  1. ‘Silence from investigation is hard’ says mum ‘Silence from investigation is hard’ says mum Family handout Aalia was studying physics and philosophy at King’s College The family of a 20-year-old student who died in a ****** on The Strand say they still have many unanswered questions about why and how it happened. On 18 March, Aalia Mahomed, from Mitcham, south London, was struck by a van which drove through closed gates and hit the bench she was sitting on in a pedestrianised area outside King’s College London (KCL). Her mother, Samira Shafi, has told BBC London the silence from the Metropolitan Police about the investigation has felt “like a lifetime”. The van driver, a 26-year-old man, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and drug-driving offences. The suspect has been bailed while the Met Police continue to investigate the collision which also left three others injured. PA Media A van driver was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by careless driving Aalia was in her second year at KCL and was studying for a BSc in physics and philosophy. “I haven’t got answers to what happened that day,” said Samira. “It’s been slow. I keep being told an investigation is being carried out and these things take time, which I appreciate. “But the silence is quite difficult for us because for us these eight weeks have felt like a lifetime.” She said she understood the investigation was ongoing and hoped it would reach “the right outcome”, although they were not privy to the investigation or any progress being made on it. “It is hard because we just have the silence. “And that’s hard to get your head around – you try and be patient, but at the same time you want some sort of understanding on it all.” Samira said her daughter was also her “best friend” Recalling that day, Samira said she had arrived at the scene of the ****** within 10 minutes. “I got a call from Aalia’s friend. There was just blue lights everywhere, it was cordoned off. “It is a pedestrian zone and it’s really hard to make sense of any of it because she wasn’t doing anything dangerous – she was sat on a bench in a pedestrian area in some sunshine.” As the area was taped off, Samira was unable to hold her injured daughter. “I was told to stay back quietly because several people had been hurt and so that’s what I did. “But later on based on the time that I got there, I worked out that I was there for nine minutes before Aalia’s death was called. “Maybe if she’d heard my voice she might have pulled through.” Family handout Aalia Mahomed was pronounced dead at the scene on the Strand PA Media Three others were injured in the collision Samira said the past two months had been very hard for her and her family who were going from “being in denial and then reality hitting”. “Aalia wasn’t just a daughter, she was my best friend and my rock,” she added. Trevor Sterling from Moore Barlow Solicitors is the family’s solicitor. He said: “No parent should ever have to bury their child and events where they do we have to have a process which is a speedy one. “Last year I was in touch with the mayor Sir Sadiq Khan and he supported the notion that there should be an expedited process when dealing with these types of events. “It’s incredibly important that we can get to the answers without delay – delay is the enemy of justice.” Trevor Sterling says they need answers with no further delays Samira remains determined “to get justice”, saying: “[It was] the one thing I promised my daughter when visiting her in the coffin.” She added that getting answers would also help her better understand the circumstances of her daughter’s death. “It won’t ever bring us comfort but it will give us some sense of what happened that day,” she said. “Of course we would want answers straight away. “I appreciate there’s a process that needs to take place, but I would hope it’s done as swiftly as possible to get us on some level of clarity.” Samira Shafi talking to BBC London’s Tom Edwards Ch Supt Thomas Naughton of the Met’s Roads and Transport Policing Command said: “Aalia’s family continue to be supported by specialist officers, we regularly meet with them to discuss the progress of the investigation and to ensure they are receiving the support they need. “Our investigation continues at pace and we are working closely with the Crown Prosecution Service. “A 26-year-old man remains under investigation on conditional police bail following his arrest at the scene.” Source link #Silence #investigation #hard #mum Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

The key forward showed symptoms after a heavy knock late in Sunday’s loss to North Melbourne. The Tigers announced on Monday afternoon he would not play in Friday night’s showcase Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous round match against the Bombers. “While he was initially feeling and looking OK and able to be cleared by our medical staff, in the hours after the game he began to develop symptoms,” Richmond football boss Tim Livingstone said. “As a result of this, our doctor has placed Tom in the concussion protocols, and he will now be monitored closely through the coming days and required ******* of time.” Also on Monday, Port Adelaide confirmed Jason Horne-Francis and Lachie Jones were out of action with hamstring injuries. Jones could be sidelined for two months. They were among five players forced out of Sunday’s loss to Geelong, with Cats captain Patrick Dangerfield also damaging a hamstring in the injury chaos. Dangerfield is in severe doubt for Thursday night’s massive home game against the Western Bulldogs, while teammate Jack Bowes also is nursing a hamstring injury from the match. The Power said Horne-Francis could return after their round-12 bye. Port halfback Josh Sinn also hurt his left hip at Adelaide Oval and is in doubt for Saturday’s game against Fremantle in Perth. 