Trump tariff ‘tornado’ still hunting markets: Former Medtronic CEO
Trump tariff ‘tornado’ still hunting markets: Former Medtronic CEO
0:04 spk_0
Welcome to a new episode of the Opening bid podcast. I’m Yahoo Finance executive editor Brian Sai. Like I always say, this is the podcast that will make you a smarter investor, *******. And of course, opening bid sponsored by our friends at Vanguard. I would love to, uh, bring in our featured guest here. No strangers to opening bid in Yahoo Finance more broadly. That is former Medtronic CO Bill George. Uh, of course, Bill, uh, successfully led, uh, Medtronic for 10 years as CEO, was on the Starbucks board, Exxon Mobil board, Goldman Sachs board. Bill, did I leave anything out?
0:33 spk_1
Uh, uh, uh, well, yeah, it’s actually not Starbucks, it was Target, Target and, and, uh, Goldman Sachs. OK,
0:40 spk_0
there, thanks for correcting me, because during the break we were talking about Starbucks, so I think it was still, uh, stuck in my head, but nonetheless, uh, good to see you as always and look, um.I call you the CEO whisper. I mean, this is what you do. You know how these CEOs think with good reason. Now we have a trade agreement between the US and China. It’s 90 days. At the
0:59 spk_1
time of
0:59 spk_0
this taping, it’s in 89 days. What should CEOs be doing in this moment?
1:06 spk_1
CEOs are relieved, I can tell you that, that what I would call a truce, I wouldn’t call it a trade agreement. I would call it a truce, uh, that we’re not gonna continue this ridiculous tariffs, 145% on China and they retaliate 125%. That can’t work.Uh, but I think it’s still a wait and see. Are things go stable down. You can’t have new news every day and, uh, that much uncertainty if people really want to invest. I think CEOs are eager to invest. I think the market is eager to see them invest too. I think the response to the market, uh, since then would be clear indication of, let’s stop this, uh, t foolishness and let’s get back to building the country.
1:46 spk_0
If you’re a CEO in this environment, Bill, and youLet’s say 2 months ago, you start to move your supply chain out of China. Now it’s 25% in India, and now it’s in Vietnam, and you’ve moved a little bit to Malaysia. What what do you do? Do you move it back to China?
2:04 spk_1
No, I’m a believer in balance supply chains. I think you shouldn’t have everything in China. I, I worry about Tim Cook, Apple having everything there on the iPhones. And I think it’s good to have some in Vietnam or Malaysia or wherever you want to go. And also having a supply chain in the US. I I’ve always felt that, that uh where you don’t have all the logistical issues that you would have on shipping from Asia. But no doubt there are big differences uh in cost. But you can get those differences picked up in Mexico too, so.Uh, I think a balance supply chain is important, including, by the way,
2:37 spk_0
is the bestadvice then.To the CEO community. Don’t do anything, just learn and listen and study, and just stay.I mean, it’s, it’s a hard gig, and it just seems to be getting harder by the day.
2:51 spk_1
It gets very hard. I would say right now, get ready. Get ready to blast off, so to speak, like there’s a big game coming up, get ready to to launch, but you may want to hold on to your cash and investment dollars for a while before you make those big moves, but be ready.Uh, because I, I think the potential is clearly there all around the world, and I’m a great believer in global markets, so why are we fighting each other? Let’s, let’s trade all around the world. One of the good things that came out of the China deal was that, uh, we’re able to get them to talk about opening up uh uh more opportunities in China for US companies. I think we haven’t done nearly enough of that. And that’s the kind of balance I look for, not trying to cut back on what the ******** are doing here.Uh, so I think that’s really important that we open up those opportunities in Europe and throughout all of Asia.
3:42 spk_0
What are some, I guess, you know, there’s, there was a big theme, or there has been a big theme of decoupling. What do you think the relationship is now between the US and China? Has it already decoupled in light of this trade war?
3:53 spk_1
Uh, I think it’s tense, and I think the ********, I think she is pretty astute. Uh, she really believes that this president and the previous president are trying to hold back China, and he’s not going to be held back. And so he’s, he’s in a pole position. Look, uh, we backed down to him, not the reverse. He didn’t back down to us. He was the one, head of government that challenged uh Arterros and wasn’t willing to back down. And so, uh, we had to back down to him.I’m glad we did. Uh, the tariffs are still very high though, at 30%. So, and that’s the so-called fentanyl deal. Uh, I’m not sure tariffing for fentanyl is the right way to go. I’d rather negotiate that if you’re really concerned about it. But, uh, so I, I think you have a uh a trade challenge, uh, competitor with China, and I think you will for a long time. And they have redone their economy so that they don’t need as much trade with the US. If you saw the numbers last month, trade with the US way down up overall because they’re going to trade with everyone else. And they have very clever ways to do that throughout Asia and throughout Europe, Latin America. The concern I have, Brian, is when we go out of a country, we get into a dispute with them, they come in, and I think that’s not good for the US uh companies.Yeah, cause we can export and we can do business all around the world much more. The key we have though, and the real challenge is gonna be in AI and tech. And can we maintain uh superiority of the ********. Now, the one thing the US has no other country has, I want to stress, new company formation, true innovation, new business models. If you think about what’s driven our successful companies, it’s not just efficiency. No, it’s new business models. And that’s what an Amazon has done. That’s what, uh, that’s what the iPhone has done. You can look across all of our companies. Google is done with search. And so I believe in building up our really strong global companies. I don’t believe in taking them apart for antitrust. I know there are antitrust issues, fine them for that, but don’t take them apart.
5:55 spk_0
Whatare your thoughts then on these AI chip exportcontrols?
6:00 spk_1
Well, I think we should have some control of our technology, and I think the ******** have not observed intellectual property. This is true in my former industry, I tell you, in healthcare, uh, pharmaceuticals, medtech, there is not the kind of support we need from the ******** government. And I think that’s clearly a negotiation we need to have with them, uh, to get them to respect their intellectual property. So yeah, I think we should control our technology, the most advanced technology.Uh, you take an Intel. Intel was doing $5 billion a year in China, but they were selling them second, you know, one generation old chips. So, and I think with the Nvidia being so much in the lead, we need to keep control in that leadership. We need to support these companies because they’re uh they’re they’re national treasures for the US.
6:48 spk_0
I loved what you are, you know, I follow you on LinkedIn, and I loved that you put in a recent post. What we’ve seen, I, I, and I hope I have this right, on the trade front, we’ve seen quote relentless chaos. Is this chaos over now that we have this, you’re not an agreement or a thought, a standstill, whatever you wanna call it.
7:05 spk_1
Well, we’re right in the middle of it. Yeah, the tornado’s still swirling around us, don’t kid yourself. And every CEO knows that. And everyone’s waiting to see what’s gonna change tomorrow. Today we’re gonna do a deal with the, the Saudis, and tomorrow we’ll do a deal uh deal. We just did a deal with Qataris, and tomorrow we’ll do a deal with the Emirates. I mean, you know, let’s see what happens. Uh, and I think that level of uncertainty is still causing people to hold back on investments.Uh, but I, I think they’ve got to move forward. You can’t hold off forever. So everyone’s looking for an opportunity to invest. But I want to see our companies invest globally, so the US companies can dominate the world and we can take advantage of our innovation and technology, uh, to be the world leader. It’s not gonna be through low costs. The idea that we’re bringing manufacturing back is the wrong way to think about it. Let’s work on AI. Let’s work on the technologies. For every job in manufacturing in the US today, there’s 8 or 9 service jobs. Let’s make, let’s upgrade those frontline people and make them more effective in healthcare and retail, and everywhere else they work. Uh, that to me in hospitality, let’s upgrade those jobs, and I think that is critical.
8:16 spk_0
Is then is the, is the president Bill running an outdated playbook and wanting to bring back manufacturing here to the US?
8:21 spk_1
Well, it’s a political playbook. You know, it’s uh, you could call it a Maga playbook. Yeah, absolutely. We’re manufacturing accounts for 8.4% of the jobs. We’re not going back to the 50s and 60s. I can tell you that companies are not going to do those kinds of best. And when they do, it’s gonna be uh the intels of the world creating a chip plant. It’s gonna be, you know, Eli Lilly creatingFactories that are fully automated, these are all gonna be robotized and very few workers. And the workers there are gonna be very highly skilled workers. It’s not gonna be people unskilled workers. That’s yeah, but I’m advocating that we also upgrade the skills on the service front. You know, we don’t count services in the trade balance that the that the White House looks at, certainly we do in all of our statistics. Hey, we have tremendous trade benefits in finance. You know, we dominate the world finance market. Let’s build that up.We dominate the world’s uh healthcare, uh, technology and, you know, and pharmaceuticals. I’m very concerned about cutbacks in R&D and pharma. I think this is a huge, huge issue, and, uh, what’s going on with the universities on the advanced uh technology. So that’s where we should be focusing. That’s where the US is gonna win, and no one can match us in that area. I because people on the other countries, they may be just as creative, just as smart, maybe smarter, well educated. But they don’t know how to form new companies. And so how do we take a company and Amazon comes out of nowhere? How do we take a Google that didn’t exist, or a Microsoft? That’s what we need to focus. Well,
9:54 spk_0
I justhad a good conversation on by the way, no, no, that’s a good point. I just had a good conversation on the, on the podcast, um, with former commerce secretary, Mr. Wilbur Ross, and I asked him point blank, do you believeUh, we can make iPhones in America. If you were in Tim Cook’s seat, would you sign off on bringing an iPhone production back to the US to to appease the president, even if you will not make as much money as you normally would.
10:22 spk_1
I would never do that. But what I’m upset about it is we blew up NAFTA. The whole purpose of NAFTA, USMCA correction, uh, why, so that we can produce in Canada and Mexico. Look what’s happening to Mary Barra at General Motors, which you know it’s a $5 billion hit from Tros. And we haven’t fixed that yet. And so they, these supply chains are set up for 30, 40, 50 years. You can’t change them overnight. And to blow that up, it was a huge mistake. I think we need that competitiveness right here in North America, and it was working well for us. That’s how we attracted all the Germans, the Japanese, the Korean, ******** car companies coming here. Why would we blow that up? I think that was an enormous mistake.
