Thaddeus Mosley Shapes Universes in Wood
Thaddeus Mosley Shapes Universes in Wood
The first sculpture in Thaddeus Mosley’s spectacular show “Proximity” is an assembly of four roughly wishbone-shaped pieces of carved walnut that stands 6 ½ feet tall. He calls it “Arboreal Choreography.” Seen from the gallery’s front door it does indeed bring to mind a well-dressed dancer in a self-conscious pose, thumbs in braces, one toe raised. From the end of a nearby bench, though, it becomes a complex jungle of shadows, creases, cracks and reinforcements, with brown and off-white tones so rich and various that you’d almost think he painted them on. As you pass alongside, it all becomes something else again.
Mosley, who was born in 1926, has also worked in assemblage, sourcing miscellaneous objects from a Pittsburgh junkyard owned by Andy Warhol’s brother; one piece in the current show is mounted on a found lamp stand. In the past few years he’s also taken up casting, and a group of his recent bronzes will soon be installed in City Hall Park in Manhattan. But since he started making sculpture in Pittsburgh in the 1950s, the Pennsylvania native has chiefly worked with hardwood, enlisting every last bit of its natural aesthetic splendor, as Noguchi did for stone.
Many of the pieces in “Proximity” express more singular thoughts than “Arboreal Choreography.” There are stools, wooden embraces, and several notched spirals that culminate in a majestic, nine-foot-tall column topped by a jaunty half pipe. Two sculptures made of locust wood are so shiny and yellow that they call to mind glazed French confections, at least for the moment. (Exposure to the air will eventually turn them brown.) It’s not that any of these things are simple — you could almost see “Curvilinear Reach” in a graduate-level math course — just that they’re easily taken in as wholes. Still, even in the most straightforward pieces, Mosley weaves together heady pairs of opposites: stillness and motion, curves and straight edges, intimacy and grandeur, conscious intention and organic growth.
“Sonic X24” leans back like a debonair narwhal, and in “Crossroads,” a blade-shaped length of walnut notches a semicircular piece that evokes a slice of melon. In “Flight Form,” a rounded, hollow piece of dark brown walnut sits horizontally atop a ballet-toe-shaped column.
Viewed from the middle of the room, it brings to mind a flayed beef carcass of the kind that Chaim Soutine liked to paint, a bulging, numinous stand-in for the universe itself. But Mosley ends his universe with 12 square projections, as if to impose some human order and decision onto the natural world. From the other side the same form reveals a crackling cavity full of esoteric mystery.

King Charles ‘on the better side’ of ******* journey
King Charles ‘on the better side’ of ******* journey
King Charles is “on the better side” of his ******* journey.
The 76-year-old monarch – who has been receiving regular treatment after being diagnosed with an undisclosed form of the disease in 2024 – spoke to florist Safeena Khan about his health, during a visit to Bradford to celebrate its status as the ***’s City of Culture.
Khan told MailOnline: “He asked me how I was, and I asked him how he was. There was some pleasantries towards the end, but it was a lovely conversation.”
The florist added that Charles gave her a “thumbs up” when she asked about his health and told her: “I’d like to think I’m on the better side (of my ******* journey)”.
During a recent Buckingham Palace garden party, Charles advocated for the benefits of eating well amid ******* treatment.
The monarch spoke with Stamford Collis, 22, about the student’s own experiences of battling ******* at the recent event and Stamford told the Daily Telegraph newspaper: “He was asking me about the treatment I have starting in June and spoke to me about food and diet. He also asked me if I had undergone radiation treatment, which I had earlier this year.”
The publication reports the king was heard to say: “It’s sometimes about the diet and what you eat. It can help.”
This comes after Charles son, Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, recently claimed he doesn’t “know how much longer my father has”.
Speaking about their strained relationship, amid his decision to quit as a senior royal and move to California with his wife Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, and their family, Harry told the BBC: “There have been so many disagreements, differences between me and some of my family this current situation that has been now ongoing for five years with regards to human life and safety is the sticking point it is the only thing that’s left.
“Of course, some members of my family will never forgive me for writing a book, of course they will never forgive me for lots of things.
“But you know there is, I would love reconciliation with my family there’s no point in continuing to fight anymore, as I said life is precious. I don’t know how much longer my father has, he won’t speak to me because of this security stuff but it would be nice to reconcile.”

