  1. Ridge Racer re-release announced for Switch 2 is also coming to Switch, PlayStation and Xbox Ridge Racer re-release announced for Switch 2 is also coming to Switch, PlayStation and Xbox Hamster Corporation has confirmed the price and formats for the upcoming re-release of the original arcade version of Ridge Racer. Hamster, which has been releasing retro arcade games under its Arcade Archives series for the past decade, is launching a new series called Arcade Archives 2. The company previously confirmed that the first game in this new series is Ridge Racer, which will be coming to Switch 2 on the same day the console releases, June 5. However, Hamster has also confirmed that the Arcade Archives 2 series will be coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S too, with Ridge Racer releasing on these formats on June 5 as well. It also confirmed that the original Arcade Archives series will also be getting Ridge Racer on the same date, meaning PS4 and Switch owners will be able to buy it too. According to Hamster, the Arcade Archives version of the game on Switch and PS4 will cost $14.99, while the Arcade Archives 2 version on Switch 2, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S will cost $16.99. The publisher also notes that players who buy the PS4 or Switch version will be able to upgrade to the Switch 2 or PS5 version for $2.99. Each Arcade Archives game features Original Mode, High Score Mode (where you keep playing until you die) and Caravan Mode (where you have to get the highest score within a certain time). Arcade Archives 2 games will also add Time Attack Mode (where you try to reach and defeat the final boss as quickly as possible) and Network Mode (where you can play online). However, Ridge Racer won’t have Network Mode because it’s a single-player release. The Arcade Archives 2 version will also include multiple save slots, a rewind feature and VRR support enabling a “more accurate reproduction of the original arcade game’s experience”. To date there have been 362 games released in the Arcade Archives series, with a further 108 released in a separate series called ACA Neo Geo. Virtually all of these games have been sprite-based titles, meaning the polygonal Ridge Racer marks a notable change in direction for Hamster Corporation, alongside the launch of the new Arcade Archives 2 series. 2. Scattered Spider is focus of NCA inquiry into cyber-attacks against *** retailers | Hacking Scattered Spider is focus of NCA inquiry into cyber-attacks against *** retailers | Hacking A hacker community known as Scattered Spider is a key suspect in a criminal inquiry into cyber-attacks against *** retailers including Marks & Spencer, detectives have said. Scattered Spider, a loose collective of native English-speaking cybercriminals, has been strongly linked with a trio of hacks against M&S, the Co-op and Harrods. M&S said on Wednesday it will take an estimated £300m hit to profits after its systems were hacked last month. The ***’s National Crime Agency, whose remit includes combating cybercrime, said the group was a focus in its investigations. “We are looking at the group that is publicly known as Scattered Spider, but we’ve got a range of different hypotheses and we’ll follow the evidence to get to the offenders,” Paul Foster, head of the NCA’s national cybercrime unit, told the BBC. He added: “In light of all the damage that we’re seeing, catching whoever is behind these attacks is our top priority.” Last week Google told the Guardian that ***-based members of Scattered Spider were actively “facilitating” cyber-attacks, as it warned that attempts to enter *** retailers’ systems were now being replicated in the US. The focus on a particular industry and geography is a common tactic of the Scattered Spider community, which communicates on platforms such as Discord and Telegram. The M&S hackers have deployed ransomware, or malicious software that locks up a target’s files, which is a cybercrime typically associated with Russian-speaking gangs and not native English speakers based in the *** or US. “We know that Scattered Spider are largely English-speaking but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re in the ***. We know that they communicate online among themselves in a range of different platforms and channels, which is, I guess, key to their ability to then be able to operate as a collective,” said Foster. It has been reported that the hackers have used ransomware called DragonForce, in a ransomware-as-a-service operation where hackers use another group’s malware and infrastructure in exchange for a cut of any financial proceeds from the attack. Ransomware attackers demand a sum, usually paid in cryptocurrency, in exchange for unlocking any hacked files and returning stolen data. skip past newsletter promotion A weekly dive in to how technology is shaping our lives Privacy Notice: Newsletters may contain info about charities, online ads, and content funded by outside parties. All of the accused were in their 20s at the time they were charged. It charged four people in the US, their ages ranging from 20 to 25, as well as Tyler Buchanan, a Scottish 23-year-old who has been deported to the US from Spain. Google also said that “younger members” of the network carry out some tasks, such as ringing up a company’s IT help desk and pretending to be an employee or contractor in order to gain access to computer systems. 