Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ lawyers plan to press Cassie about infidelity during cross-examination Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ lawyers plan to press Cassie about infidelity during cross-examination NEW YORK (AP) — Lawyers for Sean “Diddy” Combs say they’ll question R&B singer Cassie on Thursday about how infidelity fueled the combustible, nearly 11-year relationship between the two, as cross-examination of the prosecution’s star witness begins in Combs’ sex trafficking trial. It will be the third day on the stand for the 38-year-old Cassie after two days of questioning by prosecutors in a Manhattan courtroom. She testified on Wednesday that Combs ****** her when she broke up with him in 2018, after he locked her into a life of physical abuse by threatening to release degrading ******* videos of her. Prosecutors accuse Combs of exploiting his status as a powerful music executive and entrepreneur to violently force Cassie and other women to take part in ******* encounters. He is charged with crimes including racketeering and sex trafficking by force, fraud or coercion. Several other accusers are set to testify. Combs denies all of the allegations and has pleaded not guilty. His attorneys acknowledge he could be violent, but say the sex he and others engaged in was consensual and that nothing he did amounted to a criminal enterprise. Defense attorney Teny Geragos suggested on Wednesday during a discussion between lawyers and the judge that the game plan for Thursday was changing on the fly out of necessity. She didn’t get into particulars, but she told Judge Arun Subramanian that the questioning of Cassie by prosecutors “has gone much differently than I expected.” Later, Combs’ lawyer Marc Agnifilo told the judge that questioning Cassie about infidelities was important. “Everybody knows that we are going to bring up infidelities, that we’re going to want to bring up text messages of infidelities, and these text messages are often in colorful language,” he said. Early Thursday, the judge denied a request by defense lawyers to introduce text communications between Combs and Cassie that would include references to specific ******* acts. Defense lawyers have indicated that the cross examination of Cassie that will begin Thursday morning will likely be finished by the end of Friday’s court session. Cassie has held up well over two days of direct questioning by prosecutors. She cried several times but for the most part has remained composed and matter-of-fact as she talked about some of the most sensitive subjects imaginable, in a courtroom packed with family and friends of Combs, journalists and one row of spectator seats occupied by Cassie’s supporters. Cassie is in the third trimester of pregnancy with her third child. Cassie said Wednesday that Combs forced his way into her Los Angeles apartment and ****** her on the living room floor after she said she was ending their relationship. Cassie also said she didn’t feel she could refuse Combs’ demands for her to have “hundreds” of encounters with male sex workers — which he watched and controlled for hours and even days — because he would make her “look like a *****” if he made the videos public. “I feared for my career. The prosecutor asked for 55 days to find evidence before the case is brought to trial and the BBC understands this could be extended by a further seven months. Miss Culley’s lawyer, Ia Todua, said police wanted to establish where the drugs had come from and whether she was “planning to hand it over to someone”. Miss Culley was arrested at Tbilisi, Georgia, and charged with illegally buying, possessing and importing large quantities of narcotics including **********. Ms Todua, who has been appointed by the state to represent the teenager, said the prosecution estimated they would need two months to gather information. The lawyer said: “They said that they had to conduct a lot of investigative activities, so that they can collect evidence, establish where it was from [the narcotics] and was she planning to hand it over to someone. “That’s what they said they want to establish, and they also confiscated her phone.” She added that at the end of the hearing Miss Culley “told the court that she was pregnant”. Billionaire entrepreneur ******, 59, and his daughter Hannah, 18, were among the dead when the 56-metre (184 feet) Bayesian sank Aug. 19 last year. The boat trip was a celebration of ******’s acquittal in a fraud case in the U.S. in June. In an interim report on the disaster, Britain’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch said the boat was “vulnerable” to winds that were even lighter than the ones that tipped it over. According to Reuters, the crypto exchange projects a loss of $180 million to $400 million because of this cyberattack, which affected only a small segment of the company’s customer base. Customers who lost money also need not worry, as the company said it will reimburse them. The company received