Sheriff says there are indications 10 escapees from New Orleans jail had inside help
Sheriff says there are indications 10 escapees from New Orleans jail had inside help
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Ten men broke out of a New Orleans jail Friday in an audacious overnight escape by fleeing through a hole behind a toilet and scaling a wall, setting off an urgent manhunt to arrest the fugitives.
Nine of the escapees, which include suspects charged with *******, remain on the lam following the breakout that the local sheriff says may have been aided by members within the department.
A photograph obtained by The Associated Press from law enforcement shows the opening behind a toilet in a cell that the men escaped through. Above the hole are scrawled messages that include “To Easy LoL” with an arrow pointing at the gap.
The absence of the 10 men, who also utilized facility deficiencies that officials have long complained about in their escape, went unnoticed for hours. It was not until a routine morning headcount, more than seven hours after the men fled the facility, that law enforcement learned of the escape.
Soon after, one of the fugitives, Kendall Myles, 20, was apprehended after a brief foot chase through the French Quarter. He had previously escaped twice from juvenile detention centers.
Sheriff blames ‘defective locks’ and possibly inside help
Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson said the men were able to get out of the Orleans Justice Center because of “defective locks.” Hutson said she has continuously raised concerns about the locks to officials and, as recently as this week, advocated for money to fix the ailing infrastructure.
Hutson said there are indications that people inside her department helped the fugitives escape.
“We do acknowledge there is no way people can get out of this facility without there being some type of lapse in security,” Hutson said of the jail, where she says 1,400 people are being held. “It’s almost impossible, not completely, but almost impossible for anybody to get out of this facility without help.”
Hutson said the 10 men “breached” a wall behind a toilet around 1 a.m. and that surveillance footage shows the men exiting through a loading dock door, scaling a wall and running across an interstate.
Authorities did not notice the men were missing until 8:30 a.m. Authorities initially said 11 had escaped, but at a Friday afternoon news conference said one man thought to have escaped was in a different cell.
Who are the fugitives?
The escapees range from 19 years old to 42. Most of the men are in their 20s.
One of the fugitives, Derrick Groves, was convicted on two charges of second-degree ******* and two charges of attempted second-degree ******* last year for his role in the 2018 Mardi Gras Day shootings of two men. He also faces a charge of battery against a correctional facility employee, court records show. In a press release, law enforcement warned that the fugitive may attempt to locate witnesses in the ******* trial.
Another escapee, Corey Boyd, had pled not guilty to a pending second-degree ******* charge.
Hutson said the police department is actively working with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to search for the fugitives.
Investigators are focusing on an opening inside a cell through which at least one escapee is believed to have broke out into a maintenance corridor, according to one current and one former law enforcement official who were not authorized to discuss the ongoing investigation and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.
“That’s how they escaped,” the current official said, adding investigators were reviewing surveillance footage that captured the jailbreak.
A former law enforcement official who worked in the jail for several years said such a small square opening would typically be covered by a sink and toilet that may have been removed in this case.
Officials use facial recognition to find one fugitive
Police relied on facial recognition technology to identify and capture one fugitive, said Bryan LaGarde, executive director of Project NOLA, a nonprofit operating more than 5,000 cameras around New Orleans. His organization, which partners with Louisiana authorities, received the list of escapees and entered their images into the system — finding two within the French Quarter in minutes.
“When we saw them, they were wearing street clothes. They were walking openly in the street. They were keeping their heads down and checking over their shoulder.” LaGarde said, explaining that the other fugitive walked out of sight of the cameras.
Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill called the escape “beyond unacceptable” and said local authorities had waited too long to inform the public.
“Someone clearly dropped the ball and there’s no excuse for this,” Murrill said in an emailed statement. “My office will do whatever it takes to determine how this happened and make sure that it won’t happen again.”
New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said her agency has put “a full court effort” to respond to the escape and are working with the FBI and U.S. marshals.
Officers were focused on identifying and providing protection for people who may have testified in their cases or may be in danger. One family has been “removed” from their home, Kirkpatrick said.
“If there is anyone helping or harboring these escapees, you will be charged,” Kirkpatrick added.
Turmoil at New Orleans’ jail
The escape follows years of turmoil surrounding New Orleans’ jail, which for more than a decade has been subject to federal monitoring and a consent decree intended to improve conditions.
Security problems and violence persisted even after the city opened the Orleans Justice Center in 2015, replacing the decaying Orleans Parish Prison, which had seen its own string of escapes and dozens of in-custody deaths.
A federal judge declared in 2013 that the lockup had left an “indelible stain on the community” and festered into an unconstitutional setting for people incarcerated there.
Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson said staff is “stretched thin” at the facility, which is around 60% staffed. She said the facility, which abuts an interstate, is currently holding 1,400 people.

Moody’s downgrades US credit rating, citing rising debt
Moody’s downgrades US credit rating, citing rising debt
Moody’s has downgraded its credit rating of the United States by a notch to “Aa1” from “Aaa”, citing rising debt and interest “that are significantly higher than similarly rated sovereigns”.
The rating agency had been the last among major ratings agencies to keep a top, triple-A rating for US sovereign debt, though it had lowered its outlook in late 2023 due to wider fiscal deficit and higher interest payments.
“Successive US administrations and Congress have failed to agree on measures to reverse the trend of large annual fiscal deficits and growing interest costs,” Moody’s said on Friday, as it changed its outlook on the US to “stable” from “negative”.
Since his return to the White House on January 20, President Donald Trump has pledged to balance the US budget while his Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, has repeatedly said the current administration aims to lower US government funding costs.
The administration’s mix of revenue-generating tariffs and spending cuts through Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency have highlighted a keen awareness of the risks posed by mounting government debt, which, if unchecked, could trigger a bond market rout and hinder the administration’s ability to pursue its agenda.
The downgrade comes as Trump’s sweeping tax bill failed to clear a key procedural hurdle on Friday, as hardline Republicans demanding deeper spending cuts blocked the measure in a rare political setback for the Republican president in Congress.
“We do not believe that material multi-year reductions in mandatory spending and deficits will result from current fiscal proposals under consideration,” Moody’s said, while forecasting federal debt burden to rise to about 134 per cent of GDP by 2035, compared with 98 per cent in 2024.
The cut follows a downgrade by rival Fitch, which in August 2023 also cut the US sovereign rating by one notch, citing expected fiscal deterioration and repeated down-to-the-wire debt ceiling negotiations that threaten the government’s ability to pay its bills.

