Trump hails Qatari pledge to invest $16b in US air base Trump hails Qatari pledge to invest $16b in US air base Qatar will invest $US10 billion ($A16 billion) in coming years in the Al Udeid Air Base southwest of its capital Doha, the largest US military facility in the Middle East. In a speech to US troops at the base during his tour of the Gulf, US President Donald Trump also said defence purchases signed by Qatar on Wednesday were worth $US42 billion. Trump’s motorcade had pulled up next to a big hangar at the base after a drive along closed roads and under dusty skies, through a flat desert landscape. Two bright red Tesla Cybertrucks that belong to Qatar’s internal security forces could be seen in the parade of vehicles, according to a shared pool report by AFP news agency. Trump then headed to the United Arab Emirates, whose leaders are seeking US help to make the wealthy Gulf nation a global leader in artificial intelligence. The US has a preliminary agreement with the UAE to allow it to import 500,000 of Nvidia’s most advanced AI chips a year, starting in 2025, Reuters reported on Wednesday. The deal would boost the UAE’s construction of data centres vital to developing artificial intelligence models. But the agreement has provoked national security concerns among sectors of the US government, and the terms could change, sources said. A string of business agreements has been inked during Trump’s four-day swing through the Gulf region, including a deal for Qatar Airways to purchase up to 210 Boeing wide-body jets, a $US600 billion commitment from Saudi Arabia to invest in the US and $US142 billion in US arms sales to the kingdom. The trip has also brought a flurry of diplomacy. Trump made a surprise announcement on Tuesday that the US would remove longstanding sanctions on Syria and subsequently met Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa. He urged Sharaa to establish ties with Syria’s longtime foe Israel. In Abu Dhabi Trump will meet UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and other leaders. AI is likely to be a focus of the final leg of Trump’s trip. Former US President Joe Biden’s administration had imposed strict oversight of exports of US AI chips to the Middle East and other regions. Among the Biden administration’s fears were that the prized semiconductors would be diverted to China and buttress Beijing’s military strength. Trump has made improving ties with some Gulf countries a key goal of his administration. If all the proposed chip deals in Gulf states, and the UAE in particular, come together, the region would become a third power centre in global AI competition after the United States and China. Trump had dangled the possibility of making a side trip to Turkey to join Russia-Ukraine talks before returning to Washington, but a US official said on Wednesday that the president would not make that stop. ‘Orthorexia’ Is More And More Common. Here’s What You Should Know About It. ‘Orthorexia’ Is More And More Common. Here’s What You Should Know About It. While eating a nutritious diet is a good thing, it can cross a line and become a disruption to your daily life. draganab via Getty Images Between fad diets, the protein-ification of nearly everything and new wearable technology that tracks all kinds of biometrics, it’s easy to get swept up in the health-obsession craze. Plus, with all of the information online and on social media, it can be hard to know what you need and don’t need when it comes to your health, especially nutrition. There are videos all over social media in which people refer to certain foods as “bad” or containing “fake ingredients,” which only fuel a societal infatuation with “eating healthy.” While there is nothing wrong with eating a healthy diet — it’s a great way to bolster your well-being — there is a line that healthy eating can cross. Too much of a focus on it can turn into something known as orthorexia, a condition that’s becoming more common in society, and some research says that’s in large part because of pressure from social media. You won’t find orthorexia in the DSM-5, which is the official handbook for mental health diagnoses, but two dietitians told HuffPost they expect it to become an official diagnosis eventually. “It’s subclinical disordered eating, so it’s not something that has a clinical diagnosis code, but it’s widely recognized in the disordered eating community,” said Beth Auguste, a maternal wellness dietitian in Philadelphia. ″[Orthorexia] can be generally categorized as a preoccupation with healthy eating and a fixation on the purity of food,” added Auguste. “It’s an obsession with what someone perceives as the proper way of eating, or the healthy way of eating,” added Beth Heise, a registered dietitian with OnPoint Nutrition. Since lots of people enjoy eating healthy foods or do so to keep certain health markers like cholesterol and blood sugar in control, it can be hard to know what is just a healthy diet and what is dangerous. “It’s so hard to spot that even professionals can have trouble spotting it — they kind of question, like, is this person just really healthy, or is [it] bordering on a disorder?” Auguste noted. Below, Auguste and Heise share the signs that you may be crossing into orthorexia territory and what to do if you’re concerned about your eating habits. You have extreme food restrictions (that aren’t related to an allergy or suggestion from a doctor). ″[Orthorexia] can show up some of the same ways that anorexia shows up, where it can be restricting — not eating certain food groups, having a lot of anxiety if you are not having full control over the food that you’re eating and the source that it comes from,” Auguste said. You may find yourself creating rigid rules regarding your