  1. *********** developers Playside and publishers Warner Bros Interactive have announced Game Of Thrones: War For Westeros, a real-time strategy game based on George R.R. Martin's perennially unfinished novel series A Song Of Ice And Fire, which somehow doesn't have a proper RTS adaptation already. No, Game Of Thrones: Winter Is Coming doesn't count as an RTS adaptation, and besides, that one's kind of naff. As Cersei Lannister once put it to Ned Stark, "When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die or you end up with a Mixed user review consensus on Steam". Read more View the full article

  3. Are you ready for game announcements? How about some game trailers? How about a bunch of ads and some random Hollywood cameos? Summer Game Fest 2025 is here! E3's replacement showcase by Geoff Keighley and his Game Awards group is back for another yearly show, debuting new trailers, new game announcements, and a heck of a lot of #ad's for gamers to sink their teeth into. It's the most exciting time of the year outside of actually playing the games themselves. Rumors are flying about release dates, new reveals, and more ahead of the show. There's talk of games like Silksong, Resident Evil 9, and many others appearing during the show which will likely last at least two hours and begin a weekend full of showings, so excitement is high, as always. But the wait is almost over. SGF 2025 begins on June 6 at 4pm CT, streaming live from Los Angeles, and we'll be live-blogging and keeping up with all of the announcements as they come in, so buckle up and get ready for a fest of games in the summer. 4. The Nintendo Switch 2 is launching with a handful of new games, but for many of the people getting one this week, the main thing to play on it is software made for the original Switch. We’ve known for months that the Switch 2 would maintain backward compatibility with the vast majority of Switch games, but one major question was whether the Switch 2’s improved hardware would benefit older Switch games in some way. Especially in recent years, first- and third-party Switch games have struggled with the original system’s aging Nvidia chipset, which was already a bit dated when the system came out in 2017. After a day or so of testing various Switch games on the Switch 2, we can report firsthand that Switch games can look dramatically better on the new system. For games that Nintendo has taken the trouble to update—those with Switch 2 upgrade packs and those with free updates—players can expect higher resolutions, better frame rates, less texture and character pop-in, and smoother animations all around. Even games that haven’t been updated for the Switch 2 can run a bit more consistently on the new systems, though games without Switch 2-specific updates don’t improve as much as games with updates. With the story seemingly focusing on a younger version of the titular protagonist, 007 First Light has the perfect chance to explore the mysterious origins of the secret agent with a brand-new direction for the series. Although details about its gameplay have been scarce so far, the trailer finally offered a glimpse at what we can expect to see in its full release. View the full article
  6. In Chapter 4 of Deltarune, I'm playing as a pixelated character named Kris when I encounter a hallway with a locked door, a step stool, and a bright green book on a shelf. Obviously I need to move the step stool so that Kris, or another party member, can reach the book and hit the switch mechanism I think is hidden behind it. But when I go to move the stool, there's no button prompt. I cannot do anything no matter how many times I press A. So I move on... Read more.View the full article
  7. I'm not at all a fan of the latest Marvel Rivals meta, but I've been drawn back into the third-person shooter thanks to a very unique and special experimental mode recently added to the game by NetEase. If you've missed out on the news, the limited time mode in Marvel Rivals is called Ultron's Battle Matrix Protocol, and it's like an entirely new game on top of the existing hero shooter that's currently at the top of my *****-list as far as how playing it makes me feel. Screenshot by Destructoid Ever since the season 2.5 update, Marvel Rivals has been more frustrating for me than anything else. The over-abundance of flying heroes like Ultron and Storm, along with new ridiculous team-ups like the one for Peni Parker and Rocket Raccoon, has the game feeling more like a chore than a joy. But with Ultron's BMP mode, I'm finding reasons to boot it up again. Auto-battlers, or Auto Chess as the game type has come to be known, are not for everyone. Games like Teamfight Tactics, Hearthstone Battlegrounds, Super Auto Pets, and Backpack Battles scratch a certain itch in that you're playing the game, but you're not. You're relaxing and doing minimal work, but also watching numbers get ******* and enemies go *****. You kind of either like it or you don't. I, for one, love it. I can't say the same for some of my teammates in the Rivals variant, like the one guy who said something along the lines of "how long does this take," and "I feel like I'm losing my mind" as the match wore on. In UBMP, you build your own team of heroes from a pre-selected pool of existing characters and set them out on the battlefield to fight against other players. Along the way, you collect upgrades and buffs for your characters to help them win auto-played fights against one another as you watch from above as an Ultron drone. You can also use your blaster to chip away at enemy players, plus heal your own teammates, and damage the other team once per round, so it's a bit more active then some other auto-battlers. But the fun comes in the strategy of picking a team comp, choosing who and what to buff, and where to place them each round. Screenshot by Destructoid I think you should give the mode a shot. If you need some extra encouragement, there are a couple of rewards to unlock along the way, including a spray and two emojis. But for me, I've just been enjoying playing the mode as a way to get my Marvel Rivals fix without greatly increasing my blood pressure after I solo tank for the ninth game in a row while trying to level up my battle pass. Ultron's Battle Matrix Protocol is an experimental mode, so it may be iterated on in the future. For now, this version will only be available until June 23. 