Does Warren Buffett Know Something That Wall Street Doesn’t? Berkshire Hathaway Is Pounding the Table On a Stock That Has Struggled.
Does Warren Buffett Know Something That Wall Street Doesn’t? Berkshire Hathaway Is Pounding the Table On a Stock That Has Struggled.
Berkshire Hathaway’s latest 13F filing shows that in Q1, it significantly raised its stake in Constellation Brands — a stock that has not fared well over the last five years.
Berkshire CEO Warren Buffett is arguably the greatest value investor of all time.
This move appears to be following a playbook that Buffett and Berkshire have used many times.
10 stocks we like better than Constellation Brands ›
While Warren Buffett has been willing to adapt to changes in the stock market, he will always at his core be a value investor. Value investing is based on a simple-sounding premise: Buy stocks that are trading at less than their intrinsic value.
Yet in practice, value investing is incredibly difficult. Investors need to determine what a company’s intrinsic value really is, then game out what kind of valuation multiples the market might assign it if the company can attain that value. Often, investments that look like value stocks turn out to be value traps. In other cases, it can take a long time for the market to notice that it has been underpricing a company.
Buffett is arguably the best value investor of all time, so when his company, Berkshire Hathaway purchases a stock, the market pays attention. Recently, the billionaire has been pounding the table on a stock that has been struggling for a few years. Does Buffett know something that Wall Street doesn’t?
In the fourth quarter of 2024, Buffett and his team at Berkshire initiated a position in Constellation Brands (NYSE: STZ) — a major purveyor of premium beer, wine, and spirits — purchasing more than 5.6 million shares valued at about $1.2 billion. In the first quarter of 2025, Berkshire’s recent filings from the Securities and Exchange Commission reveal, the conglomerate increased that position by 114%.
Constellation hasn’t performed well in recent years. The stock is down more than 14% this year and has only risen about 20% over the last five years (as of May 15), significantly underperforming the broader market.
Constellation owns popular beer brands like Modelo, Corona Extra, and Pacifico, as well as popular wine brands like Kim Crawford’s and liquor companies like Casa Noble Tequila.
The traditional alcohol space has been facing challenging times of late, as consumers are drinking less, choosing lower-priced brands, and turning to healthier alternatives. Meanwhile, today’s younger adults, as a cohort, are less apt to drink than the generations that came before them. As a result, alcohol sales across the board have struggled in recent years.
Story Continues
And lately, investors have been worried about the impact Constellation faces from President Donald Trump’s tariffs. Earlier this year, Trump imposed steep tariffs on Mexico, from which Constellation imports much of its beer. Trump has also slapped a 25% tariff on aluminum — the material beer cans are made from.
The combination of all those added costs and headwinds led Constellation management to lower its guidance in early April. After generating adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $13.78 in its fiscal 2025 (which ended Feb. 28), management guided for EPS of only $12.75 at the midpoint of its range for fiscal 2026, and also forecast lower sales. Trump has delayed imposing many of his threatened tariffs on Mexico; however, the 25% aluminum tariff is in effect.
Constellation has many attributes that Buffett likes. The company owns some of the most iconic beer brands in the world. Corona Extra and Modelo likely have staying power and therefore some level of pricing power. Additionally, this isn’t the first time Buffett and his team have invested in what some might consider an antiquated industry.
Berkshire owns a lot of energy assets and has now taken huge stakes in large U.S. oil and natural gas producers Occidental Petroleum and Chevron. Buffett might be thinking that the U.S. and the world will remain a lot more dependent on natural gas and oil than people think, and that energy from greener sources simply may not be enough to meet demand. Or perhaps he thinks these companies have the resources to move into alternative energy sectors and become leaders there, too.
Buffett could be thinking something similar about the alcohol sector. Sure, sales may have slowed in recent years, but at the end of the day, consumers will likely keep drinking, and Constellation has also started investing in non-alcoholic beverages.
At the current share price, the company’s dividend has a yield topping 2% and generates solid free cash flow (FCF), with a trailing 12-month FCF yield of 5.6%. Constellation is also planning to repurchase more shares and is guiding for $6 billion to $8 billion of FCF generation from fiscal 2026 through fiscal 2028. With the stock trading at around 15 times expected forward earnings, Buffett and his team clearly think it’s too cheap to ignore.

Donald Trump, Taylor Swift feud: President says singer ‘not hot’, tells Bruce Springsteen to keep ‘mouth shut’
Donald Trump, Taylor Swift feud: President says singer ‘not hot’, tells Bruce Springsteen to keep ‘mouth shut’
US President Donald Trump has added fuel to his unusual beef with music superstar Taylor Swift, saying she is no longer “hot”, while also lashing out at iconic singer Bruce Springsteen, calling him a “dried out prune”.
The feud has somewhat of an unusual backstory.
During Mr Trump’s presidential campaign in 2024, he posted AI generated images of Taylor Swift and and added comments and hashtags including “Swifties for Trump”.
Shortly after the AI images were shared, videos started to surface of Mr Trump’s supporters discussing how Swift was a fan of the president, seemingly unaware that there was actually no support.
Shortly after, almost immediately after the first debate between former Vice President Kamala Harris and Mr Trump, Swift spoke out and endorsed the Democrat presidential nominee.
“Like many of you, I watched the debate tonight,” the singer wrote before asking her followers to do their research before deciding who to vote for.
“Recently I was made aware that AI of ‘me’ falsely endorsing Donald Trump’s presidential run was posted to his site.
“It really conjured up my fears around AI, and the dangers of spreading misinformation. It brought me to the conclusion that I need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election as a voter.
“The simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth.“I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election.
“I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos.”