food intake, Heise added. Like, maybe you tell yourself you can only eat brown rice and can never make exceptions for white rice. “It winds up becoming less about healthy eating, which is usually what it starts out as, and more about an unhealthy obsession with food purity or ‘clean eating,’ or ‘proper eating,’” Heise said. It messes with your social life. “When it crosses the line is when it starts to interfere with your activities of daily living,” Auguste said. If your stress about food interferes with your social engagements, like you turn down plans because you aren’t sure of the food situation, it could be cause for concern. “When it impacts your ability to live socially in the world, comfortably, then it’s a problem that you should address,” Auguste added. “It winds up being less about the average person concerned about healthy food, and more just really obsessing about it where it’s almost your personality,” Heise said. Orthorexia, or a preoccupation with healthy eating, is becoming more common in society. skynesher via Getty Images You spend lots of time analyzing ingredient lists. It’s normal to check the ingredient lists and nutrition labels on food from time to time, especially if you have an allergy or a specific nutrition goal you’re trying to hit. But, for someone with orthorexia, they may find that they’re “compulsively, all the time, analyzing all the ingredients,” Heise said. This may turn into hours and hours spent meal planning or researching the nutrition of every ingredient that’s going into your food, she noted. When you break your food rules, you feel anxious or guilty. “I think the line comes when you start to feel like you’re thinking about [healthy eating] all the time,” Heise said. “If you feel like you have anxiety … you’re nervous about eating something … and you feel like that more often than not, then that could be a sign that maybe you’re thinking about it too much,” she said. The same goes for if you feel guilty after breaking any of your food rules, Heise added. Auguste added that if your thoughts about food are disrupting your mental health at all, you should consider talking to someone. Auguste also said if it interferes with your physical health, it’s absolutely a red flag. Here’s what to do if this sounds like you. With support from either a dietitian or mental health professional, you can determine whether your healthy eating is simply that — or something more. “It’s really important to talk to somebody like a dietitian who specializes in disordered eating, a therapist who specializes in it, who can help you figure out [if this is a problem for you],” Auguste said. Dietitians generally take insurance, noted Auguste, and they can help you make sure you’re on the right track with your eating, whether or not you have specific concerns. “You can definitely recover from orthorexia if you have the right support,” said Heise, “so, as soon as you feel those feelings, address it as early as possible so that it doesn’t turn into something that rules your life.” Healthy eating is a lifelong process and isn’t meant to be perfect. When it comes to what you eat, your nutrition needs likely differ from your partner’s, your neighbor’s and your favorite social media influencer’s. So, don’t put too much stock in social media nutrition trends or what diet a friend is raving about, Heise said. Instead of obsessing over the latest food trend, focus on realistic goals — “so, not focusing on whether or not a food is clean, but focusing on whether or not you have variety in your meals,” Heise said. “Are you getting a variety of different foods? Are you getting a variety of different nutrients? Because that’s where true nutrition comes in.” Auguste said it’s important to let go of all-or-nothing thinking when it comes to eating, which includes rules around following one specific diet or a rigid plan to lose weight. “I have so many patients that do that, and then it’s not sustainable to be 100% all of the time,” Auguste added. Then, when they fall off of the diet, they feel like a failure and give up, she noted. “I feel like that is a downside for somebody with orthorexia, is that you are afraid of letting go of the 100%, and you’re afraid that if you let go, that you fall back into that nothing,” Auguste said. It’s important to find the middle ground and remind yourself that you don’t have to be perfect, added Auguste. “You can say to yourself, ‘I usually eat healthy.’ You don’t have to say, ‘I always eat healthy,’” she said. When you use “always” language, you “introduce that concept of failure and judging yourself,” Auguste noted. And it’s perfectly OK, and not a failure, to have that salty snack or sweet treat. “The more practice you can get of letting yourself find the middle, where you’re not ‘always,’ you’re just ‘usually’ doing something, I think the better,” Auguste said. As you work on all of this, have compassion for yourself. Society does not make it easy to be forgiving about food choices. “Eating and healthy eating in general, is just a lifelong journey. It’s not really a set of rules and a one-and-done; it’s something that you engage in throughout your lifetime,” Heise said. Your diet needs may change as you age, as might your food preferences. “A few choices here and there that you feel like maybe weren’t as great are not going to make that big of an impact. It’s really more focusing on getting you what you need throughout your life,” Heise said. If you’re struggling with an eating disorder, call or text 988 or chat 988lifeline.org for support. 