11:03 spk_0
All right, hang with us, Bill. We’re gonna go off for a quick break. Lots more to talk about on the other side of this break on opening date. All right, welcome back to our opening bid here at the Nasdaq in Times Square. Having a fun chat here with Medtronic, our former Medtronic Tronic CEO Bill George. Uh, and I, I have to mention again, uh, on the board, formerly on the target board, uh, ExxonMobil and Goldman Sachs, and of course this podcast sponsored by our friends at Vanguard, Bill, you mentioned Mary Barra, and now we’re almost, you know, I’ve talked to Mary a bunch of times. I mean, best in class leader has run General Motors what for over a decade.Um, responsible for electric vehicle push, and I look at what she has done. I look at what Ford’s or Jim Farley has done so far year to date, really been dealt a challenging, challenging hand, uh, in running these public companies against a trade war. Now that we are we’re almost mid-year, what CEOs that you know, or you’re watching from afar doing a good job, like, you know what, I’m gonna give that CEO an A plus because, you know what, they’re doing OK during this trade war.
12:10 spk_1
Well, someone and someone talking about is, is good or probably the best CEO in the world, Satya Nadella and Microsoft. And you didn’t see him get trapped in all these gameplay. He’s doing the job, and he could continue to be Markov. Actually, Tim Cook is uh right up there with him at uh at Apple. So I think he’s doing a fantastic job navigating through all this. Those two people. You mentioned Mary, I think, look, Mary’s got a very tough hand. But I think she’s doing terrific, and Farley’s doing a great job at Ford. Uh, so I’m very pleased with that. And uh another one that I would mention that’s really done a fantastic job is Dougie Millan. We country me being on the Target board. I’m not very happy with Target right now. They’ve abandoned their uniqueness, and Walmart is coming upscale to move into their markets, and it’s done a great job of that. Target’s had negative customer sales, and they all accept one quarter. For the last year or two. This is very negative, but Doug MacMiller is doing a great job and, and Costco, you know, they went through a CEO change. I knew Craig Jeenk better, but they’ve done a fantastic both those organizations. So we can see where creativity and great leadership makes a difference. And by the way, you look at the financial markets, you look at Jamie Dimon, and early on in his tenure, David Zalman got a lot of critic boy, he’s done a fantastic job. He’s tripled the stock price at theIn his tenure at Goldman Sachs, so, and Jamie just continues to be the leader, not just in American finance, but of the world. And when he speaks, people do listen.
13:39 spk_0
Yes, uh, they most certainly do. And of course, I get a shout out to Ya Finance, our company of the year last year was in fact Walmart had a great chat with Doc Millan down in Arkansas, sitting in the grocery section. You can go to yahoo Finds.com and check that out. But to your point, I just wanna, as the kids would say, Bill, double click on a topic because you mentioned the Walmart target battle, and Walmart.Wow, they’ve done a heck of a job, uh, under Doug, expanded more to groceries. The AI is now there, the website works, they deliver things to you same day. What does Target need to do? Because there is this disparity, even before this trade war, the sales between these two companies were very, very different, and now you have to think that we are having probably inflation based upon from overseas where Target gets a lot of its goods, like they may see a couple challenging quarters. What has to happen there?
14:26 spk_1
Well, I think Target, Brian Cornell is gonna retire in uh September, and I think they need a very creative merchant that makes them unique, different from our. It’s not true anymore. It used to be back when I was on the board, Bob Aerosillo. He was, he did amazing things like bringing in Michael Graves, the architect in the design line of of teapots. But he did that to be unique in his advertising.Unique. A new CEO Target needs to make them unique and different from Walmart to attract people. They had this Target and casual chic, and that’s what they need to do, uh, or cheap chic, whatever you want to.
15:01 spk_0
Isaac Mizrahi. Now you, I used to be an analyst, Bill, so like I remember covering Tar with all these, I never heard, I didn’t even know what cheap chic was. I’m like, What the hell is that? What are these people talking about in these analystreports.
15:11 spk_1
Yeah, and the other one said that, by the way, Spanish company Zara, that they can copy anything in about 2 weeks and bring it to market. But Target needs to do those things and shorten their supply chains and be much more aggressive. And they never really made it in food. I think that was something I pushed for when I was on the board, uh, that was a number of years ago,
15:28 spk_0
but I don’t get me started, Bill. Please, I don’t get me going on the Target food section. I, I, that’s gonna take up a whole hour podcast. I don’t have time for that. Um, they need that bottom up, they needed some more food.I mean, I cannot do a necessarily a full fresh food grocery shopping session at a Target. I mean, Walmart has a older inside ofa store.
15:49 spk_1
If you’re a retailer, how many times a week do your customers come into the store to buy merchandise?Once, once every other week, once every 3 weeks. How many times a month do they come in to buy food? You know, 3 times a week, 12 times a month. That’s the difference. That’s where MacMillan has really made it and he’s perfected that. And, uh, by the way, he’s done a great job competing with Amazon too. So he’s still second Amazon’s a very tough competitor, and he has weathered that well.
16:20 spk_0
Let’s say, let’s stay on the CEO beat because if there’s a theme that has happened during first quarter earnings season, as these companies reported, there’s no guidance. You know, I just talked to Mattel’s CEO Anan Kris. Uh, he had to pull his guidance bill, you know, just 3 months ago, he was looking for almost $1.72 a share earnings this year. Now that’s off the table. I just talked to Mercedes CEO, uh, two days ago.Despite the trade agreement, thought, whatever it is, he’s not bringing back the guidance that he pulled in late April. What do CEOs do with guidance here in this environment?
16:54 spk_1
If they didn’t get away from it, they should. And I think they’re smart to pull it. I think Mary was smart to pull hers, uh, because the market loves it. Hey, you know, as an analyst, you can make a lot of money, but you should do the analysis. If I shouldn’t give you the numbers and say, OK, here’s how much we’re gonna spend in this area, here’s our revenue projections and all that.I realized that’s the game and I’m fighting the game. Uh, but so I think right now, there’s too much uncertainty. So I’m just shooting in the wind to give you a number when I don’t know what the ground rules are. If you tell me what the ground rules are, I’ll tell you what we’ll do. That I’ll tell you.But I need to have some ground rules. I’ll tell you, when new products are coming to market, I can give you some idea of how we’re gonna do revenue-wise and help you figure it out. But I think the whole idea right now is, no one knows. How do you know what’s gonna, it’s not just tariffs, it’s what’s gonna happen with in the global markets, where it’s just such a big part of people’s business, including a Walmart. This is not just a domestic company. And uh that’s so important, and that’s why I can’t understand why we don’t emphasize the importance of global markets. And uh yes, let’s export more, OK? That’s fine. I’m all for that, but let’s export technology without giving away the crown jewels. That’s the results of technology, the products we put together. And let’s be the dominant global player in AI. Let’s use AI not just to be more efficient. That’s what I’m concerned about. Let’s use it to upgrade our workers so that we don’t have need ranges of analysts telling them what to do. They’re so skilled, they can do all the work because they got an AI right in their hand that they can look at and get all the answers very quickly.
18:30 spk_0
How doyou know then, as a CEO or even a CFO, how do you know when to bring back guidance in this environment, even if we have someRules of the road in another month. One post on social media could change it all over again. Yeah.
18:46 spk_1
I’ll, I’ll bring back guidance when you cause me to do so, and I’ll give you a wide range. It’s wide range as you’ll let me get away with it. You can do the point estimates if you want.
18:55 spk_0
I’ll get $1 all the way for $10. Take that analyst.
18:58 spk_1
And the other thing too is, of course, I’m a long term thinker about business and also a long-term investor. So stock companies don’t go like this. They don’t go straight up. They go up and down like this, even a Medtronic where we had aYou know, 60 times increase our market cap. It didn’t go straight up, you know, there’s some peak periods. And of course, the analysts loved that, that’s fine. And uhSo as long as we’re talking about it, and I’ll give my other shot is don’t give away all your cash. Cash, cash is king or queen if you want. A good, uh, it’s a good way for life that buybacks. Invest in your company, invest in your business, invest in acquisitions. That’s what they want to do. And I just want to get some ******* of predictability so that people will invest it. The M&A market was ready to go in December. I can tell you. You could talk to to David Goldman or or or any of them. And they’ll tell you it was ready to go, and all of a sudden, everything went on pause. But those, those deals are there to be done, and they’ll strengthen American and global companies.
19:58 spk_0
Lastly, Bill, I’d love to get your hot take on this as we wrap up this episode. What is your biggest concern on US trade policy moving forward?
20:08 spk_1
Uncertainty and instability.I, I don’t, we don’t need a trade balance. We need to open up markets for American global companies and lead the markets. And, you know, I’m a believer in the, the laws of the economic laws and comparative advantage. If we can take advantage of the better, better rates in Asia or in Mexico, we should do it. We should be very global in our thinking as companies and have a balanced supply chain, uh so that we aren’t locked into one country.
20:37 spk_0
Always appreciate your time. For Medtronic Seal Bill George, uh, always great to hear your insights on all things CEOs, uh, business, and, well, you know, a little bit of life too. Bill, we’ll talk to you soon.
20:47 spk_1
Thank you very much, Brian, forhaving me on.
20:48 spk_0
That’s it for the latest episode of Opening id sponsored by our friends over at Vanguard, and like I always say, continue to hit us with all of those likes and thumbs up on all the social media platforms and podcast platforms. I very much enjoy all of your feedback. I learned a lot. We’ll talk to you soon.

