There’s no question that one of the biggest talking points during last week’s Gamescom Asia x Thailand Game Show came out of Dead Space creator Glen Schofield’s opening keynote address, regarding his plans to “fix” the industry in part via the use of generative AI in games development. In addition to speaking with Schofield, IGN managed to get some time with another industry veteran, Meghan Morgan Juinio, to ask for her thoughts on the controversial practice that has previously been met with anger from Call of Duty fans, but also major support from games industry executives like EA CEO Andrew Wilson. “I think if we don’t embrace it, I think we’re selling ourselves short,” said Juinio, who recently vacated her role as director of product development at Santa Monica Studio after 10 years and two hugely successful God of War games. “AI is a tool, and something that will augment us. At least for right now, that’s how I see it. It’s going to evolve whether you’re onboard with it or not, so I want to be at the forefront of helping to guide how that goes and how we use it.” Juinio went on to compare the use of generative AI to the procedurally-generated content that's been a part of games development for decades now, pointing to SpeedTree – a tool for generating trees in real time – which was used as early as 2002 for the foliage in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. She also recalled a time when animators were pushing back against motion capture and the use of procedural generation to blend animation frames rather than key them by hand. Both procedurally generated assets and animations have long become standard practices in games development, and Juinio seems just as confident that generative AI will also find its place. “Personally, I’m super positive,” said Juinio. “Like [Glen Schofield said in his keynote address], this is the next big technological advancement that’s coming. In fact it’s here already, and I think as leaders in the video game industry it is on us to figure out not just can we do it with AI, but should we? And it’s a case-by-case type of decision making process and what's true for game X might not be true next year for game Y.” When asked if she thought the increasing adoption of generative AI might help mitigate the swelling costs of AAA-games development, Juinio was clear that the use of AI in games development is unlikely to be the be-all end-all solution to the post-pandemic pattern of regular studio closures and the bursting of the blockbuster game bubble. “I wouldn’t necessarily put it into an either/or kind of scenario in that way, because to me the size and scale and beauty of the game isn’t the main thing,” said Juinio. “At its heart, the game [needs] to be fun. [Ideally] at its heart the story is fantastic, it’s human, players connect to it, and it’s fun to play.” “And yes it looks beautiful, and yes the music is immersive. But the music could be really immersive and the gameplay could be not good, or the story [might] not be engaging, and I don't think it would resonate with players as much. And so at least for right now, I don't see AI replacing the fun gameplay that is at the heart of a game like God of War.” Although Juinio seems adament that generative AI in games development is here to stay, she also remains confident that it will never be able to rival the heart and soul that can only come from a human touch, and that the adoptance of AI will only be a positive if there's an equal amount of investment made into developers to help them get the best results out of it. “At the end of the day you still need game developers to come up with the ideas,” said Juinio. “The story of God of War is very much a human story that is based on human experiences.” “At least as of today, I don’t see that going away.” Earlier this month the makers of Battlefield 6 stated that there was currently no way to implement the use of generative AI into the daily work of its development team, despite regarding the burgeoning technology as “very seducing”. Indeed the debate over generative AI is ******* than in-game assets. Festival of the Lost has a new SMG, Gunburn, which is bound to strike fear into the heart of the Headless Ones. The new Kinetic Lightweight weapon brings the newly released Kinetic perks, as well as one of the most wanted traits in primaries that don't deal elemental damage. Gunburn already faces steep competition against the Multimach CCX, which is a beloved, easily available, god-rolled legacy SMG with Attrition Orbs/Kinetic Tremors available at Banshee-44's stand. Still, Gunburn gets up to 10 percent more damage since it counts as new gear, which may be enough to consider switching, and its perk pool also comes with new additions. Here are our Gunburn god rolls for PvE in Destiny 2's Festival of the Lost, based on perk info from [Hidden Content]. Gunburn PvE god roll in Destiny 2 The base version looks better than the Holofoil, even if it is less flashy. In our Gunburn god roll, we're aiming for the staple Kinetic perks: Bewildering Burst in the third column, plus Kinetic Tremors and/or Ancillary Ordnance in the fourth. Gunburn's third column isn't much of a struggle. Bewildering Burst is by far our favorite option, since it can disorient enemies without much setup. If you're looking for something else, Pugilist is usually a good choice for melee-based builds, while Lead from Light can help you get some extra Special ammo. Threat Detector isn't bad either, especially since Gunburn's base reload speed isn't great, and Lone Wolf can be a bit redundant with the Search Party origin trait (though Veist Stinger might be the play here). Still, we think the Kinetic-exclusive perk comes out on top. The fourth column has more viable options: Kinetic Tremors and Ancillary Ordnance are our favorite picks, though One For All continues to bring a strong damage buff. Attrition Orbs is in this column, which means it's up against some heavy-hitters and probably won't see much use here. Binary Orbit can work, especially with access to Solar, Arc, or Void damage, though we're leaning toward the others. For parts, our priority is getting faster reloads, preferably with some stability