  2. What’s coming up this week What’s coming up this week Getty Images Tom Cruise is back in action this week, with Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning hitting cinemas. But that’s not all the week has in store. Sex Education’s Connor Swindells stars in new BBC drama series The Bombing of Pan Am 103, Nicole Kidman returns for season 2 of Nine Perfect Strangers, and Peter Andre’s controversial film Jafaican is coming out. Read on for what’s coming up this week… Mission: Impossible – The Final ReckoningGetty Images The highly anticipated eighth film in the long-running Tom Cruise-led spy action series is almost here. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning hits cinemas on Wednesday, and sees Ethan Hunt – played by Cruise – racing against time to find a rogue artificial intelligence, known as the Entity, that can destroy mankind. Many reviews have been positive. Writing in the Independent, Clarisse Loughrey awarded it four stars, saying she “adored it”. Peter Bradshaw awarded it five stars in the Guardian, labelling it “wildly entertaining”. But Hollywood Reporter’s chief film critic David Rooney was more critical, calling it “a disappointing farewell with a handful of high points courtesy of the indefatigable lead actor”. As ever, there’s loads of focus on the stunts, with the film’s social media account and trailer promoting plenty of impressive sequences, including 62-year-old Cruise hanging precariously off a helicopter. “Your jaw will detach and your palms will leak sweat,” writes John Nugent in Empire. How Lockerbie changed how air disasters are handled By Helen Bushby, entertainment reporter The BBC’s new six-part drama, The Bombing of Pan Am 103, is about the ***’s most deadly terror atrocity, when a bomb in the hold of a flight from London to New York exploded above the Scottish town of Lockerbie, killing 270 people in 1988. A drama exploring what happened in the aftermath, a co-production with Netflix, reveals the painstaking police operation to find out who was behind the bombing. But it also explores the impact on victims’ families, and the huge kindness they were shown by the town’s volunteers. Its cast includes Sex Education star Connor Swindells, Peter Mullan, Phyllis Logan, Patrick J Adams, Merrit Wever and Lauren Lyle. Kara Weipz, whose brother Richard died in the ******, told me that “lessons were learned” in how victims’ families were treated, after she and her family found out her brother Richard was among the dead via a news report. They should, of course, have been told in person. She hopes the drama will generate some positivity after so much pain and anguish. It’s on BBC iPlayer and BBC One from 9pm this Sunday, and will be on Netflix globally at a later date. Jafacian starring Peter Andre is outRadioactive Pictures There has been a fair bit of controversy over Peter Andre’s new film, Jafaican, which hits cinemas on Tuesday. The trailer saw the Mysterious Girl singer donning long dreadlocks and speaking in a Jamaican accent, which led to criticism from some viewers. Andre did not respond to a request for comment from BBC News. But speaking to Australia’s Channel 7, he addressed the backlash, saying: “I think it’s good to get all sorts of feedback.” “For me, it’s acting – I get to do something light-hearted, something funny. Something that is the kind of film I’d want to watch.” The film tells the tale of a small-time crook, Gazza, who hatches a scam in a bid to secure £35,000 for his grandmother’s care. With just 21 days to pull it off, he must immerse himself in Jamaican culture to **** his way between London and Jamaica. From Babygirl to Nine Perfect Strangers Nicole Kidman is having quite the year. She’s already been in Babygirl, a film that sparked hundreds of memes, and starred alongside Succession’s Matthew Macfadyen in Holland. Now, she’s back for season 2 of Nine Perfect Strangers, which drops on Prime Video on Thursday. The show sees nine new strangers, connected in ways they could never imagine, invited by celebrity wellness guru Masha Dmitrichenko (played by Kidman) to join a wellness retreat in the Austrian Alps. Over the course of a week, she takes them to the brink. The first season got mixed reviews, with some critics noting it suffered from comparison with The White Lotus. But others praised the performances, with this season’s cast also including Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians), Lena Olin (Alias) and Annie Murphy (Schitt’s Creek). 5. Where investors can find value Where investors can find value 00:00 Speaker A you actually say the AI infrastructure trade is not over. How should investors be looking at this space right now? 00:07 Speaker B Yeah, thanks for the question. So, um, we think that there’s a the AI adoption and the infrastructure that will be deployed, um, to enable it, that tailwind will persist. And so there are a group of companies, um, that are publicly traded that are likely to benefit from this. And the reason that we have this conviction is first, just if you listen to the first quarter earnings reports, um, from the hyperscale companies. So they all told us that they were either going to maintain their capital expenditure for the year or increase it. So we know that they’re investing. And then the second thing that we see is when we look at the private funding markets. Here, um, there are companies that are privately held that are building, um, large language models. You know, probably an example would be open AI. They continue to raise funds at increasing valuations. We know those funds will be deployed. And also, um, there are private, uh, funds being raised, um, both by private equity firms as well as sovereigns. And here, the investments are going to go into data centers as well as the electric power generation that will be needed to power those centers. And so with all of that money flowing, we think the trade will persist. 