That didn’t sit well with Mr Trump, who took to social media, using capital letters to say “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!”
Mr Trump later said that Swift would “pay the price” for sharing her Democrat views.
After going somewhat quiet on the feud, Mr Trump has reopened it claiming Swift is no longer “hot”, claiming responsibility for her, in his opinion, demise.
“Has anyone noticed that, since I said ‘I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT,’ she’s no longer “HOT?” Mr Trump wrote on Truth Social.
It wasn’t just Swift that Mr Trump wanted to call out through, also hitting out at US singer Bruce Springsteen.
“I see that highly overrated Bruce Springsteen goes to a foreign country to speak badly about the President of the United States,” Mr Trump wrote in a second post.
“Never liked him, never liked his music, or his radical left politics and, importantly, he’s not a talented guy — just a pushy, obnoxious JERK, who fervently supported crooked Joe Biden, a mentally incompetent FOOL, and our WORST EVER President, who came close to destroying our country.
“If I wasn’t elected, it would have been GONE by now!
“Sleepy Joe didn’t have a clue as to what he was doing, but Springsteen is ‘dumb as a rock,’ and couldn’t see what was going on, or could he (which is even worse!)?
“This dried out ‘prune’ of a rocker (his skin is all atrophied!) ought to KEEP HIS MOUTH SHUT until he gets back into the country, that’s just ‘standard fare’.
“Then we’ll all see how it goes for him!”
Mr Trump’s post comes after Springsteen said the US President was “unfit for office”.
“In my home, the America I love — the America I’ve written about that has been a beacon of hope and liberty for 250 years — is currently in the hands of a corrupt, incompetent and treasonous administration,” he said at a concert in Manchester, ***.

Coinbase’s dizzying week before S&P 500 debut: What happened?
Coinbase’s dizzying week before S&P 500 debut: What happened?
00:00 Speaker A
Wanna take a look here at shares of Coinbase this week, as it began with the platform reaching a major milestone, announcing its addition to the S&P 500. But then, things took a turn for the worst yesterday when the company disclosed a significant cyber security breach, confirmed an ongoing SEC investigation regarding its past user metrics. Joining us now to break it all down, the latest is what he calls coins, no good, very bad day. That would be Mark Palmer, Benchmark Company managing director, senior research analyst of Fintech and digital assets. Uh, Mark, it’s good to see you. So there is a lot to break down here, Mark. All right, so they’re added to the SPX. That’s a big achievement. It’s a big milestone, but then, Mark, we have this headline-making hack. Let’s maybe start there with the hack. I mean, your takeaways from that, Mark. How concerned should investors be about that?
01:34 Mark Palmer
Yes. Uh, well, first of all, thanks very much for having me on. You know, the situation with Coinbase, uh, is really something of a one-off. You know, what we’re talking about are, uh, consultants that were hired by the company, uh, for, uh, customer service, uh, abroad. And, uh, the cyber hackers, uh, in this case, uh, got a hold of these people and bribed them to provide them with access to Coinbase’s platform. Uh, at which point they were able to access, uh, a lot of different materials about customers’ backgrounds, but importantly, none of the login information, none of the, the private keys associated, uh, with crypto, uh, and, um, you know, none of the, um, uh, access to customer wallets. So, as a consequence of this, um, you know, there were no, uh, actual, um, you know, big amounts of money that were lifted off the platform, as you typically will see, uh, with some of these hacking incidents. With that said, um, you know, this is, it’s always a concern when an exchange has a breach. Um, but management moved quickly. Uh, they came out with all of the information about what had happened, um, as fully as they could, uh, and they had a remediation plan in place, uh, which, uh, would ultimately help to compensate any of those who are impacted by this, um, you know, to the tune of between $180 and $400 million. Uh, so it’s a bizarre story, uh, but, uh, it really didn’t have anything to do, uh, with the various, uh, cyber security, uh, protection measures, uh, that the company has in place. This was really, uh, more of the real world type of, uh, incident that we’re talking about here.

City are preparing for their third straight FA Cup final, and they have also travelled to Wembley for seven consecutive semi-finals in the competition, which Guardiola called a “huge achievement”.
This season was the first time during that sequence in which City have played their FA Cup semi-final on a Sunday.
In the previous six campaigns, they always had a Champions League or Premier League fixture on the preceding Wednesday.

Guardiola said: “We play all the time quarter-finals and semi-finals, quarter-finals and semi-finals on a Wednesday away. We play [FA Cup] semi-finals on a Saturday but this time on a Sunday and we didn’t need that extra day.”
The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss suggested his side have been chosen to play FA Cup semi-finals on a Saturday so often because broadcasters feel there are “more followers” for the Sunday game, with Guardiola saying: “They are tired to see us.”
The next few days will define City’s season in terms of whether they pick up any major silverware and where they lie in their battle to qualify for the Champions League next season.
It is why Guardiola thinks there should have been a greater willingness to nudge back City’s game after the demands of a cup final.
Guardiola added: “We have been fighting against this situation for nine years – every single season. Nothing [happens]. [We are told] ‘That is the deal, go’.
“We are going to play Tuesday night against an intense, physical, direct and powerful team in the Premier League like Bournemouth who are playing to qualify for the Europa Conference League. We have to deal with that.
“What I am saying, they are playing Aston Villa v Tottenham on a Friday night, this is what they should do when it is possible. It doesn’t change much for us playing a Tuesday or Wednesday, but they decide and we will play here on Tuesday with our people.”

