Israel says open to deal that includes ‘ending the fighting’ in Gaza Israel says open to deal that includes ‘ending the fighting’ in Gaza Israel signalled Sunday that it was open to striking a deal with ****** that included “ending the fighting” in Gaza, where rescuers reported dozens killed a day after Israel stepped up its offensive. Israel’s military has said the expansion of its campaign is aimed at “achieving all the war’s objectives” including releasing hostages and “the defeat of ******”. But as the intensified operations got underway, Israel and ****** were entering indirect talks in Qatar that the ************ group said were aimed at ending the war. In a statement on Sunday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said that “even at this very moment, the negotiation team in Doha is working to exhaust every possibility for a deal — whether according to the Witkoff framework or as part of ending the fighting,” referring to US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff who has been involved in previous discussions. Such a deal, according to Netanyahu’s statement, “would include the release of all the hostages, the exile of ****** terrorists, and the disarmament of the Gaza Strip”. Ever since a two-month ceasefire fell apart in March as Israel resumed its offensive, negotiations mediated by Qatar, Egypt and the United States have failed to reach a breakthrough. Netanyahu has opposed ending the war without ******’s total defeat, while ****** has balked at the prospect of handing over its weapons. Senior ****** official Taher al-Nunu said on Saturday that the talks in Doha had kicked off “without any preconditions from either side”. A ****** source familiar with the negotiations said that “positions are being exchanged by both sides in an attempt at bridging perspectives”, adding the group was approaching the talks with “great flexibility”. – ‘No one left’ – On the ground, civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP on Sunday that 22 people were killed and at least 100 others wounded in a predawn attack on tents sheltering displaced Palestinians in Al-Mawasi, in the southern Gaza Strip. AFPTV footage showed people sifting through the wreckage of ruined shelters and rescuers treating the wounded. At a hospital in nearby Khan Yunis city, young men mourned over the shrouded bodies of loved ones laid out on the ground outside. “All my family members are gone. There is no one left,” said a distraught Warda al-Shaer standing amid the wreckage in Al-Mawasi. “The children were killed as well as their parents. My mother died too, and my niece lost her eye.” Bassal said that the “series of violent Israeli air strikes” across Gaza overnight and in the early morning resulted in a total of “at least 33 martyrs, more than half of whom were children”. There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military. Israel’s intensified assault comes as international concern has mounted over worsening humanitarian conditions in Gaza due to a blockade on aid imposed on March 2. UN chief Antonio Guterres, addressing an Arab League summit in Baghdad on Saturday, said he was “alarmed” at the escalation and called for “a permanent ceasefire, now”. The summit’s final statement urged the international community “to exert pressure to end the bloodshed”. – Hospitals ‘out of service’ – In Tel Aviv, demonstrators took to the streets on Saturday to protest against Netanyahu’s government and demand it strike a deal to secure the release of the remaining hostages. “Instead of bringing them all home by agreeing to the deal that is on the table, Netanyahu is dragging us into a needless political war that will lead to the death of the hostages and soldiers,” said protester Zahiro Shahar Mor, nephew of slain hostage Avraham Munder. Of the 251 hostages taken during ******’s October 7, 2023 attack that triggered the war, 57 remain in Gaza, including 34 the military says are dead. Israel has faced increasing pressure to lift its aid blockade, as UN agencies warn of critical shortages of food, clean water, fuel and medicine. On Sunday, the health ministry in ******-run Gaza accused Israel of laying siege to the Indonesian Hospital in Beit Lahia, where it said “a state of panic and confusion is prevailing”. The ministry later said Israel had cut off the arrival of patients and staff, “effectively forcing the hospital out of service”. With “the shutdown of the Indonesian Hospital, all public hospitals in the North Gaza Governorate are now out of service”, it said. ******’s October 2023 attack resulted in the deaths of 1,218 people on the Israeli side, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official figures. The Gaza health ministry said that at least 3,193 people have been killed since Israel resumed strikes on March 18, taking the war’s overall toll to 53,339. az-smw/ami Source link #Israel #open #deal #includes #fighting #Gaza Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

Former Little Mix singer Jesy Nelson gives birth to twins
Pelican Press posted a topic in World News