thrown into the mix. These aren't the most decisive aspects of the weapon, however, so this should be more of a tie-breaker than actual criteria. All in all, you can find plenty of options in Gunburn, though we recommend focusing on the Kinetic parts of its kit—especially if you're using the Techsec set bonus. How to get Gunburn in Destiny 2 Get it while you can. Image via Bungie The Gunburn SMG is available as part of Festival of the Lost and debuted in the event's 2025 edition. It has a chance of dropping wherever you can get Festival of the Lost Engrams. Haunted Altars is your safest bet, with two Eerie Engrams and a chance of bonus drops. Certain Portal activities, which are marked by an Eerie Engram icon, may also give you some Halloween-styled rewards. The SMG is bound to disappear once the event ends, however, so it's best to go for a roll while the celebrations live. Though the usual bugs aren't around in this year's Festival of the Lost, Destiny 2 players have found new ones—including a particularly egregious softlock in the new activity, Haunted Altars, which can block your progress. While there's no confirmed cause, there are a few ways to fix it. The softlock in Haunted Altars can cause players to glitch out at the end of an activity and invalidate everything until that point, sometimes triggering after taking down half of the Headless One's health bar. It's especially annoying if you get it multiple times in a row, and with how widespread this issue seems to be, it's certainly not a stretch. Here's what may cause it and what you can do to fix it. What causes the Haunted Altars softlock in Destiny 2 The softlock is the scariest part of the event. Image via Bungie While nothing is confirmed yet, there are a couple of hypotheses behind what can trigger this unpleasant glitch. One is that you're not supposed to burn down the boss too fast. Getting softlocked for being too efficient isn't uncommon in Destiny 2, and Bungie seems to be looking at this as the main cause. A hypothesis that surfaced among the community, on the other hand, theorizes the Stunning Emotes modifier may affect the Shriekers, causing them to glitch out permanently. If this is the case, it may become less prevalent if the mission's modifiers rotate out or the studio removes the problem mutator from play. The most common softlock we encountered is not being able to deal damage to the boss after its first health gate, and it may have a couple of fixes. Image via Bungie Wiping the activity fixed our first softlock in the encounter, which likely happened due to guardians dealing too much damage to the boss too quickly. Wiping the squad to the Headless One reset the instance and allowed us to take another shot at it, going easy on the boss this time. This solution comes with a couple of downsides. First, it's hard to get everyone on the same page for a wipe. More often than not, some guardians will just leave, and matchmaking may not find other players. Second, this method only works on difficulties below Ultimatum, since the Extinguish modifier sends you to Orbit if the entire party dies. Taking your foot off the gas in the boss fight may also prevent a softlock, according to Bungie. "In the first phase of the boss fight, wait the 10 seconds until the Shriekers close, and then complete the damage phase to avoid the soft lock," the studio recommended. This isn't a fix, but it's a potential preventative measure. If Stunning Emotes is causing the glitch, however, there doesn't seem to be an easy fix. The Shriekers start off the mission as your enemies and change sides after doing certain mechanics, so it's possible the modifier still acknowledges them as foes and bugs out, even at the end of the run. There's also the chance that the cause is something else entirely. Both scenarios are difficult to control, especially if you're matchmaking, since the activity is meant for six guardians and not all of them may be aware of how to stop the softlock from happening. Bungie is still investigating the causes behind this issue, so the developer may come up with an interim fix or workaround. Until then, avoid using emotes and melting the boss. Like our content? The new Steam Personalized Calendar is a look at both recently released and upcoming games, filtered down to the the set of games we think you are most likely to be interested in. We're launching this feature as a Steam Labs experiment, as we'd like your feedback to help make the best possible version of this tool. Read on for more details, or just check out the Personal Calendar page and see for yourself. Recommendations based your playtimeThis new calendar finds people with similar playtime profiles to you, and then looks at the games those players have been adding to their wishlist. Based on games you play a lot: The system is more focused on games that you play the most (relative to other players), and spend most of your playtime in. So, a few minutes trying out a couple of new games or demos won't have much impact on your recommendations, but sinking a bunch of time into a new favorite will. Refreshed daily: This recommendation system gets re-trained daily to incorporate the latest data. In reality you aren't likely to see your recommendations change all that much from day to day, but as time goes by you will obviously see new things pop up as the 8-week horizon of the calendar marches forward, or as games lock in their release dates. Upcoming releases: Calendar view Steam already has lists for upcoming releases, including Popular Upcoming and All Upcoming. However, we've been drawn to the idea of having a visual representation of upcoming releases in calendar form to help understand how far away an exciting new launch is. So this new calendar view takes the list of soon-to-release titles, filters them down to the set that we recommend most for you, and maps them out across time for you to see at-a-glance. You'll find that some days have a bunch of exciting releases for you while others may only have one or none. Includes your wishlists: The calendar view also includes any game that you have already added to your wishlist, regardless of whether the system recommends it; you've