Ozwald Boateng (L), was at this month’s Met Gala, with his son (C), Oscar, and daughter (R), Emilia
Ozwald Boateng, celebrating four decades of making his indelible mark on the fashion industry, got his chance to stamp his style on the Met Gala in New York earlier this month.
The esteemed British-Ghanaian designer for the first time dressed celebrities – including three of Africa’s biggest musicians, Tems, Burna Boy and Arya Starr, as well as actors Ncuti Gatwa and Jaden Smith – at what is seen as his industry’s biggest night of the year.
The theme – Superfine: Tailoring ****** Style – was “completely in my wheelhouse”, he says, as it looked at the way that style formed ****** identities.
Given that he already has a robust legacy in the design world, the 58-year-old saw the opportunity to find fresh adherents to the Boateng look.
“I think it’s, in a way, communicating to a new audience,” he tells the BBC a few days after the showcase.
Throughout his 40 years in fashion, the designer has built a reputation for challenging the norms of men’s tailoring. His eponymous brand sells form-fitting, stylish suits, often accented with bold colours and West African-inspired patterns.
The son of Ghanaian immigrants, Boateng reimagined the country’s iconic kente cloth to produce his signature “tribal” pattern.
“It’s all about having a strong concept, having a thorough idea of what you want to achieve from the textiles,” he says.
The Met Gala perfectly matched his outlook. “Being a theme about ****** culture and ****** cultural influence, I mean, how can you do that without Africa?” he asks.

Actors Ncuti Gatwa (L) and Jaden Smith (R) were both dressed by Ozwald Boateng for the Met Gala
Considering the link to Ghana, Boateng explains: “When we were colonised by the Europeans or the Brits, we kept our traditional dress, but tailoring was a big part of how we dressed to look more… effectively more European.
“My father always wore tailored suits. You had to be smart at all times, that was something I was taught.”
As if producing outfits for 16 celebrities for fashion’s premier event was not stressful enough, Boateng switched up Burna Boy’s outfit less than 24 hours before the event.
“We did his fitting quite literally the night before the Met Gala,” Boateng says, adding that everyone in the room got “really excited” when they saw the Grammy-award winning musician in the finished product.

Burna Boy was pleased with his Met Gala look
The look – a red suit paired with a buttercup yellow shirt and eel-skin cape – was partly inspired by Burna Boy’s ********* roots.
The musician told Vogue: “As a waterside pikin [Pidgin for “child”] from the ****** Delta, the eel and fish in general are the lifeblood of my people – they symbolise survival, spirit and the flow of tradition through generations.”

Afrobeats star Tems was among those who wore Boateng creations at this year’s Met Gala
The Met Gala was “not unusual”, Boateng says, explaining that Africa has been part of his “message” throughout his career.
Back in 1995, Boateng was the first ****** designer to open a shop on Savile Row, a London street famed for fine tailoring.
“When I first started as a designer, Savile as a street was a dying street,” Boateng recalls.
“The concept, it was dying. I effectively moved there in the early 90s and breathed new life into it.”
Boateng was dubbed the “peacock of Savile Row” – with his flamboyance, 6ft-something frame and modelesque facial features, he stood out among his neighbours.
Colour and flair had long been part of Boateng’s psyche. At five years old his favourite outfit was a purple, mohair suit made by his mother, who was a seamstress.
Young Boateng commandeered his mother’s sewing machine and although he initially chose to study computing at college, he switched to fashion after realising menswear was his future.
As a teenager, Boateng was greatly inspired by tailoring titan Giorgio Armani – and decades later, Armani would praise the London designer for his “elegance” and “cutting edge” designs.

Boateng has spent the last 40 years making his mark on the British fashion industry
Boateng opened his first studio in his early 20s, dressing the likes of Mick Jagger, Jimmy Paige and Spike Lee.
He then opened his Savile Row store – at the age of 28 he was the youngest to ever do so.
The burgeoning designer captivated London’s fashion scene initially, but in 1998 he went bankrupt when an economic downturn in east Asia scuppered a major order.
Both his professional and personal life descended into disarray – in just 12 months an entire collection was stolen from his studio and his marriage broke down.
But the peacock strutted his way back. Boateng gradually rebuilt his business and in 2002 moved into ******* premises on Savile Row.
Since then, he has served as Givency’s creative director for menswear, been awarded an OBE, designed staff uniforms for British Airways and branched out into womenswear.
While racking up professional and charitable commitments, Boateng was raising two children.
Now adults, Oscar and Emilia Boateng accompanied their father to the Met Gala, dressed in the suits that made their surname one of the most famous in contemporary British tailoring.
They are not, however, keen to follow their father into fashion design.
“I’m trying to slowly but surely seduce them into the fashion business,” Boateng jokes.
“It is ultimately their decision to decide what they want from their life. If they find something they’re passionate about in a way I have, I am happy.”
And what is next for his own passion? Boateng might have a brain brimming with concepts, but he has a clear vision of where he wants his brand to go next.
“The future is expansion,” he says, “raising capital to really, really push the brand globally”.
“I think it’s the moment in time – and it’s the right moment.”

Ten inmates escape New Orleans jail ‘with inside help’
Ten inmates escape New Orleans jail ‘with inside help’
Ten inmates, including some charged with *******, have escaped from a New Orleans jail with inside help, and a manhunt is under way.
The Orleans Parish Justice Center, which mostly holds people awaiting trial or sentencing, discovered the inmates aged 19 to 42 were gone during a routine head count on Friday morning, officials said.
The escapees broke out around 1am. They first pulled a sliding cell door off its tracks then breached a wall by ripping away a toilet and sink, Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson said at an afternoon press conference.
Security video captured the men fleeing via a loading dock, scaling a wall and running across a nearby highway, she said. Two of the inmates were captured on Friday, but the remaining eight were still on the run.
“We have indication that these detainees received assistance in their escape from individuals inside of our department,” Hutson said.
A jail employee monitoring surveillance video saw the escape but did not alert deputies, she said. She did not detail the assistance the inmates received.
Hutson urged the public to stay alert and said various law enforcement agencies were working on the manhunt.
Louisiana State Police said in a statement that one recovered escapee was found hiding under a car in a hotel garage in New Orleans’ famed French Quarter.
New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said at a news conference that her department was notified about the jail break about two hours after the inmates were discovered missing, and that some were facing ******* charges.
Kirkpatrick said it was concerning that her department was not notified sooner.
Kirkpatrick said police had notified some of the escapees’ alleged victims that they were on the run, and in one instance went to a home and removed a family thought to be in danger.

