Happy Eco News Citizen Science While Traveling
Reading Time: 3 minutes
Participating in citizen science while traveling can be a fun way to add meaning to a trip.
As environmental concerns escalate and impact everyone across the globe, everyday travelers are stepping up as environmental champions, thanks to citizen science programs facilitated by adventure travel companies. These programs provide a unique opportunity for individuals to fuse their love for exploration with a genuine commitment to environmental preservation.
Citizen science is a collaborative approach in which volunteers, often lacking formal scientific training, assist researchers in data collection, analysis, and public engagement. Depending on the project, citizen science can be done in your city and even in your backyard. However, participating in citizen science while traveling can be a fun way to add meaning to a trip while exploring another area of the world.
When travelers engage in citizen science while on their journeys, they become active participants in data collection and analysis. Depending on the specific project and its objectives, this can take many forms. For example, travelers might collect water samples, observe wildlife behavior, document plant species, or record environmental conditions like temperature and air quality. These observations and data points are then shared with scientists and researchers, who use them to further their understanding of various ecological processes and phenomena.
One key advantage of citizen science while traveling is its accessibility. Participants typically do not need specialized training or equipment to get involved, making it inclusive and suitable for individuals of all backgrounds and experience levels. Additionally, citizen science projects often offer opportunities for hands-on learning and engagement with local ecosystems, enhancing the travelers’ understanding and appreciation of the environments they visit.
Participating in citizen science while traveling embodies the spirit of responsible tourism by encouraging travelers to engage with and give back to the places they visit. The type of involvement a traveler may have will also vary from minimal to high participation.
Exodus Adventure Travels, a travel company that has been around for over 45 years, offers tours focused on exploration and cultural immersion. As a part of their commitment to sustainable travel, the company integrates citizen science while traveling into many of their expeditions. Recently, the company teamed up with NatureMetrics and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to create the eBioAtlas project.
Adventurers on specifically designed citizen science while traveling tours can become citizen scientists by contributing to the revolutionary eBioAtlas project. During these unique trips, travelers are guided to collect water samples from pristine lakes, rivers, or other freshwater sources following the provided protocols. These seemingly ordinary water samples hold a treasure trove of genetic material – environmental DNA, or eDNA.
Tiny traces of skin, scales, or other organic matter shed by creatures living in the water become suspended in the environment. By employing cutting-edge eDNA analysis techniques in laboratories, scientists can unlock this hidden story within the samples. This analysis reveals the species in that particular ecosystem, even those that are elusive or difficult to detect visually.
The data collected from countless citizen scientists worldwide is then meticulously compiled, painting a global picture of species distribution. This information becomes a powerful tool for conservation efforts. It contributes directly to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, a critically important resource that guides conservation priorities by highlighting species facing the greatest risk of extinction.
Furthermore, the data empowers researchers and organizations working on various conservation initiatives. By understanding where species are found and their potential threats, targeted strategies can be developed to protect these irreplaceable creatures and their habitats.
Exodus has 20 citizen science while traveling trips dedicated to collecting water samples. Participants are given eDNA kits to collect the samples, and by simply dipping a test tube into a stream or pond, travelers are making a tangible impact on biodiversity research. When the samples are given back to the company, they are sent back to laboratories for analysis, and then the participants will be told which animals they discovered in their sample and which animals were present during the time of their visit.
Without the help of citizen scientists collecting the samples, the information acquired would not be possible on such a large scale. It is a small contribution to be able to visit a new location and have new experiences. The best part about this citizen science project and others is that any person of any age and educational background can participate. Their samples will have a direct impact on science.
Participating in citizen science while traveling is a great way to see the world while giving back. Next time you plan a trip, consider participating in a citizen science project and actively contribute to protecting our planet.

Happy Eco News Entrepreneur Gabriel D’Alton and His Nonprofit Promoting Sustainability Digitally
Reading Time: 3 minutes
Entrepreneur Gabriel D’Alton and his nonprofit promoting sustainability digitally
My journey to promote digital sustainability began in an unexpected way, and it’s a path that can benefit anyone concerned about our planet. As a young entrepreneur in Vancouver, Canada, I have loved sustainability and technology since I began coding at the age of 11. Soon after, I discovered a way to combine these passions when I learned about the internet’s large environmental impact. This new knowledge led to the creation of Oasis of Change in 2023, a not-for-profit organization aimed at reducing the environmental footprint of the internet.
Understanding the Internet’s Environmental Impact
The internet is a big part of our lives, but it also has a large environmental impact. Running data centres, transmitting data, and keeping websites online use a lot of energy. In 2020, data centres used about 200 terawatt-hours of electricity, almost 1% of the world’s total. The IT sector’s carbon footprint is similar to the aviation industry’s, contributing about 2% of global CO2 emissions. These numbers show that we need to adopt sustainable practices in the digital world.
How Websites Contribute to CO2 Emissions
As a crucial part of the internet infrastructure, websites play a significant role in this environmental impact. Data is transmitted from servers to users’ devices whenever a website is accessed. These servers, housed in data centres, require substantial electricity to operate and cool. According to some estimates, the average website produces about 1.76 grams of CO2 for every page view. For a site with 10,000 monthly page views, that’s 21.12 kilograms of CO2 per month. Large, heavily trafficked websites can produce tons of CO2 annually. This energy consumption contributes directly to carbon emissions, especially if the electricity is generated from non-renewable sources.
Our Core Mission and Values
At Oasis of Change, we are driven by the mission of promoting digital sustainability. Our main initiative, the Web-Ready program, focuses on developing websites that are as environmentally friendly as they are innovative. A portion of the funds generated from Web-Ready supports our environmental partners, Tree-Nation and Plastic Bank, allowing us to contribute to tree planting and plastic reduction efforts globally. Our work has already had tangible impacts: over 8,000 trees have been planted in 30+ countries, and more than 6,700 plastic bottles have been prevented from polluting the oceans.
Web-Ready: Creating Sustainable Websites
Here’s how we make our websites more environmentally friendly:
Optimizing Images: High-resolution images can slow down website performance and increase energy consumption. By optimizing images for the web, we reduce file sizes without compromising quality, leading to faster load times and less energy usage.
Using Tailwind CSS: Tailwind CSS, a utility-first CSS framework, enhances efficiency and performance. It reduces unused CSS and focuses on utility classes, resulting in leaner, faster-loading websites.
Green Hosting with AWS: We host our websites on Amazon Web Services (AWS), benefiting from their commitment to sustainability. AWS aims to power its operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025, helping us develop websites with a lower carbon footprint.
Efficient Coding Practices: Writing clean, efficient code is crucial for reducing a website’s energy demands. Following best coding practices minimises the computational power needed to run our websites.
Content Delivery Networks (CDNs): CDNs distribute content across multiple servers worldwide, reducing the distance data must travel and the energy required to deliver content to users. This results in faster load times and lower energy consumption.
Collaboration as a Pathway to Change
We know that meaningful change can’t happen alone. That’s why collaboration is at the core of what we do. Oasis of Change works with businesses, non-profits, and web development agencies to increase our impact. Every partnership is a chance to promote sustainable practices and inspire others to think about their environmental footprint.
Challenges and Rewards
Integrating sustainability into the digital world comes with challenges. A major obstacle is the reluctance to change existing practices and the initial costs of adopting green technologies. However, the environmental and economic benefits far outweigh these challenges. By leading the way with eco-friendly solutions, we protect the planet and create a more sustainable business model that others can follow.
Looking Forward
As we look to the future, we plan to expand our reach and deepen our impact by exploring new technologies that further reduce website energy consumption and planning more extensive collaborations across different sectors.
To other young entrepreneurs and businesses, I invite you to join us in this vital work, whether through adopting sustainable practices in your operations or supporting environmental initiatives. Every action counts toward building a healthier planet.
Conclusion
Starting Oasis of Change has been one of my life’s most challenging yet rewarding experiences. It has transformed from a simple idea into a movement that drives positive change in the digital and environmental landscapes. As we continue to grow and evolve, our core mission ******** the same: to make the digital world a sustainable space for all.