3. WA Education Minister Sabine Winton teaches next generation in Fitzroy Crossing where her career began WA Education Minister Sabine Winton teaches next generation in Fitzroy Crossing where her career began When Sabine Winton arrived in Fitzroy Crossing as a bright, second-year teacher in the 1990s she was keen to put her training into practice. Lttle did she know she was about to receive an education of her own. Three decades on, the Education Minister recently returned to the Kimberley town she credits with being, “the personal and professional making” of her so that she could reconnect with the people who taught her that to be a successful teacher in the bush you need to bring the community with you. Ms Winton was welcomed at Fitzroy Crossing District High School and she even taught a few lessons to the students, some of whom were the children of the pupils she had taught between 1991 and 1993. “There’s no question that those three years in Fitzroy Crossing were the personal and professional making of me and has shaped my worldview, has shaped everything I’ve done since,” Ms Winton said after the trip. “It’s something quite magical when you can live and work in a community, and you stay connected to that community for the entire week, the entire year, as opposed to a metropolitan setting where you go and do your work and then you go and live a separate life. Camera IconSabine Winton when teaching at Fitzroy Crossing District High School in 1991. Credit: Supplied/Supplied “It shaped my teaching career onwards, and also my political career, because really, to be a successful teacher, it’s about connecting with the students, and it’s about connecting with parents. And that’s so important, particularly in a setting like Fitzroy, you need to bring community with you.” During the school visit she reconnected with former colleague Robyn Long who was the Aboriginal and Islander education officer in the 1990s and a person Ms Winton credits with helping her succeed with the students. “She’s still working at that school some 30-odd years later. My success in classrooms and Fitzroy was really very much based on relationships with community and Aboriginal people, so that I could meet the Aboriginal kids from where they’re coming from and that’s really, really important,” she said. Bunuba elder Patsy Ngalu Bedford said it was a heartwarming reunion for the entire community. “She did have an impact in Fitzroy when she was a teacher,” Ms Bedford said. Camera IconSabine Winton on an excursion to WA Parliament House with students from Fitzroy District High School in the 1990s. Credit: Supplied/Supplied “It’s so exciting and to now be a minister in that field where she first started off, we’re very fortunate, and honored that she’s climbed into that space of being Minister for Education, because she’s come from the ground up.” “She’s been there, she’s done it. Now she’s at a level where we know she understands the struggles that the system brings into the education field, because she’s been part of it,” Ms Bedford said. The elder was also delighted to see her nine-year-old granddaughter receiving a lesson from Ms Winton just as her own mother had in the 1990s. “She said, ‘I like her, I want her to be my teacher,” Ms Bedford recounted. After the school visit Ms Winton was at the opening of the new kitchen for Marra Worra Worra Aboriginal Corporation’s Night Place program. The initiative offers a hot meal, activities and a lift home for young people in Fitzroy Crossing with the aim of keeping them off the streets and out of trouble. “They’re doing an incredible job in engaging with disconnected kids, giving them not only a safe space, but a place where they can actually talk, connect, and from that start that journey back into trying to get them back into school. “I’m really looking forward to continuing to support Marra Worra Worra’s work so that we can also see those positive impacts back in school and getting those kids engaged in school,” she said. Ms Winton’s visit to Fitzroy Crossing was part of her first Kimberley trip as Education Minister where she attended the Cross-sectoral Kimberley School Leadership Team Conference. “There are a number of schools in the Kimberley, some Department of Education, some Catholic Education and some independent. Each of those schools do tremendous work. It’s really great for all those sectors to be able to get together to celebrate and share their successes and also talk about their challenges,” she said. With many parts of regional WA suffering from skills shortages of essential workers Ms Winton said she hoped as Education Minister to encourage more teachers to take on remote posting, such as in the Kimberley. “I’ve never met a policeman, a nurse or a teacher yet who doesn’t reflect anything but positively on their time in community, and so we’ve got great teachers doing incredible work in remote and regional places in the Kimberley, and we want to improve on that,” she said. “We want to get more people up here, and we want more people to stay longer and make a commitment to community.” Source link #Education #Minister #Sabine #Winton #teaches #generation #Fitzroy #Crossing #career #began Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  4. Mario + Rabbids developer Ubisoft Milan hiring for ‘AAA Rayman game’ Mario + Rabbids developer Ubisoft Milan hiring for ‘AAA Rayman game’ Mario + Rabbids studio Ubisoft Milan is staffing up for what it describes as a “AAA” Rayman game. References to the title can be found in now-removed job ads, which were spotted and archived by Reddit users. “Ubisoft Milan is seeking a talented 3D Gameplay Animator to be involved in the production of a prestigious AAA title for the Rayman brand,” one job ad reads. “You will be responsible for ensuring the quality and content of gameplay animation assets align with the game’s vision.” Ubisoft first mentioned plans for a Rayman return last year, when it confirmed it had started an “exploration” into reviving the franchise with its Milan and Montpellier studios. At the time, it said Rayman and Beyond Good and Evil creator Michel Ancel, who left the company in 2020, is consulting on the project. Ubisoft Milan is staffing up for a new Rayman game. “We are pleased to confirm Ubisoft Montpellier and Ubisoft Milan have recently started an exploration phase on the Rayman brand,” said a spokesperson for Ubisoft. “The project is still in its early stages, and we will share more details later.” The fifth and most recent entry in Ubisoft’s platforming series was 2013’s Rayman Legends, which was developed by its Montpellier studio. More recently, Ubisoft Milan’s Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope received Rayman-themed DLC. The creative director behind the Mario + Rabbids games, Davide Soliani, has since left to form his own studio. 