  1. Women’s FA Cup final: Defending champions Manchester United take on treble-chasing Chelsea Women’s FA Cup final: Defending champions Manchester United take on treble-chasing Chelsea Off the pitch, it has been a momentous week for Chelsea. Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian has bought an 8-10% stake in the club believed to be worth about £20m, stating an ambition to make Chelsea the “next global women’s sports brand”. On it, Bompastor’s side have just completed an unbeaten season in the WSL, winning a sixth consecutive title, and are now eyeing FA Cup glory to complete a domestic treble, something her predecessor Emma Hayes achieved once in her trophy-laden 12 years with the club. “To have the opportunity to win another trophy will be something exceptional for the club, we’re really focused on that. We know we can have a historical season with the treble so all our focus is on that goal,” she said. Champions League glory continues to elude Chelsea but Bompastor’s first season could end in an unbeaten domestic campaign should her side win the FA Cup. “It would be a really good season. Not a perfect one because we’ve missed one big trophy,” said Bompastor. “I think it will be 50/50 [the match]. Manchester United are a good team and used to playing these finals.” Source link #Womens #Cup #final #Defending #champions #Manchester #United #treblechasing #Chelsea Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  3. This Will Be Wall Street’s First $10 Trillion Company — And It’s Not Apple This Will Be Wall Street’s First $10 Trillion Company — And It’s Not Apple Amazon’s two growth segments can help propel it to a $10 trillion market cap. Compared to other big tech competitors, it has more room to expand profit margins in the next decade. It will take a long time, but the math shows how Amazon’s financials can support a $10 trillion valuation eventually. These 10 stocks could mint the next wave of millionaires › Investors have been in love with Apple for a long time. It was the largest company in the world by market capitalization for many years, driven by the growth of the iPhone. Now, it has been eclipsed by competitors like Microsoft and Nvidia as Apple’s revenue growth slows in the face of rapid growth from these other technology players. While Microsoft and Nvidia are solid bets to reach a $10 trillion market cap, I think another big technology player will get there first: Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN). Its dual growth engines and profit margin expansion potential have the company poised to be the first stock to eclipse a $10 trillion valuation. Here’s why Amazon — not Apple — will be the first stock to a $10 trillion market cap. Image source: Getty Images. What makes Amazon special is its leading presence in two different sectors worth several hundred billion dollars, which will eventually grow into multitrillion-dollar opportunities. These are e-commerce and cloud computing. E-commerce is still less than 20% of retail sales in the United States and has steadily grown for many decades. There is no reason to think this growth trajectory will slow anytime soon. Amazon’s combined North America and international sales were more than $500 billion over the last 12 months. When considering the long-term tailwind of e-commerce adoption, growing GDP around the world, and inflation, I believe these segments will easily double and surpass $1 trillion in revenue, with plenty of room to still grow. Cloud computing is getting supercharged by artificial intelligence (AI), which is taking the industry, once thought to have a $1 trillion addressable market, to become much larger. Amazon’s cloud computing division, Amazon Web Services (AWS), is going to capture the majority of the company’s planned $100 billion in capital expenditures in 2025. Growing 17% year over year at $112 billion in revenue, I think AWS has a clear path to expand to $200 billion and eventually $300 billion in revenue over the next decade and beyond. What makes Amazon a special case among the large technology players is the potential for great margin expansion at its increasingly large size. Over the last 12 months, Amazon’s operating margin was 11% compared to Microsoft’s 45%. Amazon’s unit economics mean it will likely never reach a 45% profit margin, but there is much more room to grow compared to its cloud computing competitor. Story Continues AWS has an operating margin approaching 40% and is becoming a larger part of Amazon’s business every year. Advertising, third-party seller services, and subscriptions are growing quickly at Amazon’s retail segment. These will all be a rising tide to lift Amazon’s profitability over the next 10 to 20 years. In the long run, I expect its operating margin to eclipse 20% due to the fast growth of these higher-margin segments. AMZN Operating Margin (TTM) data by YCharts Whether it takes 10, 15, or 20 years, I think Amazon’s combined revenue will eventually reach $2 trillion. Its competitors in big tech do not have the large addressable market afforded to Amazon by dominating both e-commerce and cloud computing, which will limit revenue growth over the next 10 to 20 years. AI should supercharge growth in cloud computing over the next decade. $2 trillion in revenue and a 20% operating margin equates to $400 billion in operating earnings. A $10 trillion market cap versus $400 billion in earnings is an earnings ratio of 25, which is entirely reasonable for a company like Amazon. Compared to other technology players, Amazon has a much clearer revenue growth path to help it achieve the hundreds of billions of dollars in annual earnings needed to warrant this valuation. It may take over a decade, but Amazon stock is my bet to be the first stock with a $10 trillion market value. Ever feel like you missed the boat in buying the most successful stocks? 