Air Ducts The HVAC system is crucial for distributing temperature and keeping the home’s humidity under control. Unfortunately, broken air ducts can transfer the air to unwanted areas, which wastes more power in the long run. Fix your duct system by sealing off the registers and checking for leaks. Some people utilize a smoke machine for a visual clue of where the air is escaping. You can use duct tape and insulation material to cover the holes. 5. Garage The garage is an underrated part of the home, with plenty of potential to ***** electricity. If the walls and doors aren’t reinforced properly, indoor air and temperatures can still escape. A garage can be easy to overlook, but every time you leave through it translates to energy leaks. Invest in quality insulation to avoid heat loss during the winter. It’s also ideal for summer to keep air conditioning efficient. It may be wise to check out garage door replacements as well. Make sure you find one with a high R-value so it provides better thermal resistance. Get a professional to measure, fit, and install the door to avoid any future leaks. 6. Electrical Outlets Electrical switches and outlets are another sneaky feature that lets air out and about. The main reason is these receptacles aren’t designed or installed to be airtight. Holes are drilled to allow the wires to pass through, and they can often be too large. The best fix for these is to install junction box covers. These PVC barriers offer an enclosure for electrical wiring and keep air leaks at bay. They also help protect the people and animals around them by minimizing electrical exposure. 7. Attic Hatch Many homeowners love to use the attic as storage or as a secondary room. However, you need to beware of the power leaks it can offer. An access hatch like pull-down stairs can usually let air from the rest of the house escape upwards. To address this, minimize going up these entrances. Fewer openings mean fewer opportunities for air to come out. You can also reinforce the edges with weatherstripping for good measure. If you really want to use the space regularly, call in a specialist who can renovate it. Ask for an insulated and sturdy attic hatch. 8. Basement Another area homeowners like to repurpose and utilize is the basement. Since it’s under the home, there’s plenty more space. However, the area where the cement contacts the wood frame of the house contains gaps where air escapes and creates energy waste. One initial solution to avoiding leaks is to keep your basement door insulated to prevent indoor air from traveling downward. As for the foundation, it’s important to use sealants adjacent to the rim joists. Some construction specialists utilize sheeting, but you can temporarily cover them with cloths until specialists come. 9. Chimney The chimney is helpful for pulling smoke from your fireplace. That said, some of the heat can also travel upwards and escape. While this regulates the temperature, homeowners should close off the opening when the fireplace is unused or they want to keep the environment as is. To do this, you need to take out the chimney cap and use it as a measurement to cut out sheet metal. Set this piece at the top of the chimney, with the cap placed over it. Secure everything with caulk to avoid further leaks. You can also put foam insulation inside the chimney to avoid the extra cavity. Strengthen Your Home Houses have many hidden weak spots, but it’s easier to look for them and make repairs when conscious of these areas. Check out the locations above and fortify your home against energy leaks. These endeavors will contribute to power efficiency in the long run, safeguarding your household and the planet. 8. Happy Eco News The Natural Wonders of the Mesquite Tree Reading Time: 3 minutes The mesquite tree: so much more than a barbecue ingredient. When you think about mesquite, your first thought might be of the wood used to add flavor to grilled foods. While this is a well-known use, mesquite is much more than a barbecue ingredient. This plant is remarkably resilient, thriving in extremely arid and dry conditions. My fascination with the mesquite tree began after visiting ****** Valley this spring, where the vibrant yellow flowers from the mesquite stood out against the dry desert landscape, compelling me to learn more. There are over 40 species of mesquite plants native to the arid regions of the Americas. As members of the pea family, mesquite trees are legumes and can fix nitrogen in the soil through a symbiotic relationship with bacteria in their root nodules, which enhances soil fertility. Mesquite trees are known for their resilience and ability to withwithstand the extreme temperatures and dryness of environments like ****** Valley. And for those unfamiliar with ****** Valley, temperatures can get up to 54 degrees Celsius (130 degrees Fahrenheit) with little to no rain. In response to these extremes, mesquite trees have developed root systems extending 80 to 100 feet deep, allowing them to access water far below the surface. These trees thrive in poor soils, endure extreme temperatures, and survive in areas with as little as 10 inches of annual rainfall. During particularly dry periods, mesquite seeds can remain dormant for decades, waiting for sufficient moisture. This ability to stay dormant for extended periods improves their chances of wide distribution and successful