NWS says staffing cuts & service reductions won’t have ‘significant impact’ on forecasting today’s storm
When asked if recent reports regarding a reduction of services due to nationwide staffing cuts will have any impact on forecasting today’s storm, National Weather Service Public Affairs Specialist Erica Grow Cei said the agency “will ensure resilience and continuity of mission-critical functions and does not anticipate a significant impact in services” in an email to a USA TODAY NETWORK – Wisconsin reporter.
The Green Bay Press-Gazette reported in March that the National Weather Service Green Bay office would launch one weather balloon per day instead of its typical two due to staffing shortages. The Green Bay office is the only National Weather Service office that launches weather balloons in Wisconsin, according to its website.
“Several local NWS offices are temporarily operating below around-the-clock staffing. NWS is mitigating impacts by temporarily reassigning meteorologists and directing nearby offices to provide additional support,” Cei said.
The National Weather Service is seeking to fill 155 positions ahead of hurricane season beginning on June 1, according to a report by CNN on May 14. The service’s governing agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, offered reassignment opportunities to its employees working in other departments.
“NWS is prepared to meet the rigorous demands of hurricane season and will continue to prioritize the safety and security of the American people,” Cei said.

Where are the safest places to shelter during a severe storm?
The National Weather Service Green Bay shared graphics on where to go during severe weather.
The National Weather Service in Green Bay shared tips on where to find safe places to shelter during a storm at about noon May 15 on its Facebook page.
The safest place to be during storms is inside, away from doors, windows and outer walls. According to graphics the NWS Green Bay shared, top floor rooms and exterior rooms or rooms with windows do not provide protection. Basements with emergency supply kits are the safest options. If you don’t have a basement, an interior room with no windows will provide security.
For those who are traveling during severe storms, the NWS suggests getting off the road and driving to a designated shelter, basement or safe room.
Do not look for refuge outside, under an overpass or under a tree. Those options put you at greater risk of injury or death from flying debris or powerful winds.
If shelter is not available to you, stay in the vehicle with your seat belt on and your head below the windows with your hands covering your head. You can also find a ditch lower than the roadway to lay in with your hands covering your head, according to a graphic shared by the NWS Green Bay.

