Fiat Tris: Tiny three-wheel electric ute launched in Africa and Middle East
Fiat Tris: Tiny three-wheel electric ute launched in Africa and Middle East
Fiat has launched a new ute, but it’s not designed to take on Toyota HiLux or Ford Ranger, rather it’s a last-mile delivery vehicle currently aimed at Africa and the Middle East, but possibly coming to Europe in the not-too-distant future.
The new Fiat Tris is a three-wheel electric ute measuring just 3.17m from head to tail. For reference, kei cars which are popular in Japan — and increasingly seen on *********** streets as used imports — are 3.4m long.
Available in pickup truck, flatbed or chassis-cab configurations, the tiny Tris has 2.25 square metres of load space out the back. The cargo area can accommodate a standard euro pallet, and payload capacity is rated at 540kg.

For those who fear it’ll tip over like a Reliant Robin, Fiat says it has optimised the Tris for stability with a wide rear track and long wheelbase. It rides on 12-inch wheels, and is said to be “well-suited for both urban and rural environments”.
The Tris is powered by a 48V electric motor making 9kW and 45Nm, which is capable of motivating the three-wheeler to a top speed of 45km/h.
It is powered by a 6.9kWh lithium battery that’s good for 90km of range under the World Motorcycle Test Cycle (WMTC).
Recharging can only be done via a standard 220V plug, and takes 4 hours and 40 minutes for a full recharge, while going from empty to 80 per cent requires 3.5 hours.
Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert
There are no doors to hinder entry and exit, and the cabin features a 5.7-inch instrumentation display, three-point seat belts, a 12V outlet, USB-C port, storage nets, and a closed glovebox.
Judging from the photos it seems like the seating cushion is placed directly atop the car’s battery. Other niceties include LED ***********, a reversing buzzer, and a washer tank.
Although the Tris is only being launched in Africa and the Middle East for now, it is homologated for EU regulations. Fiat says European sales are a possibility as “this kind of smart, sustainable solution speaks a universal language”.
Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpertCamera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert
The Fiat Tris is latest in a line of not-quite-a-car vehicles from Stellantis. Starting in 2020 the automaker has launched the Citroen Ami, Opel Rocks, and Fiat Topolino (above), a series of tiny two-seat electric city vehicles.
Due to their small size, light weight, and limited power and top speed, they are classified as two-door quadricycles, allowing them to be driven without a licence in some EU countries.

Monster Train 2 Review – Engine Ingenuity
Monster Train 2 Review – Engine Ingenuity
“No two runs are the same” is an oft-spoken line in reference to roguelikes, and it has perhaps never been more true than with Monster Train 2. With five new Clans, new card types, and a side mode of dimensional challenges, every run is distinct, but combat never becomes less satisfying. Despite some cutscenes that leave much to be desired, Shiny Shoe has crafted one of my favorite roguelikes of the year so far, improving on the previous title in every way.
In Monster Train 2, you lead various armies of Hell in a war against the Titans, an old, powerful faction that threatens the existence of your world. To stand up against such an imposing threat, you have control of multiple Clans, unique societies, and species of magical creatures that each have their own playstyles. The angelic Banished Clan focuses on the Valor buff, granting additional armor and damage, while the draconic Pyreborn Clan hoards gold and inflicts pyregel, a debuff that causes enemies to take more damage. Each Clan also has two champions, powerful units you build your runs around, to choose from. When a run starts, you pick a primary Clan and a secondary Clan, and with five to unlock (plus a load of secret ones), the sheer number of combinations is staggering.
Combat takes place aboard the titular locomotive, which has four tiers of train cars – three for your units to battle, and a fourth to hold the Pyre, the train’s lifeblood. If it takes too much damage, it explodes and your run ends, so it’s in your best interest to eliminate enemies as soon as possible. The end result is part deckbuilder, part roguelike, and part tower defense, as you draw cards to place units on each floor and defend the train from waves of attackers.
Most cards cast spells, dealing damage, healing, inflicting status conditions, and more, but Monster Train 2 introduces two new types of cards: equipment and room cards. Equipment is played on a friendly unit to give them better stats and abilities, while rooms add a modifier to an entire car, like boosting spell potency or granting money when units die. The game also adds unlockable Pyres, which have active or passive abilities to make your runs even more interesting. Each feature brings something new and exciting to the table, entering the gameplay so seamlessly that I often forgot they were absent from the last game.
Each run uses one of two clans, each with two champions and associated starting cards, meaning that if you exclude the game’s secret clans (which increase the total exponentially), there are 80 ways to start a run. While I haven’t played each permutation, every combo I’ve started with so far has been surprisingly exciting, as each cleverly designed Clan synergizes with another in a unique way. It isn’t randomness for the sake of big numbers – each run I’ve played has felt as fun as the one before it, and it’s an impressive feat.
Monster Train 2 also includes a collection of 21 Dimensional Challenges, restricting you to a preset combination of Clans and adding fun mutators to alter the game. For example, “Weapons Make the Warrior” reduces all cards’ upgrade slots to 1, but makes equipment cards twice as powerful and cost less to play. “Twofer” doubles all money earned, status effects inflicted, and makes it so each time you add a card to your deck, you get a copy of it. In contrast to the standard, ultimately customizable base game, it’s a collection of carefully curated rulesets and modifiers. I appreciate that these challenges adjust your strategies and the game’s difficulty beyond simply making it harder. Many roguelikes include unlockable settings or difficulty modes limiting your abilities, but sometimes I want to be challenged in different ways, and Monster Train 2 understands that.
My main issue with the game lies in its story, which is, thankfully, infrequent and easily ignored. Upon completing runs, you’re greeted by cutscenes of conversations between the Clans’ various Champions as they try to figure out what to do next in their battle against the Titans. It feels half-baked, with reused battle models standing against plain backgrounds and turning left or right to indicate which character they’re speaking to. The dialogue is mostly exposition disguised as conversation, and most characters are reduced to their Clans’ most basic traits – dragons are greedy and like gold, while the Lazarus League obsesses over science and experiments. Monster Train 2’s gameplay is inspired and expertly crafted, but its cutscenes are cliché and forgettable.
Still, I didn’t come to Monster Train 2 for an engaging story. I came for tense, strategic combat, hours of upgrading and optimizing spells and units, and that uniquely roguelike power fantasy of starting with scraps and blazing your way to the top. The realm of indie roguelikes is competitive and crowded, but despite years of tough competition, Monster Train 2 has strongly reasserted its series as one of the leaders of the pack. In other words, many games are good; few are as good as Hell.

