MicroStrategy pioneered the idea of buying Bitcoin, and now other companies are starting to follow its example. According to Silicon Valley venture capitalist Tim Draper, corporations have a responsibility to buy Bitcoin to maximize shareholder value. 10 stocks we like better than Bitcoin › These days, it seems like everybody is trying to buy Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) — individuals, Wall Street banks, institutional investors, and even the U.S. government. But until recently, corporations were not getting into the act. Only a relatively small number of publicly traded companies currently hold Bitcoin on their balance sheets. But that could be changing. According to billionaire Silicon Valley venture capitalist Tim Draper, corporations need to start buying Bitcoin. If America’s publicly traded corporations decide to go on a Bitcoin buying spree, that could send the world’s most popular cryptocurrency soaring to new all-time highs. Corporations are starting to follow the playbook created by MicroStrategy (NASDAQ: MSTR), the company now doing business as Strategy. That playbook primarily consists of one play: buying Bitcoin. Strategy now owns a staggering amount of Bitcoin — 568,840 coins and counting. It seems that nearly every week, Strategy reports a major buy of more Bitcoin. Its current Bitcoin stockpile is valued at nearly $60 billion. In 2024, a number of publicly traded companies started to dip their toes into the Bitcoin waters. In some cases, they were not even tangentially related to blockchain or crypto, so it raised a few eyebrows. But those were relatively small companies, and it was possible to ignore all the chatter about American companies buying Bitcoin. Image source: Getty Images. But then came December 2024 and a first-of-its-kind shareholder proposal voted on at tech titan Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT). Simply put, the proposal called on Microsoft to start adding Bitcoin to the balance sheet, all in the name of building shareholder value. Michael Saylor, the founder and executive chairman of Strategy, even gave a brief three-minute presentation to Microsoft shareholders, showing them how much money they were leaving on the table by not buying Bitcoin. The Microsoft Bitcoin proposal eventually failed, but it should have been a big wake-up call for corporate America. The proposal combined a wildly bullish outlook for Bitcoin with the rather staid concept of shareholder value. The proposal essentially made the case that buying Bitcoin was the responsible thing to do. If corporations aren’t buying Bitcoin, the thinking goes, they aren’t maximizing the value of a business. Flash forward to today, and Tim Draper is now arguing that it is “irresponsible” for corporations not to buy Bitcoin. Speaking at the Financial Times Digital Assets Summit, he outlined the case for buying Bitcoin and specifically noted that businesses without Bitcoin are not serving shareholders’ interests. As he sees it, Bitcoin can help to build shareholder value. Just as corporations hold cash and cash equivalents, they should also hold Bitcoin. This notion of irresponsibility is very important. It has led to corporations divesting from certain regions of the world or refusing to invest in certain types of businesses. It has led to corporations embracing ESG (environmental, social, and governance) initiatives and fully detailing them in their presentation materials to shareholders. What if corporations now decide to address Bitcoin in the same way? Things get very interesting when you start to consider the potential impact on the future price of Bitcoin. Investment firm Bernstein recently ran the numbers and calculated that publicly traded corporations could add as much as $330 billion in Bitcoin to their combined balance sheets within the next five years. Given Bitcoin’s total market cap of $2 trillion, that’s a lot of buying and would almost certainly send the price of Bitcoin skyrocketing. According to Draper, Bitcoin is going to $250,000 by the end of 2025, and one catalyst will be corporations buying Bitcoin in size. The problem is that a strategy of adding Bitcoin to the balance sheet only works if the price of Bitcoin continues to go up. If the price of Bitcoin goes down, corporations will actually be reducing, not maximizing, shareholder value by buying Bitcoin. Every quarter, they will need to write down the value of their Bitcoin holdings, which will lead to losses that will come out of shareholder equity. Unfortunately, we’ve seen this story before. In early 2021, Elon Musk and Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) made headlines worldwide with the decision to buy $1.5 billion in Bitcoin. It looked like a genius move, and the price of Bitcoin soared to a record high. However, just months later, Tesla started to walk back the idea of customers paying for their cars in Bitcoin. Then, after the price of Bitcoin cratered in 2022, Tesla was no longer talking about buying Bitcoin. In fact, in July 2022, it sold 75% of its Bitcoin holdings. The lesson was clear: Bitcoin is simply too volatile to hold a lot of it on a balance sheet. I’m not saying this scenario will happen again. But I’m also not saying it won’t. Certainly, if you’re a Bitcoin investor, it’s exciting that