germination. Due to their resilience and adaptability, some mesquite species can live for over 200 years in the wild. During winter, mesquite trees enter a dormant state, appearing lifeless from a distance. In the spring, they burst forth with bright green leaves and yellow flowers on their upper branches. At the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes in ****** Valley National Park, where these trees are commonly found, mesquite trees must twist and grow uniquely to avoid being ******* by sand. Mesquite trees can elongate their stems and branches upward as the sand accumulates around them, effectively climbing the dunes. This process allows them to keep their foliage above the sand and continue accessing sunlight for photosynthesis. Their deep root systems anchor them firmly, providing stability and reaching water sources far below the surface. Mesquite trees provide essential habitats for a variety of animals, including coyotes, ravens, roadrunners, lizards, rodents, and insects. These animals rely on mesquite trees for both food and shelter. The mesquite tree pods are edible and have been a crucial food source for indigenous peoples for thousands of years. These pods can be ground into flour or used to make sweet syrup. Mesquite seeds were a staple in the diet of the Native Americans who once inhabited ****** Valley. They would grind the pods into coarse flour and, after winnowing, grind the seeds again into fine flour. Both flours were used to make cakes, turning late spring and summer into a time of abundance. The sap extracted from the mesquite tree has medicinal uses, including the treatment of headaches, eye disorders, inflammation, dysentery, stomachaches, and sore throats. Additionally, the roots can be used to treat wounds, colic, and diarrhea. Mesquite wood is incredibly dense and hard, making it highly valued for furniture, flooring, and barbecue wood. It burns slowly and produces a sweet, smoky flavour, popular in grilling and smoking meats. Mesquite trees are abundant in ****** Valley and can often be overshadowed by the area’s many captivating natural attractions. However, their resilience in this unique environment makes them deserving of our attention. In our evolving climate, mesquite trees could potentially serve as models for adapting to climate change. We can learn a lot from nature if we just take the time to observe it and understand it. The post The Natural Wonders of the Mesquite Tree appeared first on Happy Eco News. View the full article
  9. Happy Eco News Are EVs Sustainable? Reading Time: 4 minutes Are EVs Sustainable? Spoiler: yes, EVs are more sustainable in almost every circumstance. Are EVs Sustainable? The ****** against climate change demands concrete solutions, and electric vehicles (EVs) are no longer a futuristic fantasy but a practical step towards a cleaner future. While some might cling to misconceptions about EVs, a closer look reveals a compelling case supported by facts: EVs significantly reduce emissions and offer environmental benefits throughout their lifespan. See also: North America’s First 500 kW Charging Station. Firstly, let’s address the most significant advantage of EVs: their lack of tailpipe emissions. Unlike gasoline and diesel cars that spew harmful pollutants like nitrogen oxides and particulate matter, EVs produce none while driving. This translates to cleaner air, especially in urban areas plagued by smog. A study by the Union of Concerned Scientists found that even in regions with the dirtiest power grids, EVs produced less greenhouse gas than gasoline cars [Hidden Content]. This is because they don’t directly contribute to greenhouse gas emissions that trap heat and contribute to global warming. However, it’s fair to acknowledge the environmental impact of EV production when asking are EVs sustainable? The complex lithium-ion batteries in EVs require resource extraction and manufacturing processes that can be energy-intensive. This can lead to a higher carbon footprint compared to a brand-new gasoline car. An Argonne National Laboratory study found that EV manufacturing can generate around 15,870 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions, compared to 6,431 pounds for a gasoline car. Here’s where the concept of a life cycle assessment (LCA) comes in. An LCA asking “are EVs Sustainable” considers a vehicle’s environmental impact throughout its lifespan, from manufacturing to use and eventual disposal. While the initial production might tip the scales slightly towards gas cars, EVs quickly catch up. Why are EVs Sustainable? Because EVs are essentially emission-free during operation. They don’t release pollutants every time they drive, a stark contrast to gasoline cars that contribute to smog and greenhouse gases with every mile. Studies by the ********* Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) show that EVs typically become cleaner than gas cars after driving between 17,500 and 21,300 miles (which is 1.5 to 2 years of average driving) [source needed]. Considering most cars last a decade or more, this translates to a significant reduction in emissions over an EV’s lifetime. Furthermore, EVs require less maintenance compared to gasoline cars. With fewer moving parts and no need for oil changes or spark plug replacements, EVs generate less hazardous waste and require fewer resource-intensive maintenance procedures. This