Walmart joins layoff wave amid economic and global strains
Walmart joins layoff wave amid economic and global strains
00:00 Speaker A
As geopolitical uncertainty continues to rise and financial pressures mount, some companies are turning to one of the most common cost cutting measures that they have, layoffs. As if raising prices wasn’t enough, Walmart recently announcing that it’s planning to cut about 1500 jobs as part of a restructuring push to help simplify operations. The plan is set to impact teams and its global tech operations, e-commerce fulfillment, and its ad business as well, Walmart Connect. Meantime earlier today TD Bank saying it would lay off 2% of its workforce in an effort to scale up its digital and AI investments under its new CEO. Shares are moving to the upside off of that news. Also last week, Microsoft announcing they would lay off 3% of employees across all levels affecting nearly 6,000 people. The hits impacting all sectors including the auto industry as well, Nissan intending to eliminate 15% of its jobs or about 10,000 people losing their jobs across the globe. All in all, the recent uncertainty in the markets and global trade wars sparking this run of layoffs impacting thousands around the world. Though we haven’t seen a rollover in labor market data just yet.

‘Far from over’: 50k residents cut off as deluge continues on Mid North Coast
‘Far from over’: 50k residents cut off as deluge continues on Mid North Coast
Nearly 50,000 people have been cut off in the deadly flooding that has claimed three lives in the NSW Mid North Coast and Hunter regions.
Severe weather is expected to continue to smash parts of eastern NSW, as the wet conditions move south towards Gosford, Newcastle and Bowra throughout Friday.
The Blue Mountains and the Illawarra ranges have received 150mm of rainfall in the span of 24 hours.
The Mid North Coast has copped 100mm of rain in the past 24 hours, with another 50mm to 100mm smashing Sydney and its surrounds.
The city is facing another deluge of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms on Friday morning.
A severe weather warning has been issued slightly further south for the Illawarra, South Coast and parts of the Southern Tablelands and Snowy Mountains districts.
Overnight, the NSW SES responded to more than 1,500 incidents across the state and rescued 177 people from the floodwaters, totalling to 678 rescues since the wild weather began.
NSW SES State Duty Commander Assistant Commissioner Colin Malone said while the rain was expected to begin easing later on Friday, the risk from flooding was far from over.
“For the last few days, our efforts have focused on undertaking lifesaving rescues, where more than 600 have been carried out since this flooding began,” he said.
More than 50,000 residents are at risk of being isolated and more than 9,000 homes are under threat as major flooding continues to cause carnage along the coast.

Major flooding warnings are in place for the Nambucca, Macleay, Hastings, Manning and Paterson Rivers and Wollombi Brook.
Rain began to ease in Macksville on Thursday evening, giving residents a sense of relief for Nambucca catchments along the Mid North Coast, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
Senior meteorologist Angus Hines told the ABC there would be “much less rainfall” in the flood-affected areas from Friday.
“In fact, no rainfall across most areas which are still experiencing significant major flooding,” he said.
However, the risk of life-threatening flooding remains.
Mr Malone said that despite rain beginning to taper off in the Mid North Coast, residents were not out of the woods yet.
“We may see renewed rises as water from earlier heavy falls makes its way downstream,” he said.

Conditions will finally start to ease on Friday morning across the northern parts of the Mid North Coast as the band of rain finally shifts south, though the Bureau said there was a long way to go.
“A big change finally after four days, where the weather pattern had not budged, and that’s why we saw so much rain in the same areas,” Mr Hines told the ABC.
“Yesterday, that band of rain slid southward and really stretched across a large part of NSW.”
The deluge is finally expected to begin easing on Saturday.