Hospital tells family brain-dead Georgia woman must carry fetus to birth because of abortion ban
Hospital tells family brain-dead Georgia woman must carry fetus to birth because of abortion ban
A pregnant woman in Georgia who was declared brain dead after a medical emergency has been on life support for three months to let the fetus grow enough to be delivered, a move her family says a hospital told them was required under the state’s strict anti-abortion law.
With her due date still more than three months away, it could be one of the longest such pregnancies. Her family is upset that Georgia’s law, which restricts abortion once cardiac activity is detected, doesn’t allow relatives to have a say in whether a pregnant woman is kept on life support.
Georgia’s “heartbeat law” is among the restrictive abortion statutes that have been put in place in many conservative states since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade three years ago.
Adriana Smith, a 30-year-old mother and nurse, was declared brain-dead – meaning she is legally dead – in February, her mother, April Newkirk, told Atlanta TV station WXIA.
Newkirk said her daughter had intense headaches more than three months ago and went to Atlanta’s Northside Hospital, where she received medication and was released. The next morning, her boyfriend woke to her gasping for air and called 911. Emory University Hospital determined she had blood clots in her brain and she was declared brain-dead.
Newkirk said Smith is now 21 weeks pregnant. Removing breathing tubes and other life-saving devices would likely kill the fetus.
A spokesperson for Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr said in a statement to CBS News on Friday, “There is nothing in the LIFE Act that requires medical professionals to keep a woman on life support after brain death.”
“Removing life support is not an action ‘with the purpose to terminate a pregnancy,'” the spokesperson said, quoting part of the law.
Gov. Brian Kemp’s office declined to comment on Smith’s case and referred CBS News to the statement from the attorney general’s spokesperson.
Northside did not respond to a request for comment on Thursday. Emory Healthcare said it could not comment on an individual case because of privacy rules, but released a statement saying it “uses consensus from clinical experts, medical literature, and legal guidance to support our providers as they make individualized treatment recommendations in compliance with Georgia’s abortion laws and all other applicable laws. Our top priorities continue to be the safety and well-being of the patients we serve.”
Smith’s family says Emory doctors have told them they are not allowed to stop or remove the devices that are keeping her breathing because state law bans abortion after cardiac activity can be detected — generally around six weeks into pregnancy.
The law was adopted in 2019 but not enforced until after Roe v. Wade was overturned in the 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization ruling, opening the door to state abortion bans. Twelve states are enforcing bans on abortion at all stages of pregnancy and three others have bans like Georgia’s that kick in after about six weeks.
Like the others, Georgia’s ban includes an exception if an abortion is necessary to maintain the woman’s life. Those exceptions have been at the heart of legal and political questions, including a major Texas Supreme Court ruling last year that found the ban there applies even when there are major pregnancy complications.
Smith’s family, including her five-year-old son, still visit her in the hospital.
Newkirk told WXIA that doctors told the family that the fetus has fluid on the brain and that they’re concerned about his health.
“She’s pregnant with my grandson. But he may be blind, may not be able to walk, may not survive once he’s born,” Newkirk said. She has not said whether the family wants Smith removed from life support.
Monica Simpson, executive director of SisterSong, the lead plaintiff in a lawsuit challenging Georgia’s abortion law, said the situation is problematic.
“Her family deserved the right to have decision-making power about her medical decisions,” Simpson said in a statement. “Instead, they have endured over 90 days of retraumatization, expensive medical costs, and the cruelty of being unable to resolve and move toward healing.”
Lois Shepherd, a bioethicist and law professor at the University of Virginia, said she does not believe life support is legally required in this case.
But she said whether a state could insist that Smith remains on life support is uncertain since the overturning of Roe, which found that fetuses do not have the rights of people.
“Pre-Dobbs, a fetus didn’t have any rights,” Shepherd said. “And the state’s interest in fetal life could not be so strong as to overcome other important rights, but now we don’t know.”
The situation echoes a case in Texas more than a decade ago when a brain-dead woman was kept on life support for about two months because she was pregnant. A judge eventually ruled that the hospital was misapplying state law, and life support was removed.
Brain death in pregnancy is rare. Even rarer still are cases in which doctors aim to prolong the pregnancy after a woman is declared brain-dead.
“It’s a very complex situation, obviously, not only ethically but also medically,” said Dr. Vincenzo Berghella, director of maternal fetal medicine at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia.
A 2021 review that Berghella co-authored scoured medical literature going back decades for cases in which doctors declared a woman brain-dead and aimed to prolong her pregnancy. It found 35.
Of those, 27 resulted in a live birth, the majority either immediately declared healthy or with normal follow-up tests. But Berghella also cautioned that the Georgia case was much more difficult because the pregnancy was less far along when the woman was declared brain dead. In the 35 cases he studied, doctors were able to prolong the pregnancy by an average of just seven weeks before complications forced them to intervene.
“It’s just hard to keep the mother out of infection, out of cardiac failure,” he said.
Berghella also found a case from Germany that resulted in a live birth when the woman was declared brain dead at nine weeks of pregnancy – about as far along as Smith was when she died.
Georgia’s law confers personhood on a fetus. Those who favor personhood say fertilized eggs, embryos and fetuses should be considered people with the same rights as those already born.
Georgia state Sen. Ed Setzler, a Republican who sponsored the 2019 law, said he supported Emory’s interpretation.
“I think it is completely appropriate that the hospital do what they can to save the life of the child,” Setzler said. “I think this is an unusual circumstance, but I think it highlights the value of innocent human life. I think the hospital is acting appropriately.”
Setzler said he believes it is sometimes acceptable to remove life support from someone who is brain dead, but that the law is “an appropriate check” because the mother is pregnant. He said Smith’s relatives have “good choices,” including keeping the child or offering it for adoption.
Georgia’s abortion ban has been in the spotlight before.
Last year, ProPublica reported that two Georgia women died after they did not get proper medical treatment for complications from taking abortion pills. The stories of Amber Thurman and Candi Miller entered into the presidential race, with Democrat Kamala Harris saying the deaths were the result of the abortion bans that went into effect in Georgia and elsewhere after Dobbs.

