Resource shortages and supply chain bottlenecks have led to procurement issues for essential materials like wood, steel, and plastic. As demand rises, innovative solutions are needed to address these pressing concerns. US urban mining, a concept gaining traction in the ******* States and globally, offers a promising approach to these challenges. One promising approach gaining traction is US urban mining, which views existing buildings and infrastructure as valuable repositories of raw materials. This strategy bridges the gap between current construction practices and a fully circular economy, where materials are continuously reused and recycled. Dirk Hebel, an architect and professor of design and sustainable building at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), explains that urban mining involves tapping into these “urban mines” to extract and reprocess secondary raw materials for new construction projects. Unlike primary raw materials sourced directly from nature, secondary materials are recovered from recycled sources, such as steel reclaimed from demolished structures. The potential impact of US urban mining is significant. According to Maria Krautzberger, president of the Federal Environment Agency in Germany, the country’s material assets amount to approximately 50 billion tons, with an annual increase of 10 tons per inhabitant. These resources, accumulated over years in buildings, infrastructure, and durable goods, represent an immense opportunity for future generations, particularly in resource-scarce countries like Germany that rely heavily on imported raw materials. However, implementing US urban mining practices presents several challenges. Current building designs often fail to consider end-of-life scenarios, making material recovery difficult and energy-intensive. The prevailing “take, make & waste” economic model has resulted in irreversible material compounds that are either inseparable or prohibitively expensive to recycle. The construction industry must adopt new design principles that prioritize recyclability and maintainable value chains to address these issues and move towards a true circular economy. This shift requires careful planning and cataloging of building materials to ensure their suitability for future recycling and reuse. A pioneering tool in this field is the Urban Mining Index (UMI), developed by Dr. Anja Rosen from the University of Wuppertal. The UMI provides a quantitative method for assessing the recycling potential of buildings, offering valuable insights for urban mining design. This index evaluates which building materials are suitable for reuse or recycling in future life cycles and calculates the proportion of circular building materials in a structure. The UMI has already been applied to real-world projects, demonstrating its practical value. A notable example is the renovation and extension of the historic town hall in Korbach, Germany. This project, designed by ARGE agn heimspiel-architekten and commissioned by the city of Korbach, incorporated urban mining principles from the outset. Dr. Rosen developed the urban mining concept for the Korbach town hall project and analyzed it using the UMI during the pre-design phase. The old extension, a concrete building from the 1970s, was treated as a “raw material mine.” Through careful planning and **********, about two-thirds of the demolished building materials were successfully reintegrated into the material cycle in various quality grades. The deconstruction process was meticulously planned to ensure clean material separation. Recovered materials found new purposes ranging from backfilling old foundations to use in structural concrete and facade elements. The new extension’s facade provides a visible testament to the use of recycled materials. Exposed concrete was blended with reclaimed mineral materials, including recycled aggregate and brick chips, creating a unique aesthetic that tells the story of the building’s circular design. Throughout the construction process, special attention was paid to combining building materials in ways that would allow for high-quality extraction in the future. This forward-thinking approach ensures that the structure will continue to provide value for generations to come. Dr. Rosen emphasizes the importance of this shift in perspective: “We, as architects and engineers, are building today with the resources of future generations. To promote circular construction, we need to measure, evaluate and optimize circularity rates.” The Korbach town hall project serves as a compelling case study for the potential of urban mining. Happy Eco News How the University of Ottawa is Greening its Campus Reading Time: 3 minutes How the University of Ottawa is greening its campus A few weeks ago, I visited my alma mater, the University of Ottawa in Ontario, Canada. One of the things I appreciated the most about this school is the environmental initiatives they take to make the university greener and more eco-friendly. Their newest projects include adding green roofs and pollinators across the campus. This is part of the Facilities’ Campus Master Plan, which aims to create a campus harmonious with the surrounding ecosystem and increase the amount of functional indoor and outdoor green space. Moreover, the University of Ottawa