How SEO Helps Your Business
SEO assists your business in ranking higher on SERPs for relevant searches. An SEO company ensures that when customers look for products or services you provide, your business appears at the top of the search results.
Attracting More Customers
Higher rankings mean more visibility, translating to more potential customers visiting your website. Working with an SEO company Bay Area gives you personalized strategies tailored to the local market, giving you an edge in this competitive area. Here are the essential SEO services offered:
Keyword Research and Strategy
An SEO company Bay Area starts with in-depth keyword research to identify high-value, relevant keywords for your business. For example, a local coffee shop might benefit from targeting keywords like “best coffee in San Francisco” or “Bay Area cafes with free Wi-Fi.” They focus on finding keywords with a good search volume and will likely convert visitors into paying customers.
By analyzing your competitors’ keyword strategies, such as seeing which keywords other local coffee shops rank for, these experts can pinpoint opportunities that give your business an edge. This comprehensive approach ensures that your SEO efforts are both targeted and effective.
Website Optimization
Updating your website for search engines and user experience is crucial. For instance, an e-commerce store might need its product pages optimized with relevant keywords in the title tags and image alt texts. SEO company Bay Area enhances your website’s content by including these keywords.
They also improve your website’s loading speed, mobile-friendliness, and overall technical health. This ensures that your site ranks higher and provides visitors with a smooth, enjoyable experience.

They understand the local culture and trends, which lets them create content that appeals directly to your target audience. Additionally, they develop targeted landing pages designed to convert website visitors into leads, such as a landing page for a new app release that highlights its unique features and benefits.
Local SEO
For businesses in the Bay Area, local SEO is essential. For example, a local bakery might need to optimize its Google My Business listing to show up in searches for “best bakery near me” or “San Francisco birthday cakes.” SEO companies in Bay Area optimize your GMB listing to ensure you rank higher in local searches.
They build high-quality citations from relevant Bay Area directories and websites, such as local food blogs or business directories, boosting your visibility in local search results. This local focus helps attract nearby customers looking for your products or services.
Link Building Strategies
Link building is a crucial SEO tactic, and SEO companies in Bay Area excel at earning backlinks from reputable websites. For instance, a local fashion boutique could benefit from being featured in a well-known fashion blog or online magazine. These backlinks improve your website’s authority and help it rank higher in search engine results.
Ongoing Monitoring and Reporting
Tracking SEO progress is vital to understanding the effectiveness of your strategy. For example, a real estate agency would benefit from regular reports showing increases in website traffic and leads generated from search engines. SEO companies in Bay Area provide regular reports and data insights, showing how your SEO efforts are paying off. They monitor vital metrics like website traffic, keyword rankings, and conversion rates, and adjust strategies to keep your business moving forward. This ongoing attention ensures that your SEO campaigns remain effective.

Implementing Eco-Friendly Cleaning Practices
Transitioning to eco-friendly cleaning involves adopting products and techniques that are not only effective but also safe for the environment and human health. This section will explore the key strategies for implementing these eco-friendly cleaning practices:
Choosing the Right Products
The first step in implementing eco-friendly cleaning practices is selecting the right products. Look for cleaning agents that are certified by recognized environmental standards, such as Green Seal or EcoLogo, which ensure the products meet strict environmental and health criteria. Opt for products labeled as biodegradable, non-toxic, and made from renewable resources. These products should also be free from harmful chemicals like phthalates, phosphates, and chlorine. By choosing the right products, businesses can ensure they are not contributing to environmental degradation or health hazards.
Sustainable Cleaning Techniques
Sustainability needs to be at the core of your cleaning game plan if you want to keep your environmental impact in check. Stock up on microfiber mops and cloths – these reusable champions can tackle grime without harsh chemicals. Cut back on water and energy waste by embracing cold-water cleaning and investing in energy-efficient equipment. And do not forget about proper waste disposal; make sure those empty cleaner bottles and other trash find their way to the right recycling or disposal channels to avoid polluting our surroundings.
Employee Training and Engagement
For eco-friendly cleaning practices to be effective, employees need to be well-informed and engaged. Provide comprehensive training on the use of eco-friendly products and sustainable cleaning methods. Educate staff about the environmental and health benefits of these practices, and how their actions contribute to the company’s sustainability goals. Encourage sustainable behaviors by setting up incentive programs and recognizing employees who consistently adhere to eco-friendly practices. Engaged and knowledgeable employees are more likely to support and effectively implement these initiatives.
Partnering with Eco-Friendly Services
When outsourcing cleaning services, it’s important to partner with companies that share your commitment to sustainability. Select cleaning companies that use eco-friendly products and practices. Evaluate their sustainability credentials and ask for documentation of their environmental policies. Working with eco-friendly service providers ensures that your business maintains its sustainability standards even when tasks are outsourced. Additionally, it can be beneficial to collaborate with these providers to continually improve and innovate your cleaning practices.