Former Little Mix singer Jesy Nelson gives birth to twins Former Little Mix singer Jesy Nelson gives birth to twins Former Little Mix singer Jesy Nelson has announced the birth of her twin daughters. In a post on Instagram, the 33-year-old said that two girls were born prematurely at 31 weeks on Thursday but said they were “healthy and fighting strong”. Nelson said her and her partner Zion Foster were “so blessed” and had “never felt more in love”, sharing pictures of them holding the girls in hospital. They have been named Ocean ***** and Story Monroe Nelson-Foster. Nelson wrote: “So, our beautiful baby girls decided to come at 31 weeks plus five days. “It all happened so quickly, but we are so blessed that they are here with us, healthy and fighting strong. We’ve never felt more in love.” Nelson previously revealed she had experienced rare complications during the twin pregnancy, which was first announced in January. In March, she said she had undergone a “successful” operation to prevent complications related to twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS). The condition is caused by abnormal connecting blood vessels in the twins’ placenta which leads to an imbalanced blood flow from one twin, known as the donor, to the recipient twin, leaving one baby with a greater blood volume than the other. According to the NHS website, it affects 10% to 15% of identical twins who share a placenta, and can have serious consequences. Shortly after the surgery in March, Nelson said: “The TTTS has cleared up, the operation was a success, which is just absolutely incredible. We are so, so lucky to have the most amazing doctors.” She also revealed that her twins were monochorionic diamniotic (MCDA), meaning they share a single placenta but have their own separate sacs. Nelson left Little Mix in December 2020, saying she needed to protect her mental health. She later explained that online abuse – an issue she explored in a 2019 BBC Three documentary – had left her at “breaking point”. Since leaving the band, Nelson has released music as a solo artist, including the single, Boyz, featuring Nicki Minaj, in 2021. Little Mix, also featuring Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Perrie Edwards and ***** Thirlwall, formed on the X Factor in 2011. The group went to record multiple *** top 10 albums and five number one singles, with hits such as Wings, ****** Magic and Shout Out to My Ex. In 2021, they announced they would be taking a break after their 2022 tour but insisted they were not splitting up permanently. NYT Strands today: hints, spangram and answers for Sunday, May 18 NYT Strands today: hints, spangram and answers for Sunday, May 18 Strands is a brand new daily puzzle from the New York Times. A trickier take on the classic word search, you’ll need a keen eye to solve this puzzle. Like Wordle, Connections, and the Mini Crossword, Strands can be a bit difficult to solve some days. There’s no shame in needing a little help from time to time. If you’re stuck and need to know the answers to today’s Strands puzzle, check out the solved puzzle below. How to play Strands You start every Strands puzzle with the goal of finding the “theme words” hidden in the grid of letters. Manipulate letters by dragging or tapping to craft words; double-tap the final letter to confirm. If you find the correct word, the letters will be highlighted blue and will no longer be selectable. If you find a word that isn’t a theme word, it still helps! For every three non-theme words you find that are at least four letters long, you’ll get a hint — the letters of one of the theme words will be revealed and you’ll just have to unscramble it. Every single letter on the grid is used to spell out the theme words and there is no overlap. Every letter will be used once, and only once. Each puzzle contains one “spangram,” a special theme word (or words) that describe the puzzle’s theme and touches two opposite sides of the board. When you find the spangram, it will be highlighted yellow. The goal should be to complete the puzzle quickly without using too many hints. Hint for today’s Strands puzzle Today’s theme is “Riding the wind.” Here’s a hint that might help you: no motors. ‘Criminal’: Elton John condemns ***’s AI copyright plans ‘Criminal’: Elton John condemns ***’s AI copyright plans Elton John has accused the British government of “committing theft” by proposing tech firms could train artificial intelligence models on the ***’s music and creative output without guaranteeing proper recompense. Creative industries globally are grappling with the legal and ethical implications of AI models that can produce work after being trained on existing material. Prime Minister Keir Starmer wants the *** to become an AI superpower and has proposed relaxing copyright laws to allow AI developers to train their models on any material to which they have lawful access. The proposal would require creators to proactively opt out to stop their work from being used. The biggest names in the industry, including John, Paul McCartney, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Ed Sheeran, have urged the government to change course, saying the proposal will make it even harder for young people to make a living in the creative industries. “The danger is for young artists, they haven’t got the resources to keep checking or fight big tech,” John told the BBC. “It’s criminal and I feel incredibly betrayed. “A machine … doesn’t have a soul, doesn’t have a heart, it doesn’t have human feeling, it