Weather radio transmitters out of service before expected severe weather Thursday
Central and Northeast Wisconsin residents are without weather radio coverage as severe weather approaches May 15.
The National Weather Service in Green Bay is updating its Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System, which is expected to be completed by the evening of May 15, according to a National Weather Service news release. Weather radio broadcast was offline since the start of the update at 8 a.m. May 13.
Nine transmitters across central and northeastern Wisconsin are listed on the National Weather Service website as “OUT OF SERVICE.” Locations with affected transmitters include Wausau, Green Bay, Rhinelander, Coloma and New London.
No other impacts to core services of forecasts and weather watches, warnings and advisories, are expected, according to the news release.
Forecast operations will be conducted by the National Weather Service back-up office in Milwaukee, the news release said. The radar station near Green Bay, called KGRB, will remain active and the National Weather Service Green Bay office will remain open and staffed through the software update, according to the release.

A timeline and what to expect as afternoon storms approach central Wisconsin
A broken line of storms will form over Central Wisconsin between 3 and 5 p.m. May 15 and move northeast out of the area by 7 to 8 p.m., Kira Jesse, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Green Bay told a USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin reporter Thursday morning.
Jesse said it is unlikely we will see a strong line of storms approaching Central Wisconsin, as they will be forming over the area.
All severe weather threats are possible with these storms, including tornadoes, large hail and strong winds, Jesse said.
Jesse encouraged anyone who lives in a less-sturdy building to create a backup plan for where to go when the storms approach, including with a friend, neighbor or relative. If a warning is issued, get to your planned safe location.
Jesse also said anyone in the path of the storms should have multiple ways to receive warning alerts including via television, radio, internet and cell phones.

Central Wisconsin weather radarWisconsin severe weather watches and warningsWhat is a tornado watch?
When a tornado watch is in place tornadoes are possible in and near the watch area, according to the National Weather Service.
The National Weather Service suggests people who are in the warning area review and discuss their emergency plans, check supplies and have a safe room incase the weather takes a turn for the worse.
What is a tornado warning?
When a tornado warning is issued it means a tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar. There is imminent danger to life and property.
Here are some suggestions from the National Weather Service if a tornado warning is issued for your area:
Move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building
If in a mobile home, a vehicle, or outdoors, move to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris
Warnings typically are for a much smaller area that may be impacted by a tornado identified by a forecaster on radar, a trained spotter or law enforcement who is watching the storm, according to National Weather Service.
Tornado warnings are issued by your local forecast office.

Real Reason New Marvel Game’s Massive Delay Is Being Called ‘The Amy Hennig Curse’
Real Reason New Marvel Game’s Massive Delay Is Being Called ‘The Amy Hennig Curse’
Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is one of the most anticipated superhero games, which recently got delayed to early 2026. Not that it was unexpected, as the trend of delays has been common in the gaming industry recently. Ever since the Cyberpunk 2077 fiasco, developers have been critical about releasing a polished product.
Delaying is both a good and a bad thing for a game release. While asking for more time allows for polishing, it also sort of kills the hype to some extent. That is certainly not the case for Rockstar Games, but for others, it’s the harsh reality. However, fans don’t blame Skydance for the delay, instead, they are calling it the Amy Hennig curse.
The Amy Hennig curse might just be real
Got to fight the curse! | Image Credit: Skydance Interactive
Amy Hennig is the lead writer and producer of Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra. In the past, she was also the Creative Director and writer for the first three Uncharted games. Why not the fourth? That’s where the curse lies.
If you’ve played the first three Uncharted games, you know how good the stories are. So it’s logical to let Hennig take care of the fourth rendition. She indeed was, and had written a lot of it. However, all her work was scrapped as she left Naughty Dog after having “creative disagreements.”
After her departure, she joined EA to work on a Star Wars project codenamed “Rantag.” Alas, that didn’t see the light of day as it was later cancelled as Visceral Games was shut down by EA. It was supposed to be a large-scale heist game, with a linear playstyle. Hennig was the perfect choice, but it didn’t last long.

— Skydance Games (@SkydanceGames) May 13, 2025
Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra was supposed to release in late 2025, however, Skydance recently announced a delay. According to the developers, the game will be released in early 2026 to deliver a polished game. However, fans fear that it might get cancelled, as there’s no gameplay showcase.
Moreover, Amy Hennig has been unlucky for a long time, thus, fans think it’s a curse. Hope it’s not true, as she deserves to showcase another successful project.
Fans are worried about Amy Hennig’s ongoing project
It surely is concerning. | Image Credit: Skydance Interactive
Fans have taken notice of how much trouble Amy Hennig has been facing ever since she departed from Naughty Dog. Everybody loves how she produces stories and worlds, only to get trampled by bad management. Quality workers like her should get more praise.
Comment byu/Aralis1 from discussion ingamernews
Some also feel that Hennig has always been invited to the most ambitious projects, only to get screwed at the end of cycle. Some even push the allegations against Naughty Dog, forcing her out as she was doing great there. It’s almost as if, whenever she is trying to do something grand, her luck seems to sour.
Comment byu/Aralis1 from discussion ingamernews
Comment byu/Aralis1 from discussion ingamernews
Due to this constant pattern of Amy Hennig being part of troubled projects, people fear that it will be cancelled. Fans are waiting to see the next masterpiece, as it’s been a long time. Moreover, Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is a unique project that takes Marvel fans to a different timeline.
The likelihood of the project being cancelled is low, as Skydance Interactive has taken charge of it. They have created all the projects they’ve promised. Furthermore, they are well-funded. So that fear shouldn’t be there. If the gameplay is good enough, this game will fly.
Is it true that Amy Hennig got forced out of Naughty Dog?
There are a lot of rumors suggesting Amy Hennig was forced out of Naughty Dog. Questions have been raised to Neil Druckmann about it, but he has said nothing of that sort happened. However, there were problems within the company when Hennig chose to leave, at least some interviews suggest so.
Comment byu/Aralis1 from discussion ingamernews
Alan Tudyk, the voice of K-2SO from Andor, spoke to IGN in 2015 regarding his experience at Naughty Dog. This is what he said about his resignation:
I liked it… they… ummm… they fired… ummm… [lets out a massive sigh] I left, I quit! [laughs] So, I didn’t like it. I mean, I left because they decided to go a different way with it, and so when they did that, when they changed leadership.
It is referring to the time when Neil Druckmann was made the Creative Director for Uncharted after Amy Hennig left. Following Hennig, a lot of people left, like director Justin Richmon, lead character artist Michael Knowland, and art director Nate Wells.
It is still suspected that some internal politics have caused these people to leave. There is no evidence regarding it. But all these are talented people. It’s not likely they’d leave the project midway. It is highly possible that people didn’t like Druckmann’s lead as he brought a lot of changes.
Back in 2015, Nolan North, the voice actor of Nathan Drake, also shared some inside story while speaking at Metrocon:
Amy is still a very, very dear friend of mine, and she’s brilliant. But the Last of Us guys were the next team there, so they took over. They just wanted their own flavor. They got rid of some of the other people that were involved and just redid their thing.
Nolan specified that he didn’t know what caused a clash and was saddened by Amy Hennig’s departure. Moreover, he also said that the new management also “got rid” of people who were involved and replaced their work.
Nolan North also had some issues with the changed script, as he was part of the game franchise the longest. In his words,” the tone was slightly different,” compared to the original storyline. He was understanding about it and kept it to himself.
Neil Druckmann is now the studio head of Naughty Dog, his changes eventually worked then. It’s about time Amy Hennigs gets her showcase with the release of Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra.
Do you think Amy Hennig’s curse is real? Will Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra get delayed again in 2026? Let us know about your thoughts in the comments below.