Allrounder Roston Chase named new Windies Test captain
Allrounder Roston Chase named new Windies Test captain
Allrounder Roston Chase has been named West Indies Test captain even though he hasn’t played a Test in more than two years.
The 33-year-old Chase replaces 32-year-old Kraigg Brathwaite, who resigned from the job in March after three years.
Chase will lead the Windies in three home Tests against Australia in June and July. The first Test in Bridgetown on Chase’s home island of Barbados will also be his 50th since his Test debut in 2016.
The 1.96-metre off-spinner has taken 85 wickets at 46, and as a middle-order bat has scored more than 2,200 runs at 26, including five hundreds.
His best bowling figures was 8-60 against England in the second innings of a 381-run win in 2019 at his Bridgetown home ground.
Chase was shortlisted for the captaincy with John Campbell, Tevin Imlach, Joshua Da Silva, Justin Greaves and Jomel Warrican. Shai Hope, the one-day and Twenty20 captain, declined to be considered.
West Indies officials said they conducted detailed assessments of tactical approach, leadership style, communication skills and behaviour before choosing Chase.
“Our new captain has earned the respect of his peers, understands the responsibility that comes with the role, and has shown the leadership qualities we need to take this team forward,” coach Daren Sammy said in a statement.
“I urge fans across the region to rally behind him – we’re building something special.”

I don’t understand where this is coming from, they act like they failed in that department with the first game and that it was a massive issue for them when it reality they did so well on it a lot of Japanese devs praised it.
Are they scared western journalists are going to do the same thing they did for the first game where they don’t outright say it but they give off the impression there’s some sort of racist undertones with a game set in Japan being made by Western developers.

Moody’s strips U.S. government of top credit rating, citing Washington’s failure to rein in debt
Moody’s strips U.S. government of top credit rating, citing Washington’s failure to rein in debt
WASHINGTON (AP) — Moody’s Ratings stripped the U.S. government of its top credit rating Friday, citing successive governments’ failure to stop a rising tide of debt.
Moody’s lowered the rating from a gold-standard Aaa to Aa1 but said the United States “retains exceptional credit strengths such as the size, resilience and dynamism of its economy and the role of the U.S. dollar as global reserve currency.”
Moody’s is the last of the three major rating agencies to lower the federal government’s credit. Standard & Poor’s downgraded federal debt in 2011 and Fitch Ratings followed in 2023.
In a statement, Moody’s said: “We expect federal deficits to widen, reaching nearly 9% of (the U.S. economy) by 2035, up from 6.4% in 2024, driven mainly by increased interest payments on debt, rising entitlement spending, and relatively low revenue generation.”
Extending President Donald Trump‘s 2017 tax cuts, a priority of the Republican-controlled Congress, Moody’s said, would add $4 trillion over the next decade to the federal primary deficit (which does not include interest payments).
A gridlocked political system has been unable to tackle America’s huge deficits. Republicans reject tax increases, and Democrats are reluctant to cut spending.
On Friday, House Republicans failed to push a big package of tax breaks and spending cuts through the Budget Committee. A small group of hard-right Republican lawmakers, insisting on steeper cuts to Medicaid and President Joe Biden’s green energy tax breaks, joined all Democrats in opposing it.

Tech IPO market is finally showing signs of life
Tech IPO market is finally showing signs of life
Yoni Assia, co-founder and CEO of eToro Group Ltd., center, and Ronen Assia, co-founder of eToro Group Ltd., center left, ring the opening bell during the company’s initial public offering at the Nasdaq MarketSite in New York, May 15, 2025.