Yet another prestigious Xbox exclusive is coming to PS5
Yet another prestigious Xbox exclusive is coming to PS5
The award-winning Xbox exclusive Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II is branching out and coming to PlayStation 5 this summer. Developed by Ninja Theory, Hellblade II picks up after the first game, following the titular character into a richly detailed world of Viking myth and lore.
Dom Matthews, studio head at Ninja Theory, announced the news today via a YouTube video. “Today, on the one-year anniversary of the release of Senua’s Sage: Hellblade II, we’re excited to share some news with you on the game,” he says. “We’re so happy to tell you, our fans, that Hellblade II will be coming to PlayStation 5 this summer. This version of the game will include some new features that will also come to Xbox and PC at the same time as an update.”
The original Hellblade was available on PlayStation 4, but Xbox acquired Ninja Theory in 2018. The sequel was slated as an Xbox exclusive, but the studio says it is pleased to bring its PlayStation fans back to Senua’s ongoing story.
Ninja Theory didn’t specify what the enhanced features would include, but don’t worry. They’re coming to existing platforms as part of an update with the launch of the PlayStation 5 version of the game.
Both Hellblade games have positioned themselves amid a brutal world and used that setting to explore mental health. Rather than focusing on over-the-top gameplay, Hellblade II takes a more narrative approach and tells a tightly-focused story in roughly seven hours or so of playtime.
The title’s focus on narrative won it a nomination for Best Narrative and Games for Impact at The Game Awards, and it brought home the prize for Best Audio Design and Best Performance by its lead voice artist. Use of binaural audio means different sounds play in different ears, and the quiet whispers of voices that aren’t there, combined with Senua’s sometimes ragged breathing, make the series one of the best depictions of serious mental health issues ever seen in video games.

Supreme Court insulates Federal Reserve while backing Trump firing of agency leaders
The U.S. Supreme Court building in Washington, July 19, 2024.
Kevin Mohatt | Reuters
The Supreme Court on Thursday strongly suggested that Federal Reserve board members would have greater protection against being fired by a president in a ruling that for now allows President Donald Trump to fire two members of other federal agencies’ boards.
The Supreme Court in its ruling said, “We disagree” with arguments by Gwynne Wilcox and Cathy Harri that their legal challenges to their terminations “necessarily implicate the constitutionality of for-cause removal protections for members of the Federal Reserve’s Board of Governors or other members of the Federal Open Market Committee.”
“The Federal Reserve is a uniquely structured, quasi-private entity that follows in the distinct historical tradition of the First and Second Banks of the United States,” the majority ruling said.

Charli XCX wins songwriter of the year

Charli XCX hit the big time with her sixth studio album, Brat, last summer
A self-deprecating Charli XCX downplayed her talents as a songwriter, as she was named songwriter of the year at the Ivor Novello Awards.
Accepting the award in London, the star illustrated her “songwriting genius” by quoting the lyrics to her 2024 song Club Classics: “I wanna dance to me, me, me / When I go to the club, club, club.”
“I’m sure you all agree, I am hardly Bob Dylan,” she joked to an audience that included Bruce Springsteen and Robbie Williams, “but one thing I certainly do is commit to the bit”.
The ceremony also saw awards for rising stars Lola Young and Myles Smith, while U2 became the first Irish band to win the fellowship of the Ivor Novello songwriting academy.
U2 took a break from recording their next album to attend the awards
The award recognised almost 50 years of hits, including With Or Without You, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Even Better Than The Real Thing, I Will Follow, Vertigo and One.
Speaking on stage, the band’s frontman, Bono, paid tribute to the power of music. “Songs can be arrows through time if they come from the right place,” he said.
“They can fly higher and farther, last longer, hit harder. They can pierce the hardest armour of the human heart.
“I don’t know if they can change the world, but they changed us.”
Each of the band’s members gave their own acceptance speech, with drummer Larry Mullen, Jr, recalling the group’s first rejection letter, from the head of CBS Records, ***** Winwood.
“He heard the song and offered us a record deal, but only if the band fired the drummer,” he said.
“I humbly concede that on every musical break, I may have counted to three instead of four – but from where I’m standing right now having trouble counting makes some of us look like musical geniuses.”
Getty Images
Lola Young had the most nominations going into the ceremony, and went home with the coveted Rising Star prize
The Killers won the special international prize, with Bruce Springsteen handing over the trophy to frontman Brandon Flowers.
The singer joked that “the only downside” of the award was that “it feels one giant step away from fulfilling my original dream of becoming the most sought-after valet on the Las Vegas strip”.
Backstage, Flowers was somewhat overwhelmed by Springsteen’s presence.
“That was really cool,” he told BBC News. “He went out of his way to come here. I love him.
Lola Young won the rising star award, recognising the success of her breakthrough single, Messy.
“This is such a big moment for the kid in my bedroom that was 10 years old, writing songs on her guitar,” the 24-year-old musician told the BBC.
“To be here now is such an honor, and such a gives me such a warm feeling.”
Young also revealed she’d recently finished her next album, and “shot 12 music videos in one day” to accompany her new songs.
Myles Smith’s Stargazing was named the most-played song on *** radio last year.
“The first time I heard it on the radio was actually in New York,” he said. “I remember it so specifically. I was in an Uber and the song came on, and I told the driver, ‘This is me’ and he could not care less.
“It was the best way to be humbled, and it really kept me grounded from year one.”
Getty Images
Myles Smith took home the prize for most-performed work of 2024
Charli XCX was recognised for her ground-breaking Brat album, which she described as “chaos and emotional turmoil set to a club soundtrack”.
But it’s a carefully crafted and nuanced record, where hedonism gives way to vulnerability, as she describes the doubts she has over friendships, motherhood and commercial success.
Marketed with laser-focused zeal, the album became the soundtrack to summer 2024, with its in-your-face “Brat green” cover art quickly becoming a meme.
On stage, Charli explained that the music could only ever be a starting point.
“‘I’ve never particularly believed the idea that everything starts from a great song,” she said.
“In my head, a great song alone has never actually been enough to captivate an audience.
“Instead, a song with a distinct identity coupled with a point of view… and above all, conviction is what can catapult a songwriter from being technically good to globally renowned.”
Getty Images
Robbie Williams was named the Ivor Novellos’ “Icon” for 2025
Robbie Williams’ won the icon award, in recognition of his 34-year career – from boyband hits like Could It Be Magic and Back For Good with Take That, to his record-breaking solo work on songs including Angels, Rock DJ, Feel and Come Undone.
Coming undone might also an apt description of his reaction to the award.
“When momentous things like this happen, it’s just a hodge-podge of things coming at you from the universe,” he said backstage.
“It’s self-doubt and self-hatred mixed with ego and delusion and audacity.
“So it’s very difficult to put your finger on what it feels like in the moment, other than you’re supposed to say, ‘I’m very grateful’. And I am.”
2000s indie heroes Bloc Party won the outstanding song collection prize, while Berwyn’s fierce and personal debut Who Am I, was named best album.
Best contemporary song was won by Sans Soucis for Circumnavigating Georgia, while best song musically and lyrically was won by Orla Gartland for Mine, beating the likes of Lola Young, Raye and Fontaines DC.
Mine is a quiet but hopeful ballad about overcoming a traumatic experience that Orla said “really affected my relationship with intimacy”.
Accepting the prize, the Irish singer said she was proud to be an independent artist, because “I’m not sure what a boardroom of old guys would have known what to do with this song about bodily autonomy and reclaiming it”.
Taking a similar approach was pop artist Self Esteem, who was given the visionary award.
She used her speech to implore the music industry to do more to protect young women from misogyny and online abuse.
“People are foaming at the mouth to ridicule you,” she said. “People hate women, and sometimes [those comments] get in and stay there.”
But she also took the opportunity to thank her mum and dad, Janet and Andy, who’d finally seen her win an award, “after coming down to see me lose the Mercury [Prize] twice”.
“I’m so sorry about how much I swear and how many of my songs are about *********,” she added.