Debunking Myths about Eco-Friendly Cleaning
Despite the growing popularity of eco-friendly cleaning, several myths persist that can deter businesses from making the switch. It’s important to address and debunk these misconceptions to fully understand the benefits and feasibility of eco-friendly cleaning practices.
Myth 1: Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products Are Not as Effective
One common myth is that eco-friendly cleaning products are less effective than traditional chemical cleaners. Many eco-friendly products are specifically formulated to match or even exceed the performance of conventional cleaners. They can effectively remove dirt, grime, and germs without the harmful side effects of toxic chemicals. Advances in green chemistry have led to the development of highly effective, non-toxic cleaning solutions that can tackle tough stains and bacteria just as well as, if not better than, traditional products.
Myth 2: Eco-Friendly Cleaning Is Too Expensive
Another prevalent myth is that eco-friendly cleaning is prohibitively expensive. You might balk at the initial price tag on certain eco-friendly cleaners, but don’t let that deter you. These sustainable solutions frequently prove their worth by being more economical over time. Many eco-friendly cleaning products are concentrated and require less quantity per use, making them cost-effective over time. Additionally, businesses can save money through reduced health-related costs, lower water and energy bills, and potential tax incentives for adopting sustainable practices. The long-term savings and benefits far outweigh the initial investment.
Myth 3: Eco-Friendly Cleaning Is Only for Small Businesses
Some believe that eco-friendly cleaning is only practical for small businesses and not scalable for larger organizations. This is far from the truth. Many large corporations have successfully implemented eco-friendly cleaning practices across their operations. By leveraging their resources, larger businesses can make a significant impact on sustainability and often have greater access to bulk purchasing and advanced green technologies. Scaling eco-friendly practices is not only feasible but can also lead to substantial environmental and financial benefits for large companies.
Myth 4: Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products Are Hard to Find
A misconception exists that eco-friendly cleaning products are difficult to find or limited in variety. In today’s market, there is a wide range of eco-friendly cleaning products readily available from various suppliers. Major retailers and specialized green product companies offer a diverse selection of eco-friendly options to suit different cleaning needs. With growing demand, the availability and variety of these products continue to expand, making it easier than ever for businesses to source eco-friendly cleaning supplies.
Myth 5: Eco-Friendly Cleaning Requires More Effort
Another myth is that eco-friendly cleaning requires more time and effort compared to traditional methods. In fact, many eco-friendly products are designed to be easy to use and just as convenient as conventional cleaners. Sustainable cleaning techniques, such as using microfiber cloths and energy-efficient equipment, can streamline the cleaning process. Additionally, proper employee training can ensure that eco-friendly practices are integrated smoothly and efficiently into daily routines without extra effort.
Conclusion
Adopting eco-friendly cleaning practices is a win-win for your business, your employees, and the planet. By making the switch to sustainable solutions, you can create a healthier work environment, project a positive brand image, and contribute to a greener future. Remember, every small step counts. So, take the first step today and embark on a journey towards a cleaner, more sustainable future for your business.

It eliminates the need for constant replacements, reducing the environmental impact associated with excessive consumption. In addition, HAVERHILL’s unique alteration service allows you to easily add birthstones to your existing pieces, eliminating the need to replace your pieces entirely as your story inevitably evolves or your family grows.
HAVERHILL’s commitment to personalization further elevates its pieces to sustainable luxury. Birthstone necklaces, initial pendants, and meaningful symbols allow customers to imbue their jewelry with personal meaning. Happy Eco News Harlem’s Proposed Green Roof Bus Shelters
Reading Time: 3 minutes
Green roof bus shelters: A cool idea takes root in East Harlem, NYC.
East Harlem, a vibrant New York City neighborhood, faces a scorching reality – stifling summer heat. Dense concrete development traps solar energy, creating an urban heat island effect that pushes temperatures far beyond those in greener areas. A recent study revealed a grim fact: East Harlem experiences surface temperatures over 30 degrees hotter than wealthier counterparts like the Upper West Side. This extreme heat disproportionately affects ****** and Latinx communities, who make up 80% of East Harlem’s population but account for a staggering 50% of heat-related deaths in all of New York City.
However, the East Harlem Climate and Community Master Plan, fueled by federal and state climate funding, proposes a comprehensive strategy to combat environmental disparities. Among its innovative solutions is a seemingly simple yet impactful idea – green roofs on bus shelters along East Harlem’s major thoroughfare, 125th Street.
Green roofs are vegetated rooftops that offer many benefits. Beyond providing shade for weary pedestrians and transit riders, they act as natural sponges, absorbing rainwater and mitigating the risk of floods, a recurrent problem in East Harlem due to its low-lying geography. However, perhaps the most significant benefit in this context is their ability to combat heat. The vegetation on a green roof cools the surrounding air through evapotranspiration, the process by which plants release water vapor. This translates to a more comfortable experience for commuters and residents alike. Additionally, green roofs filter air pollutants and absorb carbon dioxide, creating a cleaner and healthier environment.
The concept of green roof bus shelters is gaining traction worldwide as cities seek innovative ways to combat urban heat islands, improve air quality, and foster biodiversity. Cities like Rotterdam in the Netherlands and Copenhagen in Denmark are leading the charge, boasting extensive green rooftops on buildings, public spaces, and even bus stops. These wild roofs not only beautify the cityscape but also absorb rainwater and create vital habitats for urban wildlife. New York City itself is no stranger to green roofs, with several public and private buildings incorporating these eco-friendly solutions into their designs. However, the East Harlem green roof bus shelters project takes this concept a step further by adapting it to the specific needs of the neighborhood.
Inspired by the success of large-scale green roof initiatives, the Harlem green roof bus shelters project aims to transform ordinary bus stops into miniature urban oases. By covering the roofs of bus shelters with carefully selected plants and soil substrates, these green havens offer a respite from the concrete jungle, reducing the urban heat island effect and improving air quality for commuters and pedestrians alike. The plants not only add a touch of natural beauty but also help to capture and slow rainwater, mitigating the burden on the city’s stormwater management systems.
Furthermore, the Harlem green roof bus shelters project seeks to foster a sense of community ownership and pride by involving local residents in the design, installation, and maintenance of these green roof bus shelters. Through educational workshops and hands-on participation, East Harlem residents can learn about the benefits of urban greening and contribute to the creation of a more sustainable and livable environment within their neighborhoods.