doesn’t have passion. Human beings, when they create something, are doing it … to bring pleasure to lots of people,” he said. John has sold more than 300 million records across his six-decade career. A supporter of Starmer’s Labour Party, he said he had always sought to support young artists and would continue to fight against the changes. The government says it is seeking a solution that will enable creative industries and AI companies to flourish. It said on Sunday it was consulting on measures, would publish an assessment on the economic impact of any move, and would not sign off on anything unless it was “completely satisfied they work for creators”. Britain has long outperformed in the creative industries, with thousands employed in sectors including theatre, film, advertising, publishing and music. The PSLV rocket carrying India’s EOS-09 Earth-observation satellite lifts off from the Satash Dhawan Space Centre on May 17, 2025 (May 18 local time). The launch ended in a failure due to a problem with the rocket’s third stage. | Credit: ISRO India’s attempt to launch an Earth-observing radar satellite tonight (May 17) ended in failure. The Indian Space Research Organisation‘s (ISRO) EOS-09 spacecraft lifted off atop a Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) rocket from Satish Dhawan Space Centre on Saturday at 8:29 p.m. EDT (0029 GMT or 5:59 a.m. India Standard Time on Sunday, May 18). The satellite was lost due to an issue with the third stage of the rocket about six minutes into the launch. “The PSLV is a four stage vehicle. Up to the second stage, the performance was quite normal,” ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan said in a televised statement after the launch. “Third stage, motor started perfectly, but during the functioning of the third stage, we are seeing a observation, and the mission could not be accomplished. After analysis, we shall come back.” ISRO officials reported the same statement on social media, referring to the rocket as PSLV-C61. “PSLV-C61 performance was normal till 2nd stage. Due to an observation in 3rd stage, the mission could not be accomplished,” ISRO stated on X. The EOS-09 launch was intended as the ninth mission in India’s Earth Observation Satellite series. The satellite was equipped with a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) payload, which had been it successfully deployed, would have allowed observations of our planet both day and night and through cloud cover. The 3,735-pound (1,694 kilograms) EOS-09 had been scheduled to deploy from the PSLV’s upper stage about 18 minutes after liftoff, at an altitude of 332 miles (535 kilometers). “Its ability to provide round-the-clock, reliable intelligence is especially significant given ongoing security concerns along India’s borders with Pakistan and China,” India Today wrote, before the launch failure. Jim Chalmers welcomes Productivity Commission recommendations amid Labor’s productivity push Jim Chalmers welcomes Productivity Commission recommendations amid Labor’s productivity push The Productivity Commission is expected to call for submissions on 15 reform recommendations on Monday — a move welcomed by Treasurer Jim Chalmers. Dr Chalmers in December formally tasked the Productivity Commission with conducting five inquiries to identify priority reforms to help counter Australia’s productivity decline. The 15 recommendations will be aimed to help raise wages, boost national income, and make Australia’s economy future-proof without fuelling inflation or increasing government debt. Dr Chalmers said the invite for submissions on the initiatives would be the initial step with the findings expected to be presented at a later date. “We might not be able to run with everything, but we will consider all of it and see what we can progress,” he said. “The Albanese Government already has an ambitious productivity agenda and we’re eager to build on it.” Alongside the Commission’s actionable advice, Labor’s agenda has included streamlining approval processes, changes to merger laws, abolishing non-compete clauses, and unlocking opportunities in AI and digital assets. Less than 24 hours after Labor’s thumping election win handing the PM a significantly increased majority, Dr Chalmers declared the focus of the second term of the Albanese Government would be productivity. When Dr Chalmers asked the Productivity Commission for advice in December, it included a focus on five key areas including, boosting economic dynamism, building a skilled workforce, harnessing digital technology, improving care delivery, and supporting the shift to cleaner, cheaper energy. “Flatlining productivity is one of the biggest challenges facing our nation, and that’s why we need a big national effort to turn it around,” Dr Chalmers said. “It will take longer than two terms to turn around this productivity problem which has been building in our economy for decades, but we know that this work will make a meaningful difference in boosting wages and living standards sustainably into the future.” The Productivity Commission had reported a 0.1 per cent decline in the December quarter and warned the issue was a long-term structural challenge. It found a post-COVID “productivity bubble” driven by pandemic policy response had burst and the nation