an email from the threat actor last May, saying that they had information on customer accounts and internal documents, and were asking for a $20 million ransom. But instead of paying off the hackers, Coinbase instead alerted law enforcement and established a reward of the same amount for information that will lead to the arrest of the attackers. “Instead of funding criminal activity, we have investigated the incident, reinforced our controls, and will reimburse customers impacted by this incident,” Coinbase said. It also added, “Remember, Coinbase will never ask for your password, 2FA codes, or for you to transfer assets to a specific or new address, account, vault, or wallet. We will never call or text you to give you a new seed phrase or wallet address to move your funds to. If you receive this call, hang up the phone. Coinbase will never ask you to contact an unknown number to reach us.” You may like Coinbase has since fired all the involved overseas customer support agents who stole the customer data. It also reiterated that “no passwords, private keys, or funds were exposed, and Coinbase Prime accounts are untouched.” The $400 million loss is also relatively small compared to the $328 billion worth of assets it holds and its more than $67 billion market capitalization. Despite not being widely used for day-to-day transactions, losses from blockchain hacks have reached over $2.2 billion in 2024. Earlier this year, ByBit, another cryptocurrency exchange platform, fell victim to a $1.5 billion hack — the largest crypto heist in recorded history — which the FBI suspects was the work of North Korean hackers. Kris Holland BBC News, East of England John Fairhall/BBC The final Debenhams stores shut on 15 May 2021 – marking an end to 200 years on the High Street It has been four years since former British High Street giant Debenhams closed its final stores. The brand still exists online, but what remains of the hundreds of bricks and mortar shops that were once dotted across the ***? The once-loved department chain traded from its physical shops for more than 200 years and was still opening new ones as recently as 2017. However, the big stores slowly suffered from falling profits and rising debt as more shoppers moved online – before the coronavirus lockdowns signalled the death knell to Debenhams and many other businesses. In its wake, town and city centres saw large parts of their High Streets become empty, but some stores have had a renaissance – including as bowling alleys and future lab spaces. BBC News looks at what happened next with Debenhams’ old shops across the East of England. From sitcom setting to student housing In the large market town of Northampton, a department store known as Adnitts – owned by the Adnitt Brothers – first opened on the Drapery in 1871. Eighty years later Debenhams purchased it and in the following years rebuilt the site, with its name eventually going above the door in 1973. During the golden age of High Street shopping in 1991, the store became known to millions of TV viewers during an episode of popular BBC sitcom Keeping Up Appearances. In the celebrated scene, Hyacinth Bucket and her hapless husband Richard were forced to rescue “Daddy” from the store – while he was dressed as an astronaut. Richard (Clive Swift), Daddy (George Webb) and Hyacinth (Patricia Routledge) were filmed inside Northampton’s Debenhams store Some 30 years later, on 8 May 2021, the town centre store shut at the height of the Covid pandemic, but the empty spot left behind was to be short-lived. Plans were soon lodged to demolish the building and create student accommodation in its place. The local council approved the idea and the work was completed last October. On nearby Abington Street, a similar fate awaits the former BHS and Marks & Spencer buildings, which later this year will be torn down to create more flats. A ‘blight’ on the town centre About 100 miles east in Ipswich, the former Debenhams store resided in a four-storey building in the heart of the town centre. The shop overlooked the Cornhill – a communal square that has received millions of pounds of investment in recent years, but the store that once boasted a games arcade on the top floor still sits empty and unloved, surrounded by metal fencing. The borough council has described the vacant Waterloo House building as a “blight” on the town centre. John Fairhall/BBC There is reported to have been interest in Ipswich’s former Debenhams store, but it still stands vacant The council claimed the building’s owner, Unex, had rejected several applications from “well-known retailers” to take over the site. Unex has been approached for comment, but previously said a pedestrianisation plan was needed to secure a decent deal. Harvey Bell/BBC Callum Kempton said Ipswich town centre had felt “emptier” without Debenhams Local shopper Callum Kempton told the BBC that the empty building had changed how he felt about his hometown. “It felt so desolate seeing it disappear because it was