5. Johnny Fisher v Dave Allen 2: Doncaster fighter stops ‘Romford Bull’ in fifth Johnny Fisher v Dave Allen 2: Doncaster fighter stops ‘Romford Bull’ in fifth The likeable Allen was introduced as ‘the people’s champ’ and received a warm welcome as he entered the ring. Fisher – thanks in large part to his social media star father ‘Big John’ and their ‘bosh’ catchphrase – is one of domestic boxing’s biggest ticket sellers. The noise turned up a notch when he made his ring walk to Take Me Home, Country Roads by John Denver, with just a small number of empty seats at the 8,000-capacity arena, nicknamed ‘Copper Bosh’ by Team Fisher. Allen failed to land with his telegraphed overhand rights and Fisher snapped out the jab as the contest struggled to catch fire early on. Fisher, who knocked out Alen Babic in the first round at the same venue last year, landed stinging uppercuts in the third and was given a warning for throwing a punch after the referee called break. With the ‘Bull Army’ in full voice, the raucous atmosphere was strikingly different to the low-key first fight in Saudi Arabia. Allen remained patient, waiting for his opening. Just like he did five months ago, he sent Fisher to the floor in the middle of the fight with brute power and determination. Then came a highlight reel knockout which drew gasps from those in attendance. The pair have remained friends since first sparring several years ago and Allen kept his celebrations on hold until Fisher was back on his feet. 10. Crystal Palace win FA Cup: Alan Shearer reflects on ‘year of the underdog’ Crystal Palace win FA Cup: Alan Shearer reflects on ‘year of the underdog’ City need to get over this disappointment quickly because they have got a massive Premier League game against Bournemouth on Tuesday. As things stand they are in sixth place and out of the Champions League places, so they really need to win it – in effect, it’s another cup final for them. Whether they finish in the top five or not, however, I can see there being a big turnover of players in Pep’s squad over the summer. We know Kevin de Bruyne is leaving and the writing appears to be on the wall for Jack Grealish as well – Guardiola preferred to bring a young kid, Claudio Echeverri, off the bench for his debut when he was desperate for a goal against Palace, rather than send on Grealish, a £100m player. There could be a lot of other changes too, and there has to be really. This City team has been amazing but they have come to the end of their ******* of dominance and some fresh faces are needed to get them challenging for the Premier League title again. Even if they spend big and bring a few players in, I am not sure whether they can get back to the levels they reached under Guardiola in the past few seasons, when they were the outstanding team in the country. But some kind of improvement is clearly needed. Considering the heights they have hit, for them to be in sixth place with two games to go and without a trophy for the first time since 2016-17 has already made this a very poor season by their high standards. 11. Headed to Summer Bay: Aussie actor and influencer Maddison Brown joins the cast of Home and Away Headed to Summer Bay: Aussie actor and influencer Maddison Brown joins the cast of Home and Away She’s starred alongside Nicole Kidman, acted on American drama Dynasty and been a brand ambassador for luxury labels like Miu Miu, Tiffany & Co and Dior Beauty. But get ready to see Aussie actor and influencer Maddison Brown in a whole new light, as she takes on a role in popular Aussie soap, Home And Away The 28-year-old social media star, who boasts almost a million followers across her accounts (she recently launched a successful beauty brand) is headed to Summer Bay in early June playing Jo Langham, a woman with connections to someone already living in the Bay. “It’s a very fractured, complicated relationship,” says Brown, speaking to us from Sydney. “There’s a lot of drama to come as the storyline evolves and I’m excited for fans to get to know Jo and her backstory. “It’s Home And Away, and Summer Bay wouldn’t be Summer Bay without high drama and conflict, so it’s going to be super exciting.” For Brown, scoring a role on the long-running series is something of a dream come true having grown up watching and enjoying the show. Camera IconMaddison Brown is joining Home And Away in early June. Credit: Jeremy Greive “It was my childhood dream to be on Home And Away — it was the be all and end all,” she says. “I acted as a child, and whenever teenagers from the acting company I was with as a five-year-old would be cast on the show, playing a student at Summer Bay High or something like that, even if they only had one line, I would think they