had reverted to the sluggish growth pattern recorded between 2015 and 2019. The #1 Fruit to Eat for Better Heart Health, According to a Cardiologist The #1 Fruit to Eat for Better Heart Health, According to a Cardiologist Reviewed by Dietitian Karen Ansel, M.S., RDN Recipe photo: Morgan Hunt Glaze. EatingWell design. Key Points According to a cardiologist, avocados are the best fruits for heart health. Avocados are rich in heart-healthy fats, fiber, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Research has found they may help lower cholesterol and blood pressure. Heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death in the United States. And millions of Americans take cholesterol- and blood pressure-lowering medication to reduce their risk. But what if we told you there were certain foods that were proven to protect against heart disease? Like fruit! Of course, there are loads of choices. So, we asked cardiologist Sarah Alexander, M.D., FACC, to share her favorite fruit for heart health. Her answer? Avocados (yes, they’re actually fruits!). Here’s why she’s such a big fan, plus tasty ways to add more of these heart-healthy fruits to meals, snacks and even desserts. How Avocados May Improve Heart HealthThey’re Rich in Heart-Healthy Nutrients Avocados contain vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that support heart health. One standout, says Alexander, is potassium. “Potassium helps lower blood pressure by decreasing the effects of sodium,” she says. Think of potassium and sodium like a seesaw, where potassium works to counterbalance the blood pressure-raising effects of sodium. With nearly 500 milligrams of potassium per half-avocado, they boast even more potassium than bananas. That’s not all. Avocados are also packed with antioxidants like carotenoids and vitamin E, which help protect blood vessels, lower harmful LDL cholesterol and promote overall vascular health. They’re Loaded with Beneficial Fats Avocados are rich in heart-friendly polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. Research has shown that these fats can help lower LDL cholesterol levels., These fats are so beneficial that the Dietary Guidelines for Americans specifically recommends prioritizing them over saturated fats as much as possible. Several studies confirm a link between avocados and lower LDL and better heart health. For instance, a meta-analysis of seven studies found that avocado eaters had lower total and LDL cholesterol than non-avocado eaters. Additional research links avocado consumption to less heart disease overall. For instance, one study found that people who ate at least two servings of avocado per week were 16% less likely to develop cardiovascular disease and 21% less likely to have coronary heart disease than those who didn’t eat avocados. The study also found that replacing just half a serving of butter or margarine with avocado was associated with a 16% to 22% lower risk of cardiovascular disease. They’re a Surprising Source of Fiber Avocados are packed with fiber, a nutrient that most of us don’t consume enough of. In fact, half an avocado provides nearly 7 grams of fiber. That’s one-quarter of the 28-gram Daily Value! About half of that is cholesterol-lowering soluble fiber. This helpful fiber binds to cholesterol building blocks in the gut and sweeps them out of your body like a broom, naturally lowering cholesterol. If that weren’t enough, research has found that fiber also plays a role in reducing blood pressure. Contain Cholesterol-Lowering Plant Sterols Have you ever noticed how margarine tubs are often plastered with heart-healthy logos or claims? The reason is that many of these products contain cholesterol-lowering compounds called plant sterols. Well, so do avocados! In fact, avocados boast more plant sterols than most other fruits. “Plant sterols can lower cholesterol by preventing absorption of cholesterol, and lower cholesterol can reduce your risk of developing cardiovascular disease,” says Alexander. They work by acting like shields, helping block cholesterol absorption in the gut. They’re so effective that they’ve been shown to lower LDL cholesterol by roughly 10%. Tips to Enjoy Avocados Here are some fresh ideas to enjoy avocados in meals, snacks, drinks or even sweet treats: Try a New Twist on Avocado Toast: Who doesn’t love avocado toast? For a new spin on this heart-healthy favorite, try our White Bean & Avocado Toast. Or, for a protein-packed alternative, top it with Jammy Eggs. Transform Them into Dips: Guacamole is one of Alexander’s favorites. Plus, it’s one of the easiest dips to prepare. Chipotle fans will love our Almost Chipotle’s Guacamole. Craving something different? Whip up our ultra-******* Avocado-Yogurt Dip and enjoy it with sliced fresh veggies for dunking. Swap Them in for Mayo: Give your chicken or tuna salad a *******, heart-healthy makeover by swapping in avocado for all or part of your recipe’s mayo. It’s deliciously ******* in this Avocado Chicken Salad. Or, mash it to use in place of mayo or cheese in sandwiches. Blend Them into Smoothies or Soups: Add fresh or frozen avocado chunks to smoothies or soups for a rich, ******* texture. Need ideas? Try our Really Green Smoothie or this avocado-infused ******* Cucumber Soup. The Bottom Line Avocados are the No. 1 fruit for heart health, according to a cardiologist. These nutritious fruits are jam-packed with a wealth of heart-healthy nutrients. They’re loaded with unsaturated fats, fiber, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and plant sterols that support heart health. Thanks to their mild flavor and rich and ******* texture, avocados are delicious in dips, sandwiches, smoothies, soups, shakes and even desserts. ‘It’s like a bomb went off.’ Tragic scenes unfold in storm-ravaged London, KY ‘It’s like a bomb went off.’ Tragic scenes unfold in storm-ravaged London, KY Editor’s note: Herald-Leader Opinion Columnist Linda Blackford hustled to Laurel County Saturday morning to canvass the area and share observations. Here is her account of what she saw at the pummeled Sunshine Hills subdivision. Search-and-rescue crews were racing house-to-house in this Laurel County neighborhood Saturday morning, looking for survivors or those who may be trapped on the heels of a roaring storm and apparent tornado that ravaged Southern Kentucky. Rescuers combed through the devastation at Sunshine Hills outside London on Keavy Road in Laurel County. Sheared-off roofs and collapsed walls were spotted on the road that winds through the neighborhood. It’s a quiet scene of absolute destruction; as if a bomb just exploded. Brick homes were open to the sky; cabinets and kitchenware spilled out to the ground. A dining area that was once the likely center of a family’s home is now smashed and scattered on the front lawn. It looks like there’s a path of damage at least a mile deep through the subdivision. Homes on both sides of the road are in ruins. Debris is scattered everywhere, with remnants of children’s clothing, tattered bath towels and busted screens strewn about. In the front yard of what appeared to be a mobile home with its roof peeled away, a lonely, unbroken wooden rocking chair stood sentinel. It looked to be in fine condition, a sharp contrast to nearby splintered drywall and busted windows. A red pickup truck was covered with belongings from a nearby home or possibly a garage or tool shed. It held steady in the face of the overnight system. It had not been lifted; it wasn’t toppled over. As of 10:30 Saturday morning, the National Weather Service had yet to declare the monster that roared through Laurel and Pulaski counties as a tornado. But it’s apparent a violent force of nature chewed up homes, trees and vehicles in the dark of night. It went through the subdivision with a surgical precision. While Sunshine Hills was ravaged, homes just outside of the subdivision were still standing Saturday morning. Some sustained very mild damage; others showed neither sign nor strain of an apparent twister. Standing in the middle of the neighborhood, it was impossible to not flash back to vivid and similar destructive scenes from Dawson Springs, the Western Kentucky community that was devastated by the Dec.. 10, 2021, weather pattern that included an EF-4 tornado. That system was the deadliest and longest-tracked tornado in an outbreak that spawned numerous strong twisters in several states, including Kentucky. It caused 57 deaths. The death toll in the commonwealth Saturday morning stood at 14, with whispers that it will spike even higher by day’s end. By 3:30 p.m., at least 18 were confirmed dead. The same eerie feeling of lives disrupted or stolen by Mother Nature’s wrath could be felt Saturday in the subdivision. Outside of rescue crews, few people roamed what remains of Sunshine Hills. Authorities were keeping property owners away for the time being. Delaying their quest to sift through the rubble and piece together lives that likely will never be the same. The three most stolen product types from trucks in the first quarter of 2025 were food and beverages (34%), building and industrial (10%), and auto parts (9%). The auto parts category increased by 4% year over year, with the most stolen products being transport cars, tires, and electrical auto parts, Overhaul said. Cargo theft from trucks in transit was the main tactic used by criminals in the first quarter, accounting for 62.6% of the cases. Theft from parked trucks was the second most common cargo crime, accounting for 36.8% of the incidents. Most of these events occurred in high-risk areas for cargo theft such as rest areas or fueling stations. To protect cargo, Overhaul said transporters should use tracking and monitoring devices that provide real-time visibility into the location and status of loads. “In this way, companies can take immediate action to address potential security threats,” Overhaul said. First Intel Core 2 and Nvidia RTX 50 gaming experiments disappoint First Intel Core 2 and Nvidia RTX 50 gaming experiments disappoint Earlier in the week, we reported on an Nvidia driver change which opened up crazy new possibilities for PC DIYers. However, the dreams of Intel Core 2 system makers enjoying outlandish high jinks with Nvidia RTX50 GPUs have now partially evaporated. Twitter(X)-based tech enthusiast Bob Pony, who first surfaced the driver change, is back, but his tales of “struggles,” aren’t exactly the news we wanted to hear. (Image credit: Bob Pony) To recap, the latest Nvidia GeForce driver re-enabled support for Intel processors dating back to the Core 2 era, as it