Celebrating Learn About Composting Day: Different ways to compost
May 29 is Learn About Composting Day, a day to educate yourself and others about the simple, effective way of reducing household waste. Composting is important for many reasons: it helps divert organic waste from landfills, it enriches and improves soil structure, water retention, and aeration, and it is a form of recycling of organic carbon.
Composting involves decomposing organic materials such as kitchen scraps, yard waste, and other biodegradable materials. Green materials such as kitchen scraps or fresh yard waste are rich in nitrogen. In contrast, brown materials such as dried leaves, straw or newspaper are rich in carbon.
Different types of waste will be preferred for optimal results depending on the various different ways to compost you choose. There are many different ways to compost, which we will explore in this article.
Different Ways to Compost:
Backyard/ Home Composting
Backyard/home composting usually involves a backyard pile or a small enclosed bin. These systems mostly handle food scraps (except meat, bones and dairy products) and yard trimmings. The organic materials should be layered and mixed to allow for aeration and facilitate decomposition.
After the initial decomposition phase, the compost will take time to mature or cure, which can be used to enrich soil in gardens, flower beds, and landscaping projects.
Vermicomposting
Vermicomposting or worm composting relies on earthworms and microorganisms to break down the organic materials. This can be done in an indoor or outdoor compost system. Using worms means you do not have to aerate or turn the compost pile manually, as they will do that for you. One pound of mature worms can eat up to half a pound of organic material per day.
Bokashi Composting
Bokashi composting is an excellent way to compost indoors and repurpose your kitchen scraps. Food waste and anaerobic bacteria are layered into a specially designed bucket with an airtight lid and a tap at the bottom. The waste will start to ferment and will eventually become a nutrient-dense material. This byproduct can be used directly on your soil or added to a traditional compost pile.
Windrow Composting
Windrow composting is an excellent method for large-scale composting. It is generally used in the farming sector. Organic waste is made into rows of long piles called windrows. These piles are aerated by turning the piles manually or with machines. When it is done in an enclosed space, it provides oxygen using cooling machines.
Municipal Composting
Many cities have local government programs where yard trimmings or food scraps are collected from homes and businesses. These programs may be managed, funded, and operated at the level of a town, city, county, solid waste district, or a combination. They may involve contracts with private compost haulers or producers.
The compost can be distributed to local residents or landscapers and used in community gardens or parks. In some cases, composting facilities may also capture biogas (methane) produced during the decomposition process for energy generation.
There are many ways to celebrate Learn About Composting Day, which you can implement not just today but any day. Some of these ways include:
Encouraging your family, friends, and neighbors to start composting.
Checking out local workshops or events that promote composting.
Joining a local garden or community garden’s composting activities.
Organizing a clean-up event in your neighborhood to collect organic waste for composting.
Take a trip to a local farm that uses composting as part of its sustainable farming practices.
Challenge yourself to try new methods such as hot composting, vermicomposting, or bokashi composting.
Write to your local officials to develop a composting program in your area.
There are many different ways to compost. Regardless of which you choose, repurposing your food and kitchen scraps is a great way to give back to the environment and the planet, so start composting today!

9 Lesser-Known Pollutants and How to Avoid Them in Our Everyday Lives
You know the dangers of carbon monoxide, microplastics and greenhouse gasses. You may also know volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) because of how much media attention they’ve received recently.
Laws try to phase out dangerous substances from entering the air, soil and water. Some are tangible, like plastic bags, while others are invisible and hard to monitor, like methane. Sometimes, a few are sneaky enough to fly under the radar. These lesser-known pollutants are still present and dangerous, so what can you do to stay safe?
1. ****** Carbon
****** carbon is the ****** remnants from diesel engines in land and sea vehicles. Combustion also creates it. Trucks and ships are powerful pushers of this toxic pollutant worldwide. It’s the second-most potential contributor to rising temperatures, only beaten by carbon dioxide. In a century, one ton of ****** carbon equals 900 tons of carbon dioxide in warming potential. If this is so concentrated, why isn’t anyone talking about it?
It is a lesser-known pollutant for several reasons. Societies worked tirelessly to normalize fossil fuel-based transportation. This is to humanity’s detriment because now everyone is numb to its polluting impact. Advocating for electrified transportation is the best way to avoid them long term. You can also avoid it by driving less and stop burning waste
2. Visual Pollution
Are you bothered by littered streets covered in trash or a billboard interrupting a gorgeous tree line? These are instances of visual pollution. It may not seem as severe as something like ****** carbon, but it does take a toll on societies. These pollutants do signify other environmental concerns, such as lax littering laws or poor urban management.
It makes people feel disconnected from their homes and nature because unwanted intrusions disrupt peace. People feel mixtures of emotions when bombarded with visual pollution, including:
Anger
Frustration
Sadness
Anxiety
Overwhelm
Light pollution is a form of visual pollution often found in metropolitan areas, and these are harmful for wildlife patterns and human sleeping patterns. Avoid visual pollution by cleaning up your town, talking to city councils to restore areas, and adjusting the orientation of lights to reduce spread. Some places get creative with events like Earth Hour in 2018. Around 17,900 landmarks turned off lights for one hour, representing the impact periodic blackouts can have on energy savings and animal movement.
3. Harmful Algal Blooms
Algae could be a productive facet of an aquatic habitat, but there can be too much of a good thing. HABs pollute the water and air when they produce too much. They may sit in a thick layer on the tops of water bodies, preventing sunlight and nutrients from entering the ecosystem.
HABs harm cities in addition to waterways. Green waste like leaves and lawn clippings may grow algae, releasing toxins. If green waste appears on microorganisms and flushes into waterways, it makes matters more complicated. The high phosphorus levels lead to more HABs.
Homeowners should keep an eye on their area, hiring professionals to clean house sidings and sidewalks if they notice anything. Encouraging the work of other experts like street cleaners is also critical. They prevent runoff from getting into water by disposing of it safely in the city before it has the chance to affect other environments.
4. Propylene Glycol (PG)
What do flavored coffee and antifreeze have in common? They both contain the chemical, PG. You also find this petroleum-based liquid in pharmaceuticals, food coloring and many food products. Some places source it from plants, like soybeans, but this isn’t always true. The fossil fuel version harms the planet and humans, which is why it’s banned in some places.
Steer clear of it by getting used to reading ingredient lists. You may also talk to health professionals to find safe alternatives if you’re worried it’s present in medications.
5. Coal Ash
Coal ash is the leftovers of burning coal. It contains a host of dangerous heavy metals and poisonous substances, including lead and mercury. Coal plants don’t have efficient or ethical ways of dealing with these remnants. It gets trapped in water and seeps into environments, and states like Tennessee and North Carolina have felt it the worst.
Replacing coal-based machinery with renewable alternatives is the best way to stand against coal ash pollution.
6. Chromium
Metalworking factories produce tons of chromium and lead, though more focus often goes to the latter. It gets into the water, which is how it makes its way into you. Water treatment facilities do everything they can to get it out, but installing filters in your home isn’t a bad idea.
It also enters the air from manufacturing and processing plants, so installing air monitors is also ideal for the home. Smart monitors measure indoor air quality and pollutant levels of more than just chromium, including:
VOCs
Ozone
Radon
Particulate matter
Carbon monoxide
Nitrogen dioxide
Metals
7. Thermal Pollution
Everything from power plants to car batteries causes thermal pollution. This describes the residual heat radiating from power plants, devices and more. It also comes from processes like deforestation and urban sprawl. It may seem inconsequential, but increasing urbanization and digitization means the world produces more heat than ever.
Thermal pollution may not be as inherently toxic as others on this list, but it is deceptive in contributing to global warming. It could also meld with other forms of air pollution, like heavy metals or particulate matter.
Escaping thermal pollution requires finesse. If you work somewhere emitting it in significant quantities, consider pitching a cooling tower or lake to regulate nearby temperatures. This reduces exposure to yourself and nearby nature.
8. Sound Pollution
Like visual pollution, sound pollution is one many people have dismissed. Cities are loud with cars and static. Events are constantly happening, as concerts, parades and fundraisers name only a few gatherings. Pair this with sirens, construction, barking dogs and conversations, and the outdoors is a noisy place to be.
Disturbances in otherwise tranquil environments disrupt animal and human behaviors. Sound pollution upsets sleep, causes emotional strain and damages hearing. Avoid sound pollution by installing soundproofing around your home and office. Ear plugs are also helpful in some circumstances. You can also practice awareness of the sound pollution you create.
9. Microfibers
Many know the horrors of microplastic beads found in clothes and cosmetics. Microfibers are just as plentiful and in the same products, and they are also plastic-based. Synthetics like polyester carry tons of them, and they are extremely resilient. Six kilograms of clothes could release up to 700,000 microfibers in one wash. These materials don’t like to degrade, and they withstand the elements like a pro.
You can stop purchasing clothes containing plastic-laden materials. Choose organic, natural sources instead. There are also products you can place in your machine to catch as many microfibers as possible, though they aren’t 100% effective.
Pervasive Pollutants
It’s a challenge to know where every pollutant is hiding. It’s even more difficult to find consistent, evidence-based information on their impacts. It will take time, advocacy, cooperation and legislation to overcome these toxic influences. As substitutions arise, new pollutants may come out of the woodwork. This is expected, but humanity will keep refining until unnecessary pollutants leave everyday life.

