  1. Boring, lack of interest, dull, and burnout aren’t the comments you want to hear regarding game development, but they are all currently being used to describe Pokémon Go by players. Over the weekend, parts of the community voiced their concerns over a lack of interest in the mobile Pokémon game, pointing towards a lul of activity in their local areas for various reasons. 3. Another Crab's Treasure is firmly in the sights of speedrunners, with one dedicated player hitting credits in less than 40 minutes. The game - which usually takes around 13 hours to beat if you're focused on main objectives alone - finds itself at this sweet spot where folks are really nailing down the fastest routes. The speedrunner in question is LilAggy, a Soulslike player and content creator who specialises in speedrunning and challenge runs for various games in that subgenre. They've been taking a ****** at Another Crab's Treasure ever since the game released late April, and have finally managed to whittle a run down to the sub-40 minute mark. You can watch the run yourself here, via a Twitch recording of LilAggy's run. It has a bunch of cool little details that should appeal to the speed freaks out there. This includes specific "lines" that allow players to maintain momentum between objectives, as well as various techniques that allow LilAggy to move at max speed for as long as possible. If you're just interested in the major stuff though, I recommend watching the Inkerton skip at roughly the 28 minute mark, as well as the Camtshca skip at 31:50 (aka the bubble boost). 4. The days of Square Enix making loads of medium-budget games might be over, as it outlines its new medium-term business plan. Square Enix might not be a developer that always hits it out of the park, but you can't say that it doesn't have a pretty broad portfolio. Only problem is, even with its tentpoles like Final Fantasy, its games never quite seem to meet its expectations. Just last month it was reported that the developer had to take a $140 million loss as it cancelled several games. Now, Square Enix has shared its new medium-term business plan for the fiscal years 2025-2027, and it sounds like some big changes are being planned. For one, as odd a plan as it might sound given it does release games on various platforms, Square Enix will be moving to a multiplatform strategy. "For HD titles, the Group will aggressively pursue a multiplatform strategy that includes Nintendo platforms, PlayStation, Xbox, and PCs," writes Square Enix. "Especially, in regards to major franchises and AAA titles including catalog titles, it will build an environment where more customers can enjoy our titles." Essentially, it sounds like it wants to be able to bring more of its titles to various platforms, where currently certain games might only release on the Switch or PS5. It went on to mention mobile titles, writing, "it will also devise a platform strategy for SD titles that includes not only iOS and Android, but also the possibility of PC launches." 5. Square Enix is revamping its PlayStation-centric approach and planning to commit fully to multiplatform releases for its major titles following poor sales in FY23-24. In its Q4 2024 financial reports, the ********* developer-publisher said it’d “aggressively pursue a multiplatform strategy that includes Nintendo platforms, PlayStation, Xbox, and PCs.” This is to “build an environment where more customers can enjoy” Square Enix titles. 7. Following a glorious VCT Americas win, star VALORANT IGL Kelden “Boostio” Pupello has reignited an old banter he initiated with Nadeshot on X (formerly Twitter), reminding the 100 Thieves boss of a much-deserving “thank you” that was never said. In a tweet on May 12, Boostio uploaded a clip of him placing the 2024 VCT Americas Split prize in the trophy cabinet at 100 Thieves’ boot camp and tagged Nadeshot with a proud “You’re welcome.” But the banter isn’t as simple as it looks. 8. Some fresh astral **** trivia from my accidental molar expedition a few weeks back: each of the Maw's teeth is different. Some form a fractal baleen network of crosshatched layers disappearing backward into the vanishing point; others are shaped like lockpicks, raccoon heads and semi-detached houses. This week's new game releases are no less motley and misshapen, though thankfully not quite as heavily varnished with plaque: there's something in the shop for everyone, I think. 9. While NRG might have a trophy, everyone who partook in last weekend’s David’s Cup is a winner, with organizer Nouns Esports and the Counter-Strike 2 community banding together to raise over $10,000 in the memory of the late David “cynic” Polster. The community raised $12,640 during David’s Cup for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), smashing Nouns’ original $5,000 target. “Thank you to all the production, talent, and people who made this event possible: Us at nouns can’t thank you enough for making this happen and honoring David and his life,” the org said in a May 12 tweet. 10. The reigning world champion T1 are in a pickle after losing to BLG at MSI 2024. AD carry Gumayusi says the team has to undergo a “complete overhaul” or they might lose to their next opponent, Team Liquid. In an interview with Korizon’s Ashley Kang on May 12, Gumayusi said, “I think we might win easily if we can do what we do best, but if we go into the series against TL without patching our weaknesses, I also think we might end up losing,” reflecting on T1’s immediate need for preparations to gear up for their upcoming do-or-**** MSI series. 11. After Hades 2 shadow dropped in early access on May 6, The Rogue Prince of Persia developer, Evil Empire, admitted it’s “not prideful enough” to be able to compete with such a title, which is why its delayed PoP until the end of May. Although the delayed release of Rogue PoP isn’t the best news, fans empathize and praise Evil Empire for its “wise and understandable decision” about delaying the release date, even though the dev is confident in its upcoming roguelite. 12. Fallout 4‘s next-gen update may have come with a substantial offering of free Creation Club content, but it doesn’t cover everything. The Manwell Rifle Creation is among those that are still premium, adding two powerful rifles that remain viable into the endgame… albeit with a few hoops to jump through. If you’ve already put the credits down, actually getting your hands on the paired weapons will involve perception, patience and a whole lot of Nuka-Cola Quantum. Interestingly, this is one of the only Creation Club mini-quests to offer a choice at the end, although the consequences aren’t exactly significant or far-reaching. View the full article