no longer required CPU support for the POPCNT instruction. That is all well and good, and Pony took to Twitter yesterday to “happily confirm that it’s possible to use an NVIDIA RTX 50 series graphics card in an old system such as an Intel Core 2 Quad.” Specifically, they partnered their old Core 2 Quad Q9450 with an unashamedly modern RTX 5060 Ti. “It works!” Pony celebrated, and tipped followers to avoid trying the same with an RTX 5060 non-Ti due to its PCIe x8 interface. What happened next is that Pony quickly went from fiddling around in Windows 11 to trying to get some modern games running on their May-to-September combo. You may like The struggles of using a Core 2 Quad paired with NVIDIA RTX 5060 Ti… can’t play majority of games that use ray tracing due to the processor lacking some instruction sets required for the game to run. pic.twitter.com/XcwZFxhHXSMay 17, 2025 Things didn’t go great, and a few hours ago, Pony returned to social media with a less chirpy Tweet. Their key finding was that they “can’t play [the] majority of games that use ray tracing due to the processor lacking some instruction sets required for the game to run.” The included screenshot showed evidence of Quake II RTX falling on its face. So, ray traced games are out of the question with these lopsided systems, but plenty of others may have decent performance. It would be great if social media communities could start to put together a compatibility list. In the meantime, perhaps we can keep an eye on this social media post. We might also find that Intel Core 2 system owners are more attracted to older titles, which their previous GPU wasn’t that great at accelerating. If this were the case, an RT gaming roadblock wouldn’t be perceived as a significant loss. Follow Tom’s Hardware on Google News to get our up-to-date news, analysis, and reviews in your feeds. Tesla Model Y achieves record-breaking feat amid rising EV demand: ‘I remain extremely optimistic’ Tesla Model Y achieves record-breaking feat amid rising EV demand: ‘I remain extremely optimistic’ Tesla’s Model Y is now the most driven car in Norway. As of April, more than 70,000 Model Ys have been registered in the country, Teslarati reported. That makes it the most common car in the Scandinavian nation, surpassing the Toyota RAV4. The Nissan Leaf, Volkswagen Golf, and Toyota Yaris round out the top five. The news is just the latest in a string of achievements for the Model Y, which has been the top-selling car in Norway for the past three years. In 2023, it broke the record for most cars sold in a single year in the country, besting the Volkswagen Beetle’s 54-year-old mark. But it’s not just the Model Y — Norway has, in many ways, become the global model for getting electric vehicles on the road. The country has been quick to embrace EVs, setting an ambitious goal of having all new-car sales be electric by this year. It is encouraging car buyers to go electric by offering rebates and providing plentiful public charging stations. All that work is paying off. In March, EVs accounted for more than 93% of new-car sales in the country, per OFV data shared by CleanTechnica. In 2024, the total number of EVs on Norwegian roads surpassed the total number of petrol-powered vehicles for the first time, although they both trail behind diesel vehicles. This latest Model Y news is something Tesla can hang its hat on after a few months of less-encouraging news. The company posted disappointing first-quarter financial results, and it has seen stock price and global sales numbers both tumble. The slump comes amid backlash to CEO Elon Musk’s political involvement and increased competition on the EV market, though other factors could also be play, such as Tesla’s focus on humanoid robot Optimus, among other things. Still, Musk sounded optimistic when discussing the company’s quarterly results. “We’ve gone through many, many crises over the years and actually been through many near-death experiences,” he said on an April investor call. “This is not one of those times. We’re not on the ragged edge of death, not even close. … I remain extremely optimistic about the future of the company.” Join our free newsletter for good news and useful tips, and don’t miss this cool list of easy ways to help yourself while helping the planet. Nintendo confirms Switch 2 will include much-requested accessibility feature Nintendo confirms Switch 2 will include much-requested accessibility feature The Nintendo Switch 2 will support text-to-speech. The feature, which has been shown off in a new gameplay clip of the Nintendo Switch 2‘s Game Chat feature, shows players typing messages into the system, which are then read by the system itself. While currently unconfirmed, the original Nintendo Switch system supported USB keyboards, so it’s likely Nintendo Switch 2 will also support the accessory. The Nintendo Switch 2 will also support live captions, meaning that a chat box on the side of the screen during Game Chat sessions will transcribe what other players say into their Nintendo Switch 2 systems, adding a further layer of accessibility. Game Chat allows multiple players to chat and stream their gameplay to each other directly. Players can also share their screen even if they’re playing a different game, meaning one player could be