the cornerstone for people coming in, and it just makes the town feel a lot emptier by not being there,” he said. Debenhams opened in Bury St Edmunds in 2009 as the “flagship” store in the new Ark shopping centre Neglected Norfolk storesNeve Gordon-Farleigh/BBC Proposals have previously been drawn up to see Norwich’s old department store turned into student accommodation Graffiti-covered boards decorate the former Debenhams store in Norwich city centre. Opened in the 1950s, the store has remained empty since 2021 following the chain’s collapse. In similarities with Northampton, developers have drawn up plans that would see most of the building knocked down to create student accommodation, with 407 rooms and shops on the ground floor. However, Historic England has raised objections, saying the character of the city centre’s conservation area would be harmed, with it being close to buildings such as Norwich Castle. An application was lodged in January 2024, but a decision has yet to be made. The Debenhams store in King’s Lynn has remained vacant after it was closed during the first Covid-19 lockdown In the west of the county, King’s Lynn’s town centre store also remains vacant. It was shut during the first lockdown and never reopened. Amanda Arterton, who owned a furniture store in the town for more than 30 years, described it at the time as a “great loss”. In 2022, plans were revealed for the building that would see flats on the first and second floor and a retail space on the ground floor – but as the Lynn News recently reported, work has yet to take place. A lab space futurePioneer Group There are plans to build labs where Debenhams in Cambridge used to be In the centre of the university city of Cambridge, a more futuristic approach is on the horizon. Before it closed in 2021, the two-storey Debenhams was the biggest store in the city’s Grafton Centre. There are now plans to partly turn the shopping centre, which first opened in 1983, into office and lab space for the life science industries. Corstorphine and Wright, the company designing the scheme, said the Grafton had been “in decline” over recent years. “We identified areas that could be removed to allow for new development, including a vacant flagship Debenhams store and an underused entrance plaza,” it said. Grafton Centre Debenhams was once the biggest store in the Grafton Centre and was incorporated into its new design in 2017 (pictured), but further shop closures forced another revamp Opponents argued the plans would impact views across the city, with the campaign group Friends of St Matthew’s Piece describing the proposed buildings as “colossal new structures”. But the redevelopment was approved and work is now under way. An archaeological dig began at the site last month, which uncovered an unopened Victorian soft drink. Go-karting plan hits the brakes It was once hoped Colchester’s vacant shop would be turned into an entertainment complex Plans to breathe new life into Colchester’s former Debenhams have come and gone, with a developer pulling out of a vision to run go-karting, trampolining and mini golf inside. Towering over Culver Square in the heart of the Essex city, the shop was opened as one of its flagship retailers in 1987. But its derelict setting has become almost inescapable since May 2021, with three permanently closed entrances spanning across three busy shopping roads. It has been a big blow for an area vying to justify the prestige of its city status, granted in 2022, after also losing Marks and Spencer and Next. John Fairhall/BBC Colchester has suffered with a number of city centre shops shutting Colchester City Council previously said leisure would be at the heart of revitalising the city centre, which it stressed was “on the up”. But its ambitious vision for the former Debenhams has gone back to square one. The impact of the delay out of 2025 is substantial, and not just for hardware. Ampere Analysis told The Game Business that GTA 6’s delay has prompted the company to reduce its overall sales volume prediction for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2025 by 700,000 units. The company also forecast PlayStation and Xbox game sales to slide by 21 million units, with the total worldwide gaming industry missing out on $2.7 billion in revenue due to GTA 6’s delay. “The drop is quite significant,” Ampere’s Piers Harding-Rolls said. “You would expect people to spend on other things [instead]. But that kind of transfer will not be entirely. There will be a significant impact.” GTA 6 is expected to be a gigantic hit, with DFC previously predicting it would sell 40 million copies in its first year. But now that it’s delayed to 2026, DFC is projecting total North American software sales to decline 2% compared to 2024, with European software sales staying flat year-over-year. DFC was previously forecasting a “nice uptick” in percentage growth for 2025, due in part to the arrival of GTA 6 and the debut of the Switch 2. The new GTA 6 trailer was captured