5. India-Pakistan Hostilities Complicate India’s Diplomatic Options India-Pakistan Hostilities Complicate India’s Diplomatic Options The dust is settling, slowly, from India and Pakistan’s military collision as a delicate U.S.-brokered ceasefire took hold May 10. The origins of the conflict are clear enough: India sought to severely punish Pakistan for alleged links to a barbarous Islamist terror attack in late April in Kashmir, a region that both countries claim and have previously fought wars over. But the details of the fighting thereafter remain hazy at best, obscured by the two governments’ reluctance to admit losses, rampant misinformation on social media, and hypernationalist “news” shows fabricating everything from military coups to cross-border invasions on live TV. Even without total clarity, what is known about the eruption of hostilities between the two nuclear powers was enough to unnerve world leaders: massive aerial dogfights, relentless shelling, and the deepest strikes into each other’s states in the last half-century. While confusion reigned on the battlefield, the fighting simultaneously brought into much sharper focus broader trends in the geostrategic environment, especially the dramatic changes reshaping India’s foreign policy options. India has historically held to a strategy of “nonalignment,” avoiding alliances with great powers to preserve its diplomatic independence. Yet this proud tradition—initially designed to protect against the pitfalls of taking sides in the Cold War—has grown increasingly difficult to sustain in a world increasingly divided again, now by U.S.-China rivalry. The United States faces a delicate balancing act: how to deepen cooperation with India as their strategic interests converge, while respecting India’s deeply rooted commitment to diplomatic autonomy over formal alliances. The evolution of nonalignment. For a country that had just achieved hard-fought independence from Britain, a receding global superpower, asserting uncompromising independence from—and skepticism toward—the intrigues of the new superpowers was as much an innate reflex of the new republic as a calculated policy decision. The approach allowed India to take firm stances on international affairs in seemingly contrary directions. In 1956, for example, India both condemned the Anglo-French-Israeli incursion into Egypt during the Suez Crisis and criticized Soviet intervention in Hungary’s anti-Soviet uprising. Building on Gandhi’s moral vision and international fame, India bundled idealistic commitments like support for decolonization, peaceful resolution to disputes, and “non-interference” in internal affairs with its nonalignment brand to garner moral authority in a world riven by conflict and international meddling. India’s approach helped it to punch above its weight globally as a leader among developing nations, instrumental in founding the broader Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), a forum which today includes 120 countries. India’s nonalignment brand was so successful, in fact, that some India watchers express exasperation that India can’t shake its association with it, despite shifts in its approach since the policy’s heyday in the ’50s and ’60s. Pressure from India’s wars with Pakistan in 1965 and 1971 forced the country to tilt toward the Soviet Union in the later Cold War, despite retaining nonalignment rhetoric. The Soviet Union’s collapse naturally also forced a redefinition of “nonalignment”—resisting taking a side is hard when one side has disappeared. India shifted to stressing “strategic autonomy” instead, suggesting that it could still avoid joining military alliances or picking permanent friends, while being more practical in how it dealt with powerful countries. And in the early- to mid-2000s, “multialignment” became the new buzzword, emphasizing India’s ability to juggle active relationships with (sometimes conflicting) groups and powers—an approach that probably wouldn’t fit with nonalignment’s original meaning. U.S. policymakers used to managing groups of friends or foes often become frustrated with what they perceive as stubborn Indian duplicity. To American sensibilities, it’s scandalous that India can simultaneously play a key role in the Quad—a grouping of the U.S., Australia, India, and Japan designed to counter ******** power in the Indo-Pacific—as well as in BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, two bodies that include China and Russia as founding members and aim to act as counterweights to Western-led institutions. At its worst, American policymakers complain, India’s nonalignment tradition is simply an excuse to do whatever it wants, whenever it wants, with whomever it wants—without regard to any other relationships. Still, there is a certain respect for such dogged insistence on one’s own interests and independence that India’s approach can command even among those who have felt crossed by it. Henry Kissinger once lambasted Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi for her perceived intransigence with Richard Nixon. Decades later, however, he praised her statesmanship and expressed admiration for India’s unyielding strategic mindset that once drove him up the wall. Whether one admires or resents India’s nonalignment tradition, America’s ability to effectively engage with it hinges on both nations’ capacity to adapt nimbly to the world’s changes. A clarifying moment. Nothing clarifies geopolitics quite like military confrontation, which cuts through diplomatic pretenses to show who really stands where, and why. India’s clash with Pakistan is no different. Most obviously, the conflict showcased how much new Cold War-like dynamics have seeped into the ever-persistent Indo-Pakistani rivalry. A barrage of coverage about the