Idori: Empowering children and parents to face climate change in a positive way
Climate change is an issue that affects almost every aspect of our lives today, often triggering feelings of anxiety and helplessness. For parents, the challenge is twofold: They must deal with their own concerns about the future and face the daunting task of introducing these complex topics to their children. According to Pew Research Center, 76% of parents are concerned about their children dealing with anxiety. How do you explain something as vast and troubling as climate change to a 4-year-old without causing ***** or confusion? My name is Noah Sorin, and I decided to tackle this issue head-on, creating a solution that transforms environmental education into an engaging, inspiring, and empowering experience for young kids and their parents alike.
Growing up on an organic vegetable farm in northern Vermont gave me incredible outdoor experiences as a child (like hiking, camping, fishing, and snowboarding), which made me really value environmental conservation. After moving to Boston and realizing that most children don’t have these experiences nearly as accessible growing up, I made it my mission to make sustainability education accessible and enjoyable for young children everywhere. At this point, I got my first job as an early childhood educator at Boston Outdoor Preschool Network to start teaching kids about the importance of nature first-hand.
While I worked there, I recognized that while sustainability is crucial, teaching it effectively to young kids is often difficult, especially in urban areas. Many parents and teachers feel overwhelmed by the complexity of the issues or worry about causing unnecessary anxiety. As a result, many children are not introduced to these critical topics until much later in life, if at all. Yet, research from the National Institute of Health shows that habits formed in early childhood are likely to persist into adulthood, making it essential to introduce concepts like sustainability as early as possible.
In light of this, I founded Idori, a startup dedicated to helping parents and educators nurture sustainable behaviours in children ages 3 to 8. Idori offers an enchanting range of storybooks, interactive toys, hands-on activities, online resources, and afterschool programs that make learning about the environment a fun and engaging experience for young kids. This innovative approach educates and inspires children to care for the planet, ensuring that sustainability becomes second nature as they grow.

At the heart of Idori’s offerings are its whimsical characters like Benjy the Treehopper, Flo the Ocean-Dweller, and Geebo the Puffball, who each teach children about a different aspect of environmental stewardship. These characters are from the imaginary planet Idori, where they encounter challenges like deforestation, ocean pollution, and climate change, so they have to leave the planet Idori and find a new home.
After discovering a beautiful planet called Earth, they decide to teach the children of Earth to cherish and protect their planet so it doesn’t experience the same fate as the planet Idori. Through the Idorian’s adventures, children learn about the importance of protecting nature and are encouraged to adopt sustainable habits in their own lives in an empowering way. Idori utilizes storytelling to create products and services that deliver fun, memorable, and meaningful experiences for kids.
Idori’s products, including picture books, plush toys, and learning roadmaps, are more than just educational tools; they are designed to be interactive and fun, bridging the gap between learning and play. Each book in the series comes with a plush toy that children can cuddle and playfully interact with, enhancing the learning experience to be tactile and memorable.
The accompanying learning roadmaps help kids track their progress, providing a sense of achievement as they complete activities and lessons. Idori also offers an afterschool program, where high school and college students can volunteer to teach prek-3rd grade classrooms about the importance of sustainability using the Idori 10-week lesson plan! Kids can even celebrate their learning with a cute certificate of completion at the end of the program!
What sets Idori apart is the rigorous educational foundation behind its products and services. I worked closely with an advisory board of environmental educators to ensure the content was accurate and age-appropriate. This board includes experts like Sarah Besse, co-founder and executive director of the Boston Outdoor Preschool Network, who has extensive experience developing nature-based early childhood programs. Their input has been invaluable in creating a curriculum that resonates with children and educators, ensuring the lessons are engaging.
Parents who have tried Idori’s resources have been amazed by the positive changes in their children’s behaviours. One parent shared how their child came home after just one day of Idori’s afterschool program with a newfound determination to recycle and reduce their use of paper. Stories like these highlight the impact of Idori’s mission: to empower a generation of children to take meaningful action for the planet.
But my vision for Idori doesn’t stop there. I plan to launch a Kickstarter campaign to raise the funds needed to bring Idori’s products to a wider audience. The goal is to reach 10,000 children in the first year, expanding to one million within five years. The campaign will support the purchase of the first batch of inventory, the development of additional content, marketing campaigns, and the completion of an ed-tech platform that will make these resources even more accessible to schools and parents.

Products state where they have been manufactured on packaging, so if you set a goal to make sure that everything is sourced locally, you’ll be reducing demand for international import.
This isn’t always possible, but there is usually room for improvement.
Try to work out the ratio of your shopping that is currently imported. Say it’s 30%. Try to get that number down.
Supplier
If you shop at a large supermarket, have a look at their commitments and contributions to the environment.
If you are fortunate enough to have two large stores nearby, try to shop at the one that has better commitments.
Shopping locally also contributes to lower-impact businesses, and likely will make for less driving as larger businesses are typically on the edge of or just outside of a town due to their large size.