After Anderson Cooper Called Out Trump’s “Absurd” Speech About White South African Refugees, People Have A Lot To Say
After Anderson Cooper Called Out Trump’s “Absurd” Speech About White South African Refugees, People Have A Lot To Say
You’ve probably heard by now that Donald Trump is welcoming white South Africans into the US and offering them fast-tracked citizenship.
Andrew Harnik / Getty Images
On Monday, the president said, “It’s a genocide that’s taking place… Farmers are being killed. They happen to be white. But whether they are white or ****** makes no difference to me. But white farmers are being brutally killed, and their land is being confiscated in South Africa.”
RSBN / Twitter: @atrupar
According to ABC News, 59 Afrikaners (white South Africans with Dutch ancestry) have entered the country, and more will arrive in the coming months. The outlet noted that the Trump administration has been curiously evasive when asked who is paying for the resettlement.
Obviously, this move is completely at odds with Trump’s usual immigration stance. His administration has rejected refugees from a number of countries, including Haiti and Afghanistan, while increasing deportation efforts and sending people to a prison in El Salvador.
David Dee Delgado / Getty Images
And in case you were curious, the South African government has denied all of Trump’s accusations. Additionally, CNN’s Anderson Cooper reported that ****** South Africans make up 80% of the population but only own about 4% of private land. The South African government confirmed no land has been seized from white South Africans — despite frustrations over land ownership since apartheid ended in 1994.
Here’s what the internet is saying:
Responses are from this TikTok video, this TikTok video, and X (formerly Twitter).
1.”Just a coincidence that Elon is from South Africa.”

2.”This is a slap in the face for the real refugees who have been waiting in line for years.”
3.”Calling White immigrants refugees and ****** and Brown immigrants ‘******** aliens’ is a textbook case of propaganda.”
4.”He’s decolonising South Africa.”

5.”I hate to break it to you guys, but there is no genocide of white people in South Africa.”
6.”Ahhhh….so as long as they’re white it’s right in trumps mind.”
7.”As an afrikaner south african, i feel confused that people believe this.”
8.”Why don’t the south africans go back to where they came from and fix their own country? Am I doing this right, MAGA?”
9.”The blatant racism is astounding.”
10.”‘white’ and ‘racial discrimination’ in the same sentence.”
11.”This is such an embarrassment to white South Africans. I’m sincerely sorry to all ****** South Africans. As a white South African I will easily confirm that I am in no way targeted or disadvantaged. In fact I am advantaged at the expense of ****** South Africans.”
12.”This is just a big middle finger to the Left and to the rest of the world. It’s blatant racial preference and he knows it and so does everyone else.”

Walmart raising prices amid tariff uncertainty
Walmart plans to raise prices as tariff uncertainty looms over upcoming holidays
03:30
President Trump on Friday said his administration will send letters that inform other nations of the tariff rates the U.S. will impose on imports, adding that “it’s not possible to meet the number of people that want to see us.”
“[W]e have, at the same time, 150 countries that want to make a deal, but you’re not able to see that many countries,” Mr. Trump said during a Friday business roundtable between the U.S. and United Arab Emirates.
Mr. Trump said the letters will be sent by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, adding that the rates “would be very fair, but we’ll be telling people what they’ll be paying to do business in the United States.”
The Trump administration has been negotiating with the U.K., China and other major trading partners in recent weeks over his April 2 tariffs, which set historically high duties on imported goods for almost every country on the globe.
U.S. companies such as Walmart and Target, along with many small businesses, pay the tariffs on imports — not the nations that produce the goods — and those companies typically pass off the costs to American consumers in the form of higher prices.

An Authentic Viticultural Experience at Mikra Thira
An Authentic Viticultural Experience at Mikra Thira
Just a short boat ride from Santorini, you’ll find yourself on Thirassia, an island that preserves its traditional character and volcanic charm. Nestled in the village of Potamos lies the Mikra Thira Winery – a pioneering project that highlights the island’s unique vineyard, the first and only winery on Thirassia.
Visionaries Vangelis Gerovassiliou, Vassilis Tsaktsarlis, and Ioanna Vamvakouri dreamed of a winery that seamlessly blends with the Cycladic landscape and culture. Choosing Thirassia – a secluded and nearly untouched island—was no coincidence; it was both a challenge and an inspiration to create a space that bridges the old with the new.
The winery is surrounded by privately owned organic vineyards on Thirassia, with cultivation also extending to selected vineyards on Santorini. Assyrtiko, the region’s iconic grape variety, takes center stage, accompanied by local varieties such as Aidani, Athiri, Mavrotragano, and Mandilaria. The traditional kouloura (basket) technique protects the grapes from the sun and wind.
Mikra Thira offers a unique tour and tasting experience, where the wine itself narrates the story of the place.