signed the Nature Positive Universities Pledge, an initiative of the ******* Nations Environment Programme. By signing this pledge, the university is committed to addressing both the climate and biodiversity crises, building more resilient ecosystems, helping nature recover, and limiting climate change. The building standards across facilities have been changed so that all roofs on campus that meet the requirements must be green roofs. The university currently has seven buildings with green roofs, which measure over 4000 square metres. The roofs help to reduce stormwater run-off, cool down buildings and provide shelter for animals and insects. The newest green roofs include seating, walking plants and a variety of hardy native plants and pollinator species. Another one of their new green roofs has a variety of succulent plants. Across the campus, they are replacing concrete areas that serve limited purposes, and due to the recent intense rainstorms, have been contributing to flooding in the university. These areas are being replaced with pollinator plants and fruit trees. The first pollinator garden was created in 2022 by a volunteer who received a grant from the WWF- Canada’s Designing Change for a Living Planet 2022 competition to help improve green spaces on campus. Following this design, engineering students have been involved in helping the Office of Campus Sustainability design pollinator habitats around campus. Today, there are over 30 pollinator-friendly plants, with 4 pear trees, 6 apple trees, raspberry, haskaps and blueberry bushes, with more being added annually. In addition to adding more nature to the campus, these new pollinator and fruit tree/bushes hotspots are gathering points that bring students and staff together and create a sense of community across the campus. Adding fruit trees on campus also benefits the University of Ottawa community, including improved nutrition, stress reduction, educational opportunities, and a stronger connection with nature. The University of Ottawa is also known for bringing nature indoors. Inside their Faculty of Social Sciences building, they have a “Living Wall”, which is a six-story, 77-foot wall that houses over 8200 plants. The Living Wall was designed to increase sustainability by saving water, improving air quality, reducing energy consumption and facilitating maintenance. As the plants grow, the Office of Campus Sustainability cuts off pieces and gives plant propagates away for free to the university community. I was lucky enough to go home with a pothos cutting. Earlier this year, a new version of the Living Wall was unveiled with a floral design created by an Indigenous artist. The wall’s floral design is meant to resemble the beaded floral work Indigenous artists create. The University of Ottawa does a fantastic job creating eco-friendly spaces and taking environmental initiatives. What I’ve mentioned here is only a glimpse into some of their projects. Throughout the year, they offer campus sustainability tours where you can uncover all the hidden environmental gems of the campus. Although I’ve graduated from the University of Ottawa, it does give me pride to know that a university is doing what it can for the environment and that it encourages its community to take action and make change. This public-private partnership brings together major financial institutions, conservation organizations, and government entities to support Brazil’s environmental goals, making it one of the most comprehensive forest restoration programs in the world. The scale of this initiative becomes clearer when compared to other international forest conservation efforts. We are all aware that transport is crucial to functioning, but are there any better or alternative ways to at least have a small impact on reducing pollution?! Of course, there are. Among other things, there is public transportation, which let’s be realistic, is not perfect, but it works. Its disadvantage (especially in big cities or remote areas) is that there are long distances between stops and sometimes it is difficult to connect lines to reach the destination. In response to these challenges, corporations came up with an innovative solution – corporate shuttle programs. Such programs are environmentally friendly but also solve the shortcomings of classic public transport by reducing crowds and car use, all with the aim of sustainability. The Growing Need for Corporate Shuttles in Urban Areas As the population grows, the demand for transportation also grows. It is a little more difficult for public transport to adapt to this because the size of the buses (trams, trains) is what it is, and there are more and more people so crowds are created. Also, it is difficult to cover all areas of residence and work, so some remain deprived of this mode of transportation. But still, the biggest problem is traffic jams which contribute to air pollution. Some corporations recognized these problems and introduced their own service as a solution – shuttle transportation. This type of transportation is not necessarily for employees, but it can also be used for organized transportation that is adapted to the needs of users or perhaps for organized events so that everyone arrives on time. Offering safety and punctuality, they reduce the burden on public transport