  13. After several controversies and an unsatisfactory run in the VCT 2024 Pacific league’s first spilt, VALORANT star yay is officially taking a temporary leave of absence. His organization BLEED Esports cited “health reasons” as the reason behind yay’s decision and pledged its support for the 25-year-old star. This is the second time yay has taken a hiatus from VALORANT while at BLEED; after joining the team in September 2023, he stepped back in early December just before the VALORANT ONE Pro Invitational, also due to “unforeseen health issues.” View the full article
  14. From a shortened three-week season right through to the hilarious skits, Season 19 of ESL Pro League delivered on all fronts, and the organizer was rewarded in kind with average viewership spiking for the first time in two years. While peak concurrents were down for the grand final between MOUZ and Vitality on May 12, the average Counter Strike 2 viewership for this EPL season was at its highest since season 16 in 2022, according to Esports Charts. 154,967 fans tuned in on average throughout the tournament—almost 20 percent higher than in 2023—while over 370,000 watched MOUZ take out EPL and claim back-to-back league titles. 15. A Destiny 2 player's new customized armor set has made it seem like The Last City has enlisted the power of the Saiyans in its ****** against the Witness. Their Son Goku-themed Destiny 2 costume drew praise from fellow players for cleverly using armor pieces and well-coordinated shaders to evoke the character's iconic look. View the full article
  16. Welcome to yet another week of paying a little for a lot. The Microsoft and PlayStation stores are starting to warm up with a bunch of decent sales events—the pick of which are represented below. I'm also keeping an eye on Amazon for any sign of extraordinarily early EOFY deals as well. Not much doing there. But I'll be ready to holler if and when they appear. In retro news, I'm celebrating the 32nd birthday of Street Fighter II: Champion Edition, a game whose industry impact cannot be overstated. Obviously, 1991's World Warrior was the opening jab, but the Champion Edition revision was a $2.3 billion knockout cross that put Capcom in the top three highest grossing arcade games of all time list. Nineties gaming gromets like myself queued outside of arcades for the $1 privilege to play this, thanks to its mirror match permissiveness, playable bosses, balance tweaks, and more unique takes on Ryu and Ken. 17. Destiny 2 fans are abuzz with excitement as a player shares a captivating exotic ******* design inspired by flintlock pistols. Destiny 2, developed by Bungie, is an online multiplayer first-person shooter game. Set in a sprawling sci-fi universe, players assume the roles of Guardians, tasked with defending humanity against various alien threats. The game offers a rich tapestry of PvE and PvP activities, including story-driven campaigns, challenging raids, intense Crucible matches, and expansive open-world exploration. View the full article
  18. MInecraft is full of quirky mobs and terrifying creatures as it is, but one fan is taking things a step further and reimagining some of them as titanic beasts, starting with the squid, which they gave a colossal makeover with their artwork. The art of the Minecraft mob depicts a giant, blocky squid with long, protruding tentacles and an elaborate elongated head resembling that of an octopus. View the full article
  19. An Overwatch 2 player highlights a significant oversight regarding potential skins for the tank hero Doomfist. Tank heroes play a crucial role in Overwatch 2, serving as the frontline defenders and protectors of their team. With their high health pools and abilities to absorb damage, tank heroes create space for their teammates to operate, control objectives, and initiate team fights. View the full article
  20. ********* yourself in the foot to ruin a winning formula seems to be a time-honored tradition in the gaming industry these days. Today, look no further than Marvel Rivals, an Overwatch-style hero shooter starring all your favorite Marvel characters (just not the way you know them, because actor likenesses are expensive). In pre-release contracts handed out to certain gaming influencers, Marvel Rivals developer NetEase included a clause stipulating no “subjective negative reviews” could be made about the game, only to now walk it back after widespread backlash. 21. Some new claims made by notable Xbox content creator, Rand al Thor 19, suggest that Microsoft is preparing to raise the price of Xbox Game Pass again in the near future. In what has been a wave of bad news for the Xbox brand over the last week or so, yet another price increase for Xbox Game Pass is probably the last thing most subscribers want to hear. There could, however, be a silver lining to all of these rumors. View the full article
  22. Hogwarts Legacy allows its players to step into the life of a student at Hogwarts Castle from the Harry Potter franchise, undergoing several of the same rituals as in the books and movies, like the Sorting Ceremony. 24. One experienced Fallout 76 player has recently taken to social media to bemoan the fact that the only way to acquire the entirety of the game's seasonal rewards is to acquire more in-game currency than it's actually possible to spend. Recent information from a reliable Genshin Impact source links one of the most mysterious Fatui Harbingers with the upcoming region of Natlan, while also confirming mounts as its main exploration feature. Since launch, Genshin Impact has kept details about Natlan and its volcanic landscape sparse.