conflict as a litmus test of ******** military technologies’ prospects against Western equivalents unmistakably echoes Cold War technological rivalries, with one New York Times headline declaring that “India vs. Pakistan Is Also U.S. vs. China When It Comes to Arms Sales” as each South Asian country has rejigged its weapons suppliers in recent years. Much has been made of U.S. officials’ confirmation that a ********-made J-10 jet from Pakistan shot down at least one of India’s French-made Rafale fighter jets. No less notable is India’s touting of its successful use of kamikaze drones manufactured in India using technology from Israel, one of America’s closest allies. That level of collaboration is particularly remarkable given that India’s nonaligned posture historically strongly favored Palestine over Israel. Diplomatically, too, the onset of the crisis further solidified years of growing U.S.-India and China-Pakistan ties, respectively. Many officials in Delhi took the robust support expressed by both President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance in the wake of the Pahalgam terrorist attack as approval for a strong retaliation against Pakistan, a country whose strategic relevance to the United States has diminished still further since the United States’ withdrawal from neighboring Afghanistan in 2021. China has meanwhile spearheaded support for Pakistan in the face of India’s response, confirming that the country is an “ironclad friend and all-weather strategic cooperative partner,” not to mention a leading recipient of ******** investment and advanced weaponry. India finds itself on the other side of this conflict needing to recalibrate its fiercely independent diplomatic tradition. The world—and especially its region—is rapidly realigning around Sino-American rivalry. Meanwhile, India continues its ascent as a global power in its own right, evolving into the kind of major player its nonalignment principles initially cautioned against allying with. Recent conflict dynamics are a case in point: India’s conventional military and economic dominance over its fragile archenemy appears decisive, with India dwarfing Pakistan’s GDP by an order of magnitude. However, its neighbor to the north maintains an economy now five times the size of India’s, unambiguously supports its archnemesis in conflict, and still harbors territorial disputes with India of its own. These realities—and emerging allegations that Beijing provided direct intelligence and air defense support to Islamabad in advance of the clash—would seem to demand still closer collaboration with the United States, fast. Given India’s diplomatic tradition, these facts won’t translate into the typical alliance model that the United States is accustomed to and longs to see from the only country with the long-term potential to counterbalance China in the Indo-Pacific. It’s not just that India’s prior history of colonialism grates against such a commitment. Equally, India’s forward-looking ambition to become an independent pole of an emerging multipolar world makes it allergic to becoming one among the U.S.’s many allies, expecting instead a unique working relationship of equals, commensurate with its status as the world’s largest nation and one of its oldest civilizations. If India’s legacy of nonalignment inhibits its consistency in growing the U.S.-India relationship, America’s lack of recent experience partnering with a peer power complicates its ability to engage well with India. The best chance of balancing the Indo-Pacific in the 21st century may ride on how well, or poorly, each nation addresses these tendencies. The violence we witnessed in early May should drive home the need for India and the U.S. to collaborate more closely. But the aftermath of the conflict has demonstrated how a lack of attentiveness threatens to derail that imperative: The Quad missed its opportunity to express support to India on a comparable level to China’s support for Pakistan; India neglected to even mention the United States’ role in brokering a ceasefire in its initial public statement, underscoring the country’s insistence on strategic independence; and President Trump’s repeated descriptions of the negotiation process have been deeply offensive to India’s nonalignment tradition. Much as the recent violence has highlighted the need for greater U.S.-India cooperation, there remains much space for improvement. 9. ‘Our Simone died after drinking free shots on holiday’ ‘Our Simone died after drinking free shots on holiday’ Joshua Askew BBC News, South East Charlotte Wright BBC South East Political Editor Squire Patton Boggs Simone White died along with four others after drinking bootleg alcohol in south-east Asia The family of a British woman who died from methanol poisoning while travelling in south-east Asia are urging the government to do more to educate young people on the risks of drinking bootleg alcohol abroad. Twenty-eight-year-old Simone White, from Orpington, died in 2024 along with five others after consuming free shots they were offered at a hostel in Laos. The MP for Dartford raised the issue in a debate in Parliament on Tuesday, calling for compulsory education on the issue in schools. Responding in the Westminster Hall debate, Foreign Office minister Catherine West paid tribute to Simone’s family and thanked them for raising the profile of the issue. She said the government was acting in response to the “tragic losses”. ‘It’s got to stop’ Amanda Dennis, a family representative, said Simone had a “zest for life”. “She was very well educated… [and] well-travelled. She was a lovely young lady, who had a lot more to live for.” Ms Dennis added they initially thought the lawyer would pull through, but days later they were told by hospital staff there was “no hope” of survival. She said the family was “joining forces” with others who had lost loved ones in the same way. “You can’t have any more young people losing their lives unnecessarily,” she said. “It’s got to stop.” Ms