were Meryl Streep and the biggest celebrity ever! “It was a big part of my childhood, and a big part of my upbringing, so this feels really full circle.” Brown comes to the show with a stacked CV, having previously worked on a number of high-profile film and television projects. Her breakthrough came via the film Strangerland, in which she played Lily, the daughter of Nicole Kidman and Joseph Fiennes’ characters. A role in The Kettering Incident followed (she played a younger version of Elizabeth Debicki’s character), before Brown, who also has a successful international modelling career, scored her first major role stateside, as Kirby Anders in the remake of the popular US drama series, Dynasty. With many Aussie actors beginning their careers in Summer Bay before heading overseas, Brown’s career trajectory feels back to front — but she wouldn’t have it any other way. “Yeah, I know. It’s funny,” she concedes. “But I am really happy to be back in Australia.” A return home was always on the cards for Brown, who grew up in Sydney but moved to the US for her modelling career as a teen. She launched her skincare brand, Outside Beauty & Skincare alongside her sister, Allyson, 2½ years ago and, as the company grew, so too her desire to head home after years overseas. “Being in LA, after the (writers’) strikes, I just felt like I was ready to spend some time in Australia,” she says. “The business has really been growing exponentially, so we really needed another person on the ground. 13. 3 Financial Stocks to Buy With $3,000 and Hold Forever 3 Financial Stocks to Buy With $3,000 and Hold Forever Robinhood could keep pulling investors away from traditional brokerages. Nu has a first mover’s advantage in Latin America’s fertile digital banking market. Coinbase is outlasting many of its rivals in the cryptocurrency exchange market. 10 stocks we like better than Robinhood Markets › Many financial stocks endured wild swings over the past few years as interest rates spiked and fell. Rising rates throttled economic growth and drove many investors away from stocks, cryptocurrencies, and other riskier investments. While higher rates helped banks and other lenders collect higher interest payments, they also caused individuals and businesses to take out fewer loans. But over the long term, many financial stocks should continue to rise as new investors enter the market and more unbanked individuals sign up for banking services. Let’s take a look at three of those stocks that are worth buying today and holding forever with a modest $3,000 investment: Robinhood Markets (NASDAQ: HOOD), Nu Holdings (NYSE: NU), and Coinbase Global (NASDAQ: COIN). Image source: Getty Images. Robinhood, which was founded in 2013, attracted a lot of younger investors with its commission-free trades, streamlined mobile app, and gamified approach to investing. From 2021 to 2024, its number of year-end funded accounts rose from 22.7 million to 25.2 million, its assets under custody nearly doubled from $98 billion to $193 billion, and its annual revenue rose from $1.82 billion to $2.95 billion. It sells its trades to high-frequency trading (HFT) firms to subsidize its free trades. Robinhood experienced a major growth spurt in 2020 and 2021 when the meme stock mania drew in millions of new investors. But its business cooled off in 2022 and 2023 as inflation and rising interest rates crushed many of those speculative investments. But in 2024, Robinhood recovered as interest rates declined, investors rotated toward riskier growth stocks and cryptocurrencies again, and it expanded its ecosystem to include its Cash Card, subscription-based Gold tier, and a broader range of digital payment services. From 2024 to 2027, analysts expect its revenue to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15% as its adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) increases at a CAGR of 19%. With an enterprise value of $57.3 billion, it still doesn’t look too expensive at 32 times this year’s adjusted EBITDA — and it should be a reliable long-term investment. Nu, which operates in Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia, owns the top online bank in Latin America. From 2021 to 2024, its number of year-end customers more than tripled from 33.3 million to 114.2 million, while its activity rate (its active customers as a ratio of its total customers) rose from 76% to 83%. Story Continues During those three years, its revenue grew at a CAGR of 89%. It also turned profitable in 2023 and its net income surged 91% in 2024. As a digital-only bank, Nu expanded much faster than its brick-and-mortar competitors while locking in its customers with an increasing number of checking, credit card, lending, insurance, investment, cryptocurrency, e-commerce, and business-oriented services. It’s also strengthening its ecosystem with more artificial intelligence (AI)-driven analytics tools, chatbots, and cybersecurity services. More than a quarter of Latin America’s population remains unbanked, according to Global Findex, which leaves Nu plenty of room to expand. From 2024 to 2027, analysts expect its revenue to rise at a CAGR of 32% as its net income increases at a CAGR of 38%. Those are stellar growth rates for a stock that trades at just 27 times this year’s earnings. Coinbase is