There is a lot that can be done to reduce your environmental impact when shopping, but simply being mindful of what you are buying is a great start.
Simply buying properly packaged products from a sustainable and ideally local provider will make a world of difference.

It’s summertime in Montreal, which means moving season and a concerning number of mattresses being left out on the curb. A mattress is one of those things that are very hard to give away. It’s not necessarily something you’d want to use secondhand due to hygiene concerns (including the accumulation of dust mites), the overall durability and lifespan of the mattress, and safety concerns (the contamination of bed bugs).
It is safe to say that these mattress owners hope their mattresses will be picked up with regular garbage collection and thrown into the landfill. But as of August 2023, the City of Montreal encourages citizens to bring their own mattresses to Ecocentric (or call a company to pick them up), where their components will be separated and recycled.
Recycling mattresses helps to divert bulky waste from landfills, where they would otherwise take up significant space and contribute to environmental issues. In Canada, Canadians dispose of over six million mattresses each year. Compared to other garbage in the landfill, mattress occupies 400% more space. It will also take a mattress 80 to 120 years before they are fully decomposed, and if they do decompose they will release toxic chemicals into the atmosphere.
Furthermore, because of their size, mattresses will wear down landfill equipment. Recycling your mattress will also conserve resources by reusing materials that would otherwise require new resources to produce.
The mattress recycling process will begin when it reaches a recycling centre where they are sorted according to type (i.e. foam or innerspring). The mattresses are then torn apart and disassembled to separate their various components. The components of a mattress which can be recycled or repurposed include:
Metal coils. Metal coils make up the springs in mattresses. They are usually made of steel. Steel can be melted down and used to create new products, including appliances and cars. The metal coils can also be used in the production of new mattresses.
Wood box springs: The wood can be chipped down and used to make mulch for landscaping or as fuel for energy generation.
Fabrics: Mattresses are made of multiple fabrics, including cotton and polyester. These fabrics are shredded into smaller pieces, which can be processed and used to create new items, including insulation or even new textiles.
Foam: Foam from the inside of mattresses can be shredded and reused as insulation, carpet padding, or animal bedding.
Other components like plastics or adhesives will be separated and sent for processing at local waste facilities.
Montreal is also hoping to expand these projects to include furniture recycling, as hard-to-give-away items like sofas or chairs also tend to find their way into the landfill. The City of Montreal is also looking at ways of setting up pickups for mattresses so that citizens do not have to bring them to eco centres themselves.
While recycling mattresses is beneficial, it’s important to note that not all recycling facilities accept mattresses due to their size and complexity. Checking with local recycling programs or waste management services can provide guidance on how to properly recycle a mattress in your area.
Although I am surprised that it took until last year for the City of Montreal to come up with a recycling plan for mattresses, it is an important step forward to reducing landfill waste and our environmental footprint. This past April, iNaturalist, an app that helps people identify plants and animals, launched their annual City Nature Challenge. The City Nature Challenge began in 2016 as a competition between Los Angeles and San Francisco. The goal was for participants to find and document any wildlife they found in the areas.
The competition has expanded to cities all around the world. From two cities and one country participating, the City Nature Challenge now has 690 cities and 51 countries that participate in the challenge.
Participants are tasked with finding wildlife, including plants, animals, or evidence of life in their city. They take a picture of what they find and share it through the iNaturalist platform. This massive data collection effort helps scientists gather valuable information on local species, their distribution, and ecological trends. The data can be used for research, conservation planning, and tracking biodiversity changes over time.
What is great about the City Nature Challenge is that anyone can participate. You can participate alone or with your family, as a class with students, or even help your city participate in the challenge.
Between April 26 and April 29, 2024, 2,436,844 observations were made across the globe. The app recorded over 65,000 species and close to 4,000 rare/endangered/threatened species. With over 83,000 participants, La Paz, Bolivia, earned the top spots for most observations (165,839), most species (5352) and most participants (3593). Following La Paz, for most observations, were Monterrey, Mexico and San Antonio, Texas.
Some notable findings from this year’s challenge include the Taiwan Thrush, which was found in Central Taiwan. It’s a rare bird endemic to Tawain, and only one was seen/recorded in this year’s Challenge. Another single observation was the Dingy Purplewing, which was found in South Florida and is a rare butterfly in this state. An Indri was found in Madagascar, one of the largest living lemurs and a critically endangered species. A Baird’s Tapir was captured on a camera trap in Peten, Guatemala. It is an endangered species due to the loss of its habitat. Many more interesting observations can be found on the City Nature Challenge website.
What’s important about the City Nature Challenge is that it highlights the biodiversity that exists in urban environments, which is often overlooked in favour of more natural settings. By engaging the public, the Challenge fosters a deeper connection between people and their local environment, helping them realize that nature is all around, even in cities.