2-Year-Old Report Reveals Why Bloodborne Won’t Ever Be On Xbox 2-Year-Old Report Reveals Why Bloodborne Won’t Ever Be On Xbox Ask someone about their favorite FromSoftware game, and the answer is most likely to be a Soulsborne released in the past 15 years (yeah, they have made other games too). There’s no denying that the developer, with the direction of Hidetaka Miyazaki, has completely revolutionized the genre, and has no plans of ending its hot streak. Unfortunately, for Xbox gamers out there, one of the most iconic FromSoftware soulsborne games, Bloodborne, is out of reach. Why is that the case, you might wonder? Well, according to Microsoft, it’s all because Sony has been involved in some behind-the-scenes shenanigans with FromSoftware. The exact reason why Bloodborne is still a PlayStation exclusive We all know about Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard in 2023. It wasn’t a smooth ride for the tech giant as it ignited an outright war between Sony and Microsoft. This was all due to Sony lobbying internationally to block Microsoft’s purchase of Activision -Blizzard. Microsoft didn’t take this move lightly, and in response to the CMA’s thoughts on the Activision Blizzard merger, stated that Sony has been actively blocking some big games from Xbox. As reported by DenOfGreek, in the 111-page response, Microsoft explained that Sony has more exclusives compared to Microsoft, and some of them “are better quality”. Microsoft went as far as to list some examples of third-party games tied to the Sony console. This included the likes of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Final Fantasy 16, Silent Hill 2 Remake, and most crucially, Bloodborne. While the duration for every game’s exclusivity with PlayStation wasn’t provided, Microsoft’s statement suggests that it has no end. If you take the case of Bloodborne, it’s been out for nearly a decade at this point, and still hasn’t been ported over to Xbox. PlayStation doesn’t want to end console wars. (Image via Sony) It’s seriously disappointing to see that Miyazaki’s magnum opus, Bloodborne, is being kept away from Xbox players due to this exclusivity deal. It’s a title that has millions of fans across the world. It’s not just that the game is not being released on Xbox, as it’s not receiving a much-anticipated PC port either. Let’s not forget that a few months ago, Sony acquired a 10% stake in FromSoftware‘s parent company, Kadokawa, and now stands as the largest shareholder. There’s a chance that it could use its influence to restrict future FromSoftware games from ever hitting Xbox consoles. Xbox doesn’t need Bloodborne anymore Xbox has built its library of incredible games. (Image via Microsoft) Microsoft exposed Sony’s exclusivity shenanigans two years ago, and since then, it has been actively working on its own exclusives, and Xbox Game Pass in particular, to level up the playing field. Team Green doesn’t need FromSoftware titles anymore, as it has its own blockbuster games. 2025 has proven to be an incredible year so far. Microsoft started it off by bringing hits such as Avowed and Atomfall. However, it took things to the next level in April by dropping day-one titles on Game Pass, such as The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Seriously, you won’t regret a single second of playing these. That’s not the end of the road for Xbox either. The highly anticipated Doom: The Dark Ages has also finally hit the Game Pass today. Microsoft is also planning to hold a big showcase event for its console brand that will bring us tons of more exciting announcements. With that said, do you think Sony should allow Bloodborne to be ported to Xbox? Let us know in the comments below. Helldivers 2 Hits Highest Player Count of 2025 Following Illuminate Invasion Update Helldivers 2 Hits Highest Player Count of 2025 Following Illuminate Invasion Update Helldivers 2 has been following a steady fall in player count after its initial release. More so after the account linking shenanigan, which caused more than half the players to quit the title. That was quite a situation. Despite such a dire situation, the game is now observing a rise in player count. On May 15, 2025, Helldivers 2 observed the highest player count for this year. The numbers aren’t as huge compared to their initial phase, but an improvement nonetheless. Looks like divers only needed a good update to make a return and fight for Super Earth. Helldiver 2 reaches the highest player count of 2025, quite a comeback We’re going up again! | Credit: Arrowhead Game Studios The Helldivers 2 player count was in deep waters even last month. There was a rise in players after the drop of Omens of Tyranny last year, but it soon capsized as well. By April 2025, the player count dropped to approximately 50k on Steam alone. Compared to the all-time peak, which is approximately 450k, it was quite surprising. However, after the release of the Galactic Invasion event, the player count improved massively. It saw approximately 90k players within 24 hours after the release (source: SteamDB). The Omens of Tyranny release saw around 150k players on release, so if the true invasion of Illuminate begins, it may see a rise in players. But seeing the game push itself back again does rekindle hope. The developers are working hard to deliver products that players will enjoy. Yes, there are a lot of microtransactions, but which live-service game doesn’t have them? There’s a way Arrowhead can see a massive rise in players, and that is by making it free-to-play like Destiny 2. They can capitalize on the microtransactions by welcoming more players. As of 2025, everyone prefers to play free games, which is apparent. Look at the success of Marvel Rivals, Destiny 2, and others! Even Rainbow Six Siege is going free-to-play. What’s new with the May update? Arrowhead Game Studios released their newest update for Helldivers 2 and brought the Galactic Emergency event. It turns out Illuminate