one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges. It generates most of its revenue from its trading fees, so it experienced a severe slowdown in 2022 as rising rates chilled the market and unleashed a new “crypto winter.” But even after riding out that downturn, its year-end assets on platform still increased from $278 billion in 2021 to $404 billion in 2024. A lot of that growth was driven by the approval of the first Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs), which used Coinbase as their primary custodian. Coinbase’s annual revenue still fell from $7.8 billion in 2021 to $6.6 billion in 2024, but analysts expect it to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% to $7.9 billion in 2027. Investors should take those estimates with a grain of salt, since they’re tethered to the unpredictable crypto market, but they indicate its volatile business will gradually stabilize. Its adjusted EBITDA is expected to dip from $3.35 billion in 2024 to $3.26 billion in 2027 as it ramps up its investments, but the expansion of its platform with more features — including its smart wallets, tools for developing Ethereum-based decentralized apps, and its Coinbase One subscription plans — could lock in more of its investors. With an enterprise value of $60.8 billion, Coinbase isn’t cheap at 8 times this year’s sales. But it’s outlasted other major exchanges like FTX, which collapsed in 2022, and its top competitor, Binance, is being scrutinized by regulators. So if you’re bullish on the crypto market, Coinbase could still be a good “forever” stock — as long as you can tune out the noise and stomach its near-term volatility. 16. Pope Leo XIV arrives for inauguration in Rome Pope Leo XIV arrives for inauguration in Rome Pope Leo XIV has arrived at his inauguration at St Peter’s Square, greeting Catholic faithful and blessing babies from his Popemobile as he drove through the crowd. Ahead of the ceremony, where he will formally take up his role as leader of the global Catholic Church, the Pope — US-born Robert Prevost — was driven through tens of thousands of well-wishers, including dozens of world leaders and European royalty. Credit: David Ramos/Getty Images Catholics are expected to cram the square and surrounding streets in Rome for the formal celebration, which starts at 10am local time on Sunday (6pm AEST) and includes the first ride in the white Popemobile by Leo, the first Pope from the United States. Born in Chicago, the 69-year-old pontiff spent many years as a missionary in Peru and also has Peruvian citizenship, meaning he is also the first Pope from that South American nation. Prevost, a relative unknown on the world stage who only became a cardinal two years ago, was elected Pope on May 8 after a short conclave of cardinals that lasted barely 24 hours. He replaces Pope Francis from Argentina, who died on April 21 after leading the church for 12 often turbulent years during which he battled with traditionalists and championed the poor and marginalised. US Vice President JD Vance, a Catholic convert who clashed with Francis over the Trump administration’s hard-line immigration policies, will lead a US delegation alongside Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is also Catholic. Zelenskiy last met Vance in February in the White House, when the two men clashed fiercely in front of the world’s media. Also expected at the ******** ceremony are the presidents of Peru, Israel and Nigeria, the prime ministers of Italy, Canada and Australia, ******* Chancellor Friedrich Merz and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. In various sermons and comments since his election as Pope, Leo has praised Francis repeatedly but has not offered many hints about whether he will continue with the late pontiff’s vision of opening the church up to the modern world. His homily on Sunday is likely to indicate some of the priorities for his papacy, having already made clear over the past 10 days that he will push for peace whenever possible Camera IconClergy members attend the inaugural Mass of Pope Leo XIV’s pontificate gather in St. Peter’s Square at the ********. Sunday’s Mass will feature prayers in several languages, in a nod to the global reach of the 1.4-billion member church, including Latin, Italian, Greek, Portuguese, French, Arabic, Polish, and ********. As part of the ceremony, Leo will also formally receive two items as he takes up the papacy: a liturgical vestment known as a pallium, a strip of lambswool which represents his role as a shepherd, and a special band known as the fisherman’s ring. The ceremonial gold signet ring is specially cast for each new Pope and can be used by Leo to seal documents. It features a design of St Peter holding the keys to heaven and will be broken after his death, marking an end to his papacy. 