on a PS5 and featured multiple in-game references to PlayStation, prompting some to theorize that Sony may have a deal with Rockstar Games to promote the game. Any such financial benefit for Sony from a possible deal will seemingly now come in 2026, not 2025. Switch 2 may be the “most important product launch” of all time in gaming Nintendo’s new console remains on track for release on June 5, and DFC said it is “arguably the most important product launch in video game history.” Not only does DFC expect it to be the fastest-selling console system ever, but it has the potential to lift a video game industry that has been grappling with product delays, rising costs, and economic uncertainty,” the firm said. In Japan, DFC predicted that the local market will see a 25% increase in console software revenue in 2025 due in part to Nintendo “aggressively” pricing the console for the region. Nintendo previously announced a less expensive, Japan-only version of the Switch 2. While PS5 and Xbox Series X|S console sales may post negative growth numbers for 2024, forecasted growth in Japan thanks in part to the Switch 2 could help the overall global console market grow by 3% in 2025, DFC said. DFC also revised its unit-sales forecast for the Switch 2 in 2025, rising from 15 million to 16 million units. DFC said Nintendo could sell as many as 20 million units in 2025 “if manufacturing could meet demand,” but DFC said this may be “unlikely” due to Nintendo’s expected push to “take a conservative approach to inventory.” For its part, Nintendo has officially forecast Switch 2 sales of 15 million units by the end of March 2026, but DFC reminded everyone that Nintendo is known to be conservative in its forecast. As an example of this conservatism, DFC also reminds us that Nintendo forecast sales of 10 million units for the original Switch’s first fiscal year and went on to sell 15 million. “Based on that track record, the fact that Nintendo is forecasting a 15 million unit number gives us confidence that they will be able to ramp up supply and navigate tariff challenges,” DFC said. Regarding those tariff challenges, Nintendo recently warned of “tens of billions” in potential negative profit impact due to tariffs. However, Nintendo made this assumption based on the tariff situation in early April, and just recently, the US and China reached a deal at massively lower tariff rates. Looking further out DFC’s report also included further-out predictions for where the gaming industry may be headed over the next 4-5 years. DFC said demand remains strong for gaming, noting that when GTA 6 launches in May 2026, it “should help drive the industry to further heights.” From 2026-2029, DFC said it’s predicting that the video game industry sets “new hardware and software sales records.” “Meanwhile, the Switch 2, along with the growth of mobile PC game devices, is redefining the landscape of the video game industry. Nintendo can no longer be considered as playing in its own separate space. With the Switch 2, Nintendo is positioning itself as a central player in the broader console and PC gaming ecosystem,” DFC said. For the Switch 2 specifically, DFC said it’s forecasting sales of 100 million units or more by the end of 2029, which would make it the “leading console system by a wide margin.” “The next few years could see Nintendo for the first time becoming the primary partner for third-party game publishers,” DFC said. Local journalists said its corridors were crowded with casualties and that its mortuary was full. A spokesman for the Civil Defence later reported deadly strikes in the northern town of Jabalia, including an attack on a health clinic and prayer hall in Jabalia refugee camp that he said killed 13 people. There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military. But it has been intensifying its bombing of what it has said are ****** fighters and infrastructure ahead of a planned expansion of its ground offensive in Gaza. Gaming Performance on the Corsair Vengeance a7500 The Vengeance a7500 packs some pretty impressive hardware, starting with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor, which ranks as one of our best CPUs for gaming. That processor is backed by 32GB of DDR5-6400 memory, and is paired with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti graphics card. We don’t have a full assortment of Blackwell-equipped gaming desktops in our test database yet, but we do have the Alienware Area-51 (Core Ultra 9 285K, RTX 5090, and a far more expensive $5,759.99) for comparison. We also used the Vengeance i7600 (Core Ultra 7 265K, RTX 4070 Super) to compare Blackwell against a previous-generation GPU. With a sticker price well north of $2,000, I expected great performance from the Vengeance a7500 and wasn’t disappointed. I’ve been spending a lot of time recently playing Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and I played the game on my 240 Hz DQHD (5120 x 1440) gaming monitor. With all of the detail settings cranked