3. George Clooney Renews Push to Return Parthenon Marbles to Greece George Clooney Renews Push to Return Parthenon Marbles to Greece “They’re going to come back. I know they are,” Clooney said about the future of the Parthenon Marbles. Original photos from Wikipedia Commons, Adam Carr/ CC BY-SA 3.0/Illustration: Greek Reporter Hollywood icon George Clooney, together with his wife and renowned human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, is continuing his campaign for the return of the Parthenon Marbles from the British Museum to Greece. In a recent interview with Greek newspaper Ta Nea, Clooney expressed confidence about the sculptures’ eventual return: “They’re going to come back. I know they are. My wife and I have both worked to get the Parthenon Marbles back to Greece. We’ll keep pushing until it happens. There’s no question about it.” His comments come amid ongoing negotiations between British Museum chairman George Osborne and the Greek government regarding the future of the ancient sculptures. The Parthenon Marbles, also known as the Elgin Marbles, were removed from Athens in the early 19th century by Lord Elgin, who was then the British ambassador to the Ottoman Empire. The sculptures originally formed part of the 2,500-year-old friezes that decorated the Parthenon temple atop the Acropolis. They have been housed at the British Museum in London for over 200 years. In 2022, UNESCO concluded that the United Kingdom has a moral and legal obligation to return the artefacts to Greece. George and Amal Clooney are vocal supporters of the return of the Parthenon Marbles Clooney has been a vocal supporter of the Greek cause since 2014, when he described repatriation as “the right thing to do” during a press tour for his film The Monuments Men. Amal Clooney echoed the sentiment, calling the campaign “a powerful cry for justice.” That same year, she visited Athens to advise the Greek government on legal avenues for reclaiming the marbles. Amal later co-authored the book Who Owns History?, which outlines the moral and legal arguments in favor of repatriating cultural heritage. George Clooney’s latest remarks were made while he was performing on Broadway in Good Night, and Good Luck, the historical drama he directed and co-wrote in 2005. The actor’s involvement in the debate has not gone unnoticed in British political circles. In 2014, then-Mayor of London Boris Johnson dismissed Clooney’s stance with a quip: “Someone urgently needs to restore George Clooney’s marbles.” He further accused the actor of promoting “nothing less than the Hitlerian agenda for London’s cultural treasures.” Clooney responded with characteristic wit, describing Johnson’s remarks as “a bit too much hyperbole washed down with a few whiskies.” Tensions between Greece and the *** escalated in 2023 when *** Prime Minister Rishi Sunak canceled a scheduled meeting with his Greek counterpart following comments about the marbles’ return. Clooney’s position has been supported by several prominent British actors, including Stephen Fry and Liam Neeson, who have also advocated for the sculptures’ return to their rightful home in Athens. 4. Japanese farm minister apologises after saying he has ‘never had to buy rice’ Japanese farm minister apologises after saying he has ‘never had to buy rice’ By Kaori Kaneko and Chang-Ran Kim TOKYO (Reuters) -Japan’s farm minister Taku Eto apologised on Monday after saying he has “never had to buy rice” thanks to gifts from supporters, angering consumers grappling with sky-high prices of the staple food. After Kyodo News first reported the remarks, made during a political fundraising party on Sunday, other local media quickly followed, sending social media into a frenzy of angry comments. “You are done. Hurry up and resign,” one user posted on X. Responding to reporters’ questions on Monday, Eto apologised for the comments, saying he had misspoken and may have exaggerated to please the crowd. He skirted a question about whether he intended to step down. Footage aired by public broadcaster NHK showed Eto at a lectern making the comments at the event on Sunday, including how he “had enough (rice) to sell.” “I just got scolded by my wife over the phone,” Eto told reporters. “It’s just the two of us so we generally have enough but she told me that when we run out, she actually does go out and buys rice.” The reaction to Eto’s comments underscores the extent to which rice has become a hot-button topic for voters, boding ill for Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s Liberal Democratic Party ahead of key upper house elections in July. A Kyodo News opinion poll on Sunday showed support for Ishiba at a record low 27.4%, with nearly nine out of 10 voters dissatisfied with the government’s response to soaring rice prices. Retail prices for Japan’s staple grain are about double what they were a year ago after extreme heat hit crops and a tourism ***** added to demand. The government has been releasing rice from its emergency stockpile since March to try and lower prices, but to little avail. (Reporting by Kaori Kaneko and Chang-Ran Kim; Editing by Lincoln Feast.) 