Bees swarm, attack and kill 3 horses in Texas: ‘They didn’t give up’
Bees swarm, attack and kill 3 horses in Texas: ‘They didn’t give up’
Baillie Hillman knew something wasn’t right.
In the cool spring morning, she had put three horses out on the fresh grass of her front yard. Now, instead of grazing, the horses were standing still, heads down – a large cloud of flies surrounding them.
“When she went outside, she realized it was actually bees,” said Shane Stalnacker, administrative officer with the Comanche Volunteer Fire Department in Texas. The huge swarm was attacking.
Over the course of that morning on May 9, Hillman, her partner James Ramirez, firefighters from two counties, emergency medical technicians and veterinarians would fight to protect the horses from the bees, believed to be Africanized honey bees — known as killer bees.
Despite all their efforts, they would fail. All three horses succumbed to the attack and died.
When the yard was finally cleared of bees, thanks to Stalnacker’s quick thinking and a bottle of Dawn dish soap, the cause was discovered. A tree at the edge of their property was infested with the bees. When it was cut down the next day, authorities discovered just how many bees they’d been dealing with.
“The hive was approximately seven feet long. There were millions of bees in there,” said Stalnacker.
Emergency services and fire fighters responding to a potential killer bee attack in Comanche, Texas that killed three quarter horses.
Hours of fighting the bees
When Hillman ran out to check on the horses, she immediately realized it was not flies but bees that were attacking them.
“They attacked me as soon as I got outside,” said Hillman. “They were in my ears, my glasses, my hair,” She went back inside to call first Ramirez and then 911.
The Comanche Volunteer Fire Department, local emergency services and sheriff’s officers arrived to help, finding swarms of what they believe were Africanized honey bees in the area where the horses were standing.
“We haven’t had it confirmed that they were Africanized, but everyone’s saying they couldn’t imagine it being anything else due to their sheer numbers and their extremely aggressive behavior. They didn’t give up,” said Hillman.
“We got assistance from the Guthrie Volunteer Fire Department, who brought bee suits,” Stalnacker said. He also thought to ask them to bring some Dawn dishwashing soap so it could be mixed in with water to spray on the bees and the hive, to make them unable to fly.
The soap was added to the firetruck’s water tank and the horses were sprayed with soapy water which killed the bees.
“The Comanche firefighters and Ramierez donned the bee suits and proceeded to do what they could to clear the bees that remained on the horses,” he said. In the process, one of them kicked Ramirez but he continued working to save the animals.
The horses were finally moved away from the bees, but sustained tens of thousands of stings, many of them around the their eyes nostrils and mouths.
“Their bodies were covered in welts,” said Hillman.
A local veterinarian and vet tech arrived to treat the horses but unfortunately, their injuries from the massive numbers of bee stings were too great and all three horses died.
“I just hope the story can get out there so people can be aware,” said Hillman. “You hear that the Africanized bees are here and that they’re around but you don’t realize what that means. If they can kill three horses, what could they do to kids or an elderly person that can’t run.”
“They just had tens of thousands of stings all over their bodies,” Hillman said.
Rodeo horses died after attack
The three were all American quarter horses, nine-year-old Clovis, five-year-old Pepper and six-year-old Ace.
“James is a rodeo cowboy with the PRCA Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association. I compete as an amateur,” said Hillman.
“Pepper was my up-and-coming carrel horse, Clovis was my team roping horse. Ace was James’ up-and-coming calf roping horse,” she said.
Clovis died in the couple’s backyard within hours. “His head swelled up and we think he died of a seizure,” she said.
Both Ace and Pepper made it to the veterinarian. Despite working on Ace for 45 minutes, they were unable to save her from massive seizures and eventually had to euthanize her.
Pepper’s throat swelled up so much the veterinarian had to perform a tracheotomy so she could breath. But after a day, she too ended up having seizures and died.
An enormous but unsuspected hive
After some hours the authorities were able to work out what had happened. The grass in the front lawn had been allowed to grow uncut during the spring, for the horses, so the owners had not been out into the area to inspect it. Next door, the neighbors had just mowed their lawn early that morning.
“Bees are pretty dormant in the cool mornings, then when the temperature started to warm up, the bees came out and were upset and they found the horses and attacked them,” said Stalnacker.
The hive was discovered in a tree just at the property line between the two houses.
A beekeeper who came to take down the hive told the couple he believed it might have been an existing honey bee hive that was taken over by killer bees. Known as usurpation, Africanized honey bees are known to do this, killing the resident queen.
Prior to the attack, Hillman said she’d never once been stung by a bee.
What are killer bees?
The bees are believed to be Africanized, a cross between local honey bees and African honey bees that first appeared in 1956, when a beekeeper in Brazil accidentally released 26 Tanzanian queen bees and their swarms into the wild.
The bees had been brought from Africa in an attempt to increase honey production. Once they escaped, they thrived.
While similar in appearance to common honey bees, the African bees are much more dangerous. They have a high tendency to swarm and exhibit highly defensive behavior, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
By the early 1990s Africanized bees began showing up in the southern United States and have now been found in Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, and Texas, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Invasive Species Information Center.
Killer bees have been seen in the area before, said Stalnacker.
“Last year an individual was clearing some land and disturbed a hollow tree that had bees in it and they went after him,” he said. “They placed the gentleman in the back of a truck and they raced down the road – it was half a mile before the bees gave up.”

The Dark Ages Due to DRM
The Dark Ages Due to DRM
The launch of Doom: The Dark Ages yesterday should have been a celebration for fans of id Software’s legendary franchise. Instead, thousands of Linux users found themselves staring at lockout screens rather than slaying demons.
The culprit? Denuvo, the controversial DRM system that’s supposed to prevent piracy but is instead preventing legitimate customers from accessing their $70+ purchase.
What makes this situation particularly frustrating is the timing. Many affected users specifically paid for the Premium Edition to gain early access, only to spend that exclusive ******* fighting with DRM rather than hellspawn.
When DRM becomes your worst nightmare
The core issue plaguing Linux users stems from how Denuvo tracks game installations. When players attempt to troubleshoot performance issues by switching between different versions of Proton (Valve’s compatibility layer for running Windows games on Linux), Denuvo incorrectly flags these actions as multiple hardware activations.
This Reddit post highlights the absurdity of the situation. The user, who pre-ordered Doom: The Dark Ages for early access, was simply trying to fix ****** screen issues with AMD’s FSR technology by testing different Proton versions. But, after just a few attempts, Denuvo locked them out completely for 24 hours, effectively wasting their early access *******.
The technical explanation is straightforward: Denuvo limits users to five “activations” within a 24-hour *******. Once this limit is reached, players are completely locked out until the restriction ******* expires.
For Linux gamers who routinely need to test different Proton configurations, this creates an impossible situation:
Comment byu/d3vilguard from discussion inlinux_gaming
The irony hasn’t been lost on the gaming community. While paying customers struggle with lockouts and issues, those who obtain the game through less legitimate means don’t have to deal with Denuvo at all.
The very system designed to prevent piracy is actively encouraging it:
Comment byu/d3vilguard from discussion inlinux_gaming
Comment byu/d3vilguard from discussion inlinux_gaming
Comment byu/d3vilguard from discussion inlinux_gaming
This debacle highlights the fundamental problem with invasive DRM: it punishes legitimate customers while pirates potentially enjoy a superior experience. The very people who supported the developers financially are the ones being locked out of their purchase.
Paying a premium for problems, are you?
DRM: Definitely Restricting Myself (from playing). | Image Credit: id Software
The Doom: The Dark Ages DRM disaster is just one more example of how increasingly risky pre-ordering games has become in today’s gaming industry.
Publishers have mastered the art of extracting maximum cash from eager fans before they can even see what they’re buying, all while delivering increasingly problematic day-one experiences.
Consider the math: players paid $100 for the Premium Edition, primarily to gain 48-hour early access. Many of these same players then lost 24 hours of that ******* to DRM lockouts. That’s effectively paying an extra $30 for the privilege of being frustrated and disappointed a day earlier than everyone else.
Comment byu/JDGumby from discussion inlinux_gaming
Pre-orders also remove the financial incentive for publishers to deliver polished products. When millions of dollars roll in before release day, the pressure to fix bugs or optimize performance significantly diminishes. Why rush to perfect something that’s already… sold?
The cold truth is that pre-ordering in 2025 means volunteering as an unpaid beta tester. While early adopters struggle with day-one bugs, DRM lockouts, and server crashes, patient gamers will eventually enjoy a more stable experience at a 30-40% discount just months later.
What’s your experience with DRM in games? Have you encountered similar issues with Doom: The Dark Ages or other titles? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

While fully supported on the aforementioned Intel platforms, AMD’s AM5 platform doesn’t currently support CUDIMMs on its Ryzen 7000 series, while support is limited for Ryzen 8000 and Ryzen 9000-series CPUs.
In a recent interview, AMD confirmed that AM5 can support CUDIMM, but wouldn’t be drawn on a release date for support, possibly indicating another generation of CPUs is required for fully-fledged support.
MSI has confirmed that AMD Ryzen 8000 and 9000 processors do support CUDIMM on X870 and 870E motherboards. So while future support improved isn’t impossible, there’s no guarantee of a timeline or whether AMD can match the heady heights of 9,200 MT/s performance seen on Intel Arrow Lake-S.