has begun its invasion on Super Earth to try to conquer it. Bringing all patriots together to fight for their homeland. And players did it, but there’s more awaiting. This update has brought a lot of new stuff, like new enemies, weapon customization, and more. Moreover, there’s also a new Masters of Ceremony Warbond, which is great for bringing players for the invasion. This is why players have taken an interest in the game, which they once left. Three new enemy types have been added to Helldivers 2 with the latest update. Stringray jetfighters, Crescent Overseer, and Fleshmob. All of them are working together to spread their reign on Super Earth. More might be coming soon, as players have spotted larger ships. The threat won’t stop, huh? Similar to Call of Duty Mastery skins, Helldivers 2 added new weapon patterns to improve the customization. So players can express themselves not only through armors but also, their firearms. It is possible that more customization options will be available down the line. But there are only superficial changes. What about weapon adjustments? Weapon customization is another thing that was missing from the game. Players can customize most of their primary weapons by leveling up. It won’t be easy, as players will have to complete missions to unlock the attachments. Are you excited to join other divers in Helldivers 2‘s latest update? What is your favorite addition with the new update? Tell us in the comments below. Joe Rogan Stuns With Skepticism of Big Bang, Proclamation About Jesus’ Resurrection Joe Rogan Stuns With Skepticism of Big Bang, Proclamation About Jesus’ Resurrection Popular podcaster Joe Rogan delivered shocking statements on a recent episode of his show, casting doubt on the Big Bang theory and seemingly defending the plausibility of Jesus’ resurrection. “It’s funny, because people will be incredulous about the resurrection of Jesus Christ, but yet, they’re convinced that the entire universe was smaller than a head of a pin and that for no reason that anyone has adequately explained to me, instantaneously became everything? OK,” Rogan, believed by many at minimum to be an agnostic, said during a conversation with comedy podcaster Cody Tucker on “The Joe Rogan Experience.” Ultimately, Rogan said he finds the Big Bang theory — the scientific explanation of how the universe began as a tiny, hot, dense point and rapidly expanded and then cooled over billions of years, and is still actively expanding — tough to adopt. He also wondered if humans, based on the notion that we are born and die, might place “biological limitations” on the universe and our understanding of existence. “Wouldn’t it be crazy if there wasn’t something at one point in time?” Rogan continued. “That seems even crazier than there has always been something. … There couldn’t be nothing, and then, all of a sudden, everything.” According to The Christian Post, Rogan also quoted late ethnobotanist Terence McKenna who, according to biologist Rupert Sheldrak’s 2009 book, “Morphic Resonance: The Nature of Formative Causation,” essentially said belief in the Big Bang requires faith of its own. The quote in question centered on modern science’s principle of proclaiming, “Give us one free miracle and we’ll explain the rest.” That miracle, of course, centers on the appearance of energy and mass in the first place. Critics of a theological worldview will often say, “Well, who created God, then?” But this same question persists even for those who embrace the Big Bang and believe something essentially emerged without any source or Creator to spark the universe’s expansion. “That’s McKenna’s great line … the difference between science and religion is that science only asks you for one miracle — the Big Bang,” Rogan said. “I’m sticking with Jesus on that one. Jesus makes more sense. People have come back to life.” The conversation did move in other directions as well, with Rogan at one point posing the question, “Is God the universe?” In the end, though, Rogan seemed to conclude the aforementioned line that “Jesus makes more sense.” A portion of the conversation is here [caution: strong language]. Kyrgios was not expected to head to Roland Garros later this month, having last played there in a second-round loss in 2017. But he said he decided to go to Paris with Thompson’s regular doubles partner Max Purcell serving a doping ban. “The French Open was never really on the cards,” Kyrgios told The Canberra Times. “But after the stuff with Max Purcell, Jordan was looking for a partner and he asked me if I wanted to play. “We’ve played at the French Open before, so it’ll be good to get out there and play with another fellow Aussie and have a bit of fun.” The French Open begins on May 25. One of Trump’s newly welcomed Afrikaner ‘refugees’ tweeted that Jews are ‘dangerous and untrustworthy’ One of Trump’s newly welcomed Afrikaner ‘refugees’ tweeted that Jews are ‘dangerous and untrustworthy’ A South African man, who was recently granted residency in the U.S., posted a series of antisemitic tweets, including that Jews were “dangerous and untrustworthy”, according to multiple media reports. Charl Kleinhaus, 46, from Limpopo, South Africa, landed in Washington on a chartered jet on Monday with his daughter, son, and grandson. They plan to resettle in Buffalo, New York. He arrived with a group of 59 white South Africans, who were granted asylum in the U.S., after Trump deemed them victims of racial discrimination in their home nation. “We just packed our bags and left,” Mr. Kleinhaus said after landing, adding that it was necessary for “safety reasons,” reported The New York Times. On Monday, Trump was asked by reporters why the Afrikaners were given priority refugee status over other victims fleeing