17. A critical industry is slamming the economy A critical industry is slamming the economy Anyone trying to buy a home in the last few years has found the process a struggle. Buyers and sellers must deal with: Don’t miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet’s free daily newsletter Typically, home-***** activity should be perking up right now because families — especially families with children — like to move in the spring and summer. They want time to get children enrolled in schools. They need to learn where to shop and reestablish themselves in new neighborhoods, and they must adjust, if necessary, to changes in commuting times. Related: Major homebuilder warns of new housing problem This year started with hopes that Interest rates would slide lower. The economy would offer confidence to home owners debating whether to assume the risks of buying. Home prices would be sort of stable. In fact, 2025 has been a bit of a bummer. Rates on 30-year mortgages have mostly gone up. Prices are higher, and the economy was body-slammed by President Trump’s tariff plan in April. Two monthly reports this week will offer a picture of the current situation: the National Association of Realtors’ report on April existing-home sales, due Thursday, and the Commerce Department’s report on new-home sales in April, due Friday. The existing home-sales report is expected to show sales running at a 4.12 million-unit annual rate, up slightly from 4 million in March. But it would be off nearly 40% from the October 2020 recent peak sales rate of 6.85 million units. The new-home sales projection is an annualized 700,000 rate, down from a 724,000 sales-rate in March. But that rate would be off some 60% from about 1 million new homes sold in 2020. The biggest conundrum home buyers face in 2025 is that home prices have climbed massively in the last 20 years. Incomes have not. The tax of building a down payment to buy a home is difficult at best for first-time buyers. And many would-be buyers are reluctant to saddle themselves with huge mortgage expenses every month with no money left over. A group of signs advertising the new homes in Minnesota.UCG/Getty Images Let’s say homeowners bought a house 25 years ago for $300,000, financing with a 15% down payment (or $45,000) and an 8% mortgage. The monthly payment at the time might have been $1,871, plus taxes, insurance and the like. Now, the owners want to sell, and the value of the home is $600,000. A 15% down payment would be $90,000 and, at current mortgage rates (about 6.9%), the monthly principal and interest payment would be roughly $3,560, plus, of course, plus taxes, insurance and the like. The first-time buyers’ first reactions might be to start crying. Related: Surprising homeownership trend surges among Gen Z and Millennials Without first-time buyers, however, move-up buyers can’t move on to their next homes. The situation is affecting the entire economy. It’s one of those things you don’t think about. But a home ***** affects appliance dealers and manufacturers, hamburger joints, dry cleaners, furniture dealers, paint manufacturers, building-supply retailers, real-estate brokers, lawyers, title companies and, of course, lenders. The immediate spending a buyer might do on his house or apartment after a ***** closes might total 7% to 10% of the sales price. If refurnishing the house, maybe the total hits 30% or more of the home’s price. If you’re doing a big renovation, the numbers explode. Small wonder the National Association of Home Builders Housing Market Index for May showed: Builder expectations dropped 8 points to 37. Above 50 says the builders are optimistic. Sales expectations for the year have fallen. Traffic of prospective buyers has tumbled. About 34% of builders reported cutting prices, up from 29% in the April report. The average price cut: 5%. Builders with the financial muscle (that is, big builders like Pulte (PHM) and D.R. Horton (DHI) ) have used incentives, usually subsidizing mortgage payments, for the first few years to make sales. The cost of the incentives hit their profits. Related: Major homebuilder warns of new housing problem The demand/need to get the country affordably housed is much ******* than that. The National Association of Realtors, admittedly full-on in favor of homeownership, estimates the entire country needs 367,000 more homes available for ***** at no more than $170,000, 416,000 more homes priced $255,000 or less and 364,000 homes priced under $340,000. How you get all those homes requires land, water, utilities, roads, cash, enlightened land-use officials and good financial training for buyers and sellers. There’s one other issue. People buy homes because they have jobs. But where the jobs are is where markets are most tight. The tightest markets include California, Massachusetts, Hawaii, Montana and Idaho. Logic suggests, then, that jobs need to move out to housing becomes more affordable. This past Friday’s report on housing starts and building permits showed fewer single-family homes are getting started, but multi-family complexes are up a little. More Real Estate: That’s why the two reports coming this week matter. So does the context. The Federal Reserve boosted rates 11 times starting in 2022 to combat inflation pressures that erupted after the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic. Though the Fed cut its key federal funds rate from 5.25%-to-5.5% to 4.25%-to-4.5% in three cuts in late 2024, the residual effects of those increases are still at work on the economy and on the housing market. Publicly-traded home builders like Lennar (LEN) , KB Home KBH, Pulte and D.R. Horton have seen their stocks fall by roughly 30% since mid-September 2024 when the Fed announced its first interest-rate