  1. After days of theorizing, speculation, and community research, it's official - Destiny 2 developer Bungie has confirmed that "an issue has been found in our code" that has been affecting drop rates for certain ******* perk combinations. Bungie says it is now "rapidly working" to provide a fix for this extraordinary bug. While it's only taken a matter of days for this to go from a fan theory to a confirmed, significant technical issue, it's a bug that has likely been plaguing the space shooter for a very long time. 2. Killer7 is a game that's pretty hard to sum up and defies categorization. It's everything all at once - it's a bubbling **** of ideas thrown at the player which somehow manages to work. It's a frothing, fizzing thing that shouldn't hold together but absolutely does, and nearly 20 years later it's still held up as one of the greatest gaming experiences you can ever play. PC owners had to wait a long time to get their hands on it, and now six years after it arrived on Steam it's been given a fresh lick of paint. Read the rest of the story... 3. Today's release adds support for hand tracking pass-through in Steam Link for Meta Quest. This update does not introduce full hand tracking support for SteamVR's UI. It does allow for hand tracking in limited ways using input bindings, so users can experiment with it in games by creating a binding for that game and mapping various inputs from Meta's hand tracking to game inputs using the Binding UI in Controller Settings. Please note that if you have hand tracking enabled on your headset, and tap your controllers together, it will start hand tracking. If you experience difficulty with hand tracking, you can always turn it off in your Meta Quest settings by disabling "hand and body tracking" in device permissions. Hand tracking is forwarded to the host PC using SteamVR skeletal input, both for skeletal input in SteamVR Input, as well as the XR_EXT_hand_tracking OpenXR extension. This release also includes a variety of bug fixes and quality of life improvements across SteamVR, our OpenXR API, and Steam Link. We continue to focus on OpenXR as our preferred API for new games and applications. SteamVR’s official OpenXR subforum is here and we’d love to hear your feedback, as well as suggestions for new features. SteamVR: Dashboard Grab Handles have a new movement model that includes accelerated movement towards and away from the user. Eye gaze information may be passed through OpenXR via XR_EXT_eye_gaze_interaction if enabled in the Steam Link settings. Note: Any users who previously had the "Share eye tracking data to other apps on this PC via OSC" option enabled, they will need to enable "Share eye tracking data to other apps on this PC" in Steam Link settings, and it will enable eye tracking data sharing both for OpenXR and OSC (if enabled). 4. I've been a big fan of Warhammer 40,000 ever since I was around 11. When I first stepped into a Games Workshop shop and browsed the endless overpriced boxes, I was drawn to the Imperial Guard - aka Astra Militarum - compelled by the slick uniforms of the Cadian soldiers, the nimble and almost patchwork-like design of the Sentinels, and the sheer firepower of the various armored vehicles from Leman Russes to Basilisk artillery. For the most part, my love of the Imperial Guard has lasted, endlessly rereading novels like Desert Raiders, Fall of Cadia, and, naturally, Ciaphas Cain omnibuses. View the full article
  5. Apple is developing a movie based on Oregon Trail, the beloved educational computer game that has spawned multiple generations of in-jokes and memes among gamers. THR reports that the film, which is currently early in development, will be an action-comedy with a handful of musical numbers in the vein of Barbie. Will Speck and Josh Gordon are reportedly attached to direct, with Kenny and Keith Lucas penning the screenplay alongside Max Reisman. The story, as you might expect, will be about a 19th-century covered wagon train traveling to the Willamette Valley in Oregon. The musical aspect offers a glimpse of what to expect, suggesting that it will be a fairly irreverent take on the historical adventure. Songwriters and producers Benji Pasek and Justin Paul, who are best-known for their work on La La Land, are among those involved in the film. The original game was developed as a text-based adventure in 1971 and produced by the Minnesota Educational Computer Consortium starting in 1975. It found a lasting place in pop culture as generations of ********* school children watched their characters **** of typhoid, dysentary, and all manner of other maladies, or wandered around ********* way too many buffalo. Oregon Trail looks to be the latest classic game to get its own movie, following in the footsteps of Super Mario Bros. and other well-known franchises. The trend has found mixed success, with Mario earning more than a billion dollars, but Borderlands being a flop at the box office. The Oregon Trail does not yet have a release date. 18. Note: This review specifically covers the Zombies mode in Call of Duty: ****** Ops 6. For our thoughts on the other modes, see our single-player campaign review or our multiplayer review in progress. You ever wonder how we got here? Not in an existential, “where did we come from?” kind of way, but more specifically “how did a one-off, co-op survival mode in a video game that used to put quotes about the horrors of war on screen when you ***** turn into this?” 16 years on, it’s hard to reconcile what the original ***** Zombies mode from 2008’s World at War used to be with the