up, I saw performance of around 100 to 120 frames per second (FPS). The Vengeance a7500 commanded 261 FPS at 1080p and 89 FPS at 4K resolution. For comparison, that performance bettered the Vengeance i7600 with an RTX 4070 Super by nearly 70 FPS and 26 FPS, respectively. The Area 51 didn’t quite match the Vengeance a7500 at 1080p, with only 244 FPS (likely due to the fact that the Ryzen 9800X3D is the stronger gaming CPU), but it obliterated it at 4K, delivering 169 FPS. The Cyberpunk 2077 benchmark (Medium settings) also showed strong performance from the Vengeance a7500. The Vengeance managed over 94 FPS at 1080p and nearly 30 FPS at 4K. Of course, the Area-51 with its RTX 5090 dominated the field, with 122 FPS at 1080p, nearly doubling the a7500’s 4K performance with 57 FPS. Far Cry 6 (Ultra settings) is a CPU-intensive game, and the Vengeance a7500 showed its gaming prowess over the two Intel-based competitors assembled. At 1080p, the Vengeance a7500 and its RTX 5070 Ti took a commanding lead with 197 FPS compared to 124 FPS for the Vengeance i7600 and 126 FPS for the Area-51. However, with the resolution cranked to 4K, the Area-51 managed a win with 119 FPS compared to 105 FPS for the Vengeance a7500. Red Dead Redemption 2 (Medium settings) has been a thorn in the side for many of the Blackwell-equipped gaming systems we’ve tested, especially at 1080p. While the Area-51 couldn’t complete the benchmark at 1080p when we reviewed it due to driver issues, the Vengeance a7500 achieved 174 FPS compared to just 107 FPS for the Vengeance i7600. Switching to 4K, the Area-51 flexed its mighty RTX 5090 muscle with 109 FPS compared to 67.47 FPS for the Vengeance a7500. Our final gaming benchmark is Borderlands 3 (Badass setting), another CPU-heavy game. This time around, the Vengeance a7500 hit 226.70 FPS at 1080p and 94.26 FPS at 4K. This put the system well ahead of the Vengeance i7600 (176 FPS and 67 FPS, respectively) but well shy of the Area-51, which managed 251 FPS at 1080p and 119 FPS at 4K. Metro Exodus remains our go-to for stress testing, and through a 15-loop marathon, the Vengeance a7500 averaged 145.96 FPS. The Ryzen 7 9800X3D averaged 5.04 GHz during the stress test, while the CPU measured 49.36 degrees Celsius. As for the RTX 5070 Ti, its maximum GPU clock was 2,735 MHz at an average temperature of 57.75 C. Productivity Performance on the Corsair Vengeance a7500 The Vengeance a7500 is a speedy performer in the productivity department, thanks to its Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor, 32GB of DDR5 memory, and a speedy 1TB PCIe 5.0 SSD. The Geekbench 6 synthetic CPU benchmark showed that the Vengeance a7500, with its Ryzen 7 9800X3D barely slid into first place with 3,247 on the single-core score. However, the two Intel-based rivals turned with more cores upped the heat on the multi-core benchmark, with the Area-51 leading the field with 21,786 compared to 18,124 for the Vengeance a7500. It managed 2,659.94 Mbps, compared to 1,585.18 Mbps for the Vengeance i7600 and 1,898.26 Mbps for the Area-51. Finally, our Handbrake benchmark saw this most significant setback for the Vengeance a7500 compared to the competition. We transcode a 4K video file to 1080p during this test, and the Vengeance a7500 completed the task in just over three minutes. However, the Vengeance i7600 and Area-51 finished in under two minutes. Software and Warranty on the Corsair Vengeance a7500 Corsair ships the Vengeance a7500 with Windows 11 Home and one of its own utilities: Corsair Diagnostics. The app, as its name implies, allows you to view system information, run stress tests, and perform checkup utilities on your desktop. The company’s oft-maligned iCUE app is not installed from the factory, although I chose to install it on my own. Once installed, iCUE gives you handy readouts of critical temperatures for your CPU and GPU. The app also allowed me to control the RGB effects on the Vengeance DDR5 modules, but not the case fans or the RGB element on the AIO water cooler. Bottom Line Corsair continues to build high-quality, high-performance gaming desktops. The Vengeance a7500 is not only a great-looking rig with its generous use of tempered glass and copious amounts of RGB fans, but it also has plenty of ventilation to keep the internals cool under load. Corsair’s use of a Ryzen 7 9800X3D proved to be the perfect match for the GeForce RTX 5070 Ti graphics cards. While the RTX 5070 Ti is obviously no match for the RTX 5090, we saw games exceed 60 FPS at 4K in all the games in our test suite, with the exception of Cyberpunk 2077. Given that this is a Corsair rig, it’s no surprise that the company tossed in some of its excellent hardware as well, including its branded 850W 80+ Gold PSU, Vengeance DDR5 memory, a super quick PCIe 5.0 SSD, a Nautilus liquid cooling system, and a two-year factory warranty. For security and defense company Axon Enterprise (NASDAQ:), Q1 earnings were exactly what it needed to take its 2025 returns from decent