00:57 Speaker A And so with that in mind, who are the biggest and best positioned winners as a result of the continuation of that AI infrastructure trade? 01:04 Speaker B Well, the way that I would look at it, I would think about the magnificent 7 and then the other companies. Okay. And so let me first talk about the mag 7. So here, they certainly benefit from um, the persistence of the AI tailwind. And so that would be a positive. But really our view on this cohort is more mixed. And the reason for that is they face sort of unique risks that we don’t see elsewhere. So the biggest one being, um, antitrust scrutiny by the administration, and there are a number of trials that are ongoing, and we think more will come. And then, um, you know, in addition to that, many of them are vulnerable to trade disruption. We know that, you know, AI is something that for national security reasons, it’s going to limit the ability of these US domicile companies to be able to sell into China to the way that they might otherwise. And so that’s another factor that could be, you know, a headwind there. And so we think maybe it’s better to think elsewhere and look at companies. I referenced already the idea of providing electric power or the other equipment that goes into the data centers, and we think these might be better ways to play it. Italian Open results: Carlos Alcaraz beats Jannik Sinner in straight sets to win title Italian Open results: Carlos Alcaraz beats Jannik Sinner in straight sets to win title Carlos Alcaraz ended world number one Jannik Sinner’s 26-match winning streak with a 7-6 6-1 win in the Italian Open final. Sinner, playing in his first tournament since a three-month doping ban, was hoping to become the first Italian men’s singles winner at the tournament since Adriano Panatta in 1976. But after edging a tense tie-break, four-time Grand Slam champion Alcaraz was a class above in the second set, needing just 33 minutes to wrap up the title. Sinner had two set points in the first set but hit a backhand return wide to let defending French Open champion Alcaraz off the hook. The 22-year-old Spaniard took full advantage with some masterful play in the second set, sealing the title with a cross-court volley at the net. “I’m just really happy to get my first Rome Italian Open results: Carlos Alcaraz beats Jannik Sinner in straight sets to win title, hopefully it’s not going to be the last one,” said Alcaraz. “The first thing I want to say is that I’m just really happy to see Jannik back at this amazing level. “I’m sure it wasn’t easy for him coming back after three months and making the final is something insane, so I have to congratulate him. “I’m proud of myself, with the way I approached the match mentally. Tactically, I think I played pretty well from the first point until the last one.” Sinner’s winning run stretched back to October – when Alcaraz beat him in the China Open final. 8. This Bluey app is just as addictive as the show, and now my children can’t stop playing This Bluey app is just as addictive as the show, and now my children can’t stop playing My children love it when I get to write about any type of children’s app. It could be a drawing app, a set of puzzles, or a platform game. They don’t care. The relationship seems to work both ways in that they get to play with a new app, and I get valuable feedback. That is, after all, who these apps are designed for, and other than a parent’s perspective, you probably don’t care what a 40-year-old has to say about these things, do you? The app that my children have been engrossed in recently is called Bluey Let’s Play, and just like the show, it’s incredibly adorable. Developed by Budge Studios, Bluey Let’s Play lets children explore, imagine, create, and play in Bluey’s house. It genuinely feels like an extension of the episodes. Good job, Budge Studios. I downloaded the app and was immediately hit with an advertisement to pay £6.99 for the unlocked version. I thought, “You know what, this time the kids and I are going to be happy with the free version. We spend way too much money on subscriptions.” I was prepared to take a stand. You may like Homescreen heroes This is part of a regular series of articles exploring the apps that we couldn’t live without. Read them all here. That lasted all of five minutes as we discovered that the free package contained an unbelievably limited set of characters and features. While listening to cries and shouts, I took control of the phone, gave permissions for the developers to take my money, and handed the phone back. Peace and quiet. Well, almost. I still had to listen to the Bluey-themed music, but thankfully, that always puts me in my happy place. (Image credit: Bluey Let’s Play) Explore and imagine With access to the whole Heeler family home, you or your kids can explore to your heart’s content. It’s as simple as entering a room and then tapping/dragging different elements in the scene to interact with them. You can hunt for longdogs, play a game of Pop up Croc, and listen to your favorite Bluey tunes. I also love that the voices actually belong to the actors and actresses who play the characters. Every element of the game is incredibly intuitive, which meant my children were happy exploring without needing my input every few minutes. One of my children must have spent half an hour feeding Bluey all the items found in the fridge. Sometimes it’s the simplest things that are the most pleasing. All of this is testament to how well the game has been designed. I loved hearing their delight as they imagined themselves entering into the characters’ lives and creating new stories of their own. With the ability to add Bluey, Bingo, Bandit, Chili, and all of Bluey’s friends and family, it’s possible to create quite a party. Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more. (Image credit: Bluey Let’s Play) Color and create Other than endless pretend play in the various rooms of the Heeler house, the app has a coloring section that takes me back to the early days of MS Paint. Think of Microsoft’s drawing package, but simpler, if that’s even possible. You start by choosing one of the many line drawings that are available before utilizing the fill bucket to make a creation. You can go wild with your own color choices, or if you want to color it in with the ‘correct’ colors, then there’s an additional magic wand tool for that, too. My two children loved creating their own bits of artwork. They would have loved to be able to download the images for printing and hanging up on their art wall, but unfortunately, that functionality isn’t available. (Image credit: Bluey Let’s Play) The app is remarkably simple and yet hugely entertaining. So, if you love Bluey and fancy cooking up some of your favorite recipes in the kitchen, help build a pizza oven in the backyard, or throw a tea party – there’s no end to what you can create with Bluey Let’s Play! You can download the Blue Let’s Play app on iOS or Android. 9. Gary Martin: Does ‘wellness’ really count if you’re not miserably suffering? Gary Martin: Does ‘wellness’ really count if you’re not miserably suffering? As winter approaches and the mercury dips, most of us are bracing for the usual seasonal discomfort — cold mornings, foggy windscreens and the annual return of thermal underwear. But while many seek warmth and shelter, a growing number are doing quite the opposite. They are flinging themselves into tubs of freezing water — on purpose. Cold plunging — otherwise known as ice bathing — is winning over wellness circles across the country as people willingly swap warmth for water that could make even a penguin wince. Fill a tub — or wheelie bin, bath, barrel or purpose-built plunge pod — with ice and water, jump in, breathe through the shock and then sit still while your limbs freeze over. Some plunge first thing in the morning to start the day with a jolt while others incorporate it into workout recovery routines. But behind the brave faces and blue lips lies a frosty question: why are so many people throwing themselves into the deep freeze in the name of health? Camera IconProfessor Gary Martin is CEO of AIM WA and a specialist in workplace and social trends. Credit: Jackson Flindell/Jackson Flindell / The West Aust Part of the answer lies in the changing nature of wellness itself. Health and wellness were once about a balanced diet and going for gentle walks. Fast forward to today and it seems that it is not enough to take care of your body. You have to show you are punishing your body and testing your personal physical and mental limits. Supporters of this frosty phenomenon also point to a range of alleged benefits including sharper focus, improved mood, better sleep, reduced inflammation and boosted resilience. But not everyone is convinced. While some research does support the release of feel-good chemicals after cold exposure, much of the broader hype is — well — on thin ice. On top of that, plunging into an icy bath is a wintertime ritual which seems, quite literally, out of touch with reality. Most Australians spend winter avoiding the cold at all costs by layering up, lingering in hot showers and cranking up the heater at the first hint of a chill. None of this is to say that cold plunges are inherently bad. For some, they offer a genuine boost. But we should remember that in a world which increasingly treats discomfort as a badge of honour, real resilience might just be about picking what is right for you, even if that means giving an ice bath the flick. So this winter, while others are busy tipping ice into tubs and timing their plunges, it might be wiser to think about what wellbeing really looks like for you. After all, wellness does not have to come with a frost warning. 13. Apple to launch new accessibility features for people with vision or hearing impairments | Apple Apple to launch new accessibility features for people with vision or hearing impairments | Apple Apple has announced a broad range of new accessibility features for iOS focused on people with vision or hearing impairments, with the company downplaying the notion that the price of Apple hardware means accessibility comes at a cost. On Wednesday, before Global Accessibility Awareness Day on Thursday 15 May, Apple announced new accessibility features to launch on iOS later this year, including live captions, personal voice replication, improved tools for reading, braille reader improvements and “nutrition labels” in the app store. In these labels, developers will be required to list what accessibility features their app has, which may include voiceover, voice control or large text. Apple’s senior director of global accessibility policy and initiatives, Sarah Herrlinger, told Guardian Australia that the nutrition labels would hopefully encourage developers to enable more accessibility options in the future. “[It] gives them a real opportunity to understand what it means to be accessible and why they should do it and then build on that,” she said. “By doing it this way, we’re also giving them the opportunity to grow into it; maybe there are a couple of the features that they already are doing really well, and