Lies of P: Overture makes a great Soulslike more approachable than ever
Lies of P: Overture makes a great Soulslike more approachable than ever
Back in 2023, Lies of P became a surprise hit thanks to its Pinocchio-inspired story and brutally fast combat. Though I enjoyed it at the time, that quick action was always my sticking point. It felt like bosses were so aggressive that slower weapons simply weren’t viable. Players really had to commit to every attack to keep up with enemies that lashed out in a flurry of violence. Developer Round8 has since put out patches to make a few bosses easier, such as reducing health and increasing chances of breaking their stances.
Now Round8 has a second chance to get things right. This summer, Lies of P will receive a prequel DLC dubbed Overture. The new chapter will take players back to the beginning of the mysterious Puppet Frenzy, and take them to some snowier locales along the way. It’s not just bringing a new time and setting to the table, though. Overture stands to make a tough base game even more approachable than ever based on what we played in a recent two hour demo that showed what the DLC has to offer.
Environmental variety
Right when I start my demo, I’m immediately struck by Overture‘s setting. While the base Lies of P game was filled with dark and rusty overtones, Overture is knee deep in snow. The bright white landscapes are a dramatic shift that makes Overture feel more inviting compared to the base game. There’s still clever environmental storytelling underneath those sheets of white. Boxes and structures are broken, scattered everywhere. Bright red blood is splattered all around. Something clearly horrific went down during the city of Krat’s final days.
I got to try out several new weapons during my demo, including a bow and arrow as well as a gunblade. The bow and arrow is precise, useful for picking off incredibly aggressive enemies at a range. In particular, there’s a frozen zombie enemy wearing a crown that would always charge at me as soon as I was spotted. I quickly learned that I needed to approach them very carefully so that I could get the jump on them first.
Ne
When that failed, the gunblade came in handy. The weapon has a satisfying heaviness that matches its explosive firepower. Its heavy combos carried me throughout my entire session. Essentially, the gunblade can unleash a medium range blast that propels Pinocchio backwards. In a follow-up combo, the second hit propels him forward for an additional sweeping strike on enemies. This particular attack is perfect for putting distance between me and my enemies before I can swoop in for the kill. Sure, I used that attack over and over again, but in a challenging Soulslike game, I wanted to take advantage of every tactic I had at my disposal.
As I perused through a zoo, a mansion, and a carnival-like area, I eventually came across the boss of my session: a gigantic alligator called the Tyrannical Predator. I wasn’t able to defeat it in time due to its hulking size and powerful bites that took out sizable chunks of my HP with each hit, but it was a healthy challenge to end a session I otherwise coasted through with one move.
Revisiting the past
For the second half of my session, I tested out a new feature coming to the Lies of P base game that will be extended to Overture: boss replay. In the main hub area, Hotel Krat, players will be able to have rematches with bosses they’ve previously fought against. Additionally, there are now multiple difficulty levels for the bosses. Each boss rematch has five levels, and upon beating them at Difficulty Level 5, players earn a commemorative item. As far as I can tell, there weren’t any differences in behavior between the lowest and highest difficulty levels. The boss’ damage output and HP are simply higher.
The Level 5 matches are quite difficult, as the bosses hit like trucks. Even a single strike from the game’s very first boss at the highest difficulty took out half of my health. On the flipside, the Level 1 matches are helpful for relearning boss fights and patterns that I’ve long since forgotten since the game’s release.
The main draw of the boss replay demo was that I was able to fight against three new bosses. Despite Overture’s overall snowy setting, it seems like there will be some different environments to explore. For example, Markonis, Puppeteer of Death resides in a lush greenhouse area. This is a dual boss fight where Markonis uses her mechanized puppet like a wrecking ball.
Ne
The second boss I faced was the Two-Face Overseer, which utilizes a giant hammer to fight. He reminds me of Batman villain Mr. Freeze, as the boss’s head is encased in a tank. The setting of this one looked like a hospital or medical institution. The third and last boss I faced off against was in some sort of excavation site. The creature is named the Anguished Guardian of the Ruins, and it’s enormous. It stands on four legs and has a bearded face. This was the only fight I tried with two phases, and was the most challenging of the new bosses due to its wide-sweeping attacks that required me to time my parries perfectly.
Based on what I played, Lies of P: Overture looks to be a substantial addition to the base game. I’ve only played an hour of the new area while spending another in its new boss replay feature, but I have the feeling that there’s so much left to explore. That’s great news for an already standout Soulslike game that’s only improved over time as it addressed its difficulty balancing. Overture feels like it will be a culmination of that process, letting more players than ever get in on the puppet slaying action.
Lies of P: Overture is scheduled to launch this summer.