to delightful. The company’s results massively impressed markets, leading to shares rising over 14% afterwards. The broadly positive effects of the United States and China trade deal also boosted Axon shares. Combining these moves, Axon shares are now up approximately 22% in 2025 as of the May 13 close. Just prior to the earnings release, shares were up only 1% on the year, essentially equal to the return of Axon’s outperforming industrials sector at that time. Analysts raised their price targets on Axon after the results. May price target updates tracked by MarketBeat place an average price target of around $742 on the stock. However, this implies upside in Axon shares of only around 3% compared to its May 13 closing price. So, what are the prospects for Axon going forward? Despite being a massively profitable investment over the past several years, is the company’s valuation becoming stretched? AXON Earnings Hit on All Cylinders, Adds Strong Commentary Axon impressed with its results both on the top and bottom lines. The company saw sales grow by 31% to nearly $604 million, surpassing expectations of 27% growth. The firm’s adjusted earnings per share (EPS) also rose by just under 23% to $1.41, over double the 10% growth rate anticipated. Axon also upped the midpoint of its revenue guidance to $2.65 billion for the full year. This was slightly higher than Wall Street had hoped. The company also provided strong underlying news. It noted that it achieved record bookings in Q1 among international customers. International customers represent a significant growth opportunity for Axon, where it believes the total addressable market is $58 billion. The company also noted in its earnings call that its Draft One product now has over 30,000 active users, making it its fastest-adopted software product. This product creates a transcript of user interactions recorded on the company’s body cameras. Axon says police officers spend 40% of their time writing incident reports. Draft One can significantly reduce the time it takes to write these reports through its transcription. As of January 2024, the number of sworn police officers was down 5% from 2020 levels. Thus, there is likely a significant need for officers to be more efficient with their time, something Draft One can aid with. The Fort Collins Police Department said Draft One decreased the time officers spent writing incident reports by 67%. Defense and Border Spending Boosts Could Be Big for Axon Adding more good news around Axon is the fact that the United States Congress is boosting defense spending in a continuing resolution passed in March. It includes billions more in spending for the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This resolution funds the government through September 2025. For the federal government’s fiscal year 2026, starting in October 2025, President Trump wants a much larger boost in spending for DoD and DHS. The White House’s proposal calls for a 13% increase in DoD spending and a massive 65% increase in appropriations to DHS. Axon works with the U.S. Border Patrol, which is under DHS. The proposal would increase DHS spending by around $42 billion, with much of that spending going toward border security. This funding proposal faces many challenges before it can become a reality. However, Axon’s relationship with the U.S. government could grow significantly if it passes. Axon believes its translation technology could be greatly beneficial along the border. Built into Axon body cams, the tech translates foreign languages in real time, allowing for communication when a human translator is unavailable. Axon executive Patrick Smith shared that a Border Patrol commander asked him for this technology since officers deal with many languages at the border. Axon Outlook: Cautious Near Term, Bullish Long Term Despite all this great news, it is hard to argue that Axon shares are not looking stretched. The stock is now trading at a sky-high forward price-to-earnings multiple of 116. Due to this, it wouldn’t be surprising to start seeing downward pressure on Axon shares in the coming months. On issue after issue, the White House has been stopped by judges from carrying out Mr. Trump’s initiatives while they are litigated in court, including his ability to withhold funds from schools with diversity programs, to relocate transgender women in federal prisons and to remove deportation protections from hundreds of thousands of Venezuelan migrants. On Thursday, the Supreme Court will take up one such case, with potentially major implications for the power of the judicial branch. The dispute stems from an executive order signed by Mr. Trump on the first day of his second term that ended the practice of granting citizenship to all children born in the United States. The policy was blocked almost immediately by federal judges who ruled that it was unconstitutional. The debate over whether such freezes are legal has simmered for years, as district court judges have issued orders