Dennis hopes no other young people will die from drinking bootleg alcohol Speaking in Parliament, Dartford MP Jim Dickson praised the “courage” of Simone’s family and others who were “fighting for justice” and “trying to raise awareness so that other families don’t have to lose loved ones in the same tragic circumstances”. In an interview with BBC South East, he said he was calling on the government to “increase the awareness among young people of a likelihood of methanol poisoning”. He said he wanted the Foreign Office website to be “very, very clear” about the risk of bootleg alcohol in certain countries and that it “probably needs to do more”. “Above all we think it should be in the school curriculum,” said Ms Dickson. “Young people should be being taught from a very early age that methanol poisoning is a possibility… and how to take action to avoid it.” ‘More awareness needed’ Mr Dickson said there were a number of ways young people could distinguish between “drink that is ok and drink that might poison them”, including avoiding “knock-off brands that are posing as mainstream brands”. Kay Coleman, mother of Bethany who was poisoned along with Simone but survived, said they had started a petition for compulsory education on methanol poisoning in schools. “There needs to be more awareness,” she said, adding that the “message [needs to get] across fully about the dangers” of drinking bootleg alcohol. A Foreign Office spokesperson said: “We are supporting the family of a British woman who has died in Laos and we are in contact with the local authorities.” Information on methanol poisoning in Laos is available on the Foreign Office website, they added. 13. Lowe’s stock rise as it reports better than expected earnings after Home Depot posted mixed quarter Lowe’s stock rise as it reports better than expected earnings after Home Depot posted mixed quarter Lowe’s (LOW) delivered on subdued expectations after years of post-pandemic struggles. The home improvement chain reported earnings on Wednesday morning that matched estimates on revenue and beat on earnings. Revenue fell 2% year over year to $20.93 billion, while adjusted earnings per share dropped 4.6% to $2.92, compared to the $2.88 expected. Lowe’s CEO Marvin Ellison said in the release the company overcame “near-term uncertainty and housing market headwinds” through “strategic investments in technology…[and] inviting store environments.” Same-store sales fell 1.7%, better than the 2.04% decline expected. That’s a reversal after same-store sales growth turned positive in Q4 for the first time in roughly two years. The company attributed the decline to “unfavorable weather earlier in the quarter” that was offset by “mid-single-digit Pro and online comparable sales growth.” Lowe’s stock is up nearly 3% in premarket trading. Prior to Wednesday’s report, Lowe’s stock was down around 6% year-to-date versus a 1% gain for the S&P 500 (^GSPC). Rival Home Depot’s (HD) stock was down 3.1% year to date. It reported a mixed earnings report on Tuesday as it reiterated guidance and said it will not raise prices due to tariffs. Here’s what Lowe’s reported for its first quarter earnings compared to Wall Street consensus estimates, according to Bloomberg: Revenue: $20.93 billion versus $20.93 billion Adjusted earnings per share: $2.92 versus $2.88 Same-store sales growth: -1.7% versus -2.04% The company reiterated its guidance for 2025 fiscal year. Total sales are projected to be $83.5 billion to $84.5 billion, while same-store sales are expected to be flat to up 1% year over year. Tariff uncertainty remains a top concern. The US temporarily dropped tariffs on ******** imports from 145% to 30%, while so-called reciprocal tariffs have been suspended for a 10% universal duty. However, rates are still much higher than they were historically, and the changing tariff environment has tanked consumer sentiment. Lowe’s sources 20% of its sales from China and has a large DIY customer base, factors that will make it “more challenging to mitigate tariffs” compared to Home Depot, TD Cowen analyst Max Rakhlenko wrote in a note prior to earnings. He added that Home Depot is “better positioned to manage tariffs,” partially due to its larger pro business. Another factor weighing on the retailer is the sluggish housing market. Homebuilder confidence continued to deteriorate in May. Expected sales in the next six months and traffic from prospective buyers also fell to an 18-month low. Story Continues On Monday, the 10-year and 30-year Treasury yields (^TNX, ^TYX) rose after Moody’s downgraded the US government’s long-term credit rating from AAA to AA1. Higher Treasury yields will likely spell higher financing costs for home improvement projects and homebuying, creating another headwind for the sector. In the fourth quarter, Lowe’s executives said they anticipate homeowners will renovate their homes rather than move due to stubbornly high mortgage rates. “At some point, customers are going to get normalized in this high mortgage rate environment and they’re going to start to tap into that equity, making the decision that they’re going to stay in their existing home but modernize,” Lowe’s CEO Marvin Ellison said on the fourth quarter earnings call. 14. DICE Legend Has Very Cruel Words for Battlefield 6 Leaked Gameplay Footage DICE Legend Has Very Cruel Words for Battlefield 6 Leaked Gameplay Footage The Battlefield 6 leaks keep flowing like a broken dam, and now they’ve caught the attention of one of the franchise’s most influential architects. David Goldfarb, the creative force behind some of the series’ most beloved entries, has weighed in on the latest gameplay footage—and his assessment isn’t exactly a ringing endorsement. Goldfarb’s credentials make his opinion particularly weighty. As lead designer and writer on Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3, he helped craft what many consider the franchise’s golden age before departing DICE in 2012. When someone with that pedigree speaks, fans listen—especially