5. Meet the sustainable fashion startup backed by H&M and Amazon Meet the sustainable fashion startup backed by H&M and Amazon An H&M store in New York City on Nov. 19, 2024. Charly Triballeau | AFP | Getty Images When Gilberto Loureiro spent summers working in a textile factory as a teenager growing up in Portugal, he discovered that he felt “hate and love” for how clothes were produced. The work was tough: Loureiro’s job was to spend long days standing and watching for flaws in woven fabric as it ran through machines at a rate of about 15 to 20 meters per minute. “I really love the textile industry and problem solving, but I hate this … inspection working and inefficiencies and the waste. It’s really one of the most difficult jobs in the world,” Loureiro told CNBC via video call. In the decade since he undertook his first shift on the factory floor, Loureiro’s mindset shifted. After taking a master’s degree in physics, he co-founded of Smartex, a tech company that uses cameras, vision software and artificial intelligence to spot defects in textiles during their production, and therefore reduce the proportion of fabric going to waste. Loureiro claims the technology has prevented 1 million kilograms of fabric from going to waste in the past three years. Waste in fashion Fashion has a big waste problem, with about a truckload of clothes thrown away and buried or burned every second, according to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, a nonprofit. Smartex claims that its defect-spotting technology means 0.37% more garments can be produced per kilogram of finished fabric — which adds up, if you consider that fashion giant Inditex (owner of Zara) used 678,596 tonnes of raw materials in its products in 2024, per its annual report. On top of that, fashion is an industry that’s yet to fully embrace digitalization, Loureiro said, partly because it’s seen as hard to do. Making clothes is complicated because supply chains can be long and fragmented, from growing and processing raw materials such as cotton, to weaving and dyeing textiles, designing patterns and sewing fabric into garments. At the same time, it’s a fast-moving and unpredictable industry. “If this is the largest industry that is still untouched by [the] internet and is one of the largest pollutants in the world, and nobody is working on this in terms of technology [then] there is a massive gap here,” Loureiro said. About 20% of water pollution globally is caused by dyeing and finishing during textile production, according to the EU. Smartex uses cameras and artificial intelligence to detect defects as fabrics are woven. Smartex This lack of technology in apparel production and the potential for the industry to become more efficient has made Smartex appealing to investors, Loureiro said. H&M Group invested in Smartex in 2022, while Tony Fadell — inventor of the iPod and the Nest thermostat — led a $24.7 million investment round with Lightspeed Venture Partners in the same year. Smartex has raised more than $40 million to date, according to Loureiro, but given the industry’s complexity and operations in multiple countries, he said, investors are “brave” to back it. “There is a huge value to capture. So that’s a big risk, being reward,” he added, given the size of the industry, which is estimated to be worth more than $1.8 trillion in 2025. Smartex and its high-profile investors caught the eye of Amazon, which has also put money into the company via its AWS Compute for Climate Fellowship, an initiative that backs tech startups in areas like food security, conservation and climate resilience. Lisbeth Kaufman, head of climate tech business development, startups and venture capital at AWS, launched the fellowship in 2023, with four companies winning a place on the program. “Climate tech startups, they have so much R&D [research and development] that they need to do … maybe even more than … standard tech companies, they have to invent new science or new technology, as well as new business models,” Kaufman told CNBC via video call. Companies in the fellowship are given access to AWS experts as well as advanced computing services, and 20 firms will be selected to take part this year with a total investment of $4 million. Smartex uses AWS technology to train its machine learning models to identify flaws in fabric, which can vary significantly. Payback time Loureiro spends much of his time visiting textile factories, mostly in Asian countries like Bangladesh and Vietnam, where he finds factory owners keen to understand how quickly an investment in Smartex will pay back. “If in 30 seconds he’s not convinced about the ROI [return on investment] payback, in less than one year, for example, you are out of the game … We need to prove to them that they will save in materials, in yarn or in electricity,” Loureiro said. Most of the factory owners who sign up spend “a few hundreds of thousands of dollars” on Smartex. “We need to make sure the savings are much, much ******* than the cost,” Loureiro said. The average payback ******* for an investment in Smartex is nine to 18 months, according to the Apparel Impact Institute. The goal of Smartex is to become an “operating system” for factories in the whole fashion supply chain so that brands can track information such as where garments are coming from, where they are in the production process and how much water is used to produce items. “These are basic questions that are very difficult or impossible to answer by most fashion brands,” Loureiro said. Fadell has likened the potential of Smartex to Apple’s software ecosystem, Loureiro said. “It’s not about the computer, the Mac or the iPhone or the AirPods, it’s about what they can do all together, creates an ecosystem, a layer on top that becomes much more valuable.” Source link #Meet #sustainable #fashion #startup #backed #Amazon Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Jennie Logan, 30, and Martyn Sadler, 38, died while tackling the fire at Bicester Motion on Thursday evening. David Chester, 57, a father of two who ran a business at the site and lived in Bicester, was also killed. Many observed a two-minute silence in the town’s Garth Park on Sunday and Bicester Town Council will open its book of condolence at Garth House from 09:00 BST on Monday. Another two firefighters who suffered serious injuries remain in hospital, Thames Valley Police said. Ms Logan and Mr