war or famine in Africa. The President simply said Afrikaners were being killed, without providing any evidence. “It’s a genocide that’s taking place,” he said at the White House, adding that there was no favourability based on the colour of their skin, “[it] makes no difference to me,” he added. Elon Musk, part of Trump’s inner circle, has peddled similar claims after he retweeted an aerial video showing roadside graves, which claimed each cross represented a murdered white farmer in South Africa. “So many crosses,” Musk wrote above the video on X Tuesday. Trump granted the asylum flight despite there being no declaration of an active ‘genocide’ against white South Africans in the nation (AFP/Getty) Kleinhaus, too, is an avid poster on X and often tweets or retweets far-right and pro-Trump content. In a now-deleted tweet, posted in April 2023, and screenshotted by The Bulwark, the 46-year-old wrote: “Jews are untrustworthy and a dangerous group they are not Gods chosen like to believe they are. Where is the Temple that must be their concern leave is alone we all believe in the God of Abraham, Moses and Jacob! I almost said something ugly…” The comment was in response to a video of Christians tussling with Israeli police on the way to the Church of the Nativity, reported conservative news outlet The Bulwark. In tweets that are still available on his account, Kleinhaus posted a link to a clip showing a scuffle between the Israeli military and Christians while writing: “Jews attacking Christians !” on X, just five days after the October 7 attacks. On the day of the deadly attack, Kleinhaus initially responded to the news by posting a link to an Al Jazeera video, taken a few days earlier, of what appeared to be Orthodox Israelis spitting on Christians, writing “Jews spitting on Christians!” He also posted that “Israel is a terrorist state” on Facebook, along with a link to another video showing clashes that same day, reported The Bulwark. Trump’s ally Musk has peddled claims of a “white genocide” in his home nation on X (EPA) Several X users were quick to challenge Kleinhaus on X, accusing him of retweeting several antisemitic posts on the social media platform. On Wednesday, the 46-year-old attempted to defend himself by claiming that he “copy and pasted someone’s post rather than retweeting it” as he had got into a spat with someone, adding: “I am myself from jewish descendants keep searching you will find the original.” Kleinhaus confirmed that the X account belonged to him to The Bulwark. According to the U.S. embassy in South Africa, to be eligible for the resettlement scheme in the U.S., someone must be of South African nationality, an Afrikaner or from a racial *********, and able to cite an incident of past persecution or fear of persecution in the future. South Africa maintains there is no evidence of persecution or a “white genocide”, despite claims from Musk, on X. The Independent contacted Kleinhaus and the Department of Homeland Security for comment. New Kingdom Hearts 4 Screenshots Make It Seem Like This Character Will Now Be Playable New Kingdom Hearts 4 Screenshots Make It Seem Like This Character Will Now Be Playable Following the cancellation of Kingdom Hearts Missing Link, the team behind the critically acclaimed series has taken to X (formerly Twitter) to share new images of the next mainline entry in the franchise: Kingdom Hearts IV. Presented as a collage and without any context, it’s hard to interpret too much from the images. However, the forth image in the set seems to indicate that none other than King Mickey himself will be a playable character in the game’s next chapter. To our Kingdom Hearts community, We’re currently working hard on Kingdom Hearts IV and will continue pouring ourselves into the game’s development. We’re dedicated to making this an experience that lives up to your expectations! [1/2] pic.twitter.com/4lbg6l2ErZ — KINGDOM HEARTS (@KINGDOMHEARTS) May 15, 2025 Aside from the picture our chandelier-swinging monarch, the folks at Square Enix didn’t give us much to mull over with these images. That said, the sheer look of the game–particularly in images four, six, and seven–has left us even more eager to get our hands on it. Kingdom Hearts IV does not currently have a release window, though Square Enix has assured fans that it is “currently working hard” on the title. Following Missing Link’s cancellation, it is now the next Kingdom Hearts title scheduled to release. Prior to its cancelation, Missing Link was meant to help ease the waiting ******* between 2019’s Kingdom Hearts III and the next chapter of Sora’s story. The mobile game was described as a “GPS-based action RPG,” and was said to connect to the events of Kingdom Hearts IV. As for why Square Enix cancelled the project, the team offered the following explanation: “Although we worked hard on developing and adjusting the game in the hope that it would be enjoyed by lots of players, we determined that it would be difficult for us to offer a service that players would find satisfactory over a long ******* of time, leading us to the decision to cancel development.” With Summer Game Fest 2025 just around the corner, here’s hoping we hear a bit more about what the Kingdom Hearts team has cooking soon. Trump tells Apple CEO Tim Cook ‘I don’t want you building in India,’ says Apple will increase U.S. manufacturing Trump tells Apple CEO Tim Cook ‘I don’t want you building in India,’ says Apple will increase U.S. manufacturing President Donald Trump says he has told Tim Cook to stop building plants in India, calling for more domestic manufacturing of Apple products such as iPhones. As reported by CNBC, he says that Apple plans to increase its production in the United States as a result of his