Former Bucs player among 255 arrested in ‘Fool Around and Find Out’ undercover investigation
Former Bucs player among 255 arrested in ‘Fool Around and Find Out’ undercover investigation
POLK COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — The Polk County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday that 255 were arrested in a nine-day, multi-agency undercover investigation called “Fool Around and Find Out” that focused on human trafficking, child predators and ******** immigration.
Detectives said they worked with investigators from several different sheriff’s offices, police departments, Homeland Security, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement during the undercover investigation.
Pasco woman shoots, kills husband while singing ‘Click, click, *****’: affidavit
The sheriff’s office said 141 suspects were charged with soliciting prostitutes, 93 suspects were charged with offering to commit prostitution, 10 suspects were charged with crimes related to prostitution and 11 suspects were accused of traveling to meet a minor for sex or otherchild-sex-related crimes.
“This is the highest number of suspects we’ve ever arrested during a single undercover operation – in addition to these 244 arrests, we also arrested 11 child predators who solicited who they thought were children online in order to ********* batter them. The online prostitution industry enables traffickers and allows for the continued victimization of those who are being trafficked. Our goal is to identify victims, offer them help, and arrest those who are fueling the exploitation of human beings (Johns) and those profiting from the exploitation of human beings. Prostitution is not a victimless crime – it results in exploitation, disease, drug and alcohol addiction, violence, and broken families,” Sheriff Grady Judd said.
Judd said Adarius Taylor, a former NFL player who played for the Carolina Panthers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Cleveland Browns, was arrested in the operation.
“The dude made a lot of mistakes. He not only brought his 6-year-old child out to the operation, but he left his 6-year-old child in the car when he went to do the operation,” Judd said. “The 6-year-old child has a lot of mental issues, and he left this child alone, who should have never been left alone because of medical conditions.”
Officials with the Department of Children and Families took possession of the child and called the child’s mom. Judd said the child is doing fine.
“This guy here, obviously, he must have hit one too many people as a linebacker because his brain cells are scrambled. He shouldn’t have shown up in the first place, but to leave that child — my goodness. So he picked up a child neglect charge along with everything else,” the Polk sheriff said.
Deputies said nine suspects showed up at an undercover location in Polk County at separate times to ********* batter children.
Investigators said one of the suspects, identified as Gregory Cooper, sent social media messages to an undercover detective posing as a 14-year-old boy.
The sheriff’s office said Cooper’s online dating profile said he was a “daddy looking for a younger boy.” They said he sent explicit ******* messages describing what he wanted to do with the boy, and said that he would be patient. He brought orange soda and gummy snacks to the undercover location, investigators said.
Eric Corliss was also arrested in the operation, according to Polk deputies. They said he sent messages to an undercover detective posing as a family member who was selling the ******* services of a 15-year-old girl. Investigators also said Corliss was soliciting undercover detectives who were posing online as prostitutes.
“He asked the detective, ‘Are you with law enforcement’ and then asked for the address of where the girl would be offered to him in exchange for money,” the sheriff’s office said.
“While Corliss told the detective he was en route, he diverted to another undisclosed location to meet with who he thought was a prostitute, and was taken into custody during that part of the investigation,” Polk deputies said.
According to the sheriff’s office, Corliss told detectives that he is a regional executive at the Red Cross and is married.
“It is extremely disturbing when we encounter ****** child predators like these who are very eager to have sex with children,” Judd said. “This is why we conduct these types of undercover operations. Keeping children safe is our number one priority, and we appreciate our partnering agencies, without whom we would not be as successful in apprehending these dangerous offenders.”
During the investigation, four possible human trafficking victims were identified, the sheriff’s office said.
One suspect was active-duty military and 13 were veterans. The sheriff’s office said several suspects were in the medical profession, including doctors and nurses.
A few of the suspects were arrested previously in similar sting operations.
Of the 255 arrested, 36 were in the country illegally, according to Polk deputies.
Deputies said several suspects left their wives or girlfriends at home, or the women thought their partners were at work, visiting a friend, or going to the gym.

Audio of interview confirms Biden memory lapses
Audio of interview confirms Biden memory lapses
Former U.S. President Joe Biden speaks at a conference hosted by the Advocates, Counselors, and Representatives for the Disabled (ACRD) on April 15, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois.

Newly released audio of a special counsel interviewing then-President Biden confirms memory lapses that White House officials denied at the time, including a president clearly struggling to remember the year his oldest son died.
Even after the transcript was released, Biden aides, including then White House spokesman Ian Sams, insisted that the president did not forget the year that his son, Beau, died of brain ******* The audio shows that Biden struggled to remember the year and had to be prompted by his lawyers, who were sitting in the interview with him.
The recording of the interview was first released by Axios.
Sams did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The audio of Biden’s interview with Special Counsel Robert Hur is likely to fuel a growing debate among Democrats and others about whether there was a concerted effort to cover up the president’s diminished mental capacity, as well as whether that contributed to the party’s 2024 defeat at the polls. It also comes as several new books offer new insights into what many behind the scenes knew.
Biden sat for more than five hours of interviews over two days in October 2023 as part of Hur’s investigation into Biden’s retention of classified documents at his home and office that were from his time as vice president. Hur later cited interviews when he described Biden as an “elderly man with a poor memory” in his final report at the end of his investigation.
Donald Trump and his Republican allies seized on Hur’s description of Biden and demanded the audio of his interviews be released.
Then-Attorney General Merrick Garland released the transcript of Biden’s interviews, but not the audio. Garland said at the time that the audio was covered by executive privilege, and the White House did not want it released.
Republicans held Garland in contempt of Congress over his refusal to turn over the audio.
News organizations, including NBC News, filed a lawsuit seeking any recordings of Biden’s interviews, and the issue was not resolved before Biden left office.
About a month after Trump took office, the Justice Department asked the court for more time to consider the issue because the new administration’s “leadership is still in the process of being installed” in the department, according to a court filing.
The judge agreed to an extension and ordered Justice Department attorneys to file an update on the status of the case by May 20.
Hur, who was tapped by Garland to conduct a criminal investigation after classified documents were found in Biden’s home and office, concluded there was evidence that Biden willfully retained classified information—a felony. But Hur said he did not believe he could win a conviction, in part because of Biden’s faltering memory.
“We have also considered that, at trial, Mr. Biden would likely present himself to a jury, as he did during our interview of him, as a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory,” Hur wrote in his report.
Biden’s lawyers at the time aggressively pushed back on that description, arguing that he performed well in a difficult interview and suffered the same sorts of memory lapses that witnesses often do. Biden’s aides and senior Democrats excoriated Hur for including such a description in a report where no charges were brought.
Months later, Hur’s assessment of Biden was validated by his disastrous performance during a debate with Trump. Biden struggled to complete thoughts and sentences throughout the debate, which led to his exit from the 2024 race weeks later.

