Marine Rescue Port Walcott unsung heroes share story ahead of National Volunteer Week Marine Rescue Port Walcott unsung heroes share story ahead of National Volunteer Week When an alert comes in at Marine Rescue Port Walcott there’s no warning, no warm-up, just a sudden rush to the boat and often, a journey straight into the unknown. For commander Tom Knight, one particular rescue mission sticks out to him since joining in 2017. “We had just got back from search rescue training last year and then a couple days later, we had a call-out to a vessel that had capsized behind Delambre Island, with four people on board,” he said. “We had very minimal information, because the alert was sent out through a message on an Apple watch, the skipper didn’t actually have his phone on him. “The seas were rough because of a cyclone and it was a couple hundred kilometres off the coast. “Within 10 minutes of being on-scene, we came across the vessel with four people sitting on top of the upturned boat. “We got them on board and one passenger was treated for a suspected concussion and the three others were then taken by a nearby friend’s boat back to Dampier.” At just 24, Mr Knight is the youngest person in Western Australia to be appointed commander of a volunteer marine rescue service. Since joining, he has risen through the ranks and earned the WAFES youth achievement award in 2020. By 21, he was already a certified skipper and has led multiple search and rescue missions. Most recently, he was deployed to help remote Pilbara communities recover from tropical cyclone Zelia. “I recently joined up with the Roebourne District SES after the Tom Price storms late last year, we were helping to clean up and assist communities and stations in the Pilbara that needed help,” he said. Camera IconRebecca Thomas and Tom Knight say volunteering is a good way to give back to the community. Credit: Madelin Hayes Marine Rescue Port Walcott training co-ordinator Rebecca Thomas started volunteering with the service a year ago, delivering first-aid instruction to marine and bushfire volunteers, and is also training to become a skipper. “A highlight for me are the training exercises out at the islands that I organise, we get volunteer groups from around the Pilbara joining in too,” she said. “We have mock injuries that we have to address and train for different scenarios. “My favourite part of volunteering here is the camaraderie and being part of something that gives back to the community.” Ahead of National Volunteer Week from May 19-25, Mr Knight highlighted the importance of volunteering in the community. “We’re a small town, a lot of people work for the same company . . . a lot of people have boats and without volunteers like us, people wouldn’t be saved,” he said. “You might not think you’ll ever need it, but I’ve been rescued myself after my boat had taken in water. “If you are thinking about volunteering, get in and sign up.” For those hesitant about their capabilities, Ms Thomas said there was a role for everyone. “We’re always on the lookout for volunteers; you don’t even have to be a rescue member, you can be a land-based member, helping out in the background — there is always something to do,” she said. MAGA Goes Beserk After Trump’s FBI Bosses Say Epstein Killed Himself MAGA Goes Beserk After Trump’s FBI Bosses Say Epstein Killed Himself Two of President Donald Trump‘s appointees to lead the Federal Bureau of Investigation firmly stated that Jeffrey Epstein committed suicide Sunday, causing an uproar from MAGA supporters on social media. FBI director Kash Patel and deputy director Dan Bongino said in no uncertain terms on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures that the convicted pedophile took his own life as he was awaiting trial in 2019, going against a number of popular conspiracies about his death. When asked by host Maria Bartiromo about Epstein’s death, Patel replied that people “have a right to their opinion,” but that the evidence points towards suicide. FBI director Kash Patel said that Jeffrey Epstein’s death was a suicide. / Anna Moneymaker/Getty Images “They have a right to their opinion, but as someone who has worked as a public defender, as a prosecutor, who’s been in that prison system, who has been in the Metropolitan Detention Center, who’s been in segregated housing, you know a suicide when you see one, and that’s what that was,” Patel said. “He killed himself, Bongino said, backing Patel up. “I’ve seen the whole file, he killed himself.” This upset the president’s biggest fans online, many of whom continue to assert that Epstein’s death was a government conspiracy—though few mention that Trump was president when his suicide took place. The most widely believed theory is that the government is hiding Epstein’s “client list,” which people claim contains the names of other powerful men who have also committed similar crimes. There is little evidence of this, though Trump’s current Attorney General Pam Bondi has promised to release a trove of documents from the myriad federal investigations into Epstein and his crimes. Donald Trump, former model Melania Knauss, Jeffrey Epstein, and British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell at the Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida. / Davidoff Studios/Getty Images Bongino took to X Sunday morning after the interview aired to summarize what he and Patel discussed with Bartiromo, briefly addressing his comments on Epstein’s death. “I have reviewed the case. Jeffrey Epstein killed himself. There’s no evidence in the case file indicating otherwise,” the former MAGA podcaster wrote. “I’m not asking you to believe me, or not. I’m telling you what exists, and what doesn’t, he added. “If new evidence surfaces I’m happy to reevaluate.” His comments section was filled with angry MAGA X users, including MAGA podcast host Joe Oltmann, who said Bongino was “not being an honorable person.” “Yet you can’t reinstate the very people who exposed the truth about the institutional rot in the FBI. You are not a serious person. You are not being