comments. Trump made the remarks at a business event in Doha, Qatar, where he revealed he had spoken to Cook about the issue. When asked broadly about U.S. trade relations with India, he said, “I had a little problem with Tim Cook yesterday,” referencing a meeting between the two. “I said to him, ‘My friend, I treated you very good. You’re coming here with $500 billion, but now I hear you’re building all over India. I don’t want you building in India’.” Trump’s comments refer to Apple’s commitment to invest $500 billion in U.S. manufacturing over the next four years. It plans to expand its facilities in Michigan, Texas, California, Arizona, Nevada, Iowa, Oregon, North Carolina, and Washington, building a new factory in Texas and investing in TSMC’s Fab 21 facility in Arizona, which started mass producing Apple chips in January. You may like “I said to Tim, I said, ‘Tim look, we treated you really good, we put up with all the plants that you build in China for years… We’re not interested in you building in India, India can take care of themselves … we want you to build here’,” President Trump continued. As a result, the president says Apple is “upping their production in the United States,” but did not elaborate on whether this is simply a reflection of Apple’s previous efforts or an increased commitment. The news comes as Apple and other tech giants try to pry themselves free of over-reliance on China for manufacturing, a weakness gravely exposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Apple makes nearly all of its iPhones in China. While estimates vary, the number reported ranges between 80 and 90%. Apple’s annual iPhone output from India is only around 10-20%, again depending on whose figures you use. Apple has onshored swathes of manufacturing in the country, driven by generous tariffs, with manufacturing partners Foxconn and Pegatron now operating in the region alongside *****, which acquired Wistron in the region. Get Tom’s Hardware’s best news and in-depth reviews, straight to your inbox. Recent analyst estimates indicate an iPhone made in the US would increase labor costs alone by 25%, while Wedbush’s Dan Ives touted that an iPhone made in America could cost some $3,500. Apple is also battling tariff uncertainty, recently shipping five extra planeloads of iPhones from India in order to beat import duties introduced by Washington. Trump’s latest comments will likely disrupt Apple’s plans to withdraw more manufacturing from China, and could indicate the administration has a keen interest in ensuring that decoupling manufacturing from China goes hand in hand with more production on U.S. shores. Ben & Jerry’s co-founder Ben Cohen arrested after Senate Gaza protest Ben & Jerry’s co-founder Ben Cohen arrested after Senate Gaza protest Ben Cohen, the co-founder of Ben & Jerry’s, was arrested during a protest in the US Senate over military aid to Israel and humanitarian conditions in Gaza. Protesters disrupted the hearing on Wednesday while Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr was testifying. Mr Cohen was charged with a misdemeanour offence, while another six demonstrators were also arrested and face a number of more serious charges, US Capitol Police told BBC News. A video shared on social media showed Mr Cohen being escorted from the building by police with his hands tied behind his back. “Congress kills poor kids in Gaza by buying bombs, and pays for it by kicking kids off Medicaid in the US,” he said in a video after someone asked why he was “getting arrested”. A police spokesperson said that Mr Cohen was charged with crowding, obstructing or incommoding – a misdemeanour offence often used in civil disobedience cases in the US capital. Six other demonstrators were also arrested at the hearing and face charges including assaulting a police officer and/or resisting arrest. Ben & Jerry’s has long been known for taking a public stance on social and political issues since it was founded in 1978 by Mr Cohen and Jerry Greenfield. It has often backed campaigns on issues like LGBTQ+ rights and climate change. Ben & Jerry’s was bought by the multinational consumers goods giant Unilever in 2000. The merger agreement between the two companies created an independent board tasked with protecting Ben & Jerry’s values and mission. But Unilever and Ben & Jerry’s have been at loggerheads for a while. Their relationship soured in 2021 when Ben & Jerry’s announced it was halting sales in the West Bank. The two companies are currently locked in a legal battle. In response to a request for comment, a spokesperson for Unilever told BBC News: “Ben Cohen takes stances as an activist citizen on issues he finds personally important. “These actions are on his own as an individual and not on behalf of Ben & Jerry’s or Unilever.” In March, Ben & Jerry’s filed a legal case accusing Unilever of sacking chief executive David Stever over disagreements over the brand’s political campaigns. At the time a Unilever spokesperson said it was “disappointed that the confidentiality of an employee career conversation has been made public”. The dispute escalated over the last year as Ben & Jerry’s advocated for a ceasefire in Gaza. Liz Stead had a criminal record for being a lesbian but nobody told her Liz Stead had a criminal record for being a lesbian but nobody told her Josh Parry LGBT & Identity Reporter Liz Stead Liz says she was “astonished” to learn of her criminal record A woman who unknowingly had a criminal record for 56 years for being a lesbian in the military is encouraging more women to apply to a government pardons scheme. Liz Stead, 78, was thrown out of the RAF in 1969 when bosses discovered a love letter from her then-girlfriend. More than 50 years later Liz discovered she was