playing Mario Kart World while their friend is sharing their Donkey Kong Bananza gameplay underneath. GameChat will be free to use until March 31, 2026, after which it will require a Switch Online subscription. This week it was confirmed by Nintendo that Switch 2 will not support variable refresh rate (VRR) when played in docked television mode, despite the feature being initially announced. Switch 2 is due to launch on June 5. On Friday, Nintendo detailed the free Switch 2 updates coming to 12 of its existing Switch games at launch, including Super Mario Odyssey, Pokémon Scarlet & Violet, and The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. Some games will only be getting the addition of GameShare support, a new feature which means that players with multiple Switch consoles (be that Switch or Switch 2) will be able to play multiplayer with only one copy of the game. AMD on AM4 socket longevity, AM5, and the future AMD on AM4 socket longevity, AM5, and the future When AMD launched its Ryzen processors on a newly minted AM4 socket in 2017, it was a game changing moment. Finally, AMD was bringing back real competition to Intel. But while Ryzen was killing off the relevance of the venerable quad core, it was also introducing a new idea of socket longevity that would see gamers able to evolve their PCs over time, rather than ripping their guts out every few years. AM4 went on to be AMD’s flagship socket for more than half a decade. But while team red has since moved on to newer sockets and CPUs, AM4’s sheer lifespan has become one of its most defining features. It’s become something expectant from AMD fans for socket AM5 and beyond. While AM4’s longevity has surprised us all, though, a long-lasting socket was something AMD had planned from the start. To find out more about the humble beginnings of Ryzen and the sockets that powered it, DigitalTrends sat down with AMD’s product management lead for gaming and workstations, Sourabh Dhir. Building for the long term “So AM 4 is coming up to it’s almost eighth here now, which is really remarkable,” Dhir said. “The way we look at our platform, road map and platform generations, one of the core tenets of our strategies, really: how do we serve our end consumer base?” “Our core strategy here at AMD […] is always to minimize the burden on our end users and and design the platform in a way which would last multiple generations.” Bill Roberson/Digital Trends / Digital trends That was the plan with AM4, he said, and it was the plan for AM5 too. The current AMD socket has planned support in place through 2028, even if a new AM6 socket appears before then. But while AMD does consider consumer needs when building in this kind of longevity to its products, Dhir did admit there was a business decision there, too. When consumers with AM4 or AM5 motherboards come to upgrade, AMD maintaining socket longevity means they will only have to buy a new CPU to upgrade, rather than a full motherboard and memory. But it also means those consumers will almost certainly buy an AMD CPU. Because if they wanted to buy anything else, they would have to buy a new motherboard as well. “They can definitely just buy the next generation of AMD CPU,” Dhir said. “So from that point of view it’s like I said it’s it’s a good business strategy. It it’s a win win situation for everyone across the ecosystem.” While I had assumed motherboard partners would likely prefer a more regular socket change, prompting AMD users to upgrade their motherboards too, Dhir suggested the opposite was in fact true. By keeping the same socket, there are defined parameters for board partners to work in. Certain power limits and specific supporting technologies. They can then focus on bringing costs down with economy of scale production and refine the designs, rather than having to reinvent the wheel every few years. “It really helps [board partners] to drive their investments for all the components to get down the cost curve,” Dhir explained. “All our ecosystem partners are also making investments into making a platform. And if you if you have the right longevity, they they really appreciate it.” “If our motherboard partners want to launch new motherboards within the same socket infrastructure, there are innovations. There are features they can add, and they’ve been doing that we’ve we’ve launched new versions of AM5, new versions of AM4 motherboards, etc.” Bill Roberson/Digital Trends This ultimately helps them evolve their business strategy to focus on profitability, alongside feature innovation, rather than having to redesign entirely new boards. From the end-user perspective, too, boards can evolve to become more capable. An AMD running on a 300-series chipset was a very different beast to one running on a 500-series board. Taking it on the chin None of that is to say that this strategy is perfect for AMD. There’s a reason that Intel and AMD has have historically only kept a socket around for a generation or two, and it’s not just because it encourages fans to upgrade more often. But in maintaining the socket for a few more years, AMD is forced to innovate within those constraints, leading to what Dhir believes are better products for consumers. “It’s much easier to every every generation or two if we just throw a new infrastructure,” he