This representative acts on behalf of the environment, guided by a committee of environmental experts who advise on major decisions. This innovative approach ensures that environmental well-being is a top priority when making business choices.
See also: Patagonia’s Yvon Chouinard – True Climate Hero.
The “Nature” board member concept has undoubtedly generated significant media attention for ****** in Nature. Whether it’s a clever marketing ploy or a genuine attempt to prioritize sustainability in corporate decision-making ******** a topic of debate. Critics argue that it’s a flashy marketing gimmick with little real impact, as a human still makes the final call.
However, proponents point out that ****** in Nature has gone beyond mere marketing. Their B Corp certification, commitment to natural ingredients, and focus on sustainable practices demonstrate a genuine effort to minimize environmental impact. Additionally, the transparency surrounding the committee of environmental experts advising the “Nature” board member suggests a real ******* to integrate environmental concerns into decision-making.
****** in Nature also offers advice for other companies that may be considering a similar move. The corporate website features a page dedicated to helping others, and offers people to download an information package with no email or strings attached. This in itself leads me to live that their intentions are pure.
The “Nature” board member strategy is undeniably good marketing, but it’s more than just a gimmick. Their business model and certifications show ****** in Nature’s commitment to ethical and sustainable practices. While unconventional, the “Nature” seat forces environmental considerations into boardroom discussions.
But is it profitable? A company should be able to make money in order to be a company. ****** in Nature is private and is not required to disclose detailed financial information like market share. However, we can look at some indicators that suggest its market share might be growing. Its revenue has been increasing in recent years, last reported to be £14.8 million in June 2022. This could indicate it’s capturing a larger share of the market.
Industry trends show the natural and vegan beauty market is experiencing significant growth. If ****** in Nature is capitalizing on this trend, its market share could and should expand.
Other indicators, like the completion of a successful crowdfunding campaign in 2023, suggest investor confidence and potentially growing demand for their products in line with consumer demand for this type of product.
The true test ***** in the long run. Will ****** in Nature translate this innovative approach into long-term sustainable practices and financial stability? Can they navigate rising costs and economic uncertainty while upholding their environmental commitments? The answer will determine whether “Nature” on their board table is a game-changer or simply a footnote in their story. Only time will tell if this innovative approach can steer ****** in Nature towards a future that’s good for both their bottom line and the planet.

Happy Eco News What is the Voluntary Carbon Market?
Reading Time: 4 minutes
What is the voluntary carbon market, and can it help reduce climate heating?
Climate change is no longer a distant threat; it’s an urgent reality demanding immediate action. As the world grapples with the consequences of rising greenhouse gas emissions, innovative solutions are emerging to combat this global challenge. One such solution gaining prominence is the Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM), a platform where companies, organizations, and individuals can offset their carbon footprints. But can this market truly deliver on its promise of a cleaner planet?
Carbon Offsets: The Core of the Voluntary Carbon Market
At the heart of the Voluntary Carbon Market ***** the concept of carbon offsets. Imagine a scenario where a company’s operations generate significant carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. The VCM offers them a means to compensate for this environmental impact by purchasing “carbon credits.” These credits symbolize one metric ton of CO2 (or the equivalent amount of another greenhouse gas) that has either been prevented from entering the atmosphere or removed from it altogether.
A key strategy for carbon offsetting projects focuses on emission avoidance. This involves investing in initiatives that prevent greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere. Examples include supporting the development of renewable energy sources like solar or wind farms, which displace electricity generation from polluting fossil fuel plants. By financing these preventative measures, carbon offsetting goes beyond simply removing existing emissions, actively contributing to a cleaner energy future.
Complementing emission avoidance strategies, another key approach in carbon offsetting projects centers on removing existing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This involves financing activities that act as carbon sinks. Examples include large-scale tree planting initiatives, where growing trees absorb and store CO2 through photosynthesis. Additionally, innovative technological advancements in carbon capture and storage (CCS) are emerging. CCS projects capture CO2 emissions from industrial sources like power plants and then securely store them underground, preventing them from reaching the atmosphere. By funding these removal projects, carbon offsetting contributes to actively reducing the overall concentration of greenhouse gases in the environment..
By purchasing carbon credits, companies essentially “offset” their emissions by supporting initiatives with a positive climate impact. This allows them to demonstrate progress towards sustainability goals while continuing efforts to reduce their emissions footprint.