an honorable person,” Oltmann commented. “You want to stand up clowns while betraying the very people who have served the people,” he continued. MAGA influencer Mindy Robinson also commented: “You work for us? So like….when are you actually going to start?” She went on to call the pair “f—ing sell-outs” in a separate post, adding that “Epstein didn’t kill himself, and the Las Vegas sho*ting was committed and covered up by our own damn government.” Another right-wing influencer, Sarah Adams, commented that she believes “authorizing an outside body to investigate Jeffrey Epstein’s death is something that the public would need to truly trust the findings.” Prior to becoming Deputy Director of the FBI, Bongino spoke frequently about these conspiracy theories surrounding Epstein, claiming that we “do not know all the details of this thing, I promise.” “[The Clinton’s] are knee deep in involvement with Jeffrey Epstein and no one can figure out what the level of entanglement is,” he said. But journalist Julie K. Brown from the Miami Herald, whose reporting helped break the Epstein case, said that those who have worked on the case “say there is no evidence Epstein kept a ledger or a list of clients who were involved with his sex trafficking operation.” Earlier this month, Patel testified before Congress that he wanted to release all the information on Epstein’s death. “We are working through that right now with the Department of Justice,” he said. During his questioning, he also stood by the claim that Epstein hung himself in his cell. Sung Min Cho: Sydney man who trafficked meth into WA to pay off ******** debts jailed for 10 years Sung Min Cho: Sydney man who trafficked meth into WA to pay off ******** debts jailed for 10 years A man who turned to drug smuggling to pay off his significant ******** debt has paid a high price, being jailed for more than a decade. Sung Min Cho pleaded guilty to two drug trafficking charges in Perth District Court after he was arrested in Malaga in 2022 as part of Federal Police investigation into a Sydney-based criminal syndicate. The gang, suspected of trafficking drugs and cash between NSW and WA, had been using Apple AirTags monitor the movements of the illicit goods. It was two of these trackers that ultimately led to Cho’s capture. AFP officers located the AirTags at a Malaga warehouse on September 22, sparking a search of the premises. Cho, 37, arrived at the warehouse during the raid, which also uncovered 5.7kg of methamphetamine in 14 separate packages inside two toolboxes, $615,735 in cash stashed inside a cardboard box, a cash counter, a set of digital scales, latex gloves, a vacuum sealing machine and vacuum sealer bags. Each of the metal chests had an AirTag stuck on the inside. Forensic testing found the drugs had a purity of 80 per cent — a retail value that can run into millions of dollars depending on the amounts in which it is sold. Police then searched a unit at Quest Apartments in Innaloo where Cho, from New South Wales, had been staying and found another $15,000, drug paraphernalia and a small quantity of ********. They also seized a luxury Audemars Piguet Royal Oak watch and consignment documents relating to the interstate transport from NSW to WA of the two metal chests found at the warehouse. The South Korean-born man, who was also found with a key to the Malaga premises, was charged with one count of trafficking a commercial quantity of a controlled drug and one count of dealing with proceeds of crime. The Perth District Court on Wednesday sentenced Cho to 10 years and six months jail, with a minimum non-parole ******* of six years. In his sentencing, Judge John Staude said Cho had visited the Malaga warehouse five times the day after flying into Perth from Sydney. He also found that that while Cho had shown remorse, his offending was not isolated and that he held a “trusted role” within the gang, as evidenced by messages found on his phone that showed he had been distributing drugs and collecting money in WA since at least June of that same year. “Your explanation for your offending is that you resorted to alcohol and ******** use following your brother’s death to the extent that you became dependent on ******** …. (and) acquired a significant drug debt,” Judge Staude said. “You say that that grew to a point where your dealers and their associates made it clear, to use your words, that you belonged to them until the debts were cleared.” In a letter to the court, Cho — who has taken significant steps towards drug rehabilitation whilst on bail — admitted he was “under no illusions about how badly I have failed the community, my upbringing, my faith and my loved ones”. “It is one thing to use drugs and harm yourself. It is far worse to become involved in causing harm to others. I fully accept that what I did helped to lead others down the same destructive path I had fallen into,” he wrote. Cho was not supported by his parents in court, however, Judge Staude noted he’d made major strides in repairing the relationship with his family and retained employment throughout the course of his strict bail the past 18 months. The investigation was part of Operation Phobetor, which involved the AFP, NSW Police Force and the *********** Criminal Intelligence Commission. These trees exist in only one place on Earth. Now climate change and goats threaten their survival These trees exist in only one place on Earth. Now climate change and goats threaten their survival SOCOTRA, Yemen (AP) — On a windswept plateau high above the Arabian Sea, Sena Keybani cradles a sapling that barely reaches her ankle. The young plant, protected by a makeshift fence of wood and wire, is a kind of dragon’s blood tree — a species found only on the Yemeni island of Socotra that is now struggling to survive intensifying threats from climate change. “Seeing the trees die, it’s like losing one of your babies,” said Keybani, whose family runs a nursery dedicated to preserving the species. Known for their mushroom-shaped canopies and the blood-red sap that courses through their wood, the trees once stood