Ex-FBI boss interviewed by Secret Service over Trump seashell post
Ex-FBI boss interviewed by Secret Service over Trump seashell post
Former FBI director James Comey has been interviewed by the US Secret Service after he shared then deleted a social media post that Republicans alleged was an incitement to violence against US President Donald Trump.
Comey voluntarily participated in the questioning for about an hour at the law enforcement agency’s Washington DC headquarters and was not held in custody.
It comes a day after he posted on Instagram a photo of seashells that spelled the numbers “8647”.
The number 86 is a slang term whose definitions include “to reject” or “to get rid of”, however, it has more recently been used as a term to mean “kill”. Trump is the 47th US president.
Trump said earlier in the day during an interview with Fox News that Comey, whom he fired as FBI director in 2017, was calling for him to be killed.
“He knew exactly what that meant,” said Trump, who survived two attempts on his life last year. “A child knows what that meant.
“If you’re the FBI director and you don’t know what that meant, that meant assassination. And it says it loud and clear.”
Trump said any decision on whether charges should be filed against Comey would be up to Attorney General Pam Bondi.
Comey posted the seashell photo on Thursday then deleted it amid conservative uproar.
He wrote in a follow-up message on Instagram that he had seen the shells during a walk on the beach, “which I assumed were a political message”.
“I didn’t realize some folks associate those numbers with violence. It never occurred to me but I oppose violence of any kind so I took down the post.”
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said on X on Friday evening that the Secret Service had “interviewed disgraced former FBI Director Comey regarding a social media post calling for the assassination of President Trump”.
“I will continue to take all measures necessary to ensure the protection of @POTUS Trump,” she added. “This is an ongoing investigation.”
Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, the highest-ranking spymaster in the US, called earlier for Comey to be jailed for “issuing a hit” on Trump while he was travelling in the Middle East.

Ex-FBI chief meets with Secret Service over ‘8647’ post
Ex-FBI chief meets with Secret Service over ‘8647’ post
Former FBI director James Comey has met with the US Secret Service, after he was called in to discuss a social media post that Donald Trump’s supporters claimed was a threat against the president
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, in a post on X on Friday, said there was “an ongoing investigation” but gave no indication of whether Comey might be subject to further action.
The Secret Service, which is in charge of presidential security and is part of the Department of Homeland Security, interviewed Comey at the Washington field office on Friday afternoon, according to a law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The meeting lasted about an hour, the official said. Comey appeared voluntarily after being asked to come in, the source said.
Federal law enforcement agencies were investigating an Instagram post by Comey on Thursday with a photo of the number 8647 formed by seashells on sand with the comment, “Cool shell formation on my beach walk.”
In US slang, the number 86 can be used as a verb meaning to throw somebody out of a bar for being drunk or disorderly. Trump is the 47th president of the United States.
Comey, who was fired by Trump in 2017, took down the post after a backlash from Trump supporters, saying on Instagram, “It never occurred to me but I oppose violence of any kind so I took the post down.”
Some Trump supporters interpreted the message as a call to violently remove Trump from office, including through assassination.
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary says on its website that one recent meaning of the term 86 was “to kill” but that it had not adopted it “due to its relative recency and sparseness of use.”
“Today, federal agents from @SecretService interviewed disgraced former FBI Director Comey regarding a social media post calling for the assassination of President Trump,” Noem said.
“I will continue to take all measures necessary to ensure the protection of @POTUS Trump. This is an ongoing investigation.”
Trump himself on Friday accused Comey of calling for his assassination, rejecting the former FBI director’s explanation that he was not aware of any violent connotation.
“He knew exactly what that meant,” Trump said in an interview with Fox News before leaving Abu Dhabi while on a four-day Middle East trip, adding that he would leave further action on the matter to Attorney-General Pam Bondi and others.
Comey was not available for comment.
The “8647” and “8646” themes have been used as political slogans and on T-shirts during the administrations of both Trump and his predecessor, Democratic President Joe Biden, the 46th US president.
Early in his first term, Trump fired Comey, who as FBI director had been leading an investigation into the Trump 2016 presidential campaign’s possible collusion with Russia.
Comey has been a sharp critic of his former boss, calling him “morally unfit” to lead in a 2018 interview.
Trump himself was accused of using Twitter posts to incite rioters, who attacked the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, to prevent the certification of Biden’s election victory.
Trump in 2024 also posted on social media a video that featured an image of Biden, who was then president, with his hands and feet tied together in the back of a pickup truck.