already expressed interest in that game, and you likely want to know when it is coming out. Weekdays only: We intentionally focus the calendar on weekdays since very few games release on weekends and we wanted as much space as possible to show the games that are planning on releasing. The rare games that do have weekend release dates will show up on the calendar on the following Monday. Recent releases: Week and month views For recent releases, we experimented with a few different views and found that it felt less important to map out already released games on a daily calendar view. When we were talking with our friends and colleagues about recent releases, it was usually in the context of something we were playing this week or this month rather than which specific day it came out on. But, we'd love your feedback. For new releases, are you concerned about which day that game came out on, or just that it is a recent release? Customization controlsThere are a few different options to control what you see on this page. Filter by tagLooking for something particular? Use the tag selector. By default, it lists out tags applied to games you've recently played. But you can also type in any valid store tag to narrow down your results. Adjust the number of resultsWhile working on this page, we tried out a few different thresholds for the number of games to display. Too few results and the calendar is pretty empty; too many and it can be an overwhelming experience. We settled on 100 as providing a good level of information density, but we're curious what you think. You can adjust the picker at the top of the page to see more or fewer titles. As you increase the number of titles shown, the quality of fit for those recommendations will decrease, resulting in more games that are further afield from what you typically play. Recommendations based your playtimeThis new calendar finds people with similar playtime profiles to you, and then looks at the games those players have been adding to their wishlist. Based on games you play a lot: The system is more focused on games that you play the most (relative to other players), and spend most of your playtime in. So, a few minutes trying out a couple of new games or demos won't have much impact on your recommendations, but sinking a bunch of time into a new favorite will. Refreshed daily: This recommendation system gets re-trained daily to incorporate the latest data. In reality you aren't likely to see your recommendations change all that much from day to day, but as time goes by you will obviously see new things pop up as the 8-week horizon of the calendar marches forward, or as games lock in their release dates. Upcoming releases: Calendar view Steam already has lists for upcoming releases, including Popular Upcoming and All Upcoming. However, we've been drawn to the idea of having a visual representation of upcoming releases in calendar form to help understand how far away an exciting new launch is. So this new calendar view takes the list of soon-to-release titles, filters them down to the set that we recommend most for you, and maps them out across time for you to see at-a-glance. You'll find that some days have a bunch of exciting releases for you while others may only have one or none. Includes your wishlists: The calendar view also includes any game that you have already added to your wishlist, regardless of whether the system recommends it; you've already expressed interest in that game, and you likely want to know when it is coming out. Weekdays only: We intentionally focus the calendar on weekdays since very few games release on weekends and we wanted as much space as possible to show the games that are planning on releasing. The rare games that do have weekend release dates will show up on the calendar on the following Monday. Recent releases: Week and month views For recent releases, we experimented with a few different views and found that it felt less important to map out already released games on a daily calendar view. When we were talking with our friends and colleagues about recent releases, it was usually in the context of something we were playing this week or this month rather than which specific day it came out on. But, we'd love your feedback. For new releases, are you concerned about which day that game came out on, or just that it is a recent release? Customization controlsThere are a few different options to control what you see on this page. Filter by tagLooking for something particular? Use the tag selector. By default, it lists out tags applied to games you've recently played. But you can also type in any valid store tag to narrow down your results. Adjust the number of resultsWhile working on this page, we tried out a few different thresholds for the number of games to display. Too few results and the calendar is pretty empty; too many and it can be an overwhelming experience. We settled on 100 as providing a good level of information density, but we're curious what you think. You can adjust the picker at the top of the page to see more or fewer titles. As you increase the number of titles shown, the quality of fit for those recommendations will decrease, resulting in more games that are further afield from what you typically play. Already respects your preferencesThis page already filters out games based on choices you've made in your store content preferences, such as Early Access titles, ignored products, ignored tags, and general level of mature content. Starfield managed to be both one of my favorite games of 2023 and one of my biggest videogame disappointments ever. I sank well over 100 hours into it, and enjoyed the flashes of Bethesda brilliance it exhibited, but my lofty expectations weren't matched. The developer's renowned for making some of the best RPGs ever with Fallout and The Elder Scrolls, but Starfield couldn't entirely replicate its past magic due to the sheer size of its galaxy. Now, a Bethesda veteran who's worked across all three IPs has given his verdict. While adamant it's still "a great game" that the studio should be proud of, he knows it's nowhere near "the same caliber" as Fallout and TES. Read the rest of the story...