they get an opportunity to highlight those as they learn about the other ones and start to build those.” The company also improved its magnifier app, bringing it to Mac and allowing users to use the camera or an attached iPhone to zoom in on screens or whiteboards in lectures to be able to read presentations – with adjustable brightness, contrast, colours and settings that make it easier to see texts and images. New braille features include note-taking with a braille screen input or a compatible braille device, and allow for calculation using Nemeth braille, a standard braille code used for maths and science. Apple’s new Live Listen accessibility feature, which allows an iPhone or iPad to act like a microphone, sending sound to a hearing device. Photograph: Apple The new personal voice feature that can recreate a user’s voice using just 10 phrases is an improvement over the existing model, which requires 150 phrases and for users to wait overnight for the model to be ready to use. Apple said this voice replication would be password-coded and remain on the device unless backed up to iCloud, where it would be encrypted, reducing the risk of someone’s voice being used without their permission. Herrlinger said that as artificial intelligence advancements were made at Apple, the accessibility team was looking at how to integrate them into their work. “We’ve actually been deeply working with our AI team for many years on features. And so as new opportunities arise, we always make sure that we’re staying as cutting-edge as we can to build the best tech we can,” she said. Google’s Android system has some similar accessibility features, including live captions, a braille reader and magnifier, and announced new AI-supported features this week. Live Listen, Apple’s live captions feature, also allows users to get improved audio through their AirPods in places such as lecture theatres. In addition to live captions in this update, Apple also recently launched a feature allowing people with hearing loss to use AirPods as hearing aids. Apple’s hardware often comes at a premium in the smartphone market. But Herrlinger rejected the idea that Apple’s accessibility options come at a price, arguing the company was building them into its operating system for free. “It is available to you right out of the box at no additional charge,” she said. “And our goal is to build in a wide array of accessibility features, because we also know that every person’s experience in the world is unique and so different people will use different accessibility features to support them, whether that be strictly around one disability or maybe multiple disabilities that they have.” Herrlinger noted that customers had said having multiple functions available on a principal device was more economical. “Now they’re all just built into a single device that is the same cost to everyone,” she said. “So in our mind, it’s more about that democratisation of accessibility within the operating system.” Vision Australia’s head of corporate affairs, Chris Edwards, who is blind and has a seeing eye dog, applauded companies for ensuring the accessibility features were inbuilt into products and operating systems. “I would imagine the interpretation of images through the new features will make these more accessible for everyone. Being able to interpret images live is a key next step to change people’s lives,” he said. “The new accessibility features looks particularly good for students in classrooms. I think it also highlights that braille is still a very important format.” Source link #Apple #launch #accessibility #features #people #vision #hearing #impairments #Apple Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  15. FBI identifies suspect in fatal US fertility clinic blast FBI identifies suspect in fatal US fertility clinic blast Authorities have identified the suspect in a deadly car blast that targeted a fertility clinic in Palm Springs, California as Guy Edward Bartkus, a 25-year-old man they say “had nihilistic ideations”. The FBI said they believe he is the sole fatality in the incident. They said on Sunday that he detonated explosives outside the clinic and tried to livestream the attack, but investigators are still piecing together his movements before the explosion. The blast happened just before 11:00 local time (19:00 BST) on Saturday, less than a mile from downtown Palm Springs, near several businesses including the American Reproductive Centers (ARC). The clinic said no-one from the facility was harmed. The FBI had called the attack an “intentional act of terrorism” and believe he deliberately targeted the IVF facility. They are reviewing a manifesto they believe could be linked to Bartkus. Police said Bartkus is a resident of Twentynine Palms, home to a large marine base about an hour away from Palm Springs. The FBI has executed a search warrant on his residence in Twentynine Palms, they said. Nearby residents had been evacuated. Police stressed that there is no on-going threat to the public, both at the site of the blast and near the suspect’s home. The blast was a result of a large vehicle-borne improvised explosive device, sources told CBS. The blast was felt more than a mile away from the explosion. It damaged several buildings, including the ACR fertility clinic with images showing a portion of its wall had been entirely destroyed. The ARC in Palm Springs said the explosion occurred in the car park near its building. The fertility clinic said their lab, including all eggs and embryos, remained “fully secure and undamaged”. But Dr Maher Abdallah, who runs the clinic, told the Associated Press that the clinic’s office was damaged. “I really have no clue what happened,” he said. “Thank God today happened to be a day that we have no patients.” According to its website, the ARC clinic is the first full-service fertility centre and IVF lab in the Coachella Valley. It offers services including fertility evaluations, IVF, egg donation and freezing, reproductive support for same-sex couples and surrogacy. 