This Type Of Food Was Just Linked To Heart Disease And A Serious Brain Condition—And It’s Probably In Your Pantry
This Type Of Food Was Just Linked To Heart Disease And A Serious Brain Condition—And It’s Probably In Your Pantry
“Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links.”
Two new studies on ultra-processed foods link them to a higher risk of developing heart disease and Parkinson’s disease.
But eating too much could impact your heart and brain health by increasing inflammation, oxidative stress, and insulin resistance.
If you haven’t stayed up-to-date on health news lately, here’s a quick headline for you: Ultra-processed foods aren’t so great for your health. In fact, studies have linked them to a slew of health issues including diabetes and ******* risk, and having a lot of ultra-processed foods in your diet can even potentially make you age faster. But up to 70 percent of the food supply in America is made up of these products, making them tough to entirely avoid.
Still, it’s a never a bad idea to take a step back to assess what you’re eating on a daily basis, especially when we’re still learning about how ultra-processed foods could affect us. Case in point: Two recent studies have found an association between eating ultra-processed foods and a higher risk of developing heart disease and Parkinson’s disease. Given how life-altering each of these conditions can be, it’s understandable to have concerns.
Here’s what dietitians and doctors want you to keep in mind.
Meet the experts: Keri Gans, RDN, CDN, nutrition consultant and host of The Keri Report; Jessica Cording, RD, author of The Little Book of Game-Changers: 50 Healthy Habits For Managing Stress & Anxiety; Sonya Angelone, RD, a nutritionist and registered dietitian based in San Francisco, California; Cheng-Han Chen, MD, an interventional cardiologist and medical director of the Structural Heart Program at MemorialCare Saddleback Medical Center in Laguna Hills, CA; Daniel Truong, MD, neurologist and medical director of the Truong Neuroscience Institute at MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, CA.
What did the heart disease study find?
The heart disease study isn’t published yet, but it was presented at the American College of Cardiology’s annual meeting in May. The scientific review analyzed data from 8,286,940 adults across 41 studies that looked at the link between ultra-processed foods and health issues.
The researchers found a link between ultra-processed foods and high blood pressure, cardiovascular events (like a heart attack), *******, digestive diseases, and dying from any cause. Each extra 100 grams (3.5 ounces) a day of ultra-processed foods was linked with a 14.5 percent higher risk of high blood pressure, 5.9 percent increased risk of cardiovascular events, 1.2 percent increased risk of *******, 19.5 percent higher risk of digestive diseases and 2.6 percent higher risk of dying from any cause, according to the findings.
There was also a link between eating ultra-processed foods and an increased risk of obesity, diabetes, and depression or anxiety.
“Reducing ultra-processed foods intake, even modestly, may offer measurable health benefits,” study co-author Xiao Liu, MD, a cardiologist at Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, China, said in a statement.
What did the brain degeneration study find?
This study was published in the journal Neurology and analyzed data from nearly 43,000 people with an average age of 48 who didn’t have Parkinson’s disease at the start of the study.
The participants were followed for 26 years, during which time they completed regular medical exams, filled out food diaries, and answered health questionnaires. The researchers divided the participants into five groups based on how much ultra-processed foods they ate per day. They discovered that people who ate 11 or more servings of ultra-processed foods a day had a 2.5 times higher risk of having three or more early signs of Parkinson’s disease than those who had less than three servings a day. (Those early signs included things like rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder, constipation, depressive symptoms, body pain, impaired color vision, excessive daytime sleepiness, and a reduced ability to smell.)
It’s important to point out that what the researchers counted as a “serving” can really add up. Like, one tablespoon of ketchup is a serving, and so is an ounce of potato chips.
While the study didn’t find that ultra-processed foods caused people to develop Parkinson’s disease, the researchers pointed out that these early symptoms tend to come before a Parkinson’s disease diagnosis.
Why might ultra-processed foods affect your heart and brain?
There are a few potential biological things going on here that could be resulting in this data that links ultra-processed foods with heart and brain health issues.
“It is thought that ultra-processed foods affect cardiovascular health through multiple mechanisms, including promotion of inflammation, increasing oxidative stress, and increasing insulin resistance,” explains Cheng-Han Chen, MD, an interventional cardiologist and medical director of the Structural Heart Program at MemorialCare Saddleback Medical Center in Laguna Hills, CA. This can cause damage to blood vessels, create a build-up of plaque in your arteries—and raise the risk of heart attack or stroke, he explains.
But despite the health risks, ultra-processed foods can be hard to resist, says Daniel Truong, MD, neurologist and medical director of the Truong Neuroscience Institute at MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, CA. They “rapidly stimulate the brain’s reward system, similar to addictive substances like nicotine and alcohol,” per Dr. Truong.
As a result, you may end up eating a lot of these foods, raising the risk of health issues in the process.
How else can ultra-processed foods harm your health?
A big potential issue with ultra-processed foods is that they tend to crowd out healthier options, says Jessica Cording, MS, RD, author of The Little Book of Game-Changers: 50 Healthy Habits For Managing Stress & Anxiety. “If [a person is] eating a lot of ultra-processed foods that don’t offer much in the way of nutrients but contain a lot of calories, it can set them up for adverse health issues,” she says.
Plus, these foods have been associated with higher risk of *******, digestive problems, depression, anxiety, and diabetes, says Sonya Angelone, RD, a nutritionist based in San Francisco, CA. “There is a dose-response relationship between these foods and poor health, which means the more ultra-processed foods you eat, the greater the risk for negative health,” she adds.
But there’s some good news: “Reducing these foods even a little bit with less processed whole foods can provide some health improvements,” says Dr. Angelone.
That’s why it’s so crucial to focus on whole foods when building out your diet, says Keri Gans, RDN, CDN, nutrition consultant and host of The Keri Report. “Instead of obsessing over what to cut out of our diets, we should think more about adding more plant-based foods, such as 100 percent whole grains, veggies, fruits, nuts, seeds, and legumes,” she says.
Cording says there’s no need to panic if you have some ultra-processed foods in your diet, given that they’re almost impossible to completely avoid. But focusing on sourcing the bulk of your diet from whole foods could make a big difference in your overall health. “Just do your best,” she says.