in great numbers. But increasingly severe cyclones, grazing by invasive goats, and persistent turmoil in Yemen — which is one of the world’s poorest countries and beset by a decade-long civil war — have pushed the species, and the unique ecosystem it supports, toward collapse. Often compared to the Galapagos Islands, Socotra floats in splendid isolation some 240 kilometers (150 miles) off the ***** of Africa. Its biological riches — including 825 plant species, of which more than a third exist nowhere else on Earth — have earned it UNESCO World Heritage status. Among them are bottle trees, whose swollen trunks jut from rock like sculptures, and frankincense, their gnarled limbs twisting skywards. But it’s the dragon’s blood tree that has long captured imaginations, its otherworldly form seeming to belong more to the pages of Dr. Seuss than to any terrestrial forest. The island receives about 5,000 tourists annually, many drawn by the surreal sight of the dragon’s blood forests. Visitors are required to hire local guides and stay in campsites run by Socotran families to ensure tourist dollars are distributed locally. If the trees were to disappear, the industry that sustains many islanders could vanish with them. “With the income we receive from tourism, we live better than those on the mainland,” said Mubarak Kopi, Socotra’s head of tourism. But the tree is more than a botanical curiosity: It’s a pillar of Socotra’s ecosystem. The umbrella-like canopies capture fog and rain, which they channel into the soil below, allowing neighboring plants to thrive in the arid climate. “When you lose the trees, you lose everything — the soil, the water, the entire ecosystem,” said Kay Van Damme, a Belgian conservation biologist who has worked on Socotra since 1999. Without intervention, scientists like Van Damme warn these trees could disappear within a few centuries — and with them many other species. “We’ve succeeded, as humans, to destroy huge amounts of nature on most of the world’s islands,” he said. “Socotra is a place where we can actually really do something. But if we don’t, this one is on us.” Increasingly intense cyclones uproot trees Across the rugged expanse of Socotra’s Firmihin plateau, the largest remaining dragon’s blood forest unfolds against the backdrop of jagged mountains. Thousands of wide canopies balance atop slender trunks. Socotra starlings dart among the dense crowns while Egyptian vultures bank against the relentless gusts. Below, goats weave through the rocky undergrowth. The frequency of severe cyclones has increased dramatically across the Arabian Sea in recent decades, according to a 2017 study in the journal Nature Climate Change, and Socotra’s dragon’s blood trees are paying the price. In 2015, a devastating one-two punch of cyclones — unprecedented in their intensity — tore across the island. Centuries-old specimens, some over 500 years old, which had weathered countless previous storms, were uprooted by the thousands. The destruction continued in 2018 with yet another cyclone. As greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise, so too will the intensity of the storms, warned Hiroyuki Murakami, a climate scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the study’s lead author. “Climate models all over the world robustly project more favorable conditions for tropical cyclones.” Invasive goats endanger young trees But storms aren’t the only threat. Unlike pine or oak trees, which grow 60 to 90 centimeters (25 to 35 inches) per year, dragon’s blood trees creep along at just 2 to 3 centimeters (about 1 inch) annually. By the time they reach maturity, many have already succumbed to an insidious danger: goats. An invasive species on Socotra, free-roaming goats devour saplings before they have a chance to grow. Outside of hard-to-reach cliffs, the only place young dragon’s blood trees can survive is within protected nurseries. “The majority of forests that have been surveyed are what we call over-mature — there are no young trees, there are no seedlings,” said Alan Forrest, a biodiversity scientist at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh’s Centre for Middle Eastern Plants. “So you’ve got old trees coming down and dying, and there’s not a lot of regeneration going on.” Keybani’s family’s nursery is one of several critical enclosures that keep out goats and allow saplings to grow undisturbed. “Within those nurseries and enclosures, the reproduction and age structure of the vegetation is much better,” Forrest said. “And therefore, it will be more resilient to climate change.” Conflict threatens conservation But such conservation efforts are complicated by Yemen’s stalemated civil war. As the Saudi Arabia-backed, internationally recognized government battles Houthi rebels — a Shiite group backed by Iran — the conflict has spilled beyond the country’s borders. Houthi attacks on Israel and commercial shipping in the Red Sea have drawn retaliation from Israeli and Western forces, further destabilizing the region. “The Yemeni government has 99 problems right now,” said Abdulrahman Al-Eryani, an advisor with Gulf State Analytics, a Washington-based risk consulting firm. “Policymakers are focused on stabilizing the country and ensuring essential services like electricity and water remain functional. Addressing climate issues would be a luxury.” With little national support, conservation efforts are left largely up to Socotrans. But local resources are scarce, said Sami Mubarak, an ecotourism guide on the island. Mubarak gestures toward the Keybani family nursery’s slanting fence posts, strung together with flimsy wire. The enclosures only last a few years before the wind and rain break them down. Funding for sturdier nurseries with cement fence posts would go a long way, he said. “Right now, there are only a few small environmental projects — it’s not enough,” he said. “We need the local authority and national government of Yemen to make conservation a priority.” ___ Follow Annika Hammerschlag on Instagram @ahammergram. ___ The Associated Press receives support from