Why is the Voluntary Carbon Market Important?
The Voluntary Carbon Market holds significant potential in the ****** against climate change for several reasons. While regulatory measures like carbon pricing schemes are gaining momentum, they are not universally implemented. The VCM provides an immediate avenue for climate action, even without stringent regulations.
The purchase of carbon credits generates crucial funding for projects that reduce or remove greenhouse gases. This financial support can bolster initiatives such as renewable energy development, forest conservation efforts, or advancements in carbon capture technologies. Many companies have set ambitious targets to achieve net-zero emissions. The Voluntary Carbon Market enables them to offset unavoidable emissions while striving to become more sustainable.
Concerned consumers can leverage the Voluntary Carbon Market to offset their emissions from specific travel or their entire lives. This empowers individuals to take a more active role in reducing their environmental footprint by directly financing projects that reduce or remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. Find reputable providers offering verified carbon credits to ensure your contribution supports impactful sustainability initiatives. Remember, offsetting is one piece of the puzzle – prioritizing energy efficiency and reducing consumption remain crucial for a lower carbon footprint.
Despite its benefits, the VCM faces several challenges:
Ensuring carbon credits represent actual, measurable emission reductions is paramount. Robust verification systems and transparent reporting are essential to prevent instances of “greenwashing.” This is why carbon credits for projects that produce biochar and calcium carbonate are highly regarded. Compared with forestry, which may be vulnerable to destruction in the future, these are considered more permanent forms of carbon sequestration.
Robust accounting mechanisms are essential to ensure the integrity of the Voluntary Carbon Market and prevent double counting. This means avoiding situations where a single emission reduction is claimed by both the project developer who implemented the initiative (e.g., planting trees) and the individual or entity that purchases the resulting carbon credit. Clear rules and tracking systems are needed to guarantee that each carbon credit represents a unique and verified reduction in greenhouse gases.
Shoring up transparency throughout the Voluntary Carbon Market is crucial. This means making information readily available about project selection criteria, methodologies used for calculating emissions reductions, and independent verification processes. Increased transparency allows for better monitoring of projects and helps prevent greenwashing – where projects inflate their environmental benefits. A clear view of the VCM fosters trust and ensures that carbon credits represent legitimate contributions to emissions reduction efforts.
To unlock the full potential of the Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM), streamlining procedures and potentially reducing costs associated with carbon credit generation and verification is crucial. This could involve simplifying methodologies or leveraging technological solutions to make the process more efficient. By making participation less complex and potentially more affordable, the VCM can become more accessible to a wider range of project developers and individuals looking to offset their emissions, ultimately boosting the market’s impact in tackling climate change.
The Voluntary Carbon Market has the potential to drive investment in climate solutions and expedite the transition to a low-carbon future. However, its success hinges on addressing existing challenges and ensuring transparent and accountable operation. As the VCM evolves, it can serve as a powerful tool in empowering individuals, organizations, and businesses to mitigate their carbon footprint and contribute to a healthier planet for future generations.

Happy Eco News Engineered Wetlands Filter Road Salt
Reading Time: 3 minutes
Moncton’s engineered and human-constructed wetlands filter road salt, protecting nearby river habitat.
Road salt pollution is an environmental issue that can negatively impact freshwater ecosystems worldwide. Municipalities heavily rely on salt during winter to de-ice roads and ensure safe travel. However, as snow and ice melt, excess salt runoff enters streams, rivers, and lakes, leading to elevated salt concentrations that can harm aquatic life and degrade water quality.
Elevated salt levels can disrupt the balance of aquatic ecosystems, impair the health of fish, invertebrates, and plant life, and impact drinking water supplies and agricultural lands. It also doesn’t take a lot of salt to make a freshwater system less desirable for fish that can’t survive without it.
Ducks Unlimited, a nonprofit organization dedicated to wetlands conservation, is working with the city of Moncton in New Brunswick, Canada, to reduce the amount of salt in its waterways by leveraging nature.
See also: Biden Administration Drafts New Rules to Protect Streams and Wetlands.
The need to develop an environmental alternative stemmed after aerial video footage of Moncton’s snow dump following more than 14 feet of snow went viral. This huge snow dump site, packed with road salt and other hazardous chemicals, had citizens wondering what would happen to the toxins once the snow melted. Local officials were also concerned that runoff from snow being trucked to the Berry Mills dumpsite from different parts of the city would flow into an adjacent brook.
Because wetlands filter road salt, the city of Monton and Ducks Unlimited have been working on designing a skinny wetland that would mimic a natural one. The constructed wetland is a three-acre wetland between the Berry Mills snow dump and a local watercourse, which holds and filters the snowmelt. The wetland includes salt-resistant vegetation that can absorb most of the contaminants before the water flows into Jonathan Creek.
The runoff from the snow dump (which is filled with sand, salt, and other pollutants) is forced to flow into this new wetland feature where wetlands filter road salt. It will then exit into a more filtered state into the brook. Since the creation of this new wetland, the city has seen an increase of over 20 percent in water quality. They have also found that in addition to the decrease in road salt, there has also been a decrease in hydrocarbons, metals, and other sediments in the runoff.
This is not the first time that the city of Moncton and Ducks Unlimited have teamed up to design constructed wetlands. In 2013, after the city experienced intense and frequent storms and heavy precipitation, it needed a plan to store the excess water.
They built wetlands, which, unlike traditional stormwater retention ponds, store and filter huge amounts of water. These wetlands also capture carbon and restore local biodiversity. The Moncton Naturalized Stormwater Management Guidelines were created to formulate strategies and specifications for stormwater management practices and designs in the City of Moncton.
These guidelines establish criteria for the construction of retention ponds and offer municipal directives for implementing alternative naturalized strategies. Among these approaches is the creation of rain gardens, which feature plant species capable of thriving in conditions of excessive moisture and nutrient levels. The guidelines have become so popular that other cities and provinces use them in their plans.
With so many cities and municipalities depending on road salt during the winter months, it is concerning to think about what happens to these pollutants when the snow melts and how many ecosystems are at risk because of it. Moncton, New Brunswick’s wetland solutions are an innovative way to help reduce the impacts of salt and maintain healthy environments. Areas around the world that use salt have a lot to learn from this small ********* town.

