Credit: Thomas Wolf, Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 3.0 de Greek is one of the oldest recorded living languages of the world, with a truly rich history that spans over 3,000 years. While Ancient Greek and Modern Greek represent very different stages of the development of this fascinating language, they are still fundamentally connected, thus we still talk about one language with various stages, rather than two completely different languages. In this article, we will explore the key similarities and differences between Ancient and Modern Greek in terms of writing, pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary to see how much ”ancient” is the Greek language that the Greeks speak today. The Development of the Greek Language When we talk about Ancient Greek we refer to the language that was used in Greece approximately from the 9th century BC to the 6th century AD. It encompassed a long range of various dialects, including Attic, Ionic, Doric, and Aeolic, which later developed into the Koine Greek. Koine Greek (Koine being Greek for ”Common”) became the common dialect during the Hellenistic ******* following the conquests of Alexander the Great. It was also the language that was used to spread Christianity, as it was the language in which the Apostles mostly spread Jesus’ message across the Roman Empire. Over time, Koine Greek evolved into what is known as Medieval Greek and, eventually, Modern Greek, which is now the official language of two countries in the world, Greece and Cyprus. Throughout its development, the Modern Greek language has been heavily influenced by other languages, such as Italian and Ottoman Turkish but never lost its originality and connection to the ”true” ancient Greek dialects of the past. The Greek Writing System Both Ancient and Modern Greek use the Greek alphabet, which has remained largely unchanged over the course of time and through the centuries. The modern Greek language uses a total of 24 letters, each with a capital and lowercase form, similar to the Latin alphabet. In contrast, the Ancient Greek language used only capital letters, with no lowercase. The lowercase Greek letters were developed much later by medieval scribes. This happened because the writers wanted a faster, more convenient cursive writing style as they were using ink and quill. In Ancient Greek, diacritics were also used to mark accents and breathings, whereas Modern Greek has a simplified monotonic orthography with only one accent mark that is called ”tonos” in Greek. Pronunciation of the Ancient and Modern Greek languages Pronunciation is one of the most significant differences between Ancient and Modern Greek. Many diphthong vowel sounds in Ancient Greek became monophthongs in Modern Greek, and the vowel length distinction has been lost in the modern version of the language. Some consonants are also pronounced differently; for example, the Greek letter beta was pronounced as in Ancient Greek whereas it is now pronounced as [v] in Modern Greek (a phenomenon known as betacism). Additionally, the pitch accent system used in Ancient Greek has evolved into a stress accent system in Modern Greek. Two ancient Greek inscriptions in the form of rhyming poetry have prompted new insights into the way the language was spoken in those times. Ultimately, it is not possible to determine exactly how any ancient language sounded when spoken. But one clue has always been the changing of spellings over time — especially in those writings and inscriptions from more ordinary people rather than professional scribes. Classicist Tim Whitmarsh from the University of Cambridge sees patterns and tendencies in these writings that point to just how the ancient language must have sounded. “In popular texts, spelling is more likely to be adapted to the sound of the word and less likely to be tethered to some conservative idea of ‘proper’ spelling,” he states. Adiputra, Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 3.0 Grammar of the ancient and Greek language The ancient Greek language had a more complex grammatical structure compared to Modern Greek. In Ancient Greek, for example, nouns and adjectives had three genders (masculine, feminine, neuter), three numbers (singular, plural, dual), and five cases (nominative, genitive, dative, accusative, vocative). In comparison, the Modern Greek language has nouns and adjectives with three genders, two numbers (singular and plural, with no dual), and four cases (nominative, genitive, accusative, vocative, with no dative). Ancient Greek verbs had four moods (indicative, subjunctive, optative, imperative), while Modern Greek has three (indicative, subjunctive, imperative, with no optative). Furthermore, the Ancient Greek language had infinitives and participles, which are not present in Modern Greek, as they have been replaced completely by subjunctive constructions using particles like ”na”. Vocabulary The vast majority of the modern Greek vocabulary is derived directly from Ancient Greek, with many words being identical or very similar between the two forms of the Greek language. However, some words have changed meaning over time and despite the fact that are still being used, the speakers