corporate America might start loading up on Bitcoin. That would almost certainly send the price of Bitcoin higher. The big question, though, is what will happen if the price of Bitcoin falters. Gas storage facility could close without government help, Centrica boss warns Gas storage facility could close without government help, Centrica boss warns BBC The ***’s largest gas storage facility could be closed if the government does not help support a redevelopment of the site, the boss of the company which owns it has told the BBC. Centrica chief executive Chris O’Shea told BBC One’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme that its Rough storage facility would be “shut down” without government help over energy pricing. Centrica – which owns British Gas – says the site is set to lose £100m this year, and it wants to invest £2bn in the facility so it can use it to store more gas, including hydrogen. The government said the future of Rough was a commercial decision for Centrica but it is open to discussing proposals. The Rough facility is off the coast of East Yorkshire, and accounts for about half of the capacity the *** has to store gas. It was closed in 2017, but then partly reopened in October 2022 following the energy crisis triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Earlier this month, Centrica said it was in “constructive discussions” with the government for a support mechanism that would allow investment in the Rough site to proceed. The company is seeking a “cap and floor” pricing mechanism. This means that if energy prices fall below a certain level its revenues will be topped up, but prices would be capped if they rise too high. “What we’re asking for is simply for the government to help create the conditions which will unlock £2bn of investment,” Mr O’Shea told the BBC. “It will create thousands of jobs in the construction phase, and it will safeguard the jobs of very highly skilled colleagues that are offshore.” Without this investment he said the site would be decommissioned “and we’ll lose this resilience”. He said the *** currently has 12 days of gas storage, of which Rough provides six. “So if we don’t have Rough anymore, then we go down to six days. Now, if we take Rough to full capacity, we will go up to about 25, or 30 days.” Last week, Mr O’Shea said the way that the energy pricing mechanism worked meant that building of renewables would not “materially” reduce *** electricity prices from current levels. He told Laura Kuenssberg on a visit to the North Sea platform that decarbonisation was important and also a “huge economic opportunity”. However he added that “the price we see today for electricity is the same as the price that we’re given to new renewable developments”. “Therefore, that new renewable development will not bring down the price.” He added that he thought the government’s 2030 target for clean energy was “very challenging, but I think it’s right that the energy secretary has set a very stretching target”. “It’s not impossible, no, but it’s not easy.” Pay row Last year, Mr O’Shea told the BBC that the £4.5m pay he received the previous year was “impossible to justify”. And earlier this month, nearly 40% of Centrica’s shareholders voted against the company’s latest pay plans. In the piece, Brink hit out at Trump for pressuring Ukraine rather than Russia. “I respect the president’s right and responsibility to determine U.S. foreign policy ― with proper checks and balances by U.S. Congress,” she said. “Unfortunately, the policy since the beginning of the Trump administration has been to put pressure on the victim, Ukraine, rather than on the aggressor, Russia,” Brink said. Brink, a long-serving career diplomat, said that she therefore felt it was her duty to step down. “Peace at any price is not peace at all ― it is appeasement,” she said. Brink took a public line that was supportive of Ukraine under the administration of Trump’s pro-Kyiv predecessor Joe Biden. Twenty-one people were injured, a U.S. Coast Guard spokesperson said early Sunday, and were taken to shore via small boat before being transferred to a hospital. Adams had previously said on X that 19 were hurt, two were in critical condition “and 2 more have sadly passed away from their injuries.” Others were checked out, and divers were probing waters at the scene as a precaution, three police sources with knowledge of the incident said earlier. Adams said at a news conference Saturday night that the tall ship with 277 people on board suffered a mechanical mishap that caused it to veer into the bridge as it had set sail from Pier 17 en route to sea. “The pilot lost power of the ship,” he said, adding that two crew members were on a mast and were injured in the collision. Chief Wilson Aramboles of the New York Police Department’s Special Operations Division said the collision happened about 8:20 p.m. Inspectors were immediately dispatched to assess the condition of the bridge, the police sources said. New York City Department of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez said the head of bridge division was at the scene, with a preliminary assessment concluding there were no signs of major damage. Adams said the bridge was open. Commercial traffic in the area was suspended, and the Coast Guard’s Sector New