when the words include “weird” and “generic.” The good, the bad, and the generic The leaked Battlefield 6 footage that caught Goldfarb’s eye shows intense infantry combat with impressive environmental destruction—a hallmark that many felt had been diminished in recent entries. His initial reaction seemed positive, tinged with nostalgia for one of his own creations: oh the BC2 vibes this is giving me, having flashbacks to the first time we playtested Arida Harbor [Hidden Content] — David Goldfarb (@locust9) May 20, 2025 That warm, fuzzy feeling didn’t last long, however. In a follow-up comment, Goldfarb didn’t pull any punches regarding other aspects of the gameplay. The movement mechanics and character design—two fundamental elements of any shooter—left him cold: movement looks a little weird to me tho and i cannot say i like the char design which seems very generic — David Goldfarb (@locust9) May 20, 2025 This criticism hits particularly hard, considering DICE’s May 2025 development update specifically highlighted movement as one of their validated focus areas. The studio claimed to have found “the right balance in movement speed” for features like crouch sprinting and combat rolling—mechanics that appear in the leaked footage. The “generic” character design critique might sting even more. After the poorly received Specialist system in Battlefield 2042, DICE has reportedly returned to the classic class-based approach. The blandness Goldfarb notes suggests they may have overcorrected, stripping away personality in their rush to abandon the previous game’s controversial characters. Some fans have pointed out that the leaked footage comes from Battlefield Labs testing, meaning it’s not representative of the final product. Still, with EA targeting a release before March 2026, these core elements should be fairly solidified by now. The clock is ticking for DICE to address these issues. Bad Company nostalgia overshadows Battlefield‘s future Franchise fatigue claims another victim. | Image Credit: DICE/EA While Battlefield 6 continues taking shape in the shadows, a vocal contingent of fans remains fixated on the past, specifically, the Bad Company subseries that Goldfarb helped create. The destruction-heavy gameplay in the leaks has only intensified this yearning. BC2 destruction blew my mind. Then got ramped up with 3/4 — Trix (@RumbleEanna) May 21, 2025 The destruction system in Bad Company 2 remains legendary among fans. Buildings could be reduced to rubble, forcing players to constantly adapt their strategies as the battlefield literally transformed around them. This dynamic environment manipulation became the series’ calling card—one that many feel has been watered down in recent entries. Some fans are, in fact, so desperate for a return to those glory days that they’d prefer DICE abandon the numbered series entirely: This should be BC3, not BF6. Half Life 3 will get released before we ever get BC3. — holden4ever (@holden4ever) May 20, 2025 This sentiment isn’t isolated. After the troubled launch (and subsequent ******-and-burn) of Battlefield 2042, franchise fatigue has set in for many longtime players. Even with promising destruction in the new leaks, some fans just can’t muster enthusiasm for another mainline entry: already feeling fatigue from battlefield series and while this is welcome the only vibe i got was ‘meh’ im still waiting for a bad company 2 remake with vietnam i think that might be more interesting — ItzzTacoTime (@ItzzTacoTime) May 21, 2025 Goldfarb’s response to this particular comment was brutally straightforward: yeah they def ain’t makin that — David Goldfarb (@locust9) May 21, 2025 His blunt assessment aligns with reality. Despite writing a script for Bad Company 3 (which he’s occasionally shared snippets of on social media), Goldfarb has repeatedly indicated that EA shows little interest in reviving the subseries. The focus remains firmly on the mainline games, for better or worse. The question remains: can Battlefield 6 recapture the magic that made the franchise great, or will it be another missed opportunity? Goldfarb’s mixed reaction suggests DICE still has work to do before winning back the hearts of veterans and newcomers alike. What do you think of the leaked footage? Does Goldfarb’s assessment seem fair, or are you more optimistic about Battlefield 6? Drop your thoughts in the comments below! 15. How the mask slipped during US fugitive’s court saga How the mask slipped during US fugitive’s court saga Steven Godden BBC Scotland News PA Media Nicholas Rossi first came to public attention in the *** after his arrest in December 2021 I first met Nicholas Rossi – or Arthur Knight, as he insisted on being called – in February 2022 in a corridor at Edinburgh Sheriff Court. He was there to fight extradition to the US, where he was accused of *****. Sitting in his electric wheelchair, dressed in a three-piece suit and sporting a wide brimmed hat, the raspy voice behind the oxygen mask was telling anyone who would listen that this was all a terrible misunderstanding. His hands, meanwhile, were hoovering up reporters’ business cards. Rossi’s departure that day set the tone for what became a familiar scene – a slapstick performance in front of the cameras during which he tipped his wheelchair onto the pavement while trying to manoeuvre into a waiting taxi. Later that evening an unknown number flashed up on my mobile phone and I heard that same raspy voice. “Hello Steven, it’s Arthur… do you have a minute?” And so began an exercise in separating fact from fiction that continues three years later, which I have explored in a new podcast as part of the Strange But True Crime series on BBC Sounds. The name Nicholas Rossi first came to wider attention in December 2021 when he was arrested on the Covid ward of a Glasgow hospital. Staff had recognised his mugshot and distinctive tattoos from an Interpol wanted notice. The problem for the American authorities was that the man they were seeking to extradite swore