16. Elton John calls *** government ‘absolute losers’ over AI copyright plans | Elton John Elton John calls *** government ‘absolute losers’ over AI copyright plans | Elton John Sir Elton John has called the *** government “absolute losers” over proposals to let tech firms use copyright-protected work without permission. The singer and songwriter said it was a “criminal offence” to change copyright law in favour of artificial intelligence companies. In an interview on BBC One’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme, John said the government was on course to “rob young people of their legacy and their income”, adding: “It’s a criminal offence, I think. The government are just being absolute losers, and I’m very angry about it.” John described the technology secretary, Peter Kyle, as a “bit of a moron” and said he would take ministers to court if the government did not change its plans on copyright. Last week, Kyle was accused of being too close to big tech after analysis showed a sharp increase in his department’s meetings with companies such as Google, Amazon, Apple and Meta since Labour won the election last July. John spoke before a House of Lords vote on a proposal from the crossbench peer Beeban Kidron that would require AI companies to disclose their use of copyright-protected content, giving creative professionals leverage to seek licensing agreements for use of their material. John referred to a similar amendment that received peers’ support last week, only to be removed by the government in the Commons, in a ****-for-tat process that threatens to mire the data bill. “It’s criminal, in that I feel incredibly betrayed: the House of Lords did a vote, and it was more than two to one in our favour, the government just looked at it as if to say: ‘Hmmm, well the old people … like me can afford it,” said John. The government is consulting on a proposal that will allow AI firms to train their models – the technology that underpins products such as chatbots – on copyrighted work without permission, unless the copyright holder signals they do not want their work to be used. A source close to Kyle has said this is no longer the preferred option in the consultation, although it remains on the table. The other options are: to leave the situation unchanged; to require AI companies to seek licences for using copyrighted work; and to allow AI firms to use copyrighted work with no opt-out for creative professionals. A government spokesperson said no changes to copyright would be considered unless “we are completely satisfied they work for creators”. The spokesperson added that a recent government commitment to draw up an economic impact assessment of the proposals would explore “the broad range of issues and options on all sides of the debate”. 17. Alcaraz topples Sinner again to win the Italian Open Alcaraz topples Sinner again to win the Italian Open Carlos Alcaraz has defeated world No.1 Jannik Sinner again to win his first Italian Open and add another big clay-court title to his resume. Since the start of last year, Alcaraz is the only player to beat Sinner more than once and now he’s done it four straight times thanks to his emphatic 7-6 (7-5) 6-1 win at Rome’s Foro Italico on Sunday. Alcaraz’s victory before Sinner’s home fans snapped the Italian’s 26-match winning streak, which stretched back to October — when Alcaraz beat him in the China Open final in a third-set tiebreaker. Alcaraz now leads the career series 7-4 after ensuring Sinner’s first tournament back after a three-month doping ban ended in anti-climax. The Spaniard also solidified his status as the favourite to defend his title at the French Open, which starts next Sunday. Sinner was playing his first tournament since he won his third grand slam title at the *********** Open in January. In February, he’d agreed to a settlement with the World Anti-Doping Agency that raised questions, since the three-month suspension allowed him not to miss any grand slams, and come back at his home tournament. He was attempting to become the first home man to win the Italian Open since Adriano Panatta in 1976 and trying to complete a sweep of the Rome singles titles for Italy after Jasmine Paolini won the women’s trophy on Saturday. But despite huge home support, Sinner wasted two set points on Alcaraz’s serve when he led 6-5 in the first set and then Alcaraz jumped ahead in the tiebreaker with two aces and held on to seal it. In the second set, though, Alcaraz moved up a gear to earn a victory that will move the four-time grand slam champion back up to No.2 in the rankings on Monday after his third final in three clay-court events this season. He won the Monte Carlo Masters and finished runner-up in the Barcelona Open before withdrawing from the Madrid Open because of injury. 