Happy Eco News Non-Toxic Bedding Choices for a Safer Night of Sleep
Reading Time: 4 minutes
Non-Toxic Bedding Choices for a Safer Night of Sleep
Let’s face it, sleep is pretty ***** important. It’s when our bodies recharge, our brains consolidate memories, and our immune systems ramp up for battle against those pesky allergens. But what if your sleep sanctuary is harboring hidden nasties that are disrupting your slumber and making you sniffle?
Conventional mattresses and bedding can be stuffed with synthetic materials and treated with chemicals that, well, let’s just say they weren’t designed with restful nights in mind. These can off-gas volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that irritate your skin and lungs, and some flame retardant chemicals have even been linked to potential health concerns. Not exactly the recipe for sweet dreams!
But ***** not, weary sleeper! There’s a better way to slumber. Non-toxic bedding is all about creating a safe and healthy sleep environment using natural materials and eco-conscious practices. So ditch the night sweats and itchy eyes, and say hello to a night of rest that’s as good for you as it is for the planet.
Why Choose Non-Toxic Bedding?
Think of your bed as a giant hug machine. Ideally, it should be soft, supportive, and make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Unfortunately, conventional bedding materials can sometimes feel more like a scratchy old sweater. Synthetic fabrics can trap heat, leading to night sweats, and chemical finishes can irritate your skin, especially if you have allergies.
Non-toxic bedding is made from natural fibers like organic cotton, linen, wool, and silk. These breathe easy, wick away moisture, and can help regulate temperature, keeping you cool in the summer and cozy in the winter. Plus, they’re often gentler on sensitive skin, so you can wake up feeling refreshed and ready to tackle the day (or hit the snooze button a few more times, no judgment here).
Choosing Non-Toxic Bedding Materials
When it comes to non-toxic bedding, there’s a whole world of natural fibers to explore! Here are a few of our favorites:
Organic Cotton: This is a classic choice for a reason. Soft, breathable, and readily available, organic cotton is a gentle giant when it comes to comfort. Plus, since organic cotton is grown without harmful pesticides and fertilizers, you can rest easy knowing you’re not breathing in any unwanted chemicals.
Linen: Linen sheets get softer with every wash, and they’re naturally temperature regulating, making them perfect for year-round comfort. They also have a slightly wrinkled look that some people find charmingly rustic (and others might call messy, but hey, to each their own). Plus, they’re super durable, so you won’t have to replace them any time soon (unless maybe your **** develops a strange sheet-eating habit, but that’s a whole other story).
Wool: Wool might seem like a surprising choice, but hear us out. Naturally flame-resistant, wool is also great at wicking away moisture and regulating temperature. So long as you don’t have any sheep-related allergies, wool bedding can be a luxurious and cozy option, especially during chilly winter nights.
Silk: If you’re looking for a touch of luxury, then silk is your jam. Naturally hypoallergenic and temperature-regulating, silk sheets feel like sleeping on a cloud (and probably cost about the same as one too, but hey, treat yourself!). Just be warned, silk can be delicate, so you might have to be a little more gentle with it than your average sheet.
Tencel (Lyocell): Made from sustainably sourced eucalyptus pulp, Tencel is a super soft and breathable fabric that’s kind to your skin and the environment. Tencel sheets are known for their drapey look and smooth feel, making them a great choice for those who love the feel of silk but can’t quite stomach the price tag.
Beyond the Mattress and Sheets
Your quest for non-toxic sleep doesn’t stop at the sheets! Consider swapping out your synthetic pillows for ones filled with organic cotton, kapok (a plant-based fiber that feels like down), or buckwheat hulls (great for side sleepers and those who tend to overheat).
For comforters and duvets, ditch the polyester fill and opt for natural options like organic cotton or wool. You can even find mattress toppers made from organic cotton, wool, or natural latex, which can add a plush layer of comfort to your existing mattress.
Don’t Forget the Extras
The quest for a healthy sleep environment goes beyond just your bedding. Here are a few other things to consider:
Mattress Pad: A breathable and washable mattress pad can help protect your mattress from dust mites, allergens, and spills
Pillows: While we mentioned pillow options earlier, it’s worth noting that some people find their allergies are triggered by feather or down pillows. Look for nontoxic pillows made from the same natural fibers as your bedding, or consider buckwheat hulls for a naturally hypoallergenic option.
Mattress Protectors: Not all mattress protectors are created equal. Avoid vinyl or PVC protectors, which can trap heat and emit harmful VOCs. Instead, opt for a breathable protector made from organic cotton or Tencel.
Bedroom Environment: The temperature and air quality in your bedroom can also impact your sleep. Aim for a cool, dark, and clutter-free sleep environment. Invest in ********* curtains to block out light, and consider using an air purifier to remove dust mites, **** dander, and other allergens from the air.
Conclusion: Sweet Dreams Are Made of This
So there you have it! By choosing non-toxic bedding and creating a healthy sleep environment, you can create a sleep sanctuary that’s good for you and the planet. Look for certifications like GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) and Oeko-Tex Standard 100 to ensure you’re getting high-quality, non-toxic bedding. With a little research, you can find reputable brands that offer comfortable and eco-conscious sleep products without breaking the bank. Now go forth and conquer the world… after a good night’s sleep, of course. Remember, a well-rested you is a more productive, creative, and happy you! And hey, maybe you’ll even wake up with fewer sniffles (but no promises on curing your partner’s snoring).