also given a criminal conviction for “perceived same-sex ******* activity” and had unknowingly lived with a criminal record for most of her adult life. She is one of 40 people in England and Wales who have had convictions of this nature overturned since 2023, when the government’s Disregards and Pardons Scheme was expanded to include women for the first time. Liz, from Chichester, West Sussex, first learned of her criminal record in December last year, when applying for a different scheme, which awards financial redress to veterans who were sacked during a ban on homosexuality in the armed forces which was lifted in the year 2000. In emails seen by the BBC, her application for the payment was initially denied because of the conviction, and she was advised to apply for it to be pardoned by the Home Office. She applied to have the application fast-tracked due to ill health – and says she was “astonished” to learn of the charges. She now wonders what unknown impact it has had on her life. “I can think of one job where it might have been the reason I didn’t get it. I’ve worked in local government most of my life and I have to wonder, had they known about this, would I have still had that job?,” she said. In 2012, the government’s Disregards and Pardons scheme was launched to allow people historically convicted for consensual same-sex activities to have those convictions deleted from official records. The scheme was expanded in 2023 to include women and more former military personnel affected by the pre-2000 ban on LGBT+ service members. Since the expansion, there have been 40 people given pardons, with the majority granted to former military personnel. Liz is now encouraging other women who may have been in contact with police, or those who were thrown out of the military for their sexuality to apply for pardons in order to find out if they have an unknown conviction. She said: “I can’t think how it is on my records and I’ve never known about it, but I can’t be the only one, they can’t have just pinpointed me. “I didn’t know anything about it, so I had no idea what the pardon would even be for but I was told it was related to same-sex activity.” Liz Stead Liz (middle) attended a “restorative action ceremony” earlier this year alongside her wife Stevie (left) to welcome her back into the military family. Liz served for three and a half years in the RAF and had an exemplary record, but was thrown out when bosses investigated her then-girlfriend and found love letters between the two. She was interrogated by the Special Investigation Branch – the detective arm of the military police which at the time often focussed investigations on same-sex ******* activity – and dismissed. The partial decriminalisation of homosexuality began in the *** in 1967 with the passing of the ******* Offences Act, which decriminalised *********** acts between men over the age of 21 in England and Wales. In Scotland, the law was changed in 1980 and in Northern Ireland, 1982. However, homosexuality remained ******** in Britain’s armed forces until the year 2000, when the European Court of Human Rights ruled the ban ********. As part of reparations made to LGBT Veterans, Liz was invited to a ceremony to return her medals and re-welcome her into the military family. Although the day was once a fond memory for her, she said it was now “tainted” because of the criminal record and she might have considered not attending had she known about that at the time. Peter Gibson, CEO of LGBT+ military charity Fighting With Pride, which helped Liz apply for the pardon, said: “Liz’s experience shows how important it is that justice is properly done to all LGBT+ veterans who suffered under the cruel ban. Lives and careers were ruined under that ‘gay ban’. “It’s shocking that some people who served for their country and were kicked out for simply being their true selves might also have had a criminal record without even knowing.” Safeguarding minister Jess Phillips said that criminal records for same-sex relationships “should never have existed in the first place.” She added: “Each pardon represents real changes to real lives. Some could now have their military medals returned while others can finally walk taller knowing a painful injustice has been finally righted. “I urge anyone with convictions under these cruel and prejudiced laws to apply to our scheme. You deserve justice and we remain committed to righting these historical wrongs.” Source link #Liz #Stead #criminal #record #lesbian #told Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

EU accuses TikTok of breaching ad disclosure rules EU accuses TikTok of breaching ad disclosure rules European Union regulators accuse TikTok of breaching digital safety rules because of shortcomings in the video sharing app’s online ad database. TikTok’s ad repository is not up to the standards required by the bloc’s Digital Services Act, known as the DSA, the 27-nation EU’s executive Commission said on Thursday in preliminary findings from its investigation. The commission said ad databases were vital for researchers to detect scam ads as well as so-called hybrid threat campaigns, co-ordinated information operations and fake ads, “including in the context of elections”. The DSA is a wide-ranging rule book that aims to clean up social media platforms and protect users from risks including election-related disinformation. Platforms have to be transparent about digital ads, including informing users why they are being shown a specific advertisement and who paid for it. The commission said TikTok did not provide necessary information about the content of ads, the users targeted, and who paid for them. The database did not allow for a comprehensive search for ads based on this information, “thereby