18. NH mom, two daughters share rare medical condition NH mom, two daughters share rare medical condition A New Hampshire mom suffered two strokes at a young age. After she got her heart checked, she decided to get her entire family checked. What the team at Tufts detected was incredibly rare. “I feel like the whole thing happened so that I could have them checked,” said Heather Strong of New Boston, New Hampshire. She’s feeling healthy and grateful now—-but that’s how the New Hampshire mom felt even before she had her first stroke at 47 years old. “My arm was just swinging in front of me and so when I grabbed it, it was all numb and I was like, you know, what’s happening and as I was trying to compute what was happening, my right leg also gave out and so I just fell on the floor and just was there with my whole right side was just numb,” said Heather. Luckily for Heather, after a few minutes she got the feeling back. A nurse herself, Heather knew something wasn’t right, even though she lived a healthy lifestyle and was a former three sport athlete and avid hiker. “I always you know really put my heart to the test for my whole life,” said Heather. “So I didn’t suspect anything with my heart. Like that was the last place I would look at.” Despite not having any of the classic risk factors for a stroke, Dr. Carey Kimmelstiel at Tufts Medical Center found Heather had a couple of holes in her heart—a rare condition known as Atrial Septal Defect. “One in every 2,000 live births, you know the majority of those will be picked up in childhood,” said Dr. Carey Kimmelstiel, with interventional cardiology at Tufts Medical Center in Boston. “And one thing you can say for sure is that the earlier you close them, the better the patients do.” Instead of open heart surgery–in 2016 the FDA approved an ASD closure device–to close the hole in a quick, outpatient procedure. “And we were like the leading center in terms of enrolling those trials and implanting devices in a study that believe it or not went on for nine years and was ultimately shown to decrease the incidence of recurrent stroke,” Dr. Kimmelstiel. Dr. Kimmelstiel implanted the tiny metal device to help close the holes in Heather’s heart—-but little did he know—she wasn’t the only Strong family member he’d have to treat. Heather strong “He was like you can have them checked,” said Heather. “And I kind of took that as I’m getting them checked and you’re doing it now.” Out of Heather’s three adult daughters the Tufts team learned two of them also had holes in their hearts. Both Emma and Molly also decided to get the same procedure as their mother. “So we went on the same day and our procedure was back to back,” said Emma Strong. “I went first and she was after. It was kind of fun. Yeah, like it was a little outing to Boston.” And they also had Dr. Kimmelstiel overseeing it all. “It was very quick, I didn’t feel any pain,” said Molly Strong. Just as rare as the condition, is the same doctor performing the procedure on three family members… “I’ve been doing this a while, a long time, and it’s you know, you can count on one hand,” said Dr. Kimmelstiel. The Strong family is hoping their ASD devices will prevent any future strokes—and keep their hearts strong from here on out after learning a valuable lesson. “I would just say it’s better to know than to not know, like go get checked if anything you have concerns and figure it out, face it head on rather than be worried about what it could be,” said Emma. ASD is twice as common in women as it is in men and there may be some genetic component to it, but Dr. Kimmelstiel says more studies need to be done. By filling holes in the heart, the device also prevents heart failure and pulmonary hypertension. This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available. 20. Grand final heroics just the start for Mariners’ Gomez Grand final heroics just the start for Mariners’ Gomez Grand final heroics and a Matildas call-up are just the beginning for emerging midfield star Izzy Gomez. That’s the view of Central Coast coach Emily Husband after her midfield maestro led the charge in the Mariners’ breakthrough A-League Women triumph on penalties on Sunday. But whether she can keep hold of the 22-year-old is yet to be seen. The midfielder scored the opening goal in the regular-time 1-1 draw and also converted her penalty as part of a masterful performance as Central Coast won the shootout 5-4. Gomez notched seven goals and three assists from 16 games this season, having missed 11 through her MCL injury suffered in November, days after her first Matildas call-up. She is due to head into camp later this week ahead of friendlies against Argentina. “This past week has been amazing to be selected in the Matildas as well. It’s such an honour. So I’m super grateful,” Gomez said. “I’ll go in with a lot of confidence. I’ve definitely grown in that aspect. “That’s thanks to Em – she’s really pushed me to be a better player and step up in these moments. And, yeah, I think it’s great.” Veteran Victory striker Emily Gielnik, who missed out on Matildas selection, gave some timely advice. “I saw Izzy Gomez crying, and I gave her a hug and I said, ‘enjoy that first cap when you wear that green and gold jersey. You deserve it. Embrace it and enjoy every minute, because you’ve had a hell of a season’,” Gielnik said. That will only be the start, according to Husband. “She’s an incredibly special player, and she’s somebody that we know has incredible talent, and she’s still got a lot more to give,” Husband said. “I don’t think she’s still even quite 100 per cent yet. “I look at our season and wonder what we could have achieved if we’d have had her all season. “She’s not only just an incredible player with great athletic ability and great technical ability, great decision making, she’s a phenomenal person as well. “So credit to her, credit to her family, she’ll have made a lot of people proud, not just tonight, but for the last two seasons, and she’s been an absolute dream to coach. I couldn’t ask for a better player.” Gomez is contracted for next season but offers from overseas and elsewhere in the ALW are certain to come. “There’s a lot of options, but still unsure where I’m headed,” Gomez said. Husband is confident