Merriam-Webster hops on the Wordle train with new daily puzzle game
Merriam-Webster hops on the Wordle train with new daily puzzle game
Following in The New York Times’ footsteps, Merriam-Webster launched a new daily puzzle game called Revealed. The free browser game has players trying to guess a topic from a description filled with redacted words.
Considering that Merriam-Webster is behind the world’s most iconic dictionary, it makes perfect sense that it would eventually come up with a word game of its own. Though its coming in years after Wordle, a hit that inspired countless daily puzzle games, first took off, Revealed is a clever game in its own right that’s worth checking out.
Here’s how it works. Each day, players are shown a sheet of paper with a category, such as Arts & Culture, at the top of the page. Below that is an encyclopedia entry where several words are blacked out. Players need to type in what the page is describing by using context clues. That’s difficult at a quick glance, but that’s where hints come in handy. Each day, players can use up to seven reveals, each of which will uncover a redacted word. Players can also reveal a letter of the topic using a hint. The goal is to guess the topic using as few hints as possible.
So as to not rob you of a real solution, I’ll make up an example here. Let’s say that that the answer to a puzzle one day is Super Mario Bros. You’d see a page that starts with something like “Blank is a blank blank released in blank.” You won’t be able to reveal that first blank, but say you choose to reveal the second. You’ll get the word video, which might clue you in to the fact that the second is game. Rather than wasting a precious reveal confirming that, maybe you’ll choose to reveal the next one instead to get the year. You’ll do that throughout the page until you feel like you have enough information to make a guess.
At the end, you’ll get to see your final stats and compare how you did with other players. Lifetime stats like your completion rate and streak are recorded too.
If that all sounds enticing, you can try Revealed for free now on Merriam-Webster’s website. And if you want more games like it, check out our list of the best games like Wordle.

Trump administration seeks to end court settlement protecting migrant children in U.S. custody
Trump administration seeks to end court settlement protecting migrant children in U.S. custody
The Trump administration on Thursday moved to terminate a longstanding court settlement that has obligated the U.S. government for nearly three decades to provide basic rights and services to migrant children in its custody.
Since 1997, the settlement, known as the Flores Agreement, has required federal U.S. immigration officials to hold migrant children in facilities that are safe and sanitary; provide them access to lawyers; and seek their expeditious release from government custody.
The legal agreement has also allowed lawyers to inspect detention facilities holding migrant minors, to determine whether conditions are adequate for children and that the government is complying with the provisions of the court settlement.
While the settlement initially largely only applied to unaccompanied minors, in 2015, U.S. District Court Judge Dolly Gee extended the protections to migrant children detained with their parents, generally limiting the detention of such minors to 20 days.
In a filing on Thursday, the Justice Department told Gee, who is based in Los Angeles, that the Flores settlement should be “completely” terminated. It argued the agreement has hamstrung the executive branch from effectively setting immigration policy and incentivized ******** border crossings by migrant families and unaccompanied minors.
“After 40 years of litigation and 28 years of judicial control over a critical element of U.S. immigration policy by one district court located more than 100 miles from any international border, it is time for this case to end,” the Justice Department said in its filing.
The Justice Department also argued that, through laws and government regulations, the government has codified some of the provisions of the Flores agreement.
Thursday’s move was not entirely surprising. The first Trump administration also tried to terminate the Flores agreement, making similar legal and political arguments against the settlement. But its efforts were blocked by Gee, who was appointed by former President Barack Obama in 2009, and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
The Justice Department on Thursday also asked Gee to lift a ruling that blocked the Department of Homeland Security from enforcing a 2019 regulation that would have allowed the government to detain migrant families indefinitely, bypassing her 20-day limit.
The Trump administration’s bid will be challenged by the attorneys representing migrant children covered by the Flores agreement, which they say is critical to ensuring those minors are treated humanely while in U.S. care.
“Eliminating the Settlement’s core protections would hand the government unchecked power to imprison children indefinitely in secret facilities — places with no standards, no transparency, and no accountability,” said Mishan Wroe, an attorney at the California-based National Center for Youth Law.
“The consequences are not hypothetical: children will suffer,” Wroe said.