The IPO market has repeatedly tricked investors into believing it’s reopening after an extended drought dating back to early 2022. There are, once again, signs of hope.
Shares of stock brokerage platform eToro jumped nearly 29% in their Nasdaq debut Wednesday after the Israel-based company priced its IPO above the expected range. That same day, in its first earnings report as a public company, artificial intelligence infrastructure provider CoreWeave reported 420% revenue growth, topping estimates.
CoreWeave shares rocketed about 60% this week and have doubled in value since the company’s March IPO.
It’s a big momentum swing from a month ago.
Early in President Donald Trump’s second White House term, bankers and venture investors were bullish on a reinvigorated IPO market. But after the rollout and subsequent pause of Trump’s sweeping tariff policy rocked the market in April, companies including online lender Klarna and ticket marketplace StubHub delayed their long-awaited offerings.
Exits for venture firms in the first quarter hit their highest quarterly value since the fourth quarter of 2021, but nearly 40% came from the CoreWeave IPO, according to the National Venture Capital Association and PitchBook.
“Although we anticipated a resurgence in IPO activity as the year progressed, that outlook has diminished due to the imposed tariffs,” the NVCA and PitchBook wrote in their first-quarter report in mid-April. “As public market investors shift toward less risky investments, many VC-backed companies may struggle to generate the demand necessary to meet their high market valuations.”
The second quarter is seeing more action.
Klarna and StubHub haven’t provided updates, and both companies declined to comment for this story. But the successful debut of eToro, which had also put its plans on hold, could encourage others to follow.
Fintech company Chime on Tuesday filed its prospectus to go public on the Nasdaq, after it had delayed IPO plans following the tariffs announcement. Digital health company Omada Health filed to go public last week.
“The market is going to come back,” Rachel Gerring, Ernst & Young’s Americas IPO leader, told CNBC. “It’s just a matter of when. It’s not a matter of if.”
Gerring said optimism has started to rebound. Part of that is tied to Trump’s 90-day pause on its most stringent trade policies, and a drastic reduction on tariffs from China in the meantime.
However, there’s still plenty of uncertainty, which Gerring said can be difficult for companies to manage, especially as they’re preparing to hit the market. She’s advising clients to focus on preparedness so they’re able to capitalize on the market when the time is right.
Big week ahead
In digital health, all eyes next week will be on Hinge Health.
The virtual physical therapy company filed its initial prospectus in March. Hinge updated the document this week with an expected pricing range of $28 to $32, which would value the company at about $2.4 billion in the middle of the range, not including some of its potential outstanding shares.
Digital health has been a particularly tough market over the last few years, following a Covid-era pop, when consumers and patients shifted to virtual solutions. Growth has since slowed dramatically.
AI is a different story, and chipmaker Cerebras provided an update of sorts this week.
Cerebras filed to go public in September, but the process was slowed due to a review by the Treasury Department’s Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S., or CFIUS. Cerebras CEO Andrew Feldman said Thursday at a company event that his “aspiration” is to take the chipmaker public this year now that it’s obtained necessary clearance from the committee.
And digital assets company Galaxy Digital started trading on the Nasdaq on Friday, switching over from the Toronto Stock Exchange. The New York-based firm went public in Canada in 2020, as U.S. regulators were wary of crypto.
Galaxy CEO Mike Novogratz said the switch will help “enable us to attract a broader investor base,” according to a release.
Still, for tech IPO activity to really pick up, more large-scale, growth-oriented companies need to come to market, Gerring said.
“The IPO market might be one of the latter ones to return as the market starts to recover, just given the risk around IPOs,” Gerring said. “We’re trending in the right direction.”

U.S. loses AAA credit rating due to rising debt, interest costs: Moody’s – National

Moody’s on Friday downgraded its credit rating of the United States by a notch to “AA1” from “AAA,” citing rising debt and interest “that are significantly higher than similarly rated sovereigns.”
The rating agency had been the last among major ratings agencies to keep a top, triple-A rating for U.S. sovereign debt, though it had lowered its outlook in late 2023 due to wider fiscal deficit and higher interest payments.
“Successive US administrations and Congress have failed to agree on measures to reverse the trend of large annual fiscal deficits and growing interest costs,” Moody’s said on Friday, as it changed its outlook on the U.S. to “stable” from “negative.”

Since his return to the White House on January 20, President Donald Trump has pledged to balance the U.S. budget while his Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, has repeatedly said the current administration aims to lower U.S. government funding costs.
Story continues below advertisement
The administration’s mix of revenue-generating tariffs and spending cuts through Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency have highlighted a keen awareness of the risks posed by mounting government debt, which, if unchecked, could trigger a bond market rout and hinder the administration’s ability to pursue its agenda.

The downgrade comes as Trump’s sweeping tax bill failed to clear a key procedural hurdle on Friday, as hardline Republicans demanding deeper spending cuts blocked the measure in a rare political setback for the Republican president in Congress.
“We do not believe that material multi-year reductions in mandatory spending and deficits will result from current fiscal proposals under consideration,” Moody’s said, while forecasting federal debt burden to rise to about 134% of GDP by 2035, compared with 98% in 2024.
The cut follows a downgrade by rival Fitch, which in August 2023 also cut the U.S. sovereign rating by one notch, citing expected fiscal deterioration and repeated down-to-the-wire debt ceiling negotiations that threaten the government’s ability to pay its bills.