she can keep most of her championship-winning team together. “I think they’ll bring themselves together, I really do,” she said. “I look at around the changing room, how close they are as a group and how much they they back each other, and how collective they are. “I think that’s more of a selling point than anything else, to be honest.” Source link #Grand #final #heroics #start #Mariners #Gomez Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  21. Check washing crisis fueled by AI and mail theft Check washing crisis fueled by AI and mail theft Once considered an old-fashioned crime, check washing has roared back to life with alarming sophistication. Criminals are not just targeting personal checks anymore. They are exploiting every vulnerability in the mailing and banking system to cash in on stolen funds. As check fraud incidents continue to rise sharply across the country, it is more important than ever to understand how check washing works and what you can do to protect yourself. Here is what you need to know to stay ahead of the scammers. Join The Free Cyberguy Report: Get My Expert Tech Tips, Critical Security Alerts, And Exclusive Deals — Plus Instant Access To My free Ultimate Scam Survival Guide When You Sign Up! Check washing fraud happens when a scammer steals a check you have written, erases the ink using chemicals like acetone or nail polish remover, and rewrites it to a new recipient. Often, they will change the amount to something much higher. The altered check is then deposited or cashed, and the funds are drained from your account before you even realize something is wrong. Why it’s dangerous: Read On The Fox News App Check washing does not require much technical skill. It can happen with checks you leave in your outgoing mail. Even mailed bill payments are vulnerable if not handled securely. Fbi Warns Of Scam Targeting Victims With Fake Hospitals And Police Unlike digital fraud, check washing often goes unnoticed until long after the damage is done. Because checks can take days or even weeks to clear through the banking system, criminals have plenty of time to deposit altered checks and move funds before victims realize anything is wrong. By the time the missing money is discovered, tracing it back to the scammer can be extremely difficult. This delay makes it critical to monitor your accounts closely and act quickly if you spot any suspicious activity. Fbi Warns Of Scam Targeting Victims With Fake Hospitals And Police Since 2023, check fraud has exploded in the United States. Financial institutions filed 665,000 suspicious activity reports (SARs) related to check fraud in 2023, which is a 134% increase compared to 2020. A 2024 Federal Reserve survey showed that check fraud now accounts for 30% of all fraud losses, second only to debit card fraud. Between February 2023 and August 2023 alone, Americans lost over $688 million to mail theft-related check fraud. The surge in fraud reports reflects more than just isolated criminal acts. Organized crime rings are increasingly turning to check washing as a hybrid crime, blending old-school mail theft with new digital tools like AI. Fraudsters now use advanced technologies to forge identities, alter check images and exploit gaps in banking security, making check washing more sophisticated than ever. As financial institutions strengthen cybersecurity defenses, scammers are targeting physical mail systems as a weaker link to bypass digital barriers. Real examples: Six people were charged with attempting to steal $80 million through fraudulent checks tied to COVID-19 relief funds. In Florida, a former mail carrier pleaded guilty to attempting to sell USPS arrow keys and stolen checks totaling nearly $550,000 to an undercover agent, leading to his arrest and confession. s Fraudsters have adapted their methods to stay ahead of law enforcement and banks. Mobile deposit fraud: Criminals alter check images or deposit the same check into multiple accounts. Synthetic identity fraud: Scammers create fake identities using AI-generated documents to open accounts and cash stolen checks. Business Email Compromise (BEC): Attackers impersonate executives or vendors to convince companies to send checks to fraudulent accounts. Criminals are combining old techniques like mail theft with new digital strategies, making check washing harder to recognize and prevent without proactive security measures. Recent advancements in AI technology have made it easier for scammers to forge realistic-looking documents, generate convincing fake identities and create sophisticated phishing emails. AI-generated fake IDs and altered check images can pass basic verification checks that would have caught manual forgeries in the past. This shift means check fraud is no longer just a matter of stealing a physical check, but exploiting digital vulnerabilities at every stage of the banking process. This Is What You Are Doing Wrong When Scammers Call Here are 14 essential protective measures to shield yourself from check washing scams. 1. Use a ****** gel pen: When writing checks, always use a ****** gel pen. The ink is much harder to remove compared to regular ballpoint pen ink. 2. Bring checks directly to the post office when mailing them: If using a mailbox, make sure to drop off your mail before the final scheduled pickup so it is not left sitting overnight. 3. Sign up for USPS Informed Delivery: Stay ahead by signing up for USPS Informed Delivery. You will receive digital previews of incoming mail so you can monitor for any missing items early. Learn more about why it’s important here. 4. Monitor your bank accounts: Set up real-time alerts for check clearing and review your statements weekly to catch any suspicious activity. Also, ask your bank about any other fraud-prevention tools they offer to protect your accounts. 