Barclays hikes AMD price target on following Saudi deal
Barclays hikes AMD price target on following Saudi deal
Barclays sees even more upside in store for Advanced Micro Devices after its recent Humain deal announcement. Analyst Tom O’Malley, who has an overweight rating on the chipmaker, raised his price target on the name by $20 to $130, implying 13% upside potential. The stock has rallied this week, rising nearly 12% week to date, after AMD struck a deal with Saudi company Humain to supply the company chips for building 500 megawatts of AI capacity. Humain, which will be owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, has committed $10 billion to the project, AMD said. Also fueling the rally this week, AMD announced on Wednesday that its board of directors has authorized $6 billion in share buybacks . “HUMAIN is one of the more significant company wins to date and is notably split equally in power budget with NVDA,” the analyst wrote on Thursday. O’Malley added that the $10 billion chip deployment will be across “multiple chip generations (starting with MI355) and move to full rack scale solutions at MI400 (which include AMD CPUs/GPUs/NiCs/software). “Think HUMAIN ramps aggressively and in increments of 75-100 [megawatts] with $10B a target, not a cap.” AMD 5D mountain AMD, 5-day Beyond the Humain deal, O’Malley said the company is “messaging another Tier 1” customer, with more details on that matter potentially coming next month. Additionally, he noted that the guidance for the second half of the year with its Client segment is more of a reflection of conservatism in the macro environment rather than “concrete order downticks.” Like O’Malley, Wall Street is largely bullish on AMD, with 35 analysts among the 52 in total covering it having a strong buy or buy rating, per LSEG. While this week’s gains put the stock’s one-month advance at more than 30%, it has still seen declines year to date, falling almost 5% in that *******.

Russia, Ukraine remain far apart as 1st direct talks in 3 years underway – National
Russia and Ukraine held their first direct peace talks in three years Friday, gathering in Istanbul for Turkish-brokered negotiations, but officials and observers expected them to yield little immediate progress on stopping the more than three-year war.
A Ukrainian delegation led by Defense Minister Rustem Umerov sat down with a low-level Russian team headed by presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky, according to Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi, who published a photo of the meeting.
The officials present sat around a U-shaped table, with the Russians and Ukrainians facing each other.
A senior Ukrainian official close to the talks said that Kyiv’s delegation was prepared to “achieve a lot today” and with a real mandate to resolve key issues. The official, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to make official statements, said the outcome hinges on whether Moscow is equally serious.

Both countries have tried to persuade U.S. President Donald Trump, who has expressed frustration over the slow progress and threatened to punish foot-dragging, that they are eager to resolve the conflict amid extensive diplomatic maneuvering.
The latest push to end the fighting got off to a rocky start on Thursday, when Russian President Vladimir Putin spurned an offer by Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy to meet face-to-face. Delegations from the two countries also flew to different Turkish cities and put together teams of significantly different diplomatic heft for possible talks.
Although expectations for a possible Putin-Zelenskyy meeting were low, the apparent lack of traction in peace efforts frustrated hopes of bold steps being taken in Turkey toward reaching a settlement.

The two sides remain far part
The two sides are far apart in their conditions for ending the war, and Trump said Thursday during a trip to the Middle East that a meeting between himself and Putin was crucial to breaking the deadlock.

“I think it’s time for us to just do it,” Trump told reporters in Abu Dhabi.
Comments Friday by Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov appeared to indicate that momentum for a summit is building, as Peskov told reporters top-level talks were “certainly needed.” But he noted that preparing a summit would take time.
Ukraine has accepted a U.S. and European proposal for a full, 30-day ceasefire, but Putin has effectively rejected it by imposing far-reaching conditions.
Meantime, Russian forces are preparing a fresh military offensive, Ukrainian government and Western military analysts say.

Russia facing more sanctions after no ceasefire reached: EU
Russia’s invasion has killed more than 12,000 Ukrainian civilians, the U.N. says, and razed towns and villages. Tens of thousands of Ukrainian soldiers have died, and likely a larger number of Russian troops, officials and analysts say.

On the battlefield, one Ukrainian soldier said he wasn’t hopeful that the talks would bring a swift end to the war.
“I don’t think they will agree on anything concrete, because summer is the best time for war,” he said, using only the call sign “Corsair,” in keeping with the rules of the Ukrainian military. “The enemy is trying to constantly escalate the situation.”

But he told The Associated Press that many of his fellow soldiers “believe that by the end of the year there will be peace, albeit an unstable one, but peace.”
A Friday morning drone attack on the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kupiansk killed a 55-year-old woman and wounded four men, Oleh Syniehubov, head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, said. All the victims worked for a municipal utility.
After Putin didn’t take up Zelenskyy’s challenge to sit down with him in the Turkish capital on Thursday, the Ukrainian president accused Moscow of not making a serious effort to end the war by sending a low-level negotiating team that he described as “a theater prop.”
Even so, Zelenskyy said that he was sending a team headed by his defense minister to Friday’s meeting in Istanbul. That would show Trump that Ukraine is determined to press ahead with peace efforts despite Russian foot-dragging, Zelenskyy said, amid intense diplomatic maneuvering by Kyiv and Moscow.

The Russian delegation also includes three other senior officials, the Kremlin said. Putin also appointed four lower-level officials as “experts” for the talks.
A flurry of diplomatic activity in Istanbul
A flurry of diplomatic activity took place in Istanbul before the talks.
Ukrainian officials held an early-morning meeting with national security advisers from the United States, France, Germany and the United Kingdom to coordinate positions, a senior Ukrainian official told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.
The U.S. team was led by retired Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg, Trump’s special envoy to Ukraine and Russia, while Umerov and presidential office chief Andriy Yermak represented Ukraine, the official said.
A three-way meeting between Turkey, the U.S. and Ukraine also took place, Turkish Foreign Ministry officials said. The U.S. side included Secretary of State Marco Rubio as well as Kellogg.

Rubio on Thursday said he didn’t foresee major developments in Istanbul.
“We don’t have high expectations of what will happen tomorrow. And frankly, at this point, I think it’s abundantly clear that the only way we’re going to have a breakthrough here is between President Trump and President Putin,” Rubio told reporters Thursday in Antalya, Turkey.
Zelenskyy, meantime, flew to Albania to attend a meeting Friday of the leaders of 47 European countries to discuss security, defense and democratic standards against the backdrop of the war.

The Gears of War movie isn’t just a rumor or a possibility anymore
David Leitch may not have officially signed on yet, but all indications point toward him taking the director’s chair. A former stuntman and co-director of John Wick, Leitch has become known for slick, choreographed action in his movies. His recent works on movies like The Fall Guy and Bullet Train have shown his ability to make action scenes with a style that we’ve sorely missed.

Given his style of filmmaking, His involvement aligns perfectly with the gritty, boots-on-the-ground military action that defines Gears of War. His wife and producing partner, Kelly McCormick, is also on board, with the couple set to produce through their 87North banner. Of course, as you’d expect, the project will also be worked on alongside The Coalition, the studio behind the games.
The script is being written by Jon Spaihts, whose writing credits include Doctor Strange and Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Dune. Known for his work on large-scale science fiction epics, Spaihts brings the kind of narrative weight needed to do justice to Gears of War’s lore.
Dave Bautista wants Netflix to move forward with their ‘GEARS OF WAR’ movie.