said. “The degrees of freedom are much easier. But if we start with the engineering challenge that we need to remain within the boundaries of AM4 and and what that does is the innovations have to come from other places.” AMD The innovations have to come from the CPU architecture or the motherboard design, rather than just upgrading the socket to throw more power at the problem. “Not everything has to come from changing the infrastructure,” Dhir said. “There are power improvements. There are socket improvements. You don’t have to change the pin out of the socket, but there are innovations within that same pin out. There’s thermal improvements, there’s electrical signal integrity, there’s mechanical improvements.” “We can do [a lot] without really moving to the next generation of overall infrastructure.” How to move on If AMD is specifically trying to keep its sockets relevant for as long as possible, when does it finally draw the line under AM4 and in the future, AM5, and decide it needs to move on to a new platform? Despite knowing the investment that will require from gamers and fans who have grown used to more incremental upgrades. “A road map we keep in mind is the memory, right?” Dhir answered. “So if you look at AM4, you can map it to the life of how our memory ecosystem was developing. When when DDR5 came into market, we wanted to adopt that technology early. We wanted to give the benefits of that, improved bandwidth, improved memory capabilities to our end users.” “That was one of the major driving factors when we decided, OK, it’s it’s time to [move to a new socket design].” Kingston It was also keen to upgrade the PCIExpress generation support, and indeed it brought support for PCIe 5 to AM5. But it was memory that was the major driving factor, something Dhir suggested may well be the primary force for moving on from AM5 in the future. In for the long haul Despite AMD focusing more on AM5 and eyeing up DDR6 as a potential reason to move on to AM6 in the future, it still maintains support for AM4. New 5900XT and 5800XT CPUs were launched in 2024, and we had unique 5700X3D and 5600X3D CPUs show up in 2023. Motherboard manufacturers continue to release BIOS updates for AM4 boards — sometimes pushed by AMD, other times by its board partners. AMD was very keen to avoid talking about the future during our discussion, but when pressed, Dhir suggested AMD had no plans to halt AM4 support in the near term. And that’s not just because it wants to string the socket along: It has a very real place in AMD’s product stack, even nearly eight years after its debut. “The way we look at it is we have we we we are covering all price bans in the market and and am 4 covers certain price bands,” Dhir said. “We always think about can we offer something new to them which still operates within the AM4 infrastructure? Still gives them an upgrade path. Still gives them an uplift in the gaming performance. So from that point of view, we we’re always looking to improve.” Does that cannibalize AM5? Surely if AMD was more ruthless and killed off AM4 it would push gamers and enthusiasts still working and gaming on AM4 to move to a newer platform? Jacob ****** / Digital Trends “I don’t believe there’s a cannibalization happening if we innovate for our value conscious users,” Dhir said. “The market is really segmented into different price bands and then each price band the users are trying to get the best out of within within that price range.” AMD PR manager, Matthew Hurwitz backed him up here too, highlighting that maintaining AM4 allowed AMD fans on tighter budgets to continue to improve their system with a modest upgrade. That, he said, was respectful of their needs and available budgets. “I think as an industry, working at AMD and and working with all of our press and reading the articles, we miss a dimension of building PCs, which is it’s not usually a blank piece of paper, right? I deal with a lot of my friends who are like, should I upgrade my CPU or my GPU, right?” They don’t have to worry about upgrading anything else. “When [Dhir] talks about price bands, it’s not just I have X to spend on a CPU, it’s I have X to spend on getting better gaming performance. Yes, [the latest] X3D CPUs are going to give you the better game performance, but maybe I just get an X class and I go up a GPU instead.” Taken to heart As we wrapped up our discussion, I asked Dhir if there was anything else he wanted to talk about before we finished, and he was very keen to reiterate what a core tenet of AMD’s strategy socket longevity is. It separates AMD from the competition, he said, because it’s willing to do it even if it’s a challenge to AMD engineers. “What we’re doing is we’re taking the pains,” he said. “Rather than passing it on to our end consumers and innovating with that constraint in mind. It is just something we believe that’s the right thing to do for everyone.” That’s a noble goal, and one AMD users have undeniably benefitted from over the years. It’s not entirely altruistic—as evidenced by AMD’s steady climb up sales charts and the Steam Hardware Survey—but whether it’s for us, for them, or a bit of both doesn’t really matter. Long-lasting sockets make upgrades simpler and cheaper for millions. That’s a win worth taking, regardless of where it comes from.