Sadler were involved in Bicester Rugby Union Football Club’s (BRUFC) women’s team, Bicester Vixens. “We are a tight knit club. We are a family and it’****** the club and the wider community very hard,” BRUFC’s chairman Paul Jaggers said. “Obviously losing two of your members in any situation is really tough and it’s had a profound impact,” Both firefighters worked for Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service and Mr Sadler was also part of the London Fire Brigade. Mr Chester, who ran family business Chesters & Sons at Bicester Motion, joined the estate when it was bought 12 years ago and was described as “part of the fabric of our estate and a friend to us all”. Many people gathered in Garth Park on Sunday to remember those who lost their lives Historic England, which had worked with Mr Chester, said he had been a “valued partner”, who it was a “privilege” to work alongside. 9. Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile is shutting down Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile is shutting down COD: Warzone Mobile is being pulled off the App Store and Play Store Online access remains for now You can redeem your leftover points in COD: Mobile After barely a year on the market, Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile is winding down. Activision has confirmed that the mobile version of the hit battle royale won’t receive any more seasonal updates or new content, and it’s been pulled from app stores as of May 18th. Real-money purchases are already disabled, and those who haven’t installed the app by the cutoff date will lose access for good. The move marks a sudden end to a high-profile mobile release that aimed to bring the full Warzone experience to mobile-first audiences. While the studio says it’s proud of how faithfully the title recreated Warzone on handheld devices, the game reportedly failed to hit the same marks with mobile players as it did on PC and console. If you already have the game installed, you can still access it and play online after May 19th. Matchmaking and online play will continue for now, but social features will be disabled and there’s no timeline yet for full server shutdowns. In terms of monetisation, the in-game store will remain available for now, but only for those with existing COD Points, and nothing new can be purchased. As a small consolation, those with leftover COD Points can redeem them in Call of Duty: Mobile. Currently available running through August 15th, if you log in to Call of Duty: Mobile with the same Activision account, you will receive double the value of your unused Warzone Mobile COD Points, along with additional rewards. For those who haven’t installed or reinstalled the game by May 19th, this is the last call. After that, no refunds will be issued, and the game will be inaccessible. It’s a disappointing end to what was billed as a major expansion of the Warzone universe and quite a bleak reminder that even the biggest franchises aren’t guaranteed long-term success on mobile. If you’re looking to move to something else, here’s a list of the best battle royales to play on Android right now! 10. Scientists sound alarm after witnessing disturbing changes in wild animal behavior: ‘That does create problems’ Scientists sound alarm after witnessing disturbing changes in wild animal behavior: ‘That does create problems’ Wild animals are increasingly adjusting to urban environments through a process known as synurbization. That’s an undoubtedly bad sign — and serves as a warning for how much nature has been damaged by urbanization. What’s happening? A new analysis by nonprofit news site Particle highlights how synurbization is reshaping wildlife behavior across the globe. As the report outlines, many wild species — including squirrels, raccoons, foxes, badgers, and even coyotes — are now more prevalent in cities than in their traditional habitats. These urban-adapted animals, dubbed synanthropes, tend to share several traits: They live in higher population densities, often show increased aggression toward their own species, and have highly adaptable diets that frequently include human food waste. Birds are among the most widespread synanthropes, with species like pigeons, ibises, cockatoos, and more thriving in urban settings. The analysis highlights some wild animals — like Barcelona’s wild boars, Mumbai’s leopards, and Florida’s manatees — as adapting to urban environments in notable behavior-changing ways. Take manatees — the gentle giants love the warm waters around power plants so much that they’ve stopped following their old migration routes and now depend on these fossil-fuel stations to stay warm. With more than half of the world’s population now living in urban areas, cities have become centers of bustling activity — and wildlife conflict. While many humans consider synanthropes pests, their ability to adapt to urban environments is a clear sign of how wildlife is being forced to evolve — or relocate — in response to expanding human development. Watch now: Giant snails invading New York City? Why is understanding synurbization important? In case there was any doubt, synurbization is not a good thing. While animals are surviving in urbanized environments, they are not thriving. As natural landscapes are degraded by human development, habitats become fragmented or destroyed entirely, forcing wildlife to either adapt, migrate, or suffer population decline. This loss of habitat reduces biodiversity and disrupts ecological balance. Increased human activity also brings pollution, noise, and light pollution, all of which interfere with natural behaviors like feeding, mating, and migration. Although wildlife bears the brunt of synurbization, humans are also affected. As the report highlights, some synanthropes can be dangerous to