Trump administration working on plan to move 1 million Palestinians to Libya
Trump administration working on plan to move 1 million Palestinians to Libya
The Trump administration is working on a plan to permanently relocate up to 1 million Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to Libya, five people with knowledge of the effort told NBC News.
The plan is under serious enough consideration that the administration has discussed it with Libya’s leadership, two people with direct knowledge of the plans and a former U.S. official said.
In exchange for the resettling of Palestinians, the administration would potentially release to Libya billions of dollars of funds that the U.S. froze more than a decade ago, those three people said.
No final agreement has been reached, and Israel has been kept informed of the administration’s discussions, the same three sources said.
The State Department and the National Security Council did not respond to multiple requests for comment before this article was published. After publication, a spokesperson told NBC News, “these reports are untrue.”
“The situation on the ground is untenable for such a plan. Such a plan was not discussed and makes no sense,” the spokesperson said.
Basem Naim, a senior ****** official, said that ******, the U.S.-designated terrorist group that has run Gaza, was not aware of any discussions about moving Palestinians to Libya.
“Palestinians are very rooted in their homeland, very strongly committed to the homeland and they are ready to fight up to the end and to sacrifice anything to defend their land, their homeland, their families, and the future of their children,” Naim said in response to questions from NBC News. “[Palestinians] are exclusively the only party who have the right to decide for the Palestinians, including Gaza and Gazans, what to do and what not to do.”
Representatives of the Israeli government declined to comment.
Libya has been plagued by instability and warring political factions throughout the nearly 14 years since a civil war broke out in the country and its longtime dictator, Moammar Gadhafi, was toppled. Libya is struggling to care for its current population as two rival governments, one in the west led by Abdul Hamid Dbeibah and one in the east led by Khalifa Haftar, are actively and violently fighting for control. The State Department currently advises Americans not to travel to Libya “due to crime, terrorism, unexploded landmines, civil unrest, kidnapping, and armed conflict.”
Dbeibah’s government could not be reached for comment. Haftar’s Libyan National Army did not respond to a request for comment.
How many Palestinians in Gaza would voluntarily leave to live in Libya is an open question. One idea administration officials have discussed is to provide Palestinians with financial incentives such as free housing and even a stipend, the former U.S. official said.
The details of when or how any plan to relocate Palestinians to Libya could be implemented are murky, and an effort to resettle up to 1 million people there would likely face significant obstacles.
Such an effort would likely be extremely expensive, and it’s not clear how the Trump administration would seek to pay for it. In the past, the administration has said Arab nations would help with rebuilding Gaza after the war there ends, but they have been critical of Trump’s idea of permanently relocating Palestinians.
In recent weeks, the Trump administration has also looked at Libya as a place where it could send some immigrants it wants to deport from the U.S. However, plans to send one group of immigrants to Libya were stalled by a federal judge this month.
Moving up to 1 million Palestinians to Libya could put far more of a strain on the fragile country.
The CIA’s most recent publicly available estimate of Libya’s current population is about 7.36 million. In terms of population, Libya absorbing 1 million more people would be equivalent to the U.S. taking in about 46 million.
Precisely where Palestinians would be resettled in Libya has not been determined, according to the former U.S. official. Administration officials are looking at options for housing them and every potential method for transporting them from Gaza to Libya — by air, land and sea —is being considered, according to one of the people with direct knowledge of the effort.
Any of those methods would likely prove cumbersome and time-consuming, as well as costly.
It would take around 1,173 flights on the world’s largest passenger airplane, the Airbus A380, at its maximum passenger capacity to transport 1 million people, for instance. With no airport in Gaza, moving anyone from there on flights would first require transporting them to an airport in the region. If Israel does not want to allow Palestinians to come through its territory, the closest airport would be in Cairo, about 200 miles away.
Transportation by land from Gaza through Egypt to Benghazi, Libya’s second-largest city, which is farther east than the capital, Tripoli, would require driving about 1,300 miles. Automobiles typically hold fewer passengers than other modes of transportation. About 55 people can fit in an intercity passenger bus.
Up to 2,000 people can fit on the top-end versions of some of the ferries the U.S. used to transport civilians along the Mediterranean Sea to escape Libya’s civil war in 2011. If those vessels were to be used — and assuming that they didn’t need to refuel and weather conditions were good — it would take hundreds of trips lasting more than a day each way for up to 1 million people to travel from Gaza to Benghazi.
The plan under discussion is part of President Donald Trump’s vision for a postwar Gaza, which he said in February the U.S. would seek to “own” and rebuild as what he called “the Riviera of the Middle East,” two current U.S. officials, the former U.S. official and the two people with direct knowledge of the effort said.
“We’re going to take over that piece, develop it and create thousands and thousands of jobs, and it will be something the entire Middle East can be proud of,” Trump said at the time.
To achieve his goal for the reconstruction of Gaza, Trump has said Palestinians there would have to be permanently resettled elsewhere.
“You can’t live in Gaza right now, and I think we need another location. I think it should be a location that’s going to make people happy,” Trump said in February during a White House meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Trump outlined a goal of finding “a beautiful area to resettle people permanently in nice homes, and where they can be happy and not be shot, not be killed, not be knifed to death like what’s happening in Gaza.”
“I don’t think people should be going back to Gaza,” he said.
Trump’s idea, which blindsided some of his top aides, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, when he announced it, drew criticism from America’s Arab allies and U.S. lawmakers from both parties.
“We’ll see what the Arab world says but, you know, that’d be problematic at many, many levels,” Trump ally Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said at the time.
The U.S. and Israel in March also rejected a proposal from Egypt for rebuilding Gaza without relocating Palestinians.
The administration’s work on a Libya plan comes as Trump’s relationship with Netanyahu has become strained, in part because of Israel’s decision to launch a new military offensive in Gaza.
The Trump administration has considered multiple locations for resettling Palestinians living in Gaza, according to a senior administration official, a former U.S. official familiar with the discussions and one of the people with direct knowledge of the effort.
Syria, with its new leadership following the ouster of Bashar al Assad in December, also is under discussion as a possible location for resettling Palestinians currently in Gaza, according to one of the people with direct knowledge of the effort and a former U.S. official familiar with the discussions.
The Trump administration has taken steps toward restoring diplomatic relations with Syria. Trump announced on Tuesday that the U.S. would lift sanctions on Syria and met briefly with the country’s new leader, Ahmad al-Sharaa, on Wednesday.