10. With the Nintendo Switch 2 finally in my hands, naturally the first thing I set out to do was play the stuff that didn’t run great on the original Switch, just to see how much of an improvement the new console is. One at the top of the list was Hogwarts Legacy: an ambitious open-world game that really struggled on Switch. First, let's look back at why I loved it the first time around, when I reviewed it on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC. What We Said About Hogwarts Legacy (2023) In nearly every way, Hogwarts Legacy is the Harry Potter RPG I’ve always wanted to play. Its open-world adventure captures all the excitement and wonder of the Wizarding World with its memorable new characters, challenging and nuanced combat, and a wonderfully executed Hogwarts student fantasy that kept me glued to my controller for dozens of hours. It’s certainly weighed down by technical issues, a lackluster main story, and some poor enemy variety, but even those couldn’t come close to breaking its enchanting spell over me. – Travis Northup, Februrary 10, 2023 Score: 9 Read the full Hogwarts Legacy review [/url]Hogwarts Legacy is Close to Unplayable on the Switch 1 Before booting up Hogwarts Legacy on the Switch 2, I replayed through the first hours on the original Switch to see how it ran, and the result was pretty awful. This thing runs like a wounded animal, with extremely low-rez characters and environments, unstable framerates, and extremely long load times every time you fast travel. Exploring the Hogwarts campus, which is one of the best parts of this adventure on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, or PC, is especially irritating anytime you try to walk through a door and find it locked while it takes a couple seconds to load, sometimes even showing a little loading icon after a while. It got to the point where I’d sometimes think a door wasn’t interactable, until it suddenly swung open after I’d started to walk away. The gap in performance between this version and the versions available on other platforms is so huge that I honestly can’t even recommend playing it, even if you’ve got no other recourse. There’s just no way to experience all the things Hogwarts Legacy does really well when it’s chugging along like this. The Switch 2 is a Massive Step Up, Even If It Still Lags Way Behind the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Modern PCs Thankfully the Switch 2’s significantly more powerful hardware fixes a whole heck of a lot of this. It’s still not at parity with the Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5, or high-end PCs, but at least feels akin to what I remember the Xbox Series S feeling like – not 4K or anything, but more than good enough, especially considering that it all runs on a mobile device. (That’s pretty shocking.) I still noticed some pop-in and had a bug at one point that required me to reset, which are all the kinds of issues I saw in other versions, but it’s an absolutely massive improvement over the Switch 1 and plays great in docked and handheld mode. There Are Some Neat Updates Since the Last Time I Played There are also just a bunch of things added to Hogwarts Legacy since the last time I played, including a photo mode, which feels very important in what is essentially a Harry Potter Isekai life sim, and the ability to reset your skill tree selections so you don’t lock yourself into some rookie build. Plus, my personal favorite upgrade: they removed all the annoying platform-exclusive stuff, like the side quest that was only available on PS5, and added some new cosmetics to collect. For the Switch 2 specifically, Hogwarts Legacy also supports the new mouse mode, which allows you to swap between traditional joystick controls and using one of the Joy-Cons like a mouse if you prefer to aim that way. The mouse controls work surprisingly well, and I was able to aim in combat without issue. Still, I can’t really see myself using this over the standard joystick mode, just because it’s sorta uncomfortable to hold the Joy-**** on its side for extended periods of time and there’s really nothing wrong with just doing it the old way. But it’s definitely a neat option to have! I Still Really Like This Game It really stood out to me how much I still enjoyed playing this after over two years. Hogwarts remains one of the most detailed settings I’ve ever seen in a game, and I could lose hours exploring the grounds and practicing my spellcraft. Combat is also surprisingly interesting considering how lame it looks in the movies. They actually made whipping around a stick a lot of fun, as you juggle enemies in the air, parry and counter enemy attacks, and consider whether or not to just ******* people with very ******** curses. The main story is definitely still a weak point, with a pretty generic and uninteresting goblin villain and lots of vague talk about ancient magic. However, the characters you spend the journey with, from your fellow classmates to the professors who lecture you each day, more than make up for that shortcoming. I’m still bothered by all the stuff that bothered me about it two years ago, especially enemy variety, which somehow feels worse than I remember it being (boy, oh boy, does this thing make you fight spiders a lot). And some technical issues are still alive and well after all this time, which isn’t great. But this is still an incredibly good game that gave me almost everything I wanted as a Harry Potter fan. The fact that it’s now available on a device you can play on the subway without major sacrifices is just insane, and it makes me want to play through it all again the next time I get on a plane. 