humans, like disease-carrying rats, aggressive stray dogs, and unruly wild boars. Encroaching on territories that displace these animals or force them to coexist with humans can lead to injury, disease, and death. In India, for example, rabies is endemic. According to the World Health Organization, the country accounts for approximately 36% of global rabies deaths, with an estimated 18,000 to 20,000 human deaths each year. Most cases result from stray dog bites. What’s being done about synurbization? While culling and relocation are two common tactics for ridding urban areas of synanthropes, the analysis offers a smarter, more sustainable alternative — redesigning urban infrastructure to better support wildlife. Successful examples of supporting wildlife in urban areas include California’s wildlife bridge over a busy highway and Finland’s native wildflower habitat to support pollinators and local species. “We can get creative with the ways we live together,” Dr. Gillian Paxton, an environmental anthropologist at James Cook University, told Particle. “There is a role for redesigning cities and rethinking urban environments. We need to have cities that are accommodating to wildlife — but that does create problems.” As evidence of this complex dynamic, Particle highlights how some industrial areas are becoming more hospitable to wildlife as pollution declines. As a result, dolphins have been increasingly spotted near power stations in Japan, drawn to cleaner waters. While this suggests environmental improvement can benefit marine synanthropes, human activity still poses risks. For instance, dolphins near Japan’s Fukushima nuclear power plant were exposed to dangerous levels of radioactivity following the 2011 nuclear disaster. This underscores the double-edged nature of human intervention: better environmental management can aid wildlife recovery, but serious threats remain. “When we say we’re living with something, that sounds very passive — like we just kind of coexist,” Dr. Paxton told Particle. “Living together is more active than that. It involves both parties.” Paxton added: “Instead of tolerating the wildlife, we need to cooperate.” Join our free newsletter for good news and useful tips, and don’t miss this cool list of easy ways to help yourself while helping the planet. Intel demos running Panther Lake systems, touts performance and power efficiency improvements Intel demos running Panther Lake systems, touts performance and power efficiency improvements Intel demoed working Panther Lake Core Ultra 300 silicon for laptops, its first chips based on its crucial 18A process node, here at Computex 2025 in Taipei, Taiwan. Unlike the first public demoes at CES 2025 that merely showed the chips powered on, Intel put Panther Lake its paces in real-time rendering and AI applications, showing that the silicon is healthy and on-track for retail availability in early 2026. Intel also shared more information about its performance and power consumtpion expectations for the new chips. As you can see in the image above, Intel also had a Panther Lake chip on display, enabling us to see how the CPU, GPU, I/O tile, and SoC tile are arranged on the package. These chips are thought to come with Cougar Cove P-cores and Darkmont E-cores (you can see the unconfirmed leaked specifications of some of the chip models here). (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) Intel says the Panther Lake chips blend the power efficiency of Lunar Lake with the performance of Arrow Lake-H, noting that while the chips will be in production in the second half of 2025, presumably launched at CES, full retail availability will not come until early 2026. Intel did tease that the chips will come with the next-gen integrated graphics with XMX graphics, but aside from saying the iGPU performance will be closer to Lunar Lake than Arrow Lake, the company didn’t elaborate. These iGPUs are thought to be based on the Xe3 architecture. You may like Image 1 of 5 (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) Intel ran its Panther Lake benchmarks on two Reference Validation Platforms (RVP) that you can see in the above album. These platforms are used to validate the design and emulate real-world conditions. Both RVPs were equipped with a heatsink and fan, so they were presumably operating without thermal constraints. Intel demoed one system running the newly-resurrected Clippy as a large language model to demonstrate that the chips are running AI workloads. The presenter used the system to write game code in Python code. Intel didn’t share performance metrics from the benchmark. Intel also demoed a system running Da Vinci to edit and manipulate video using local AI processing to process the video, enabling fast manipulation of the video clip, such as changing backgrounds, clothing colors, and adding flying text to the clip. Image 1 of 4 (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) Intel also displayed a running developer kit that 300+ developers with ISVs are using to enable software support for the coming chips. Intel demoed the system being used for image editing with auto-coloring and upscaling features, powered, of course, by AI. As you can see in the album, the developer system is quite compact. Intel also had a host of laptops on display from its OEM partners. Get Tom’s Hardware’s best news and in-depth reviews, straight to your inbox. Intel’s Panther Lake appears to be on track for its launch schedule, which bodes well for the company’s immensely important 18A process node. Sam Cook: England’s new seamer on Manchester United, DJing and Fred the tortoise Sam Cook: England’s new seamer on Manchester United, DJing and Fred the tortoise Cook’s most recent winter was the final step on the road to international cricket. Given he has been overlooked for