Todd Howard’s One Regret for Skyrim Isn’t Coming Back to Haunt Him in The Elder Scrolls 6: Hammerfell
Todd Howard’s One Regret for Skyrim Isn’t Coming Back to Haunt Him in The Elder Scrolls 6: Hammerfell
It’s been more than a decade since the release of Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, and it’s still hailed as one of the best entries in the franchise. Bethesda really went overboard with one, giving players the most expansive and open-world setting for exploration. Its quests, story arcs, and mechanics are simply lovely.
Even though Skyrim was a success story, game director Todd Howard still believes it had untapped potential. He’s often expressed his regrets about the RPG, particularly about not supporting the game for a longer duration. Fortunately, Howard has assured fans that Elder Scrolls 6 will not repeat this mistake.
Skyrim‘s greatest mistake won’t make a return in Elder Scrolls 6
Back in 2024, MrMattyPlays had an opportunity to chat with Howard about his passion for gaming. The Bethesda director answered a number of questions related to the studio’s future projects, potential remakes, and various other things.
While chatting, Howard opened up about Bethesda’s plans to support Fallout 76. Even though the title was absolutely a hot mess at its launch, Bethesda has elevated the experience. Howard’s support for the game was driven mainly by his regrets about Skyrim and Fallout 4.
We would look back at Skyrim, which we’re still updating to a small extent and there’s all the creations and mods there, still a hugely played game. Same with Fallout 4, that we wish we had supported them longer.
Even though Howard believes Bethesda didn’t support Skyrim, the game had a bunch of post-launch DLCs. We saw expansions such as Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborne. There were even multiple anniversary editions.

Sure, Bethesda could’ve done more at the time, but no one in their wildest dreams could’ve imagined how relevant Skyrim would stay even a decade after its release.
Howard confirmed that the highly anticipated Elder Scrolls 6 will be designed with a long-term plan in mind. He doesn’t want a game packed with content but an experience that players can return to even after years without thinking twice.
The wait for Elder Scrolls 6 continues
Elder Scrolls 6 is still years away from hitting the shelves. (Image via Bethesda Game Studios)
Bethesda teased Elder Scrolls 6 all the way back in 2018 with a 36-second trailer. Since then, we haven’t heard much about the game. Although there have been confirmations of it being in the production stages, there are no screenshots, gameplay footage, or crucial information about its setting or characters.
However, leaks from YouTuber Extas1s have given us some idea of what the RPG could feature. It’s reported that the game will be packed with tons of large cities, dragons, flexible leveling mechanics, and activity-based progression.
We could also see the introduction of shipbuilding mechanics and naval battles. It is also rumored that the game will be set in Hammerfell, which might surprise a few fans.
What’s really interesting is that, according to Extas1s, Bethesda might finally offer a glimpse into the game in July 2025. However, that seems unreal, as we know for a fact that the game entered active development after October 2023. It takes a lot of time and resources to develop modern games. The RPG will likely receive its first look in 2026, with a release somewhere in 2027 or 2028.
With that said, how else do you think Bethesda can learn from its past releases? Let us know in the comments below.