the Walton Family Foundation for coverage of water and environmental policy. According to urologist Dr. David Shusterman, that could indeed be the case. “It’s very unlikely that someone could get annual checkups and not notice a PSA elevation over the past, you know, but this is what I typically would see in a VA hospital, where a patient hasn’t had medical attention in 10 years presents to an emergency room with bone pain, and then they find that it’s metastatic prostate *******,” Shusterman said. Russia Beefs Up Forces Near Finland’s Border Russia Beefs Up Forces Near Finland’s Border Russian forces have been beefing up bases and building military infrastructure near the Finnish border, according to recent satellite imagery, in moves that could reveal their strategy for what happens after the Ukraine war. The imagery, confirmed by NATO officials, shows row after row of new tents; new warehouses that can store military vehicles; renovations to fighter jet shelters; and steady construction activity on a helicopter base that had been mostly unused and overgrown. So far the moves seem to be the early stages of a larger, longer-term expansion, and NATO officials say this is nothing like the buildup along the Ukraine border before Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. For now, Russia, preoccupied with its war in Ukraine, has very few troops along the frontier, and the Finns insist that none of this is much of a threat — yet. But Finland is one of NATO’s newest members, joining two years ago, and the moves no doubt reflect Moscow’s own perception of a threat: This 830-mile frontier is now the Western alliance’s longest line of contact with Russia. Military analysts predict it could become a hot spot, especially with much of it lying in the increasingly contested Arctic Circle. American and Finnish troops recently held an elaborate Arctic war game in this region, with hundreds of troops running around the woods and the Finns zipping through the trees on cross-country skis. The presumed enemy? Russia. Finnish defense officials predict that if the high-intensity phase of the Ukraine war ends — one of the goals of the struggling peace efforts unfolding in Turkey — Russia will redeploy thousands of troops to the Finnish frontier. The Finns think they have five years or so before Russia can build up its forces to threatening levels. But they are confident it will happen and that the number of Russian troops facing them will triple. “We’ll be talking about so much higher troop levels,” said Brig. Gen. Pekka Turunen, the director of Finnish defense intelligence. From Moscow’s perspective, the Russians need to bolster their defenses to protect themselves from NATO expansion, which has always been a sore subject. The Baltic nations were the first members of the former Soviet Union to join NATO, bringing large stretches of Russia’s border up against NATO’s. The prospect of Ukraine, an even ******* former Soviet republic, following suit was so threatening to Moscow that it became one of the causes of the most devastating land war in generations. “The Russian military has undergone a significant force expansion,” said Michael Kofman, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington. “After the war, the ground force will probably end up larger than before 2022. Looking at the planned restructuring of military districts, it seems clear that they’re going to prioritize areas facing NATO.” NATO officials agree. Whenever the Ukraine war ends, one senior NATO official said, Russia would redeploy troops further and further to the north. Russia believes that the Arctic and access in the Arctic is a key to great power status, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive topic. According to satellite imagery, Russian helicopters returned to a base near Murmansk, a port city in the Arctic Circle, after they had not been there for two decades. As Ukrainian drones target airfields across Russia, Russian command has moved assets north, to get out of range. This has put them much closer to NATO territory. Dozens of Russian warplanes were recently spotted at the Olenya air base, also in the Arctic and fewer than 100 miles from the Finnish border, according to the satellite imagery. Other recent activity includes more than a hundred new tents that appeared about a year ago at Kamenka, a Russian base fewer than 40 miles from Finland. “They are expanding their brigades into divisions, which means that the units near our borders will grow significantly — by thousands,” said Emil Kastehelmi, an analyst with the ****** Bird Group, a Finnish organization that analyses the military developments in the north and in Ukraine. Mr. Kastehelmi, who analyzed dozens of recent images for The New York Times, said that the next few years could bring massive changes to the Finnish frontier, depending on how and when the war in Ukraine ends. At Alakurtti, which is also close to Finland, and Petrozavodsk, a little farther away, the Russians have new buildings that can house at least dozens of vehicles. Activity has also increased elsewhere. New tents and military equipment recently appeared at a base about 80 miles from Estonia. The Finns have an old expression: Russia is never as strong as it looks and never as weak as it looks. So Finnish defense leaders have been characteristically matter of fact about the buildup. “The increase of military force in our nearby areas will happen after the fighting in Ukraine quiets down,” said Janne Kuusela, the defense policy director at the Finnish Ministry of Defense. How long that will take, he said, he doesn’t know. But, he added, “That’s what we have to be prepared for.” Source link #Russia #Beefs #Forces #Finlands #Border Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