understand something different than what an ancient Greek would do. An example of this is the word ”symmoria”. In ancient Greek, this widely used word meant a collectivity of people. However, in modern Greek, the word means ”gang,” indicating a change in meaning. Modern Greek has also incorporated numerous loanwords and influences from other languages, such as Latin, and their linguistic children such as Italian and French. Obviously, the Ottoman conquest has also left its mark with many Turkish words also making it all the way to today’s Greek vocabulary. Interestingly, some Ancient Greek words are only used in formal, legal, or scientific contexts in Modern Greek, in a similar way that we see ancient Greek words in English. The Ancient and the Greek Language It is crucial for us all to understand that Ancient Greek and Modern Greek are not two separate languages but two different stages of the same language. Each one of these versions has its own, unique and fascinating characteristics. Despite the differences in fundamental areas such as pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary, the two forms still share many similarities. This is proof of the fundamentally rich history and evolution of Greece. This is the reason why learning either Ancient or Modern Greek provides a strong foundation for understanding the other, as they are essentially two forms of the same language. Trump’s clash with the courts raises prospect of showdown over separation of powers Trump’s clash with the courts raises prospect of showdown over separation of powers DENVER (AP) — Tucked deep in the thousand-plus pages of the multitrillion-dollar budget bill making its way through the Republican-controlled U.S. House is a paragraph curtailing a court’s greatest tool for forcing the government to obey its rulings: the power to enforce contempt findings. It’s unclear whether the bill can pass the House in its current form — it failed in a committee vote Friday — whether the U.S. Senate would preserve the contempt provision or whether courts would uphold it. But the fact that GOP lawmakers are including it shows how much those in power in the nation’s capital are thinking about the consequences of defying judges as the battle between the Trump administration and the courts escalates. Republican President Donald Trump raised the stakes again Friday when he attacked the U.S. Supreme Court for its ruling barring his administration from quickly resuming deportations under an 18th-century wartime law: “THE SUPREME COURT WON’T ALLOW US TO GET CRIMINALS OUT OF OUR COUNTRY!” Trump posted on his social media network, Truth Social. Trump vs. the district courts The most intense skirmishes have come in the lower courts. One federal judge has found that members of the administration may be liable for contempt after ignoring his order to turn around planes deporting people under the Alien Enemies Act of 1798. Trump’s administration has scoffed at another judge’s ruling that it “facilitate” the return of a man wrongly deported to El Salvador, even though the Supreme Court upheld that decision. In other cases, the administration has removed immigrants against court orders or had judges find that the administration is not complying with their directives. Dan Bongino, now Trump’s deputy director of the FBI, called on the president to “ignore” a judge’s order in one of Bongino’s final appearances on his talk radio show in February. “Who’s going to arrest him? The marshals?” Bongino asked, naming the agency that enforces federal judges’ criminal contempt orders. “You guys know who the U.S. Marshals work for? Department of Justice.” Administration walking ‘close to the line’ The rhetoric obscures the fact that the administration has complied with the vast majority of court rulings against it, many of them related to Trump’s executive orders. Trump has said multiple times he will comply with orders, even as he attacks by name judges who rule against him. While skirmishes over whether the federal government is complying with court orders are not unusual, it’s the intensity of the Trump administration’s pushback that is, legal experts say. “It seems to me they are walking as close to the line as they can, and even stepping over it, in an effort to see how much they can get away with,” said Steve Vladeck, a Georgetown law professor. “It’s what you would expect from a very clever and mischievous child.” Mike Davis, whose Article III Project pushes for pro-Trump judicial appointments, predicted that Trump will prevail over what he sees as hostile judges. “The more they do this, the more it’s going to anger the American people, and the chief justice is going to follow the politics on this like he always does,” Davis said. The clash was the subtext of an unusual Supreme Court session Thursday, the day before the ruling that angered the president. His administration was seeking to stop lower courts from issuing nationwide injunctions barring its initiatives. Previous administrations have also chafed against national orders, and multiple Supreme Court justices have expressed concern that they are overused. Still, at one point, Justice Amy Coney Barrett pressed Solicitor General D. John Sauer over his assertion that the administration would not necessarily obey a ruling from an appeals court. “Really?” asked Barrett, who was nominated to the court by Trump. Sauer contended that was standard Department of Justice policy and he assured the nation’s highest court the administration would honor its rulings. ‘He’s NOT coming back’ Some justices have expressed alarm about whether the administration respects the rule of law. Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Ketanji Brown-Jackson, both nominated by Democratic presidents, have warned about government disobedience of court orders and threats toward judges. Chief Justice John Roberts, nominated by a Republican president, George W. Bush, issued a statement condemning Trump’s push to impeach James E. Boasberg, the federal judge who found probable cause that the administration committed contempt by ignoring his order on deportations. Even after the Supreme Court upheld a Maryland judge’s ruling directing the administration to “facilitate” the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the White House account on X said in a post: “he’s NOT coming back.” Legal experts said the Abrego Garcia case may be heading toward contempt. U.S. District Court Judge Paula Xinis has complained of “bad faith” from the administration as she orders reports on what, if anything, it’s doing to comply with her order. But contempt processes are slow and deliberative, and, when the government’s involved, there’s usually a resolution before penalties kick in. What is contempt of court? Courts can hold parties to civil litigation or criminal cases in contempt for disobeying their orders. The penalty can take the form of fines or other civil punishments, or even prosecution and jail time, if pursued criminally. The provision in the Republican budget bill would prohibit courts from enforcing contempt citations for violations of injunctions or temporary restraining orders — the two main types of rulings used to rein in the Trump administration — unless the plaintiffs have paid a bond. That rarely happens when someone sues the government. In an extensive review of contempt cases involving the government, Yale law professor Nick Parrillo identified only 67 where someone was ultimately found in contempt. That was out of more than 650 cases where contempt was considered against the government. Appellate courts reliably overturned the penalties. But the higher courts always left open the possibility that the next contempt penalties could stick. “The courts, for their part, don’t want to find out how far their authority goes,” said David Noll, a Rutgers law professor, “and the executive doesn’t really want to undermine the legal order because the economy and their ability to just get stuff done depends on the law.” ‘It’s truly uncharted territory’ Legal experts are gaming out whether judges could appoint independent prosecutors or be forced to rely on Trump’s Department of Justice. Then there’s the question of whether U.S. marshals would arrest anyone convicted of the offense. “If you get to the point of asking the marshals to arrest a contemnor, it’s truly uncharted territory,” Noll said. There’s a second form of contempt that could not be blocked by the Department of Justice –- civil contempt, leading to fines. This may be a more potent tool for judges because it doesn’t rely on federal prosecution and cannot be expunged with a presidential pardon, said Justin Levitt, a department official in the Obama administration who also advised Democratic President Joe Biden. “Should the courts want, they have the tools to make individuals who plan on defying the courts **********,” Levitt said, noting that lawyers representing the administration and those taking specific actions to violate orders would be the most at risk. There are other deterrents courts have outside of contempt. Judges can stop treating the Justice Department like a trustworthy agency, making it harder for the government to win cases. There were indications in Friday’s Supreme Court order that the majority didn’t trust the administration’s handling of the deportations. And defying courts is deeply unpopular: A recent Pew Research Center poll found that about 8 in 10 Americans say that if a federal court rules a Trump administration action is ********, the government has to follow the court’s decision and stop its action. That’s part of the reason the broader picture might not be as dramatic as the fights over a few of the immigration cases, said Vladeck, the Georgetown professor. “In the majority of these cases, the courts are successfully restraining the executive branch and the executive branch is abiding by their rulings,” he said. The parents worry those responsible for the deaths of their daughters will only receive a fine. “Heart-breaking and just full of anger, frustration,” Ms Bowles said. “They (Laotian authorities) don’t care,” Ms Jones added. “I mean you know lives were taken away.” The teenagers, both from Melbourne, were holidaying together through Southeast Asia. Their parents were with them as they passed away. “We made the decision to turn off all the life support,” Mr Jones told 60 Minutes in February. “And then we said our final goodbye.” “And then she just passed away in my arms,” Ms Jones said. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has since updated its travel advice for Laos to warn of alcohol risks in the country. “Several foreign nationals, including Australians, have been victims in November 2024 of suspected cases of methanol poisoning through consuming alcoholic drinks,” the department’s Smartraveller notice states. “Be alert to the potential risks particularly with spirit-based drinks including cocktails.” Ms Bowles said it was still hard for her to accept the loss of her daughter more than six months on from the event. “We still, still, still think she’s going to walk through the door some days, you know, six months in,” she said. The parents have written to the Lao authorities, including the prime minister, for answers, but have not received any response, the program revealed. “Nothing from anyone,” Ms Bowles said. In a statement from November in the aftermath of the poisoning, the Lao government pledged to bring to the perpetrators of the poisoning to “justice.” “The government of the Lao PDR has been conducting investigations to find causes of the incident and to bring the perpetrators to justice in accordance with the law,” the statement read. Portugal’s election unlikely to yield stable government Portugal’s election unlikely to yield stable government Polls are open across Portugal as millions of voters cast their ballots in a third parliamentary election in as many years, with many bracing for more uncertainty as the vote is unlikely to deliver a stable government. Sunday’s ballot was called just one year into the centre-right ********* government’s term after Prime Minister Luis Montenegro failed to win parliament’s confidence in March in a vote he proposed when the opposition questioned his integrity over the dealings of his family’s consultancy firm. Montenegro has denied any wrongdoing and most opinion polls have shown voters dismissing the opposition’s criticism. Polling stations are open Sunday from 8am to 7pm local time (0700-1800 GMT), with exit polls expected from 8pm (1900 GMT). The election, also dominated by issues such as housing and immigration, follows a decade of fragile governments, only one of which has had a parliamentary majority but which still collapsed halfway through its term in 2024. Opinion polls show Montenegro’s Democratic Alliance (AD) garnering the most votes and probably a few more seats than in the previous election in March 2024, but again no parliamentary majority. “We can’t have elections every year,” 26-year-old bank worker Diogo Lima said, adding the AD should be left to govern even if it did not win the election by a significant margin. Outside the polling station where Montenegro will vote in the northern city of Espinho, some voters queued from early in the day, with one, Irene Medeiros, 77, saying the “best candidate must win” but that she was afraid of greater political instability. AD’s perennial rival, the centre-left Socialist Party (PS), was polling about 26 per cent, behind the AD on more than 32 per cent, in Radio Renascenca’s “poll of polls” aggregator. Political scientist Antonio Costa Pinto said the new parliament would likely be similar to the last, and it was impossible to predict how long the government would last, as it depended on factors ranging from the international situation to the AD’s ability to reach deals with other parties. “The only doubt is whether the AD will form a new ********* government … or whether it will form a post-electoral coalition with IL, even if this coalition does not guarantee an absolute majority,” he said, referring to the pro-business Liberal Initiative (IL) party, standing fourth in the polls. It has some affinities with Montenegro’s AD and many analysts see them as natural partners, but IL’s polling numbers throughout the campaign have been insufficient for a potential alliance between the two to reach a majority of 116 in the 230-seat parliament, which requires at least 42 per cent of the vote. Voter turnout is usually low in Portugal, and some political analysts have expressed concern it could be even lower this year due to election fatigue. The far-right Chega party, with which Montenegro refuses any deals, has been polling in third place on about 18 per cent, similar to its 2024 result, although last-minute health problems for its leader Andre Ventura could influence the outcome. After undergoing treatment in hospital twice in the past week due to an esophageal spasm, he made a surprise appearance at his party’s final event on Friday. Visitors can walk a 425-foot offshoot of the High Trestle Trail that has glow-in-the-dark pavement. The glow trail is part of the first phase of the city’s High Trestle Trail Experience Park project, a segment of the bike trail being transformed into an attraction for visitors with public art installations, interactive elements and new amenities. The park is on a section of the trail between West First Street and South Ankeny Boulevard in the Uptown area. The glow trail is located east of Walnut Street on the High Trestle Trail, south of Uptown Ankeny. A master plan called for more art installations and amenities in the coming