5. Switch to digital payments when possible: Use your bank’s mobile app to deposit checks without mailing or physically delivering them, reducing the risk of theft or tampering. 6. Use checks with built-in security features: Choose checks printed on paper with watermarks, chemical-sensitive coatings or other security features that make check washing much harder. 7. Limit the information on checks: Avoid unnecessary personal details. Do not print your Social Security number, driver’s license number or phone number on your checks. The less information available, the less a fraudster can use. How Cyberscams Are Draining Americans Wallets By The Billions 8. Store checks securely: Keep blank checks in a safe place. Store your checkbook in a locked drawer or safe, not in your purse, car or an easily accessible location at home. 9. Check your mailbox security: Install a locking mailbox. If possible, use a mailbox with a lock to prevent thieves from stealing outgoing or incoming mail. 10. Be cautious with endorsements: When endorsing checks, write “For Deposit Only” along with your account number to prevent others from cashing the check. 11. Enroll in identity theft protection with check fraud specialization: Choose services that specifically monitor for compromised check details on dark web marketplaces and alert you to suspicious check-cashing patterns. Identity theft protection services monitor your personal data across the dark web and public databases, alert you to suspicious activity and assist you in locking down your accounts if needed. You usually need to sign up through your bank, and there might be a fee, but it’s a smart way to protect your business from check fraud, especially if you write a lot of checks. What to do if you are a victim If you think you have been targeted by check fraud: Report it to your bank immediately and freeze your account if necessary. Contact the USPS Postal Inspection Service to report stolen mail. File a complaint with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) or at IdentityTheft.gov. Time matters. The faster you act, the better your chances of recovering lost funds. Check washing fraud is growing rapidly, and criminals are becoming more organized and sophisticated. Simple habits like using gel pens, securing your mail and monitoring your financial accounts closely can make a big difference. Services like USPS Informed Delivery, Positive Pay for businesses and personal data removal tools provide added layers of protection. 23. War of words over anti-Semitism and university protests War of words over anti-Semitism and university protests As bombs were being dropped on displaced refugees sheltering in tents in Gaza, university students across Australia camped out on pristine campus lawns to protest Israel’s military actions. Whether these sites remained places of legitimate protest or hotbeds for anti-Semitic activity is due to be explored on Monday. The University of Sydney, UNSW, academics and student groups are among scores of stakeholders weighing into a NSW parliamentary inquiry examining anti-Semitism on university campuses. It will also examine anti-Semitic attacks in recent months, including graffiti sprayed on cars and homes and a firebombing of a childcare centre near a synagogue. In its submission, the Australasian Union of Jewish Students said universities had become “flashpoints for anti-Semitic activity.” The union pointed to the proportion of Jewish-Australians who identify as Zionist. Zionism is widely understood as a political movement that called for the founding of the state of Israel, but the union said it was much more than that. “Jewish students may not consider themselves politically Zionist but may still have strong emotional or religious connection to Israel,” it said. “Given that the majority of Jewish Australians identify as Zionist, it is not credible to claim that threats or acts of hostility directed at ‘Zionists’ cannot also be acts of anti-Semitism.” Conservative Jewish groups have lambasted chants heard at weekly demonstrations and on uni campuses as anti-Semitic, most notably “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.” But many submissions by Jewish Australians disputed the conflation of anti-Zionism with anti-Semitism. The stance feeds “into a politicised and divisive discourse which seeks to label any criticism of Israel as anti-Semitic,” the progressive Jewish Council of Australia said. Civil libertarians warned about its impact on political communication. “Conflating legitimate criticism of Israel with anti-Semitism at a time when Israel is justifiably being criticised for failing to meet international human rights standards … is dangerous,” the NSW Council for Civil Liberties said. “(It) treats Jewish people as having monolithic political beliefs, a view that is itself anti-Semitic.” Australia’s 39 universities unanimously endorsed a new definition of anti-Semitism in February. The definition, which includes harassment that impedes Jews’ ability to participate as equals in educational and social life, has been contested by human rights groups as curbing political speech. A Senate inquiry has also examined the student encampments that sprang up in 2023 in response to Israel’s bombing and ground assault on Gaza. More than 52,000 Palestinians, including about 18,000 children, have been killed so far in Gaza, according to the United Nations. It was sparked by ******, a militant group in the blockaded enclave, killing more than 1200 Israelis and capturing 250 hostages in a cross-border attack on October 7, 2023.