The Dark Ages and the challenges of finding new players
The Dark Ages and the challenges of finding new players
Peter Gillibrand & Tom Richardson
BBC Newsbeat
Bethesda
Slay, king: Doom’s iconic main character has been around since 1993
Few names are as synonymous with video games as Doom.
First launched in 1993, the first-person shooter (FPS) remains one of the most influential – and popular – series in the industry.
But even it and its superhuman protagonist, The Doom Slayer, have to contend with the pressures of the games industry in 2025.
Attracting new players, competing with the new titans on the scene and the rising cost of making – and selling – blockbuster titles.
BBC Newsbeat spoke to the project leaders of the latest instalment, Doom: The Dark Ages, about navigating some of these challenges.
‘You know exactly what you’re getting’
While the Doom series is famous for pitting players against colossal enemies, there are other behemoths it has to face.
“There’s so much stuff competing for our attention these days, whether it’s games, movies, or whatever,” says executive producer Marty Stratton.
Free-to-play (F2P) games, such as Fortnite and Roblox, and annually updated series such as Call of Duty and EA FC regularly dominate most-played charts.
There’s evidence to suggest players, particularly younger ones, are spending most of their time on these titles – sometimes referred to as “forever games”.
In the latest Online Nation report by *** regulator Ofcom, five of the top ten games among *** players were F2P.
Fortnite recorded about 2.65m active *** users in May 2024, and Roblox 1.22m, according to the report, and global figures are much higher.
Drawing those players to premium titles can be a challenge but Marty argues games such as Doom, which can be completed in under 20 hours, can “fit into those habits”.
“It doesn’t have to become your obsession for the next two years,” he says.
Bethesda
Doom is a series that’s not known for its subtlety – over-the-top weaponry and enemies are par for the course
The Doom series – developed by Dallas-based ID Software – has an advantage over others because it’s so well-known and has a large, loyal fanbase.
But, as industry expert Rhys Elliot, from Alinea Analytics, tells Newsbeat, it’s getting harder to rely solely on your hardcore players.
Overall, he says, the number of people playing premium titles isn’t increasing, but the cost of making them is.
“The people who make games – they still need to make revenues each year because, you know, capitalism,” he says.
One way of doing this is by attracting new players.
Doom’s director Hugo Martin says the response to Doom: The Dark Age’s previews were encouraging – something he puts down in part to its new “Medieval sci-fi” setting and altered gameplay style.
“We see it in the comments – a lot of people are saying ‘I think this is going to be my first Doom’, and that’s exciting for us,” he says.
The games industry has also leaned into customisation in recent years, giving players the power to finely tweak different elements and aspects of difficulty – something that’s been incorporated into The Dark Ages.
“In that regard I think it’s going to be a great first-time experience for a lot of fans,” says Hugo.
But there’s still the small matter of the cost of entry.
Bethesda
Doom was relaunched in 2016, providing the series’ biggest hit in years
The debate over prices has been a feature of gaming discourse for years.
In 2010, a new game cost roughly £40 in the *** – and players had plenty to say about it at the time.
If you take into account inflation (using this Bank of England tool), that would be about £60 in today’s money.
Doom: The Dark Ages itself costs £69.99 for a standard edition or almost £100 for a limited Premium Edition with extras included.
“When you look at the history of game pricing… it really hasn’t skyrocketed,” says Marty.
The issue has been thrown back into the spotlight thanks to worries over Donald Trump’s tariff plans and price announcements from the three major console makers.
That could make competitors such as Fortnite – which don’t require new, specialised hardware to run – even more appealing for cash-strapped players.
But Doom producer Marty argues that “free” games can end up costing players more in the long run, while there are “no unknown expenses” with a one-off purchase such as Doom.
“You’re not going to be asked to pay anything else, two hours in,” he says.
F2P games generate cash with in-game purchases, ranging from “microtransactions” equivalent to a handful of change or, in some cases, hundreds of pounds.
Those costs can mount up, and a recent poll of 2,001 gamers by British bank TSB suggested dedicated players can spend about £22 a month on those transactions.
That’s still less than a tentpole new release, but Doom’s director Hugo also believes people are happy to pay more for a “curated experience” with “replay value”.
“Typically, if you just make a really good game then people will want to play it again,” he says.
Getty Images
EA Sports FC is another titan in terms of player attention – and a profitable one thanks to its popular Ultimate Team mode
Analyst Rhys believes we’re going to see more “fiddling with prices” and surcharges “to see what customers are willing to pay” and a wider range of RRPs for new releases.
“Hopefully there’ll be more competition there. It’s good for consumers,” he says.
Doom is also available on PC and Xbox via Game Pass – Microsoft’s Netflix-style subscription priced at £14.99 a month.
There’s evidence more people are turning to this, as well as Sony’s PlayStation Plus – raising questions over whether they put players off paying full price.
Game Pass players could pay a £34.99/$34.99 upgrade fee to access the game two days early and receive bonus content.
Rhys says we are likely to see more of these sorts of offers are aimed at “superfans” who want to keep up with the latest releases.
For everyone else, waiting is an option.
“You can pick up the first 2016 Doom game for like £4 right now,” says Rhys.
Doom’s makers, perhaps unsurprisingly, believe their latest is worth jumping into.
“We think about price when we’re developing it – we obviously want the value to be there for players,” says Marty.
“Ultimately, it’s a market. Players will determine what they want to spend.”
“I think it’s there’s obviously still a place for a good, premium, highly polished, fun single-player game,” adds Hugo.

This is a belting addition to the Switch’s lineup of roguelikes that manages to make itself fresh and unique in a category full of bland copycats. The melding of deckbuilding, combat, memory challenges, and construction of dungeons makes for a game that draws you right in every time, robbing you of hours as you work your way through its delightful catacombs. Angry Lowry lets his frustration out at Quail Hollow
Angry Lowry lets his frustration out at Quail Hollow
A furious Shane Lowry has made his feelings about Quail Hollow known in emphatic fashion on day two of the 107th US PGA Championship.
Lowry’s tee shot on the eighth hole pitched in the fairway and bounced sideways into a pitch mark left by another player.
That meant the former Open champion was not allowed relief for an embedded ball and, after confirming the situation with a rules official, Lowry could only hit his second shot into a greenside bunker.
Lowry responded by slamming his club into the turf and exclaiming loudly “F*** this place” before going on to make a bogey five and flipping his middle finger at the hole as he tapped in.
The dropped shot contributed to a second round of 71, meaning Lowry missed the cut by a single shot on two over par.
“You hit a lovely tee shot, you’re not expecting that,” Lowry said of the eighth hole.
“I was obviously very annoyed with that because I felt like I had quite a bit of momentum going in the round and standing there with 40 or 50 yards to the pin off the fairway it’s an easy pitch shot for me and I walk away making bogey.
“You don’t get many chances and I feel like the eighth hole is one, and when you don’t take advantage of a good tee shot or you get a bit of a break like that it’s not ideal is it?”
Lowry was particularly unhappy with the unsolicited input of an on-course reporter, adding: “The ESPN guy was a bit too involved when he wasn’t asked to be and that’s what annoyed me a lot.
“He came straight over and said ‘That’s not your pitch mark’ and like that’s not for you to talk about, it’s for me to call a rules official and decide what happens.
“I wasn’t arguing that it was my pitch mark, I was trying to be 100 per cent sure because imagine if I come in (after the round) and all of a sudden somebody told me that was my pitch mark.
“They told Brooks (Koepka) his ball was okay yesterday and it was on the driving range so you need to be careful about what you’re doing because there’s so much at stake.”

Valve Makes Up for Steam Deck Repair Delay by Gifting Free Game
Valve Makes Up for Steam Deck Repair Delay by Gifting Free Game
Lightning772d ago
This is exactly what happened to Xbox year’s ago. They had no first party and started seeing decline in 1st party sales, which effected their third party games which eventually effected their console sales. A slow decline across the board.
Calm down PS fans I’m not saying PS is becoming like old Xbox. I’m showing examples of the importance of first party output. Look how Xbox finally has compelling first party and things are on a up swing(despite years going on a downswing). I know thanks to PS releases which helps a ton, (which is why Xbox hardware only dropped 6% instead of 30+% like it usually does) The point still stands despite what Genz Trends may go, first party and compelling games sell hardware and software still. Sony’s financial quarter is an example of this, of what lower First party output looks like.
No matter they’ll be right back on track in due time any time especially with DS2 (not my type of game but I know many like it) and Yotei. They’re not Xbox and let things get bad for so many years on end.