cut. But the stocks didn’t fall because of the Fed directly. Rather, bond yields started rising, mostly because of how bond investors look at the U.S. financial position — large and growing deficits. The 10-year Treasury yield, a key determinant of mortgage rates, has risen from 3.62% in September 2024 to 4.48% as of Friday. Another way to look at the bond market: Track the iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (TLT) . Its value rises as interest rates fall and fall when rates go up. The ETF’s price fallen 14.8% since September. Related: Like it or not, the bond market rules all Appliance giant Whirlpool (WHR) has seen its shares fall 38% from their January high of $133.14. Home-improvement giant Home Depot (HD) , which reports first-quarter earnings before Tuesday’s open, has seen its shares fall 10.4% from its January high. Online real-estate broker Redfin (RDFN) agreed to sell out to Rocket Companies (RKT) for $1.75 billion. Afterward, Redfin CEO Glenn Kelman said he agreed to sell the company the company was facing serious stress. “We would have been stripped for parts,” he told The Puget Sound Business Journal. Rocket shares have suffered, too — down 36% from their August 2024 high, reached as it had become clear the Federal Reserve was ready to cut interest rates. 20. Jacinta price destined to be in the public eye as she admits ‘I’ve always loved being a performer’ Jacinta price destined to be in the public eye as she admits ‘I’ve always loved being a performer’ One of Jacinta Nampijinpa Price’s favourite things to do is play boardgames with her family — lately a game called Chameleon has been popular. Price may love it, but it is hard to imagine the firebrand Senator being much good at a game that, as the name suggests, is all about trying to blend in. Being part of the wallpaper is not exactly her style. Forget politics, Senator Price has been standing out from the crowd since she was a young girl who fell in love with music. “Music has always just been a part of who I am and the way I’ve expressed myself,” Price told The Sunday Times at the tail end of a tumultuous week and a half that saw her defect from the Nationals to the Liberal Party and a blink-and-you-missed-it tilt at its deputy leadership. “I sang in the choir, I started to learn the violin when I was about nine-years old. . . and then I was involved in a hip-hop group in my teenage years when I thought classical music was no longer as cool as hip-hop. Camera IconJacinta Price with Catch the Fly hip-hop group. Credit: Bob King “I guess I’ve always loved being a performer onstage and with my music. . . it was quite empowering to be on stage, to feed off the energy of an audience.” These days, although Senator Price sometimes gets pulled onstage by her Scottish singer-songwriter husband Colin Lillie — the two worked on the TV show Yamba’s Playtime together — and admits to contributing “the odd lyric,” the closest she gets to performing is politics. Camera IconJacinta Price with her Scottish singer-songwriter husband Colin Lillie. Credit: Supplied/Supplied “My favourite part of the job is engaging with audiences around the country,” she said. “And so there is an element of that, there is an element of connecting to an audience and electrifying an audience through being able to speak about things that I’m passionate about. “I think, you know, music and having such a career onstage has lent itself to stepping into that, I guess, with more ease, perhaps than others might.” Senator Price, who went from entertainer to Alice Springs councilwoman in 2015, has been in the spotlight since entering Federal Politics in 2022, following in the footsteps of her mother Bess Price, a former politician and Warlpiri woman. Part of that is down to her high-profile role leading the No campaign against the Voice to Parliament. The other part is likely down to her forthright — and, yes, polarising — personality. This week, she made headlines when she threw her hat in the ring to be the new Liberal deputy leader under Angus Taylor, only to step back when Sussan Ley narrowly won the leadership ballot. Camera IconJacinta Price and her family. Credit: Supplied Asked how she switches off after a working week like that, Senator Price’s answer was surprising — “cleaning.” “I’ve been cleaning the house and working on my yard in order to prepared for my youngest son’s 18th birthday tomorrow (on Saturday),” she said. “Generally family time means a lot to me, being able to hang out with, whether it’s my husband or my sons and their partners. “We’re a family that loves board games, various different kinds. So we love that sort of thing. “We love walking through the walking tracks and the hills that’s around Alice Springs with our dogs and getting out bush whenever we get the opportunity.” Senator Price’s youngest son becoming an adult is one of two looming milestones for Price that have nothing to do with Canberra. In August she will become a grandmother when her eldest has his first child. “I’m really, really excited,” she said. Camera IconJacinta Price with baby Leiland. Credit: Supplied Top of the agenda? “To spoil them rotten.” Earlier this year the singer turned children’s entertainer turned council woman turned Federal politician mad another addition to her increasingly