limiting the usefulness of the tool”, it said. TikTok said it’s reviewing the commission’s findings and remained committed to meeting its DSA obligations. “While we support the goals of the regulation and continue to improve our ad transparency tools, we disagree with some of the commission’s interpretations and note that guidance is being delivered via preliminary findings rather than clear, public guidelines,” the company said. The ad database’s shortcomings prevented a “full inspection” of the risks posed by its ad targeting systems, said Henna Virkkunen, the commission’s executive vice-president for tech sovereignty, security and democracy. “Transparency in online advertising – who pays and how audiences are targeted – is essential to safeguarding the public interest,” Virkkunen said. “Whether we are defending the integrity of our democratic elections, protecting public health, or protecting consumers from scam ads, citizens have a right to know who is behind the messages they see.” TikTok can reply before the commission issues its final decision, which could result in a fine of up to six per cent of the company’s annual global revenue. TikTok is being scrutinised in a separate EU investigation into whether it failed to deal with risks to Romania’s presidential election, which was thrown into turmoil in 2024 over allegations of electoral violations and Russian meddling. Tracking the disinfo on Macron’s ‘cocaine use’ in Ukraine
Pelican Press posted a topic in World News
Tracking the disinfo on Macron’s ‘******** use’ in Ukraine Tracking the disinfo on Macron’s ‘******** use’ in Ukraine Unsubstantiated claims of supposed ******** use by French President Emmanuel Macron and ******* Chancellor Friedrich Merz on a train to Ukraine last weekend may have started from a French account. One post, by a French far-right activist, quickly spread across the internet after being picked up by US conspiracy theorists and making its way to Russia’s leadership. The posts on various social media platforms shared actual footage of Macron, Merz and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in the Kyiv-bound train last Saturday. As Merz and Starmer arrive in the compartment, Macron is seen removing a white tissue from the table. The posts claimed, inaccurately, that the tissue was a bag of ********. Pictures and video taken inside the train by AFP and other media showed that the white object was a crumpled tissue. The conspiracy-laden posts nevertheless accumulated tens of millions of views worldwide. On Sunday, Macron’s office dismissed the rumour as “fake news… being spread by France’s enemies”. France has repeatedly warned about Russian disinformation campaigns in Europe that have grown in intensity during Moscow’s war on Ukraine. – A ‘crowd phenomenon’ – This latest attack built on previous claims among conspiracy theorists that Macron has a ******** habit. As Justin Poncet, a specialist in online analysis, told AFP, some of the accounts attacking Macron have nicknamed him “powdered”. One security source said that French-language accounts started the rumour before it passed to Russian-language accounts and was picked up by senior officials in Moscow. US conspiracy theorists such as Alex Jones, with the large audience he commands, helped amplify the message. Antibot4Navalny, an online collective tracking trolls farms that spread disinformation, conducted its own analysis. “‘Macron, Merz and Starmer were doing coke together on the train’ is UNLIKELY a Russian disinfo campaign,” the collective posted on X. “Kremlin-aligned Telegram channels and online media did AMPLIFY it,” it added. “But the earliest viral tweets were likely first published BEFORE that, by authentic users.” The attack on Macron was not one that was widely coordinated, said Poncet. But he added: “We’re talking about several spheres” but only connected to each other in a fleeting way. Together however, they turned online rumour into a “crowd phenomenon”, he said. – ‘Little white bag’ – Tracing any such viral smear to its source is difficult. But one diplomatic source said that the French authorities had on Saturday found a comment on an X account under a video on Macron’s train trip suggesting there were little white bags on the table. That was reposted on French-language X accounts with screen captures of the video showing the three leaders, said one security source. The spread of the rumour had picked up pace by Saturday evening. At 7:46 pm the French-language RadioRoma account was sharing the video, asking about the “little white bag” Macron was “hiding from the camera”. A subsequent post from that account on the same subject picked up 3.4 million views and was shared 5,000 times over three days, AFP noted. The account is owned by Louis Bopea, formerly a senior figure in France’s far-right National Rally who is particularly active online. Many of his followers helped spread the rumour. – ‘Enemies of France’ – By midday on Sunday, far-right French politicians such as Florian Philippot and Nicolas Dupont-Aignan had joined the hue and cry. (“What is Macron hiding?!” posted Philippot.) In Moscow, foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova picked up the ball, as did Kirill Dmitriev, a senior envoy for Russian President Vladimir Putin. Russia’s news media, including the English-language site of Pravda.com, also ran with the story. Alex Jones also joined in on Sunday with a post to his 4.5 million subscribers on X that was massively viewed. Jones was successfully sued for defamation by families of the victims of the 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. ggy-Dt-bur/jj/rmb Source link #Tracking #disinfo #Macrons #******** #Ukraine Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] -