years as the High Trestle Trail Experience Park is built out. The $1 million first phase also included native plantings, trees and new lighting. Ankeny is planning to transform a section of the High Trestle Trail into an experience park, including public art and new amenities to attract visitors. The city received a grant for the first attraction, a “glow trail” near Uptown. The cost included a $20,000 grant from Bravo Greater Des Moines. Details about future phases of the new experience park are to be determined and announced in the years to come. City planning documents in 2024 proposed additional work in 2026 and 2028. Delayed retirement ages may require people to work longer than planned, potentially into their late 60s or 70s, while higher payroll taxes could shrink take-home pay during prime earning years. “The middle class should worry about reduced future benefits, especially if Congress delays reform,” DuBravac said. “Certain parts of the middle class likely earn too much to qualify for need-based programs, but too little to self-fund retirement fully. These families will feel the most squeeze.” Story Continues Despite these issues, experts said Social Security is not on the brink of collapse. The program continues to collect payroll taxes and has broad political support, making complete dissolution highly unlikely. “Social Security is a foundational part of the American retirement system, and it’s not going anywhere,” said Rob Rickey, a certified financial planner and chief growth officer at StraightLine. “But changes may still come, especially for younger workers, in the form of delayed retirement ages or adjusted benefit formulas.” While Social Security isn’t going away, it won’t stay the same, either. To ensure its long-term viability, policymakers will need to consider reforms, such as adjusting payroll tax caps, modifying benefit formulas or raising the retirement age. Proposals have been made to gradually increase the full retirement age (FRA) to 69. For instance, one proposal suggests raising the FRA by three months per year for those age 62 starting in 2025, reaching 69 for those age 62 in 2032. Nevertheless, experts said middle-class Americans should prepare for potential changes in Social Security. “As public benefits crumble or decline, it is wise to start thinking about saving more,” said Benjamin Talin, a public policy consultant and founder and CEO of More Than Digital. “So, think about maximizing your 401(k) [plans], IRAs or other retirement accounts now.” Rickey said individuals should minimize their dependency on Social Security by building resiliency in their retirement plan. “You can do this by increasing your personal savings, ensuring you are appropriately investing for your risk level and time horizon to continue growing your retirement assets, and by creating multiple streams of income for retirement,” Rickey said. He added, “Also, do not forget about your spending. Mangeac posted about the find in a Facebook post translated from Romanian, writing that he “did not predict anything would come” of the excursion when he left his home to take a walk that day — and definitely did not think he would come “face to face with history.” “I took my detector and left alone, as I often do, to exercise and to relax in the fields and the forests,” he wrote. I am not Catholic, but I grew up Catholic, but this is just inspiring no matter what denomination of Christian you are.” Also in the crowds was Pia, from Chile, a professor of philosophy at a the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome. She told the BBC she felt there was “a new hope in the church.” Pia said that among the Pope’s first words when he was elected was “Let the peace be with you”, the words of Jesus. And then he said “don’t be afraid”. “He knows what the world and the church needs. A church that is preaching hope, preaching peace. I think many people are waiting for that,” she said. The Pope’s official inauguration followed the Mass, with a pallium garment – a white woolen band – placed on the pope’s shoulders, and fixed in place with three pins to represent the nails on the cross. Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle of the Philippines then placed on the pope’s finger the Ring of the Fisherman, a symbol of the papacy which bears an image of St Peter. Two injured in Columbus shopping center shooting Two injured in Columbus shopping center shooting COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Two people were injured after a shooting at a north Columbus shopping center Saturday evening. According to a Columbus police dispatcher, the shooting happened at approximately 7:30 p.m. at a shopping center on the 4600 block of Morse Centre Road. One dead following shooting at south Columbus mobile home park According to a Columbus police commander at the scene, the shooting stems from an apparent altercation in the parking lot of the shopping center. Two victims — one man, one woman — were taken to local hospitals for treatment, one in critical condition, the other in a stable condition. Police said people are being detained, but their involvement in the shooting is not clear at this time. The shooting remains under investigation.