Man Says Strange Fingernail Clue Was His Only Sign of Lung ******* — Now, He’s Urging Others to Look Out for It Too
Man Says Strange Fingernail Clue Was His Only Sign of Lung ******* — Now, He’s Urging Others to Look Out for It Too
A lung ******* patient had no respiratory symptoms before his diagnosis — just an odd swelling in his fingertips.
Brian Gemmell, a fitness instructor from Scotland, went to see his doctor after noticing his fingertips had swollen — a phenomenon called finger clubbing. That trip allowed medical professionals to get to the root of the issue: lung *******. Now, Gemmell is urging others to err on the side of caution when it comes to their health.
“Go and see your doctor if you’ve got anything that you’re concerned about – that’s what a [doctor] is for,” he told The Mirror ***. “Go as soon as you can.”
Finger clubbing, or nail clubbing, itself isn’t a problem, per Cleveland Clinic. It’s not painful and on occasion, it can occur without an underlying cause. However, clubbing is most often associated with lung ******* and infections, so it is worthwhile to be examined by a doctor, the clinic’s post reads.
To determine if you have nail clubbing, you can conduct what’s called the Schamroth window test, per Medscape. Press two fingernails on opposite hands together and hold them up in front of you. If you can’t see a sliver (usually a diamond shape) of empty space between your two fingers, there may be cause for concern.

Gemmell shared his lung ******* journey in a testimonial for Roy Castle Lung ******* Foundation, an organization for which he’s a staunch advocate. He noted that he had no “common” signs of lung *******, like breathlessness or restricted breathing.
“I googled it — as you do — and a respiratory problem flagged up,” he wrote. “I went to my [doctor] and he sent me for a chest x-ray that same day.”
The x-ray technician then sought help from a radiographer, who sent Gemmell for a CT scan — which showed an “advanced tumour in my right lung,” he wrote. The medical professionals surrounding Gemmell had differing opinions, but a surgeon insisted on removing his right lung completely.
Gemmell praised his doctor for his quick recognition of the symptom’s cause, writing that his expertise coupled with his decisiveness “ultimately saved my life.” However, awareness is just as crucial, Gemmell wrote, as doctors can only diagnose a problem if it’s brought before them.
“People think lung ******* is a death sentence. That’s not surprising with the current survival statistics,” Gemmell wrote. “But it doesn’t have to be. I’m proof that it doesn’t have to be. But it’s not going to just happen. The right people have to make it happen. They have to make it a priority.”

Why youth mobility and fishing are key issues
Why youth mobility and fishing are key issues
Tom Edgington and Tamara Kovacevic
BBC Verify
BBC
The right of young people to move freely between the *** and EU has emerged as a key negotiating point – along with fishing rights – ahead of a summit in London which the prime minister hopes will “reset” relations between the two sides.
Before Brexit, people were allowed to come and go under “freedom of movement” rules. The EU would like a new “youth mobility scheme” but there are concerns about what impact this might have on *** immigration numbers.
Fishing rights are another potential sticking point with the EU calling for an extension of the current post-Brexit deal, but *** fishing groups calling for changes to it.
BBC Verify has been examining both issues and why they are important.
What are the rules on youth movement?
Since Brexit, *** and EU citizens no longer have an automatic right to live, work, or study in each other’s countries.
To come to the *** for an extended *******, EU nationals usually need specific visas – many of which require a sponsor.
Following these new rules, there has been a significant drop in the number of EU students coming to the ***.
The *** does have an existing Youth Mobility Scheme (YMS) which allows young adults to live, work and study in the *** for up to two years.
People from specific countries can apply but not from EU ones.
They have to pay an application fee, the health surcharge, and have at least £2,530 in savings. Unlike most other visa schemes, the YMS does not require sponsorship.
Last year, just over 24,000 YMS visas were issued – Australians were the largest single group, followed by New Zealanders and Canadians.
What impact could a ***/EU scheme have?
Just over a year ago, the EU proposed a “youth mobility scheme” for EU and *** citizens (aged 18 to 30), allowing stays of up to four years. The idea was rejected by the-then Conservative government.
It it is politically sensitive, given Sir Keir Starmer’s pledge to “significantly” reduce immigration levels in the coming years.
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has warned against “backsliding on freedom of movement”.
Documents circulated between EU states suggested any deal could be rebranded as a “youth experience” scheme, in an apparent bid to downplay any link to migration.
Madeleine Sumption from Oxford University’s Migration Observatory told BBC Verify that a ***/EU youth mobility scheme would likely increase net migration in the short term, as new participants arrive.
However, she adds that if everyone left the *** when their visa expired, the long-term impact on migration levels would be minimal.
“If the *** is worried about the impact, it could phase in the scheme, where it gradually increases the quota. So as people leave, the quota could be raised rather than a big bang, all come at once,” she said.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper is reportedly arguing for visas to be limited to one year so that EU citizens taking part do not show up in official immigration figures, with applications also subject to an overall cap.
Another consideration, Ms Sumption points out, is how many people would go home when their temporary visa comes to an end.
“Even on temporary visas, people do stay. They get a job offer and end up getting a skilled visa through their employer”, she says.
The Oxford Migration Observatory says about 10% of people who arrived on temporary worker visas in 2014 from Australia, Canada and New Zealand remained in the *** at the end of 2023.
What about fishing?
Fishing is another sensitive subject.
The post-Brexit deal on fishing rights – who gets to fish where – expires at the end of June 2026.
Several EU countries, including France, are asking the *** for concessions, in return for the things the *** wants from the summit.
They are pushing for a long-term extension of the current arrangements, agreed in 2020.
Fishing only accounts for an estimated 0.4% of *** GDP but it was a big issue in the Brexit campaign and promises were made that the *** would become an “independent coastal state”.
Under the Brexit deal in 2020 however, EU boats were given continued access to *** waters.
In 2023, *** vessels landed 719,000 tonnes of fish – an increase of 14% compared to 2019.
However, this growth has been driven by Scottish catches, while English fishing boats have seen a fall in their landings.
This is linked to the way in which fish quotas were divided up after Brexit, benefitting some areas.
At the same time, it has become harder for the *** to export fish to the EU due to post-Brexit paperwork and checks.
In 2023, the *** exported 235,606 tonnes of fish to the EU. That’s down 29% compared to the 2019 figure of 333,403 tonnes.
What do *** fishing groups want?
Chris Ranford, Chief Executive of the Cornish Fish Producers’ Organisation (CFPO), represents 175 member vessels and says nothing much has changed, since BBC Verify last spoke to him in 2022.
He says French vessels are still fishing off the Cornish coast: “Very modern, very high-powered French fishing vessels that have much greater catching capacity than the *** or Cornish boats come up to the six-mile line. We don’t have space to fish.”
For him, the number one priority for any future fishing deal is to stop EU vessels entering the stretch of coastal water that lies between six and 12 nautical miles offshore.
Chris Ranford, Chief Executive of Cornish Fish Producers’ Organisation
France has reportedly called for continued access to *** waters for its fishing boats, in exchange for a defence deal the *** is pushing for.
We asked the Maritime Fisheries Committee for Northern France for comment.
Another area of improvement Mr Ranford is calling for is easier access to EU markets.
“Our small to medium-sized businesses can’t afford to do the extra paperwork to get the fish to the EU market,” he said.
Elspeth Macdonald, who represents 450 fishing boats as Chief Executive of the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation, says: “The market access to the EU has become more bureaucratic.”
Elspeth Macdonald, Chief Executive, Scottish Fishermen’s Federation
She says she is disappointed with the five-year fishing deal the *** signed up to.
“Our position approaching the EU reset… is that the access to each other’s waters would be on the basis of annual discussions”.
“By having that lever around access, the *** could secure a much fairer share of the resources in our own waters.”
There are strong opinions on both sides on fishing and youth mobility.
If the *** is to get what it wants from the summit, including easing the trade in agricultural goods between the *** and the EU, there will have to be some give and take in the coming days.