blind he was the victim of mistaken identity. He claimed he was Arthur Knight, an Irish-born orphan who had never been to America – and said he could prove it. A couple of weeks after our first phone-call, “Arthur” was sitting opposite me in a BBC studio, his wife Miranda by his side, telling his tale for the cameras. He said he grew up in care in Dublin and escaped to London as a teenager. There, he sold books with his friends at Camden market, like Del Boy from the comedy Only Fools and Horses. Years later he married Miranda in Bristol before they moved to Glasgow. He showed me their marriage certificate – accompanied by a special licence from the Anglican Church, because “I wouldn’t lie to the Archbishop of Canterbury”. What he couldn’t produce was a birth certificate. Or a passport. The story of Nicholas Rossi, the US fugitive who ‘faked his own death’ (Video by Morgan Spence, Graham Fraser and David MacNicol) He was vague about his schooldays and couldn’t say what happened to his old friends. At times the conversation veered as wildly as his accent – from claims he survived the London Tube bombing (he got the date wrong) to a story about once meeting Del Boy’s sidekick Rodney. He repeatedly denied being Nicholas Rossi, but when I asked about tattoos he said he was “too tired” to show me his arms. It was a surreal, unconvincing performance that was being watched across the Atlantic by plenty of people who recognised the main character. “I’d know those hands anywhere,” Mary Grebinski later told me. She’d been a college student in 2008 when Nicholas Rossi ********* assaulted her on the way to class. He was convicted and placed on the sex offenders register. In Dayton, Ohio – the city where that attack happened – I also spoke to Rossi’s ex-wife. Kathryn Heckendorn said she had bought him the red silk pyjamas “Arthur” had been filmed wearing outside court. Their unhappy marriage lasted eight months. The judge who granted their divorce in 2016 said Rossi was guilty of “gross neglect of duty and cruelty” on account of his abusive behaviour. Conversations like this helped fill in the blanks. PA Media Rossi’s ex-wife Kathryn Heckendorn recognised a pair of pyjamas he wore to one court appearance Nicholas Rossi was born Nicholas Alahverdian in 1987. Rossi was the name of his stepfather, who at the time was Rhode Island’s premiere Engelbert Humperdinck impersonator. As a teenager he spent time in care and, years later, enjoyed a degree of local fame as a child ******** campaigner. When reports of Alahverdian’s death emerged in 2020, politicians paid tribute from the floor of the Rhode Island State House. According to an online obituary his last words were: “Fear not and run towards the bliss of the sun.” But it didn’t take long for this deception to begin unravelling. A priest who had been asked to arrange a memorial mass was warned by a detective not to go ahead because “Nicholas isn’t dead”. Instead, the authorities suspected Rossi was somewhere in the ***, having fled after discovering that the FBI were investigating an alleged credit card fraud. PA Media The legal process dragged on in the Scottish courts It was his online footprint that ultimately led police to his hospital bedside in Glasgow – ironically as the fugitive was recovering from a genuine near-death experience in the shape of Covid. At one of his early extradition hearings the sheriff commented that advancing the case shouldn’t be “rocket science”. But the legal process dragged on and on – in large part due to Rossi’s antics. There were rambling courtroom monologues, questionable medical episodes and theatrical outbursts which were often directed at his own lawyers as a prelude to sacking them. Sitting in the public gallery, it was rarely dull. Rossi’s claim that a corrupt hospital employee called Patrick tattooed him while he was in a coma was one of the more memorable exchanges. In the end the sheriff’s conclusion was that the Arthur Knight charade was “implausible” and “fanciful”. And yet Rossi stuck to his story – even as his extradition was approved and High Court judges refused his appeal. He stuck to his story as US Marshalls bundled him onto a private jet and as prison guards booked him into the Utah County jail. He stuck to his story in a Utah courtroom, until suddenly he didn’t. US fugitive Nicholas Rossi admits using Arthur Knight alias In October last year I tuned in to a routine bail hearing online when, without warning, the posh English persona disappeared. Speaking in a clear American accent he told the judge he was born Nicholas Alahverdian before his name changed to Rossi. As he claimed to have hidden his identity to escape “death threats”, I found myself wondering why he’d chosen that specific moment for the mask to slip. The saga continues, but the novelty has worn off. The intrigue and farce has been stripped away while the serious allegations remain. In August, Nicholas Rossi is due to face the first of two separate ***** trials. He denies all the charges. 17. Nyul Nyul country gains protected status Nyul Nyul country gains protected status The Nyul Nyul people have gained national recognition for their efforts to protect country, with the declaration of a new Indigenous Protected Area (IPA) spanning 144,000ha on the Dampier Peninsula. The IPA will help safeguard freshwater springs, monsoon vine thickets, threatened species including the greater bilby and short-nosed sea snake, and stretches of sea country. It also cements Aboriginal-led conservation at the heart of land and sea management in the region. Kimberley Land Council (KLC) land and sea unit Manager Daniel Oades said the recognition was the result of years of dedicated work by the Nyul Nyul prescribed body corporate and ranger team. “IPA recognition does not happen every day, and this hard-won milestone ensures that Nyul Nyul can assert authority over their country and shape land management according to the vision of the Nyul Nyul people,” Mr Oades said. The Nyul Nyul rangers have been actively