translates to a smaller environmental footprint compared to gasoline cars that constantly need parts and fluids replaced. Are EVs sustainable? An MIT study found that EVs generate about 1.5 times less life cycle maintenance waste compared to gasoline vehicles. Reduced Production of Pollutants and Waste: Gasoline cars require a variety of routine maintenance procedures that generate pollutants and hazardous waste. Oil changes, for example, involve draining used oil, which can contaminate soil and water if not disposed of properly. EVs eliminate this entirely, as they don’t require lubricants like oil. Additionally, spark plug replacements and other procedures involving worn-out parts contribute to waste streams that need management. With fewer moving parts, EVs experience less wear and tear, reducing the need for such replacements and the associated waste. Lower Resource Extraction and Use: The maintenance needs of gasoline cars necessitate a constant stream of replacement parts and fluids. Manufacturing these parts requires extracting raw materials and using energy-intensive processes. EVs, with their simpler design and extended service intervals, require fewer parts and fluids throughout their lifespan. This translates to a lower demand for resource extraction and processing, reducing the environmental impact associated with these activities. Fewer Service-Related Emissions: Maintenance procedures for gasoline cars often involve activities that release emissions into the air. For instance, draining used oil or replacing fuel filters can release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that contribute to smog formation. EVs require less frequent servicing, and the procedures themselves typically don’t involve VOC emissions, leading to a cleaner overall maintenance process. While EV technology boasts significant environmental advantages, challenges remain, particularly in battery recycling. Currently, EV battery recycling is less efficient than recycling components from gasoline cars. This inefficiency stems from several factors: Complex Battery Chemistry: Lithium-ion batteries, the dominant technology in EVs, contain a complex mix of materials like lithium, cobalt, nickel, and manganese. Separating these materials for reuse in new batteries requires sophisticated techniques that are still under development. Lack of Standardized Processes: The EV industry is relatively young, and there’s no single, universally adopted method for EV battery recycling. This inconsistency makes it difficult to scale up recycling efforts and ensure efficient material recovery. Economic Viability: Extracting valuable materials from used batteries can be expensive compared to ******* ore mining. This can make recycled materials less cost-competitive, hindering the economic viability of large-scale recycling operations. However, significant progress is being made to address these challenges. Here are some promising advancements: Investment in New Technologies: Companies like Redwood Materials and Tesla are pouring resources into developing innovative recycling technologies. These technologies aim to break down batteries more efficiently and recover a higher percentage of valuable materials for reuse. Focus on Sustainability: Automakers are increasingly incorporating design features that make batteries easier to disassemble and recycle. This focus on “design for recyclability” will be crucial for establishing a more sustainable EV battery lifecycle. Collaborative Efforts: Industry collaborations and government initiatives are fostering research and development in battery recycling. These partnerships aim to create standardized recycling processes and make recycled materials more economically attractive. While EV battery recycling ******** a work in progress, the rapid pace of innovation offers promising solutions. By overcoming these challenges, we can further reduce the environmental impact of EVs and create a closed-loop battery lifecycle for a more sustainable future. Are EVs Sustainable? While EVs aren’t perfect, they represent a significant step forward compared to gasoline cars. Their lack of tailpipe emissions, coupled with reduced maintenance needs, make them a powerful tool in combating climate change. As battery technology advances, the electricity grid gets cleaner, and recycling processes improve, the environmental benefits of EVs will only become more pronounced. By embracing EVs and fostering innovation, we can create a cleaner future, one charged by sustainability. The post Are EVs Sustainable? appeared first on Happy Eco News. View the full article