lengthy resume: author, with the release of her memoir, Matters of the Heart. Camera IconSenator Price, who went from entertainer to Alice Springs councilwoman in 2015, has been in the spotlight since entering Federal Politics in 2022. Credit: LC PP/AAPIMAGE Senator Price said nobody tried to talk her out of baring it all on the page but there were moments of self-doubt. “There was the moment of, sort of, am I sure this is what I really want to do?” she said. “But then, you know, I thought, there’s no point hiding from the person you are and the experiences that have built you as a human being and your character. “And I think it’s important, because quite often, particularly in this role, your detractors want to dehumanise you and I thought it was really important to point out, well, actually, I am human and I have made mistakes in my life and I have overcome adversity and deep challenges and that is part of what it means to be human. “Mind you, day before launch day, I kind of thought to myself: well, what have I gone and done? Too late, now it’s going to be out there. “We’ll have to see how the next one goes down the track. . . the experience of politics will definitely have to be part of that.” Canberra — consider yourself warned. It is a life lesson the trio, whose family motto is ‘Care above all’, have also taken into running 10th generational firm CPJ Field, the oldest independent ******** director in the *** after the family enterprise was enlisted to make its first coffin in 1690. Field, together with his brother and sister, sit down once or twice a year with a facilitator to review their employment contracts. “We review what we have between us, how we will behave, treat each other and how we work together,” says Field. “We just keep that moving.” With revenue close to £10m, the Sussex-based business has done just that. Over 335 years, it has conducted more than 1 million funerals – from Queen Victoria to John Wayne-themed send-offs. It currently employs about 120 full-time staff and oversees burial, cremation and ******** planning options. Field’s father, Colin, then started a new firm in 1994, before Jeremy approached the owners of the old family business. “I asked them if they would consider letting us reconnect to our history? And they said yes,” recalls Jeremy, who joined the firm aged 29. “I was touring the ******** homes with my father in my early teens,” he adds. “I was learning the ropes and I realised just how much had gone in via osmosis all those years ago when we were going around in the car. So, it’s not just about funerals, it’s family business. Story continues CPJ Field offers a wide range of ******** services, including traditional and non-traditional options. “I always had a line that I was going to go and do something first. I tried to join the army, they weren’t keen and I’m not bitter. But I didn’t like the idea that somehow my future was preordained for me.” Today, the firm continues to innovate — it used a glass-sided hearse to take coffins to funerals back in the 19th century — and is billed as the leading provider of ******** management software to the sector since 2014. “We were looking at the way we talk to families of deceased people about ******** arrangements and the tools that we had to support the administration of what we were doing,” says Field. The Field siblings have followed in their father’s footsteps at the helm of CPJ Field. It was, says Field, during COVID when resilience was tested as a business and its ability to operate from sites with internet connections. “It was like nothing I’d ever encountered before,” he admits. “We were telling our colleagues to do exactly the opposite of what the prime minister was telling everybody to do. “We needed to lean on the trust that we have as a family business, that we know the people in the company and we know each other, know their families, and to keep being able to provide ******** services for those that needed them most. I think we did that to a very successful degree. “I was very conscious that I was asking people, for all intents and purposes, to put themselves in harm’s way and trust that I would keep them safe. I’m not going to aggravate it by drawing a parallel to it, but it’s like nothing I’d ever experienced in commerce before.” Read More: ‘Why we set up a sustainable mobile operator to save people money’ Field received an OBE in 2022 for services to the ******** profession during the pandemic and leads by the phrase posed by Thomas ******, the US poet and ******** director: ‘By getting the dead where they need to go, the living get where they need to be’. It’s a very jolly club.” How to run a successful family business There’s all sorts of stuff about trying to leave the baggage at the door and trying to forget those squabbles you had as kids. Just be honest about how you’re feeling. Be honest about what’s on your mind. Be honest about what you want to see happen as it’s a bit like not going to sleep on an argument. Everybody needs to know where everybody stands, and sometimes that can be painful, and you’ve got to remember to be kind in the way that you try and have these honest conversations. Pent-up frustrations lead to tension and so family business or otherwise, it’s vitally important to always have an employment contract.