This Xbox Game Pass Title Is Being Called “9/10 the best fishing experience money can buy” This Xbox Game Pass Title Is Being Called “9/10 the best fishing experience money can buy” Xbox Game Pass has many good games, and some have gained immense popularity like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Doom: The Dark Ages, and more. However, there are some indie games that deserve the same kind of attention. Gladly speaking, Dredge is receiving the love it deserves for having a fun overall experience. Dredge may look like a fishing game on the surface, but huge secrets are lurking underwater. Additionally, the gameplay is addictive for the unique features it has, making it more than just a “fishing” game. For casual time, this game is perfect and proves it’s a good game. Indie games are thriving, and Dredge is one of them In 2025, indie games are dominating the market more than large-scale AAA games. Don’t believe? Look at Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Scheulde 1, and many more. Why shouldn’t they? They are more fun to play, as games should be, and don’t hurt the pocket. People who use Xbox Game Pass get many games to play at a bargain, which is why it is widely used. But are people buying those big games on Xbox? Not so many. However, indie games can be bought as they are made by small teams, and people feel eager to support them. Dredge is a fine example, as the quality it holds for a cheap game surpasses many. It is tagged as a fishing game, but that isn’t all. It combines horror tropes to make a truly unique game. That’s what games are about: being unique and fun. Sadly, many have forgotten that, as Xbox Game Pass is full of games that are flashy with little to no fun content. Moreover, people are somehow happy to have remasters and remakes instead of new fun games. Which is why games like Dredge don’t get much attention. This is a type of mentality that should change. What do people think about Dredge on Xbox Game Pass? Who needs massive triple-A games anyway? | Image Credit: Tango Gameworks Dredge players are completely hooked on the game for being so interesting. Some even say the game is perfect for Xbox Game Pass, even though people mainly focus on ******* games. Comment byu/adjoeby from discussion inXboxGamePass A user on Reddit, going by the username adjoeby, shared that they are loving the game. They even said that it is “the greatest fishing experience money can buy.” It doesn’t mean they bought the game directly; it’s just that they paid for Xbox Game Pass and struck gold. The subscription service from Xbox is getting a lot of praise, too, for the amazing collection of games they released recently. Some of the notable ones are Oblivion Remaster, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and Doom: The Dark Ages. There are more titles coming as well, fans are looking forward to that as well. With so much on the plate, Xbox gamers are getting overwhelmed. At least for the next three months, the subscription service is pretty much set for all the massive releases. If gamers do run out of games, indie games like Dredge are available on the menu. Comment byu/adjoeby from discussion inXboxGamePass If you’re looking for suggestions, you can try Hi-Fi Rush, Hollow Knight, and Sea of Thieves. All of them have amazing experiences, you don’t regret a single moment playing these games. Or, you take the word of the original poster and try out Dredge yourself. Peace. Deputy Premier Rita Saffioti open to mental health round in AFL and sport in wake of Adam Selwood’s passing Deputy Premier Rita Saffioti open to mental health round in AFL and sport in wake of Adam Selwood’s passing Deputy Premier Rita Saffioti says they are keen to have the discussion with the AFL and other sporting bodies around mental health rounds in the wake of Adam Selwood’s tragic passing. The passing of the 187-game Waalitj Marawar (West Coast) Eagles premiership hero, just three months after his twin brother Troy’s death, sent shockwaves through the AFL across the weekend. At an emotional Optus Stadium on Sunday, the Eagles honoured their former player and AFLW coach pre-game, before putting the grief temporarily to the side to claim a 28-point win over St Kilda — their first victory of the season. Amid renewed calls for a special mental health-themed round in the AFL, Saffioti said they would be supportive of both top-level and local competitions introducing it. “We’re very keen to have that discussion with the AFL and all the sporting organisations,” she said. “But can I just pass on, on behalf of the State Government, our condolences and our thoughts with the Selwood family, their friends, the West Coast Eagles team, and all of those around that family.” “This is devastating news, and in particular for the family, I find the grief they’re going through unimaginable.” Camera IconAdam Selwood died on Saturday. Credit: Michael Willson/The Slattery Media Group Saffioti said the whole state was “absolutely” behind the Eagles getting a win on Sunday. “I spoke to (Eagles chief executive) Don Pyke this morning about how the team’s going and how the organisation is going, and it’s a time for everyone to grieve,” she said. “It was very recent, and our respect to the family and all the associates and to allow them to actually grieve what was a tragic situation. The Sport and Recreation Minister said mental health was a societal and community issue which required everyone pulling together to work towards a solution. “It’s unimaginable what’s occurred, the grief of the Selwood family,” she said. “In recent years, we’ve seen more and more people talking about mental health in the community, we’re seeing it more and more coming out in the public and being more open about the issues people face. “We continue all to work together to try and prevent these situations happening. This is a tragedy, and there are tragedies that unfold in our community, and we need to all work together to see how we can prevent it.” Lifeline: 13 11 14 West Coast will be known as Waalitj Marawar for Sir Doug Nicholls Round. More severe storms expected Monday More severe storms expected Monday ST. LOUIS — A new round of thunderstorms is on the way for the St. Louis region, though this setup is not as intense as the storms that hit last Friday. Still, you should remain alert, especially late Monday afternoon into the night, when the potential