  10. Happy Eco News Goats Graze Away Invasive Plant Species at Niagara Parks: A Sustainable Approach to Restoration Reading Time: 4 minutes Goats graze away invasive plant species at Niagara Parks: A sustainable approach to restoration At Gonder’s Flats in Fort Erie, Ontario, goats enjoying a meal has become a greener method for managing invasive species. Niagara Parks, an independent agency of the Ontario government responsible for maintaining the Niagara River corridor, has initiated a pilot project as part of its ongoing wetland restoration efforts. This project involves using goats to graze and naturally control invasive Phragmites. The Green Grazers initiative, which began in June 2024, utilizes local goats to help manage Phragmites, one of Canada’s top widespread invasive plant species. This sustainable, chemical-free method pushes the boundaries of sustainable land management strategies in government organizations. The Green Grazers Initiative The Green Grazers Initiative is a weeklong pilot project that began with the efforts of two Niagara Parks employees, who imagined a more sustainable land management method. Victoria Kalenuik, Environmental Planning Technician, and Corey Burant, Manager of Lands and Stewardship, sought to tackle the invasive Phragmites problem at Gonder’s Flats while not harming its sensitive wetlands. The initiative involves sourcing local farmers to borrow their goat herds to graze on and control the overgrown Phragmites. This project will provide data about the viability of goat grazing to maintain sensitive environments and reduce the number of invasive species across its parkland to Niagara Parks. Phragmites, a perennial reed grass, is one of Canada’s most notorious invasive species. Also known as the ********* Common Reed, it originates in Eurasia and thrives in northern climates and wetlands. The invasive Phragmites are categorized as restricted under the Ontario Invasive Species Act and have been known for damaging ecosystems in Ontario for decades. Between 2010 and 2017, phragmites spread by almost 30 percent in Ontario. “The issue with an invasive species, like Phragmites, is the plant’s tall grass-like structure grows densely. The plant becomes a monoculture, shading out the ability for native wetland plants to grow. It releases toxins from its roots into the soil to stop the growth of and ***** surrounding plants,” Niagara Parks Environmental Planning Technician Victoria Kalenuik says, and adds, “With sensitive wetlands, like Gonder’s Flats, there needs to be an aggressive dynamic approach to tackle this invasive species before it takes over.” Fortunately, goats are natural grazers whose diet includes invasive plants, making them ideal for this task. By using this eco-friendly method of land management, Niagara Parks avoids the need for herbicides, thereby reducing the impact of land management on the environment. Corey Burant, Niagara Parks’ Manager of Lands and Stewardship, has extensive experience with innovative land management techniques. He states that the goats are being monitored and provided with water and shade on-site. He explains several benefits to using goats to assist with invasive species removal. “By utilizing local goats for this chemical-free land management, the goats offer many benefits to the wetland, such as improved soil health by naturally tilling the soil with their hooves, promoting aeration and enhancing seed germination for native plants,” he says. “In addition, goats require minimal infrastructure and can graze on terrain that might be difficult or dangerous for machinery to access. Due to their lighter footprint, goats have reduced soil compaction and lower the risk of damage to the natural landscape. This makes them ideal for sensitive environments like wetlands.” Niagara Parks predicts the initiative will significantly improve Gonder’s Flats’ soil health and biodiversity while engaging the community in learning about this unique conservation effort. Gonder’s Flats Grazing Goats. Image: Niagara Parks The Restoration of Gonder’s Flats Over the past several years, Niagara Parks has been diligently restoring Gonder’s Flats, a severely degraded natural area adjacent to the Niagara River in Fort Erie. This extensive restoration project, initiated in 2014, is a collaborative effort supported by the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority, Ducks Unlimited Canada, Land Care Niagara and the Niagara Community Foundation. Phase three of this extensive wetland restoration and enhancement project is currently underway. It includes excavating a 1.5-hectare (4-acre) pond, hundreds of native plantings and trail upgrades to enhance public access. Educational signage will also be installed, offering visitors insights into the unique ecosystem of Gonder’s Flats. Historical and Ecological Significance Gonder’s Flats, donated to Niagara Parks in the 1930s, holds the potential to become a highly functional wetland due to its soil characteristics and vegetation. This restoration project aims to improve water quality, support local biodiversity, protect at-risk species, prevent erosion and flooding and enhance climate resiliency. The area will also provide engaging recreational opportunities for the community. The restoration of Gonder’s Flats is part of a more significant effort to address the Niagara River’s status as a degraded Great Lakes Area of Concern. Since 1987, considerable actions have been taken to restore, protect and enhance the Niagara River ecosystem. The Gonder’s Flats project was prioritized due to the shared vision and strong partnerships forged through the Niagara River Remedial Action Plan Program. Niagara Parks Prescribed Burns. Image Niagara Parks Looking Ahead to Tackle Invasive Species As the current construction phase continues into the fall, the restored area at Gonder’s Flats will gradually naturalize, providing long-term ecological benefits. The Green Grazers Initiative is just one example of Niagara Parks’ innovative approaches to achieving its environmental goals. Victoria and Corey also lead the Prescribed ***** Program at Niagara Parks. To mimic the natural process of *****, prescribed burning has been developed as an effective tool to manage natural areas. ***** helps control the spread of invasive species, encourages the germination of dormant native seeds within the soil and returns essential nutrients to the earth. 