York established a “safety zone” from the Brooklyn Bridge to the Manhattan Bridge, the Coast Guard spokesperson said. You might — if it had been converted into a community of well-designed apartments with a club house, swimming pool, green spaces, restaurants, retail shops and even a preschool. That’s exactly what was done to an old prison in Lorton, Virginia. “We really felt that we were liberating these buildings from its dark past, and for that reason we thought Liberty was a good name for the project,” David Vos, a development project manager with real estate developer The Alexander Company, told CNBC Make It. The Lorton Reformatory prison complex, originally commissioned by Theodore Roosevelt, was built in 1910 and shuttered in 2001. In 2002, Fairfax County bought the 2,324-acre campus for $4.2 million. In 2008, The Alexander Company — which specializes in urban infill development and historic preservation — partnered with the county and Elm Street Development to help convert the campus, with renovations taking place from 2015 to 2017. The company spent $64 million converting 207,000 square feet into the Liberty Crest Apartments. Rent for the 165 apartments ranges from $1,372 and $2,700 per month. For comparison, the average rent for all property types in Virginia is $1,700 per month. Forty-four of the units are set aside for people earning 50% of the median household income of $136,719 for Lorton, according to CNBC Make It. These units were fully leased within a couple of months and have been at full occupancy since. The Lorton Reformatory was a Progressive Era prison, so it’s architecturally interesting and laid out well for apartments, with plenty of windows providing lots of natural light and ventilation. The original dining room has been turned into a club house with a pool table and shuffleboard table, while the prison ball field has been converted to a central green for residents. There’s also a fitness center, yoga room, swimming pool and two playground areas, along with retail shops and restaurants. Plus, there’s still room for development. A few penitentiary buildings on the complex are slated to become commercial spaces and the power plant is being converted into 10 additional apartments. Story Continues The developers, believing we can learn from our past, have kept some signage from the original prison intact as a reminder of what the buildings once were. This can be an environmentally friendly way to develop needed spaces such as affordable housing. According to The World Economic Forum (WEF), “cities are turning to adaptive reuse as a powerful strategy to reduce waste, cut emissions and enhance circular economy principles in the built environment.” Repurposing an existing building emits 50% to 75% less carbon than building new, according to WEF, and the process itself can be efficient — up to 90% of materials can be salvaged and diverted from landfills when buildings are repurposed rather than demolished. By saving the expense of demolition and new construction, repurposing can result in cost savings of 12% to 15%. Communities also benefit from adaptive reuse because it helps to preserve culture and architecture while creating unique, distinctive spaces to work and live. It can also be a catalyst for urban renewal and innovation. For example, where the Lorton prison complex was once an empty, decaying structure, there’s now attractive architecture, affordable housing and community spaces. Adaptive reuse projects can also boost property values in the surrounding community through neighborhood revitalization. Jobs are created during the project and, longer term, for ongoing maintenance and administration of the new facility — as well as through any commercial spaces that may be part of the development. However, it often means overcoming community and regulatory hurdles. In the case of Lorton Reformatory, investors initially expressed concern that the development was in a metro area without mass transit and that mixed-income housing might turn off prospective developers. Eventually, an investor did see the potential — and the result is Liberty Crest Apartments. Despite these types of hurdles, adaptive reuse projects represent a huge opportunity for developers and communities alike. CNBC Make It reports that 188 prison facilities were shut down in the U.S. between 2000 and 2022, and in at least nine states conversions of these facilities are either underway or have been completed. It was decided that brain surgery was the best option for Boki, who went under the knife in October. After spending the winter in semi-hibernation, he has now been able to re-join Wildwood’s other two bears, Fluff and Scruff. Once trailing by as many as five lengths, Journalism was still far behind Gosger at the top of the homestretch as it squeezed between Clever Again and Goal Oriented — the horses so close they and their jockeys rubbed together — before finally finding open ground. From there, with jockey Umberto Rispoli urging him on, Journalism ran down Gosger at the post, needing all of the course’s 1 3/16th miles to author a stunning comeback victory at the 150th Preakness at Baltimore’s Pimlico Race Course. It was the second Preakness victory for Journalism’s trainer, Michael W. McCarthy, who previously won in 2021 with Rombauer.