outrageous, Resident Evil 6-inspired campfest I spent several red-eyed hours playing late last night. I’m not saying any of this in a bad way, mind you; ****** Ops 6’s take on the mode is thrilling and unique thanks to all new movement mechanics and good map design. Zombies hasn’t been the thing it was in World at War for a while, and I still have a lot more of this year’s version to play before I am ready for my final review, but that one thought has still hit me pretty hard so far: How did we get here, man? Let’s carve out the ******* guts of this thing, shall we? ****** Ops 6’s Zombies mode features two all-new maps: Terminus, a prison complex-turned-bio-research-station, and Liberty Falls, a small town in West Virginia whose slice of quaint Americana is about to test itself against The Worst Day Ever (spoiler: it doesn’t seem to be going well for the Americana). The story itself is a direct sequel to the Zombies campaign in 2020’s ****** Ops Cold War, and if you, like me, have largely forgotten what happened in the intervening four years, there doesn’t seem to be much attempt to catch you up. That means you’re going to hear a lot of proper-noun-filled dialogue that could be important or fun references, but instead had me going “I vaguely remember that person,” a little too often. What we said about Modern Warfare 3's Zombies mode Operation Deadbolt's attempt to reanimate Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’s Zombies mode by merging it with the machinery of DMZ isn't always successful, but it's not an inherently bad idea. When you start hitting on the right combinations of difficulty, planning, and random chance, it leads to fun, intense moments that leverage some of the best ideas from both. But what's fun here is frequently undercut by way too much time spent grinding for gear needed to survive the intense enemies in the center of the map, busywork story objectives, and crashes that can ***** any ******* to play. Operation Deadbolt has great moments of tough battles against ****** monsters that had me full of panic and dread, but only if I was willing to put in a lot of time and effort to make them happen. - Phil Hornshaw, November 16, 2023 Score: 6 Read the full Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Zombies review. [/url] Mostly, I wanted the voices in my ear (and the characters I was playing) to shut up. They have what I’m going to call The Modern Video Game Character Problem™, which is to say they all talk too much – especially since half the time they’re just broadcasting their thoughts out loud. I’m not saying each and every one of them is a deeply annoying, terminally unfunny, outrageously unlikeable person, but I’m not not saying that, either. Their mid-combat banter is like something compiled from a Schwarzenegger film penned by ChatGPT – I’m not expecting poetry here, but at least give me Gears of War-level banter, you know? I can only hear lines like the one where someone is complaining about how the zombies make them so **** they “boil their *****” or how we need a mop to clean up all the brains we’re splattering everywhere so many times before I want to turn my **** towards my allies instead. So the story is a mixed bag so far, but you know what isn’t? The gameplay. The biggest change here is Omnimovement (Zombiemovement?), ****** Ops 6’s complete overhaul of Call of Duty’s basic movement mechanics. You can sprint, slide, and ***** in every direction, even chaining these moves together. You’ve also got a full 360 degrees of motion, which means you can do ***** stuff like sprint backwards, pull off a retreating *****, mow down the zombies approaching you from every angle, and then get up and keep moving before they even get close. We haven’t seen zombie-******** moves like this since Resident Evil 6, ****** a few suplexes here and there. (Dear Treyarch, please add suplexes. Love, Will.) Even if Treyarch misses what might be the easiest post-launch, patch-introduced layup with that, though, the point I’m making is that this feels good, and I like it. I like it a lot. The story may be a mixed bag so far, but the gameplay feels good. I also like the maps themselves. I think I prefer Liberty Falls over Terminus so far because I dig its height, with extremely entertaining ziplines that let you zoom from roof to roof. I also enjoy its more traditional structure of “pay Essence to open doors and access new places” over Terminus’s “restore power to the generators and defend them from zombies so you can earn the ability to open doors” twist, but that’s not to say Terminus doesn’t do anything cool. At one point, I found a little outboard-powered raft that allowed me to venture to the smaller islands around the main area. I ***** pretty promptly, because when I landed on a beach a horde of zombies popped out of the ground like a bunch of really ******, undead cabbages, but c’est la vie, right? C’est la undead? I don’t speak French. I’m a bit more mixed on the way the maps handle progression through the story. Based on what I’ve played so far, you don’t really do much “defending” in ****** Ops 6’s version of zombies. Instead, you’re constantly moving, unlocking new areas and trying to complete that map’s Main Quest during rounds. You can pretty much do this however you want. In my experience, that means a lot of running for your life and trying to earn enough Essence (which you get from offing zombies) to open the way to the next area, buy a new *******, or upgrade a **** you like at a Pack-a-Punch Machine, which does exactly what it sounds like. Treyarch plans on providing an optional, more