21. Happy Eco News How Accents Can Shape Perceptions Reading Time: 3 minutes How Accents Can Shape Perceptions Accents are more than just ways of speaking; they can significantly shape how we perceive others. Any accent other than the standard accent produces a different response in the listener, leading to judgments about the speaker. This response to accented speech is deeply ingrained and can have far-reaching implications. Let’s explore why this is problematic and what can be done about it. The Role of Accent Softening Online One tool that has gained popularity in recent years is accent softening online training. These services offer training and techniques to help individuals modify their accents, often to sound more like the standard accent. While this can be useful for some, it also highlights a broader issue: the societal pressure to conform to a particular way of speaking. Instead of focusing solely on changing how people speak, we should also address the biases that lead to these pressures in the first place. Why Accents Matter Accents carry a lot of weight in social interactions. They are tied to our identities and can reveal information about our background, education, and even social status. However, because of these associations, people often make snap judgments based on how someone speaks. These judgments can be both positive and negative, but they are rarely fair. For example, someone with a non-standard accent might be perceived as less intelligent or competent, even though their accent has no bearing on their abilities. This bias can affect various aspects of life, including job opportunities, social interactions, and educational prospects. The Problem with Accent Bias Accent bias is problematic for several reasons. Firstly, it leads to discrimination. People with non-standard accents might find it ******* to get hired or promoted, not because of their skills but because of how they speak. This form of bias is subtle yet pervasive, often going unnoticed but having significant impacts. Secondly, accent bias can lead to social exclusion. Individuals with different accents might feel marginalized or less accepted in certain groups. This can affect their self-esteem and overall well-being. It also limits the diversity of voices and perspectives in any given setting, which can stifle creativity and innovation. Changing Perceptions Changing how we perceive accents requires a multifaceted approach. Here are some steps that can help: Raising Awareness: Educating people about accent bias is a crucial first step. Understanding that our judgments about accents are often unfounded can help reduce prejudice. This can be done through workshops, training sessions, and inclusive policies in workplaces and schools. Promoting Inclusivity: Creating environments where all accents are valued can help counteract bias. This means encouraging diverse voices and ensuring that everyone has an equal opportunity to speak and be heard. Inclusive communication practices, such as active listening and avoiding interrupting, can make a big difference. Celebrating Diversity: Highlighting the richness that different accents bring to our communities can help shift perceptions. This can be done through media representation, cultural events, and public speaking opportunities that showcase a variety of accents. Providing Support: For those who want to modify their accents for personal or professional reasons, support should be available. However, this should be a choice, not a necessity. Services like accent softening online can be beneficial, but they should be part of a broader effort to embrace linguistic diversity. Embracing Linguistic Diversity Embracing linguistic diversity means recognizing the value of different ways of speaking. Accents are a natural part of language and culture, and they enrich our interactions. By moving away from the idea that there is one “correct” way to speak, we can create more inclusive and equitable societies. Encouraging linguistic diversity also means challenging stereotypes and assumptions. It involves being open-minded and willing to learn from others. When we listen without judgment, we can appreciate the unique perspectives that different accents bring. Conclusion Accents have a powerful influence on how we perceive others. While tools like accent softening online can help individuals navigate accent bias, the larger goal should be to address the root causes of this bias. By raising awareness, promoting inclusivity, celebrating diversity, and providing support, we can work towards a world where all voices are valued equally. Embracing linguistic diversity not only enriches our social interactions but also fosters a more just and inclusive society. 