and traffic jams on city roads. Filling Gaps and Boosting Usage Shuttle transports solve the problem of filling “gaps”, i.e. they cover parts of the city where it is unavailable or poorly accessible. This encourages greater use of public transportation and reduces reliance on private cars which increases relaxation and reduces stress caused by traffic jams. Economic and Social Benefits In addition to all other advantages, shuttle transport also offers an economic one. Employees who use this type of transport save money on fuel and parking. These kinds of programs also create new jobs because they offer coverage of services that are missing and, therefore help employees who use transportation to connect more with each other. Conclusion With the growth of cities and the population, the need for better versions and more cost-effective ways of everything, including transportation, also grows. We can call corporate shuttle transport a new generation of transport, where public and private transport meet, in fact, the best of both options. From reduction of traffic jams, through social and economic profitability, all the way to an ecological and sustainable way that contributes to a greener future – that’s how we can describe this type of transport. Think of how An Inconvenient Truth transformed complex climate science into a narrative that moved millions to action. On a more intimate scale, there’s Marce the Recycler, created by Colombian influencer Sara Samaniego, who shows kids through entertaining videos that environmental action can be both doable and fun. Quality storytelling isn’t optional—it’s essential for connecting with young audiences and inspiring real action. The science behind this approach is fascinating. So, here we are again. After a collective deep breath from environmentalists nationwide, it’s time to assess what Donald Trump’s 2024 election victory means for our environmental future. While he’s flat-out said he will focus on expanding his destructive policies, such as those in the controversial Project 2025, there’s only so much he can do. If you read between the lines, it turns out that maybe Trump doesn’t matter anyway. When I started this website in January 2018, Trump was about a year into his first presidential term, and renewable energy was still just for idealists. It was expensive, somewhat unreliable, and unproven. Well, things have changed: The clean energy sector has created 330,000 new jobs in the US, and thanks to President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), two-thirds of new solar, wind, and battery projects are in Trump-supporting counties. Those red districts are quietly turning a subtle shade of green, both with renewable energy and economically speaking. Trump-favoring districts have received three times as much clean energy investment as Biden-leaning areas, leading 18 *********** House members to advocate for maintaining IRA clean energy tax credits. It seems economic reality has become an unexpected environmental ally, with $265 billion in clean energy projects already announced. Traditionally cautious about environmental commitments, corporate America has undergone a significant transformation in the last 10 years. Most companies have now discovered that sustainability isn’t just for their marketing brochures. It is real and can make or break a company’s reputation. Banks and insurance companies, bastions of ************* thinking, are suddenly taking climate change very seriously, facing mounting pressure to divest from fossil fuels. Many big companies, fearing a legal backlash like the one against big tobacco, are already investing in alternate revenue sources. U.S. companies must choose between leading the clean technology revolution or watching from the sidelines in the global arena. Even the most ardent America-first advocates might struggle to explain why we should surrender technological leadership and early advantage of the IRA to global competitors. They have taught me that working ethically as an outsider in someone else’s world requires not just awareness but also a profound respect for the cultural and spiritual connections that people have to their land and history. However, the question ********: Is this enough? In academia, universities are enhancing indigenous representation through targeted recruitment and support programs, and there are efforts to integrate indigenous knowledge into western scientific research schemes. However, controversies over the misuse of indigenous knowledge persist, and this has intensified calls for more stringent ethical guidelines and truly respectful collaborations. Indigenous students and faculty are leading the charge for curriculum changes and policy reforms, raising the question: what will it take to truly decolonize academia, address historical injustices, and ensure that indigenous voices are central to research and decision-making? As a scholar from a Western academic background, I understand that my position brings inherent biases, privileges, and limitations. My understanding of ethical research is continually evolving, shaped by the learning I’ve gained from indigenous scholars and communities. I acknowledge that this learning is ongoing and that the true leaders in this shift are indigenous voices who have long advocated for change.