so long, few would have blamed him had he given up and chased the dollars in short-form leagues. Instead, he turned down “a few bits of franchise stuff” to play for England Lions in Australia, and was one of the standout performers in an otherwise disappointing tour. While the Lions failed to win any of their three matches, Cook claimed 13 wickets, a handy demonstration of his ability with the Kookaburra ball in an Ashes year. “I made the right decision to go with the Lions and show what I could do in Australia,” he says. “It’s strengthened my cause for international cricket.” At a time when England have altered their selection methods, Cook’s inclusion shows county performances can still provide a path to the Test team. He perhaps should have been most aggrieved last summer, when the exceptionally green Josh Hull was given an opportunity after Mark Wood got injured. At the time, England director of cricket Rob Key explained the decision was down to styles of bowling, and Cook would have been in the frame had a replacement for Woakes been needed. Cook, therefore, had to wait a little longer. “I just wanted to know what they wanted to see me doing,” says Cook. “It wasn’t a case of kicking up a fuss or moaning, I was just desperate to know how I could improve. “It was never a case of ‘we don’t think you’re fast enough’. It was just trying to push the echelons of my pace as high as I could, honing skills, and a lot of it was just that the guys in front were better, which is true for bowlers like Jimmy and Broady.” So Cook arrives in Test cricket battle-hardened, comfortable with his game and, in his opinion, “in a better place than if I was picked a year or two ago”. At his best, he will provide England with control and accuracy. Holding length is one of his key skills. In the past five years, more than 77% of his deliveries in the Championship have been on a good length, comfortably the highest percentage of the top 10 seamers. “It is not what the ball does but where it does it from that counts,” says Lewis, the former Australia seamer now on Yorkshire’s coaching staff. “He puts the ball in the right areas and asks questions enough times of batsmen. “Batsmen get out in two ways: poor decision-making or bad shot selection. He puts enough ****** in the areas to get one of those two options. He shifts the ball both ways but his ability to hold his length is pretty special.” The last time Zimbabwe played a Test in England, 22 years ago, the series was famous for the debut of Anderson, the patron saint of English-style seamers like Cook. Anderson marked his bow at Lord’s with a five-wicket haul. A choice was put to Cook – to claim a debut five-for of his own, or see Manchester United win the Europa League? “It’s a no-brainer,” he says. “I’ll take the five-for. If we lose, I’ll be telling everyone the Europa League is an irrelevant trophy. Hopefully I can be greedy and can get both.” Source link #Sam #Cook #Englands #seamer #Manchester #United #DJing #Fred #tortoise Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  15. Lewotobi Laki-laki: Indonesian volcano erupts 8 times, with risk of Bali flight disruptions for Australians Lewotobi Laki-laki: Indonesian volcano erupts 8 times, with risk of Bali flight disruptions for Australians *********** holidaymakers heading to Bali have been warned to stay vigilant as Indonesia raised the alert level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki to its highest tier following a series of eruptions over the weekend. CNA reported that the volcano, located on Flores Island in eastern Indonesia, erupted eight times on Sunday, spewing ash clouds as high as 5.5km into the sky. Authorities have since widened the exclusion zone to six kilometres and begun evacuating nearby villages amid fears of further seismic activity. While no flights have been cancelled so far, the development has renewed concerns among travellers, particularly Australians, given the volcano’s past disruption to Bali air travel. In March, an eruption at the same volcano forced multiple flight cancellations and delays, including services operated by Jetstar and Qantas into Denpasar. The region is a popular destination for Australians, with thousands travelling to Bali each week for holidays, school breaks, and weddings. Indonesian officials said that while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is located over 700km from Bali, previous eruptions have demonstrated the potential for ash to travel long distances under certain wind conditions, something that could again impact routes in and out of Denpasar Airport. “Flight paths are monitored closely during volcanic activity,” one official noted. “If the situation escalates or winds shift, delays or cancellations may be necessary for safety.” Camera IconResidents watch as Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki volcano spews volcanic materials during an eruption in East Flores, Indonesia Saturday, Nov, 9, 2024. (AP Photo) Credit: AP The volcano, standing 1,703m high, has a deadly recent history. In November 2024, eruptions from Lewotobi Laki-laki killed nine people and forced thousands to evacuate. The volcano has remained active since, with increased seismic activity leading to the most recent eruption. As of Monday morning, the volcano continued to emit ash clouds, and residents near the crater have been warned of possible lahar floods if heavy rainfall triggers flows of volcanic debris. Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has not yet updated its travel advice, but travellers with plans to visit Bali in the coming days are encouraged to monitor airline notifications and official travel advisories for any updates. Indonesia sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the most volcanically active regions in the world, making such disruptions a recurring concern for regional air travel. – with AAP Source link #Lewotobi #Lakilaki #Indonesian #volcano #erupts #times #risk #Bali #flight #disruptions #Australians Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