Happy Eco News Celebrating World Turtle Day: The Olive Ridley Turtle
Reading Time: 3 minutes
Celebrating World Turtle Day: The Olive Ridley Turtle
May 23 is World Turtle Day, a day to raise awareness about the importance of protecting turtles and their disappearing habitats worldwide. Turtles and tortoises are some of the oldest and most primitive creatures on Earth, dating back to the time when dinosaurs roamed the planet.
Turtles play important roles in our ecosystems because they help maintain ecological balance by controlling populations of certain species. They contribute to habitat engineering, which creates microhabitats for other species. Turtles play a role in nutrient cycling by consuming plants and animals and then excreting waste.
Many turtle species face various threats, including habitat loss and degradation, pollution in water bodies, climate change, overharvesting and ******** trade, bycatch, and *********. These threats make conservation efforts crucial to protecting turtle populations.
One species of turtle that is being protected by national laws, international treaties, and agreements is the Olive Ridley turtle.
The Olive Ridley turtle is considered to be the most abundant sea turtle in the world and is found in the coastal waters of at least 80 countries. They are found in tropical regions of the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans. In the Pacific, the Olive Ridley turtle prefers beaches of Mexico south to Columbia, and in the Indian Ocean, they are found in Earth India and Sri Lanka. Upward of 521,000 nests are ***** every year on Indian beaches alone.
The Olive Ridley turtle gets its name from the ****** of its heart-shaped shell. The shell starts out grey but becomes olive green once the turtles become adults. Western Atlantic olive ridleys are usually darker than Eastern Pacific olive ridleys.
The Olive Ridley turtle feels on both plants and animals and can be found foraging for invertebrates to depths of about 150 meters. Their dietary habits play a role in maintaining the health of marine ecosystems by controlling the populations of these organisms. ****** turtles are relatively small, averaging 2 to 2.5 feet in length and 80 to 110 pounds in weight. They are the smallest of all sea turtles.
The number of Olive Ridley turtles has dramatically reduced due to the overexploitation of turtle meat and eggs. They are also bycatch in fishing gear (primarily in shrimp trawl nets and nearshore gill nets). Coastal development and rising seas from climate change are leading to the loss of nesting beach habitat for olive ridley turtles. Additionally, increasing pollution of nearshore and offshore marine habitats threatens all sea turtles and degrades their habitats.
The conservation of Olive Ridley turtles has positively impacted the protection of this species. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Marine Fisheries Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service regularly monitor Olive Ridley turtle populations. The modification of fishing gear (such as the use of turtle exclusion devices), the changes to fishing practices, and the closures of certain areas to fishing during nesting and hatching seasons have also helped maintain population numbers.
The Olive Ridley turtle is not the only species of turtle that requires protection and conservation. Many other species need our help, not just on World Turtle Day but every day. Here are some ways you can celebrate the day:
Donate to turtle conservation centers.
Volunteer to help out at a turtle rescue center.
Help clean up beaches and local parks by collecting plastic and water bottles.
Find out what kind of turtle or tortoise is native to your region.
Learn more about turtles and tortoises and how to protect them and their habitat.
By doing our part, we can help protect turtle species and marine environments around the world.

Happy Eco News BC Offshore Oil Permits End
Reading Time: 3 minutes
BC offshore oil is officially over and done as oil giant Chevron surrenders its last permits.
Environmental groups are celebrating a significant victory against BC offshore oil exploration after decades of advocacy, as Chevron Canada relinquished the last remaining oil and gas exploration permits off British Columbia’s coast. This move marks a turning point for the pristine Pacific waters and ecosystems they hold.
For years, the existence of BC offshore oil permits cast a shadow over environmental protection efforts. Originally issued in the late 1960s and early 1970s, they remained valid despite a federal moratorium on offshore oil and gas activity implemented in 1972. These grandfathered permits posed a constant threat to the delicate BC offshore marine environment, creating uncertainty for conservation plans.
The news of Chevron’s surrender of its last BC offshore oil permits was met with applause from environmental groups. “It’s great to hear,” said Jay Ritchlin, Western Director General of the David Suzuki Foundation. “I’ve been working on this coast for over 20 years and all that time, these permits have been a constant threat to one of the most amazing marine ecosystems on the planet.” With their removal, the environmental risks associated with potential oil spills and drilling disruptions are finally eliminated.
The ****** against BC offshore oil permits wasn’t without its challenges. Ecojustice Canada, on behalf of the David Suzuki Foundation and World Wildlife Fund, filed a legal challenge in 2022 aiming to extinguish the permits within protected marine areas. The lawsuit argued that the indefinite extensions of these permits were unlawful. However, the legal challenge was discontinued last year as Chevron voluntarily decided to surrender its BC offshore oil licenses.
The federal government also played a key role in this success story. Minister of Natural Resources Jonathan Wilkinson emphasized the government’s clear stance against offshore oil and gas development. “We’ve made it pretty clear that we’re not interested in seeing oil and gas developments off our coast,” Wilkinson stated. He further acknowledged the crucial role of First Nations who consistently opposed potential exploration.

Looking towards the future, Ritchlin expressed hope that this victory signifies a broader shift away from fossil fuels. “I think the writing hopefully is clearly on the wall … these are losing bets if we continue to extract and produce, ship and ***** fossil fuels,” he said. The surrender of these permits also aligns with the federal government’s commitment to conserve 25% of Canada’s land and water by 2025, a crucial step towards environmental sustainability.
This development holds significant promise for the future of B.C.’s coast. The removal of the last of the BC offshore oil permits paves the way for the establishment of new marine protected areas, particularly in the ecologically rich Great Bear Sea region. These protected zones are championed by coastal First Nations, and their creation aligns with the $800 million federal funding initiative dedicated to Indigenous-led marine conservation projects.
“As a British Columbian, I’m very happy about the relinquishment of the permits,” Wilkinson said, highlighting the move’s reflection of public sentiment towards environmental protection. “It’s a big step forward,” he added. “It provides more certainty and clarity and is focused on helping us do what’s needed from an ocean protection and conservation perspective.”
While celebrating this victory, both environmental groups and the government acknowledge the ongoing need for collaboration. Establishing new marine protected areas requires careful planning and consultation with all stakeholders, especially Indigenous partners. “We need to ensure that we take time so that everybody’s comfortable, but we all feel the urgency,” Wilkinson remarked. “Not only because we have that 25 by 25 commitment, but also because it’s important we get them established in the context of trying to arrest the decline in biodiversity and help to ensure that our oceans are healthy going forward.”
The surrender of the final oil and gas permits marks a significant milestone for environmental protection efforts in British Columbia. It not only safeguards the sensitive marine ecosystems but also opens doors for collaborative initiatives led by First Nations. With continued commitment and cooperation, the future of B.C.’s breathtaking coastline appears brighter and healthier for generations to come.