guided, story-focused version of the mode later on to preserve the sanctity of the Easter Egg hunt (whatever that means) – that will disable Easter Eggs and Side Quests, but I kind of wish it was here now so I could see the difference it makes. These maps are really big, and as someone with an absolutely terrible sense of direction, I’d just like to get a feel for where I’m supposed to go and how to get there before I focus on optional stuff. One thing I really don’t like, at least so far, is the meta-progression. You don’t unlock the ability to make your own loadouts until you hit level four, and even then, you probably haven’t unlocked anything fun to customize on any of the guns you have yet. What’s more, progression feels painfully slow; I hit level four after an hour and a half of game time, which feels too long to wait for that basic functionality. I’ve only played by myself as of now, which I’m sure has slowed me down, but the delay still doesn’t feel great. What’s more, the lack of customization in the early going made my runs (two on Liberty Falls, one on Terminus) feel samey in a way I didn’t like. Hopefully, playing with friends will solve this problem, but it’s something I’m wary of as I continue. There’s a lot I haven’t touched on yet, like in-map progression and upgrades (my early impression is actually “there might be too many mechanics here”), so I want to spend more time with this year’s Zombies mode before I finalize this review and put a score on it sometime next week. For right now, I’m excited to play more, and still kind of in awe at how we got here. Undeath sure is strange, huh soldier? View the full article
  19. Insomniac Games has published an update for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 that allows players to take advantage of the graphics and performance options for the upcoming PlayStation 5 Pro. The Sony developer announced the update, along with a similar update for 2021’s Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, on social media today. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 patch 1.004 is almost entirely focused granting owners of the soon-to-release console additional visual options to ensure they are either swinging through New York City with improved graphics or a higher framerate. Insomniac says that the default will be set to Performance Pro mode, which targets 60fps “while retaining the image quality of the standard Fidelity mode through use of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR).” This is the setting that the team recommends, as it also toggles on all ray-tracing (RT) features. On the flip side is the 30fps Fidelity Pro mode. Insomniac says this is the visual option for those looking to “experiment” with some of the new ray-tracing features offered by the PS5 Pro, which can be tuned to each player’s preference. With Fidelity Pro, you may also notice that pedestrian and traffic density may be increased in a few locations in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, with hair detail also getting a bump. Update 1.004 also comes with a trio of new graphical toggles: RT Key Light Shadows, RT Reflections & Interiors, and RT Ambient Occlusion. All three tools are for those who like to tailor their gaming experiences right down to the finest details, though Insomniac warns that you’ll notice changes in certain portions of New York more than others. Expect many of the same PS5 Pro enhancements if you check out Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart update 1.005, too, including a default Performance Pro mode and Fidelity Pro mode. This patch also fixes “missing fur wetness” in some of the cinematics that take place on Corson V. The PS5 5 Pro won’t be out for another few weeks, but it’s still caused quite the stir among fans of Sony’s gaming endeavors since the company pulled back the curtain last month. The device was revealed to cost a steep $700, drawing criticism from those who believe the upgrade isn’t worth the price. We’ll know more about just how substantial the improvements are come launch next month. While we wait for the PS5 Pro to launch on November 7, you can check out our hands-on preview. You can also check out why we think Sony’s latest hardware release is too much for too little. Finally, you can see full patch notes for both Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart below. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Update 1.004.000 Patch Notes THE NEW GRAPHICS MODES PERFORMANCE PRO (Default for PlayStation 5 Pro) This mode targets a smooth 60 frames per second while retaining the image quality of the standard Fidelity mode through use of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). These new features can be tuned individually to reach higher intermediate frame rates, especially when using the “VRR” or “120 Hz Display Mode” options. Pedestrian and traffic density may be increased in some areas, and fine hair detail is increased. NEW GRAPHICAL TOGGLES RT Key Light Shadows : Off (Performance) / On (Fidelity default) Use ray-tracing to calculate sun shadows at mid- to far-distance, replacing cascaded shadow maps. This improvement is most impactful on city views. Only available in the “Fidelity Pro” graphics mode. RT Ambient Occlusion : Off (Performance) / Medium / High (Fidelity default) Use ray-tracing to compute additional ambient occlusion lighting information. The “Medium” setting uses that information to augment screen-space ambient occlusion. The “High” setting also adds a screen-space GI bounce for additional ambient lighting information.