  16. A Teenager Discovered a Ring on a Hike—Turns Out, It’s 1,800 Years Old A Teenager Discovered a Ring on a Hike—Turns Out, It’s 1,800 Years Old Here’s what you’ll learn when you read this story: Yair Whiteson, a 13-year-old aspiring archeologist living in Haifa, Israel, discovered an 1,800-year-old ring while hiking near the Khirbet Shalala archeological site on Mount Carmel. Experts with the Israel Antiquities Authority confirmed that the ring features an engraving of the Roman goddess Minevera, and was likely either a personal item or a burial offering. The ring joins the collection of other artifacts discovered at the site, and Whiteson received a certificate honoring his contribution to Israel’s collection of antiquities. Many of the greatest wonders of times past were discovered by accident. French soldiers stumbled across the Rosetta Stone in 1799, Arab teenagers uncovered the Dead Sea Scrolls in 1947, a group of farmers digging a well happened upon the incredible Terracotta Army in 1974—the examples go on and on. Now, a new relic of antiquity is added to this esteemed list, as the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) confirmed the discovery of a Roman ring, depicting the goddess Minerva, by a 13-year-old boy during a hike near his home. Dated to around the 2nd or 3rd century CE during the era of the Province of Syria Palaestina—which was part of the Roman Empire—the 1,800-year-old ring was discovered in Haifa, a city along the Mediterranean coast an hour north of Tel Aviv. The ring was discovered by Yair Whiteson, who noticed a small, green, heavily corroded object on a hike that looked like a long neglected bolt at first glance. But upon closer inspection, Whiteson saw what appeared to be a small figure, possibly a warrior, engraved in the object, and eventually concluded that it must be a ring. Unsure of what to make of the discovery, Whiteson’s family contacted the Theft Prevention Unit of the Israel Antiquities Authority and transferred the ring to the National Treasures Department. After experts examined the relic, they came to an assessment surprisingly similar to Whiteson’s own. On the top of the beautiful ring, which has been preserved in its entirety, appears a naked figure with a helmet on its head. In one hand, she holds a “shield, and in the other a spear,” IAA’s Nir Distelfeld said in a press statement (translated from Hebrew). “Yair’s identification of the figure as a warrior is very close to reality. The figure is apparently the goddess Minerva from Roman mythology, who is also known as Athena in Greek mythology.” Being the goddess of wisdom and war, Minerva was popular throughout the region at the time, according to the researchers. And while they can’t be sure who owned this ring, it’s likely that it belonged to a woman or a girl who lived in what is now known as the Khirbet Shalala archeological site, which rests atop a hill in the center of Mount Carmel and contains a Roman-era mansion and rock quarry. It’s also possible that the ring was offered as a kind of burial offering, as the site also contains nearby graves. The ring will now join the collection of other artifacts that have been found at the site. As for Whiteson, his voluntary contribution to that collection didn’t go unnoticed—he was given a private tour of the National Archeology Museum of Israel in Jerusalem, a seal created from the ring, and a “certificate of appreciation for his good citizenship,” according to the press release. It’s a pretty good start to Yair’s own archeological ambitions. “Yair’s admirable act, who immediately reported the discovery and handed the ring over to the state treasures, demonstrates responsibility and respect for our past,” Eli Escozido, director of the Antiquities Authority, said in a press statement. “He told us that he wants to be an archaeologist in the future, and we reserve a place of honor for him here.” You Might Also Like Source link #Teenager #Discovered #Ring #HikeTurns #Years Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Colombian model’s *******, just days after ******** influencer shot on live stream, sparks condemnation of femicide Colombian model’s *******, just days after ******** influencer shot on live stream, sparks condemnation of femicide The ******* of a 22-year-old model and influencer in Colombia has sent shock waves through the country and drawn parallels to the killing of a ******** influencer last week, highlighting the high rates of femicide in Latin America. Maria Jose Estupinan, a university student in Colombia’s northeastern city of Cucuta, close to the Venezuela border, was killed on May 15, according to Magda Victoria Acosta, president of the National Gender Commission of the Colombian Judiciary. Speaking at a news conference, Acosta said the suspect, disguised as a delivery man, shot Estupinan in her home when she opened the door. “She was a young, enterprising woman with a whole life ahead of her, but those dreams are cut short like the dreams of many women in this country,” Acosta said. Estupinan had been the victim of a domestic violence case and was about to receive compensation for it, Acosta added. She said the commission “very strongly” condemned the crime and would work to deliver justice. Authorities are investigating the killing. CNN has reached out to the Colombian National Police and prosecutor’s office for more information. Estupinan’s Facebook page showed photos of her travels and daily life, including trips to New York and California, and of her posing by the pool or at the gym. The case has been covered