14. 3, 2, 1, go! Mario Kart World's racetracks are ******* than ever, and it's all because of an open world to explore in the all-new Free Roam mode. Mario Kart World gives players more freedom than ever in the franchise, opening up the map in Free Roam mode for everyone to drive around, practice new movement mechanics like wall ride and rail ride, find collectibles, and just have fun. Here's everything you need to know about how to play Free Roam mode in Mario Kart World on Nintendo Switch 2. How to Free Roam in Mario Kart World Screenshot and remix by Destructoid To play Free Roam in Mario Kart World, when at the main menu, press the + button. This will immediately and seamlessly let you take control of the character driving through the open world in the background. When in Free Roam, press the Y button to open up the world map. From here, you can instantly fast travel to any of the tracks on the map or select any of the characters on the map to switch to them and play as them immediately. When you hover over a racetrack, you can see how many secrets it has and how many you've collected, like the "?" panels you can drive over. You can do the same with each character to see how many costumes you've unlocked for them. The Free Roam map also has Dash Food at drive-thrus scattered around the world that you can pick up. When you use Dash Food, it has the potential to change your character's appearance and unlock new outfits and a new racer featuring said outfit. Screenshot by Destructoid There are also P-Switch challenges and Peach Medallions to be found throughout the world, so make sure to keep your eyes peeled (like a banana in the road) to spot everything you can while you explore the wonderful map. 15. I've always found Undertale and Deltarune charming. Although I've yet to finish my Undertale playthrough, the few hours I played put a smile on my face, which quickly disappeared once I realized how awful I am at bullet hell games. Deltarune is an entirely different beast, though, and it's one I've grown to appreciate. I'd heard a lot about Deltarune through one of my best friends who, for reasons I didn't understand until recently, frequently raved about its hilarious jokes, playful characters, and fun gameplay mechanics that expanded on Undertale's structure. I've been intrigued about it for a while, and the announcement of Chapters 3 and 4's arrival finally prompted me to try it. When I say this is one of the funniest games I've ever played in my life, I mean it. Screenshot by Destructoid I already thought Deltarune's first two chapters were great. Chapter One serves as your introduction to the main characters, the Dark World, and what types of adventures the team will encounter throughout the next few chapters. The second chapter ramps up its charm and humor, with its final boss, in particular, featuring some amusing, screenshot-worthy moments. Sure, I wasn't quite committed to slapping a perfect score on it at this point, but I was definitely interested in seeing where the story would go from here. Chapter 3 cranks up the humor to 100. I'll come out and say it—this is by far the funniest one I've encountered so far, no competition. The main character you meet early in the chapter immediately sets the stage (literally) as a wacky, overdramatic jokester with more layers to their personality than an onion. Several recurring jokes appear throughout the chapter, particularly in its first half, which had me pausing to laugh alongside my aforementioned best friend, who found them equally enjoyable. Chapter 4, on the other hand, dials things down to a more serious tone. Although we start to notice some of Kris, Susie, and Ralsei's struggles early on in the game, these are all expanded upon in Chapter 4. It makes you realize that there's more to Deltarune than endless jokes and that an in-depth story is unfolding before our very eyes. While not every character we meet has complicated lore and history behind them, they all contribute to the story in some way and impact our team's dynamic in each passing conversation. Screenshot by Destructoid I enjoyed Chapters 3 and 4 for very different reasons. Chapter 3 throws wacky shenanigans and peculiar minigames beyond the usual bullet hell combat experience into the mix, while Chapter 4 is noticeably more serious with its tone. Both perfectly contrast one another while still keeping a natural flow to the game's story. I went into Deltarune feeling indifferent about it. By the end of its second chapter, I found myself interested, albeit not fully passionate. Chapters 3 and 4 have completely transformed me into a delighted fan who craves more. Deltarune is what I wish Undertale to be, offering a fulfilling experience that masterfully combines multiple gaming genres into a nice, goofy title. I'm looking forward to what future chapters will entail and where the story will branch from here, especially regarding certain major characters introduced in these two chapters.