Supreme Court allows Trump to fire labor board members while case proceeds
Supreme Court allows Trump to fire labor board members while case proceeds
Washington — The Supreme Court on Thursday allowed President Trump to remove two members of federal independent labor boards while legal proceedings over their firings move forward.
The high court granted a request for emergency relief from the Trump administration to pause a pair of lower court rulings that voided Mr. Trump’s removals of Gwynne Wilcox from the National Labor Relations Board and Cathy Harris from the Merit Systems Protection Board.
Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson dissented from the court’s decision.
Chief Justice John Roberts had already temporarily halted the decisions to allow the Supreme Court more time to consider Mr. Trump’s emergency appeal. The order from the full court means Wilcox and Harris will remain out of their jobs while the challenge to their firings continues.
Wilcox and Harris’ employment statuses have ping-ponged since they were informed by the Trump administration earlier this year that they were removed from their respective roles. Wilcox had been appointed to the NLRB by former President Joe Biden and confirmed to a second five-year term in 2023. Harris was tapped by Biden to serve on the MSPB in 2022 for a seven-year term.
Each official sued the Trump administration over their firings, arguing they violated the for-cause removal laws that limited the president’s ability to oust them. Two separate federal judges in Washington, D.C., agreed and voided the firings. The judges each said Wilcox and Harris could remain in their roles at their respective agencies while their litigation plays out.
But a three-judge panel on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit paused those decisions, allowing the president to fire Harris and Wilcox again. The two then asked the full D.C. Circuit to reconsider their cases, and it ruled 7-4 to put the district court decisions back in place, meaning Harris and Wilcox could return to their jobs while their challenges moved forward.
The Trump administration asked the Supreme Court to step in and again allow Mr. Trump to oust Wilcox and Harris. Solicitor General D. John Sauer argued in the request for emergency relief that the Constitution gives the president broad power to remove members of multimember boards that exercise “substantial executive power,” such as the NLRB and MSPB.
“The president should not be forced to delegate his executive power to agency heads who are demonstrably at odds with the administration’s policy objectives for a single day — much less for the months that it would likely take for the courts to resolve this litigation,” Sauer wrote.
He argued that a court violates Article II of the Constitution by ordering an executive officer who was removed by the president to be reinstated to their position.
Sauer also argued that the NLRB and MSPB are not covered by an exception to the president’s power to remove executive officers established by the Supreme Court in 1935. In that case, Humphrey’s Executor v. United States, the high court found that Congress could impose for-cause removal protections to multi-member commissions of experts that are balanced along partisan lines and do not exercise any executive power.
The Trump administration did not ask the Supreme Court to overturn that decision, but did suggest that it could consider whether to invalidate the for-cause removal restrictions governing members of the NLRB and MSPB as a violation of the separation of powers.
But lawyers for Harris and Wilcox each warned that the administration is asking the Supreme Court to invalidate the structure of numerous agencies, putting at risk the independence of entities like the Federal Reserve Board, the National Transportation Safety Board and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Mr. Trump had indicated that he would like to fire Fed Chairman Jerome Powell, who he appointed during his first term, writing on social media in April that his “termination cannot come fast enough.” But the president then walked back the suggestion, saying he has “no intention” of getting rid of the Fed chief.
Neal Katyal, who served as acting solicitor general during the Obama administration and is representing Harris, wrote in a filing with the Supreme Court that the president is simply being asked to follow binding precedent, just as his predecessors have done for 90 years.
“History disproves the government’s assertion that the president will be irreparably harmed if he cannot remove Harris,” he wrote. “No other president in our lifetimes has ever attempted to violate for-cause removal statutes in this manner. The current chief executive is not being held to a different standard.”
Katyal also said the MPSB is covered by the exception set by the Supreme Court in its 1935 decision.
“The board is the easy case,” he said. “If the board’s structure is not constitutional under Humphrey’s Executor, nothing is.”
In a separate filing, a lawyer for Wilcox, Deepak Gupta, said the statute that lays out the parameters for firing NLRB members has been on the books for nearly 100 years, and no presidential administration until now has tried to remove a member of the board.
“Nevertheless, the government now claims that its need to remove Gwynne Wilcox is urgent — so urgent that it asks this court to override the en banc D.C. Circuit’s denial of a stay, jettison a century of settled interbranch practice, and signal the overruling of bedrock precedents of this court that have engendered strong reliance interests. The better course is restraint,” he wrote.
Gupta disputed the Trump administration’s claim that it needs emergency relief,, which would require the Supreme Court to “upend decades of tradition to allow the president to remove an NLRB member for the first time now — before this court has even had the opportunity to reconsider its longstanding precedent.”
Beyond the seat on the NLRB that had been filled by Wilcox and Harris’ position on the MSPB, there are still vacancies at both agencies that Mr. Trump can fill. But lawyers for both have argued the president’s firings have hobbled the boards and stymied their ability to adjudicate labor and employment disputes.
“By depriving the board of the quorum it needs to carry out its appellate decision making, the president’s ******** removal causes immediate harm to the workers, employers, and broader public who depend on it,” Gupta wrote.
Since returning to the White House for his second term, Mr. Trump has overseen a sweeping reshaping of the executive branch. He has fired top officials leading a swath of independent agencies and institutions, and gotten rid of independent agency watchdogs. His administration is moving to dismantle other federal entities and programs, sparking legal challenges.

Kneecap holds gig after member charged with terror offence
Kneecap holds gig after member charged with terror offence
Irish language hip-hop group Kneecap has performed in central London a day after one of their members was charged with a terror offence.
Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, who performs under the name Mo Chara, was pictured outside the 100 Club in Oxford Street on Thursday evening, after the band announced their surprise gig.
Mr Ó hAnnaidh was charged by the Metropolitan Police after an incident on 21 November 2024 at the O2 Forum in Kentish Town, where he allegedly displayed a flag in support of proscribed organisation Hezbollah.
Kneecap said they have never supported ****** or Hezbollah and would not incite violence against any individual. They said the video in question had been taken out of context.
Metropolitan Police officers were pictured outside the Oxford Street event, which the band said on X had sold out in 90 seconds.
The group from Belfast, who rap in the Irish language, said they would perform at the 100 Club on Oxford Street ahead of their headline slot at Wide Awake Festival in Brockwell Park, south London, on Friday night.
In a post to social media, they said: “London. We’re back. See you at The 100 Club tonight – tickets on ***** in one hour at 4pm.”
The venue confirmed the gig in a social media post and said doors to the event opened at 19:30 BST.
In a statement, the Met Police said a “policing plan” was in place for the gig to “ensure it passes off safely”.
“This is primarily in terms of managing visitors to the venue for what we understand is a spontaneous and sold-out event,” they said.
“There have been no issues or arrests.”
Mr Ó hAnnaidh had been charged by postal requisition and was due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on June 18, the force previously said.
In a statement posted on social media, Kneecap said: “We deny this ‘offence’ and will vehemently defend ourselves.”