widely by local media and spread on social media, with many comparing it to the May 13 shooting of 23-year-old beauty influencer Valeria Marquez in Mexico. Just days before Estupinan’s death, Marquez was killed during a live stream at a salon by a male intruder. Officials in Mexico’s Jalisco state said they are investigating Marquez’s death as a suspected femicide – the killing of a woman or girl for gender-based reasons. While not all homicides involving women are femicides, many are. In 2020, a quarter of female killings in Mexico were investigated as femicides, with cases reported in each one of the country’s 32 states, according to Amnesty International. Acosta did not say whether Estupinan’s death was a suspected femicide – but her killing has highlighted the sheer scale of violence against women in Colombia. Gender-based violence in the country is widespread, including by armed groups, according to non-profit organization Human Rights Watch. Survivors face many obstacles in seeking care or justice, and perpetrators are rarely held accountable, the group noted in its World Report 2024. Colombia’s National Gender Commission has logged thousands of cases of gender and domestic violence, including high rates of ******* violence, neglect, abandonment and psychological violence, Acosta said. Some 41 women were reported missing in Colombia between January and August last year – with 34 cases in Cucuta, where Estupinan lived, Acosta said. Many of the women were minors. Northeast Colombia has been particularly volatile in recent months, with a sharp rise in fighting between militant factions. Escalating violence in the Catatumbo region displaced tens of thousands of people in January, many of whom flocked to Cucuta, where Colombia’s military deployed thousands of soldiers and special forces. Dallas police said that Kistler “reached out and brushed his hand along the passenger side of a passing Mercedes as they were walking across the street.” Investigators said that 34-year-old Kendrick Finch then exited the passenger side of the vehicle with a gun and opened fire. The affidavit states, according to FOX 4, that Kistler reached into Long’s purse and pulled out his gun, and that’s when police say Finch opened fire, striking both Long and Kistler. NSW government urges support to end housing crisis NSW government urges support to end housing crisis The NSW Treasurer has used his first major speech since the *********** federal election to call for help to tackle the “punishing” housing market. Ahead of the June 24 NSW budget, Daniel Mookhey used his speech at the McKell Institute to address the state’s housing concern and how his government could “eagerly” work with the federal government to get more people into a home. Camera IconNSW will need to build more houses to deal with the crisis. NewsWire Credit: News Corp Australia “We will use the next budget to take the next steps forward in building the homes we need to make sure we can house the people we cannot do without to keep our economy humming,” he said. Mr Mookhey welcomed the re-election of federal Labor Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and said his Help to Buy housing scheme would open new paths to home ownership for working families. Under the scheme, the federal government will spend $6.3bn to help 40,000 low to middle income households buy a property by going guarantor for up to 18 per cent of buyers’ home loans. Mr Mookhey flagged the high price of rent, saying the stress is not sustainable for individuals, families and the broader economy. “Housing is shelter, it is security. It is where people make a home and a life. It is where people find connection. It also makes a big difference to economic mobility,” he said. “The home you live in determines the job you can reach, the school your child attends, and the support network around you. “But right now, housing insecurity is acting as a drag on productivity and a barrier to belonging.” Camera IconThe NSW government applauded the federal government’s Help to Buy scheme. NewsWire / Andrew Henshaw Credit: News Corp Australia He said part of the solution was delivering zoning reforms so more houses could be built near existing infrastructure projects. “We’re continuing that push through our low and mid-rise housing policy – and we are standing firm against efforts by councils and others to delay or dilute supply where demand is strong,” Mr Mookhey said. “We are tackling this from every angle: the largest investment in social housing since World War II, stronger protections for renters, record increases to homelessness services.” Mr Mookhey called on the federal Albanese government to use its landslide victory to help fund major infrastructure projects in order to boost NSW productivity while ultimately saving in the long term. “Construction costs are rising, planning delays are slowing delivery, and the construction workers we need to literally build our brighter future are increasingly scarce,” Mr Mookhey said. “Which means … the time to build is now. To boost investment, we need to get projects built faster.” According to Mr Mookhey, businesses are delaying investing in NSW because of major project delays, which are stopping more private sector investment from unlocking the “next great era of *********** economic growth”. “Getting major projects – the projects that drive productivity – getting them done in NSW is taking too long,” Mr Mookhey said. “The task begs us all to support investment in infrastructure and technology so our workers have the very best tools of trade (and) to encourage regulatory experimentation to boost efficiency and innovation so we have a smart state instead of a slow state.” Source link #NSW #government #urges #support #housing #crisis Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