blocking the actions of presidents from both parties. But Mr. Trump has expressed particular outrage about them since he returned to office. Some of the justices have also been critical of nationwide injunctions. A decision that limits nationwide injunctions could dramatically reshape how federal courts handle challenges to Mr. Trump’s policies, curbing the power of federal judges to swiftly block policies and boosting executive power. Groups opposing Mr. Trump’s actions would most likely have to bring many individual claims, or pursue other legal pathways, such as class action lawsuits. Birthright citizenship, or the practice of granting citizenship to people born in the United States to parents who are not citizens, has long been considered a tenet of immigration law. The 14th Amendment, ratified after the Civil War, declared that “all persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside.” In 1898, the Supreme Court affirmed that right in a landmark case, United States v. Wong Kim Ark. For more than a century, courts have upheld that constitutional interpretation. Mr. Trump’s executive order drew immediate legal challenges from 22 Democratic-led states, and from immigrant advocacy groups and several pregnant women who contested the order, saying they feared their children would be denied U.S. citizenship. Federal judges in three states quickly paused the policy while court challenges continued. On March 13, the Trump administration asked the justices to step in and lift the court-ordered blocks, which most likely would have allowed the policy to go into effect in the states that had not sued. More than a month later, on April 17, the justices announced that they would schedule an oral argument to consider the legality of the nationwide injunction. The Supreme Court has never ruled directly on the issue before, in part because judges have used nationwide injunctions far more frequently in recent years. Some justices have signaled opposition to their use. In a 2020 decision, Justice Neil M. Gorsuch criticized injunctions of “‘nationwide,’ ‘universal’ or ‘cosmic’ scope,” writing that such “patently unworkable” rulings were “sowing chaos.” Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. has also criticized nationwide blocks. In a legal brief, the immigrant groups challenging the birthright order argued that the justices do not need to issue such a ruling now, because “case-specific considerations” support such nationwide freezes. They cite the judiciary’s power under Article III of the Constitution to issue such rulings. And they argue that if judges had been barred from making rulings that applied to parties not directly involved in litigation, courts could not have outlawed school segregation or racial gerrymandering. Thursday’s argument consolidates three challenges to the Trump executive order imposed by federal courts in Maryland, Massachusetts and Washington State. Judges in each state have been skeptical of Mr. Trump’s attempt to end birthright citizenship. At a hearing in Seattle, Judge John C. Coughenour, a Ronald Reagan appointee, said: “I’ve been on the bench for over four decades. I can’t remember another case where the question presented is as clear as this one. This is a blatantly unconstitutional order.” In their emergency application to the justices, Trump administration lawyers argued that any order issued by the those trial judges should have only applied to parties directly involved in the court challenges. Sarah M. Harris, the acting solicitor general at the time, called the government’s request a “modest” one, an effort to limit the freeze on the policy to “parties actually within the courts’ power.” Immigrant groups and leaders of the 22 Democratic-led states argued that the birthright citizenship case showed why nationwide injunctions were a necessary tool. “There is nothing ‘modest’ about the government’s request for emergency relief in this case,” two immigrants’ rights groups — CASA Inc. and the Asylum Seeker Advocacy Project — argued in their own filing. Prosecutors allege Combs used his fame and fortune to orchestrate an empire of exploitation, coercing women into abusive sex parties. His lawyers argue that all the ******* acts were consensual, and although he could be violent, he never veered into sex trafficking and racketeering. Defense attorney Teny Geragos suggested yesterday during a discussion between lawyers and the judge that the gameplan for today was changing on the fly out of necessity. She didn’t get into particulars but she told Judge Arun Subramanian that the questioning of Cassie by prosecutors over two days “has gone much differently than I expected.” She added: “So we are kind of changing our strategy.” Agnifilo later told the judge that questioning Cassie about infidelities is important. “Everybody knows that we are going to bring up infidelities, that we’re going to want to bring up text messages of infidelities, and these text messages are often in colorful language,” he said.