Audio released of Biden interview with special counsel who described him as an ‘elderly man with a poor memory’
Audio released of Biden interview with special counsel who described him as an ‘elderly man with a poor memory’
Audio of then-President Joe Biden’s interview with former special counsel Robert Hur in the now-closed probe over Biden’s handling of classified documents was published by Axios on Friday.
The interview became one of the most notable and politically controversial parts of Hur’s investigation, which concluded there wasn’t enough evidence to charge Biden with criminal mishandling of records after his vice presidency. In a final report, Hur called Biden, 81 at the time, “a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”
While transcripts of Biden’s interview with Hur became public last year, these excerpts are the first audio recording of the interview to surface.
An official with the Department of Justice has confirmed the tapes’ authenticity to CNN.
A Biden spokeswoman, Kelly Scully, told CNN, “The transcripts were released by the Biden administration more than a year ago. The audio does nothing but confirm what is already public.”
The audio comes as questions about Biden’s physical and mental capabilities have returned to the spotlight. A forthcoming book – “Original Sin: President Biden’s Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again” by CNN’s Jake Tapper and Axios’ Alex Thompson – details signs of Biden’s decline while in office.
Biden sat for interviews with Hur for five hours over a two-day span in the fall of 2023 as part of the special counsel’s investigation into his handling of classified materials.
In one, nearly four-and-a-half-minute clip published by Axios, Biden was asked where he kept papers on matters he was “actively working” on after leaving office as vice president in 2017. Biden took a long pause and said, “I don’t know,” and then went on to talk about seemingly unrelated things that happened during that time *******, such as people encouraging him to run for president in 2016. He also had trouble remembering when his eldest son, Beau, died, and needed confirmation from those in the room.
“What month did Beau die,” Biden asked before taking a pause. “Oh, God, May 30th…”
Two people finished the then-president’s sentence: “2015.”
“Was it 2015 he had died?” Biden questioned.
In a second clip from Axios, Biden, when asked whether he knew that he had kept a memo related to Afghanistan, first said, “I don’t know that I knew. But when pressed further, Biden said, “I guess I wanted to hang onto it just for posterity’s sake.”
Shortly after, one person from Biden’s team interjected and attempted to clarify the president’s answer.
“I just really would like to avoid for the purpose of a clean record, getting into speculative areas,” the person said, adding, “His recollection, as I understand it, is he does not recall specifically intending to keep this memo after he left the vice presidency.”
In February of last year, Hur declined to bring charges against Biden, but in a final report said the former president “willfully retained and disclosed classified materials.” The more politically damaging part of Hur’s findings came in his characterization of the president as a “well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory,” one who would likely win over a jury if he faced prosecution.
Biden and his allies fiercely disputed Hur’s characterization as inaccurate and unfair, including pushing back on the special counsel raising that he didn’t remember when his eldest son Beau died in his report.
House Republicans sought records relating to the interview, including transcripts and audio recordings, in their long-running impeachment investigation into Biden, which ultimately fizzled out.
The Justice Department provided a transcript of the interview to Congress, but Biden asserted executive privilege over the audio recordings. House Republicans voted to hold then-Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt for refusing to turn over the recordings, but the Justice Department declined to pursue contempt charges at the time.
On Friday, President Donald Trump told reporters Attorney General Pam Bondi and her team would determine whether the audio should be released.
“That’s up to Pam [Bondi] and the group. I haven’t really looked into,” he said before departing Abu Dhabi. “Everybody understands the condition of him. I know people that are 89, 90, 92, 93 years old and are literally perfect. But Joe was not one of them, and they did a lot of hiding. They were they were really playing games. And, you know, you can’t do that. Our country’s at stake.”
Top Democrats, including several potential 2028 contenders, have faced questions about the new revelations in Tapper and Thompson’s forthcoming book, including whether they knew of the former president’s decline. The new round of scrutiny comes as the party is eager to move past the 2024 election and focus on waging a more forceful opposition to Trump.
Biden’s team has pushed back on the book’s claims. “We continue to await anything that shows where Joe Biden had to make a presidential decision or where national security was threatened or where he was unable to do his job. In fact, the evidence points to the opposite – he was a very effective president,” a spokesperson for Biden told CNN.
In an interview on ABC’s “The View” last week, Biden, now 82-years-old, defended his time in office and pushed back on claims he experienced significant cognitive decline while in office.
“They are wrong,” Biden said last week. “There is nothing to sustain that.”