Mexico accuses Youtuber MrBeast of exploiting Mayan pyramids permit
Mexico accuses Youtuber MrBeast of exploiting Mayan pyramids permit
Mexico is seeking compensation from US YouTuber MrBeast and a production company, accusing them of exploiting the nation’s ancient pyramids for commercial gain.
The video “I Explored 2000 Year Old Ancient Temples” shows the influencer and his team exploring ancient Mayan cities, with a permit from local authorities.
But in one part of the video, which has received more than 60 million views in a week, MrBeast advertises his chocolate product as a “Mayan dessert” and urges viewers to buy it.
Authorities said that while they had given permission for the Youtuber to film at the sites, they had not permitted for-profit use. A MrBeast representative denied some of the accusations.
A spokesperson for the Youtuber told the BBC: “No advertisement material was shot on any archaeological sites overseen by INAH (National Institute of Anthropology and History).”
In the video, the scene promoting the chocolate snack appears to be filmed at the influencer’s camping site.
The spokesperson also said the video was “meant to highlight these treasured Mayan sites in Mexico” and that it was “unfortunate that this has turned into a political issue – hopefully it can lead to a productive dialogue and encourages people to visit these unique historical treasures”.
Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum on Wednesday called for an investigation into the conditions under which the filming permit had been granted.
In the video’s caption, MrBeast – whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson- thanks ******** tourism and government authorities for permission to film in the sites, while also plugging links to his chocolate product.
The video shows him and his team exploring areas of restricted access in the Mayan cities of Calakmul and Chichén Itzá. At one point he says “I can’t believe the government’s letting us do this.”
They are also shown appearing to descend into a pyramid from a helicopter and in another scene are shown handling an ancient pre-Hispanic mask.
But heritage authorities said these were “false assertions” and accused the Youtuber of presenting misinformation. INAH said MrBeast had never held a real pre-Hispanic mask and there appeared to have been extensive post-production editing in the video – such as the helicopter scene.
“All of these are false assertions that obey the theatricality of the YouTuber in question,” its statement on Monday read.
Mexico’s Secretary of Culture Claudia Curiel de Icaza said on Thursday that, although they had authorised the permit for MrBeast to film, they had never authorised the publication of false information or the use of heritage site images for trademark advertising.
“We disapprove of any commercial pursuit that distorts the value of archaeological sites, which are a legacy of our indigenous cultures and the pride of our nation,” she said.
She added that, although Mexico was open to content that contributes to the “knowledge and dissemination of Mexico’s archaeological and cultural heritage” it was firmly against those who “take advantage of the willingness of institutions”.
She said INAH would consider “administrative sanctions” against the production company Full Circle Media, who was issued the permit to film. The BBC has sought comment from the firm.
MrBeast, dubbed the King of YouTube, is the most-subscribed to person on the platform, with 395 million followers. His Mayan pyramids video was published on 10 May.

Putin won’t take peace with Ukraine without restoring empire, former Defense Secretary Gates says
Putin won’t take peace with Ukraine without restoring empire, former Defense Secretary Gates says
Russian President Vladimir Putin believes it’s his destiny to recreate the Russian empire and won’t back down in Ukraine, former Defense Secretary Robert Gates said in an interview with “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan.”
Gates said Putin’s aims can be unclear, even in one-on-one meetings.
“I’m not sure even in a face to face that you can judge Putin’s intention,” said Gates, who served as defense secretary under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama. “My own view, having dealt with him and having spent most of my life working on Russia and the Soviet Union, is Putin feels that he has a destiny to recreate the Russian Empire. And as my old mentor, Zbigniew Brzezinski once said, without Ukraine, there can be no Russian Empire.”
While campaigning for a return to the White House, President Trump promised a swift end to the war that began three years ago when Russia invaded Ukraine. Now more than 100 days into Mr. Trump’s second term, talks to end the conflict have been inconsistent, with little sign an end to fighting is in sight.
“I think the president is — based on what I read — is getting the sense that, as he put it, that Putin is ‘tapping’ him along and … Putin hasn’t given up on any of his original goals in Ukraine,” Gates said, referring to an April 26 social media post.
In the post, Mr. Trump wrote of Putin, “maybe he doesn’t want to stop the war.”
Gates said Putin hasn’t shown a willingness to make any major concessions.
“He’s going to insist on occupying all four of the eastern provinces of the Donbas, perpetual recognition of Russian ownership of Crimea, a pro-Russian government in Kyiv and a Ukrainian military that looks a lot like an enhanced police force. And no membership in NATO and probably no membership in the EU,” Gates said.
President Trump said Friday he’s moving to set up direct talks with Putin as soon as he can. Talks with lower-level Ukrainian and Russian delegations took place in Istanbul Friday, but there was little concrete progress beyond an agreement to a major prisoner exchange in the coming days.
The conflict in Ukraine dates back to 2014, when Russian forces seized Crimea after protests in Ukraine led to the ousting of the country’s pro-Russian president, Viktor Yanukovych. Gates believes Putin wants the Ukraine that existed before that uprising.
“He wants Ukraine, basically, to be a client state of Russia, and I don’t see what it would take to get him to walk away from any of those goals in the foreseeable future,” Gates said. “I mean, when you look at 900,000 or so Russian soldiers that have been killed or wounded, he’s paid a huge price – the Russian economy and so on.”
“It hasn’t deterred him in the slightest,” Gates said.

Moody’s warned in 2023 that the US’ triple-A rating was at risk
The US has lost its last triple-A credit score from a major ratings firm after being downgraded by Moody’s, which cited growing federal debt over the past decade.
In lowering the US rating to ‘Aa1’, Moody’s noted that successive US administrations had failed to reverse ballooning deficits and interest costs.
A triple-A rating signifies a country’s highest possible credit reliability, and indicates it is considered to be in very good financial health with a strong capacity to repay its debts.
Moody’s warned in 2023 the US triple-A rating was at risk. Fitch Ratings downgraded the US in 2023 and S&P Global Ratings did so in 2011.