25. Happy Eco News Citizen Science: The Gateway to Protecting our Planet Reading Time: 4 minutes Citizen science: The gateway to protecting our planet Citizen science allows anyone to get involved in research projects with minimal experience required. Citizen science can include monitoring ocean tides, analyzing photos from trail cameras, and looking for monarch butterfly larvae. Citizen science has been used for well over a century and offers many benefits to researchers and scientists. These benefits include research that can be conducted over a larger area and for a longer ******* of time. Additionally, data collection costs are reduced with the involvement of citizen scientists. Citizen scientists are able to aid researchers in better understanding our planet and get engaged in important issues. I work for a nonprofit called ilili that specializes in shark and ray research in Honduras. The word for “shark” in the native Miskito language is ilili, which is where our organization gets its name. The indigenous Miskito communities live on the eastern Caribbean coast of Honduras, one of our main field sites in Honduras. At ilili, much of our research depends on the involvement of the community and citizen scientists. We’ve partnered with other local non-profit organizations to create databases of shark sightings and spotted eagle ray sightings in the Bay Islands of Honduras. I’ve been working on our spotted eagle ray database for over a year. Spotted eagle rays (Aetobatus narinari) are found in the Atlantic Ocean and are classified as endangered by the IUCN. They are part of the eagle ray family and well known for their distinct spot patterns on their dorsal side. In Honduras, rays are not protected under any legislation and are often targeted for meat in coastal artisanal fisheries. Spotted eagle rays are often caught in gillnets, and despite their endangered status, little is known about them in Honduras. With the help of local citizen scientists in Roatán and Utila, Honduras, we’ve been able to create a database of spotted eagle rays and learn more about how they use and return to habitats in Roatán and Utila. Here’s some insight into how the project works and what we’ve learned: We’ve been collecting photos of spotted eagle rays taken by citizen scientists for about two years now. Anyone who is able to take a photo of a spotted eagle ray in the Bay Islands is able to share it with us to understand this endangered species better. Most of our photos come from SCUBA divers, but some folks get lucky and are able to take a photo of a spotted eagle ray from a dock or while snorkelling. Spotted eagle rays each have a unique spot pattern, like a fingerprint. We used their spots to create a photo-identification database of spotted eagle rays in the Bay Islands of Honduras. We fingerprinted their pelvic fins (located near the base of their tail) with a photo-identification software called I3S Spot. This software allows us to find photos of the same individual, which are called resightings. We’ve identified 180 unique individuals and of those 180 individuals, 35 rays have been resighted. Resightings allow us to understand the times of year and geographical areas that individual rays may frequent. Other researchers throughout the Caribbean have created similar spotted eagle ray databases with the help of citizen scientists. Creating a master database for all spotted eagle rays in the Caribbean will allow researchers to determine if and how rays are traveling across the Caribbean. Understanding the migration patterns of spotted eagle rays is key to establishing proper policies to protect this endangered species. Initially, we thought spotted eagle rays were travelling between the islands of Roatán and Utila. The islands are less than 50 kilometers apart, and spotted eagle rays have been documented to travel much further distances. However, after analyzing 333 sightings of spotted eagle rays, we have never seen the same individual ray reported in both Roatán and Utila. This data is crucial to understanding the movements of spotted eagle rays and offering protection from their threats. We also incentivize people to submit photos of spotted eagle rays by inviting those who submitted the first unique sighting of a ray to name their ray. Once the photo has been processed and fingerprinted, we reach out to our citizen scientists to let them know if we’ve seen this ray before or if it’s a new individual they get to name. Mr. Ray, a spotted eagle ray. Image: James Wilson Mr. Ray, pictured above, was named by one of our citizen scientists, Elise Head. Mr. Ray is a male ray we’ve seen 11 times from October 2021 to February 2024 throughout the island of Roatán. On the island of Roatán, we have a total of 26 rays that have been seen multiple times. On the island of Utila, there are 9 rays that have been seen multiple times. In a world facing many environmental threats, we need everyone to participate in science to help us better understand the wide array of organisms that call this planet home. A better understanding of threatened species is needed to create effective policies to protect them. I encourage everyone to get involved in citizen science. Zooniverse is a great website to use to find projects that may interest you. Many projects involve analyzing images and can be done from anywhere in the world. A few examples of current projects include counting the number of penguins in images taken by drones, identifying chimps, elephants, and leopards from videos, and examining underwater photos of beluga whales to determine **** and age. If you’re looking for something more hands-on, reach out to local nonprofits to see if they have any projects you could help out with. No matter your background, you can make a positive impact by becoming a citizen scientist.