Despite the promising creative team, production isn’t expected to begin immediately. Leitch is currently preparing to direct How to Rob a Bank, a heist film for Amazon MGM starring Nicholas Hoult and Anna Sawai. This means Gears of War may still be a couple of years away from hitting screens.
So, who’s going to play Marcus Fenix in the movie?

Now we have to ask the big question. Who’s going to be in this movie? And who will play Marcus Fenix, the main protagonist? Well, if you haven’t heard, Wrestler-turned-actor Dave Bautista has been publicly talking about wanting the role for years. In fact, Bautista once revealed he turned down a role in Fast & Furious just to pitch himself as Marcus to Universal.
Netflix is clearly banking on the current popularity of video game adaptations. With hits like The Last of Us, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and Fallout, the bad reputation that the genre previously had is barely noticeable anymore. And if Netflix is actually committed to bringing us a faithful adaptation, then we can share their hopes.
As it stands, the Gears of War movie still doesn’t have a release window, and we have no announced cast. But with David Leitch, Jon Spaihts, and The Coalition involved, Netflix has all the tools to do justice to one of the most beloved franchises in gaming history.

How digital identity will empower people and drive economic growth
How digital identity will empower people and drive economic growth
The government announcement on 14 May about how it sees the future of the digital identity market operating means the uncertainty of the last few months is over.
Investors had stopped investing and several identity service providers (IDSPs) have had to put their plans on hold waiting for this day. Those barriers have now been lifted.
IDSPs are working though what the government wallet means for them and the disruptive change it will bring to the market. Business cases are being re-examined.
The good news is that the 14 May meeting promises to mark a welcome shift in government and identity industry relations. There is understanding and recognition that the secretary of state’s decision to press ahead with announcing the Gov.*** Wallet in January was a bold and reasonable one to make with the information he had available.
There is also understanding and recognition by the secretary of state, Peter Kyle, of the unintended consequence of that decision on industry.
Learning from experience
Identity is like time – it seems simple until you realise it’s all relative. It’s that complexity that government and industry now need to wrestle with together. The consensus is that both sides can learn from the experience and build forward together with more certainty.
Let’s take a moment to consider the future this new partnership can unlock. The government’s digital wallet and credentials can be likened to the role of the Bank of England in the financial system – it acts as the identity provider of last resort.
Relying parties, such as retailers, can’t directly access what’s inside someone’s wallet – instead, they must go through a registered digital verification service (DVS). Think of these organisations as the retail banks of the identity ecosystem, with the Office for Digital Identity and Attributes (OfDIA) playing a role similar to the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).
Of course, unlike the Bank of England or the FCA, neither the government wallet nor OfDIA are independent – but perhaps that’s a question for the next generation to solve.
The point is this: the banking system offers a useful role model for how the identity and personal data market could evolve – where a person’s data, like their money, is something they own, store securely, and choose to share through trusted intermediaries.
And here’s the other exciting thing about that analogy. The *** is the global powerhouse in financial and regulatory technology (fintech and regtech) – streets ahead of what’s brewing in Silicon Valley. We sometimes forget that. This is not just hype – it’s rooted in the real-world muscle of London, still the financial capital of the world. It’s this deep, practical, and highly specialised expertise – built in the crucible of high-trust, high-stakes finance – that’s now being unlocked for something new: a sovereign identity and personal data market.
Data economy
While the big tech giants have the global reach to roll out platforms at scale, it’s the *** that holds the keys to making the data economy actually work – in a way that fits with western democratic values. Not big tech surveillance. Not top-down state control. But something more balanced. More human. More trusted.
That’s the real prize this new government partnership holds – not just for the digital identity sector, but for the future of the *** economy. A chance to lead the world once again – this time, in building the data layer of democracy.
Now comes the hard part. For the past two decades, working in digital identity in the *** was often a lonely road – misunderstood, underfunded, and sometimes even ridiculed. Yet a small group of pioneers kept the flag flying, laying the groundwork that has now led to the creation of OfDIA – a regulatory framework that finally unlocks the innovative potential of the private sector.
With the starting gun fired, identity is now going mainstream. A new wave of ideas – powered by trusted digital credentials – is about to flood the market. But identity alone won’t be enough to survive, let alone thrive. What matters now is value.
Take banking. Customer-owned personal data stores – shared voluntarily, under their control – are a far richer source of information than anything a credit reference agency can offer. If banks became certified under the Digital Identity and Attributes Trust Framework (DIATF) and the government added a domestic PEP (politically exposed persons) flag to the wallet, they could cut compliance costs by millions.
The same goes for major recruiters, NHS trusts, and universities. With DBS certificates, HM Revenue & Customs data, qualifications, and right-to-work credentials in the wallet, time-to-hire and onboarding costs could be dramatically reduced – if these institutions become DVS certified.
Ambitious goals
This isn’t evolution. It’s disruption. Supply chains will shift. Whole new categories of value-added identity services will emerge. Startups will rush in. Competition will intensify. And current identity providers? They’ll need to level up – fast – or risk being left behind.
Meanwhile, in the short term, the tasks ahead are a bit messy and incomplete – but necessary.
First, the government has set an ambitious goal – to introduce the public to digital ID through age verification for alcohol sales by Christmas. It’s a bold target, and one we should support – but with less than six months to go, it’s a tall order. Proof of concepts will be ready, but full-scale roll-out? Unlikely. Still, the urgency is welcome.
Even if we miss the mark, it pushes the whole system forward and identity providers will have to forge new collaborations and ways of working they have not had to consider before.
More importantly, this initiative can serve a greater purpose – unlocking regulatory resistance to digital identity across the wider economy.
Right now, regulators aren’t aligned, and until they are, in-house compliance teams have no choice but to block innovation. But once the rules change, the brakes come off. Compliance professionals can become allies of change, working with technologists to enable business, not hold it back.
And when that alignment happens – regulators, compliance, and tech all pulling in the same direction – the stage is set for the real magic. The entrepreneurs, the builders, the investors – with government setting the guardrails and the market delivering the innovation, the future won’t just be an upgrade – it’ll be a transformation.
Communication, education, and outreach programmes can transform every community – even those post-industrial regions that have been left behind. There should be no reason why people have to leave their hometowns to seek work and opportunity. We can find new and diverse ways of working once we know who we all are.
Watershed moment
In conclusion, 14 May could well be remembered as a watershed moment – not just for government and the identity industry, but for the future of the *** economy. And that’s before we even begin to explore the power of person-centric, controlled artificial intelligence (AI) – AI that serves individual creators, not big tech monopolies.
So, hats off to Peter Kyle for his bold decisions and refreshing honesty. This is a moment that demands goodwill and open collaboration. Government and industry must move as one – the stakes are too high for division. This isn’t just about digital identity. It’s about sovereignty. It’s about dignity and rebuilding trust in an age of data.
If we get this right in the ***, we won’t just be rebuilding the country and creating economic growth. We’ll empower people. We’ll unlock opportunity. And we’ll show the world how democracy can evolve – and thrive – in the digital era.
The game is now well and truly on. And everything’s to play for. Let’s rise to meet it.
David Crack is chair of the Association of Digital Verification Professionals, a trade body representing companies involved in the electronic validation of documents and digital identities.