for severe weather increases. St. Louis radar: See a map of current weather here Sunday night into early Monday:A line of storms forming in Kansas and Oklahoma will move through Missouri and into Illinois between midnight and 6 a.m. Monday. While storms will weaken as they approach eastern Missouri, they may still bring wind gusts over 40 mph, brief heavy rainfall, and small hail. Most activity will clear the area in time for the Monday morning commute. Monday (through 4 p.m.):The morning and early afternoon will be mostly quiet, aside from a few stray showers and occasional breezy conditions. Monday late afternoon into Monday night:Storms will redevelop across Missouri after 4 p.m., especially along and near a warm front expected to sit near I-70. These storms may become strong to severe, particularly in areas highlighted under a Level 3 (out of 5) severe weather risk. All severe weather threats are possible, including damaging winds, hail, and a low tornado risk. As storms move east, they will likely lose some strength but could still bring heavy rainfall. Localized flash flooding is possible in low-lying or flood-prone areas. Tuesday:Storm activity on Tuesday will depend on how much the atmosphere is disrupted by Monday night’s storms. If the storms “scrub” the atmosphere clean, most of the region could see a break. However, if the air recharges with enough instability, another round of storms could develop in the afternoon over far eastern Missouri and southern Illinois. Tornado Survey Update:The National Weather Service has completed its survey of the tornado that hit the region Friday. It was rated an EF3 with winds up to 152 mph. The tornado traveled 22.6 miles and was nearly 1 mile wide at its peak. The most intense damage occurred in north St. Louis City, including Fountain Park, Ville, Greater Ville, and O’Fallon. Damage in Illinois was mainly to trees and rated EF0 to EF1. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed. Nvidia announces NVLink Fusion to allow custom CPUs and AI Accelerators to work with its products Nvidia announces NVLink Fusion to allow custom CPUs and AI Accelerators to work with its products Nvidia made a slew of announcements at Computex 2025 here in Taipei, Taiwan, focused on its data center and enterprise AI initiatives, including its new NVLink Fusion program that allows customers and partners to use the company’s key NVLink technology for their own custom rack-scale designs. The program enables system architects to leverage non-Nvidia CPUs or accelerators in tandem with Nvidia’s products in its rack-scale architectures, thus opening up new possibilities. Nvidia has amassed a number of partners for the initiative, including Qualcomm and Fujitsu, who will integrate the technology into their CPUs. NVLink Fusion will also extend to custom AI accelerators, so Nvidia has roped in several silicon partners into the NVLink Fusion ecosystem, including Marvell and Mediatek, along with chip software design companies Synopsys and Cadence. NVLink has served as one of the key technologies that assured Nvidia’s dominance in AI workloads, as communication speeds between GPUs and CPUs in an AI server are one of the largest barriers to scalability, and thus peak performance and power efficiency. Nvidia’s NVLink is a proprietary interconnect for direct GPU-to-GPU and CPU-to-GPU communication that delivers far more bandwidth and superior latency than the standard PCIe interface, up to a 14X bandwidth advantage, even though it leverages the tried-and-true PCIe electrical interface. Nvidia has increased NVLink’s performance over the course of several product generations, but the addition of custom NVLink Switch silicon allowed the company to extend NVLink from within a single server node to rack-scale architectures that enable massive clusters of GPUs to chew through AI workloads in tandem. Nvidia’s NVLink advantage has thus served as a core advantage that its competitors, such as AMD and Broadcom, have failed to match. You may like However, NVLink is a proprietary interface, and aside from the company’s early work with IBM, Nvidia has largely kept this technology captive to products utilizing its own silicon. In 2022, Nvidia made its C2C (Chip-to-Chip) technology, an inter-die/inter-chip interconnect, available for other companies to use in their own silicon to facilitate communication with Nvidia GPUs by leveraging industry-standard Arm AMBA CHI and CXL protocols. However, the broader NVLink Fusion program is much broader, addressing larger scale-out and scale-up applications in rack-scale architectures using NVLink connections. NVLink Fusion changes that paradigm, allowing Fujitsu and Qualcomm to utilize the interface with their own CPUs, thus unlocking new options. Nvidia has also roped in custom silicon accelerators, like ASICs, from designers MediaTek, Marvell, and Alchip, enabling support for other types of custom AI accelerators to work in tandem with Nvidia’s Grace CPUs. Astera Labs has also joined the ecosystem, presumably to provide specialized NVLink Fusion interconnectivity silicon. Chipmaking software providers Cadence and Synopsys have also joined the initiative to provide a robust set of design tools and IP. Qualcomm recently confirmed that it is bringing its own custom server CPU to market, and while details remain vague, the company’s partnership with the NVLink ecosystem will allow its new CPUs to ride the wave of Nvidia’s rapidly expanding AI ecosystem. Fujitsu has also been working on bringing its mammoth 144-core Monaka CPUs, which feature 3D-stacked CPU cores over memory, to market. “Fujitsu’s next-generation processor, FUJITSU-MONAKA, is a 2-nanometer, Arm-based CPU aiming to achieve extreme power efficiency. Directly connecting our technologies to NVIDIA’s architecture marks a monumental step forward in our vision to drive the evolution of AI through world-leading computing technology — paving the way for a new class of scalable, sovereign and sustainable AI systems,” said Vivek Mahajan, CTO at Fujitsu. Get Tom’s Hardware’s best news and in-depth reviews, straight