managing their country since 2008, carrying out prescribed burning, biodiversity monitoring, cultural education, and sea country care. Their work has already earned national recognition through programs like their award-winning two-way science partnership with the local school. “This IPA recognises 15 years of proactive land management, led by the Nyul Nyul rangers and guided by the PBC,” Mr Oades said. “Their efforts have already made a significant impact on the health of country and community. The IPA now provides national recognition and a stronger foundation for future work.” Nyul Nyul ranger co-oordinator Preston Cox said the formal recognition marked an emotional and long-awaited achievement for the community. “It’s a good feeling in my liyan,” Mr Cox said. “This is a great thing for Nyul Nyul country and people. We have been looking forward to this moment for a very long time. This is about more than just land — it’s about continuing stories, knowledge and connection,” he said. “We’ve passed this knowledge down from generation to generation and with this recognition, all the young people at the ceremony today will be able to do that.” Nyul Nyul PBC director Fiona Smith said the declaration honoured the work of ancestors and future generations alike. “We are carrying on the legacy of our old people,” Ms Smith said. “I’m doing this work for my mum who is no longer with us — I continued this work for her because I want to see Nyul Nyul country protected now and into the future. My liyan felt good today.” The new IPA links with the Bardi Jawi protected area to the north and is expected to strengthen further efforts by neighbouring traditional owner groups, including the Jabbirr Jabbirr and Nimanburr, who are also developing their own IPA plans. The Kimberley Land Council says it remains committed to supporting Aboriginal-led conservation in the region. 18. Fortnite finally makes its long-awaited return to iOS in the US Fortnite finally makes its long-awaited return to iOS in the US Fortnite is back on the iOS App Store, at least in the US It marks perhaps the final end to a years-long legal battle Now, Apple and Google stand as the losers in the legal saga Epic kicked off back in 2020 It seems as if every other month, we’ve had news that Fortnite is coming soon to iOS. But this time we can categorically say that’s the case, since this time it’s actually officially available, no strings attached! Well, in the US at least, but after years of legal back-and-forth, this marks a major turning point for Epic and Apple. Most of you probably already know, but Epic and Apple (as well as Google) have been embroiled in an ongoing legal battle for years now. After Epic laid down the gauntlet by introducing outside app purchases to Fortnite, effectively circumventing the App Store and Apple’s 30% cut on all transactions. Since then, the situation has been a bit hectic, with the occasional wins and losses on both sides. However, by now it seems evident Apple and Google have been the biggest losers, having to ditch many of their fees on in-app purchases, policies on outside links, and allowing third-party storefronts. An Apple a day… Right now, what this means for regular players is pretty much in the air. Of course, many developers have been incentivising in-app purchases made outside the app store with deals, and third-party app stores such as the Epic Games Store have offered other goodies, such as their famous free game programme. However, right now, the big talk is behind the scenes. For most of the history of mobile gaming, Apple and Google have controlled the app store scene. But as slow as it may have been, the Epic vs Apple legal battle has firmly put that to bed. So the only question now is whether this sparks a new golden age of app stores, or business as usual, albeit with some changes. Speaking of other great releases that aren’t available on your typical app store, why not check out our feature, Off the AppStor,e to get started looking through some great alternative releases? The developer said the difference between the PS4 and PS5 “isn’t so great” but at least makes development “more efficient.” In an interview with Edge Magazine about Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, which will be released on PS5 in June, Sakamoto compared the experience of developing for the two latest PlayStation generations. In some ways, it’s created an environment where the artists are now out of control.” Former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden has previously spoken about the need for console manufacturers to move past competing on performance alone, saying, “We’re at the stage of hardware development that I call: ‘Only dogs can hear the difference.'” Both Sony and Microsoft are reportedly already developing their next generations of consoles, and one report has suggested Microsoft may be looking to shake things up with the addition of a handheld device, following Nintendo’s lead in innovating on form factor over performance. A new report from the charity says twice as many ****** girls as white girls dream of becoming elite athletes in the *** – yet ****** girls are the least likely to take part in sport. Sanderson added: “We must build a sporting culture that lifts ****** girls up, not one that shuts them out.” The charity wants “urgent action” from sports leaders, coaches and policymakers, including better representation of ****** women at all levels of their organisations. Other recommendations include educating paid and voluntary staff about diversity, enforcing anti-racism and anti-misogyny policies, collecting and using data on gender and ethnicity participation, developing more community initiatives and having more flexibility in talent pathways to cater for additional needs of ****** girls. “Sports providers need to sit up and listen if they are to do right by ****** girls and there is little doubt of the benefit to sport from doing so,” said Stephanie Hilborne, chief executive officer of Women in Sport.