Some flour reaches Gaza Strip as blockade eases
Some flour reaches Gaza Strip as blockade eases
Flour and other aid has started reaching some of the Gaza Strip’s most vulnerable areas after Israel let some trucks through, but nowhere near enough to make up for shortages caused by an 11-week blockade, ************ officials say.
Many other trucks were still at the border and people were still waiting to receive food amid fears that desperate crowds would try to loot the vehicles when they arrived, the ************ Red Crescent warned.
Israel said it allowed 100 trucks carrying baby food and medical equipment into the enclave on Wednesday, two days after announcing its first relaxation of the restrictions under mounting international pressure.
“Flour arrived from the (United Nations) World Food Programme, and we immediately started working,” baker Ahmed Al-Banna said as flatbreads passed by on a conveyor belt behind him at his base in Deir al-Balah on Thursday.
Bakeries across the south of the enclave started ovens that had been shut for two months, he added.
“God willing, bakeries in northern Gaza will soon resume work.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said late on Thursday that the construction of a “distribution zone” would be completed in the coming days with US companies distributing food in areas controlled by the Israeli military.
“Ultimately, we intend to have large safe zones in the south of Gaza. The ************ population will move there for their own safety while we conduct combat in other zones, and receive humanitarian aid there without ****** interference,” he said in a video statement released by his office.
As for the hostages, we’ll do every effort to secure them. I’m ready for a temporary ceasefire to get more out but we demand, and you should demand, that all of our hostages be released and released immediately. And so should every civilized country demand this.»— Prime Minister of Israel (@IsraeliPM) May 22, 2025
Israel imposed the blockade on all supplies in March, saying ****** was seizing deliveries for its fighters – a charge the group denies.
The UN has said a quarter of the Gaza Strip’s 2.3 million people are at risk of famine.
The ************ health minister said 29 children and elderly people had died from starvation-related reasons in the enclave in recent days and many thousands more were at risk.
Israel has repeatedly defended its controls on aid in the Gaza Strip, saying reports from aid groups of famine-like conditions were exaggerated and denying accusations of causing starvation.
Bread distribution would start later on Thursday, Amjad al-Shawa, director of the ************ Non-Governmental Organizations Network in Gaza, told Reuters.
He said just 90 trucks had got through.
“During the ceasefire, 600 trucks used to enter every day, which means that the current quantity is a drop in the ocean, nothing,” he said.
Bakeries backed by the WFP would produce the bread and the agency’s staff would hand it out – a more controlled system than previously when bakers sold it directly to the public at a low cost, he added.
************ Red Crescent President Younis al-Khatib said many trucks were still at the border at Karem Shalom and there was a risk of violence and looting when they arrived.
“No civilian has received anything yet,” he said.
“It’s very hard to hide the rush or the looting that will happen.”
On Wednesday night, boys and young men gathered after one vehicle arrived in the southern Gazan city of Khan Younis but kept back as men, some holding guns, watched over the unloading of sacks.
The International Committee of the Red Cross said it had got one truck of medical supplies through to replenish its field hospital in Rafah but more was needed.
“A trickle of trucks is woefully inadequate. Only the rapid, unimpeded and sustained flow of aid can begin to address the full scope of needs on the ground,” the organisation said in a statement.
Israel has stepped up its military operation in the Gaza Strip since early May, saying it is seeking to eliminate ******’ military and governing capabilities and bring back remaining hostages seized in October 2023.
Israel launched its campaign in the Gaza Strip in response to the ****** attack on October 7, 2023 which killed 1200 people by Israeli tallies and resulted in 251 hostages being abducted.
The campaign has since killed more than 53,600 Palestinians, according to Gaza health authorities, and devastated the coastal strip, where aid groups say signs of severe malnutrition are widespread.

OpenAI CFO says AI hardware boost ChatGPT in ‘new era of computing’
OpenAI CFO says AI hardware boost ChatGPT in ‘new era of computing’
OpenAI is betting a new “era” of computing will justify the company’s decision to spend billions of dollars on bespoke hardware to go with it, Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar said.
The artificial intelligence startup, best known for the ChatGPT chatbot, announced plans on Wednesday to buy iPhone designer Jony Ive’s devices startup io for about $6.4 billion. Ive’s company was founded roughly a year ago and doesn’t have a product on the market.
Friar told CNBC on Thursday that any startup as young as io was “hard to value.” But she sees an eventual return on that investment.
“You’re really betting on great people and beyond,” Friar said. “It’s not just about imagining what a new platform could look like — you’ve got to be able to craft it. You’ve got to be able to build it. You’ve got to be able to understand supply chains.”
Friar, who took the CFO job at OpenAI last summer and was formerly CEO of Nextdoor, said new devices will eventually get OpenAI’s technology in the hands of more users, and drive subscription growth and attach rates. ChatGPT last reported 500 million weekly active users, but monthly actives are higher, Friar said.
“When you start thinking about it beyond just a phone, it starts to grab the imagination,” she said. “If we can get people around the world excited to use AI, we have many ways to begin to think of a business model around that. So it could be an ongoing, ******* subscription for ChatGPT.”
Friar’s comments echo others in the tech industry who have said AI hardware could change the face of computing, and threaten the iPhone. Eddy Cue, Apple’s chief of services, said earlier this month that he believes AI devices could replace the iPhone within ten years.
While OpenAI works with Apple on an iPhone and Siri integration, Friar said the company still saw a need to have its own proprietary devices.
“We want to work with many partners. When we single-thread ourselves, we don’t think that drives max innovation,” Friar said. “We continue to work closely with Apple on their device, and we’d love to see more being done with AI — but we also want to keep sparking innovation broadly in the ecosystem.”
Friar hinted at new devices without touchscreens. She declined to give details around what exactly they might look like, pointing to the former Apple team’s secretive culture and “mystique” around products.
“As you birth this new era of AI, there’s going to be new platforms and new substrate,” she said. “We think of tech today as a little bit more around touch. We as humans, we see things, we hear things, we talk. And our models are great at that.”