to your inbox. Nvidia is also releasing new Nvidia Mission Control software to unify operations and orchestration, optimizing system-level validation and workload management, a key capability that speeds time to market. Nvidia rivals Broadcom, AMD, and Intel are notably absent from the NVLink Fusion ecosystem. These companies, and many more, are members of the Ultra Accelerator Link (UALink) consortium, which aims to provide an open industry-standard interconnect to rival NVLink, thus democratizing rack-scale interconnect technologies. Meanwhile, Nvidia’s partners are forging ahead with chip design services and products the company says are available now. Indonesia raises volcano alert to highest level Indonesia raises volcano alert to highest level Indonesia has raised the alert level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki to the highest after it erupted eight times over the weekend. Lewotobi Laki-laki, located on Flores island in eastern Indonesia, spewed volcanic ash between three to 5.5 kilometres high on Sunday, the nation’s volcanology agency said. “Our analysis showed that the activities of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki are still high so we raised the status level starting on Sunday at 8pm (10pm AEST),” the agency’s head Muhammad Wafid said in a statement late on Sunday. Images shared by the agency showed clouds of thick grey ash billowing from the crater. Rumbling noises with low to high intensity were heard from the nearest monitoring post during the eruption, Wafid added. On Monday morning, the volcano erupted again, belching 1.2km high ash clouds. The agency said a six-kilometre radius from the crater must be cleared and warned residents of the risk of cold lava flow from the crater after heavy rains. There have not been any evacuation of residents or flight cancellations due to the eruptions so far, said Heronimus Lamawuran, a local government official. In March, an eruption at Lewotobi Laki-laki forced some airlines to cancel and delay flights into Bali, including Australia’s Jetstar and Qantas Airways. At least nine people were killed and thousands were evacuated when the volcano erupted in November 2024. Nvidia in advanced talks to invest in PsiQuantum, The Information reports Nvidia in advanced talks to invest in PsiQuantum, The Information reports (Reuters) -Nvidia (NVDA) is in advanced talks to invest in quantum computing startup PsiQuantum, The Information reported on Sunday. Nvidia and PsiQuantum declined to comment on the report. Reuters reported in March that PsiQuantum is raising at least $750 million from investors including BlackRock at a $6 billion pre-money valuation. Quantum technology has the potential to perform types of calculations that would stump even the most powerful artificial intelligence systems that use Nvidia chips and could unlock a host of scientific and commercial applications, including cybersecurity. Nvidia’s recent investment signals a shift in its quantum computing stance. In March, CEO Jensen Huang announced a new quantum computing research lab in Boston, set to collaborate with Harvard and MIT scientists, despite earlier stating that practical quantum computers were likely 20 years away. PsiQuantum, unlike quantum computing startups relying on exotic materials, leverages conventional semiconductor manufacturing techniques. The company is working with the governments in Australia and the United States to build two quantum computers in the coming years – one in Brisbane and the other in Chicago. Local rivals go head-to-head in North Pilbara Football League round four Local rivals go head-to-head in North Pilbara Football League round four It was a week of electrifying footy at Windy Ridge Oval in Dampier as round four of the North Pilbara Football League delivered fierce contests against local rivals, Karratha Falcons and Dampier Sharks. Kicking off the action on Thursday, May 15, the women’s clash set the tone for a fiery round. With a strong breeze behind them, the Sharks made an explosive start, dominating the first quarter and never looking back. Their attacking pressure paid off, cruising to an emphatic 10.5 (65) to 4.2 (26) victory over the Falcons. “Our focus was to hit the scoreboard early, and that’s exactly what they delivered,” Dampier Sharks women’s coach Matthew Burgess said. “Ball movement out of the midfield was electric, with Jayda Viti, Tanya Adams, Sarah Dodd and Peta Gilla linking up beautifully to keep the momentum charging forward. “Up front, Tiahnee Pasche and Lilly Dhu were strong targets in the forward line, presenting well and keeping the pressure on the scoreboard. “Down back, our defence stood tall. Kira Gusterson and Bree Pink laid some ferocious tackles and kept the opposition under wraps with a rock-solid effort.” The action ramped up again in Friday night’s reserves, with the Sharks bursting out of the gates thanks to slick midfield play. The Falcons showed grit and clawed their way back to take the lead in the final quarter, but the Sharks dug deep, finishing with a late surge to seal the win 12.10 (82) to 10.5 (65). After a sluggish start, the Falcons roared back into the contest, finishing 13.14 (92) to 10.10 (70). “The first half was tight and if they’d kicked straight in the first quarter, it would’ve put a lot of scoreboard pressure on and made things difficult,” Karratha Falcons league coach Dean McDonald said. “Overall it was a good game but we have many areas of our game we need to work on. “The Sharks are a fantastic side and have been the benchmark for four years; it’s only four games into the year and all sides will look very different come the pointy end of the season.” Elsewhere at Kevin Richards Memorial Oval, the Karratha Kats went head-to-head with Port Hedland Rovers in the women’s clash on May 17. The Kats women were ruthless, holding the Rovers to just a single point and storming to an 8.14 (62) to 0.1 (1) win. The Kats reserves squad followed suit, 15.6 (96) to 9.8 (62). In dominant fashion, the Kats racked up a commanding finish in the league, 21.16 (142) to 9.9 (63). Camera IconKarratha Kats had a dominant win against Port Hedland Rovers. Russia launches war’s largest drone attack ahead of Putin-Trump call Russia launches war’s largest drone attack ahead of Putin-Trump call By Pavel Polityuk and Olena Harmash KYIV (Reuters) -Russia launched on Sunday its largest drone attack on Ukraine since the start of the war, destroying homes and killing at least one woman a day before U.S. President Donald Trump is due to discuss a proposed ceasefire with Russia’s Vladimir Putin. Ukraine’s intelligence service said it also believed Moscow intended to fire an intercontinental ballistic missile later on Sunday as an attempt to intimidate the West. There was no immediate response from Moscow to the accusation. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, straining to restore ties with Washington after a disastrous February White House visit, met Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Rome on Sunday on the sidelines of Pope Leo’s inauguration. Zelenskiy said the meeting was “good” and released pictures of Ukrainian and U.S. officials sitting outside at a round table and smiling. Ukrainian media said the meeting lasted 40 minutes. “I reaffirmed that Ukraine is ready to be engaged in real diplomacy and underscored the importance of a full and unconditional ceasefire as soon as possible,” said Zelenskiy, who also met the new pope. Ukraine and Russia held their first face-to-face talks in more than three years on Friday, under pressure from Trump to agree to a ceasefire in a war he has pledged to bring to a quick end. The foes agreed to swap 1,000 prisoners each but failed to agree a truce, after Moscow presented conditions that a member of Ukraine’s delegation called “non-starters”. The leaders of Britain, France, Germany and Poland planned to speak to Trump before the U.S. and Russian presidents speak on Monday, ******* Chancellor Friedrich Merz said. The four European leaders jointly visited Kyiv last week and have been calling for Trump to back new sanctions on Russia. Asked if it was time to impose tougher sanctions on Russia, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that was up to Trump. “I think we will see what happens when both sides get to the table,” he told NBC News’ “Meet the Press” programme. “President Trump has made it very clear, that if President Putin does not negotiate in good faith, that the United States will not hesitate to up the Russia sanctions along with our European partners.” After a night of air alerts, Ukraine’s air force said that as of 8 a.m. on Sunday Russia had launched 273 drones at Ukrainian cities, more than the previous record Moscow had set in February on the war’s third anniversary. ‘I COULD HEAR THE DRONE’ In the ruins of her family home in the Obukhiv region west of Kyiv, Natalia Piven, 44, recounted how she squeezed into a cellar with her son after an air raid warning, just in time to survive a first wave of drones. They then ran out to a bomb shelter at a kindergarten, before another wave of drones bore down on the village. Their house was completely destroyed. A 28-year-old woman who lived next door was killed. Ukrainian authorities said three other people were injured, including a four-year-old child. “I cannot get over it. I simply cannot. I could clearly hear the drone flying right towards my house,” Piven told Reuters. Trump has shifted U.S. rhetoric from supporting Ukraine towards accepting some of Moscow’s narrative about the war that Putin launched in 2022. But Kyiv and its European allies are working hard to persuade Trump that it is Moscow that is holding up a truce now. Zelenskiy has said he would accept Trump’s proposal for an immediate ceasefire of at least 30 days with no conditions. Moscow says it would consider a ceasefire but only if conditions are met, including a halt in arms supplies to Kyiv. It also says any peace talks must address the “root causes” of the conflict, including its demands that Ukraine cede territory, be disarmed and accept neutral status. Kyiv says that would amount to capitulation and leave it defenceless. Usman Khawaja to play another season with Queensland Bulls despite clash with Joe Dawes Usman Khawaja to play another season with Queensland Bulls despite clash with Joe Dawes Test opener Usman Khawaja will again play for the Queensland Bulls next season despite his feud with the state’s head of elite cricket Joe Dawes. Khawaja was furious with Dawes for suggesting that the veteran batsman had “no hamstring issues”, the reason given for him not playing for the Bulls in their final match of the regular Sheffield Shield season in March against South Australia. “Joe Dawes came out the other day and said a few inflammatory things, which was really disappointing to me as a player,” Khawaja said in March. “Joe said the medical staff had no idea (about my hamstring injury). That is 100 per cent wrong.” Despite his anger, Khawaja, 38, will again play for the Bulls as one of three Cricket Australia contracted players – the other two being state captain Marnus Labuschagne and paceman Xavier Bartlett – named in Queensland’s 2025-26 squad. The squad also includes emerging pace bowlers Tom Whitney and Tom Straker, who have secured full contracts after being elevated from the rookie list. Dropping out of the squad are left-arm paceman Liam Guthrie, who has linked with English County side Northamptonshire, left-handed batsman Bryce Street and paceman Connor Sully. “We wish Liam all the best at Northants under (former Bulls coach) Darren Lehmann and will stay close to Bryce and Connor as they tackle new challenges,’’ Dawes said. “The Bulls have plenty of incentives to build on their improvement last season, and we will back the squad to convert that potential into trophies in the coming seasons. “We’re excited about what lies ahead and look forward to improving as individuals and as a squad in the first-class and one-day competitions.” Queensland Bulls 2025-26 squad: Cricket Australia contracted: Xavier Bartlett (Gold Coast), Usman Khawaja (Valley), Marnus Labuschagne (Redlands).
